This is the second time I've stayed at one of the hotels on Valley West in Arcata.  The place where I stayed last time is now closed, along with another hotel in that strip, meaning 2 out of the 4 hotels is closed, standing vacant.  The location is about a 5 minute drive from the school and the downtown area.  I sometimes like being a little bit outside of the action when I travel with my dog (which adds $20 to the bill, by the way).  This is a good place to stay with pets.  There's a large grassy area to walk the dog and picnic tables and charcoal grills if you want to cook your own food instead of eating at Oriental Buffet or Round Table across the street.  The room itself was large with all the amenities (microwave, refrigerator, iron and ironing board).  The carpet was dingy and smelled a little like pee in one corner.  I reported that so they didn't blame my dog, but I only noticed it because I was crouched on the ground rummaging through my cooler.  I didn't request to change rooms.  Comfortable bed, lots of pillows.  The staff was friendly and the free breakfast was fine.  Two negatives: terrible water pressure and very slow wi-fi.  What's with Best Western and slow wi-fi?  I've encountered this problem with BW in 3 different states.  If I were to stay in Arcata again, I would probably return if I wanted to be a little be in this location--the only other remaining option is Motel 6--but I have to say it's kind of a grim area now that there are 2 vacant hotels standing there.  Next time I'll probably stay right in town.  If you're looking for a no-hassle option right off the highway, though, this is a good bet.

Last time I stayed in arcata was for a funeral for my buddies mom. But it was such a perfect get away. The manager was super kind and gave us a bereavment rate sine we had so many of the family staying there. The staff was super helpful and fun and that was including their friendly housekeepers!  The checkin was easy and the checkout was even easier. The room was spacious and clean and we could go across street for groceries or mexican or pizza. Plus they had refridgerators and microwaves in the room. The breakfast was awesome..with make ur own waffles and even protien like hard boiled eggs and string cheese! The best tho was the kids getting to spend all day after the icky part of our day..playin in the indoor/outdoor pool while we watched from the hot tub. Even my computer addicted son was able to hook up to his laptop w the free internet while one of the other kids looked at their email on the guest computer. It may be one of the older hotels on the block, but we loved this place and will be back!

Very clean, quiet and comfortable. Great shower heads which provide a soft, luxurious feeling shower with excellent water pressure. Add fluffy towels, comfortable beds and a great breakfast, and you're in. All for 72 bucks. Try the Oriental Buffet across the street, very tasty, as is the drive through coffee joint in the restaurant parking lot.

A great affordable comfortable hotel.  The flat screen tv's are nice but the pillows are what sells the place.  Super soft and comfy!  It was a quiet place with a great breakfast!  There was waffles, pastries, bagels, yogurt, fruit, coffee, juice & tea.  The staff was friendly too!  I will most definitely stay there again when I am visiting my son in college.  I didn't get to use the pool/hot tub but will make a point next time.

Great hotel to stay at.  Great staff who is willing to help you at every turn.  They are very knowledgable of the area on where to eat and visit. The breakfast is great and they always have coffee and teas available 24 hours.  The pool is great to have if you have kids but beware it is not heated.  The only bad thing about the hotel.  The rooms are big and clean.  They are fantastic.  My family and I really loved this hotel and we will be back in our next trip up North.  Thanks for the memory.

Suprisingly delightful experience. I have had the pleasure of staying here twice. The first time I came with my lady friend to visit HSU. I was a bit skeptical at first but was soon swayed. With cheap wine from Rays across the street and acess to a jacuzzi, we spent the night in style. The front desk was ever so helpful in giving us a free wine opener. I never would have guessed they had one. The free breakfast is pretty good. Make your own waffles, oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, toast....string cheese (haha) they have a decent selection. It really looks like they take the time to make it nice. Bring your coffee mug and fill er up with their coffee to start your adventure in the morning.

My second stay was a few months later when I came to see a show at Humboldt Brews. I stayed the first night at motel 6 because it was the cheapest option. Never the less the second night I convinced my male companion to splurge for the best western, at least here I wouldnt be afraid to use the shower or step on the carpet barefoot. And what a relief it was from the other lesser establishment. For a mere 20 dollars more we had a cleaner more enjoyable experience and we even got pillow chocolates which were suprisingly delicious.

Best Western is pretty much my go-to when looking for a cheap, clean option.  This location is no exception.  Comfortable, and would stay again.

Best Best Western I've ever been to. I love the easy-to-disinfect remote to the flat-screen TV. The soap dispenser was cool - never seen one of those in a hotel shower, though ours was leaking shampoo.

We will stay here again next time we visit the area.

Clean, nice, no smells, great service, and a good continental breakfast.  They welcome pets, and have rooms dedicated as pet free.  The indoor hot tub and indoor/outdoor pool are great ammenties. We especially enjoyed the stores and restraunts within walking distance.  The only thing we found frustrating were the card lock system.  The card locks took a bit to figure out, but the staff was patient with our struggles.

A very good hotel. We had a decent room. It was located over the laundry room. Our room was comfortable, but it did get warm at times. I enjoyed the the indoor juccuzi. I would stay here again.

This was a nice motel. We stayed here one night following our visit to the Redwood National Forest. The hotel clerk gave us a recommendation for a restaurant (Plaza Grill), which we really enjoyed. They had a complimentary breakfast buffet, including make-you-own waffles, fresh fruit (bananas, apples), cereal, yogurt, and more. The room was spacious and clean.

My husband left his shoes in the room when we left, and the hotel offered to ship them to our next hotel. Instead, we turned around and picked them up, but the gesture was very nice. The town of Arcata was nice as well. Lots to do if we were spending more time there.

Stayed here for our last night while in Arcata recently.  This was a nice and basic hotel.  Wish the hot tub was open later--man, I didn't get to try a hot tub at any hotel during this trip!  It seems a bit newer than the Quality Inn across the freeway.  The free wifi was a bit hit or miss.  Did not get to try their free breakfast (according to ALE S., it sounds pretty dope).

This place is pet-friendly and have the biggest grassy area to let your four-legged homies romp around on.

We were able to get a room at a government rate, which was nice.

Nice Best Western that meets the needs of travelers seeking standard room accommodations in the Arcata area.  Glad to see Best Western is now classifying their hotels in to 3 tiers so customers now get an idea of what they should expect. If your looking for for a bit more expectation look for a Best Western Plus or Best Western Premier.

Our room was very clean, well laid out, and big enough for our party of 4.  The breakfast was very generous, and the front desk staff was very friendly and courteous. Look forward to staying here again.

    Best Western impresses again.

This hotel isn't a Hyatt or a Marriott but it should be evaluated for what it is: the best MOTEL chain there is.  In fact, the only way I know it's a motel and not a hotel is that you enter the rooms from the outside.  Once you're in, it feels like more of a 4 star hotel room.

Comfortable, spotlessly clean beds and bathroom, flat panel tv, mini fridge and microwave, and a welcome feel.  Best Western is affordable and a great go-to when you aren't in a large, metropolitan area where you can take advantage of the larger, luxurious hotel chains.

I would definitely stay here again and feel that Best Western really has a good grasp of what travelers are looking for in a moderately priced, quality chain motel.

We stayed for 4 nights here in August 2011. Upon checkin we noticed the group of homeless type looking people on the property near the picnic tables. I had read about this "group" in prior reviews and well, it is Arcata so I wasn't bothered too much by them. Had my room been on that side of the property, I may have been more concerned.

Our room was cleaned everyday and was cleaned immaculately. I have stayed at hundreds of hotels and this one absolutely takes the cake for cleanliness! I was so impressed and thankful for the feeling of being able to just know that things were clean, cared for, and taken care of.

The desk staff was always friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great- we took trays full of goodies up to our room and ate in our room in our pajamas each morning. Parking was good- we were able to park in front of our room each night. There are cards in the room that they place on a board in the laundry room for guests to give suggestions of local places to explore. I enjoyed reading those and also the opportunity to share ideas with other travelers. Our room was LARGE with a mini fridge and microwave and lots of space which was nice since there was 5 of us. We appreciated that! The beds were SO comfortable and had 5 pillows on each one. Loads of comfort and coziness here folks!

The only complaint I have and it isn't really a complaint just a frustration we had is there is only 1 washer/dryer set. I found us competeing with other guests to use them, but that really wasn't a big deal. The washer that is there is a very large front loader and had plenty of space to do a HUGE load of laundry for $2.50.

The quirky part of our stay was when the fire alarm went off around 9pm one night. It was a sorry sounding alarm but enough to cause us some alarm and peek outside the door to see what was going on. The alarm went off for 5 minutes or so and we never did see any fire trucks arrive so we eventually went back to bed. The front desk called our room about 40 minutes later to ask if we were ok. My son answered the phone or else I would have questioned what in the world was going on. Oh well, it made a good story for us and added adventure to our trip.

This is a great place to stay with a great location, MUCH better than anywhere you will find in Eureka. It is worth it to stay here and then do the short drive to Eureka each day. There are too many tweakers and full time live in families in the hotels in Eureka for my taste.

We will stay here again with no pause given!

Super friendly staff at check in, very clean room, and comfortable beds. Breakfast was substantial, and the cost of our 1 night, Saturday stay was extremely reasonable. I highly recommend this hotel.

Clean and fresh-smelling rooms, comfortable beds. Breakfast provided, including make-your-own waffles, yogurt, hardboiled eggs, cheese, cereals and more. We were located near the front of the inn and could hear some of the noise from 101. I suspect rooms in the back it would be a lot worse.

Dog friendly, but they do charge $20. Staff was very friendly on both check in and check out. A good, reasonably-priced lodging option.

We had a wonderful quiet room with a king bed and a jacuzzi tub for one . The room was clean and smelled fresh.  The bed was nice and firm, but not cement.  The shower was delightful, if there was a low flow shower head, I couldn't tell, and it you are tall, the showerhead was designed for you.  There is free wireless wi-fi, many restaurants and stores nearby.  We suggest the McIntosh Farm Country Store for breakfast.  The complimentary breakfast was very basic and boring.

We stayed here both comin' and goin' on our trip...  They have an accommodating staff, clean rooms, a nice dog/BBQ area, an indoor hot tub...and a pool that's half indoors and half out.

The only reason this didn't get a five star rating is that it is the hotel it is.  It's not a luxury resort...or a palatial anything.  It's a very nice Best Western in a small town on the northern California coast.

We stayed here for our recent Redwoods trip after reading the reviews.  They were spot on. This place is immaculate and convenient. On arrival we were a little worried about road noise and an already barking dog next door but Samantha changed our room without a blink.  Our new room was great, we barley heard any noise at all, great shower, plenty of towels and clean, clean.  Every one was polite and friendly.  My only suggestion would be to move the smoker pots off the balcony, which was close to our room and encourage the smoking area because my review might be different if someone had lit up and we had smoke in our non smoking room.  Sorry smokers but it stinks.

Nicely kept old style more-like-a-motel-place. Rooms were clean, beds very comfortable and breakfast choices were many.  Good value for the money.

We had a room with two queen beds that was spacious enough except for the tiny as a closet bathroom. Sink was adjacent and outside of bathroom which worked great for our party of three adults.  On Friday the place was pretty full but no problems with noises coming through the walls.

Walkable non-chain  places for dinner just down the street made it very convenient.

I gave this a three because of the neighborhood. People and dogs camped out along the road in cars and trailers. Even walking my doberman at night didn't feel safe. I know that problem is on the city not the hotel, but it is what it is. The room was clean. The staff was friendly. Over priced because of the semi-homeless problem.

Super friendly staff with warm !  Clean rooms. But the building is old. There are not enough outlets for modern day electronics. The coffee pot has to be moved in order to be used/plugged in. Plumbing from other rooms is noisy. In room refrigerator was noisy all night long. Unreliable wi- fi. Nighttime/highway traffic loud. Breakfast good with waffle maker but nowhere to sit.

Good ol' Best Westerns. I can always count on 'em! Best Westerns are pretty decent hotels. This one is pet friendly--only $20 to to let your furry friend stay with you, but you can't leave it unattended (understandable since pets can make a mess of things). This was fine for me since my dog pretty much sleeps in the car (the only thing my mom and I had to look for was a shady parking place!), but it posed a problem when it came to breakfast. I strongly suggest bringing your pup's crate if you really must leave your dog in the room alone (the worst it can do is bark).

They even have an extensive grassy area for your four legged friends to run around on with a few picnic tables and bags to pick up your pooch's poop!

The bottom line: check it out!

    Great place for the money!

Like other reviews said - don't judge it by the exterior. The rooms are new on the inside, very clean and spacious. The beds are very comfortable and there's tons of room for your gear. The indoor/outdoor pool and jacuzzi were also spotless and fun for a quick dip. We didn't eat the breakfast as we are big Los Bagels (Arcata) fans.

I went to school at HSU ~20 years ago and this area is much cleaner/nicer than then. There were zero issues with homeless or otherwise during our stay. It was quiet, clean and private.

Like all hotels, you can hear your neighbors a little bit. However, on our bottom floor room, we didn't hear the upstairs neighbors at all.

I'll stay here again for sure - great value.

Excellent customer service.  Aaron at the front desk was so kind. And at the fee of $80/night for 2 queen beds, it felt like a steal compared to $150 right across the way.  The rooms were nice.  Well kept with clean and pretty linens,  a great hot shower, a mini fridge,  free wifi, and a location that's 10 minutes from hiking in Trinidad,  and 15 minutes from Lost Coast Brewery.  Its location is perfect. Food, market, gas, and freeway all in one. And as to the person who said the neighborhood was bad, I'm not sure where they were staying.  There was one homeless person about a block from the hotel that didn't move. No one was camping out in the road. We felt perfectly safe.   We will not think twice when returning to the redwoods. This Best Western is our resort of choice. Thank you again Aaron for all of your help!

This place was quite a pleasant find.  It's my no means a Four Seasons, but for the money it's a great value.  They're also dog friendly.

The rooms were nice and clean with some really nice touches such as a raised show head neck and curved shower curtain rail.  The bed was comfortable and clean.  The staff was also very nice.

When I'm in the area I'd gladly stay here again.

Dog friendly. We walked in and the receptionist matched the Internet Only rate.

This Best Western is a great example of how to turn an old, outdated motel in a little TripAdvisor gem.

It's obvious that the hotel "bones" are old but you would never tell once inside your room. The beds are on par with the Westin Heavenly bed - very soft and comfy. WiFi was smoking fast. Breakfast was a nice spread with the typical carbs (cereal, muffins, bagels) but with fresh fruit, mozzarella sticks and boiled eggs.

The dog area is in the back of the hotel. In the morning, you'll see all the other dog parents in various stages of dress walking their dogs back and forth along the back fence.

I have stayed at this particular BW several times over the last 20 years or so. It is always my default choice when visiting the Redwoods.

The staff at check-in is friendly, the rooms are clean, the showers hot, the spa clean and hot and the continental breakfast better than most. The location is perfect, particularly those travelling south to north. For the price, this is an excellent value.

We'll be back on our next visit.

The star of this place was the customer service. Taking a trip for the first time with a baby, my sister and I were thrilled with the friendly service of the two desk clerks who helped us with advice and directions. The room was clean and the beds comfortable with a lot of pillows and no gross comforters. The bathroom was clean too with great water pressure. The pool was a bit cool for a dip in March, but looked nice. There was a nice lawn for kids to play on.  The hotel seemed to be pet friendly, although we didn't have our dogs with us. The breakfast was basic, self-serve and the coffee was ok. The cost was very reasonable - cheaper than its neighbors and just as nice, or nicer.

For an economy hotel, this one was just what I needed. Reasonable price, clean room, decent beds, and breakfast included. The staff was very friendly and very helpful when the kids upstairs were playing tag at 10pm. The pool was fun with it being half inside and half outside. The bathrooms could use an update, but all in all, I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others!

I was in town for business and picked this because typically I'm a fan of Best Westerns. Overall my stay was fine. It was easy to get in and out and parking was easy. The hotel is old and not updated. The room I had was a good size but pretty basic.

The reason I give this hotel a 2 star rating is that when I woke up this morning I found ants in the room which is disgusting and a personal pet peeve. There weren't a lot but since I keep finding them crawling around in my car, purse and recently out of the keys of my laptop I'm not thrilled. I did go down to the front desk and let them know, quietly and discretely, about the situation when I checked out and they told me "Oh sorry, it's kind of a regional problem ha ha.." Not funny. Needless to say, when I'm back in town next month I'll be finding other lodging.

The hotel was very nice. Looks kind of old from the outside but the room was updated and very clean and modern. Two months after our one-night stay at the Best Western Arcata Inn, I have trouble remembering what the hotel looked like.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  We arrived late on a Tuesday night during Thanksgiving week, and left early the following morning.  What we wanted and needed was a clean, comfortable, hassle-free place to sleep - and that's what we got.

The beds were comfortable, the pillows, in particular, were great.  The beds didn't have ugly, unsanitary comforters, which is a big plus for me.  There was basic furniture and a large flat-screen TV.  The bathroom could probably have used more towels, and it was on the small side, but there was good water pressure.

Breakfast was adequate, with a waffle machine, toasters and cereals.  The breakfast area was tiny and crowded, however.

I paid $77 through a TripAdvisor deal.  We stayed mid-week in November, 2014.
