I had many issues with this venue but I have to say the most irritating was that of the food quantity and quality. I relied on the hotel to tell me how much food i would need, yet we ran out of food half way through our guests. My stations were not manned as they were supposed to be and I was told the food was cold! The employee who was in charge of helping me refused to recognize what I wanted and kept calling my wedding a cocktail party! It made me nuts that he just didn't understand that although I wanted to serve cocktail type foods, I did not want a cocktail party! After the wedding, I sent a 4 page letter to the manager of the hotel explaining all of my issues, concerns, and complaints. Although in the end I was refunded some of my money, I was told by a response letter that the food issues were my own fault and my guests must have just ate too much!!!! There are so many beautiful venues to get married at and this is one of them. However, I would not recommend this venue based solely on the food and the response to my complaint.

i don't think i've stayed at a best western before, and i was a bit apprehensive, but this place was totally cute.  definitely not as motely as i thought it was going to be, with pretty spacious, clean and well appointed rooms.  staff was also very friendly, especially the lady bartender.  we stayed here for a weekend to attend a wedding.  the dinner served during the reception (duet of salmon and steak) was quite good.  i can't quite give it 4 stars, but it's near there.

While searching for the perfect venue for our wedding reception, we came across the Island Palms Hotel and Marina on Shelter Island.  Compared to other wedding venues recommended by San Diego Style Weddings magazine, the Island Palms gave us a five-star reception for half the price we would expect for the level of service and quality we received from catering manager/wedding specialist, Rachael Wilkerson, and the entire resort staff.  The food was superb and abundant.  We selected the "Wild Orchid" wedding package, which not only was perfect for our low-budget wedding, but provided us with all of the essentials included in the package, including our wedding cake, centerpieces, one hour open bar and a full appetizer and double-plated entrée dinner.  They even gave each table two bottles of wine and a glass of champagne for the toast.  However, even though the hotel does not overcharge, they never let us down as far as quality of the product.  Our entrée was delicious, as were our appetizers and the wedding cake, from Flour Power.  We really appreciated that Island Palms contracts with one of the best wedding cake bakeries in San Diego, and a small business with a personal touch, Pt. Loma Florist for customizing our table décor.  We highly recommend the Island Palms for any event, not just a wedding reception, requiring a banquet setting because they treat their clients with respect and bend over backwards to ensure that your event is a seemingly effortless success!

I just got back from San Diego this morning and my stay there was fantastic. The Island Palms Hotel helped make my weekend comfortable. The hotel is great for friends who just want a place to put their stuff in and sleep. The room we got was in the A section room 102. A card key is used to access the room (which is on the ground level next to a Pepsi vending machine). There was two queen size beds and a table in between. Right across the two beds was another table and two arm chairs alongside it. To the left was the bathroom (big counter top but small shower). To switch on the light in the bathroom, you have to turn the circle thingie to the right and it shuts off itself so you have to keep turning it. There was also a mirror closet by the bed. There was a ceiling fan (not loud). However, the exhaust in the bathroom is pretty loud so if you're sensitive to sounds when trying to sleep, you might want to look for another room. If you walk out of your hotel room, you might want to turn left because there, you will find a lot of boats and yachts with mountains as backgrounds. It is beautiful! There is also a pool and a jacuzzi. There is a bar (this, I cannot review because I didn't go in there). Around that general area, you'll find a lot of seafood restaurants and yacht rentals. There's also a park right in front of the hotel. The service is pretty decent (they change the sheets). They do serve food but it's like around $9 for breakfast and $24 for a dinner meal and if you are ordering food from them, you have to leave the order sheet before 2 A.M. on your door knob. The decor is, well, water-tropical with a palm tree lamp shade and paintings of tropical flowers by the beds. There is a TV and a game system (I don't know what kind). The room was around $260 per person per night. I gave it a three because the bathroom exhaust was a disturbance and the lights went off in our room for about 5 minutes (although they sent someone to fix it quickly).

i like the best western because the rooms (queen suite) are kind of like a small apartment i wish it was closer the beach but the pool is very nice.  Over all i give it a 4 stars. =)

Stayed here during Comic-Con.  If you are just looking for a place to crash this place might be ok.  If you are looking for anything more you might try elsewhere.  The facility is old and not well kept.  The amenities are few and the ones they do have are not very well maintained.  Multiple vending machines, same items, different prices.  The hotel staff is polite but the maid service is not very good.  The standard rooms with 2 double beds are quite small.  Very noisy.  Not much, if any, insulation from adjacent rooms.  The hotel restaurant is decent but inconsistent.  If you order English muffins sometimes you will get 2 and sometimes you will get 1 same for the toast.  If you order orange juice you could get a big glass or a small glass both for the same price.

This is one of my favorite hotels!  It has fantastic service and clean rooms, plus the rooms open up to beautiful views of the garden and the marina.  It's within walking distance to places like Bali Hai, so there's never a shortage of things to do.

Good sized rooms and clean.  The front desk staff was very nice.

The room service stinks.  The service is from the over priced restaurant in the lobby.  We called for lunch for our kids (they gave a 35 min eta) and after and hour we called looking for our meal and they said they had no record of an order.

We gave them one more try that evening for desert.  We actually recieved it this time, and paid cash at about 8PM.  At 11:15 that night they woke up all of us calling to ask how we had paid the room service.  Lucky for them my nice wife answered.

I couldn't be there at checkout, so I called a week ago today to speak with the manager, was transfered to voicemail and never got a call back.

I just got back from two nights at the Island Palms hotel.  I was a bit disappointed on arrival as it looked completely different from the main picture on the website.  Old and rustic and a little run down from the outside.  However, the desk staff were welcoming, accommodating and helpful. We asked for, and got, an upgrade to a suite over looking the marina for  $30 a night and the room was very comfortable indeed with full kitchen and separate lounge with sleeper couch. Bathroom was fresh and clean with lots of towels.
However, it was right next to the cleaning staff closets and the ice machine so it was pretty noisy.  When we were leaving I said the the room was pretty unremarkable and the desk clerk immediately refunded the upgrade money I had paid and hoped fervently that we would give them another chance.  This was a very pleasant surprise.
Location is perfect for visiting all the city and parking is easy and convenient.  Make sure you select a room with a view!
Note: Customer service at this hotel is really impressive.  They responded to my post with genuine interest and concern.  I will definitely try this hotel again now!

Oh, Island Palms how you disappoint me. My buddy was getting  married at the Island Palm Hotel so my wife and I decided to get a room there so we would not have to drive home. Which they gave to us for $99.00 for a group rate since we here with a wedding party. So everything stated off great. Well....thats were it all fell apart. The day of the wedding my wife called the hotel to see if we could check in early since check in time was real close to the start of the wedding time. Also due to me being  in the wedding we needed to check early so I could get ready before the wedding. The guy who answered the phone  very rudely told my wife that there was no way were were going to be able to check in early but when he transferred her  to front desk. They were like sure come on down it is ready right now. So we got there and checked  in. When we got to our room I should have known we were in trouble. when I unlocked the door and a was jammed. I had push a it real hard for it to open   When we made our reservations asked for  a marina view room. yeah it was on the Marina side but all you could see from the room was a bunch off bushes. The bathroom in our room was horrible. The lighting sucked. The shower was dark. It was like taking a shower in a marble cave. The paint below the sink and on the inside of the door was peeling off.  Also there was a section on the floor were the tiles were real hot. A broken hot water pipe maybe? Thank God the wedding when off without a hitch and we only payed $99.00 for this room. If you are looking for place to stay in San Diego for a vacation or if your local just looking for a place to get away for the weekend. I think that you could find a better place to stay than the Island Palms Hotel.

i recently went on a mini vacay to San Diego and this is where I stayed with my husband and 7 month old baby. We chose it because it advertised rooms with a marina/harbor view. We arrived at 11:00am but check in was not until 3:00pm. We decided to try and check in anyway and they surprisingly had rooms ready and we were able to settle down sooner. We had a beautiful view that we all enjoyed. Baby and I enjoyed the boats and naval helicopters that came by. There was a fishing dock and small playground directly across the street from us and a great walking path that led along the marina. The room was pretty standard but large enough to set up baby playpen and still have lots of walking room. It was very clean and had everything we needed. Overall a nice place to get  away.

This is my favorite hotel in San Diego...we don't stay anywhere else.  Besides the beautiful grounds, the renovated rooms, the ridiculously comfortable beds, the FREE wifi and parking, the kid friendly everything, and the amazing location this place has the best customer service I've ever seen at a hotel.  I can't say enough about the hotel and we can't wait to go back...we won't ever stay anywhere else in San Diego.  And, by the way, if you have kids the best suites around!

I am absolutely thrilled with everything at the Best Western Island of Palms.  From the minute we walked in, all the staff here treated us with the utmost respect and courtesy.  From the guys at the front desk, the cleaning staff, and the people in the Blue Wave restaraunt.  I cannot say enough about how professional, friendly and courteous that they were.  We paid for a marina view and when we arrived, they upgraded us to a suite overlooking the bay.  The suite is absolutely beautiful.  Two flat screen tvs (bedroom and living room), sofa, open concept full kitchen with fridge and stove.  Coffee maker in room, and balcony overlooking the bay.  It was in the older part of the complex but exceptionally maintained, and I cannot say a bad thing about the room at all. My newlywed wife was thrilled to say the least, as was I.  It was much better than expected.  The location is fantastic, as you can go for long walks along the bay in the morning.  It is close to everything, and easy to get into downtown or wherever you want to go.  We wanted to take a trolley tour, and just missed the Old Town Trolley, and would have wait another 40 mins.  The staff at the front desk saw that we were disappointed, and immediately offered to drive us to Old Town.  I told them that we would wait, but they insisted that it was no problem, and took us on the shuttle to Old Town.  It was something they just didn't have to do.  Even the waitstaff in the Blue Wave restaraunt was top notch and went out of their way to make you feel comfortable and at home.  I highly recommend eating at the hotel restaraunt if you do stay here.  The food and service are both comparable, if not better than any restaurant in San Diego.  We were pleasantly surprised.  Pool and jacuzzi are clean also.   Well worth the money, and we hate to leave here to go on to our next destination.   Thank you Best Western!!  We will be back again, I guarantee it!

Two years, too different...Last year stayed in grand view room...quiet, beautiful...booked the same room for this year...but when we got there it was taken...had a similar room...only one available...took it...right next to the pool, play, bar area...not at all quiet. Island Palms failed to do what so  many other establishments we frequent do gladly...honor our request for a  return visit to a previously booked room. Also, initially no hot water...got fixed...light to bathroom not working...it got fixed. Also, seemed like mold in the shower, and the patio had old bowls on the grass. Too many failed expectations.

Not as central a location as other hotels would be but nice relaxing setting.  Marina on one side and bay on the other.  We had room on the 3rd floor overlooking the bay and downtown San Diego.  Next time I would get a room overlooking the marina.  Garbage truck set off someone's car alarm in the morning all 3 days we were there.

Difficult to really rate then entire place since there are different rooms in different buildings of varying ages from very old to brand new. I've stayed here many times since it is convenient to my needs in the Shelter Island area. This time I stated in an older building suite. The room had been updated but you could still tell that the building was old and warn. Still reminds you of a warn down "cheap" hotel. The staff at the hotel is excellent. Friendly and accommodating. I only had one real complaint with the room, and that was that the a/c unit is not nearly sufficient in size or ability to cool such a large space. It was unusually cool and the thing still couldn't keep the room cool during the day. I received a response from mgt regarding this issue and apparently they are working on correcting the issue by adding another unit or installing a larger one. One must ask, "What took so long?" I'm sure all Summer this room is a "hotbox" and others must have complained.

The landscaping on the grounds is very nice and the groundskeepers should be proud. It really makes the property look nice. The cleanliness overall is only average as I frequently saw trash on the ground as well as towels and such.

It's apparent that the pricing of the hotel varies based on the rates charged by it's competitors in the area. Usually, I'd rate the hotel as expensive for what they provide, but there are "specials" offered when the price is more reasonable. The housekeeping staff did a better than average job in the rooms and overall I can recommend the hotel.

Another minor drawback is the condition of the main pool area. I used the pool a couple of days in the later afternoon/evening and each time there was lots of trash, empty beer cans and towels all over the pool area. Also, only a couple of the jets in the jacuzzi work!

Again, I can recommend the place as I will most likely stay there again in the future.  Simply put, it's not the best place in the area but it is far from the worst!!

Went to San Diego this weekend and was pleasantly surprised with this hotel.  The staff were efficient and helpful.  The room was large and clean with a lovely harbor view.  The location was close to everything, Shelter Island is a great place to relax and get away. I will stay here again when visiting San Diego.

Me and the wife decided that we needed a weekend escape and what better time then during San Diego's restaraunt week. We are local residents so we thought we had pretty decent knowledge of where the fine hotels are and where the roach motels are. I made same-day reservations for under $110  a night. We went to check in before going to dinner and the staff was very freindly and professional.
We were given a room on the 1st floor with a view of the bay that was obstructed by the parking lot which was literaly 2 steps outside of our door. We entered the room and it was nicely decorated and modern. But no sooner had we put our bags down then we noticed this strange odor in the room. My wife thought it was cigarette smoke. I thought it was a damp, moldy, dirty carpet smell. Whatever it was I knew we would not be able to tolerate that smell all night. I went back to the lobby and asked the concierge to give us a different room; one without a smell and preferrably upstairs. He said the only thing available was a double-bed room on the 2nd story of their new building. The room cost more but he gave us a free upgrade since it was not our fault the room stunk. When we arrived to our new room we were much more pleased. It was clean, no smell, and had a pleasant view of the marina from the balcony. It had a nice big 42inch HDTV and a very nice bathroom. Everything was near-perfect until we laid in the beds. The beds were rock-hard. My wife did some investigating and found out that the beds were actually air-mattresses that you have to adjust the softness. Well we both tried different settings to get the right feel but it didint make a difference. I tossed and turned all night because i kept feeling like i was sleeping on cardboard.  Both me and my wife woke up rubbing our lower backs in the morning vowing never again. Sorry but as great as the staff is and despite the cool location i cant recommend this hotel to anyone who expects a clean room and a goodnight's sleep.

Definitely a treat!!! My best friend and I stayed here the night before her wedding. We had a suite large enough to accommodate the 9 bridesmaids that came in the morning to get hair and make-up done.  Our room had a full kitchen and livingroom and a patio with a grass lawn that was basically on the marina.  Somewhat secluded which was really nice considering all the chaos throughout the weekend!  Our suite was only about $200 a night, very reasonable compared to what other surrounding hotels were trying to charge for that weekend.  Decor was modern but still warm and not outdated.  I will definitely recommend and book again!

I ventured off to San Diego for a recruiting fair at USD.  This was one of the hotels on the list that was a little less expensive than the other options.

I arrived at about midnight on a Thursday night.  I checked in -- cute lobby and it looked safe... there was some construction on the road at the time. My room was clean, the shower was fine.  Meets the Best Western standard... almost made me feel like I was in Hawaii again.

Decent hotel. For the price in San Diego, seems like a deal.

At check-in the staff was courteous, helpful, and friendly and things only got better from there...

The location is fantastic. Shelter Island is convenient to downtown/Gaslamp, Point Loma, and main thoroughfares and freeways. Plus, it offers great views! We stayed in one of the hotel's new buildings and our room overlooked the beautiful Kona Marina and Point Loma homes in the distance. Standing on the terrace taking in the salt water was such a great way to start the day!

Our room was brand new, so it was fabulously fresh and nice with a large flat screen TV, comfortable beds and sheets, and a spacious bathroom. I've stayed in many nice resort hotels in the Loews and W chains and this room certainly rivaled those, it felt like a 4, maybe even 4 1/2 star room. I didn't look inside any of the rooms in the older parts of the hotel, but from the outside, they looked to be nice.

The hotel is laid out like a resort with a number of out-buildings, tennis courts, a lounge, a nice fitness facility, walking paths, and two pools. One of the pools is quieter and smaller and was used by mostly adults and the other pool was more lively and was frequented by families and those who wanted to order drinks poolside. We tried both pools, both were heated, sparkling clean, and the pool areas were nicely laid out. I prefered the quieter, smaller pool, since I enjoy sunning and don't have kids. One of the few (and I had hardly any) complaints about my stay was that a couple of times kids were running around the smaller pool, which was normally very quiet, and I had wished they'd head over to the more family friendly pool. Perhaps the Island Palms would consider making the smaller pool an 18 and over spot and the larger pool all ages? Also, the hottubs were quite crowded at night. Understandable for a busy, sought after hotel, but adding additional hottubs or larger ones might be a good investment for the future.

We enjoyed the free parking and never had difficulty finding a space. Hotel staff let us know that sometimes parking is tight at night, but that even in that case, the port owned parking lots across the street are free and open for overnight parking. Perfect ,since renting a car is a must if you want to see many parts of San Diego during your stay, it's not really a public transit accessible city.

We ate at some nearby fish houses and greasy spoon breakfast joints, it was great, definitely felt there is a Shelter Island sense of community combining weekend boaters and those who work in the boat trades. We also ate lunch at the hotel restaurant and had drinks and appetizers at the lounge. The service and quality were good but not outstanding. The convenience was fantastic. I believe a continental breakfast was offered to guests as well, but we didn't take advantage.

As I said, our room was very comfortable, but the walls were not particularly thick. One morning we were awoken by loud people at the marina and in the hotel hallway. It was spring break at many schools the week we stayed, so maybe that accounted for some of the activity? It was, however, very quiet at night, we were able to sleep soundly. We were also very impressed by the security presence. We frequently saw friendly and courteous (but not imposing) security guards walking the grounds, so I'm confident that if there had been excessive night time noise, the problem would have been dealt with.

In terms of activities, it's wonderful that Shelter Island is convenient to a number of San Diego tourist attractions (at least by car), but there were also activities right there on the island. The beach park run by the port authority had sculptures and other public works of art, historic markers, a great view of Coronado Island, and good sitting beaches and picnic areas. There was a local arts market on Saturday and Sunday as well. The hotel offered free beach cruiser rentals, which we didn't have time to take advantage of, but they  would have been great for exploring the island. We did see the beach cruises however, and they were brand new, high-end bicycles.

For the sake of writing a fully comprehensive review, one of the hotel vending machines did eat our money, but minus that kind of minutae and the couple other small items I mentioned above, it was darn close to a perfect stay! All that for incredibily reasonable rates!

We were certainly impressed and would recommend this hotel to anyone--couples, singles, kids, old, young, you name it, this place has wide appeal.

Thank you Island Palms management and staff!

I have stayed here before in a "standard" room, and thought it was OK. This time we spent the extra money and stayed in a queen suite. What a difference a little space makes! If you travel with children and have the need to prepare meals while on the go (like a bowl of cereal, or heat up a cup of cocoa), then you will enjoy a suite at this hotel. It was very clean and comfortable. Every room was large. The bathroom had ample room for multiple people to shower and get ready (no tub). The bedroom had a closet in addition to several dresser drawers. The "living" area had a large flat screen TV, couch and coffee table. The kitchen had glasses, mugs, plates, silverware, a full sized coffee maker (though no filters), a pantry, and a full sized refrigerator. These amenities were especially useful given that it was raining outside which meant we spent more time in the hotel room than usual. There's children's play set across the street next to the water.

As an aside, if you want to stock up the pantry, your closest grocery stores are off Rosecrans and Womble. There's a Trader Joe's and a Vons. If you go to that complex, do yourself a favor and have a meal at the Tender Greens restaurant. It's freshly prepared daily specials are fast, delicious, and healthy.

The restaurant attached to the hotel has a great vibe and view, but the food is so-so.

The queen suite we stayed in did have a latch up high enough so that the toddler couldn't open the door. We were grateful for that latch since she did try to open the door herself several times.

I would absolutely stay here again.

Me and my family stayed the first week of march. We read a lot of reviews and this place did not disappoint.  We stayed in the new building on the top floor and had a great view of the Marina. Room service was good and the road the hotel is located on is real quiet and there is a park and a pier right across the street.  Danny at the front desk was very helpful and I would definitely bring my family back for a relaxing vacation.

This hotel used to get 5 stars from me until one incident. I've stayed here numerous times and do love the view from both the front and back of the hotel (the marina is my favorite). The rooms have always been clean and the staff has always been friendly. One day, the cleaning staff walked in on my ex and I (the top latch was locked, the bottom wasn't). There was a Do Not Disturb sign on the door, they didn't knock, AND we weren't due to check out for 2 more days, the man just opened the door and tried to walk in. They comped ONE night. I won't be going back, as much as I love the location. Not until I'm assured that their staff will be better trained at doing their jobs. It's funny looking back, but that really could be a liability for the hotel.

Kudos to the staff. They made this place jump onto my "return" list. Very friendly and helpful.

Great views, and not far away from downtown, this is right off the harbor and smack in the middle of the boat yards. Boat dock is in walking distance, and very nice private area that is not on any main roads. Parking is free, and I got a good deal off hotels.com for a couple of days. Suite was a free upgrade, so it was extremely comfortable with the inclusion of a couch, two large screen TV's, refrigerator and stovetop. Would have liked a bathtub over the shower, but the twin sinks were nice had my wife joined me on this business trip. In the evenings, it's nice just to walk along the bay and see the city across it. One night, the fireworks were really nice to see. Interior was a bit of "Island Hut" style... but comfortable and clean.

Bottom Line: I'll be back as long as the rates stay the same.

Had a very pleasant experience staying at this hotel last weekend.  I have been to San Diego multiple times but had never stayed in this area. The hotel was wonderful, from the kind staff to the room and grounds; loved walking along the harbor.  And  everything was within a short driving distance away.  I stayed in Building B, standard King room - the room has a large flat screen TV, mini fridge and microwave, free wi-fi and parking - there's even a little patio area out front with chairs and a table.  If the weather had cooperated, I would have enjoyed sitting outside overlooking the marina. There is also a restaurant and bar on site - good food and excellent service. Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed here over the weekend with my friend and boyfriend.....Lets start off by saying, very accomodating staff.
For the price, it's a great place. Got to the room late friday night and I noticed the toliet didn't really flush. Not such a big deal!! I didn't feel like dealing with it that night, so the next day I called the front desk and the maintenance guy showed up and took care of it. They are totally on top of things here. Next day my friend and I are gone all day and when we get back the room keys DO NOT work. At this point i'm sort of annoyed because it's raining, i'm hungry and I have to use the bathroom. We run to the front desk and I was telling the guy that sooooo many things have happened ever since we got here and now it's really inconvenient. He offered to change rooms in the newer building called Marina. OMG, it was totally nice. Located on the 3rd floor with the marina view, it also had a balcony. Soooo. much better and the upgrade was free. The staff is super, super friendly. I would definitely stay here again with no doubt. It is like 3 miles from the gaslamp district.

We spent a night for a little getaway to celebrate our 10 yr wedding anniversary. The staff was very friendly and super helpful. We received a free upgrade to a suite after checking in to our Facebook as advertised on their fb page. The view was really nice and the room so comfortable and it had a nice beach house/resort feel. We really liked the peace and tranquility of the night...we slept better than we had in a long time. The ducks were a little noisy early but that was okay. The only disappointment was the bar/lounge; we weren't really impressed. Overall it met our expectations and it was so nice to relax at a beautiful location. We would definitely stay here again!

I've stayed at many best westerns but this is one of my favorite ones. Took my lady here for her birthday. We stayed at a king size room on the second floor with a nice porch and had a good view of the ocean and down town San Diego.  The room was a little out dated but the surroundings, porch, amenities made up for it.  The room was in a secluded area, our car parked below our porch/room, so I knew it was safe.  The rooms are key locked, you have to open a separate lobby door to get to your room.  The pool was very nice, it was heated, had a nice view of the boats and old town San Diego, there was also a fire place you can use which was nice.  There's a small pier across the street and they offer bikes for you to use, so that was nice, my lady and I took a nice walk during the nite and biked around in the morning.  Stayed here for two nights, staff was friendly and helpful, paid bout $150-160 a night which was well worth it. Would come back here again. Only downside walls are thin, so you can hear your neighbor next door and some electric sockets didn't work for some reason, they should also add a fridge like most best westerns have nowadays.

we've stayed her on 2 different occasions..
each time we've appreciated:
*friendly, helpful staff.
*clean, large, comfy rooms.
(those beds are outstanding!)
*pool/spa areas are clean and not too busy usually.
*close enough to the city & zoo, but w/o the chaos.
*marina views are worth every penny, but great views no matter where you stay in the hotel really.
*complimentary bike rentals!
*great local places to grab a bite to eat within biking distance.

the 2nd spa wasn't too hot this last time, but not worth dropping a star for.

we love this hotel & plan on returning many times!

We've stayed here a few times and have continued to return because of the beautiful views, friendly staff, and inviting rooms. If you stay here, request a room on the marina side, in their newest building, which is an entire level or two above their other accommodations. I strongly suggest the marina side because it is hands down a better view, and is especially gorgeous at night when the houses on the hillside and boats are lit up. It is also quieter, and does not face parking. I will say that one of the nights we stayed there was ruined by a group of loud, abnoxious, drunken men who had their RV parked in the front of the property--this will not happen on the marina side. Check in early, especially on weekends and event times, incase you want to switch rooms. We had to check in late one of the stays because of traffic, and were pleasantly surprised to get a larger upgraded room, but I think they had forgotten the tub that needed to be reglazed. I went to the desk to have our room changed, but by then all the rooms were booked. They salvaged my rating by giving us another upgrade with a beautiful room the next morning that was everything we wanted and again, the staff was friendly, prompt, and courteous. They even moved all our luggage for us and had the new room ready by the time we finished our outing.

This place is very chill.  It's like a little bungalo tucked away next to the coast.  The suites have a great kitchenette for cooking your own food.  i think we housed two families of about 7 or 8 people total in one room!  Can't go wrong with this place.

kind of confusing that the hotel has 2 totally different looks/styles. stayed in the tropical bambooish side last october.

Had a Standard King sized room. Nice that we were staying on the corner of the one leveled area. There was a mini fridge & microwave in our room. The bathroom was pretty nice. Although the shower didn't have a light in there & it was kind of  dark. The tiled floors felt heated. I don't know if I enjoyed it or not. Once checking into our room, our TV didn't work. Had to call maintenance to check it out & they came within 10 minutes to fix the problem.  Overall it was a good stay!

Originally stayed here for a wedding & was quoted a group rate. But once we got our bill, I was charged regular price. I immediately went to the front desk before checking out. & showed proof of the e-mail that I was supposed to be charged a certain price. They were very apologetic and fixed the problem.

Booked a great overnight package on their website for about $200 which included 2 tickets to Sea World.

On flying in early Saturday morning, they had our room ready at 9am for an early check-in and our Sea World tickets ready to go. We also had a gorgeous room overlooking the water, complete with patio for a late night vino and cigar.

The hotel has a gym, pool and spa and the rooms are clean, modern and very comfortable. It appears to have had a recent overhaul and I'd happily stay there again!

This is the first time I stayed here and I'm not impressed! First of all when the reservations were made it was made for 5 adults and 1 child. Which they said they could accommadate. Walked into the room and there were 2 full size beds and 2 chairs and a kitchen table. Another draw back this morning in the bathroom was little tiny worms on the floor. Called front desk and they replyed with "you got bugs?" .. the front desk clerk were not too bright. About an hour later they sent a maintenence guy to spray but later on there were still a few worms. Don't think I'll ever stay here again. Gross!!!

I was really impressed by this place.  This isn't your typical hotel because all the rooms are spread out over a few different buildings.  This might seem like an inconvenience, but it actually adds to the "resort" feel of it.

My boyfriend and I arrived before the check-in time and they didn't have a room available, so they asked us to come back later.  This wasn't a problem because we were starving for lunch.  We came back a couple hours later and our room was still unavailable.  The man at the front desk apologized and upgraded our room for free!  We got a view of the water and yachts.  Plus, since our room was in the corner of the building, we had large windows on two walls.  No free breakfast here, but the location is great and there are tons of nearby restaurants/eateries.  Considering location, room quality and service, the price of this place is unbeatable.  I will be staying here whenever I'm in San Diego again.

Alot more than what we expected for the price.
Great location.
The view is amazing with a little bit of imagination, you feel like you're in europe. There is a beautiful view of the harbor and the hills.
Late night, you can see the beautiful lights of downtown san diego.
They carry alot of toiletries for your trip just in case you forget any shampoo, conditioner, soap. If you need more towels or pillows, room service is very quick. They have a hair dryer and iron. Major plus for free wifi.

Parking is not that great. Pool closes pretty early...10 pm. The worst thing was that our room was not ready until 4 pm... Yet we still had to check out before 12. For that reason, I would take away half a star.

Stayed at this hotel for a conference and found it to be sub-par for the price we paid per night. First, the shuttle service from the airport to the hotel took 45 mins to pick me up, which made me late for the conference. Things happen, was willing to let this go if it were not for the other hiccups during our stay. These included: the lock for our room not working, the ceiling fan stopping by itself and the lights in the bathroom repeatedly shutting off on their own. This especially sucks when you're in the middle of showering. The hotel did address the lock issue by replacing the lock and did fix the ceiling fan after an uncomfortable night. The light issue they claimed was due to a. 'Motion sensor'. However this was never resolved and had to live with it through tout the three nights of our stay. The room was in the older side of the hotel and it seemed as though they neglected this side while still charging a premium price. Loved the marina access and most of the support staff were friendly...but would not likely stay here for any subsequent San Diego trip due to the sub-par room experience.

Had a business Holiday Party here.

Absolutely loved the service. They did everything I asked and more.

We had our own dinner party room with a downstairs room vacant for our use. We all got great deals on hotel rooms, but I was more focused on the dinner party.

I really can't think of anything else to say, but a great place to have a large company party. All my co-workers were very pleased. I will be planning next year's party here again.

The wait staff were on time and helpful. The bartender was great with his heavy hand and was grins all night.

I've been here for a little more than two weeks, in the Casa side. My room is awesome! The bed is ultra clean and comfortable, the chair at the desk is also comfortable, and the bathroom is huge, I have a great view of the pool area, and the entrance is about 10 feet away from my rooms back door. The only qualm I have with this room is that there is no microwave, and with staying here for sooo long sometimes you just want to nuke some leftovers or even a hot pocket instead of eating out.
As for locations...awesome! I myself enjoy Ocean Beach and this spot is centrally located to where I have to work and where I like to play. The ladies that clean my room are great. I don't have it cleaned everyday, but if I happen to run into them they always offer more towels or coffee, and ask if I need anything. They are great. They are also the only ones I've had dealings with that make me feel welcome here.

Soo, room is nice, location is nice. Why only 4 stars...the room key...that damn room key. I came back from work, hot, tired, and covered in grease only to find my key card would not let me in...fine, ok. So I made the long treck down to the front office and asked the lady at the front desk to fix my key. I've never felt so un-welcomed before and maybe it was the shock of seeing a grubby lady in her snooty hotel. Whatever the case maybe she attempted to fix my original key card and instructed me to keep it away from my cell phone as it could be the cause as to why the card didn't work. Well, I knew my key card hadn't been near my phone, but whatever. I got my key and walked back to the Casa side...only to find I STILL COULD NOT GET IN! Now I was super angry, I walked back and told the lady at the front desk it still didn't work and that I wanted a new key card, again she "fixed" the original...she also asked how long I was to be staying here...till August 26th I told her but with the way things were going with the damn key card I didn't know if I would continue my stay.  I eventually was able to get into my room, my key works when it wants to, usually after getting put in the slot a good dozen times and a few choice swear words. A couple days ago I again couldn't get in my room but this time I called the front desk and they sent someone down with new keys.
So minus 1/2 star for snooty front desk lady and 1/2 star for crappy room key.

Where do I begin??
Let's start with a very long drive south from the Sacramento area to find paradise on a little island in San Diego. WOW! From booking our stay to leaving the hotel we encountered nothing but courteous & friendly employees. Special kudos to Shaun, the reservation lead at the hotel for hooking us up with a stupendous room! We arrived VERY early..check in is at 4 and we arrived at noon to find us checked in less than 10 mins later. Wow! I could understand maybe an hour earlier, but four hours? We were very happy campers already. Shaun booked us into a Queen suite in the Casa Del Mar building on the second floor. The room was oh so spacious, super clean, a stocked kitchen and views to die for. Without a doubt we lucked out. It didn't matter if it was the cup of joe in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening that was being enjoyed, we were doing so on the balcony of our hotel room while watching the Navy fly over head, the fishermen/women across the street or folks passing by walking their dogs. There are two sides, marina and bay views. Although alot of reviewers favor the marina side, I preferred the bay side we were on because there was more to watch. I hardly noticed the parking lot (maybe because it was empty 3 of the four days we were there because it was being paved). Didn't mind that a bit!
The beds are the most comfortable that I've ever slept in, including the one at home (which will get replaced very soon). Down pillows and comforter, crisp high quality sheets and an oversupply of towels left one less call to housekeeping. Our only request was additional coffee for the in room maker which we received pronto. Although we didn't experience room service or the hotel restaurant we heard enough buzz to ensure we do just that on our next trip. And there will be one..and we WILL stay at the Island Palms. Hopefully we'll be lucky enough to get the same room.
Honestly folks, my review doesn't do it justice. When booking, ask for the Casa Del Mar building and you won't be disappointed. Again, special thanks to Shaun for making our stay a very memorable one. See you next time!
Oh..and the FREE, yes I said FREE parking is just another bonus!!

Searched for Hotels in the San Diego area. Read reviews on different websites. I decided on the BW Island Palms as it is flanked by the Marina on the back side and the San Diego Harbor on the front, and since my passion is fishing, this place was heaven.

As I was checking in, I was hoping to get the new section, as the many reviews on-line talked down about the old section. When I was given a two queen bed room in the new section, I was stoked. The room faced the marina and was on the first floor. The patio opened to the walkway along the marina, and if you are a people watcher, this was the location. The room was spacious with the two queen beds, the desk, large flat screen TV on a cabinet with a small refrigerator. The building was next to the covered parking which also held the two tennis courts. There is a restaurant and bar, called the 'Blue Wave'. The restaurant and bar are not big, but plenty of room when I was there.

There are two outdoor pool areas with Jacuzzis with plenty of chairs and towels available. The walkway along the marina was great to stroll in the evening with a drink passing along the two other hotels. Across the street was another walkway along the bay, as you can watch people having picnics, bonfires, onlookers, fisherman's on the pier and the awesome San Diego skyline.

I will stay here again because they have 'Free' WiFi, and that's a plus for me.

Great location, rooms and service!  San Diego's best kept secret. The idyllic location is so much better then any other hotel. Easy access from airport, don't have to wait in lobby, or for your car. Great staff from front desk to restsurant. Restaurant was a huge surprise. Like 5 star dining. Great view and the food was superb and yet reasonably priced.  My friends all had steaks and could not believe how great they were.  Fabulous waitstaff.  Pools were great. Our junior suite was beautifully appointed.  All in all a great experience.  Will definately go back!

Before I say anything else, I want to say that the staff at this place is phenomenal. This is an incredibly friendly staff and they offer some really great customer service. Kudos and high fives to you.

Now, with that said, this was my and my husband's first trip to San Diego and we decided to come out for my birthday. We shopped around online and thought this hotel offered the best stuff for the price. Well, not so much.

First, we paid for a marina view, when it turns out our room was kind of tucked away and we ended up with an obstructed marina view. Definitely not worth the upgrade price there.

Then, there were no lights in the shower. So it sort of felt like we were showering in a cave.

Next, our room was definitely in the older part of the complex and, while there were a few upgrades, the overall look was old and dingy. And not old in a "quaint"-like way. Plus, there WAS a smell to the place but it mostly just smelled like ocean/sea water/fish, which I mean, we're on the marina so I don't know how I could complain about that.

But, from looking at the place online and then experiencing it in person, we were definitely disappointed.

As mentioned, the staff is great, though, and I hate to be so negative considering how great these guys are. Plus, it is pretty close to a ton of things so location is great. Bottom line, though, it's definitely lacking.

I'm fussy about my hotels and this one met my standards very nicely. We booked through Alaska Airlines vacation and actually received the separate bedroom set up that I sought out as we were traveling with a 3rd adult. The hotel is older but tastefully remodeled with a nicely updated bathroom, and full kitchen (except no oven, just stovetop and microwave - whoops - couldn't bake that frozen pizza we bought! :)

The beds were comfy. The restaurant, not super fancy but very convenient, nice view, and affordable for lunch and dinner with good happy hour dinner prices until 7pm. The free breakfast passes were only used once. Breakfast options boring and over-medium eggs were runny and otherwise uninspired. The breakfast menu could really use a lot of work. Otherwise I recommend the restaurant.

The view of the marina was a fantastic surprise. Most hotels charge high rates for the few rooms with views and I always seem to be looking at a wall or an alley. The way the hotel is situated on the narrow Shelter Island, you get views on both sides of the hotel. It looked like there are some interior rooms that probably only have peek a boo views, but ours had a nice private patio with table & chairs and view of the gorgeous marina.

There is also a great flat walking path that runs all the way around the small island, making it GREAT for walkers and runners. Very safe feeling and convenient for walkers of all ages. A nice way to start or end your day in the beautiful San Diego weather.

Very close to the airport, and very convenient to downtown. Free parking. No elevators, so if you have issues with stairs, request a ground floor room. It's only a two-story place so that shouldn't be an issue.

In-room coffee pot, and supplies. I suggest they upgrade to real coffee mugs instead of tiny tea cups and disposable styrofoam go cups - save the world and give us more comfort please! Also, how about sugar packets so we don't have to use up an entire condiment set every time we need one sugar. Also, recommend salt/pepper, cork screw (we donated the one we had to buy to our room), cheese grater, a real knife for slicing, and a real spatula. Our room had plastic serving spoons, but no actual spatula so our teflon pan was scratched up from prior guests using forks. I also need to remember to bring some ziplocks and such when staying in a place with a condo but plastic bags did the trick. Otherwise the kitchen was well stocked but the above items would make useful additions.

I would return and definitely recommend it. The Hotel Del it's not, but for the price it was a very pleasant surprise.

I just came back from a boot camp and so glad that it was held at Island Palms.

Great place for business conferences, near the airport, surrounded with great venues and good amenities.  No need to get a rental, great place to exercise, good restaurant, and excellent for boot camp activities.

I am very impressed and happy with their efficient staff and service.  Shuttle was on time and driver was helpful and courteous.  Front desk quickly checked us in with whatever information entered in the internet.

At the seminar, time is of the essence, restaurant personnel fully understood our time constraints and would take our orders and deliver to our conference room.  What a service!

Venue is right on the marina so during breaks or individual group meetings, we met outside the conference room.  It was quiet, fresh, and meditative.  Great place to reflect and review lessons-learned.

Restaurant food was always hot and fresh.  Enjoyed dinners with great wine, superb clam chowder, shrimp bisque, fresh calamari and salmon grilled to perfection!  Ceasar salad was great too.  Can improve on dessert selection ... but since I really can go without, it was good ... :)

This place would have gotten 5 stars if it is somewhat remodeled.   Wear and tear of the facility is beginning to show but overall, price is really of excellent value!

So, I booked a king room at the Casa Del Mar building here for our 4th wedding anniversary.  When I went to check-in, I asked for any upgrades and they moved us to a king junior suite with a nice view of downtown.  Wow.  That was awesome!  The room itself was spacious, clean, cozy.... we loved it.  I'm just sayin'.

They have two pools.  The pool at the main building is bigger, but both look just as inviting on a nice, warm San Diego day.  They also offer free bicycles so you can ride around Shelter Island.  We didn't get any, but probably should have.  Blue Wave is their restaurant on property and was delish.  We only ate their breakfast though, so I can't speak for other meals.

We'll go back again next time we head down to SD for a weekend or so.

Overall this was a great place to stay. The room was great and was very comfortable.  We stayed in the Casa Marina building facing the bay, which we were told was the newer section of the hotel. The hotel is across the bay from a Naval base, so if you're looking for a super quiet environment, you wont get it here. Naval helicopters and fighter jets flew by several times - they didn't bother us because we think they're cool to see, but again, they're not quiet machines. Another very cool thing was naval battle ships and cargo ships regularly sailed by in the bay - those were quiet. Again, we thought those were awesome!
A few things we did not like: Parking wasn't great. On our end by Casa Marina, the parking lot was always full when we returned in the evening. You are allowed to park in the lot across the street, but its annoying.
They have 2 pools and spas. The main one by the lobby was usually pretty active, so we didn't frequent that one. The other pool/spa closer to our building was pretty nice. It has tables, loungers, a fireplace, ample towels and plays music during the day! (80s music, my fave!!) For some reason, the bathroom door wouldn't stay open on its own, which was also annoying to have to find something strong enough to prop open the heavy door.  The TV was a nice flat screen, but was slow to respond to the remote and its default volume was LOUD.
The issues we had with this place were minor, and we would absolutely stay here again. The staff was helpful and very nice. I can't wait to go back quite honestly.

We stayed at the Best Western Island Palms on Shelter Island and I have to say, we'll be staying there again. The lobby was beautiful with a nice water fountain and greenery. The staff was very nice and it was easy to check in. Our room was next to the pool and had a view of the marina. It was a king size bed and was very clean. They are a very family friendly hotel. The Sunday that we were there, they had a movie night in the pool area, showing "Horton Hears a Who." It was fun floating in the pool watching the movie.

So I booked this hotel through the San Diego Zoo's website! It was great (minus the construction at 8am, thank goodness I was still on east coast time) I did mention the construction issue at checkout and they gave me a card for 15% off next time I came to visit. I def will!!!

The hotel is cute, I stayed in the Island Palms Mediterranean room with my friend whom I was traveling with. It was good, the layout was kinda off when you tried to open the door to the patio there was an armchair in the way...

Clean, parking is good,

Overall, it was a pleasant stay.

Here's what worked well:

- room was clean

- staff was very nice and attentive (thank you Danny at the front desk and thank you room service for helping right away when, after checking out, I realized I left an item in the room).

Room for improvement:

- the cardio equipment in the fitness center is not maintained well and some of it is literally falling apart.

- I an unimpressive burger and fries meal delivered to my room.

This my favorite place to stay in San Diego. I spend a night here about every two weeks. Consistently friendly helpful staff, great views, great location, good food, nice bar, nice pools and jacuzzis.  What's not to like? Let's face it, there are a ton of hotels in San Diego. I drive about 15 minutes out of my way to stay here. There's a Holiday Inn one block from my office in Mission Valley but it's consistently $30-$50 more than the Island Palms and has views of, uhm, Interstate 15.

This hotel has grown over the years by purchasing neighboring properties. The main (oldest) part is a series of interconnected bungalows. Most rooms are smallish but charming. This part of the hotel also included some of the largest rooms. Many have kitchens and a few (Villas) are two story with spiral staircases to the bedroom.

The two newest buildings (in order) are Casa Del Mar and Casa de Marina. Both are full of large rooms with big flat screens and porches or balconies.

Just a hint for reservations-Marina view means just that. Waterview means either a partially obstructed marina view or a view of the bay across the street.

Shelter Island is also a great spot for a walk or a jog and feels safe day and night.

Restaurant is also good and has fair prices for both breakfast and dinner. Bar is pretty well stocked and fun when it's busy. Almost always someone on a sailing adventure from the marina to chat with.

"Its another beautiful day at the Best Western Island Palms.". Give them a call-you'll get it.

Awesome area to stay while visiting San Diego. Peaceful and relatively quite. No noise or parking problem that are associated with any hotel in downtown.
I liked ability to walk early morning hours on the shore. Beautiful view and safe due to the presence of the island police.
There is plenty of free parking. Free wi-fi is also a big plus as other hotels are charging for both parking and hotel.
We stayed in the room with a marina view which is much better than opposite ocean view which overlooking parking lot and the street.
We stayed in 1 bdrm suite on the second floor and though I like room amenities, I don't like the fact that we couldn't open any window. Staying by the ocean, I would rather enjoy at night a fresh breeze from the ocean then a noise of the A/C.
The only other annoyance were seagulls. Those big birds were constantly stumping on the roof at night and it echoed through the high celling roofs like in the concert hall. I would recommend to make better sound isolation for the roof.
Room was cleaned daily and it pleasure to stay in that place. Next time I will go to San Diego I will try their other building Casa Del Mar which looks a bit better.

I was the best man of my bff when he got married and they chose this hotel. The hotel and the view are awesome!! no doubt about it. The room that i stayed in was huge for one person. But here is the thing, when the time I was checked in there, the card key doesnt seem to work properly. The night of the wedding, i decided to go out with friends and when i tried to get in, the card was not working. I called the reception and they were very helpful and replaced the card key ( 1st time ) . When I went outside to get some ice , i tried to get in again and the card key that was given to me was not working again.. ( 2nd time ). I called the desk and they will replace the key. They had to bring someone to give me the card key, I was told that they key slot was kinda jacked up.. the next morning, i went to the pool to relax, knowing that the card key is working .. again, when i tried to get in the 3rd time, the new key that was given the night before was apparently not working at all. good thing the house keeper was there to open the door for me.

Great overall stay. I stayed here during December 2011 and it was great. The rooms are clean and well furnished. Not that you book a room for the TV size, but the LG flat screens are the biggest I've seen in a hotel.  The rooms are not that well insulated and during the freezing week that I was there, I had to constantly crank the old school wall heater/AC that was in the room.  When the light hits your door, you can see there is no weather stripping at all! Not bad during San Diego's usual 70 degree weather. Not so good when it dips to the low 40's at night.

I enjoyed the patio and chairs. I had a marina view room and it was nice to sit back and drink a beer with my colleagues while watching the boats lit up with Christmas lights.

The bedspreads are white, the sheets are white, the pillows are white. Need I say more?

The front desk staff is anywhere from helpful to very helpful depending upon whom you get.  Their reservation system must be outdated because it couldn't break apart the three rooms I reserved for myself and my two business partners. That meant an extra amount of time at check out. The clerk had to re-enter each person's name and address on the bill so we could each get reimbursed. Not a deal breaker, but a hassle.

The bar is overpriced.

The wi-fi is weak near the back of the hotel and at the extreme ends.

The location is great. It's very quiet. You do hear some of the airport traffic and there's always the Coronado naval aircraft traffic. Again, once you're in your room, it's very quiet. Yeah, it's a bit dated, but you can't really beat the location and price compared to what you'd pay downtown. Free parking tops it off.

Five stars for every single aspect of this hotel which is really more a resort. We were in the newest building and the decor was beautiful. The beds were fantastic...not only the linens but also they were adjustable in firmness like a Select Comfort but better! The room and bath (we had double queens) were really large and the flat-screen TV great.

Best was the view, the quiet AND the salt-water swimming pool and spa.

I've stayed in a lot of Best Westerns and this is the best of them all, so far.

If you stay there be sure to eat at Pomodoro's, a little italian place right around the corner in a tiny house. Great food and ambience for really good prices. House chianti is excellent.

I had my wedding here and stayed here this past weekend. First the Pro's: The location is nice, the staff is too. Many of the things they promised and set up were correct and went smoothly. The food is VERY GOOD!!! The ease of an all in one location was very nice. There was plenty of parking. The manager, Chris, did everything he could to work out the issues that came up.

Now for the Cons: The staff is very unorganized and failed to follow through on instruction. It seemed as if the right hand knew not what it or the left hand was to be doing. I was called away from preparing for the wedding to correct issues for my guests at several different times even after i gave the hotel meticulous written instruction as to every aspect of the wedding reception.

The Room: We stayed in a suite in one of the older buildings. The A/C was a window unit add on and was not really sufficient to cool the room, it was also quite loud. Otherwise, the room was very neat, clean and nicely decorated. I would definitely recommend staying in the hotel suites.

We went to San Diego for some rest and relaxation, do some fishing and celebrate Cinco de Mayo. After an extensive search, we picked the Palms for it's location and price.  I wanted to do some kayak fishing and needed a parking lot I could keep the kayak attached to the roof of our car and the Palms had a nice secured lot.

Once we arrived, we were amazed at how beautiful the place was.  The grounds were well kept and it looked like an island retreat. There was a nice bar and restaurant overlooking the marina and sparkling pool. They put us in the newer Marina 3 story hotel. It was amazingly clean, the bed was perfect with the softest pillows. The room had a nice size bathroom and a balcony that overlooked the marina with a small sitting area to watch the boats go by.  It had a large flat screen TV,  sofa and chairs along with a refrigerator, microwave ad coffee maker.  You do not need to bring anything, it is all there. For the price this place was better than some 4 star hotels we have been in.

On the opposite side of our Hotel was a beach that had dingy locks, so I was able to lock up my kayak directly on the beach allowing us more freedom to roam the city. We had no complaints and have now made this our place of stay during our next visit, which will be more often now that we have found a reasonably priced nice hotel on the beach. They even have beach cruisers you can use.

Next time we will stay a week instead of 3 nights.  Thank you Best Western for giving us a great experience.

Fifteen years ago,we had celebrated mom' 80th. in this same Sunset room.
We were so satisfied then, decided to return for a surprise celebration for my 80year young SoulMate.Details have been made so smooth by Rachel at Island Palms catering department.
For fifty guests,I chose the Wedding Pkg.which includes so much for its cost.
Open bar hour, birthday cake decorated anyway I wish, flowers to complement our color scheme etc.
All so graciously handled for me.I will also have excess time and accesibility to decorate  before the afternoon of the party.
I eagerly await the event with calmness and joy!

We stayed here thru our time share. We got a double queen bed room. It was pleasant. It's just the night front desk staff didn't even smile nor motioned me to go ahead to the desk and check in. He just glanced at me and just stayed attentive to his computer screen not me. I wish that they had complimentary breakfast though even if they raise their charge for a bit since you still had to go out of Shelter Island to go to a family restaurant like IHOP.

Great Place! Great staff! We always stay at Marriott and this place was awesome!! Pools were great, food was good, hotel was spotless, room was clean and nice. The staff takes care of its patrons. We had a small issue with housecleaning and the hotel immediately resolved the issue above and beyond what I was expecting. The management came to our door to check on our stay. The front desk staff excellent. The restaurant became very busy and was understaffed, however they never stopped smiling.
Thank you and we will be back!!!

The staff was kind and helpful. Check-in was a breeze. The view, if you're on the marina side, is quite pleasant: you can see many boats docked and a hill of what I am sure are very expensive residences.

The pools are in good shape, the spa next to the larger pool is a little tore up but warm and the jets work.

Rooms and beds are nice...older but refurbished, but I liked that, it made it feel both rustic and somewhat upscale. I thought the bed was comfy, the pillows nice and the place was clean. The bathroom was also nice.

The heating/cooling unit is just a little wall one and my room got cold so I cranked it up and then it got hot. Central system would be nice but it worked.

Weird smell in room reminded me of my grandpa's old trailer park home. Not the most pleasant odor. I also smelled marijuana near the fridge but didn't locate any...that would have made the evening more fun. jk

I don't drink, but I sat at the bar and had a water while my friend had a couple of beers. The bartender was not that cool.

Overall, this place is good. Definitely worth at least 4 stars. Low key, not terribly expensive and within driving distance of anything you'd want to see in San Diego.

This was the only hotel available on a last minute call. The island Palm lobby and exterior buildings looked a little run down so I was a little worried about the room itself but was very surprised that the room was very well maintained with newer amenities ! My room location was  very quiet overlooking the Marina and the front rooms  look out on the bay.  My only complaint was that they came knocking at 8am to see if the room was vacated! Now, I did forget to place the Do Not Disturb placard on the door but my checkout was not till 12 noon. Otherwise a very nice and affordable place to rest your head at night.

My family stayed here for two days prior to a function we had Labor Day weekend.  The hotel's location is pretty close to all that SD has to offer.  We spent the day at Sea World and so our drive there was nothing.  The hotel is older, but clean and well maintained.  It's not posh by any means...but you are not paying for posh either.  We didn't check in until 11-ish pm on a Wednesday night.  We were placed in room 135.  Avoid this room; it's opposite the delivery area.  We were awaken at o'dark thirty to the sounds of delivery trucks and pure noise! Needless to say, we asked to move. The front desk accommodated our request.  The restaurant within the hotel is pretty decent too. Free Wi-Fi is another bonus!

We accidentally left our camera charger plugged into an outlet.  We called the hotel and they are going to send it to us at no charge! How is that for customer service?!  I'll definitely stay here again.

This is best Best Western I have ever stayed in and the best hotel I've stayed in a long time.  All of the staff was wonderfully friendly, checked on us, and made sure that everything was perfect.  Restaurant in the hotel had good food, too, and the front desk was helpful about coordinating our parties.  The only critique I have of the layout was that the beds seemed to be a bit crowded in our bedroom portion of the suite.  Other than that, loved the view and how QUIET the hotel was (even quieter than where I live).

I stayed here for the San Diego Comic Con and I really enjoyed my stay.  I was picked up from the airport by the hotel shuttle, and as a participating hotel there was a shuttle to the Convention Center. this was great since as a native New Yorker I don't drive and one of my concerns was getting around.  The room was a marina-facing single, it was clean and had everything one would expect.  The only odd thing was that there was no light in the walk in shower but it was fine in the end.

The hotel was one of the few places that I have been which actually follows the conservation rules I see advertised (not replacing towels if you re-hang them) hey, I notice these things.

The restaurant was good, and the staff was great. I actually never had dinner there, but breakfast was nice.

The pool and hot tub were nice. I have body-image problems, but I knew I had to try the hot tub - it was yummy! They also have a nice laundry room hidden in the back so I could travel lighter than I might otherwise.

I'd like to go back there some day, it would make a nice romantic getaway.

I have stayed here more than a half dozen times in the past few years and have loved it every time.  Rooms are clean, spacious and well priced. Grounds are spotless. Love the Point Loma location but beware that it's across the bay from downtown (a definite plus in my book but not for everyone).

We prefer the marina view to the bay view although the bay view is much improved now that motor homes are no longer allowed to overnight on the street in front of the hotel.

Excellent and incredibly friendly staff.  Bill Orman, the General Manager, has gone out of his way on more than one occasion for me and my husband - first class customer service.  We won't stay anywhere else in San Diego.

Fantastic stay!  The staff is very personable, and we're genuine in there offers for help.  We had two rooms for our party and the smaller one was still a large room with newer amenities, it also had a small lawn in front and a staircase that led down to the a beautiful walkway along the marina.

The larger room was a suite and was AMAZING!  A private vanity, separated bathroom, a huge hd flat-screen and a private portch with a view of the marina on one side and downtown san deigo on the other.   It also had a kitchen and a dining-room table for four.  We ended up staying in for dinner and used the dishes that were provided in the kitchen.

Also, in both rooms, the windows have no screens and they open to full capacity, it was so nice to get authentic ocean air instead of air conditioned hotel air.

There is also a lot of parking scattered throughout the grounds and no parking structure.  We found our favorite hotel on this trip, and plan to return within the year.

Had to give this place 5 stars. This was the hotel my hubby (then boyfriend) asked me to be his wife on our patio overlooking the marina in pouring rain...so romantic. Loved the room. It had a kitchen, living room, separate room that closed off from the living room and nice shower. Our whole stay couldn't have been any better. It was pouring rain the whole weekend we were there (March of 2010). But, it added to the romanticness of it. We could hear the rain coming down while in the room. Some people probably wouldn't have liked it, but hey there wasn't any leaks!! Love the location and they had a shuttle to Humprey's restaurant right down the street. Will definitely be coming back and reliving some wonderful memories!! :)

We only stayed here one night but would definitely stay again if we were back in the area. The Half Moon Suites resort was a little more expensive but still comparable and we chose the Island Palms because even though the Half Moon had nicer grounds, the service ratings were poor. We were not disappointed.

We didn't get to see a lot of the grounds but what we did see was very lushly planted and had a tropical getaway feel to it. The torches at night are a nice touch.

We had requested a king-size bed on the 2nd floor (anticipating noise on the 1st) with a bay view and they honored our request- usually it seems that we have to reiterate requests upon checking in at other hotels. Not at the Island Palms. We got exactly what we asked for.

The room was very clean and nicely decorated. Nothing out of a design magazine but not outdated or faded either. We had a nice sized balcony with cushioned chairs where you could sit and look across the street out at the water. I would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here for business. It's close to airport, but you don't feel like that at all on Shelter Island. My room was in Casa Marina (far end of the complex), with a nice Marina view. The room was huge and beautiful. Nice size bathroom, but I didn't like the heavy door that closes if not propped right.

The only complaint I have is that the noise can permeate very easily. There was a crazy family staying nearby my room, and I could hear every single conversation, kids scream etc - I was so happy when they left after my day 1.

In front of the hotel is the bay, and little park where you can take your morning jog or walk. I loved waking up to the sunshine over the bay. You'll need a car to venture out and try local restaurants. There are plenty of options if you're willing to drive for 3 min - I didn't find this stressful or inconvenient. Overall, very happy stay. When I come back to SD, this would be my #1 hotel choice.

This place was very pretty, very quiet, and very clean.  We went mid-week and the price was good.  We decided to stay a second night and Kyle at the front desk was awesome and moved some things around so we got what we wanted and got to stay another night, even though it was considered a holiday and they were very full.  Unfortunately, that's when LOTS of people arrived and it was more noisy than the first night, but that's not the hotel's fault.

Anyway, this place was really nice.  Free parking, free bike rental, free tennis courts, free exercise room--none of the "activity fees" that a lot of places are charging these days.  It has an indoor/outdoor restaurant.  The indoor was very nice, almost formal, we ate outside a lot to take advantage of the yacht views.  Lots of plants around, ducks and gulls to watch, and it's got water on both sides so we took a lot of walks along the Coronado side and the yacht harbor side.  I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends.

We came here for a little "weekend away" for Valentines Day.  This is also the place where we had our reception for our wedding.  This hotel is pretty awesome!

We got a decent deal which was about $100 a night.  We had a room on the bottom floor right on the edge of the hotel facing the marina.

Our room had a nice king sized bed and an awesome shower!  When we had our reception here, they gave us a free suite too which was awesome.

Close to the water, nice rooms and a good price make this 4 stars in my book.

I really wanted to give them 3 stars, but I only had 3 minor complaints which didn't really ruin the stay. So 4 seemed fair.
1. The room service cheeseburger, which I'm sure is the same as in their restaurant was garbage. We ate in their restaurant for breakfast and it was average.
2. We booked a room that was to face the bay, LOL well it did face the bay, but we couldn't see it because we were on the first floor and there were shrubs blocking our view. Oh well. Live and Learn.
3. Our patio which ended up being on the first floor, connects to other peoples patios and you can get to the glass patio door from the outside. We were concerned about safety, but it was a non issue, area seemed very safe.
I would stay their again, price is right, lots of restaurants and nice places to walk nearby. Area is quiet. Staff is pleasant. Room was very nice, comfy bed, lots of room, nice and clean, everything worked properly.

Perfect score and best value in any hotel I've ever stayed! Great location and excellent service. We had two rooms with the intent of relaxing and catching up on the little patio area in front of our room overlooking the harbor but there were no chairs. I simply called the front desk and within 5 minutes chairs and a table were brought to us. The room was well appointed with a large flat-screen TV and the king bed was super comfortable. I wish I could just move in.

Rather than drive to dinner, we stayed at the hotel's Blue Wave bar and grill- very nice. Great selection of drinks and fresh seafood- just what we wanted. Breakfast- again at the Blue Wave, was perfect. The eggs Benedict were spot on. Only improvement would be to drop that coffee pot off with us- man we could not get enough!

The grounds were lovely and well cared for. They even had a computer handy where I could print out our boarding passes for the next flight and I really wish we could have enjoyed the pool during our stay- it was so pretty! I would LOVE to stay at the Island Palms again.

Everyone that works here was so accommodating to our needs and were so willing to help us out from the minute we got here. You wouldn't believe that you're staying at a Best Western. I stayed for one night in May. This BW is situated in a great location and the style of the hotel exterior fits into the neighbourhood. It feels like you are staying at a resort. Everywhere you go, you see the water. The rooms are spacious and clean. The bathroom is very large. There is a great pool as well.

The only negative is that the hotel restaurant is not very good. The food is very average and a bit on the pricey side.

I had my wedding ceremony and reception here, as well as stayed here overnight the evening before my wedding.

Overall, the room that I stayed in was very nice!  It was a suite and everything was really comfortable and modern looking.  Even though our primary view was of the parking lot/bay I still think this was a very nice room, quiet (but not too quiet), and very nice for a Best Western hotel.  The bathroom was amazing, as it had so much space and a very interesting shower :)

As far as the wedding ceremony & reception, we got a great deal for the food & beverage minimums and the staff, especially Rachael, were amazing with making the day perfect!

If we move away from San Diego and need somewhere to stay when we come back and visit, the Island Palms would definitely be one of my first choices!

I just returned from this hotel this morning and the hotel was amazing. The view of the marina was fantastic and even though the room was right next to the marina, we didn't hear any noise from it. The only noise that I really noticed was a jet taking off because you are across a bay from the naval base but that only happened once.

The bed and the pillows are fantastic and I got the most restful sleep I've had in months there. Room was a tad small but we didn't spend much time in the room so I didn't mind. The bathroom is upgraded and I love the shower with the glass doors. So much better than a shower curtain sticking to the side of my leg. There is a good TV and the AC works very well. The ceiling was an awesome. It was white wood with beams and the room we had didn't have a room above it so we got vaulted ceilings.

Cons: It's not convenient to anything in San Diego other than the marina. There are a few restaurants in the area but I found myself driving (and getting lost) for everything. I would've liked to be able to walk around the area to shops and restaurants but I wasn't able to. It is easy to get to Rosecrans St from the hotel though and I learned that Rosecrans and Nimitz (also easy to get to) are the streets I need to get around that part of San Diego, to Sea World, and Old Town.

The restaurant is over priced for average food. The fish tacos weren't very good. I feel like I just got a mouthful of the breading and no fish. The breakfast was better but I paid $12 for the same thing I could get at Denny's for $4.

The lot is narrow and while parking was good for the first night, it was hard to find a spot on the last two nights so I ended up parking on the other side of the hotel from my room.

A pro and a con::

The con:
The hotel places a pre-authorization hold on your card for the entire stay PLUS $50 PER NIGHT. This added up to about $400 that I wasn't expecting and I didn't have enough on a single card to cover that so the system wouldn't accept my card.

The pro:
The desk clerk offered to redeem my $200 travel card BEFORE running my card and that took the $200 off of my bill and off of the pre-authorization they put on my card so I was able to cover it. Had the desk clerk not done that for me, I wouldn't have been able to check it. I've stayed at many BWs and I know that's not a normal thing to do so I greatly appreciate her doing that for us.

Even with the cons though, it's one of the best hotels I've been too and I was extremely pleased with my room. I would definitely be back, but maybe with more/better maps or use a taxi more.

Beautiful rooms and gorgeous location. Great customer service from the front desk, to the restaurant, to room service. I recommend staying here if you're a couple or small family. If you're planning to party all night, please go elsewhere, because the walls are a little thinner than I'd like, and no one wants to listen to you anyway.

I do have an advertising/marketing/website complaint about the hotel. At this time there are three buildings on the property, all of which are themed differently; however, even after quite a bit of research I still had to grill the manager to figure out which building would be best for the type of stay we desired.

I figured out they have three buildings: Island Palms, Casa del Mar, and Casa Marina. The Island Palms is the "oldest" but tends to be the most popular because of it's reasonable rates, tropical theme, and tropical foliage. The Casa del Mar building is nice and seemed the like "middle of the road" building regarding newness and prices. The Casa Marina is the newest.

From what I could tell the families go with the Island Palms and the couples and older folks go with the Casa buildings. The Island Palms also have "outside" walk-up access which makes it easy with kids or older folks, and the other buildings have interior hallway access with stairs. I think Casa Marina is the only building with an elevator.

The water and Marina view rooms in all of the buildings are very nice - seriously, either way you'd be really happy. The property is clean and quiet. The two pools are gorgeous. The restaurant was only OK. If you're going to eat there, choose seafood. The rest of the items on the menu tasted like food from Coco's or Mimi's Cafe, only twice the price.

I am sharing all of this with fellow Yelpers because it really does take a lot of work to figure out all of the differences between the buildings and what you'd prefer. If you're staying somewhere for more than a night or two, it's important to know what choices you have, right? :) Enjoy! We did.

It can be difficult to find accommodations for a group of five but this place was perfect!  We booked the suite with two Queen beds and a pullout couch; also ordered a crib.  There was space for us all to spread out a bit, which was nice.

We had a small, private balcony overlooking the marina which was a good spot to hang out in with our morning coffee.  We did order breakfast delivered each morning and were not disappointed.

No issues with service and we would not hesitate to stay here again.

Overall the location of this place is pretty nice. Spacious room's. Nice patio area gives it that home feeling. Although I do have some complains I only stayed for one night and that one night I found two cockroaches in the bathroom like seriously? Come on Best western you disappointed me. I complained on their survey, and I didn't even get an apology. I mean then what's the point of the survey? Also idk if it was their sheets or the bed but after I was really itchy. Mmm. Well I wish I had a better experience.

The director of guest service got in contact with me; with swift reaction I do appreciate their effort to correct the issue.  It's something you hardly expect let alone receive with other companies.  This only speaks of how customer oriented they are.  Thank you Best Western.

We arrived at this Hotel on August 20, 2012 for a three night stay. My wife booked a double queen in the newer building. The rate was slightly higher and well worth it. This building had an elevator and is fairly new compared to the other buildings at this location. The entire Hotel appeared well maintained as we encountered no real problems. This Hotel is located in a great location with views of the harbor, marina and Naval base.

When we entered our room, I viewed two queen beds with many pillows--GREAT! There would be no late night search for that perfect pillow. My wife and I differ on what pillow to sleep on, so there are many choices. The room had an actual HDTV with HD cable service. Don't know if the older rooms have the HDTV.

The parking area is great and there is a garage with a tennis court on top for the guests. Nice touch and use of available space. The swimming pool is located behind the main building with marina views.

We dined at the Hotel's restaurant several times. Once for their Happy Hour, once for dinner and twice for breakfast. We did dine at other locations that are listed in my reviews. Great Hotel !!!

I stayed here several years ago and I wasn't really impressed that time. The room was dirty, there were holes in the wall, and my room was right next to the ice machine and soda machines so all night I could here the clunks and banging of ice falling. The food they served at breakfast wasn't really that good either.

This time however, was a different story. The employees were friendly and besides giving me wrong directions to my room, they tried to help out as best the could. My room was big enough to fit 4 people even though it was just me (booking their only available room this weekend through a travel site probably had something to do with it) and it was very neat and orderly. There were two bathrooms, a sitting room, and the bedroom. I had to leave early the next morning so their restaurant wasn't open yet. They were nice enough to call for a cab when I was on my way out the door after checkout.

This place was awesome! We had so much fun!
We decided to go to San Diego last minute and found this place on a hotel deal site. I decided to call the hotel directly but instead got a number for Best Western corporate. I talked to the very friendly lady on the phone and asked her if she could match the price. She beat it! And put us in a better room. Then we call again (this time the hotel directly) and come to find out that oops! the lady on the phone booked the wrong room for us, so upgrade again! No questions asked.

So, we hurry on down there (as fast as the 405 will allow) and arrive around a little late, perhaps around 10pm, to a beautiful property and the night crew. Lets just say the night crew was much less helpful than the day day crew. We spent perhaps 20 minutes going up and down stairs with our luggage and asked 3 people for directions. We are hikers! There's an internal map for the outdoors, I guess but less so for the great indoors?

When we finally found our room (king suite with marina view) we were so impressed. Huge couch, dining table, fridge, microwave, 2 TVs, a porch, and a beautiful view of the marina. The bathroom was nice too with an adjoining vanity and a yummy Oxygenetics shower head. But most important was the bedroom... and the bed! King size bed with infinite count thread sheets, incredible pillows and blackout blinds! Oh my gosh we were in heaven.
My only complaint...We just slept in too frkn long everyday because that setup was so nice. ;)

The pools were great but open from early to early and the restaurant there was decent, the drinks were good and the service was great.

Service was Excellent, Prices were Excellent, Amenities were Excellent, Location was Fantastic but farther from downtown doings, which we didn't mind.
Definitely a Best Western member now, and Definitely an Island Palms fan. :)

My husband and I (along with his 3 teenage cousins) stayed in a 2 queen bed suite in the oldest building of the hotel. Having the kitchenette was convenient, but the appliances were older. The bedroom was very clean, but too small for 2 queen beds. And there were no electric plugs for all of our phone chargers. The bathroom was clean as well and looked to be remodeled. My only gripe was there was no light in the shower and it was very dark while showering. The room was furnished with one window A/C, not centralized...boo!

All in all, the room was sufficient for our one-night stay. Having made my reservation through the Best Western corporate office, I got the room for $100 less than originally quoted. Personally I don't think the room was worth the full price.

The hotel is OK for a no-frills, short stay in San Diego.

One of the Best experiences ever! Great Location! Great Room! Great Staff! My wife and I stayed in the Casa Del Mar building for four nights this April (2013). Grat central Location for site seeing (Cabrillo, Balboa Park, Gas Lamp District, Waterfront, Coronado, etc...)

Resteraunt was Ok, not great (altho the Blue Berry Pancakes for breakfast were delicious), but lots of eateries nearby, so no worries there.

We will be back.

Well where to start.  First off it's a beautiful location.  Harbor to the front of the hotel and the marina in the back.  Our room faced the harbor and the breeze always seemed to come from the marina so we never got a breeze in our room.  To cross the street and walk the shore was very pleasant.  People fishing off the pier and a couple of sea lions playing around the pier was very relaxing.  Now some of the negatives.  Our keys did not work after they gave them to us.  They did not work to get into the building nor into our room.  Someone let us in the building and after about 20 attempts the key finally opened our room.  We unloaded our stuff and went to the front desk to explain our dilemma.  Diana, the person that checked us in was working with other guests, so the other employee helped us.  I didn't catch his name because I was too drawn to the large stain on his shirt.  He recoded the keys and apologized and said a maintenance person named Simon would meet us at our room to check the lock out.  The keys still took a couple of times to work and Simon never showed to our room.  There was not a vending machine in our building, only an ice machine.  So to get snacks or a soda we would have to head to another building.  The pool, spa closest to our room was dirty....the hot tub was luke warm at best.   My showers are usually warmer.  The pool was a good temp but had all kinds of stuff on the bottom and floating in it.  Needless we only went to the pool one time during our stay.  The TV remote seemed to work when it wanted to.  It made me happy I brought my laptop and ipad so we could watch our Dish Anywhere or Hulu app.  Then there was the beds.  They seemed extremely hard when you first laid in them however, they formed around you nicely.  They aren't memory foam, but had layers of stuff that each side could adjust to firmer or softer.  I slept well in them surprisingly.  Usually a bed at a hotel is way to soft.  The restaurant onsite left something to be desired.  I have reviewed that separately as the Blue Wave Bar and Grill.  Overall I would stay here again, but may look at a couple of other hotels as well when we return.  Shelter Island itself is a great spot.

This is a really great hotel. It is literally right ON the marina and is soooo relaxing.  The rooms are spacious and have a microwave, coffee maker, and mini fridge which was nice to have. The shower was good too, decent water pressure which is totally one of my pet peeves when traveling. Clean rooms, cute patios, but not a ton to walk to if you didn't rent a car fyi.  Friendly staff....we'd stay here again if in the area.

DO NOT accept a guestroom in the "Island Palms" building.  They have roaches!  Tons of little ones.  I saw them for the first time when I was in the bathroom about to take a shower, and I was super grossed out.

I complained at the front desk and they were not surprised at all, but they apologized and said they'd send someone to take care of it.  The next day, MORE roaches!  I noticed they were coming out of the wall surrounding the shower.  I complained again, and this time they moved us to a room in the "Casa Marina"  building.

The room in the "Casa Marina" was a VAST improvement (no roaches), but by that time our vacation was coming to an end, and I had hardly slept, worried about the little roaches.  Since most of the reviews I read were overwhelmingly positive, I thought I'd warn you.

The rooms in the other buildings at this hotel are nice, and the location is great, but stay away from the rooms in the main building (where the reception desk is located).

I visited in late September 2012.

We were supposed to stay at the Best Western Seven Seas in hotel circle, yet somehow all the rooms were occupied by the time we got there. We were searching for another hotel in the middle of the night, when we finally called Island Palms.

We explained our dilemma, and they booked us a room right away, giving us discounts so that we could get as close as possible to the rate we were planning to pay at the other hotel. When we arrived, they told us that they were upgrading us for free to a junior suite in the Casa Marina building. We were thrilled to discover a gorgeous room with a tranquil Harbor View and balcony. The generosity of this hotel turned our vacation around and made us incredibly happy!

The only thing that didn't impress me was paying at checkout. We were quoted several different rates for the room--you would think that they would have somehow made a note about how much they would be charging guests. It wasn't a big deal--I politely told them what we had agreed on when we checked in, and they fixed it with a smile.

We loved staying here and would happily stay again in that beautiful room!

Recently stayed here and most things exceeded my expectations. I'd stayed next door at Kona Kai two years ago but this place was nicer. The rooms are more spacious, bathrooms large and well laid out. Lots of counter space. Very, very clean! Staff is really nice and helpful. Got several shuttle rides to various places. Note: you need to call from the airport for pick up. They do not have a shuttle that goes there regularly unless you call to get a ride.

There is a restaurant on site which is convenient.

Cons: WiFi is really slow there. I've never experienced such slow Netflix streaming! But it is free. I would totally stay here again.

At first I had some issues with my room, the walkway outside of my patio is 'public property' since it goes to the marina; there was a fight, cursing and dogs also fighting. I let the manager know and he moved/upgraded my room; then at my upgraded room there was a wedding outside of it so I needed to 'go away' for 45 minutes, which was fine because they gave me drink tickets and free food at the restaurant. Any issue I had, upper-management went above and beyond take care of me (some of the normal staff didn't really care if I was happy, and that's my only complaint).

The multiple pools are great - the on-site restaurant is good, the parking is decent (although scarce at times).

I would definitely come here again - this was one of the best trips I have taken to San Diego and I have been here dozens of times.

My wife and I stay at this hotel about 2-3 times each year.  We stay in the Casa Del Mar building with a view of the bay.  During the summer, the prices are too high for us, however, other times during the year you can get great deals.  They don't charge for parking like most other hotels in the San Diego area.

The pools are good, the balconies (Casa Del Mar) are great!  Right across the street in a park with a great area to walk.  You get a great view of the bay right across the street.

One of our favorite places to stay.

We decided to have our wedding here and make it easy for all out of town guests and for ourselves, by booking all of our activities in one place. I had my bridal shower here, then the rehearsal dinner, wedding, and even a post wedidng brunch. In short, I was at this location many, many times!  (June/July 2014) All of the staff members are friendly and very customer service oriented. All of our events were a success, very classy, fun, and each in a different room/location, as they have options to choose from, so that created a nice variety. We were very impressed and so happy with how everything went. Lauren is whom we worked with and she went above and beyond for us, making the whole process smooth and stress free, we had the best wedding ever! As far as the hotel rooms go, the location is unique for the fact that each of the 3 buildings has a different personality. Our suite was in the Casa Del Mar, which is more modern, my parents were in Casa Marina, which they said was more private, and  the bridal party was in Island Palms, that is where we all got ready, it was a nice mix of tropical and quaint feeling. They all loved their rooms and all of our rooms faced the marina side, so great views! The location was perfect for us because it was a great way to showcase the city we love by being on the water, but also by being accomodating to our guests due to bike rentals and free airport shuttle service they offer. I have to point out that the Blue Wave Bar and Grill inside the hotel, also has yummy food and drink options, and that the food for our wedding was actually even more delicious then when we had gone in for our tastings. Whether a local, or out of towner, you will not be disappointed at Island Palms.

Reserved hotel through Hotels.com for a King or 2 Queens.  The hotel was full and they were only able to give us a room with 2 double beds---hardly romantic!  The staff worked hard to get us a room with a King the 2nd night.  Nice views of the water and nice area for walking.  Close to restaurants, entertainment and Point Loma.  Room 2nd night was spacious, clean and comfortable.  First night the room was small and nothing fancy.  Not overall impressed.  No free breakfast but good price for the area.

We had our company Holiday luncheon here and the venue was good for the event.  Don't know too much about the accommodations, but looks decent.  The food that was served was good.  I had way too much of the beef dish.  Chicken was okay, but I preferred the beef dish.  Scalloped potatoes were excellent with a dash of A1 sauce to top it off.  I really enjoyed the lemon chiffon cake for dessert.  Ate way too much, but it helped soak up the Bali Hai Mai Tais after the lunch was over.

I loved staying here. I went for my birthday weekend and had soo much fun. We stayed in the Casa Del Mar part of the hotel which is soo much better than the other side of the hotel.

Pros: room was clean, the furniture was updated and in style, the room had a view of the marina, a patio, we had a kitchen, closet, large tv, clean bathroom, there was a paved path along the marina, 2 pools, restaurant/bar on site breakfast was good, employees were nice, they had fruit plate and a bottle of wine in the room along with a birthday card for me (I told them it was my birthday and they clearly stated that requests are not guaranteed), windows opened and had shutters, the hotel Is right across the street from a small fishing pier (we went for a walk/run one morning. I was a great view),  they had a hairdryer and iron/board in room, refrigerator, cooking pans plates cutlery and glasses, free bike rentals.

Cons: I was overcharged on the bill and had to report it in order to get it adjusted, I paid the breakfast rate where my confirmation email clearly stated "all adults receive meal vouchers each day of stay" but when I went to the front desk I was told "there is only 2 allowed per room", the parking is free but I had to park in the detached parking structure (But if do not find parking you have to park across the street, and if you have more than one car you have to pay to park the additional car.), the internet is free but slow and you have to ask for the code at the front desk, a/c in the room but the thermostat is in the wall you cant control it on the machine (which is not the problem, I just didn't find the thermostat until the second day of our stay, and we spend our first night in the humid room.), the ice machine was far from our room.

the hotel was also 5-15 mins from gaslamp, tidepools, old town. loved this about the hotel! I feel the price I paid was a 9/10.

I will be back!

The rooms are clean and the facility overall is very clean. It is well kept.

overall a very good value.

The stuff needing improvement:
The overall parking is a bit annoying. There is one parking lot and if you don't get a room near your spot...way too much walking if you are unloading your car.

need more food options for vegetarians.

Really nothing special about this place, if you have a view it's probably OK but for the price OK isn't enough to bring me back. Our room was clean with a nice bathroom and great shower. Had a retrofitted  noisy air conditioner in the wall that ran constantly. Our room looked out into a passage way and stairs. There are other places to stay for the same price that are better on Shelter Island, our favorite is still Humphrey's.

I absolutely loved this place. My boyfriend and I come often to San Diego to visit and this is the best hotel we have stayed in. The hotel has water on both sides with incredible views and is located on shelter island. It's easily accessible to many different areas of San Diego and you can get there quickly. There's a restaurant located at the hotel and many more nearby. There were 4 of us and a baby and originally had a room in the older part of the hotel. It was a little small for us and upgraded to a larger room in a newer part of the hotel and it was amazing! We had great service and a fantastic time. This is the third year that I have stayed for the night of 1/1 to 1/2. You can read about the first year - management had made some MAJOR changes and they have maintained the quality that I received last year.

The staff was exceptional this year and when I got to my room, there was a hand crafted note card welcoming me back to the hotel with a huge dish of sliced fresh fruit. Someone took some time to make my stay very nice and make me feel welcome.

The room was in a nice quiet location overlooking the boats in the marina, and the sunrise was spectacular from the patio.

I stayed here during my wedding and everything went well. I booked for 1 rm/2 beds for one of my bridesmaids and me/ rm after the wedding. The rooms were very clean. Except on the final night of staying here the closet started to smell awful.

I was too tired to complain about the room(day before wedding) but did mention it before being transferred to a different booking with my then husband. They apologized and mentioned they would have transferred me and gave me additional 20% off discount.

The room with my husband was facing the marina and it was very cozy. Perfect weather and atmosphere. Definitely more quiet (no boats in the morning). Room was taken care off and cleaned twice a day.

I would stay here again in the future and even recommend this place to friends now who are booking through AAA.  The price is good, and employees were very nice. Parking may be limited so mention if you and your family are taking more than one car.

My husband and I got the chance to stay here for our honeymoon and were blown away by the service and hotel grounds. We are by no means well off so this trip was definitely on a budget and the bang we got for our buck was well worth it . The rooms are beyond reasonably priced for what you get. We had amazing views of the marina an always spotless room , and the most friendliest staff I've encountered in my traveling.  Next time we come back to San Diego this will be the place we stay.

Wow, where do I start?  I made our reservations here over 6 to 8 weeks ago. Considering the "sheltered" quiet location of the Island Palms, the great rate we got is awesome.  The lady who took our reservation was extremely nice and did her best to earn our business.

When we received our emailed confirmation, I glanced at it, but later noticed that we had two queen beds, not the king and sofa we'd asked for.  Though I called twice to rectify the error, I was told there were not any king jr. suites available.

Upon arriving though, Alison was able to find us what we wanted in the first place, for one night, then upgraded us at no extra charge for a much larger suite!  She knows how to handle such situations for repeat business!

Danny, the day manager greeted us with cheerful courtesy and moved our things for us when we were out enjoying SD.

I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a safe haven to stay, when visiting this metropolis.

Thanks for everything!

Stayed here for one night after our friends' lovely wedding over at Bail Hai Restaurant.

During our super short stay here, these were my thoughts about this hotel:

-Cute room.
-Nice sized bathroom, especially the sexy shower.
-Bed was comfortable. Fun to jump on and have sexy-time on. ;)
-Ceilings and windows reminded me of a beach house.
-Nice flat screen TV.
-Nice to have a fridge and microwave in the room.
-Parking spots are uber tight but it wasn't hard to find parking even when the lot looked full.
-Checking out was a breeze. Just call the front desk and you're all set to go.

When their hotel shuttle was unavailable, the hotel advised me to hail a taxi and that, with receipt, they would reimburse me upon arrival. They honored their promise and I made it to the hotel quicker than their hotel shuttle would have arrived.

Their cleaning staff was great and the rooms were well maintained throughout our stay. Also, the gym was 24 hours and for a gym rat like me it's a miracle.

Incredible views,  access to free bike rental and reasonable prices such as $127 a night made this hotel grade A.

The only drawback is the thickness of the walls, which a times could make you here your fellow hotel guests.

Overall, I love this hotel and totally expect to go back there in the future.

My dad came for a couple of days, and since he had an event in the Point Loma area, I used my Yelp skillz to find a place for him to stay.

The location of this place is pretty beautiful! It overlooks the bay, and you can see all the ships. It is also really in the heart of Point Loma, right off of Rosecrans. Not bad! On the "back" side of the hotel, you can see the marina which is ridiculously peaceful and pretty. I love it so much.

I cannot attest to price, as I did not check. So...you're on your own there.

Rooms are fine! Clean and pretty. The beds are soooo comfortable! Omg. There are a lot of outlets to charge all yo stuff, so don't fret, techies!

Seems to have all you'd need or want in a hotel, with some added perks of pretty views!

After staying at a nightmare-inducing Best Western in Honolulu, I vouched to never stay at one again.

With the price (cheaper than the Courtyard and many other hotels), an awesome location, good reviews, and free parking, I decided to take my chances.

The rooms aren't anything special, but CLEAN (most important!) and updated.  My only complaint is the mattress, which on the softest setting was still not of a good hotel quality.  Another thing that is lacking is nice toiletries, but I could really care less about that.

As far as a view, we payed more for an harbor view but honestly - the marina view was much better.  To look at the harbor you have to look over a busy road and huge parking lot first, and the marina was just stunning with the masts and Point Loma homes overlooking it.

The grounds are nice as well as the pools, and though there isn't much on the island, it was nice to walk or jog around it.  There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance in Point Loma.

My cousin had recently gotten married so the family packed and went  to San Diego. The hotel is very nice, I stayed in the newest building facing the yachts. The room is gorgeous , modern , and very posh . Furthermore, my room was pretty sound proof. I could not hear anything outside my room so that's a big plus for light sleepers.

But I value a good night sleep over aesthetics, the  fact that my bed was so firm I woke up at least a good 5 times throughout the night is a big enough issue for me to not recommend this hotel. Even dinky places have pillow tops, why not this place? So firm and difficultly to sleep on. Everyone in my family complained except for my sister. Honestly she could sleep on the floor and it wouldn't phase her.

My wife and stayed for just one night last Sunday and had a very nice time at this place. We were given a handicap room (which had a large bathroom) and was in the single story section of the hotel so no one was above us. Staff was friendly and very helpful; even recommending restaurants other than the one in the hotel.
I would definitely come back here next time i have to stay in San Diego.

Well, this is a tough review to write because in some ways the Island Palms far exceeds what you would expect from a Best Western but in other ways it is typical. I think I was pretty disappointed overall but part of that comes from reading some of the reviews that oversold the place a bit and also because we came on a holiday weekend when it was super crowded and we paid about $250 a night. Its not worth that much but definitely worth more than your average BW motel.

To say that this is a resort is perhaps overstating. I guess you could say that it is a family resort. If you are expecting to lounge at the pool while reading magazines and having a cabana boy bring you drinks with umbrellas in them (which is basically what I want out of a summer vacation) then you will be disappointed. The pool was incredibly crowded and overwhelmed with kids. There was no lifeguard so there was a lot of jumping and splashing and general rough-housing that made it pretty much impossible for anyone to actually swim. When I ventured in for a short time I got kicked in the head by a pre-teen boy who apparently been dared by his friend to see if he could jump from the side of the pool over top of me and cannonball into the center. Didn't quite make it. Fortunately they did have pretty good cocktails and that helped me to recover but there were not nearly enough servers so it was pretty tough to actually get someone to acknowledge you and take your order and then it took forever to get the drinks/food. The meals were served in paper take out boxes inside of plastic bags. I guess so they didn't have to have bussers? But needless to say it was a lot of waste and the trash cans were overflowing. Don't even get me started on the state of the bathroom in the pool area. Again, to be fair, we were there on 4th of July but really, they should have known that they were fully booked that weekend and staffed up accordingly.

The rooms have a cute beachy theme but are pretty much just basic motel rooms. Ours was in the older section which does show its age in some areas. But it seemed like the furniture was fairly new and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom had been partially renovated with a new vanity and shower. It was a little weird that the coffee maker and cups and everything was set up in the bathroom right next to the sink. It seemed a little unsanitary. They did have a mini fridge in the cabinet under the TV. It was nice that instead of a honor bar they had it empty so we could put drinks and leftovers in it. Our room was right smack next to the marina which was nice to sit out on the front porch and look at the ships. But we soon found that it seemed to be a high traffic area with people coming and going from their boats (if you dock at the marina you can also use the hotel's facilities) and so we had to keep our blinds closed the whole time for privacy. As others have mentioned, the a/c didn't work too well but it's San Diego so the weather is beautiful all the time anyway.

The main reason we booked this place was the location. Shelter Island is the perfect place to watch the 4th of July fireworks. You have a fantastic view. And there is plenty of room in the park overlooking the bay to spread out a blanket and enjoy the show. A lot of locals got there early with tents and camp chairs and spent the whole day grilling and socializing. However, we were still able to find a good spot when we showed up around dust. Other than that, this is kind of a sleepy area without much to do but it is a fairly short drive to downtown. You can take the trolley or a $20 cab ride. I do think that if you don't have a boat (and so need access to the marina) there are better areas in Point Loma or Pacific Beach or La Jolla where you can get a water view for around the same cost but have access to an actual beach. I wouldn't mind staying at Shelter Island again for the fireworks, though. But I would probably choose one of the other hotels since they all seemed a bit more upscale and more dink friendly.

Wow free parking, free wifi, refrigerator, and amazing views. This place is WELL worth it. Not to mention the great walking path right outside the hotel rooms that follow the marina. This was such a nice place for a Valentines day getaway with my girlfriend.  The room bathrooms were very nice and especially the brand new showers. The TVs were big and had a very good quality picture which was perfect for watching the Olympics. My girlfriend slept exceptionally well. Love the vaulted ceilings. Definitely will recommend to anyone!

We have stayed at the Best Western Plus Island Palms 4 times. The first 3, including a 4 night stay last Thanksgiving, were perfect and we always looked forward to returning. This time was different. When we checked in, we were supposedly given a complimentary upgrade since we are Diamond members.

As soon as we opened the door to the room I knew this was not good. Trading a newer room in a building with an elevator, a balcony with an excellent view for a larger room with no balcony, an obstructed view, and old wooden stairs leading to it, is not an upgrade to me. No, we did not need the kitchen or a separate bedroom.

I immediately returned to the office and asked to be moved to a room like we had originally reserved. The man in the office was very nice and understanding. He was able to move us to the 3rd floor in the Casa Marina building, a room that we had originally requested. So far so good this time. The room was just as I had remembered it from a previous stay.....a nice clean room, 2 queen beds, with an excellent marina view.

And then came bedtime. In our past stays here, the beds were always good. I don't understand all the heavy bedding that hotels have gone too, but that's another story. The beds themselves were terrible. As soon as you lie down, it's almost impossible to not roll to the middle. It's almost like there is a ridge around the outside with a big dip in the middle. It's not only uncomfortable but difficult to get out of. Here is a quote from a description of the bed: "The bed you are about to experience is the Garden Sleep System by Natural Form. This revolutionary bed provides perfect support for a restorative night's sleep." I only wish that were true. There's a dial which is supposed to allow you to adjust the firmness for that particular side of the bed. I could not tell that the dial made any difference...I just rolled to the middle of the bed!

At checkout, I expressed my disappointment with this stay and the reasons why it was not as good as previous stays. The man at the desk was courteous, listened carefully to my issues, He asked me to please let him know if there were problems during our next stay at the Island Palms and they would take care of them. Maybe our next visit will be better.

The hotel staff was very friendly and professional. As Expedia Elite members they upgraded us to a suite. The room was large and had a nice seating area and nook table. The mini-fridge was more like a "micro" fridge. The TV remotes were strangely lagging or the batteries were dying, so we didn't even fuss watching TV. The grounds are well kept, and the location is great for going to a Humphrey's show. Walking to nearby food can be a bit far to walk (about 15 minutes).

The people at this hotel made my wedding trip so wonderful.  When we checked in I had told the front desk that we were married just 3 days ago and they gave us a free upgrade and then coming in we saw they had chocolate strawberries for us.  How sweet is that? They were the only place that have done something special and out of their way for us newly weds!  Thank you so much!

I was contacted by the Director of Guest Services after filling out a survey about my experience at this hotel.

He informed me that the a/c was indeed not working and had to be repaired. After investigating the hot bathroom floor, they also determined that there was a pipe leak in the area that was causing the problem.  They had to dig up the floor to repair the issue which would correct the hot flooring and sauna-like room.

I was very pleased to find out we weren't going crazy!! Now we know why the room felt like a sauna and why we thought the room had heated floors!

He did the right thing and took care of us by giving us a credit for our stay.
I would try this hotel again. The place was nice and has great architecture which is part of the reason we ended up here in the first place.

Definitely spend a little more and get a "Marina View" room. The rooms are right on the water and have great views of hundreds of sailboats!

Really impressed each time we stay here. When I walked into the lobby I was greeted by Danny who said "welcome back!" and remembers me from me years past. The hotel is busy during the summer months but they seem to have the infrastructure to handle the influx.

Only issue is now they charge for parking. Because we made our last reservations well before the change, they waived our fee.

Happy costumer and will continue to only stay here on our family trips to SD.

The location of the hotel is nice.  It was fairly quiet.  Our friends had issues with their room not being ready and having to wait hours for it, although they did try to compensate them.  The thing I hated most is that our room was less than clean.  The mirrors were splattered and smeared, the pull out mirror was grimy and dusty, the remote for the TV was thrown into a drawer and although it was a "clean" remote there was nothing clean about it.  The chairs in the room reeked of body odors.  There are too many other hotels in the area to make this one I would return to.  Also, you are charged ten dollars a day to park there.  How ridiculous!  So, I cannot recommend this particular hotel, but I would definitely try one next door.  Also, the WIFI was slower than dial up.

This is a review about an event we held here this past week. We looked at different venues with accommodating views and menus, the room settings, etc...and went with Samantha here at Island Palms. We had sent emails out to 5 places for information and Samantha was the first one to respond right away.
BTW-it took over 24 hours for the rest of the places to contact us, a couple of them took about a week.

When you are planning an event in less than 3 weeks, you need someone to respond quickly.

We planned breakfast, lunch and snack. They gave us the large room downstairs and it was split in 2 for classroom style then the luncheon area. It was great.
We did an italian buffet and the food was DELICIOUS!!! And SO MUCH of it too!!

Every little adjustment I asked them to do, whether it was move a table, or adjust the A/C, or extra chairs-never did they make me feel like I was inconveniencing them! The staff was courteous and professional and extremely attentive!!

We will definitely be having more events here in the future. Great staff and great food!!

The BEST event staff ever! My siblings and I wanted to have our parents 50th wedding anniversary somewhere with a view, this is the place. Beautiful, the whole experience was amazing.  Samantha our event coordinator held our hand all the way through every detail. You don't want to miss anything when you are celebrating 50 years of marriage, and we didn't thanks to Samantha, Ashley and their team.  Our guests loved the food, thank you chef. If you want to celebrate any special occasion I would recommend this place to everyone, especially native San Diegians, in which we had 5 generations and the wedding party from 1964,  all present on this special evening.
I just can't say enough about Samantha and the staff at the Island palms hotel.

Ok. Think about everything that comes to mind when you think of the Best Western chain of hotels.  Are you there yet?  Good.

Now forget that.  Seriously, forget it.  This particular Best Western is a resort guys.  And it's a bargain, to boot!  I booked this hotel on a whim and I wish that I'd have stayed here for the entire time I was in San Diego.

Picture this...traveling across the country with a five year old.  A four and a half plane ride plus a two hour time difference?  Not a walk in the park.  I land at the San Diego airport...free shuttle to the hotel.  Nice.  Upon checking in they upgraded my room for no extra charge and I didn't even have to ask.  Very nice.  The onsite restaurant was closing in thirty minutes and the sweet girl at the front desk offered to keep our luggage so that I could feed the crazy five year old who was attempting to ruin my vacation ;) Again, so very nice.  Then the room.   Ahhhh.  The bed, the pillows, the very sexy shower.   Oh my.

When I was checking out the next day that crazy five year old tagging along with me was entranced with the koi pond in the lobby.  I, of course, was worried about her falling in.  The sweet guy behind the front desk, however, gave her a few pennies to toss in and make wishes.  Need I say more?  5 stars all the way!

Here for a wedding.  Great scenery of harbor and hills behind it.

The wedding ceremony was held in one the little patio areas between some of the motel rooms.  Unusual, but uniquely cool.  The reception then moved inside (downstairs).  Food was very good.

The only issue was that the room was very hot.  It never got below about 77, which feels like 85 when you are dancing.  They need to increase the HVAC capacity.  The outside air was pretty warm though, so not sure how it would on a cooler day.  But still . . . Being that warm at 11 o'clock at night is pretty hot for a reception.

Honestly thought I would be getting more sq footage for the amount I paid BUT they gave us a great marina view across from their garden for my dads birthday LITERALLY just a few steps out of our door and we see ocean. We picked the hotel because of the view and we're glad we had it basically in our backyard.

There was a $10 parking fee but it was waived for my dads birthday. Also very very nice staff! Had a great chat when I checked in. And they tossed in a free cookies for us too!

This is a wonderful place to stay and to boot we got a very good rate from booking.com . We stayed during our stay to visit local colleges and found out that we were also there during the ComiCon event.  I was nervous that the service might be lacking because the hotel was so full, but I was pleasantly surprised.  The place was quiet, clean and beautiful.  Ideally located right across the marina on one end and the beach (yes walk down a bit past the walking paths and there is an actual little beach) on the opposite end; there are also firepits for roasting marshmallows at sundown.  At about 9pm every night there is a fireworks show I believe coming from SeaWorld which you can see as you stand by the Marina; great treat for the family.

We had an extra special treat because after our first night we realized that our room beds had all been changed to new beds and headboards!! So this is not a routine thing, obviously, but if you are staying in the 100's your mattresses are probably BRAND NEW!!

Only con would be that the room is a little cramped for my family of 5, but other than that the room was great and the bathroom was really big.

There's a lot to like about this Best Western Plus.  At first, I almost backed off from the $300 per night price, but that seems to be the going summer rate around the San Diego area.  We were in town for a wedding, and since we had a baby the proximity to the wedding venues was the key.  The hotel is so big that staff use golf carts to get around, and there seems to be a pretty big variety of rooms.  Our room was in the 500s near the tennis courts, and it was recently remodeled and very nice.  We had patio with a view of the water, a  microwave, a coffee maker, and a nice bathroom.  The they also had a newer setup near the TV with 4 electrical plugs to power all your devices, and I think you could even connect your computer the TV, although we didn't try that.  The beds were comfortable and the room is much bigger than just holding 2 queen beds.  There was room to move around, change clothes, store luggage, etc.  Everywhere we went the staffers were friendly.  There are 2 swimming pools, and and every room has a view of either the marina with boats, or the bay.   If you have kids, there is a small playground just a few minutes' walk away, and there were tons of people up early running, walking dogs, or fishing from a nearby pier.

The only reason I'm not rating this Best Western Plus higher is the cost during summer.  If you can travel during off-season and want to be near Shelter Island, definitely give this place a look & ask if you can be in one of the newer rooms.  Definitely enjoyed my stay here.

This hotel is on shelter island so you have great views of the San Diego skyline, the marina and the San Diego bay.  There are two buildings.  The older one has the lobby and the rooms are smaller but still comfortable.  The beds and pillows are great.  I slew great here.  I the newer building they have Jr. suites that are huge with a full size refridgerator.  I stayed in one of these rooms on my last visit.  It was a fantastic room.  This visit I stayed in a room in the older building.  I then got moved to the newer one with a marina view and balcony. Each building has its own pool.  The pool by the lobby is nicer and larger but the other one is more then adequate.  Both have a hot tub.this location is convenient to the airport, downtown and Ocean Beach.  There is also a lighthouse at the end of the Point that is worth checking out.

The hotel has a shuttle that takes you to the airport.  It would be nice if they also took you to the Gaslamp District since parking is very difficult there as well as a lot of places in the downtown San Diego area.

Just spent a couple nights and had a great time.  The place is on shelter island and has a small park right along the harbor side.   Back side faces the attached marina.

Check in was fast and easy.  Woman at the desk gave me some good restaurant suggestions.

Room was new and well decorated.   Coffee maker, microwave, fridge were included.   Bathroom of the king bed room had shower only.  TV has lots of movie rentals available including recent releases and adult.

Pool area and hot tub were clean and well maintained.   They lay towels on all the chairs each morning.  Pool is comfortably warm.

Did not try the restaurant except or getting take out coffee.  Great way to enjoy the pool side is sipping coffee and writing your yelp review.

They have bikes which we did not use.  Did ride our own bikes to Cabrillo National Monument.  It's a 13 mile round trip.  Was a 30 Mike round trip to la jolla.

Had an amazing time at the Best Western in Shelter Island this last weekend! Gorgeous views and great accommodations. Normally these hotel is a bit pricey because of the great location but we got a good deal on 3rd party website for half the regular price!!! Bargain Shoppers Unite!!

Our room had a large king size bed with lots of comfy pillows, large flat screen tv, refrigerator and microwave in addition to the standard amenities. The room wasn't huge but it was well decorated. We loved the bedding, wall art and HUGE MIRROR in the bathroom! Everything looked very clean with no visible stains or wear and tear.

Our bed was very comfortable but we had trouble sleeping due to the lack of black out curtains. The room only had shutters which were a nice touch. They worked great for the most part except in the early morning, the sun still lit up the room through the shutters. We also could see car headlights every time someone drove up due to the fact that our room faced the parking lot.

The noise level was pretty low but we could hear people walking above us and outside the door. We could hear the plans taking off since we were so close to the airport but it wasn't too bad.

The staff was super friendly and accommodating! I had to park prior to check in, which is at 4pm, and they gave me a parking pass a head of time. Check out time is noon which is great cause it wasn't too early. After checking out the front desk clerk even offered to let us use the pool! It was really nice not feeling rushed off like at some hotels!

The location not only had great views but was in walking distance to a bunch of restaurants and just a few minutes drive to Liberty Station.

The only negative I have about this review is that we couldn't stay longer! :) If you are considering staying here, DO IT!

We spent 4 night here in middle Oct 2014 and we had great time here, our room was clean, comfortable. I can find everything I need in my room, and the front desk guys were nice and friendly.

This hotel located in a beautiful place, quite and have great view, one side is San Diego skyline and the other side is a beautiful bay have a lot of boats and yachts. This hotel is easily accessible to many different areas of San Diego. The thing I like most in this hotel is the pool, it is the best hotel pool I have ever see, it is a outdoor heated pool, large and deep (8 or 8.5), water is clear, almost no pool smells.

Things could be better:
1. Our Bathroom have some bad smell, but it is not too bad, my wife not even notice this.
2. Room are not very quite, I have been wake up at 2:00 am, upstairs guys are talking so loud and dancing? in there room and windows are open, I close my windows and it was still noisy. I have to go up and shut them up.

In general, everything looked clean.  Beds were comfortable, pillows on the soft side.  The bathroom tub had signs of mildew.  The stairway was smelly, elevator was too slow and frequently occupied by the maids with the laundry or cleaning supplies.  It would've been nice to have an elevator for passengers only. The second pool didn't have towels 2/3x we visited.   The restaurant food was pretty blah.  Parking was $10/night, too much for being in an area where there is free parking everywhere.

I did not take full advantage of the free bike rentals or equipment checkout for the tennis courts, but the pools are nice, especially the fireplace by the pool concept. We booked this hotel through orbits based on reviews. There are 3 different building that make up the entire hotel. I was a little put back at first because the room seemed pretty old and musty. I guess with time it grew on me. There are defiantly newer/renovated rooms at this specific hotel. We had a great view of the bay. We opted to not pay for parking and just parked across the street at the public lot. Room we quiet until we got what had to have been a pack of elephants rooming above us.
We enjoyed three pool on multiple nights. We opted to go around 8 pm as to miss the crowds. The hotel also accommodated a very early check in as well as late check out.

Room prices were fair for the location, but that's where "fair" ends!  The place was average for presentation. Poor working wall-mount A/C system greets you when you get inside. Restaurant was hyped by their staff though it ended up very expensive for what you got...and what you got for dinner was awfully "BLAND.

What really was annoying was their $10:00 parking fee on top of your room price?!?!?!?  What in the hell is that all about. Seems if you rent a room, parking is and should be free??????

Internet was "completely non existent". If you walked-up to the front desk, it worked fine. When you were in your room, NOTHING!!!  And man, I mean NOTHING...

Not the worst place in the world, just don't  go there with high expectations and you should still enjoy the area.
