Despite the smell of stale beer in the stairwell (reminded me of my college dorm), and the half-consumed bottles and cans of beer that were perched in every little nook and corner of the place, the rooms were actually very clean. There is definitely a sort of grungy feeling to the area in general, but with all the people traveling between the beach and the street, the place is surprisingly clean and well-run. The pool area is great for kids and the security is good. It's a good place to relive your college years...

If you are looking for a serene beach getaway, this is NOT the place.  If you are okay with rowdy beachy "looking for a party" kinda atmosphere, this is perfectly fine.  You are right on the boardwalk. It is a lot a fun people watching, shopping for trinkets, renting bikes and riding on the boardwalk.  We did all that & had a good time.  The hotel/lodge itself has a lot to be desired.  The rooms are crummy.  Bad furniture, minimum decor.  Funny smell.  You know, cheap.  But it wasn't cheap!  This must be the only BW that do not serve breakfast.  Does have free wireless.  Paid $12 per day for parking.  A lot can be forgiven b/c of the location.  However, the TV remote did not work and they did not/could not fix it and offered us no solution.  That was a major inconvenience and sucked.
The pool area is teeny weeny and not enough chairs.  Again, a lot can be forgiven b/c of the location, but can't forgive the TV remote.

I stumbled upon this place when my hotel was oversold and i had no room.  Eric was the gentleman that helped me. He referred to me as Scottsdale Sandy, I stayed often! He found me an ocean front room and I loved the view and location! The hotel is clean, definitely busy and some families, so allot of activity. Nice pool with a view of the ocean, steps to biking or rollerblading on the boardwalk. The staff is exceptional and I think due to my frequency of stays they gave me exceptional deals and upgrades! The manager is a really exceptional too!  Of course World famous is across the street, plenty of shops and nightlife in walking distance.

The rooms are not luxurious, but very clean and well maintained!

They are an exceptional moderate hotel!!

Also safe too! Key is required to access!

Not bad for a room smack on the boardwalk in Pacific Beach. Slightly pricey ($250 for a single king) but I guess it is the summer season and you are ON THE BEACH.

Originally our room was not going to have an ocean view. However upon check-in, for some unknown reason, we were placed in a room that has a full view of the boardwalk, beach and ocean. And it was the same price.

So the fact that we got upgraded for free is a big win and worth 4 stars alone.

A negative (and its not really their fault): a surf content was being held that weekend, right in front of the hotel, and every 20 minutes one of those migraine-inducing airhorns would blast off. And yes, it started at 8am on Sunday.

Got a military rate, always appreciate a place that honors it.  Had it not been for that, wouldn't consider this place for the going rate of 290/night.  Oceanview room is a must, it's right on the boardwalk in PB, perfect for drinks on the balcony and peoplewatching.  Pool had a good view, but only 5 loungers facing the ocean so get one early.  Location on the shore and within walking distance of the PB bars and restaurants, pretentious though they may be.  Two stars upped to three because of view.

Great location, right on the beach!  However the rooms are pretty crummy and their hot tub is a real piece of crap.  the ting was so noisy when you turned on the jets that is was pretty much unbearable.  It also looks like it really needs to be completely replaced.  the bed was uncomfortable, thankfully we brought our own pillows.  Gotta have a feather pillow.  But it was one of the lowest priced places in the area.

Places fill up quick around here so it might be best to plan ahead.

So I didn't stay here, but the boyfriend's parents did in hopes of a relaxing beach getaway. I just hope they don't mind the loud drunk tards in longboards and beach cruisers.

(Once again, I am in PB. Wtf? Oh yes hanging out with boyfriend's parents, hey, I love his folks!)
They got an ocean-front room where we had a killer view of the sunset. The pool area is rather small, there is a pool (duh, right?) and a hot tub (if you don't mind taking the risk of picking up hepatitis from the girls with the lower back tattoos, orange skin and ugly highlights) with a rather nice view to the ocean.
The pool is not in the best of sanitary conditions (there's sand and a little seaweed here and there, you're better off hitting the ocean for a swim).
Parking is $12 per day, unless you're feeling lucky like I did and found street parking.

The room my boyfriend's folks are staying at is rather small but decent, air conditioned, balcony with two lounge chairs and a little table, coffee machine, TV, bathroom, mini fridge, sink, small bar with stools, you know, the basics.

It smells kindda funky in the hallway, and the stairway railings are a disturbing salmon pink and I will probably have nightmares about the general decor and the designs on the bedspreads, but hey, all hotels are creepy, to some extent, it's kind what makes a hotel a hotel.

Well lets see I think the conversation went like this.....No bugs so I guess we can't give it a one star. Yeah it was on the chopping block!!!!

This place is hard to rate so low after all it is right on the beach and in the beautiful area of PB. The problem is we stayed here to save a little money and attend a conference and not to go to the beach which was cloudy anyway.

    -Location right on the beach
    -Price cheaper than most
-Looked to have a nice pool

-Shower that felt like razorblades, I mean if I wanted a pressure wash I would have gone to jail.
-TV that as you turned it on made a super loud humming noise and you could not hear the actual program.
-Wi-Fi that cut in and out and made it very hard for the lady to do her homework or for me to get any decent TV on Hulu since after all the TV doesn't cut it.
-Staff that made it a point to act like they were doing us a favor by trying to find us a King Size bed when it was what we reserved weeks ago and we were there at 3 p.m. sharp for check in even though they wouldn't take us until 4 and claimed they had no rooms with Kings in them, finally finding one like they were helping US out....helping us would have been fixing the TV.
-An elevator that is so small I think I am in a closet and it closes on me when I try getting in knocking everything out of my hands during check out, come on install a human sensor and a safety sensor, my shoulder still hurts!
-having to pay extra to park our car when we are already paying pretty high price for what we got.

I guess bugs would have clinched it but for now

    2 Stars

I wish I had two extra hands so I could give this place 4 thumbs down!!  Rooms were stinky and musty, the carpet was damp. I know it's the beach but really? Oh and can't forget the best part, we got thrown out at 4 a.m. for a case of mistaken identity! Yes it really happened and there were 8 witnesses to attest to it. Still tried to charge us for the entire weekend, disputed that and the charges disappeared but way too much hassle for such a crappy motel. never again will we stray from the catamaran.

It is right on the beach.  Decent rates.  Ample parking.  A bit dirty.  Older rooms.   Whatever...

WTF more do you really need?  I mean...really?

If there is vacancy...on the beach...from a reasonably respected national chain...for less than the price of an expensive call girl you should book it.

I am really impressed with this hotel. I was a little nervous about staying here because the price was pretty reasonable for a hotel ON THE BEACH and wondered if this would be one of those places where they figure you'll be so happy you're at the beach that you'll put up with anything. Not so!

The room description said I had was a "partial ocean view" room and that's what I had. There was  a little balcony off of my room and if I craned my head over the railing, I could see the ocean. The best thing is that I could sit with the sliding door open and listen to the ocean and feel the cool breezes as I sat in my room (working!). The room was clean; the interior was in good shape. I am generally allergic to hotel rooms, because of built up dust and mold, but not this one.

My room came with a refrigerator and a microwave. There is also high-speed wireless Internet access for free that is actually FAST! It's faster than my (supposed 6Mbit) connection at home (which may be due to the fact that I wasn't sharing the connection with my husband playing Final Fantasy and his friend playing World of Warcraft).

I did not come during spring break, so  my stay was nice and quiet. It seemed to be mostly families and not party-goers like one might expect in Pacific Beach. Also, there's card-key access to all interior spaces (including pool and hot tub), so I felt pretty safe that random folks weren't wandering around the hotel.

Shoot, everything was nice about this hotel in a Best Western sort of way. It was nice, but not fancy. It was clean. The staff was friendly and helpful.  If I am in San Diego again, this hotel will be on the top of my list.

I loved my stay here. The hotel is right on the beach and when we checked in we were upgraded to a partial ocean view room, which was great. From the balcony, looking left, we had a fantastic view of the ocean. The staff was very knowledgeable and polite. I loved the little cafe in the lobby for breakfast. I would definitely stay here again.

My first time here was, umm, 1982, I think, back when I was a teen.  We stayed a couple of times back then (82 and 84, I think).  For nostalgia's sake, I decided to take my family there, and spend a long day at the beach.  I had my doubts about the condition of the hotel after 25 years.

Check in was a breeze, room was ready early, and no problems.  I went for the ocean view, with kids for free in same room.  Not super unreasonable, price-wise, but you do definitely pay for the view.  And the view was totally worth it!  The sunset on Saturday was spectacular!  I wonder if they are all this gorgeous?

As for the condition of the hotel, I must say, I was pretty impressed.  I didn't use the pool or spa, but they looked in good condition.  Carpet in the hallways was a little worn, but the rooms were clean and well kept.  Our bed was starting to show it's age, but wasn't uncomfortable.  The bathrooms were spotless.  Microwave, mini-frig, coffee maker all seemed in good working condition.

Some of the negatives?  Spring break was still going on, as was apparent from the parties above and below.  Nothing outrageous (no gunshots, right?), and they didn't keep me awake for very long.  Price is higher then I'd like to pay, but then again, location and view were worth it, as well.

I am not sure about the other reviews on Yelp but when I stayed at The Blue Sea Lodge last weekend I was treated like royalty.  My party and I reserved a room with a partial view and when we showed up the front desk informed us that we had received a comp. upgrade to a full ocean view! The room was perfect with a spectacular view which literally rivaled any I have seen.  There was also a lot of action on the beach; it was the weekend, which made for some great people watching. The staff, in a word, was fantastic.  They were accommodating and friendly making sure we were taken care of throughout our stay.  Thanks Viri, Melissa, Cesar, and everyone else who made us feel welcome.

I also wanted to mention that prior to making my reservation I went to check out the hotel reviews for Blue Sea on Yelp (I am a Yelp Junkie).  The reviews were mixed some good and some bad but none of them were very recent.  Because of this I jumped over to Trip Advisor which is much more up to date.  No offense Yelp but when it comes to Hotels I think Trip Advisor may have a leg up on you.  My advice to anyone who is planning on visiting Pacific Beach; do not judge The Best Western Blue Sea Lodge by what you read here alone.  Review some other sights, make some phone calls, and then make the right decision reserve a room at The Blue Sea Lodge!

This hotel is ON the ocean.  Prices, comparatively speaking were very reasonable.  Booked through a third party (who somehow lost my reservation), but the girl at the front desk was kind enough to not only re-book us at the rate we were given from the third party, but also upgrade our room.  We got an ocean front suite, bedroom, two bathrooms, living room, small kitchen, and balcony on the boardwalk for $116.50 on a Saturday night.  You can't really beat that.  Hottub is open til 10, and there is a pool as well.  This isn't a fancy, luxurious hotel, but definitely nice, clean and pefectly located in Pacific Beach.  Parking is $17 overnight in their lot, but if you're lucky enough to find a spot in the middle of the two streets, you can leave your car there for free for 48 hours (really, where else can THAT happen... we got really lucky with one of those spots!).  In a good spot to walk to several restaurants, and the Mission Bay area restaurants/bars/amusement part are an easy mile walk south down the boardwalk.  Would definitely stay here again.

I hate giving such low ratings, but this place just rubbed me the wrong way.  I booked this place because I realize that it is right on the beach and pretty reasonably priced for the location.  Given that, I still expect a sense of comfort when I'm in my room.

When we first arrived at 3pm, we were told that check-in is at 4 (ok, that's fine ... I guess I was mistakened).  Then we came back at 4 and was told that they don't have a standard king even though that is what I booked about a month prior.  After asking the front desk why this can happen she went to the back office and came back and said "Oh, we might have a standard king for you" ... as if she was doing US a favor!

When we arrived to the room, the key cards didn't work!

The room smelled musty and had a damp feeling all over.  The t.v. made this loud buzzing sound everytime you turn it on that you can't even hear the show.  Wi-fi only worked if you sat at the desk and no where else in the room!!  Worst part of the entire room was the shower ... we coined it the "razor shower."  The water was spitting out at such a high velocity that you feel like you are being hosed down in prison!!  I tried for 5 minutes to see if I can adjust the pressure, but no luck.

I would not recommend staying here.  If you want to be in Pacific Beach go try somewhere else.  I don't know if they are any better, but this place is a total wreck.  I am staying in Downtown next time.

Alright, so my Grandmother & Aunt came down to San Diego to visit for a few days. I was surprised to find out that they had booked a room in PB, since that is such a notorious area for 18-21 yr "Young" party-goers. I offered to look for another location, but they insisted it would be fine. Their room was a few doors down from the tiny elevator that felt like it was going to go out at an given moment. Once in the room we discovered that there is no adjustment inside of the mini-refrigerator, the screen door was rusted and took some time to open and close, it smelled musty (I had to bring them candles) & to top it off...the ceiling light came on every single hour throughout the night & woke them up...not to mention they couldn't sleep also because of the partying people in the rooms around them. The positives are that the manger tried his best to be accommodating & the pool is right on the water. The sunsets there are amazing. I have stayed in my share of hotels & this one resembles one of the mistakes I booked in the past around the ghetto. If it weren't right on the beach, I don't think anyone who is well enough off to travel & in their right mind would stay here.

I loved it here because it was on the board walk. It was very nice since we didnt have to find parking to go to the beach. We slept with the windows open to hear the waves crashing on the beach and then had our morning cigarettes on the porch were we could see the beach from. Nothing like smoking a cancer stick while breathing in cool, somewhat fresh air! Absolutely lovely.

Not the best interior, but it wasn't horrible at all. You do have to consider the place to be a little "dampy," for lack of a better term, since it's right on the beach and the air is moist. So I couldn't expect the place to be absolutely dry and fresh smelling.

My wife & I stayed 2 nights here.  The front desk girls & manager were very helpful.  They upgraded us to a full 'ocean view room' with king size bed from a 'partial ocean view room', an unexpected surprise.  Our room was on the 3rd (top) floor away from the pool area (we wanted a quite room).  A fun location right on the beach with many shops to visit, ice cream & other food available near by.  The building does show its age & could use some touch-ups, but over all it is o.k.  The ocean salt water takes a toll on everything near the beach, so no surprise that it would show some wear.  I would recommend others to stay here, we enjoyed our stay here at the Best Western Plus Blue Sea Lodge.

we loved the location. The rooms were clean enough considering its a family beach hotel.  We had a "partial view room" and only could see ocean if out on our balcony.  so if that's important to have a nice view get one of the rooms with full ocean view.  The staff was super helpful and friendly and gave us coupons for Seaworld that saved some $.  The room doesn't come with breakfast but there's a nice small cafe you can get bagels, breakfast burritos for a decent price and charge to your room.

A bit disconcerting! I recently booked a two night stay at this property and received confirmation through booking.com . When I went to confirm my reservation and let them know that I would be checking in late, they said they didn't have my reservation. I told them that I was looking at the confirmation in my email as I spoke to them. The person on the phone said they would look into it and get back to me. They called back and said my reservation had been cancelled. I explained that I didn't cancel the reservation so asked them who did. The person on the phone said that he wasn't allowed to comment any further and asked if I would like to speak to their general manager and I said yes. He told me that the reservation had been cancelled because the price was invalid. I asked him why he hadn't notified me that it had been cancelled for which he had no answer. I explained to him that he also cancelled my friend's reservation which was booked through venere.com . If I had not called to confirm my reservation I would have arrived at the hotel at midnight and not had a room and been left to scramble around San Diego looking for rooms for the six people making the trip (including two small children). The reservation was made on 4/23 and I called on 5/5, why was there no phone call or email to say that the reservation had been cancelled. After speaking to booking.com , I was told that the reservation was cancelled by the hotel and that they are not allowed to do that. I am still waiting for booking.com or the hotel to find a solution to the problem!

This hotel relies on the fact that it is located right on the beach-front. The room was not particularly clean and not spacious at all.  The carpet was disgusting! I bathed my kids and had to wash their feet after they walked barefoot on the carpet for a few minutes. Disgusting! There is no tub. Just a shower. The pool was nice but it was definitely crowded. We had kids but there were a lot of people there that were a not loud and ready to party. Not worth the price. The Best Western in Old Town SD is a lot cleaner and well-kept. You pay for an upscale experience you definitely do not get.

If you plan to spend your vacation in the water, this is the place to be! Fork over the cash for the ocean front room, it's a million dollar view. If you're not in an ocean front room you may as well stay at a motel down the street. Rooms are sanitary/functional but you can tell they've seen many Summers of sandy feet. If you want an upscale, luxurious beach getaway... look elsewhere.

Ocean front room- has a kitchenette with bar stools, bring your own groceries rather than eating out every meal. Downside is you can't sleep-in because of the bicyclists dinging their bells below. Fun for people watching. We spent hours up on the balcony just watching everyone go by. I was wary that the hotel would be full of drunk college partiers. But in the ocean front rooms we weren't disturbed by any.

Beach- best beach in SD for intermediate ocean swimmers. Tractor clears the smelly seaweed off the sand every morning. Waves are mellow, good for boogie boarding, floating around. Not known for it's surfing though. Saw some parents just sitting on their balcony and watch their boys running around in the water from there.

We were easily able to walk to the bars/clubs from this hotel.

Great restaurants and activities right on the boardwalk. There's a snack shack next door, good pancakes. Also, make reservations at The Green Flash further down.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the hotel, the service, and the amazing value for a hotel directly on the beach - will definitely stay here again! If you're looking for The Four Seasons, this isn't for you. If you want a great value on the beach, with a little more to offer than your average beach motel, you'll love this place.

I recently got married and was looking for a room block for our wedding guests with one specific requirement: the hotel must be right on the beach (versus on the bay). This was the only real hotel (not a motel) that we found along the boardwalk that was a decent price. There are a few higher end hotels but we didn't think our guests would pay $300+ for a hotel room each night! We were a little skeptical to book this place given that Best Westerns don't have the highest quality reputation, but I'm so glad we did! We went and looked at the rooms before hand, thanks to the manager, and they are kept so clean, are very spacious, and there are so many affordable partial ocean view and ocean view rooms with private balconies and beautiful views!

Our guests just loved the location and the amenities of the hotel - they're simple, but it's a step up from all the other motels on the boardwalk and the true draw is the prime beach location. I highly recommend staying here!

    The hotel:
The Value; great price for what you get
Location: on the beach/boardwalk! Most rooms come with a view. We had an ocean view room and could hear the waves crashing right outside our door. Tons of dining options within a short walk (check out Woody's on the boardwalk!)
Pool and hot tub - with an ocean and boardwalk view - great for people watching if you want to laze around and feel like you're at the beach, without actually leaving the hotel.
Parking lot - it's a steep $18/night! We were able to negotiate this down with our room block, but that's a lot if you ask me for a single guest to pay. Plenty of parking though...on the beach...awesome.
On-site café: this is nothing fancy but you can buy coffee and simple breakfast and lunches here.
Lobby: Again, nothing fancy, but there are plenty of tables and chairs, water, free cookies in the afternoon, and free wi-fi in the lobby area.
Free wi-fi! Hard to find these days!
Service: As good as it gets. Everyone was incredibly prompt and friendly, and very knowledgeable about the area.

    The area:
Awesome. Right in the heart of Pacific Beach and a quick walk to Mission Beach/Belmont Park area. Walking distance to all the bars, restaurants, shops, etc. but far enough away that there's also peace and quiet. There are other hotels even closer to the "PB Strip" but my fear was that they'd be too loud (i.e. the Ocean Park Inn looked a little nicer but it's surrounded by bars on three sides!).

    The rooms:
Again, very clean and spacious. Most rooms come with a fridge and mini kitchen area, and the usual TV, safe, etc. Quiet!! This is a huge perk in this area!

ABOUT OUR ROOM BLOCK EXPERIENCE: We worked with Jennifer Cruz, the Group Sales Director, and could not have been more pleased with her help and attention to detail. She was such a pleasure to work with! If you book a room block here, you won't regret it! She emailed me an updating rooming list every week, upgraded us from a standard room to an ocean view SUITE (we were so excited!!), helped us coordinate the welcome bags for our out of town guests to ensure they'd be given to everyone on our room block list, proactively offered to make a welcome sign in the lobby using the logo we used in our wedding program, was there when my husband and I checked in to give us ear plugs since she knew we were worried about the noise, and even gave us a little present on our wedding night to thank us for all the business! What a great experience working with her, and staying at the hotel.

    Great Pacific Beach hotel.

    - roomy rooms
    - pool
    - spa
    - near restaurants
    - ocean views
    - near nightlife (college nightlife)
    - coffee bar

The rooms are a bit pricey but I really couldn't find any other hotel ON the beach, plus there was a group of us.

    Would totally stay here again!

The rooms are nice and clean, pretty standard for a Best Western chain. However, this particular Best Western is quite pricey since it is located right on the beach on the PB boardwalk. Don't get me wrong, the location is great. It is walking distance to all of the nightlife on Garnet.
BUT in my opinion, you have two better options in the area.
    1. Stay at place 2 blocks away from the beach. You'll still be right in the middle of all the action and still really close to the beach and you'll pay MUCH less.
    2. If you are going to pay these prices, you might as well pay SLIGHTLY more and stay in one of the waaay nicer plush hotels on the beach.

    This review is long overdue!
My anniversary was back in May and like a dummy, I used CList to book a beach house for the weekend. Totally got scammed out of hundreds of dollars.  I used to work for BW Corporate in PHX and knew there were some nearby so I called and explained the situation to Michelle.  She felt really bad and told us to come over and she would hook us up with a good rate.  We got a really nice corner room for a very reasonable rate and it totally saved our weekend. Every time we passed she was so friendly and really awesome!  Not only that, the 2nd night I explained that it was our anniversary and she had saved the weekend and she was like "oh my gosh, why didn't you say so?"  As soon as I got back to the room, the phone rang and she told me to come back down to the front desk.  She gave us a bunch of coupons and vouchers and stuff to local restaurants and was just over and above what you would expect and totally made things better.  I know this review is more about the staff than the hotel, but hey, what good is a hotel with crappy staff? The hotel was great!  The staff was incredibly great!  Couldn't ask for anything better!
    Thanks so much

I would NEVER recommend this hotel to anyone. Upon arrival we were informed that there would be an $18.00 fee for each parking space. They did not state that it was a daily fee and therefore we incurred another $120.00 to our bill. Also, at checkout we were told that we had a $250.00 fee for smoking in our room despite the fact that we requested a non-smoking room and had a baby and expectant mother in our party. They could not provide evidence but insisted they couldn't remove the charge. After two hours of arguing and only after calling the police did they agreed to remove the "smoking" fee. Additionally, the coffee maker didn't work and when we told the office they said "Oh sorry", but didn't attempt to fix it. The cleaning staff did an excellent job, but unfortunately they don't manage the hotel. It's a shame that this business is able to have such a negative impact on a family holiday. If I was capable of giving no stars I would!

I checked Yelp before staying here & was misled by good reviews.  My husband & I checked out after 3 hours.  Our 1st room overlooked the public restroom & on the roof were empty wine bottles, sleeping bags, & clothing items.  The room we were moved to was dark & dirty.  The bathroom smelled like mildew.  The whole facility was run down & though it was on the beach, it was a dirty, congested area.  We forfeited our 1st nights $236.00 room & checked into another hotel.

Fantastic location, but that comes with a big price with few perks. There is no continental breakfast...all they have in the lobby is apples and flavored water. The fridge is ridiculously small...so bring an ice chest.  The hotel is completely smoke free, so you have to smoke in the parking lot. Parking is $18 additional a night and you have never seen such tight spaces. I'm sure I'll leave here with a couple of dents. Internet was sporatic at best. Don't expect much from this hotel except great beach access. This was my second year coming and we won't be back again.

Came here on a January weekday for a little fun in the Sun, away from Seattle.  This was the only hotel with an available beach view that didn't cost a fortune.   The furniture was very early 1990's gawdy, but the bed was very comfortable and they had a big shower.  But, I don't think they use much softener on the towels.  I might bring my own if I am ever back here.  The first couple nights it was pretty peaceful, but on our last night I think a bunch of guys came to watch the playoffs in a hotel room?  Non the less, they were very loud.

There is a heated pool and a hot tub.  We spent the day out of the hotel, and by the time we got to the hotel the hot tub was overrun by an older crowd.  The pool & hot tub close at 10pm, so we didn't get a chance to check it out.  But on the positive, it's right on the beach.  It was nice to open our back door & look out or just walk out to take a stroll on the beach.  There are lots of little food places & shops around here.  It was also fun to house look at all the amazing vacation homes on the beach.  If you don't mind walking, take half a day to explore Pacific Beach.

One thing that really shocked us was that the maid threw away EVERYTHING.  Any of the hotel provided shampoo, conditioner, & soap was thrown away and replaced with new ones (we thought it was very wasteful).  They also threw away all of our lose paper, including the wifi password and Coupons for the zoo!

Pros:  The room was nice.  Cons:  Parking is a problem.  It is so congested that even though I was a paid guest with a parking pass I had difficulty finding a parking place after returning from dinner.  Being charged $18 per night for a hotel already costing $200 + per night added insult to injury.   Also, another downside was my room wasn't ready when I attempted to check in (at 4:00 in the afternoon).  Probably will try somewhere else next time.

I am writing an update to my review as we have spoken to the manager since the eviction event. The manager was very apologetic for our situation and did refund the fee's that were charged to our credit card. However, it is still very frustrating that we were kicked out of the hotel without a manager coming to the room after we had asked for one several times. This is Pacific Beach and to have a "no talking" policy at 10pm is a bit absurd. The manager stated that the room next to us complained three times but if that is the case than they have paper thin walls and if all it takes is one room complaining without management coming around than in my opinion this is not a system that should determine my fate at a hotel.  We didn't' have the TV on or any music after the first complaint. If they are trying to run a family friendly establishment than they are in the wrong beach town. When you are renting the nicest suite in the facility you expect to have a little leeway when it comes to having a good time. I wish I could claim we were rock star status and had a raging party, but the bottom line is we were way less rowdy than some of the other patrons staying at the same hotel and we left the room in great condition. I can understand if at 2am we were still up and "being loud" but all this went down before midnight. I do appreciate the manager being on top of the situation but I still believe the second night should have been refunded as it all came down to he said, she said. Even the cops were surprised this was all happening. Thank you Ruben for helping us and reaching out but I still would not suggest this hotel to a group of friends who are looking to have a good time. It is a very pretty hotel and nice amenities but unfortunately we were not able to use any of them.

This place is ran by an amazing, professional and efficient management team. My family and I are here for the week in san Diego from Boston. Due to new renovations, there were some issues in our room. The GM reached out to me personally and upgraded us to an ocean front view suite due to our issues we had previously. He personally checked in after. Can't believe how great this place is. Steps from the ocean. Beautifully decorated rooms with updated furniture and style. Can't wait to spend another 8 nights here in May 2015!

I loved my stayed here. The view from the balcony was mesmerizing. It was our anniversary and my now fiancé told them of his planned proposal for the weekend so they updated our room. The room was kept clean with decor that was very modern and chic. The staff members were very friendly and professional. I would definitely stay here again. Thanks a bunch blue seal beach hotel!!

Came here for a quick family getaway. Price was decent for a partial ocean-view room on a holiday weekend.

Rooms are not very modern, but they are comfortable and clean.

The cafe downstairs offers pastries, breakfast sandwiches and coffee drinks for a reasonable price.

    Overall, not a bad experience.

I arrived right about check-in time and was promptly helped by the girl working the front desk. She was super friendly and gave us a map and recommendations of places to go. She even told us to call her if we needed any other tips, since she lived in the area.

I booked an ocean view room, but at check-in, I was told we had been upgraded to a king suite. Score! The front desk gave us a decal for parking, which there is plenty of, and we were on our way.

The suite was nicer than I expected from a Best Western. There was a living room separate from the bedroom and both rooms had TVs. The bathroom was also a pretty good size. I was a little disappointed with the view, however. Although we technically still had an ocean view, our room was ground floor right next to the pool, so our view was really annoying people at the pool, and then the ocean. Still, we didn't come to SD to sit in our room the whole time, so it wasn't a big deal.

What you are really paying for here is the location! It was literally a 15 second walk from our room to the beach. You can't beat that! If you're going to SD for the beach, this is definitely a great place to stay. Plus, it's right in the middle of Pacific Beach and Mission, so you aren't too far from anything.

And for your frequent travelers who use Hotels.com , you can use your free nights rewards to book here!

We stay at this hotel every time we're in San Diego. The location is what keeps us coming back. The beach, shops and restaurants are all within walking distance which is a huge plus since parking can be quite the chore in PB. The hotel is nice and always clean. It is a bit pricy but because of the convenience, and the private balcony with the spectacular view of the beach, its worth it to us.

We stayed here last weekend along with some good friends for a weekend trip, and had a great experience! First, the hotel is in a great location...you can walk to the pool area, step out a door and you're on the beach! There are good restaurants, coffee and snack places all within walking distance.

The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the rooms were clean, comfortable, very nice and had plenty of towels on hand, both for the bathroom and the pool. Parking does cost an additional per-night fee. Amenities included a microwave, mini-fridge and a Keurig coffee maker. There are vending machines and a small snack store in the lobby. There's also a game area in the lobby with old 1980s arcade games you can play for free! Our rooms were on the third floor, and despite a large party of high school/college kids who were also at the hotel that weekend, our rooms were quiet and peaceful. And the balconies had a great view of the ocean.

While the hotel doesn't offer food other than snacks, there's a decent seafood restaurant next door and some very good other restaurants within just a few minutes' walk (I recommend the Truckstop for breakfast, it was great.)

We had such a good stay we decided to extend our trip one more day. We were not only given a very generous discounted room rate for the extra night, but the clerk gave us a $50 gift card if we come back before Feb. 12.

All in all, outstanding value and a great weekend stay. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful stay here.  From the first moment we checked in, the staff was hospitable and accommodating.  We were instantly upgraded to a very large, ocean front room.  It was obviously recently renovated with nice and stylish furnishing and a very, very comfortable bed.  We never used our car during the stay because eateries, activities, the beach and more are steps out the door.  PLUS they had philosophy products in the bathroom--- YESS..

    Great stay.

Despite all the 4 and 5 star reviews this hotel is NOT a 4 or 5 star hotel.  The building is dated and the décor is mediocre at best.  However there is something to be said about location.  As they say, location, location, location.  This place is built on Mission Beach.  You can be on the beach from your hotel room within seconds.  The beach is clean and provides a beautiful view all day long; especially at sunset.  There are numerous restaurants within walking distance in every direction.  The night life is plentiful.  The staff is friendly and helpful. Parking is reserved for guests and easy. Rooms are equipped with decent HD TV's.  Beach towels are provided.  Night time noise is relatively quiet for sleep.  Overall, I would not hesitate to stay here again.  I had a great time.

This hotel was awesome!  I have nothing bad to say about it.  I booked through hotels.com and we got a decent deal on the room for two nights.

A lot of hotels disappoint you when you show up and they don't look exactly like the pictures... but not this one!  They were better than the pictures! There is a pool and a hot tub facing the beach!  It is so beautiful!  It is closer than you think to the boardwalk and makes easy access to get in and out on the beach side.

When we checked in the room wasn't ready until 4, which was fine.  There is plenty to do around there! We parked our car for two nights (18 dollars a night) and there were plenty of spots for the guest parking.  This was a little steep I thought but worth it in the area, as there is no on street parking to be found! When we checked in at 4 they had upgraded our room to an ocean facing view, which won my heart! It was breathtaking.  We were able to wake up in the morning, drink out keurig coffee (provided in room) and watch the surfers, and the roller bladers skate by.

This is a great place to book any vacation.  There is something for everyone whether you want to spend time on the beach, enjoy good restaurants, swim in the ocean, go on walks, etc.  It is all within reach when you stay here and you don't have to drive anywhere! I WILL be back!

Checked-in @10p on TH 3/27, and the front office gal was rather stranger, no life at all... Almost like it was my fault she had to be working that day. I had req to have 2 rooms next to each other since 1 from my party was going to alone,That req she was half way met. When we went up to our rooms, yes the rooms were next to eachother with a wall between. So I went back down to request rooms NEXT to eachother where we can open the connecting doors. The front office gal proceeded to say that those doors don't open, when in fact the connecting door in 401 did open, weird right? So that made no sense to us, @ that point it was whatever. The next day, we were hanging out in room 402, when a water leak began from the light in front of the door, literally waterfall status from the light, apparently the upstairs room had maintenance working on a leak that was now affecting our room.. We called the front desk, req to be moved, they said they were sold out but will see what they can do. UHMm? We told them we'll be in 401 while they fixed the problem. After almost 20 mins, they finally called us and said 402 has stopped leaking and can be used now. How did they expect us to go back into room that had a waterfall leak? No thanks. So then 406 became "available" 10 mins later. Will I be staying there again? No.

P.s. if you need ICe, the machine is outside, in the parking lot and you need your room key... So always carry your room key...

All the staff are friendly, professional and helpful. Our partial view queen room balcony is directly facing the pool, boardwalk and sand. Our room is very spacious, well kept, has clean white bedsheets and towels, contains one queen sofa bed, microwave, mini fridge, safe, ice bucket and a table & chair set with flat screen tv. It has AC but we kept out balcony screen door open to breathe fresh ocean air. Heated pool and jacuzzi are both clean and well maintained. Fresh towels are available in the pool area. They offer paid parking in their garage under the building otherwise public parking is available outside in the middle of the street if you happen to find one & it is good for 48 hrs free parking. Bathroom is narrow but clean, with glass door shower. Carpet outside and inside the room are clean. However upon our 2 day stay the people who worked outside to maintain a clean pool area and garden started working too early like 7am, making loud noises while
    sweeping and dragging the pool
loungers and chairs, scraping and raking off leaves and freshly cut branches on the floor. It was really loud because it woke us up past 7am and we can't sleep anymore. You can see managers and supervisors roaming around making sure everything is taken cared of. Will definitely stay here again. This place is clean, presentable and is so close to the sand, shore and most food places around it. They also offer AAA card discount if you own one. There is a room where it has a vending and ice machine and also a coin washer and dryer.

ProTip: Stay in the North building if possible. It doesn't have the same weird smell as the South and has better views.

Cons: The South building has a weird smell. Be sure to rinse off after a dip in the hot tub. I neglected to do so and had a funk of wet dog after.

Location, location, location! This is an older, but well-maintained hotel. It's nothing fancy, but the location cannot be beat. I've stayed here five or six times, and will continue to when I am in San Diego.

The desk staff, especially Caesar, Sam, Bob & Michelle are all fantastic. Bob even remembered me when I returned three month later. The rooms have always been clean and the beds very comfortable. Parking is $17/night, but in a secure garage, and that's pretty good for Pacific Beach.

The hotel doesn't have a restaurant, but it's right at the corner of Pacific Beach Dr & Mission, so it's surrounded by numerous restaurants, bars, a Ralph's and not too far away fro Trader Joe's.

The main draw of this place is that it's right on the beach, and all the rooms have a balcony.  When you book, there is an option for "partial ocean view" or "full ocean view". I've stayed in both, and would say that the full ocean view rooms are not worth the extra $$ (sometimes they are $300+/night). "Partial" view means you can see the ocean from the balcony but not from say, the bed.  Whichever room you stay in, you can walk right  onto the sand, so save your money, and go for partial!

    What an amazing place!
I brought my bride here this weekend for a brief getaway before our honeymoon. We stayed in one of the King Suites. Two balconies, two rooms, two TVs, and two bathrooms.
This room is literally just above the boardwalk. The view is stupendous. We love it here.
Cons: the TV reception is not very clear. Yup, that's the only thing I could complain about.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. Free 80's arcade games in the spacious lobby for the kids, and free access to two large Mac's in the lobby too.

Spent an awesome 3 day 2 night get away with my husband, teenage son, and 6 year old granddaughter. We loved it! The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a 2nd floor room overlooking the pool and ocean. We could watch the kids swim from the balcony. Just steps to the beach. Teenager enjoyed skateboarding up and down the walkway along the beach. 10 minutes to Sea World. I'd highly recommend for a relaxing kid friendly get away. Check in and check out was super easy. Modern even if it looks old from the outside. Rooms are small, but have a big comfortable king bed and an Ocean Front view. Modern bathroom, hair dryer, nice showerhead, big fluffy pillows, refrigerator, microwave, safe, flat screen, ice bucket and plenty of usb ports to charge electronics. People watching is an added plus from your balcony. Pay the extra to get ab ocean front room. Staff friendly. No complaints about the accommodations here. This place is right on the beach, which is fantastic, and it's also really close to lots of bars and restaurants (though not so close that it's obnoxious). You're also straddling Pacific and Mission Beaches, so you can experience either one easily on foot. The room was very comfortably sized (especially just for me!), and I even had a balcony with a bit of an ocean view, which I totally wasn't expecting.

I was also really impressed with the service of the front desk staff. I arrived at the hotel hours before check-in time just looking to stow my luggage for a bit. Not only did they hold my luggage (as most if not any hotel will), they gave me a key card so that I could hang out at the pool if I wanted to prior to checking in. It was a small gesture but really stood out in my mind (and it was also helpful when I had a few hours to kill on the other end of the trip after checking out).

I would absolutely stay here again!

Can't get a better location to the beach and World Famous (my new favorite restaurant in SD) Front desk was very friendly and helpful. Housekeeping was noisy and talking loud while in the hallways and cleaning rooms.  Rooms were very nice and clean with updated decor being that it was just remodeled.  Bathroom was small, but shower was big and I like that they had Molton Brown products. I could also hear and feel people walking above me so make sure you request the top floor. Wifi is spotty too.  I felt like it was be named Blue Sea Beach MOTEL instead of Hotel.

We stayed here on a Thursday of March 2015, from Phoenix for a day. We're a family of four and we enjoyed it. This is highly recommended. We were allowed an early check in and it was a smooth one. We stayed at a 2nd floor room and it was a partial ocean view room. It was perfect for us. It was my first time staying in a oceanside hotel and I was not disappointed. There was a parking fee of $18. There are 2 options, the basement and the outside. The basement parking looks like a dive for us so we opted outside which was not crowded when we arrived at 11 am. If you parked outside though, you need to drag your luggage up a few flight of stairs. Not too bad for us. If your parked in the basement, there is an elevator there but some other reviews say the space is very small and it's scary to park if you have a big vehicle. There are some free parking spaces in the front of the hotel but boy it was full and I can't wait to dive in the bed after the travel. The room was nice. First thing I did was take a picture of the Pacific beach from the balcony, sit there and enjoy the ocean. The balcony was a bit cramped. It can only accommodate 2 chairs. You can't party there. The room has a large floor to ceiling mirror which made it look and feel huge. It was a good sized room with the 2 queen beds. It came with a microwave, refrigerator,  vault, hair dryer, and a good wifi connection. The carpet was a little sticky maybe from being close to the ocean so just wear your slippers. The sheets are clean, the bathroom was clean.
The hotel was like steps from the ocean. The Pacific beach is close to Mission beach. There are a lot of people there but you can still find a spot. My kids love the freezing water. I dipped my foot and decided,  it wasn't for me. My kids though spent a good 2 hours in that water. When they were done, they spent some minutes in the heated pool of the hotel.
There were pool towels provided for guests. That was nice. The next morning, I drank my coffee from the balcony and we went for a walk by the beach. We loved it. It was so relaxing. There were a lot of small places to eat there so you won't get hungry. Across the hotel was the World Famous (that's the name) seafood place which they say had long lines of people waiting to get in. I hate lines so I skipped that. That resto had a good review though.
The check out is 12 noon and it was hassle free. Overall, I would stay here again. I loved the sound of that ocean when I opened the balcony door for a bit and I just lay in my bed.

I have been staying at the Blue Sea for 5 years now and it is definitely my home away from home that also has an ocean.  I had a business program running in La Jolla for over 3 years and stayed at the Blue Sea as often as twice a month,  At some point or another, I've probably stayed in every room in the property.

Every last single visit has been absolutely fantastic.  No matter what the circumstances, the staff has been great, nothing was ever a problem.

I have highly recommended the Blue Sea to my friends headed to San Diego.   It's such a short drive to downtown, I'm much happier staying at the beach.

In short, the Blue Sea is absolutely fantastic and I'd never thing of staying anywhere else in the San Diego area.

Pros; Location, location, location. Comfy bed, friendly front desk. Reasonable rates. Cool laid back Southern Cali vibe. Close to restaurants, bar, liquor stores, pretty much anything you need is within walking distance.

Cons; Wi-fi was spotty. Poor lighting in bathroom. Pool was too cold for my tastes. While the front desk is friendly they would do their clients a better service if they would have more knowledge about local businesses and hangouts vs. the popular chains and touristy spots. Also, the front desk urged and arranged for us to use their 'preferred driver' who has a flat rate and ending up  charging us $10.00 more for a ride to La Jolla than a regular cabbie. We know this because we found our own cab back from exact location.

Few tips;  Don't go 5 blocks to Starbucks for coffee as the hotel told us. Woody's on the boardwalk has great coffee and its just a few minute walk- good breakfast too. Oscar's Mexican Seafood for lunch - it's on Emerald and Mission Bay. Killer authentic Mex food.

If you like a resort type hotel with full service this is not it. It's a bit loud out front but  we loved the action. Pacific Beach is a blast.

I really enjoyed our stay at the Blue Sea Beach Hotel, It was pretty centrally located within walking distance to bars, restaurants and the beach. We were on the lower level over looking the pool and the beach.

Pros: The beds and pillows were really comfy, the rooms were spacious and well maintained (just remodeled). They used high-end Philosophy products and gave you enough towels for the pool and showers.

Cons: The only thing that I didn't like was the shower was a little small and the lighting in bathroom was a little dim.

All in all our experience at this hotel was pleasant and we will be returning in the future!
