this was really a wonderful hotel; a nice surprise!  first, we got a good rate:  68.00.  say that you read about them in the AAA guide & you'll get an additional 5% off whatever rate they quote.  they are in the local hotel guide booklets, so that can get you a cheaper rate, too.

the front desk people were extremely cheerful, helpful and proud of their hotel both the night we checked in and the next morning.  the room was roomy & very clean, comfy king sized bed.  the free breakfast was served in the restaurant, served by waitresses in a civilized way, not at a "trough".  5 different breakfast choices with your free breakfast coupon, my husband had eggs/bacon/toast, i had oatmeal; both very good.  BUT the best thing about this hotel is the courtyard in the middle where the pool/hot tub are.  lots of palm trees & other plants, very tropical & nice.  walkway around the whole thing.  oh, yes, our upstairs room had a BIG private balcony - i think all the upstairs rooms had that.  this is a great  place - can't wait to go back, actually!

i just read the other reviews & i just disagree.  this place was great and we have been traveling all around the country for 2 weeks.  each to his own, i guess.  i would say, give it a try.

Hotel staff friendly upon arrival. Facility is old with popcorn ceilings and obvious patch repairs from old leaks. It rained lightly during our stay and buckets were in lobby catching water. Leaks everywhere. Cover-up perfume smell in rooms. Extremely noisy group in room 118 (right near front lobby) kept everybody awake till 3am with yelling & basically rioting in the hallways. NO HELP from front desk. NO RESPONSE despite repeated calls. Almost called 911. Felt unsafe ... to put it mildly!

Good place when you need to stop but not the greatest!! Checked in on Thursday around 9pm and by 12am my card had been broken into!! Staff was not the moat sympathetic...when I checked out I noticed they charged me for a pet (didn't have one) and they charged me the safe fee..check your bills!!

For what it's worth, this place isn't bad. The dinner wasn't expensive and actually had flavor. The pricing for the rooms isn't terrible, considering that it includes a *full* and delicious country breakfast in the morning, and access to their pool, jacuzzi, and exercise facility. I have a few beefs that should be known, though. There aren't enough power outlets in the rooms and I had to move a piece of furniture to plug my laptop in. The jacuzzi had plant debris in it and the jets didn't do much but splash water everywhere... the water was a bit too hot, too. The elliptical machine in the exercise room felt like it was about to fall apart, but to be fair, I could have just plugged my iPod into its built-in speaker so I could drown out the squeaking noises it was making. I was in a room facing the gas station and I was still very comfortable during the night. The walls are very thin, so I heard some guy's phone ring in the next room and could hear him talking, but the bed was comfortable enough that I went back to sleep quickly. Next time I might search for a slightly nicer place, but this is *not* a bad fallback at all. Oh yeah, fix your shower drains and light switches!

Spent May 21, 2010-read other reviews re: this hotel.
Check in was easy, desk staff was polite, slight glitch regarding online reservation and credit card was resolved.  All staff were polite, not really knowledgeable about Bakersfield(Buck Owens & Lefty Frizelle were probably rolling in their graves by this time).
Gardens and interior patio were very well kept.  Parked car this Friday night, about 20 feet from door.  Room was very clean, but, if newly renovated, had to be 50's retro???  Bathroom was recently re-done.  Bed was large & comfortable.  Bedding clean and no smell.  Need to bring in LCD-TV's.  Cable was there and working well. Room was quiet, with hotel about 3/4 full.
Breakfast in the morning was at restaurant across parking lot.  Good and with ticket I got at desk, free--good deal.  Waitresses were good ole gals-knew all the "truck drivin tales"-and told em.
Would stay here again-prefer the LA QUINTA INN, about two stops farther up the 99.

After some time in substandard sleeping quarters it was a huge and unexpected relief to arrive at this Best Western in Bakersfield. Nice pool, large clean rooms, even the hallways seemed  freshly vacuumed. The wifi was spotless and our room even had a nice view of some trees located inside the property. Upon checkout I found I had cut myself, the young lady at the front desk went  out of her way to find me a bandaid. I could not have had a more relaxing stay.

This place is FABULOUS, and what a treat for the weary traveler coming  in from a hilly desert drive! I can't speak highly enough of the staff and all the nice touches that welcomed us and made us feel comfortable! After staying in several mom n' pop budgety motels, and then coming here, I will no longer take for granted things like a clock on the nightstand, and things functioning the way they should, not being in a state of disrepair - that's what you get with the mom n' pop places. However, I should stress that this place was very, very affordable - $97 for a king size bed in an oversized room!  The rooms have several surfaces for you to spread out on, set up your computers AND your suitcases. The chairs are comfortable and the decor is tasteful enough, even though it's "motel art" of course. The lobby had a big vase of flowers greeting incomers, and those wonderful, helpful brass luggage carts are plentiful to help you load in. The only criticism I would give here, would be that there is no elevator to the 2nd floor. On the plus side, check-out time in noon, an hour later than most motels, which seem to be around 11am on the average - so you get to have a full relaxing morning here if you need it. Yay Best Western - I'm your newest fan!

From the outside and inside the front desk area of this BW you would think that this hotel has been renovated or maintained its quality. As we were walking towards our room i noticed the large pool, well kept grounds / courtyard, and a small but quaint exercise room. There is parking all around the hotel, but it gets extremely packed on Fri & Sat nights so you may have to spend sometime time driving around looking for a spot.

Our room was located on the 1st floor with a large sliding glass door that opens onto the courtyard. The queen sized beds were not firm whatsoever and the sheets / cover had that old moldy smell. The room has a small refrigerator and coffee maker. The water pressure in our bathroom was horrible. Its funny how this BW describes its rooms as "newly remodeled and well appointed rooms"....uuummmm.....no, more like they were remodeled or well appointed in the 70's or 80's.

The only saving grace is that you get a free full breakfast in the mornings at its adjacent restaurant (i think 7am - 11am). You will need to take your daily vouchers with you to redeem your meal. Now, the restaurant is small and it gets packed on the weekends so you may opt to going across the street to Denny's or IHOP.

First off when I took a shower only the hot water worked. That's okay if you like burning water for a shower. Second I had no water coming out of the sink. Used bath to brush my teeth. Overall I don't think I would stay here again even if it saved a few $. Going back to the Clarion.

I spent one night at this hotel a few days ago, and it turned me off of Best Western forever.  The room had cockroaches and seemed like it hadn't been vacuumed or otherwise cleaned in detail for quite a long time.  The shower was weak, the plumbing was only capable of moving about half of the flow from the tap to the shower-head, and the drain was clogged so badly that the water was up to my ankles by the time I was finished with my shower.  The common areas, aside from the lobby, were dirty and dingy.

When the desk clerk asked me how my stay was in the morning, I mentioned the cockroaches, and she smiled and shrugged.  I would have liked to fill out a complaint form, but none was offered.

The following evening, I contacted Best Western customer service on Twitter, and they were apologetic and asked me to send an email.  I did, and they still haven't gotten back to me.

One night in a dual-queen room was about $80, with the AAA discount, after tax.

I stayed at the Best Western Crystal Palace for Thanksgiving weekend. I was convinced to stay there instead of La Quinta Inn which was $10-a-night cheaper and literally a stone's throw away by the enticing thought of a "real country breakfast" that comes free with any room at the Crystal Palace. I figured $10 per day is worth paying if it includes breakfast and would save me the trouble of hunting down a breakfast joint each morning.

Unfortunately when I arrived, I was informed that my stash of breakfast tickets would go to waste because they were remodeling the cafeteria--and serving customers a continental breakfast instead of a hot breakfast. One look at the quivering mound of oatmeal that sat out from 7 am on was enough to send me looking for the nearest IHOP, which was not a pretty sight by any means.

After bringing up the fact that I was duped into staying at the hotel with the front desk (the ole bait-and-switch eh?) they made no apologies and informed me that there were no discounts for not receiving a hot breakfast, "since the breakfast is normally a free extra service and therefore you are only losing out on something you didn't pay for in the first place". I did not buy their BS. I wish I would have been informed about the breakfast situation so that I could have saved my money and frankly, given it to the less-shady competition around the corner.

The rest of my stay at the Best Western Crystal Palace was pleasant and I truly did enjoy the gaudy Christmas decorations that covered every square inch of the hotel but I felt misled by the whole hot breakfast thing. I would have given only 1 star but I found redemption in the hot tub one morning after hubby and I discovered it still full of water. In November. The maids all looked at us like we were crazy because no Californian in their right mind would have been wearing so little at that point in the season, but now that I live in Minnesota I have earned the right to hot tub in November if it's above 50 degrees.

This place does not even deserve a half of a star, I have never been treated so disrespectfully in my life. The rooms are dirty dusty and outdated, the staff is rude ghetto and confrontational. A male staff member of the hotels walked into my room unannounced while I was changing. He claimed to have been coming to fix the sink, but without knocking? The manager and female dog front desk employee accussed me of lieing, wouldn't give me a refund. They also told me I had to leave cuz the room was in my boyfriends name. The T*&% at the front desk threatened to call the police. I left came back with my boyfriend they kicked us out again. Completey ridiculous, and unheard of. I would recommend ANYTHiNG but this CON artist hotel, they invaded my privacy and than basically robbed me of the little $80. Complete low life staff and managment. I would rather sleep in a park.

I love this place! I'm back for a second night after thinking I'd only stay one. This place costs a little more than I tend to allow myself to spend, but I liked it so much I found myself heading straight back there when I needed to spend a second night in town. My room and bed are giant, extremely clean, furniture and coverings all new and in very nice shape. There is a mini-fridge and microwave, and the jacuzzi is nice and warm and nicely lit at night for an after-dark soak. There is a security guard that patrols the parking lot at night, which set my mind at ease about my car being broken into. Clean, spacious, and comfortable is the simple summary here. I'll happily return here any time I need to spend a night in Bakersfield.

I was compelled to comment after reading some very poor recent reviews. Reserved a 2 queen bed room for $75. Arrived on motorbikes (on the way from the SF bay area to Death Valley) and were treated great, immediately offered special, covered parking for the bikes. Room was clean and modern, good beds and pillows. Fairly quiet considering it's right off a major highway, slept through the night with no earplugs. Free sit-down breakfast in an actual restaurant. Makes me wonder what people are expecting from a $75-a-night Bakersfield motel?

My friend's room had just been cleaned and it smelled heavily of bleach for a few hours.  My room was fine.  They're decently sized and the second floor rooms have large balconies.

Plenty of parking.  Close to highway and some fast-food restaurants.

Perk:  they give complimentary breakfast tickets and although the tickets say "no substitutions" and that the free meal consists of bacon/sausage, eggs, toast, and coffee/tea/juice , they actually have a special menu with a few options to choose from.  The only option on the list that I was able to veganize was the fruit, cereal, toast, and juice meal.  They only had cow milk, so I ate my cereal dry.

They have a nice courtyard with a pool.

Came to Bakersfield for a family event and since the family was living in Delano (25 miles north) we thought it would be better for us to Bunk in Bakersfield. I love best western since they have really upgraded their properties lately so picked this one off of their web site. Really wanted to like this and figured it was Ok for the first night, needed serious updating but other than that seemed to be Ok. On the second night my wife got up to use the restroom and was greeted by a roach. Hmm are they charging extra for this? Anyway we went downstairs in the morning ate breakfast (which is great by the way) and told the front desk clerk about our extra guest. She then asked if I wanted to speak to a manager (Duh, YES). Manager shows up and gives me a list of excuses(there's so much greenery they are hard to control. I spray inside and out all the time but they show up). NOT WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR!! The man never once offered to compensate me or anything. Went back to room and called BW guest relations. Lady took a lot of info put me on hold and called the hotel wo then comped me. Mow I' m not really picky but roaches kind of push the envelope with me. Not acceptable and best western needs to yank this places certification. Great location, has the ability to be a superb hotel it just doesn't get anywhere close. Management is atrocious. My advise try the Laquinta next door.

You know those piece of dung stink holes you are warned about on road trips, in fear that you may not live the night?

The Best Western Crystal Palace is one of these places.

On the way back from Vegas to LA, and I could not stay awake for the life of me, and I had people passed out and suffering from the sun (and fun) in the car. Our fault for partying one more night and trying to drive back early to LA instead of pacing ourselves like good girls should.

No one wanted to go any of the other cheaper dirty hotels, so we pooled what money we had left and got a room. Expedia couldn't get us anything decent in Bakersfield, so we had to do it the old fashioned way and ended up driving to the Best Western, hoping would live up to their name of quality.

HOLY MOLEY, what a dump. We should have slept out in the desert on top of cactus. that would have been more enjoyable.

    - Not only did someone ignore that there is no smoking in the rooms, but there is the DISTINCTIVE odor of DOG that remained, and someone tried to mask it with heavy air freshner. Enough of the spray to leave a film on the mirror and TV that you could wipe and smell with your finger.

    - The bathroom. Someone did not do a good job of cleaning, because there was a used condom stuck in between the toilet cover and the seat. HOW the HELL do you miss that?

    - How on earth does mildew that BLACK stay on under the shower head? It's too HOT And DRY, yet there it is.

    - Evidently SOMEONE had a dog or animal in the room, because we have bug bites. Not even 30 minutes in, and Cassie and I were bit on the legs. And we could find dog hair in nice puffs around the air conditioning.

    - No, I don't give a crap what you may think of me as to how I look. I may look like a hooker who worked her ass off all night, but I am still a paying customer. You can keep your condescending attitude to yourself. (And that means YOU, Front Desk agent Marty).

    - And I would PERSONALLY like to thank the management and upper level staff at the Best Western Crystal Palace for NOT BEING THERE when something goes wrong. We called the front desk to have someone come up to the room to see what was wrong, we get the answering machine that tries to connect us with another room.  I walk down the corridor in just a towel and my shoes, dangling the condom on one of the room's coat hangers for EVERYONE to see.  Because you need to see the FRESH bite marks on my legs I just got.

And of course, SURPRISE, no one at the front desk! Except some kids, so I thought it best not to ruin some children and went to the room.

Thank GOD the outlet mall was nearby and we all went to do some retail therapy.

There is not enough space on the internet to write how bad this experience was. Cassie even decided to sleep a little bit in the car rather than stay the night, but the very friendly bikers would not give her any peace. And I am not going to even go into how often we had people knock on our door thinking they could find a "good time" and we were working girls.  WTF!!! What kind of SECURITY do you have around here?

So, in short, the sweaty, dirty armpit of America? Right here, in Bakersfield, at the Crystal Palace.

Oh, and to Miss Lomile. Thank for your hospitality, Jennifer. When we asked to speak with a manager and complain, your morning staff pointed us to you, but you went to quickly go deal with someone else's B.S. Your attention to detail is appreciated.

Yikes! We stayed at this place on our way from Sacramento to New Mexico. We just needed a place to sleep and get the heck out of Bakersfield. This place took for ever to process our gift card. There was one person behind the desk that knew how to process it but he was trying to make some other new girl learn how to process it.

We started the check out process and figured it was taking a while so we would go eat with our free breakfast coupon. I was hoping it would be more La Quinta continental breakfast style where you grab and go. No, it was a sit down restaurant with "no to go's." The "restaurant" looked like some abandoned restaurant where the decor was screaming "get the heck out of here, you aren't welcome!" So we quickly snacked on our pancakes and went back to the front dest expecting that they had processed our gift card and checked us out.

The new girl was still trying to figure the process out. The other front desk man was telling her what to do instead of just taking over and doing it and saving the lesson for another time where it wasn't wasting my time.

We often stay at best westerns and have a good experience... Nice service and the room was clean but the walls are paper thin. You can hear everything going on in the rooms next to you! I must say the night shift is so much nicer than the day shift which is weird it should be the other way around but seriously the girls were horrible in the front 2nd day we were there I left my keys in the room and my Id on top of that so the lady escorted me all the way to my room it was just me, my sister, and my 9mo old baby this whole trip she followed me opened the door and all my baby's stuff was everywhere and she still made me grab my Id which was fine but it was the way she carried herself out about the situation she told me she didn't know who's stuff it could be...like really. Then the last night we were there the room over flooded we had to switch rooms at 11:45 at night move upstairs to the 2nd floor with the baby and it was so hot in that room it took forever for the ac to cool it off. I do want to add that the night shift maintenance man Corey I Beleive his name is was the best he was so caring and made sure both nights we were ok and the service for breakfast was amazing but next time I'll spend my night at the Hampton. Best western does not care about there customers and front desk knows nothing about customer service such a shame because that's the first person we see.

So, we were moving from Northern California to North Carolina and the first leg of our trip, one of the cars breaks down in Bakersfield. It was in the evening and we had to scramble to find a place to stay that would also accept pets. This motel was great. They have a small wing at the back of the property with pet friendly rooms. The courtyard was perfect and quite a large area for walking our dogs. The rooms were very comfortable and well maintained. They may need a little updating, but for the price, we loved it.

I wanted to like this place more.  We stayed here because it was next door to the Crystal Palace, and we were in town seeing a show there.  Our room was large, and contained a fridge and microwave.  So far, so good.  But, you could hear people walking around on the floors above.  This is not something I'd experienced to this degree, and I've stayed at much worse motels in my day.  It was very loud, and very noticeable at all hours.

Also, there was a lag in the water temperature in the shower.  So, you would try to make it hotter, and realize a few seconds later when you are scalded that you went to far.  You then tried to cool it down, only to realize it was too cold.  So, that was beyond frustrating, I was never able to master it.

The staff was friendly, and we would probably stay here again if we were going to a show at the Crystal Palace.  It's so close, about a 1 minute walk.  Very easy in that regard.  Also, very close to a freeway on ramp.

Quick, friendly checkin. Room was as described and was non smoking as requested. Parking isn't great and its really close to a nasty super 8 with people that made my skin crawl. There was a group of bikers on the other side of the hotel from us. What really lost the stars was that the floor was filthy. I mean walk barefoot for a few mins and your feet are black! Did not let my 8 month old on the floor at all. Otherwise things seemed clean and well kept. Just the floors need really deep cleaning or replacing all together. Was a good stay for our family of four.

We will not be back. My husband had to wait 25 minutes for the "grab and go" breakfast. The breakfast was even palatable. One bite, it was in the garbage. The showers were a joke. There was a fine line between scalding and freezing. And the time it took to adjust may be part of the reason southern California needs more water.... Out toilet clogged with just a little toilet paper. Out microwave didn't work properly. To turn it on, you had to plug and unplug it.... otherwise it just would run without the magnitron activated. It took 5 minutes to pop half a bag of popcorn. After that we gave up for fear of burning what actually had popped. The front desk staff couldn't keep the booking right. We mentioned numerous times we were there for a funeral and they kept confusing us with an Agricultural Convention that was also there. Not the same..... On the last day, we found beetles in the room. Yea, we were done.
The ONLY reason this place gets 2 stars is the location. Good freeway access. Walking distance to a few places including IHOP and a convenience store at Arco next door. Unless this place gets a MAJOR interior upgrade and food upgrade, I don't see us staying here again. We paid for "amenities" that didn't work. Won't make that mistake again.

Pool is great! Large swim area. Even a bbq pit, which we took advantage of since my husband loves to grill. Stayed here for 2 or 3 days with my kids. Had 2 rooms connecting. 3 stars are given for...

swimming we had no towels from the front desk. They kept saying they were drying. Now if ur pool opens at 9, towels should be available especially if you have a sign saying NOT to use room towels. This was a common occurrence according to other guests who stayed previously, as well as on our 2nd day. We ended up using our towels from our rooms. Housekeeping came to clean our rooms, and guess what!! They didn't stock any clean towels!!

Breakfast: u receive a ticket for each guest. They gave me 4 tickets for 2 rooms!? Seruously? I had 2 adults and 7 children! My older 2 are teenagers and eat like adults but they gave me children tickets which consist of one egg and a bacon or sausage and a mini, I'm talking mini juice. My poor kids were still hungry. I had to demand more food tickets. For the price of the hotel,  you really shouldn't regulate the amount of food someone eats. Your advertisement says hot breakfast complimentary..not limited!

Rooms: so so. AC did not work so well in my room but the other was great. I do like the balcony. The fridge wasn't even cold either.

Overall would not stay again. The woman who booked my stay was very pleasant. But will not be using your hotel establishment in the future.

I stayed here last night. At check in, the front desk was polite, checked me in promptly. The room was basic, nothing special. While checking out, I guess there was a miscommunication about the price I was told. Curtis, who was manning the desk, was being polite and trying to correct their mistake. The manager Rose, came over and rudely told him to keep the more expensive rate. For the price I was charged, I could have stayed at the padre, which is a way better hotel.  Save yourself the headache and STAY AWAY!! Don't let this be your first choice!

Booked this room 2 hours in advance through the 1-800 number. Had no idea what to expect. For a last minute booking we scored with this place.

Arrival: Rebecca was very sweet at the front desk, her badge said night auditor in training, good luck Rebecca! We were assigned an upstairs room and she located us a first floor non smoking room when we asked. Easy peasy, great customer service.

The room: clean, didn't smell like smoke, air conditioned, well stocked with towels, toiletries, and coffee for 2. Shower was nice and clean, the water pressure was kind of soft and occasionally my shower went temperature bi-polar on me which sucked which is why this place lost a star.

The property: I wish we could have stayed longer because the pool area looked beautiful. The workout room had a decent amount of stuff for a motel gym, would have liked to get a mile in. There are vending machines all over the place here plus an am\pm that's open 24 hours right next door. There's tons of parking too which is patrolled by security.

Breakfast: Free actual breakfast. Epic. You get a menu and coffee and service and the food was decent. My mom had an omelette and I had oatmeal. Good food. Great service. Even though the food is free, don't forget to tip your waitress! Greta and David were very nice and lovely servers.

    I would definitely return here.

The building itself needs some modernisation but the rooms are okay though however you if you want a microwave in your room you need to ask for one.  Yes they have free wifi and all that however if you would like them to email you a confirmation or your receipt they cannot handle that task with their current system.  I recommend you stay on the second story with a view to the courtyard its a tropical paradise you have a private balcony and you feel a million miles away.

All in all I always come back to this place when I'm in Bakersfield it's a bit of a throwback you know.

Front desk and housekeeping woke me up regularly when I was working nights.  They said I could check out at 2 o'clock, put it in the computer, then woke me up to kick me out at noon! This place sucks, staff sucks, room sucks!

My company put me up in this motel while down here for work.

I pulled up and noticed it was in an old part of town and really dirty looking. My initial feelings were correct about the place. The room I was in opens to the outdoor hallway.

I walk in the room and first thing I do is get the remote to turn on the news. As I'm reaching for the remote I see a small cockroach on top of the microwave. I kill it and now I'm wondering how many more there is. I find one more on the microwave and one above on the Wall where the tv is. I check behind the bed and everywhere else. It's been a long day and I needed to shower.

I try to brush it off and take a shower. But I keep thinking if there is more or not. After I shower I'm sitting on the edge of the bed. I get up to inspect the sheets  and when I get up I see a small cockroach was right underneath me!

I snap a picture and I gather my things as fast as I could. I get a new hotel away from this part of town at the Holiday Inn Express. This is where I should have been booked in the first place.

Cockroaches, dirty floors, no elevator (when you're on the 2nd floor with a baby and a million things for said baby no elevator can be difficult), then you have manager who could honestly care less that you just paid money to stay at their establishment. What happened to guest services and hospitality? I've stayed at many best westerns and my experience at this particular one has made me think I'll never stay at another best western again. Go to la quinta, which is comparable in price but way better...they actually want your business.

This hotel is older, but still a nice enough place to stay. I kind of enjoyed the obvious age. The lobby was actually kind of pretty.

The huge pool is surrounded by impressive palm trees, and most of the rooms have a view of it. Our first floor room had oversized sliding doors which opened right to the courtyard and pool. It was pretty.

The complimentary breakfast included six choices, and all were served by a waitress and cooked to order. It was a nice change from the usual hotel breakfast.

The hotel is pet friendly, which always makes me like a hotel just a bit more.

We had contact with three different employees there, and they could all use some training. They came across as annoyed and impatient. Don't they know that customers are what keep their business running and should not be treated as a chore? Lol

For the price (we paid around $75 for a double) this was fine. Room felt clean, bathroom was clean, coffee maker in room. Parking is kind of a bitch, but overall no complaints.

Free breakfast at the onsite diner, which is AWESOME and full of old-time diner character.

    Good value overall!
