We would like a family room or a suite.... but as affordable as possible without getting a dump! :)
We don't HAVE to be in a location that is CLOSE to everything - but it would be nice, of course!
I am going to NY next week and found a great place on Craig's List under vacation rentals. You can find apartments people are renting out in their absence, or people also rent out additional rooms in their apartments - I'm renting out the additional bedroom in someone's 2 bedroom apt for $60/night (and it's a nice apt in Spanish Harlem). Although you do want to be careful to make sure you aren't tricked into renting a place that doesn't exist, you can find amazing deals, save a lot of money, and, in some cases, get access to your own personal concierge depending on the person you rent from (some leave maps, ideas, etc for you)
Search here for cheap hotels http://www.jetsetgotravels.com
It provides search option like near a landmark etc
Also it provide searches from more than one source.
But beware ... cheap hotels can be trouble some times so check reviews of the hotel your are going to book.
Check the exact location of hotel from google maps.
I recommend staying at Candlewood Suites in Jersey City and taking the PATH train in each day. You can walk to the PATH station from the hotel.
It's going to be hard to find "cheap" in NYC - depending on what your definition of "cheap" is....
Since you have six people, you might want to look into renting an apt/condo - this would save money on meals, too, as you could at least have breakfast in your room.
Try HomeAway.com for a listing of apts/condos.
