Ok so a couple weekends ago a bro of mine and I decide to head up to Hollywood so we could fist pump the night away. We needed somewhere to crash and he found the Coral Sands. Yes other reviewers praise it for it's price but there's a reason it's so cheap. This place is so run down and there was a mirror next to my bed. That's just weird. We found two good things here though. Fridge in the room and instant hot water for our showers.  Oh and we didn't get axe murdered. Thank god. 2.5 stars.

checked in, walked into my room, turned around and checked out. felt bad when i did though, the staff was friendly enough, but it's like they didnt want me to leave. they kept asking why and i finally said because this place is gross.

    total shithole.

I stayed here for Halloween weekend and it was great. It's a gay friendly motel. Its cheap and clean. The pics on their website are truly what the rooms look like, however it looks like a dump from the outside. I was kinda freaked out when I drove up, but then again youre getting what you pay for. Its super close to Hollywood and hyland and all the shopping. There's a Ross, Ralphs, Quiznos, and starbucks right nextdoor. If your looking for a clean, convenient, friendly staffed motel where you can be comfortable without all the glitz and glamour and be yourself then this is the place to stay. I will definatly be back.

Ok, the employees were friendly enough (if slightly clueless), and the location isn't bad for the price. The courtyard area wasn't totally disgusting. But the rooms were. We got two rooms and they were both appalling. The mirrors next to the beds screamed "porno filmed here." One of our non-smoking rooms smelled like it had been designated as such for a very short time. We had a serious ant problem in our bathroom, and I GOT THREE FLEA BITES from sleeping in these disgusting, firmer-than-cement beds. You'll regret staying here.

We got there at night and the place looked super sketchy. The front desk person had to buzz us into the hallway (nice safety measure I guess). The hallway and stairwell were poorly lit and I almost fell down the stairs. Got to our room and it looked like the carpet and bedding hadn't been changed since the '70s - they were filthy and threadbare. The bathroom door didn't stay shut and the bathroom was tiny (if I bent over just a little to use the sink, my butt hit the door and swung it open - and I do not have a big bum!) The TV was the size of my work computer, super tiny. I was scared my fiance and I would get lice and/or bedbugs, but thankfully there's been no sign of that... yet! And no free breakfast in the morning?! Just as well, since at this place you could probably just expect some dry old nasty bread and some juice (still though, a modest little breakfast would have made the whole experience a little nicer). Thank God the parking was free and there was hot water (kinda) to shower with. The pool and hot tub looked nice, but I never saw anyone using them and we didn't have time. The front desk people were nice, for LA people.

For the price we paid - nearly 100 buckaroos for the night - my wallet and my dignity were left a little wounded. I felt we could have done a lot better. Do yourself a favor and either spend a little more money to stay somewhere nice, or go somewhere out of the city to stay somewhere cheaper AND nicer.

We liked the place a lot until we were leaving after the 2nd night and discovered bunches of bed-bug bites up and down my arms and legs. The manager says he does a do-it-yourself treatment with diatomaceous earth.  He returned our money.  Unfortunately they do not call a real exterminator to get rid of the bugs and have no moral qualms about assigning people the inadequately treated room.  We had to wash everything when we got home and leave the suitcase outside in the sun and still we worried. We have invested in a carpet steamer.  We had hoped a vacation would relax us!

I stayed here a few weeks ago and I was impressed.  The price was great, clean, friendly staff,  free computer downstairs to look things up, and free parking.  It's across the street from the metro, so depending on where you are going you can leave your car at the motel and take the metro instead - save on parking that way!

My friend and I went to Los Angeles for a budget weekend getaway (emphasis on the budget) and I found this little gem tucked about a mile from the center of Hollywood.

In mid- March, we paid $70 out the door for a room with one King sized bed. Here are the pluses for the Coral Sands Hotel:

**A little run down, but really nice and clean. No bedbugs, no mold, clean towels everyday, smells ok.
**Staff is friendly. Called a cab for us, offered an extra blanket, left extra towels in the bathroom - they must have known that two women need more than two towels between the two of them. They were very accommodating when we didn't fit into their cleaning schedule, too.
    **Free wifi and free parking.
**Mini-fridge in the room. This was a pleasant surprise since the website didn't mention it. This is also nice because Ralph's grocery store is literally right next door.
**Super close to the Hollywood sights and clubs and shopping. ~$7 cab ride away
**I think the website represents this motel well.
**Small walk in closet, which helps to alliviate mess in the small rooms.
**Half a block away from the subway.

Here is the "meh" portion of Coral Sands:
*It is a little run down: bumpy parking lot, sad exterior, walk through a kinda ugly cooridor to get to your roomm which has been decorated with painted walls and furniture from 1982.
*The room was small, and the bathroom was tiny.
*You have to walk to the gym area (basically a weight machine) to use a microwave (but al least there is one!)
*There is only one entrance, and if you have a lot of stuff, you can't park near your room.

In all, I really liked this place - the price was right and all the amenities fit my lifestyle. Four stars!

This was the single most uncomfortable bed I've ever slept on in my life! Other than that, it was a pleasant stay... The grounds were well maintained and the staff was friendly and accommodating... It was just a horrible nights sleep with a crazy soar neck and back the next morning... But it was only like $85 a night, so I guess you get what you pay for... :(

First I have to say I really enjoyed my stay at the Coral Sands. My room had a view of the little garden in the back, the hot tub was great after a day of stressful driving, the room was comfortable and clean... The decor is a little old fashioned, but I found that pleasant and wouldn't change a thing.
The price was right, location perfect... I loved it.

Having said that... apparently this place used to have a reputation as a gay friendly place for friendly, I mean REALLY friendly gays. Well, not so much anymore... Don't get me wrong, there were some other gay guest, but no one being flirty or fun... There were also a lot of straight guest, some with kids. I would go so far as to say this place is (straight) family friendly. If you were hoping for some good old frisky frisky I fear those days are over.

Great, cheap, friendly, quiet, unique, and a great location for someone on a budget!!!

Pool! Cute 70ish styling, and definitely a friendly and welcoming diverse staffing!

Although typically known for being a 'gay' motel, anyone is welcome.

Despite their parking lot being open, I have never had problems, which maybe some tourists or travelers would have a problem with. Also many of the cars are a lot more expensive than my little bug.

It is pretty close to everything and a block away from the subway and bus lines that can take you ANYWHERE in Los Angeles.

Not to mention right of the footing of Ferndell park which has trails up to the Observatory in beautiful Griffith Park.

Also in the heart of Thai Town!

    - Friendly staff
    - Affordable
    - Free wifi
    - Affordable Coin laundry machine and dryer machine are provided ( During my stay it was 1.75 for drying and the same price washing)
    - jacuzzi
    - Swimming pool
    - Public microwave
    -Public ice machine
    - Mini fridge in each room
    - Public transportation friendly ( a train station and a several bus stops across the street which takes you to major attraction in hollywood: Universal Studio is 20 min away, Chinese theater is 15 min away, Downtown LA is 25 min away, Walk of fame is 20 min away and etc )
    - A nice little strip mall next door made grocery shopping easy ( Ralphs, Starbucks, Ross, Quizno's, Jumba Juice and etc).
    - 2 banks across the street ( Chase/ U.S bank)
    - Close to the HOLLYWOOD sign ( turn right on when you exit the motel, left on Franklin and right on Beachwood, drive all the way up, that's the closet you can get to the HOLLYWOOD sign. All less than 4 miles)
-15 minutes away from the Griffith Observatory and 5 minutes away from Griffith Park
    - Gay friendly

    - The hotel is a little run down ( it looks very 90's. However, while I was there, they were doing some renovations)
    - The pool doesn't heat up
    - Difficult to sneak people in
    - No cable tv, only local channel ( but why would you want to stay in your room watching cable tv?)

It's at great location, especially if you are a tourist on the budget. It's not a 5 star motel, but you get what you paid for. For those who talked down on this place on yelp, you certainly don't understand the meaning of " What you pay is what you get". Over all, it's a decent, nice, little motel what more can you ask for if you are trying to save some money and still have a good time?

My friend and I checked in last Friday.  When I first same the lobby I got chills just seeing how old dirty and disgusting the lobby was in appearance.  We proceeded to our room only to find a room that had very very old and outdated bedlinens that did not look clean.  I then pulled back the bed covers and revealed a very stained( with blood or human excrement) mattress.  I thought I was in hell. My friends nephew said maybe someone was killed there!  He was only kidding but I felt like I was in a hotel from hell. The worst part was when we contacted Hotels.com they would only refund 2 nights and we actually had to pay for one night.  Never never go to this hotel unless you want a frightening experience!!!!!!

I'm essentially a broke-ass, shoestring budget world traveler. Have stayed in all kinds of hotels, from the seedy to the shi shi. The Coral Sands is a very mellow, clean, low key and pleasurable place to kick it. The little courtyard and well maintained pool and jacuzzi are a cute central focal point to the place. The room I got was simple but tasteful in decor. Best of all, the staff are genuinely friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. The adjacent shopping complex and nearby Metro station and bus lines are awesome for convenience. The guest policy is nice too, just ask.

The only down side was the pool wasn't heated, but I can't say I blame the hotel as it was the off season when I visited.

I'd gladly stay there again and recommend it to anyone who wants a cute, comfortable place with warm ambiance on a budget. If ya want bougie, head to The Hilton.

Booked a room on Expedia for a 3 day weekend getaway. Got to the motel around 11pm, and the front desk staff was really helpful and friendly. They got us checked in and even carried one of our bags upstairs for us. The room was clean and had the basics...a bed, a small table, bedside tables, a dresser and a tv. It also had a closet with a safe to use while we were there. The bathroom was one of the not so great aspects...it was so small. You literally bumped into the sink while using the toilet and forget trying to dry off after a shower without the door open. The shower itself was great, with good pressure. The tv didn't get that many channels but it wasn't a problem for us because we didn't plan on spending much of our weekend in the room anyway. The motel is close to Hollywood Blvd (like, off of it...) and within walking distance to a grocery store, starbucks, and various other shopping destinations. Parking is tight and a little sketchy looking so don't leave valuables in your car. The good thing is, the front desk staff is there 24/7 and watch over the front door, which is the only way to get access to the rooms. I would stay here again!

I'd be a lot more happy about this place if they could get the wifi to work - for some reason it worked at 4 but won't work at all at 7, then worked again at midnight - but I must admit that after sinking into the spa after a long drive, I'm feeling more generous. The place has certainly seen better days, on the outside, but inside the rooms are extremely well taken care of. No water spots, fresh new bed and amenities, and while we stayed there they were in the process of renovating another room. Don't let the trim fool you, they put their budget where it matters most - except the wireless. Best of all, it's a cheap night, and sometimes that's all that matters.

One downside is that you have to be buzzed in by the counter, instead of having keycards, but I suspect that's to keep people from sneaking friends in. They have a very strict policy about visitors, they charge you to have one over and don't allow anyone not on the list to be on premises after 10 pm, they have to sign out. Keep that in mind if you want to try sneaking an extra person in.

This was the first place I stayed when moving out here to LA! It doesn't look like much, but it is nice. They have an outdoor pool and jacuzzi and its sorta set up like a garden with all the rooms surrounding the pool. It was clean and quiet and within a 2minute walk to the nearest metro station. Adjacent to a shopping center with a Ross and other nice restaurants.
They provide free wi-fi. My only issue is that they don't have cable t   I'm not even sure they have local channels. Other than that it wasn't bad

Great price, great location and very clean. Place hasn't been updated but that's why you get the budget price. Front desk was very helpful. Parking is close by and felt very safe! If your looking to be close to Hollywood, this hotel is a great option! Definitely don't  expect anything modern.

So I checked this place out on Yelp first and I was reluctant but then I thought who in the hell cares about yelp reviews anyway. I walked in and asked the guy behind the desk " Hey man, is this place clean? Cause I'll freak out if I find a bug in here, no joke I'll lose it". He said "no not at all! our rooms are clean, very clean. Want to see one" I seen the room and it was really clean. I also liked the layout of the place and that you have to walk past the desk to get to a room. The only thing that could be better is the wifi but who the hell needs to watch porn when your on vacation.

1 star thanks to the rude male receptionist who answer my phone call at 9:30am October 11 2014
I had simple question regarding hotel and pricing, he interrupted me every time and then he told he doesn't have time for this and I can find this information elsewhere.
When I asked if his manager can be more helpful than he was he hang up the phone and never picked up again
I thought to try new place to stay but it won't be this one

Its close to evrything, they dont charge for incidentals, the room was clean, the staff was personable and we could walk to tons of stores and food. The only things that weren't cool was having HBO but only four other channels and getting bummed for cigs so much i started selling em for a dollar oh yea i watched a homeless guy come into cvs and ACT delusional, obnoxious and when the cashier began to ignore him and his baligerant and random cries for things cvs didnt have like hamburgers and a cup of starbucks and looked away he stole a candy bar which was obviously his plan the whole time. I might have told on him but he put in some work to get that candy bar. Coral Sands is the best.

I booked a four-night stay here and it hit all the marks: cheap, clean and close to transportation. The lobby looks a little run-down when you walk in, but as someone who comes from a family of ultra budget travelers I've seen a LOT worse. The gentleman who works at the front desk in the evenings is very friendly.

The rooms are standard issue motel rooms with a generously-sized mini fridge. The bathroom is not so generous, though - it is TINY. You might have to do some careful maneuvering depending on how much junk you have in your trunk. There's a TV too, but don't expect to get hundreds of channels. There's free wi-fi but service is a little spotty. There is a pool and hot tub in the courtyard - I wasn't brave enough to swim in the pool in February but the hot tub was welcome after a long day of seeing the sights.

A microwave, dishes and utensils, a computer terminal, and laundry facilities are available in a common room near the lobby if you need to use them.

There is a shopping plaza right next door with everything you might need in case you forgot something - a Chase bank, a Ralph's (super bonus tip: if you have a Kroger card you can use it at Ralph's!), a Ross, a Starbucks, and a Quznos. There's also a CVS down the street on the corner of Hollywood and Western.

Public transit is amazingly close too. There's a bus stop on one corner of Hollywood and Western and a Red Line subway station across the street from that - two stops on the subway will take you right to the middle of Hollywood.

If I ever make it back to LA I'll be sure to book here again!

Stayed here on a last minute decision while having car repairs on a day trip to LA and booked it for a decent price on Expedia. For the price it was perfect, not deluxe but not awful. The gentleman at the front desk was very pleasant. I am a female and stayed alone and felt safe. Parking is free and very close. Only a few minutes away from the Griffith Observatory and next to grocery, coffee, and other stores. Had two hot water handles in my shower which was funny and interesting to play shower roulette with! Overall I would stay again.

Location location location, great place to stay the night after we went to the Greek for a concert. Hotel Coral Sands, my friend thought it was hot oral sex , lol , oh well good room to stay in for around $100 to avoid getting a DUI... The beds are hard but the bathroom is remodeled and clean. No bath tubs to cook up a fresh batch get's negative 1 star. Always great to have sex in a cheap Hollywood motel with my lady though!

Our hotel trifecta is (in order) cheap, in a good location, and having character. And we normally have to compromise on at least one of those, but we got all of those at the Coral Sands.

We arrived at 1am on a Thurs night but received prompt and helpful service as if it were peak arrival time. And this may not be news to anyone else, but in all my years if traveling this was the first time someone ever informed me that the license plate number of my rental would be on the key tag - thanks! He walked us to our room to have us look over it and it was perfect for us - a very comfortable bed, a good shower, and a fridge.

The courtyard had a serene touch to it also, with a couple of palm trees, a big pool, a jacuzzi, and a mini chill-out area. I enjoyed a couple of nights out in the jacuzzi as a cool wind blowed, watching the palms sway in front of the full moon.

You have a variety of places for meals, with coffee shops ranging from local places to Starbucks all within a few blocks. And if you like Thai, you're right on the boundary of Thai Town - or Heaven, in other words.

In any case, you're also across the street from the Hollywood/Western stop on the Metro, so it's very convenient to public transit. Or if you're driving, you're just a couple of minutes away from the action but the Coral Sands isn't in Crazy Traffic Land so you can navigate into or out of the place with ease.

All this with free parking for $90/night? The stuff that dreams are made of.

I have to say that my first impression wasn't terribly favorable. Although the external facade and lobby of the motel are attractive and well-kept, the peeling paint on the door and window frames and the poor condition of the second-floor walkway (not unsafe, but definitely unattractive) certainly gave me second thoughts as I walked from the lobby to my room.

Good thing I never rely too heavily on those first impressions, as I would have missed a very pleasant stay!

To begin with, the people who worked the front desk were some of the nicest and most helpful I've encountered in many years of staying in hotels and motels. I definitely felt like a welcome guest!

My room was small, but clean and attractive. Carpet, tile, furniture, paint, and fixtures all appeared new. The king-sized bed was a little firm for my tastes, but comfy enough. Air conditioning was provided via a wall unit that cooled the room efficiently...some might have found it a bit noisy, but it didn't bother me.

The free wi-fi also worked well...I had no problem at all with it at all.

The bath was small, but squeaky-clean, and appeared to have all new, or nearly new, fixtures (toilet, washstand, shower). I liked the shower, which was quite large and equipped with really nice slip-free tiles.

The pool and spa area is lovely! They do allow smoking in the pool area though, so if that's something you're likely to be bothered by you might want to give it a miss.

There common room near the lobby offers guests two coin-operated washers and dryers, free use of a desktop computer, and a microwave oven.

The location is excellent. Urban, but not frightening. I felt comfortable walking around by myself. There's a small shopping center next door with a Ralph's supermarket, a Ross, a Starbucks, and a couple of fast-food places. There are lots of good restaurants within easy walking distance or a short drive. Griffith Park is just a five-minute drive away, as is the L.A. Zoo. It's also very convenient to I-5 and US 101.

I'll definitely stay here again should I need accommodation in this part of L.A.

Wonderful staff, clean rooms, pefect for families as well as singles.  We were group of 11, the night shift manager squeezed us in despite his busy schedule. Room 230 is like a Emperor Suite, Room 115 is big enough to accommodate 4 and room 115 is a Cal King bed for a family of 4. Will stay only here again and again throughout 2015 since we got 2015 visit as many times pass to universal studios.  Check out time is 11 am. Room service ladies start at 9 am. Ample parking in the back. This is the hidden jewel for travellers in Hollywood.  7 miles from Universal Studios,  8 minutes from Walk of fame,  5 minutes to Observatory and few milee to Hollywood.  The best part ? $78/night. No one can beat that. Its a 3 star hotel . Seriously no more Motel 6, Studio 6, Best Western kinda craps.

Stay every month!!!! It's quaint not fancy at all by the way but a clean place to crash and get a shower. The courtyard is lovely, the staff even more so. I can't say enough about Pablo that works nights he is the sweetest. Used to be a gay motel long ago but apparently went straight. The rooms are ok the bathrooms are newer, the carpet well I never go barefoot in here I'll just say that. The fridge is a nice bonus. The beds are comfy in some rooms and not others. Internet is sketchy especially at night. Overall it's good enough for me to bring my hard earned $ to every month so that should tell you it's a hidden gem in a sea of overpriced hotels in LA. I have never had issues with bed bugs either which is a plus (cross my fingers). Just a decent place to crash if you expect that and nothing more you will enjoy the coral sands and its apparent comeback from the "dark side"

Update: I've heard from a few fellow San Franciscans that they used to have a 'reputation' (and quite a reputation it was! I remember having that much fun, way back when...) I guess that would explain the security precautions! But heck, there are no rodents or whatever... They're quite clean now. I'll totally stay there again, at least until they realize what a great location they have and jack their prices way up.

After researching for weeks on where to stay in Hollywood and not spending too much on lodging. I am glad I gave this place a try even though some of the reviews weren't so great. After booking on Expedia and reading reviews I am glad we stayed here. I had a great time as the place has a vintage feeling and it was fun just being in LA. The room was decent and clean. You do get what you pay for but I thought it was nice. The staff was very friendly and made checking in easy and painless. There are cameras around the motel so I wasn't worried about our car being broken into. Oh and did I tell you theres a Starbucks near by!?!? Defin would come back and stay here again!
