Right in Tempe I'd highly recommend the Candlewood Suites that's located at 1335 West Baseline Road (just a 1/4 mile east of S. Priest Drive). All rooms are suites that do include a micro, stove, kitchen items, fridge, and 37" flat screen HD TV. Easy walk (8 min) to the Tempe AZ Mills Outlet Mall. Also has small outdoor pool and a hot tub..

If you stayed at the Buttes you were really in Tempe. I recommend Mission Palms. It's near "A" Mountain, has a rooftop pool and a stone's throw from Mill Ave, which has lots of palms.

Go to the Tripadvisor webiste and it will not only give you the ratings of all the hotels/motels in PHX it will give you links to any you choose to make inquiries with. And after you have stayed you can join and leave feedback.

Hotel Indigo in old town Scottsdale was really new and nice when I stayed there in late 2010. Affordable and great area too, check it out!
