My friend and I stayed here Friday night since we had a race in Mission Bay Park on Saturday morning.  She booked it on Expedia.com for $102 including taxes. You can't beat the location near the park, Sea World, and Pacific Beach. It's freeway close, but not too close that it's noisy, and they have free continental breakfast (bread, pastries, cereal, and beverages).  The room is nothing to write home about, but it's perfectly adequate and clean.  We had many cable channels to choose from, and I got to watch my favorite show What Not to Wear on TLC.  Bonus!

this place is terrible, it's definitely not worth the money. We assumed that with a name like the Best Western it would be acceptable, it's not. The room was stuffy, when we turned on the AC it released a smell of vinegar, and unlike previous reviews, the front desk clerk gave me an attitude when I asked her for more towels; she explained that the hotel was completely booked and they ran out. I thought hotels account for that and make sure they have clean towels at all times; which I can maybe understand sometimes it happens; she could've been more polite and courteous enough to say we will have them sent to your room when they become available, but nope, none of that, it was just "no towels, but you can check the pool sir, goodluck".  The comforter was filthy, it had stains so we didn't use it, and the remote didn't work, not that they had much for a channels anyways.

We should've known this place was a s**t hole. When we arrived we saw cop cars circling the parking lot looking for illegal activity, that's never a good sign.

on a lighter note, housekeeping was polite and did provide us with towels the next morning, oh yeah, only after we asked.

I almost forgot to mention that they sent toilet paper and hand towels to the room around midnight, we never asked for it, but they did call our room half an hour later after we told the clerk we never ordered, to make sure it wasn't us, I guess once isn't enough.

I felt compelled to review this hotel based on the high marks of the other two reviews.  My girlfriend and her parents went down to San Diego.  We spent 3 nights at this hotel.  What a horrible place.  Both of our rooms were very stuffy, and there was no way to fix it, because the window only opened about 8 inches.  The bedding felt dirty and was too small to cover the mattress (the sides of the mattress were exposed).  The sink faucet fell off repeatedly which was very annoying.  The worst part is it's impossible to sleep in.  Since all of the rooms face the parking lot, you will be woken up by car engines and screaming children by 8 AM.  If that doesn't wake you up, the rolling carts for the room service will at 9 AM.  The pool and spa are smack dab in the middle of the parking lot, so we didn't use that.  Breakfast had what seemed to be day-old donuts and muffins, cerial, juice and coffee.  After tasting the food, we opted to go out for food.

On a positive note, the front desk staff was nice and helpful.  They called my room shortly after I checked in to see if I needed anything - I was impressed.  However, this was not enough to lift my rating.

I would never stay in this hotel again, and would not recommend anyone stay here.  Although it was cheap, there has got to be a better option.  I wish I had kept my reservation at The Dana...

First of all I did a lot of research before I decided on this Best western on Clairemont Dr. We paid what the four night stay. Like their website says the reservations were to be paid before I could book the room. The money was authorized and then returned to the account 15 days later? And the emailed receipt for my records was not a real receipt? I was confused. And the only answer I got from the guy Jesse at the front desk was that through my frustration I was told "I could go somewhere else". Knowing that San Diego was completely booked I was forced to stay there and take another charge on my bank card. After I was charged again for the 3 night special. I caused a ton of problems because they asked for a bank statement to prove I had paid a month and a half prior. I don't take them on vacation so I had nothing showing payment and had to wait to resolve the issue after I returned with my bank. I have not received my rewards points and I will not ever stay at the Best Western again. Especially one that tells you to go somewhere else when the whole place is booked up for the week. What a disappointment!

    LOVE this hotel!

If you're planning on coming to the Screw your New Year's Resolutions Party (see link below) this coming Friday, January 11th 2008 and need a place to crash, or don't want to drink and drive... get a hotel room here! It's less than 6 miles away, which is a short cab ride! And the best part -
If you mention you're with Yelp - you'll get a discounted rate of $79.00!! Much cheaper than a DUI!

My family and i stayed in the suit for 6 months without being problematic but the moment we woke up to mice eating the food in the cabinet and running across my wife's feet  it was a problem for us and  then when we told them that there were "Mice" in our suit it was our problem. They blamed the problem on the abandoned building next door as if it really mattered to us then the lady asked me if my snake could eat them which made no sense to me. They would not reimburse our family of any funds we spent except for $20 to wash clothes for 4 babies and 4 adults. They actually tried to get us to move back in to the room after they caught 2 mice on a sticky trap without even cleaning the room or properly fixing the whole. We had to make them clean the carpet by explaining how nasty it was for our children to be on the floor with mice feces that is when we were told that we could move to two rooms during the cleaning process which took 1 week without pay but it seemed as if they we're taking to much time so we had to ask them when we could move back in and the manager told us as soon as we pay him for the two rooms that were suppose to be free because of our inconvenience. We payed them and moved but i promised myself i would sue them for the negligence and inconsideration of mt family.  If I could find a lawyer to take this case on consignment i would gladly pay the fees due. I still have the picture of this horrible incident.  Someone Please help us we have 2 cases like this and the other hotel closed down. ( Homestead suites in Clairemont Mesa).

I would normally give this hotel a 3.5 or 4 rating with just basing my rating off the rooms but the amenities and staff were amazing! Jerry and bill were extremely helpful and polite. They actually acted like they enjoyed their job. It was an awesome experience and breakfast was huge and lots of good food. Tons of options. Pool and hot tub were clean. I was nervous upon arrival and wished I had spent more on a nicer looking hotel but this was quit possibly one of the best experiences I've ever had at a hotel.

Upon arriving to the parking lot of the best western I said "Uh oh". The area is not the greatest. It's like motel 6 quality. But there is some good news. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Now to the room. The room was surprisingly very clean. The tv inside is a brand new flat screen tv. Also, the hotel is really close to sea world and not too far from downtown San Diego. Not too bad. Might stay here again. 3.5 stars

I've stayed a lot of nice hotels in the last year (thanks american tax payer), so staying in a Best Western is mildly disappointing. Nevertheless, the rooms were clean and had a mini fridge, which I appreciated.

The bathroom is small, but since I didn't sleep in it, I didn't really care. But again, I tend to compare to places that charge $800 a night, so my standards are high.

The continental breakfast is fine. All in all, no real complaints. The only hang up was that the comforters appeared old and used. And with all those comforter stories you hear, it didn't make me comfortable. I took it off.

    Cons
The sink bathtub and toilet shows signs a plumber needs to be called.
The rug is black with dirt... and I have an toddler
The window is very hard to open my wife couldn't open it and it is outdated.
    No pool
Navy jets fly all day above very loud
Why do I feel poor in this motel
    Walls are thin

    Pros
Employees are normal and easy to work with
Bed is soft and easy to sleep in
Coffee maker, hair dryer, iron board, and fridge in room
    House keeper cleaned my room...
    Wifi works '3 megs download'

Compared to motel 6, you get what you pay for...  should actually be less!

Our rate: 4.5 stars (because of our bathroom issue; see below)

We stayed here for 3 nights last week.  It was surprisingly terrific!  Our room was very clean and comfortable for us and our pooch.  Our beds and pillows were soothing to sleep on, plus new TV with cable channels, free WiFi, frig, microwave, newer furniture and fixtures, updated bathroom and sink/countertop, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron/iron board.

A couple of cons for the room we stayed in (#127): 1) the bathroom door was a little off alignment so it often got stuck and was difficult to open and close; 2) the bathroom light/fan rattled continuously after it was on for two plus minutes, so that was annoying.

As one other reviewer mentioned, wish there was more grass area for our pooch.

The staff at the registration desk was friendly upon check in and out.

The staff in the breakfast room was exceptional.  Jerry and Adriana are so awesome!  They made sure everything was stocked and the guests were finding what they wanted.  They greeted everyone with a smile and their wonderful positive attitude.  We hope their boss will read this (Paul O., gen mgr) because these two deserve special recognition.  Thank you, Jerry and Adriana!

As mentioned in other reviews, the breakfast menu was super!  The main item changed daily.  On our 1st day, we had sausage sandwich and potatoes; 2nd day was breakfast burrito and potatoes; 3rd day was cheese omelette with bacon and sausage.  Other items on the spread: bagels, bread, pastries, croissants, muffins, donuts, waffles, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, juices, coffee, tea, milk and cocoa.

We didn't have a chance to use the pool/jacuzzi nor the exercise room.  Hopefully, next time we will, because we would definitely stay here again.

I wasn't the one paying for the room, it was paid for as I was the band playing at a local festival in the area. I know it came out to $250/night if you account for fees and taxes and whatnot. Keep in mind we stayed there during Comic-Con, and being that it's near the beach it's understandable for the high price. I may say $100 is pretty fair for any other non-peak time though.

The rooms were slightly cramped, but not too bad. The beds were comfortable, and most of the fixtures in the room looked updated. Granite countertops, newer furniture, and a flat-screen were the noticeable features of this room. There are plenty of stairwells, and an elevator to get up to the other floors in the hotel room. Vending machines and ice machines are available towards the center of the hotel, and luckily we got a first floor room that was right near the fitness center and breakfast area.

For anyone who complains about a "free breakfast", it's free...no hotel has to offer breakfast for free. And for what it is, it's actually not that bad of a spread. Cereal, waffles, assorted pastries, coffee, juices, tea, etc etc. It's not a 5 star breakfast, but I'll take it over paying to eat at a place like Denny's.

The fitness center actually impressed me. I was expected a treadmill and a couple free weights. But they have a nice assortment of cardio machines, as well as weights for different muscle groups. So if you're looking to stay in shape on your vacation, you won't be let down!

The staff was very professional, especially when it came to such a busy weekend like Comic-Con weekend. But everyone was nice and courteous, and we managed to check-in without issue. Oh and there is free Wi-Fi, you just need a code to access it, which the hotel staff usually give to you upon checking in. The staff is also very friendly in greeting you when you visit the breakfast room in the morning, or when they're walking from room to room cleaning.

Some people may say this place is in an unsafe part of San Diego, but I say different. I never ran into an incident with others, nor was I ever concerned for my safety.

Overall I give this a 4 stars just because of parking availability. Maybe it was because the hotel was full, but I found myself actually having to park in a lot adjacent to the hotel. It just seems like for the amount of rooms they need to have an equal amount of parking spaces, or only allow one car per room reservation.

I was bone tired from the 7 hour drive and felt like I was in heaven once I laid on the plush, comfy bed. Reservations were made through Expedia and everything went well. Our shepherd chow pup came along with us for only $15 a night and the bay is literally seconds from the hotel. Parking is not too bad-just a extra 20 steps from the front of your hotel door. Housekeeping cleaned our room every day and we stayed for 5 days. Nothing was stolen but we kept our valuables in our car just in case. Good management here as they were helpful and welcoming. One thing I did wish they had was a bigger breakfast area. They had bagels, cereals, burritos, eggs, and juices. Breakfast room was the size of a small hotel room so it was more convenient to eat in our room. There was a discount for our stay so we paid about $75 a night. It was worth spending a lil extra mulah$ than going somewhere dirt cheap and sleeping with one eye open! We'll definitely stay here again.
**Pros:Clean and safe area, comfy bed and pillows, free parking,breakfast(7am-10), wifi, allows dogs, flat screen tv w/ cable ,good customer service
--Cons:Little Grass area for dogs, Crammed front door parking, toilet flush is super loud, weak wifi signal, thin walls

    The pros:
The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful.
The hotel is close to Sea World, the SD Zoo, mission bay, the beaches.
The free breakfast.  The hot food was different every day.  The gentleman that keeps the breakfast stocked throughout the morning is so nice.
The in-room wifi worked constantly and it was pretty fast.
    The price.  Very reasonable rates

    The cons:
The beds are hard as rocks.  Extremely uncomfortable by the 3rd night.
The location.  Seems to me you wouldn't want to go out after dark in this neighborhood.
The rooms are on the small side.
I don't like the "motel" setting where your room door leads to the outside.

I don't think I would stay here again even for the great rates.  We had booked a 4 night stay, but left after 3.  It was our last day in SD and we had planned a trip to Wild Animal Park.  We left the mission bay hotel and found a Best Western in Escondido since it was closer.  Now that was a nice room.

I had a pretty awful experience at this hotel? First, I was staying here as part of a wedding party recently. I had just flown in from Europe. When I gave reception my credit card, there were no problems. The third night of our stay, we returned after the rehearsal dinner around 8 pm to find the hotel had locked us out of our room. Apparently my credit card had been declined. Turns out I forgot to notify them I would be traveling in America. Of course there was nothing I could do about this at 8pm on a Saturday evening. The hotel didn't bother to call us during the day and obviously didn't run my card when I got there on Friday. I could have taken care of the problem immediately if I had known about the problem at the beginning.

Problem number two. The maids at this hotel stole $100 from me. I had hidden the money in the room while I was out at the bachelorette party and came back to find it gone. I guess you could saythis was my dumb mistake fornleaving money in the room, but know people there are not to be trusted.

Final problem. Luckily my mother was in town for the wedding and was able to provide her credit card until Monday morning when I could contact my credit card company to remove the hold. I go to check out Monday morning under the assumption that the hotel had just charged my mother and we would figure the situation out later. Reception told me everything was taken care of. Turns out they provided neither me nor my mother a bill for the stay. I had to call the hotel and deal with them yet again with this problem.

Honestly, this hotel does not have it's act together. Do not stay here if you're looking for a stress free vacation.

Good location - easy to find. I felt safe here.
The breakfast was good - nice selection and hot foods included
    Price was very affordable

Best western... What can I say ??? Good value for the price ! Great location ! Next to mission bay park ! We were there for 11 days with our two kids. The staff was very friendly, the service was good, the room was nice, big and always clean. The breakfast was good too ! There is selection of eggs, fruits, bagels, regular bread, waffles, jam, cheese, sausage, cereals, donuts, yogurts and of course hot and cold drinks. I have to say that the place was full all that time and even when we ask to stay two more nights they didn't let us cause they were fully booked so I think that means something.... We didn't use the pool but our room was just next to it so I know that it was very clean too and always maintain. The parking lot is big and lot of space for big car too. I think the most nicely in this hotel is the fact that it's very very close to the beach! So you can actually walk to there.

We stayed here during December and I have to say that the service and the room was wonderful!! The breakfast area was great with tables to sit down. They offer a good variety of hot breakfast and the ladies who work in the breakfast area are wonderful. I felt welcomed even before I arrived thru a telephone conversation with the person at the lobby to let them know I was arriving early. My husband and my daughters had a great time at the heated pool in the evenings.

For people traveling to San Diego with their fur babies:  We wanted to bring our 2 dogs to the beach for the weekend. Im thinking, ok we are going to get a crappy room because we have dogs. We walked in and the room was very nice, clean, and welcoming. The room included a flat screen TV, good coffee, microwave, fridge, hair dryer, iron, ironing board, and soft water. I was pleasantly surprised with name brand shampoo conditioner and lotion!!!! We will stay here again and recommend it to our friends!

the heater/cooler fan was making a clanking sound and it was quiet loud at night. eventually during first night I turned it off at 4am, and got one of the family member cold.
Also the bed is kinda soft, so if you used to sleeping on a hard bed, this might cause discomfort the next day.
Overall staffs were nice, even gave me a tray to take breakfast up to the room for the sick family member, breakfast changes everyday, but some day is bad, think very dry bean burrito.
Parking gets busy after 7PM, but the secondary parking lot has enough spaces, but the problem is it doesn't have enough lighting at the secondary parking lot, makes it a lot less safe parking your car there.

How much time do you spend in a hotel room? Unless you are looking for resort style accommodations, then this is a perfect pick for a family trip.

    Parking lot:
The parking lot is on the smallish side if you plan to park near the pool area otherwise there is ample parking on the side of the motel, facing Clairemont.

    Check-in:
Upon check-in I was greeted immediately. The front desk was busy with another guest but I did not have to wait long. The gentleman assisting me appeared on the youngish side, so he seemed a little inexperienced however, he was quick and friendly while he checked me in.

    Rooms:
When I entered the room, it appeared fairly standard to my expectations for Best Western. Which is a good thing. I did not notice any unusual amounts of debris or stains anywhere. With this being a pet friendly motel, it appeared rather tidy. The beds were as they should be for the motel. I did not have any issues getting to sleep. The only issue I did notice in the room was the cord for the hair dryer kept falling out.

    Noise level:
We stayed for several days and for the most part, it was a rather quiet stay even with it being so close to the pool. There was the usual kid noise around the pool until 10pm but I could not hear much even with our door facing it.

Probably the noisiest experience I had during our stay was a group of women who showed for breakfast one morning. They were gabbing and cackling so loud for 7am but aside from that it was a very nice to sit and chat with other travelers.

    Continental breakfast:
They serve breakfasts in the morning which start at 7am. The fare was above standard as some places only serve cereal, bagels and fruit. Each morning there was a hot breakfast which usually consisted of a microwaveable item. In addition, they have a waffle machine, yogurt, OJ, apple juice, coffee, sweets, bagels and more.  I am telling you all of this because we did not have to buy breakfast each morning. It was a nice extra.

    Pool:
The pool is on the smaller size however it matches the motel. The distance to attractions was nice. The place is right off the freeway, so it was just minutes to downtown. Plus, if you go east on Clairemont there are many dining options. We found Target, Chipotle and a tasty mexican drive-thru across from the pharmacy ( yelp.com/biz/cotijas-mex… ). Try their breakfast burrito or tacos. They were great.

    Note:
If you have pets, there is a park within 5 minutes walking distance, west of this location. Also, most of the motels in San Diego are older. This is a given. Unless you plan on staying at a super swanky hotel, I have always trusted Best Western.

I would definitely recommend this location for families traveling. We will return.

The staff very helpful specially Anabel and so friendly when we walked in to the cafeteria. The bay is really close just to walk around. There's a grocery store 5 minutes away by car tho. This place was about what I expected. We checked in without a reservation, and it was under $100, but it was a weeknight and in the winter. The room was ok size, had a refrigerator and microwave. Breakfast was included and had options of breakfast burrito, cereal, waffles, fruit, yogurt, and pastries, juices, milk, and coffee. Madison was super nice, but Jesse was a dick. Only thing is that it's not that close to the beach to call itself mission bay, and the "free wifi" didn't work in our room. Jesse suggested we come to the lobby and "plug in" since "that's as good as it gets" in the room.

My friends and I decided to go to the hotel since this was close to San Diego. Might as well give it a try...right? When we got there, the area looks less crowded so that was a relief. Here's the pros and cons:
    Pros:
    1. comfy beds and a TV
    2. Swimming pool and jacuzzi
    3. Free parking :)

Lets start with the pluses.... the location to mission bay is great!  It is right down the road about 1/2 to 1 mile away.  Our room came with a fridge which was nice.  The room was pretty quiet, even though we had a loud family of with a bunch of kids next door, we could only hear them when they were outside the room. The air conditioner also worked really well.  The biggest plus though was that they allow dogs on the first floor!  We had our dog with us so this was great!  The breakfast is also pretty good.

Now the bad...  the area around the hotel is really bleak, no restaurants or anything else that you could really walk to.  The pool is so small that if a fat guy cannon balled into it there would be no water left.  There were about a dozen fruit and regular flies in our room and our neighbors must have thought someone was getting beaten when my girl friend went after them with a balled up magazine!

If you only go to your room to sleep or have a dog with you this place is ok... get out and spend your time at the beach or old town and just come back here to crash.  If you want to relax at the hotel and spend time there, try some place else.

We got a Groupon deal for this hotel for 2 nights. Its in a sketchy part of SD but seemed safe. We chose this because they allow dogs. We stays with our 6 year old Yorkie during a weekend break from L.A. The staff is helpful and the free breakfast in the morning is okay. The breakfast room gets crowded in mornings so you can carry the food back to the room.

I chose this hotel b/c it got me bonus points on my southwest rewards card. Jesse at the front desk was polite, friendly and quick -the perfect hotel check in guy. I went to the room I wasn't too impressed, found a small spider in the tub but ok, found something on the white sheets umm and them the tv didn't work and when I got it to work most of the channels were fuzzy :( now I'm wishing for another hotel. So all in all spend the extra 50 bucks and find another place. Happy traveling.

Edited the next morning. I am bumping my additional star rating from 2 stars to 3 stars. The continental bfast is great. A waffle station, breakfast sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, fruit, good tea. To top it all off the food is decent not just available. And they have a staffer in there who is warm and efficient. Kudos best western.

Great location. Good views from top floor. Fine hotel. Pool is small with two lounge chairs. Room is comfortable but has weird, damp smell. Breakfast is good, but always CROWDED. Watch what you leave on the floor; cleaning staff will take it as garbage. And there were ANTS...lots of ants and we were on the third floor.

Front desk clerk Madison was extremely helpful.

LOVED THIS HOTEL. Very clean. Very good customer service. The room was big(we had 2 queen beds). It was loud on some nights but it didn't bother me. The breakfast was phenomenal. Geez the BEST. They have Waffles,Juices,Yogurts, Coffee,
Tea,Bagel, Pastries,Eggs,Omelets,Sausages, should I keep going... :) The cleaning ladies were super sweet as well. The pool and jacuzzi were clean and good. Also the Wifi worked but not always. What I loved the most was the Mission Bay Park that was like a 7-10 min walk from the hotel. Defiantly gonna recommend this place and I will stay here next time I'm here. :)

This Best Western Mission Bay is about 300 yard walk to Mission Bay Park. I chose this hotel because they are Dog Friendly also. The surrounding neighborhood was safe for me at night walking my Dog.

First impression as I drove up was, it look old and run down. There was some kind of construction going on next to it. The vegetation was not kept up.

The room was what I expected for the price point. The room has an in-wall air-conditioner, desk, television, microwave, mini-fridge, hair dryer, and coffee maker. The down side of the room was that there were no electrical outlets next to the beds to charge cell phones or plug in laptops. Yes, there were plugs on the desk, but who sits at the desk nowadays. The bathroom was clean, bed was clean and lots of pillows. There is free Wi-Fi, but it was slow.

There is a fenced in swimming pool (apprx 4.5 ft deep) and a Jacuzzi. A few chairs and tables. The bad was the lock on the entrance gate. Since I was not instructed on the special way to enter the code. Another guest told me how to enter it for next time. Wish the guy at the front desk would have explained it.

They serve a continental breakfast daily, but on Sunday, they had bacon and sausage. Their typical breakfast was the Waffle station, pastries, fruits, cereal, milk, coffee, juice, yogurt, and breakfast sandwiches.

Some things I want to recommend. Offer customers 'checking-in' a bottle of water like another hotel chain does. Mark (in-room) where the Ice Machine is located. Place those who customers with Pets (Dogs) away from high traffic areas. My dog kept growling and barked a couple of time, because people walking by our room (Stairway and near breakfast room).

Overall, I would stay there again.
