My wife and I just came back from San Diego. We booked through AAA. I was a little disappointed at first as I had no warning that they would be working on the elevators and the water would be cut off between 3:30 PM and 5:00 PM on the 30th, one day in all. Yet, since we were on the 9th floor and could clearly see the bay and city lights, especially at night, I'd stay here again. We watched out the ninth floor slider from the king sized bed that was very comfortable. My wife didn't care for the pillows as they were too soft. It was very romantic! That's my way of saying we had a very good time and she agrees! The pools/spa was so-so but I didn't care since I was not there for a swim. The desk people, the operator, and housekeeping staff were very good, also very helpful. The rates, at this time of the year, were decent at $150 a night plus room tax, and a San Diego assessment fee of $3.00. Parking is only $10.00 a night while many hotels are more.. The "free" continental breakfast was a lot more and nicer than I thought it would be. Eggs, an assortment of cereals, potato wedges, orange juice, and a lot more. If you stay there with kids this is a big plus. The rooms were nice, not too fancy but it's not The Del either. The Metro trains were not too loud and I actually loved them as they blew their whistle/horn at 11:00 PM. They went slowly through the streets and are a hit with me!! Give me a nice hotel, good/spacious rooms, kind and decent staff, and I'll praise you to the top of my lungs. A very good place to stay but I would liked to have been warned about the elevator repair before I decided to stay there. Perhaps, since we booked three weeks in advance they didn't know? Naw, they knew but it didn't matter. The rest made up for the small bit of inconvenience of the elevator repair but since they have two, it was minor. I see a review about the Television and it's true but I don't go 140 miles to a beautiful location, great dining all around, entertainment everywhere, and get upset about the television stations. But, if the TV didn't work, I can understand that.   So many great things are within walking distance too.

I have to say I'm impressed, Best Weezy.

I would think that this particular hotel gets a lot of action from tourists and locals alike. Why locals you ask? Well it just so happens to be very centrally located to a lot of bars in the downtown area and we all know that alcohol most of the time, equals people making bad (and sometimes good) decisions, which necessitates a hotel room. Well, the Best Western might not conjure up images of style and class, but this particular property is pretty impressive. The lobby area is nothing fancy, but it does have some pretty comfy couches. The rooms are clean, and very spacious. The bed linens, which I am usually fundamentally opposed to using, are stylish and the beds are pretty comfortable. Our room had a oversized mini-bar (score) and the entire hotel has free wireless (double score). We also had our own private balcony on the eighth floor with a nice view of downtown and partial view of the bay. I do believe the hotel is going under some sort of renovation but it didn't inconvenience us in any way.

Not bad, not bad at all.

This BW rocked!  We paid $85/night with our corporate discount and asked for a room on a high-floor with a view of the bay.  Boy did they deliver!  10th floor with the beautiful US India docked at the harbor - uplit at night it was an awesome sight from our room and balcony.  We were surprised at how modern and wonderfully apponointed our room was - from the fixtures to the artwork to the flatscreen, it was like everything was brand new.  Bed was crisp and comfy, maid service was excellent and the complimentary breakfast really wasn't as bad as other reviewers complained (we were surprised it included hot food).  We walked to Balboa Park one day and to the Gaslamp area at night and didn't feel threatened by the neighborhood at all.  Sure, you could hear the train, but that was part of the charm, for us.  The front desk staff was extremely accommodating, called us cabs whenever we requested, executed daily wake-up calls and took the time to point out local attractions on a handy map (thanks, Miho!).  We will definitely stay here again when visiting the area and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

My mom and I stayed here one night and were happy with the value.  The hotel was affordable, on the edge of downtown, close to the Port and it was clean.  The lobby is pretty small and the restaurant is a little dated.  Parking was $10 a night which I felt was good and we received a complimentary breakfast which was just okay.  I'd stay again if we need a one nighter or just a clean place to lay my head at night and didn't plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel.  Oh plus there was free wi-fi.

Great place to stay for a nice clean room for a good price if you're looking to spend your time in the Gaslamp District.  The staff was really friendly as well.  I'll definitely go there again next time I need to stay in the area.

It is what it is... a good hotel for the area with a comfortable bed. No fancy frills, nothing special.. but you get your money's worth. Can't complain.  Plus the $10 parking is probably some of the cheapest hotel parking in the area.

First of all, let me just say I'm rating this hotel for what it is - a Best Western. Obviously, there's no way this hotel compares to a Four Seasons or even a Marriott. But for what it is, this is an excellent hotel.

    PROS:
    * Cheap rate
    * Includes free buffet breakfast - not just pastries and cereal, but also included hot foods scrambled eggs, oatmeal and pancakes
    * Free WIFI
    * Rooms have a microwave, refrigerator, & coffee pot
    * Clean, decent sized rooms with the basic amenities
    * Friendly staff
    * Good location - close to convention center, Gas Lamp district, Little Italy

    CONS:
    * It's near the train and you can hear it everytime it goes by (which is fairly often). To be fair, though, you can probably hear the train from all the hotels in this area.
    * There's no elevator to the parking lot -  you have to take the stairs from the street level. Not really a big deal unless you're traveling with people who are unable to climb stairs. If that's the case, you can always temporarily park in the loading zone to load/unload your passengers.

Even though I had seen pretty good reviews of the hotel, I wasn't expecting a whole lot. When we got there, I was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely stay here again.

We've stayed in this place for couple nights when we were in San Diego. I didn't expect much from BW, but this place really surprise me.

    Pros:
    1. Clean room
    2. Very nice breakfast (it is served in a near by restaurant where you can order additional stuff if you want)
    3. Reasonable price
    4. Comfortable bed
    5. Good place (walking distance from downtown)

    Cons:
    1. Parking costs additional 10$
    2. You could hear a train sometimes

I would certainly stay here again!

This place was fine for a Best Western. I think people tend to bash BW's though they generally seem to offer a clean, comfortable environment with all the basic commodities.

I was on the second floor and honestly, there was a weird odor in the hall. Other than that, again, it had everything I needed in a room (except a bottle opener). Bed, nightstand, cable tv and a small balcony. Can't complain, though my prima donna coworkers sure did. Oh, and there was also a fridge in my room which is always a plus.

I found the staff however to be very friendly and helpful. They even let me in their back office to print my boarding pass. Not sure if they should have, I hope I don't get anyone in trouble. I was certainly thankful for their generosity and use of their computer.

Last but certainly NOT least, , , pool and hot tub! Yes, I dipped.

    PROS:
I checked into the Best Western after having to leave The Sofia because of a lack of space and an  uncomfortable bed.
The Best Western had what The Sofia lacked- a really comfortable bed and big rooms.
I was also happy with the fridge and microwave as well as the ample electrical outlets (always hard to find in hotel rooms!)

    CONS:
The neighborhood is rather scary. I was working at The Civic Center and had a ten minute walk through a very scary neighborhood with countless homeless people.
But it was very close to cute dining and shops in Little Italy.

The biggest problem for me was the internet and the front desk staff. The internet was working for my first two nights there (I was there for a week) and whenever I checked with the front desk, they were rude and dismissive. I asked to change rooms many times and was told I couldn't until I finally complained to a manager, who moved me to a room with internet.
Also- Raul, one of the clerks, was HORRIBLE! When we had to go to the airport, we asked him for directions and he told us the wrong way to go (but assured us over and over that he was right) and we ended up getting lost and missing our flight. A total nuisance. And he was the one I dealt with about the internet and told me "There's nothing I can do about it. Call back later". Not impressed.

Also- the entire carpet was stained badly. Really disgusting.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights and had awesome experience after awesome experience! We checked in and were taken to our room - room was very clean and had a great view. Later that night we realized our hot water wasn't working but decided to wait until morning to have the issue addressed. In the morning we told front desk about the problem and they sent up Daniel, a maintenance worker. He took one look at the shower and said he wanted to upgrade our room and would come back with a cart to take our luggage. He came back 10 minutes later, loaded up our stuff for us and took us up to the top floor on the bayside to our new room. View was amazing and the quickness of the service was outstanding. Daniel apologized several times and was nothing but professional. Another great thing was the breakfast. The complimentary breakfast was surprisingly good and large. It also didn't cut off at 9am like so many other hotels do- make you rush to get crappy food. This went until 10am I believe and had sausage, eggs, pancakes, along with all the normal muffins, fruit, cereal, yogurt toast and juice that you would normally expect. The breakfast is served in the restaurant next door. The front desk girls were very friendly and helpful. Had maps available to help with bus/trolley schedules and had suggestions for places to eat in the area. Overall a very good experience and would stay there again.

You get what you pay for with this hotel.

The rooms are clean, and the bed is fairly comfortable. The continental breakfast wasn't bad either. I've had better at most Marriott, Hilton, Hampton, etc.

However, the rooms clearly haven't been remodeled since the place opened, nor has the TV been upgraded.

During our stay, only one elevator was working, because they were "updating the service" of the other one. The note was from the CA inspection board, and based on the sounds made by the elevator that was running, they needed to be replaced.

The parking garage is convenient to have if you need a car, but it is very cramped and the spaces are very small. Two cars cannot go by each other at once, so if there is someone else in there, you have to park in a space and wait for them to go by before you can proceed. Also, since the spaces are so small, beware of door dings!!

Overall, I would probably stay there again, but mainly just for the location, since it is so close to Little Italy.

This particular hotel is my first introduction to the Best Western chain back in 2002.   It is a gorgeous highrise, 14 stories, I stayed on the 12th floor overlooking stunning views of the San Diego bay.

The rooms are large and each one has a private balcony that you can sit out on.   Continental breakfast was included in the stay, they give you a breakfast coupon for the restaurant right next door.  My room had both microwave and refrig.   My friend and I walked the 4 blocks or so to eat at Anthony's Fish Grotto, a very fine restaurant at the water's edge.  I would stay here again,  it was reasonable and very pleasant.

I have been a Best Western devotee ever since, I now have a Best Western GCCI (now known as the REWARDS CARD) for free room upgrades and free nights, I completed the Diamond Elite status for life in 2006 during their 60th anniversary promotion.  I also have a Best Western Mastercard, it's very cool, you earn lots of points every time you use your card whether at a Best Western property or elsewhere.

Nice clean no frills hotel near San Diego Bay, Little Italy, and Gaslamp District at a great rate!

Clean decent size rooms with refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, cable tv, free wifi, desk, chair, couch, foot rest, night stand, comfortable bed, and balcony with a nice view (depending on your room location).  They offer more than many other budget hotels and even nicer hotels. Not many hotels offer refrigerators and microwaves.  What more can you ask for at this price?

The common areas aren't anything special.  The pool and jacuzzi are pretty average.  The lobby offers a few couches to relax and talk while you wait.  The elevators are a bit slow when you are trying to go down to the lobby but I never had to wait to go up.

The parking is $10 per night, which is pretty good compared to other hotels in the area that charge $20 to $30 per night.  There are decent number of spaces but you may have trouble finding a spot late at night on a busy weekend like the 4th of July.

They even offer free complementary breakfast at the Bayside Grill.  The breakfast isn't anything to write about but it is free so can't complain.

It is conveniently located near public transportation.  This is great but not when it also includes the train.  You will definitely notice the train, windows closed or not.  If you don't want to hear the train, stay somewhere else.  Not just a different hotel, a different area.  You will hear it no matter what hotel you stay at in the area.

If you have young kids, I'll advise you to request a 1st or 2nd floor room.  The balconies here aren't safe for kids.  If you can't, just don't let them out.  The door is very tough to slide open so it should be okay as long as you don't leave it open.

I'll definitely recommend this hotel and probably would stay here again.

This is the second time we've stayed at the Best Western Bayside Inn.  Both times we have been very pleased with the friendly service.  The rooms are clean and updated.   There is a microwave, coffee maker and small refrig.

They offer a buffet breakfast thats NOT just cold cereal, but includes eggs, bacon, sausage, hot cereal and juices.  Not bad!

The Motel is centrally located, and there are some very nice restaurants within blocks.

    We'll stay again for sure.

Drunken whores are easier to tolerate when the hotel you're in turns out to be distractingly impressive.

I wasn't expecting anything more than a 2 star motel disguised as a 3 star hotel. When I walked into the lobby, I was surprised to see leather chairs, throw pillows, and friendly staff.

Elevators are a pain and stairs would be faster but I'm a lazy bastard so elevators it was.

The rooms have been remodeled as well and the bedding updated. I was very impressed and felt that it would be worth spending a night, though I didn't.

Came here to meet a colleague who was celebrating his birthday in San Diego. His cousin flew in from Canada and they invited 3 little Orange County party girls to join the festivities. Oh my God. If it wasn't for the comfortable bed that I sat on, this evening would have ended up as a mass murder on Channel 2.

Close to everything and walking distance to many nearby attractions, shopping, and eating. Enjoy the wind tunnels that are the streets of downtown SD and make your way to the sunny Seaport Village.

Thank you Best Western on Ash and Columbia for teaching me that it IS possible to replace zero tolerance with surprise decor. Good job. Keep it up.

Ok I had to think about the rating I was going to give for a while. Even slept on it a few nights. I think I'm satisfied with a solid 3 stars. We were there from March 10th-14th

Pros: GREAT LOCATION!! It is literally walking distance from Little Italy. And a very close drive to the gaslamp district. Which are obviously great locations for dinner and drinks. LOTS OF FUN! Check in was fast and painless. Parking is $10 a night which is a great deal in this area. The room was clean, love the crisp white bedding and the four pillows on each bed. There is a small balcony attached to each room which is nice. The room has a mini fridge and microwave! HUGE bonus. The bathroom was spacious, clean and they even had cotton balls and Q tips stocked!

Cons: Well they have two elevators and one was out of order. Bummer! So of course there was a LONG wait each time we used it, and we only were on the 5th floor. And oh lordie!! On our 2nd night there the only working elevator broke down in the middle of the night and we could hear people dragging their suitcases down the stairs. It was LOUD, annoying and kinda scary. SMH! We woke up that morning and were forced to take the stairs down but no biggie since we were only on the 5th floor and by the time we got back later that day the elevator was fixed. So I guess no harm done to us. But feel sorry for the old couple who hiked up to the 10th floor. Fail!

The breakfast sucked monkey balls. I mean it's free so guess you either take it or you don't. They had hot options (pancakes and eggs) and cold options (cereal, muffins and toast). We had their breakfast the first morning and didn't bother giving it a second chance the next morning. It wasn't gross, it was just blah....like breakfast you eat from a school cafeteria. It's very much edible, just not something I would subject myself to while on vacation. It's probably perfect if you have children to feed and you're on a budget.

All in all. It was worth the $110/night compared to the other places in the area, and you can't beat the location. I would probably stay there again....um or maybe not...idk.

Best Western is my go- to  for consistency and price. 3 stars because it really is A-OK. This hotel was in a great location.   We were in rm 1209 and had a view of the bay and the Star of India (Ooooooo...). Stayed for  3 nights in February for about $160 per night.  Walk 5 minutes up India street and you're in Little Italy,  Walk 10 mins down Ash and you're at the water. From there you can walk to the U.S.S. Midway (great if you love aircraft carriers and history) or continue down another 15 mins and you'll be in Seaport village. There are a number of homeless folk along the way...
And a block down Ash is a RiteAid. Balboa/ Zoo is a short drive away.

Our room for 4 was a double queen.  It was clean and ok sized.  2 beds, small dining table, no sofa. But no questionable bed spreads, just clean white sheets with an easy to remove decorative throw. A small balcony was a plus. Clean, spacious bathrooms (meaning you could freely open the door without any maneuvering). For the noise sensitive, there is a train that runs nearby and some street noise, but nothing that kept us up.

The staff was nice, no issues there.  There is room service and their restaurant/dining room is outside the hotel lobby.  Their "restaurant"/bar is usually deserted and has minimal staffing. If you must eat at the hotel, get room service -the menu is the same but you won't feel awkward being the only lonely diners in the whole place. The food was not horrible, but soup of the day was Cream of Onion. Hmmm..  Clearly it is intended mainly for the complimentary breakfast which consisted of the standards- cereals, eggs, pastry, oatmeal, apples, oranges...
If you're not in a rush, go up to Little Italy for pastry at Mimmos or a french crepe- so worth it.

Finally, their parking structure is small($10/nite). You may run into trouble if you encounter another SUV going in the opposite direction. If you have a SUV, park at the top. And it's stairs only from the structure to the hotel lobby.

I really liked this hotel. I am rating it a 5-- not because it's a 5 star hotel-- but I could not really ask for more and it so exceeded my expecations. We got a great deal on the room rate thanks to a handy-dandy little app called Hotel Tonight (do you guys know about this? It rocks) and the room was only $75 for that night's offer. I had never stayed in Little Italy before, either. Parking cheap, only $10 a night.
This Best Western is pretty amazing... it is a hotel, unlike some BW's that are pretty much motels or Motor Inns.  It is very close to the harbor and cruise ship terminals, along with its proximity to Little Italy. It offers a pool and jacuzzi, free breakfast, and they do have room service (although, check the hours).  They have in room hair dryers, coffee, and what I personally loved... cotton ball and Q-Tip canisters in the bathroom.  YES!  Thank you BW, for realizing that some of us cannot live without our Q-Tips!  They also offer free complimentary stuff you may have forgotten, like a comb, or toothpaste/toothbrush. Nice! Now you have no excuse for morning breath.
The bathroom also had a combo tub/shower with some of the hottest water ever, which I really appreciated after a long day fishing in the wind.  The beds were also super comfortable (as I have found in other BW's) and the heater also rocked.
Thank you for a super comfy room.  As another reviewer noted, there is no elevator in the parking structure. I personally like the 1970-80s/rounded glass architecture, too.  Great place to stay.

Basic, bare minimum hotel. The selling point of this Best Western is its close proximity to Little Italy and the Gas Lamp District. Seriously a 5-10 minute walk to either areas..so awesome. The hotel rooms itself are nothing special but have all the things you need, no extra frills. Our room came with a small outdoor balcony, which we didn't use. The parking here was around $14 a night, which is not bad considering the prices other hotels charge. The free continental breakfast was a nice touch and we went once during our stay here. The food is nothing special but it's free! One BIG plus for me was the free wi-fi. I don't remember ever staying at a hotel that had free wi-fi..they always charge around $20 a night.

Negatives: Be aware that the hotel walls are very thin - I could hear the drunk people next door talking and screaming throughout the night and morning. The water in the shower goes from hot to cold periodically. I noticed two small stains on our sheets.

If you're looking for a fairly inexpensive hotel to stay at (~150 a night) with an amazing location, choose this Best Western.

My bf and I had a really nice stay at Best Western. Check-in was fast and easy. Although the room was a little small, it was very clean. It had a microwave and refrigerator and both worked properly. We didn't have the greatest view but it didn't really matter.

The bed was EXTREMELY comfortable, such a pleasant stay!

However, there were a couple of problems.
    1. The "cold" water from the sink wasn't cold at all. In fact, it was HOT.
    2. Someone apparently set an alarm we weren't aware of. We were startled by Carly Rae Jepsen's annoying song blasting at 7:00am. Yay.

Overall, it's a great place to stay. It's close to the Gaslamp which is a huge plus. Complementary breakfast was okay, not bad. I recommend! =)

I am going to rate this place 3.5 stars because everything was great except the water took a long time to get cold in the shower and also at the faucet.

The bed was super comforatable as were the pillows.  The room came with a microwave and a decent sized fridge.

There was a small balcony which was nice and had a view of the water.

A great pool and hot tub and I thought it was cool that there was a vending machine for beer!!

The continental breakfast did not disapoint.  It was a buffet style and there were scrambled eggs,  pancakes (really yummy), cereal, cottage cheese, yogurt, sausage, ham, oatmeal, apples and oranges, coffee, tea and orange juice.  On the last morning, there were these really delicious home fries.

Great location.  Not too far from the gaslight district, shuttles, little italy and seaport village.  All in walking distance.

    The staff was wonderful.

First time staying at this BW. The hotel overall is very nice and clean as seen in the photos of their website. Nice views from the rooms and conveniently located right next door to Little Italy. We'll start off with 5 stars.

Beware when parking in the multiplex parking garage, there is no elevator. You either have to roll your luggage around the parking lot the way you came in, or carry it down stairs. Now we're at 4.5 stars.

The fan in the bathroom would not shut off. I called the front desk and they sent someone to look at it. They then said they would send facilities up to shut it off manually. No one ever showed up and the fan ran all night. I ended up closing the bathroom door to shut out the noise from the fan.  Now we're at 4 stars.

Went to order room service (food) only to discover that the hotel restaurant is closed on Saturday's and Sunday's. Apparently if the restaurant is closed that means no room service either. Closed on Saturday and Sunday? Now we are at 3.5 stars.

Because you can't give 3.5 stars on Yelp, they get a 4 because I do like the place and is well worth they're rates. Added some night time photos to their Yelp.

Decided to take a local vacation and chose this hotel as the value seemed to be good. It was and was also much more than expected. The room was large, clean, very clean, and the bed was NOT worn out. The air conditioning was quiet [how nice is that], and the staff was helpful. All in all a nice city hotel conveniently located close to everything and priced on Hotel Tonight as a value.

This hotel is nice, great location, great views & easy walking to all over downtown.  The hotel has a pool & Jacuzzi which is outside & in the pool area they have a soda machine as well as a beer & wine machine which is nice.  Hotel has free wi-fi & rooms have recycle bins along with their trash bins & that I really liked as I will normally take my recyclables home...I just cannot throw away recyclable items.  Rooms have flat screen TVs & the typical movie ordering service & I didn't check to see if they had HDMI hookups to connect your computer to watch movies of your own.  The hotel offer free breakfast which is nice & it's not your typical continental breakfast as there is a restaurant next door which has a breakfast buffet & you are given vouchers for it.  They have eggs, pancakes or hash browns & then a meat like ham or sausage but they also offer toast, cereal, juices, coffee, Danish, fruit, oatmeal & the like.  If you don't like what they are offering you can also order off the menu (you have to pay) but the buffet was sufficient & worked well for us...it runs until 9:30 which was good because it forced us to get up & get our day started & having the free breakfast really saved us a lot of money in the long run.

Now, for the issues with the hotel...the door walls to the balconies need to be resealed or need better noise reduction drapes or something because the constant planes, trains, trolleys & what not make so much damn noise that it was hard to sleep.  The train tracks are about a block away & trains run non-stop 24/7 so it can be quite annoying listening to the bells on the gates & then the horn on the train or the bell on the trolley.  The airport is very close & from our balcony (we had a bay view room & the view was wonderful) so we were constantly watching planes fly right by & of course they were noisy as well but noise is expected when you are sitting out on the balcony just not when everything is all closed up.
The hotel offers free shuttle service to & from the airport which is nice but on our way out they shuttle guy was very backed up so the hotel called us a cab & paid for it.  I believe they also offer discount tickets to various sights but we didn't get any through them so you would have to double check with the hotel.  Back to the restaurant, they are closed all day but reopen at 5 & have a large dinner menu which you can also order room service from & the room service prices include the extra delivery fee already but if you don't want to pay the extra couple bucks you can walk over & get carry out.  Their prices are very reasonable...we had a philly steak & fries & it was only $10 & quite a large serving of food.

My last complaint is the cleaning staff are very loud in the hallways in the mornings & aren't considerate of those sleeping...they are talking & banging every door & it's rather obnoxious...especially when you have your "do not disturb" sign on, that usually indicates that people would appreciate quiet & they should respect that.

Hotel has computer for flight check in as well so overall I really liked the hotel & would definitely stay here again.  Bring ear plugs!

I noticed that a lot of people complained about the water not getting cold  but I didn't notice that problem.  Then again, if I wanted really cold water I used ice & since we had a fridge I kept water in there as well.

This is a reasonably-priced hotel within walking distance (1 mile) of the San Diego Convention Center.  It's clean, with standard rooms that are fairly spacious.  The bathrooms are also clean, although need a little updating.  There are good LCD televisions in the rooms, a desk and strong, free wi-fi - perfect for a business traveller.  The pool is fairly small, but clean.

On the downside, there isn't any gym on-site - they will give you a free pass and a shuttle to an off-site private gym.  Also, it's not quite in the heart of the Gaslamp District, and the streets are pretty deserted at night.  I didn't feel unsafe, but most people would want to take a taxi back to the hotel at night.

Stayed a night with my family, and we enjoyed it! We had a bayside view room, and my son loved watching the train & trolley pass by! he was easily entertained! Check-in was quick (15 min. or so) and the room was nice and fresh when we entered. The continental breakfast was good and decent. The only negative of this place is the parking! $14 a night (a star deduction)...it should be complimentary (i think) Will definitely stay here again in the future! great location for a good price!

This is really one of the best value's in San Diego.  Perfectly located in downtown right by Little Italy, walking distance to the Midway ship as well as pretty much everything else.  Staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are great and the free breakfasts are too.   Only negatives were the elevators took a while to arrive to my floor.    I've traveled my whole life and this is one solid value!  Really can't go wrong!

So I booked this place on hotel tonight and figured since it's a good location I would survive at "The Best Western" for a night. The hotel and rooms were surprisingly really nice with great views.

They offer room service and they have a nice pool and hot tub area with a beer and wine vending machine. Our stay with a complementary breakfast  and well the food wasn't great but, it was free.

Great location however the rooms were plain and simple, depending on the day, there was no cold water, which is better than no hot water? Parking not too bad for $14 a night. Room service is available as well as restaurant, the free breakfast ..... Meh. If the room was $90 a night then no doubt 4 stars but at $179.... Not so much. But if you can grab a sweet deal for less than $100, I would recommend it.

This hotel had complimentary Airport Shuttle!  Came for birthday 2011!  Check in very fast!  Stayed nine nights/ten days, Wednesday to Wednesday, two more, so to Friday!  Handicapped Room was on sixth floor!  Easily walkable to Balboa Park!  Aunt Shirley from a nearby town, every so often she took me places!  One night, she purchased Japanese food, we ate in the room!  I like the jacuzzi, the hot water does wonders to sooth the weak leg after a day of walking, exploring different places!  Most the staff people here are Asian, that quite comfortable for me!

Cheaper than Sheraton!  I prefer Starwood Hotels, as told Po Po, "This cheaper," she ask how much Sheraton, I say $225.00 (before tax), she ask what this price, I say $130.00 (before tax)! Hey a saving of ninety five dollars night, not bad!

Let me write a review for my friend who visited SD from overseas. She called for a shuttle service and it took them about an hour to come pick her up. Her room key was broken or had some issues and she had to go down to the front 3 times till it finally worked after 10 hr flight.

WiFi didn't work at the lobby.

I couched my lungs out as the room reeked of smoke. It was like being in a coal mine. The front desk wouldn't let me switch rooms.

Read my other reviews. I am not a negative person and rarely give out one-star reviews.

The room really was that bad. Enter at your own risk.

Nice hotel. My only complaints are that they don't have a Starbucks in this facility, ice machine isn't on the 5th floor, and the balcony wasnt safe enough for me to fuck my girlfriend on. Overall all it was ok.

My wife and I were in San Diego and we needed a couple of nights to stay in San Diego.

The hotel is a few blocks within everything you want, the harbor is about 3 blocks down, Little Italy and their awesome restaurants are about 4 blocks away.

We took a 7 mile walk every morning around the harbor and we came back to a "Free" breakfast that had wonderful eggs, hash browns, Korean soup if you wanted, lots of juices and cereals. All good stuff.

The rooms were clean and we had no complaints. The prices were reasonable and they picked us up from the airport. All great stuff.

They also have free Wi-fi! awesome plus!

They even had a beer vending machine if you wanted it by the pool!

We would defiantly be back here on A San Diego trip in the future!

Easy garage access. The spaces are good sizes where an SUV can fit nicely. 14.00 per night was not bad to other garages.
Check in was easy and pleasant. The two ladies at the front desk were very nice. It was maybe a few minutes and then we were off to our room.
The room is a good size. Clean, the bed comfortable. The pillows not so much. Too soft. My only complaint about the room was the water. No cold water to speak of.
The location is great. It was great being that close to Little Italy.
    The prices are reasonable.
    I would stay here again.

In a good SD mood, so I'm rounding up.

    Pros:
Location, clean rooms/balcony, and 10th floor view of the ocean.

Access to a local classy gym -- steam room and sauna, and wonderful roof top pool.

    Cons:
My room card only worked once each time and I had to go to the lobby for a new one 6 times.

Room service - tasteless chicken enchiladas were made with too much cheddar cheese.

I'd maybe come again for the gym/sauna access if others were booked.

The hotel is clean and the front desk staff was nice.  We were watching a Jason Mraz concert at the Civic Theater which is walking distance.

This hotel is also walking distance to the Maritime Museum and other cool things to do around the marina.

The hotel itself is a bit dated, it is not a 4 star hotel, but it is nice, clean and cheap.  Our room was on the second floor overlooking only the pool, and concrete so that was lame.  Also I believe parking is $14 which they will charge to the card upon checkout.

You also get a free breakfast at the restaurant next door which is nothing to write home about, but free.  They had pancakes and ham, no bacon:(  Lots of pastries, eggs, juice the standard, but free.

Overall for a nights stay, I didn't mind, but its not the Mariott Marquis.

Great place. Best bang for the buck. We had a 5 star view of the bay and star of India.
Clean, good customer service and a great location in Little Italy.

Easy 3 min walk to trolley and buses.
1 mile walk to gas lamp district or take the trolley. The Trolley also goes to Old Town.

Enjoy your stay in the cleanest city I have been in. They mop the sidewalk.

Great stay at Best Western Plus. The check in staff were nice and helpful. We had a nice Bayview room on the 11th floor. The only reason why I'm giving this room a 4 star is due to the stained carpet and smelly bathtub. Other than that, everything was great. They serve a buffet complimentary breakfast next door which was delicious. The hotel is about a mile walk from gas lamp and 2 blocks from the bay. Thank you Best Western for a comfortable San Diego stay.

We were down here for a conference for 4 days and I gotta say I liked a lot of things about this hotel:
#1: LOCATION! It's in the heart of the downtown and literally a block from Little Italy, two blocks from the train station and two blocks from the ocean. Definitely can't beat that!
#2. The rooms! VERY fresh and clean! Super comfy beds and pillows
#3. View: If you happen to have a poolside room 4th floor and up you will have a beautiful view of the marina :)]
#4: The breakfast! and I am talking about a FULL breakfast with hot eggs, hams, pancakes and toast. Not some kind of cheap continental breakfast

The ONLY drawback (which of course is not the fault to the hotel itself) is the proximity to the train tracks and the airport so it can get pretty noisy. Love the balconies, great size rooms and everything else! Will definitely be back here next time, Prices are also worthwhile.

"This is it?!... this is a small room... but man this bed is freaken comfortable... when did you want to go out an....zzZZZzz"

    Pros:
Somewhat walking distance from every downtown/gaslamp bar/restaurant or even the harbor attractions.
    Beds were really comfortable.
View was pretty good, with a few buildings in the way, but the view has one of the harbors with boats passing by.
Yay for free breakfast... not amazing, but still free food is always good to me.

    Cons:
    Small lobby area.
Small pool (but why swim in the pool when you can be out in the beach?)
Not that decorated/visually stunning inside the building.
Pay for parking per day. $14/night, but it was better than other garages/private lots in downtown.

Overall: You get what you pay for, above average service, decent to above average room, decent free breakfast (that's always a plus for me), and away from the busy areas of San Diego Downtown, but close enough to get to those places. Had a lot of good rest time from the food coma I built up from the downtown restaurants and farmer's market.

Would I use this place again... most likely cause of the cost and the location. Not too far away from the heart of downtown, but far enough away from the noise and the busy areas.

Staying in a hotel for the first time in San Diego, I decided to look for one in the Downtown San Diego/Gaslamp Quarter/Little Italy areas as there are numerous options.

Having done my research, I started bidding on Priceline and won a bid for the Best Western for about $120 a night during the Labor Day weekend. A pretty good deal given the cost of hotel rooms on a holiday weekend in this area and San Diego in general.

The location is excellent as it is on W Ash St near the epicenter of Little Italy. The Little Italy Trolley station is just a block or two away. And the Santa Fe Train Depot is also within short walking distance so it is excellent if you are using public transportation instead of driving a car in town.

The hotel exterior is nothing fancy. In fact, it looks pretty ugly with its tan color as it makes the building look dated. The hotel lobby is fairly sizable. There is a sitting area in front of the elevators. You can sit there at your leisure and use the hotel's free Wi-Fi (password not required).

While the exterior seems a bit old, the rooms are nice and modern. The hotel is 14 stories tall and given the location, many rooms have a nice view of the harbor. Unfortunately, my room was not as it was on the 5th floor so it had mostly a view of the parking garage. Though you can see a little view of the water in the distance. If a view is important to you, try to get a high level room here.

My hotel room was spacious. It had a large TV and a mini fridge too. Even a microwave! On top of the microwave is your typical selection of coffee and Lipton's Tea bags. Bath toiletries were of some Swiss brand which are a little better than what is usually provided. Bed was comfortable with a number of different types of pillows.

As for hotel amenities, there is a swimming pool and spa. But no fitness room. Due to the short distance, Best Western is one of the few hotels that offers free shuttle service to and from the airport. Call the hotel and wait at the shuttle area outside the airport to be picked up. The shuttle I took was actually a minivan so it can't accommodate too many people at once. Plan accordingly.

There is also a free breakfast buffet for hotel guests at the hotel's restaurant, Bayside Bar & Grill. The front desk staff will give you meal vouchers to present. The restaurant is actually in another building on the corner. The food was alright. Standard fare. I will write more about it in another review specifically for the restaurant.

While the offerings here would typically merit a 4 star, I had a couple issues. The biggest one is that when I opened up the toilet cover I found unflushed feces. It makes you wondering how the cleaning staff could miss something like that. The room also could have used a few more electrical outlets. I had a hard time finding an unused plug so I could recharge my phone and tablet.

If you are looking for a hotel with a great location, I would recommend Best Western. It isn't very stylish. But if you are more about value and staying somewhere comfortable, this hotel offers that.
