I stayed at this hotel this past weekend, on saturday night. I am so impressed. The beds are beyond comfy, and the free breakfast is the perfect way to begin your day on vacation. Overall, this place was so unbelievably comfortable, I don't know if it gets much better. lol. The location isn't directly in the center of town, but it's right off the freeway, and many hot spots are convenient to get to from here.

Unfortunately, the 2 and 3 star reviews did not apply, so I am giving a 1 star for this hotel. This hotel was the tournament hotel for both a club basketball and unrelated softball tournament.  So with that comes a lot of families with kids of all ages.  Both the families of the basketball and softball tournaments wanted to congregate in the lobby areas of the hotel. Unfortunately, the management did not like this, so they made up excuses of why we could not be anywhere on the first floor. They told one person from our group that we should have rented out one of the meeting rooms, but those closed at 10:00.  So, if you like a 10:00 cerfew, this is the place for you!

Was in town for some business and the travel agent booked me at this Courtyard for my Friday - Sunday visit.

The hotel is decent size and has many amenities to it.  Upon walking in you are greeted with a nice size entry area.  Decor here is like every Courtyard that I've been too, and they are always done with class.  They have a pretty nice large lounge area with bar and big restaurant to eat at that service breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The people at the counter are very nice and friendly.  I got my key and went to my room.  The place was busy as there was a ton of high school kids running around and must have been some sort of middle age women convention going on too.  I went to my room and have to say was a bit disappointed.  Even though the room was clean it was right next to the elevator and the hallway, so I did hear a lot of elevator noise and people walking back and forth.  The room was nice, but the layout was weird.  I usually like the bed facing the TV, unfortunately it was off to the side.  No flat screen TVs here, your regular 25 inch tube TV and speaking of which, for a business class room, not having a frig in the room is a big NO NO.  The desk was nice.  For the bathroom you have separate rooms for the sink and the shower and toilet.  They do have both free wireless and wired Internet but didn't have a chance to test it out.

The facilities are hit and miss here.  The gym and pool area is nice.  Nice new equipment in the gym and plenty of space.  The pool is a good size and they provide towels.  The business center should be called the business closet.  You really got to squeeze in there if you have more than 2 people.

The restaurant here is good.  They had a breakfast buffet there is a lot more than your basic hard boiled eggs and pastries they bought at Costco.  They had a good size options from eggs, potatoes, french toast, fruit, and looks like plenty fresh baked goods.

Location wise, best way to put it, this Marriott is not next door to anything, but if you have a rental, you're no more than about 30 minute drive to most major attractions.  Overall, I really wanted to like this place, but something was left missing.  I ended paying about $350 for a Friday - Sunday stay.  I would come back again, but it's just not at the top of the list of business hotels I've been to.  3 Stars for average and would meet most people's needs.

When you call Marriott this hotel is listed as San Diego Central. This is one of the nicest Courtyards I have ever stayed in. The front desk area and lounge were very brightly decorated and spacious. This was great because when the line gets long for check in I do not like to feel crowded or as if I am blocking the way with my luggage. The rooms were neat and had a flat screen television which made the room seem much bigger and left more counter space. The glasses were wrapped in plastic not paper and the room furniture included a couch and a chair. There were three computers and a color printer that had ink, toner, and a lot of paper! The staff was courteous and helpful. There are grocery stores and shopping centers located nearby and the highway entrance is located one stoplight to the left outside of the hotel. The only downside I saw was when I went to heat up food was that the microwave was very dirty. As neat as the snack and drinks for purchase section looked, I was surprised the staff was not cleaning the microwave. The exercise room was my favorite though because each cardio machine had a small television with a small selection of cable stations. There were also weights, towels and a water dispenser with cups. The gym looked out onto the pool and courtyard area so there was nice scenery to look at. The room was quiet and I slept soundly since there was not outside noise either from the youth baseball team located on my floor that was playing loud music earlier in the day or the traffic from the highway. When I did have to drive downtown, I did not have a fear of dealing with a large amount of traffic or getting lost it was a short drive. It was a great stay and though I only stayed one night I would definitely keep this hotel in mind when I return to San Diego.

It really wasn't nearby to anything, you need a car with this hotel.  There was a fun diner called Studio Diner yelp.com/biz/G6oOrrwtfm9… at the end of Spectrum and the other end was a Black Angus.  On the same road as Jack in the Box, HQ.
Pro's
Nice sized swimming pool, small jacuzzi
Great sized room and living room with pull out bed and fridge
Lobby had a stocked kiosk of refridgerated snacks to purchase
Outside secured, keyed access to get to the elevator easier.
Rooms were clean
Con's
In a suite, bedroom was next to the soda/ice machine so heard the machine motor and people getting ice and sodas all night
Wished the bedroom had a seperate door from the bathroom and vanity
Our floor always ran out of ice, had to do to the 1st floor to get ice

Great hotel in San Diego for a family. In the middle of zoo, beach and legoland. Great price, free parking and free internet. Pool was busy but we used it for our 3 year old. Had to drive to restaurants.

Just like any other Courtyard.  Located in an industrial area with not to many shops or restaurants around.  You have to drive to the other side of the freeway to where all the businesses are at.  Note: you earn more reward points by staying in a courtyard vs. other marriott establisments.

Modern and very clean! Awesome breakfast buffet but it is not complimentary. Best hair dryer in all the hotels I have been in.  Free Wi Fi and the room has an IPHONE docking station.

This was the worst hotel experience I have ever had.  The person who answered the phone to give directions had me driving back to downtown SD even though I was (according to my directions) right around the corner.  After 3  tries of her trying to direct me I called a different Marriott who agreed that that person had no business working there if she did not know where the hotel was.  It turns out it was the general manager I was talking to.  Terrible customer service.

This is a large property compared to other Marriott Courtyard hotels. The check-in experience was professional and efficient, yet I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff. My room was clean and well-maintained. I had a balcony overlooking a large outdoor pool and garden. The evening I spent there was quiet and peaceful.

Here's some advice for people who don't like their room. As soon as you look over the room and know it won't do, go back down to the desk and ask for another room. If you want a quiet room, tell the desk clerk that when you check in. If you want to be away from noisy kids, tell them "no kids nearby, please." The staff will do their best to accommodate you. To avoid hard feelings later, it is best to be up front at the beginning.

The hotel is located in a business park in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood of San Diego. You will need a car, because it is not close to any San Diego attractions. Further, there is no nearby convenience store or grocery store, so you have to stock up before you get to the hotel. The hotel compensates by having a full-service restaurant and bar. If you want a quiet hotel away from the hubbub of the San Diego Convention Center area, and you don't mind driving 15 minutes to downtown, this hotel with its big pool would be a good choice.

The most notable thing about this hotel for me was the little paper slip they put your room key card in. Here it opens out into a map of San Diego. I thought that was really cool!

This Courtyard has had a complete makeover since Jan 09!  You walk in, and you have to do a double-take to make sure you are in a Courtyard!  It is very slicked out, modern furniture, lighting and a gorgeous restaurant and the bar, that is my favorite!  The bartender, Duncan, he is such a genuinely nice guy and  and will go above and beyond to help you and make you feel comfortable!!  Then there is Rick, in the restaurant, he is so energetic and so passionate about the food, they both made me feel like I was cared for and very very important!!!
This Courtyard is literally in the same parking lot as the Spectrum, you could throw a rock at it!  If you are looking for a place to stay, for an event, business, or just a get away, come to the Courtyard Marriott Spectrum center, you will not be disappointed
The rooms are really nice, again this in not your normal

I will be honest.. the only thing i didnt like was that there was a gap under the door that let the light in and kept me up at night.. and the alarm clock was super bright as well.. But the staff was truely above and beyond helpful and nice.. So even though i had some trouble checking in (not the marriots fault) my experience here was good. I will come back to this hotel if i happen to be in the same area again.. Thanks Marriot..

I give the Marriott Corporation 4 stars but the Courtyard Marriott at Spectrum Center 5 stars.  Marriott Corp put the Courtyard in a tough spot by overbooking their hotel.  We arrived about 11:30 pm after a late flight.  I had made the reservation 6 weeks in advance and we ended up with a handicappable room.  It was that or they would put us up in another hotel.  At that late hour, no way.  We took the room and they offered to move us to another room the next day. We also found out that there were additional guests that arrived after us that didn't even get a room - period!  With the ciaos that evening, Deborah at the front desk was amazing.  She held her cool while dealing with the customers and the phones - all by herself.
Archie, the General Manager spoke with us the following day and was extremely kind and personable.  Cara at the front desk assisted us with directions and recommendations too. They made sure our luggage was transferred and gave us a great room with a balcony and view.
5 stars to Archie, Cara and Deborah for going above and beyond even with all the challenges Marriott Corp put in front of them.  Yes, we would definitely recommend this hotel to our friends, and yes, we plan on returning in the future!

As my group and I walked into this hotel, we were greeted by decent service and a nice layout. Little did we know that we would be accused of smoking in one of our THREE rooms. With absolutely no evidence, the management at this courtyard Marriott branch refused to hear our side of the story. They reversed "hookah" smoking charges to rooms that had charcoal burns on the carpet. However, they did NOT reverse our smoking charge. I hope that the management at this Marriott realizes that good customer service is the key to a successful business. Our group of friends will absolutely NOT be revisiting this hotel or any other Marriotts. Thank you for the terrible experience.

This place is in the middle of a pretty big and extra empty commercial area of san diego. Walked in and after staying in the gaslamp for more than a few nights, i was surprised to find an even more sleek and contemporary hotel lobby than that of the earlier establishments. lounge, nice little breakfast nook, sitting areas accompanied by book shelves and a small communal seating area with a tv. the front desk is actually comprised of 2 or 3 separate podiums and they have a large Go Board just to the side of that. a go board is an interactive television monitor displaying weather, current local events and top destinations on the area. didnt visit the pool or jacuzzi but from my mates i heard it was infested with highschoolers that were in town for sports tournaments.

rooms were nice, walls were a golden grey poupon color with one of the walls papered in a red lace organic pattern. large hd tv with a decent selection of hd channels. the bed was the best part*, magi*ough. aside from being about 10 miles from downtown and about 3 from pacific beach, this place doesnt really offer much other than being across the 163 from a great asian food community, convoy.

Hotel styling is contemporary and kept clean.  It is the best business traveler hotel in that area of town. Fitness area decent with a nice pool outside
The outdoor courtyard is great to hang out  in at the end of the day. 1/2 off happy hour specials in lounge area.

A near perfect stay. The night before I had been sick as hell with food poisoning and trapped in a miserable Best Western in Blythe Ca.

Arriving at this lovely property was like stepping into a Ritz Carlton after suffering at the Best Western in Blythe.

The room was very comfortable, decorations were soothing, bed was terrific.

Helpful staff, fantastic breakfast in the morning, great pool, had a terrific stay.

Well done Marriott Carlsbad, well done.

Very nice hotel, up to date, clean and comfortable. Pool is great and very big for a hotel pool. Only downside was that the pool towels were super tiny and they couldn't keep them stocked. None of the ice machines on the fourth floor worked, so we had to go down to the third floor every time we needed ice. We stayed as part of a soccer tournament, with older kids that didn't run through the hotel, but we're under control and respectful. The location wasn't the greatest, but we had to stay as a requirement of the tourney. There was security roaming in the halls so there were no incidents of disruption during our three night stay. Hotel seemed to be on top of it. Room service was decent, which is good considering there aren't a ton of dining options close by. Overall, we were appy with our stay.

Our stay at this hotel for 2 nights was absolutely perfect, I am NOT kidding. The staff is really nice and the food is amazing ! They pancakes and omelette was delicious and the portifino pasta with chicken was good too. We did NOT use the pool area so I can't speak on that. I would absolutely stay here again !

Wow.  This is as top-o-the-line as a Courtyard gets.  It has been recently remodeled, and has all the fancy stuff they're showing in their current commercials - massive touchscreen monitor in the lobby with access to touristy info, a fully-stocked and comfortable bar with a friendly barkeep, good selection of liquor, and nice new LCD HDTVs cranking out college football on a Saturday evening.  The rooms are immaculate and a new look for Courtyard.  The TVs are not only brand new LCD flatscreens, but actually provide HD programming - VERY rare in ANY hotel!  Free internet access is either via an RJ45 connection out of the wall at the desk (rather than those crappy old "modems" they used for years), or free wireless, which came through 5-bars-strong at our room location.  Parking is free (unlike the Marriott near Qualcomm Stadium, our reason for staying here rather than there) and there are some decent eats nearby (some fancy thing called "Yelp" helped us in that department, imagine that!).

I have only one minor gripe - the lighting over the sink is weak and no doubt some Al Gore-endorsed energy saving affair.  It makes shaving difficult (especially if you're shaving around a beard like Brak) because of lots of shadows and general poor lighting.  Very minor issue, not enough to knock a star off Brak's "fair and balanced" review.

Highly recommended and we'll stay here again next time we're in town.

Stayed here for a couple of days on a trip back to SD (having lived there for the better part of a decade before recently moving). The location's great since you're pretty much 10 to 15 min of everything you might want to go to, plus you've got easy access to the 163/805/52, all of which give you multiple options for getting to the same place.

As with most of the other Yelpers, I was (pleasantly) surprised by the furnishings and general ambiance of this Courtyard. I hate when cheap hotels try to dress themselves up as more expensive places (with matching prices to boot) and just end up looking like a cheap hooker rocking some couture. Check-in/out were super easy, the room was nice and quiet, bed was comfy, and mini-ref was a plus. Were it warmer out, I would have taken advantage of the pool and courtyard; there were some really nice cabana style furnishings outside that begged to be lounged on, drink in hand. Only minor quibbles were the wifi speed and small counter area around the bathroom sink. If you're feeling adventurous, Convoy is right nearby with a plethora of Korean/Japanese/Vienamese/Chinese eateries and grocery stores.

This is probably going to be my go to place whenever I'm back in town and don't want to spend to much, but don't want to slum it either.

This is a clean, upscale hotel in an otherwise hideous part of "Central San Diego," a term referring to the hotel's easy access to a generous assortment of the area's major highways (805, 52, 163, 15, 8).  The neighborhood in which the hotel looms is devoid of character; large office buildings with indecent expanses of parking lot dominate the immediate vicinity, but within a few miles drive is an Asian enclave with a plethora of Japanese markets and sundry shops, sushi joints, and the like.

Upon entering the lobby, I was confused at first because they've eschewed the traditional Hotel Check In Counter that usually stretches from one end of a lobby to the other, in favor of small individual kiosks that resemble a self-check-in station at the airport.  A well-dresed gentleman finally greeted me from behind one of the kiosks, as I exhibited all of the symptoms of disorientation:  stopping in the middle of the room, turning slowly around and around, then looking for the nearest person with some kind of hotel-staff-identifying feature.

Check-in was 100% painless thereafter, and I'd booked my room directly from Marriott to save $10 off the travelocity or expedia prices, plus received a AAA discount.  My king-sized bedroom was $134.

I had just as much trouble finding the elevator as I had identifying the desk clerk.  The elevator was hidden down a long hallway with multiple corridors that I explored one by one until finally seeing the familiar up/down button.  I was placed on the 4th floor, which was the quietest floor, but when I unlocked it my room was fucking FREEZING.  Someone had had the brilliant / malevolent idea to set the temperature at 46 degrees.  Ouch.

The room was immaculate, except that they don't appear to move the furniture when they vacuum, which I discovered while doing some sit-ups later in the evening.  The bathroom was quite small but included the now-requisite curved shower curtain, which expands the shower area considerably.  Every time I'm in a hotel, I wish I were that guy - the one who invented the curved shower bar - because he's probably a billionaire now.    The toiletries were nothing special.

On the hotel check-in site, you can request specific types of extra pillows - I chose extra feather pillows, which made my night's sleep one of the most comfortable I've had in a hotel.  I believe there were four feather pillows, plus two 'normal' plush pillows, on the bed when I arrived.

The Television Set was, well, a Television Set.  It was big, and had about 20 channels, most of which featured reality shows about people with below-average intelligence.

When I woke the next morning, the bill had been slipped under the door and I left the key in my room.  Remarkably easy, remarkably efficient, and remarkably uneventful.  That's pretty much what I look for in a business-class hotel, and the Courtyard Marriott delivered.

It's unclear to me why this place has so many positive reviews. The staff have been fantastic during my stay, but there are no other positives about this hotel.

Major Problems:
(1) The parking lost is shared with many other businesses and is a mess at night. Most of the parking immediately near the main lobby/concierge desk entrance is marked NO HOTEL PARKING.

(2) The "renovation" did not add any luxury or comfort features and many of the main fixtures are obsolete or in need of repair. For instance, my air conditioning unit was extraordinarily loud, at least 20 years old, and would wake me up every hour when it turned on and shook my bed 15 feet away with severe vibrations.

(3) For you business travelers: the free "high speed" internet is false advertising. It may have been high speed in 1995, but my cell phone is a lot faster making it utterly pointless.

(4) There is a limited selection of TV and now PPV.

(5) No room service.

(6) Worlds slowest elevators.

(7) Loud freeway and busy street adjacent location.

(8) Paper thin walls that do nothing to prevent you from hearing your neighbors: intimate moments, screaming child, or even every word of a soft-spoken conversation.

(9) The surrounding area is not even remotely nice or close to any major attractions. But if you like run-down businesses, strip clubs, and fast food - you will be all set.  It's close to the freeway - but it's not actually close to anywhere you want to take the freeway.

(10) It's an average deal at best. You can often find a nicer hotel downtown in the same price ballpark.

(11) The beds are rigid and uncomfortable, and the linens stink of chlorine.

The staff are the only redeeming quality, earning this hotel 2 stars instead of 1.

Ok, this may sound weird but I'm actually only reviewing their lunch buffet. Although, I have traveled around SoCal quite a bit for work and have stayed at many Marriott brand hotels....and I have to say the renovation they've done here looks great.

But as far as the buffet is concerned...not a bad price and the food is much better than your regular hotel slop. The menu has a different theme each day of the week. (i.e.-Italian, Mexican, etc.) You can get quite full for around $10. The selection isn't huge by any means but it's decent considering you're eating in a hotel lobby restaurant. So if you work in the area and you're not feeling like eating Asian food or fast food...this may be a good break from the norm.

Stayed here on the Saturday night before the AFC half marathon in August.

Great service from the staff, everyone was so friendly and helpful. Room was clean and modern as was the hotel itself. Actually really liked the bath products they provided. Room had a nice couch and working area, flat screen TV, and fairly comfy bed. Note to ladies: the hair dryer is in the closet. Took me a minute to find it.

Bar and lounge area was nice -- our group hung out for a bit and had drinks and watched baseball on the TVs in the lounge at night. We spent the afternoon at the pool resting up for the race. Pool was a decent size and there was a huge fireplace and outdoor seating if you want to have drinks out there at night. The bar had fruit infused water (cucumber and orange) in large pitchers which was refreshing while we were at the pool. They also have coffee at the bar 24/7.

They provided a free shuttle to the race and a to-go breakfast for the runners. They also had a pasta dinner the night before for $10 which was decent and convenient. Would most definitely stay here again next year. Location is great, with easy access to multiple freeways. Parking was plentiful even though they were at capacity because of the race and some other event that was happening. And we got a really great price being part of the race as well. Glad we chose this spot!

Foodie note: there's a really yummy Mexican food spot called Gallegos #2 in a little plaza about a mile. Amazing breakfast burritos and tacos!

We came to San Diego for a fun-filled mini vacation. We took our son to Sea World and the San Diego Zoo.

After a long day at Sea World we were more than ready to check in and wind down in our hotel room. We arrived around 8 pm, and I must say, I was pleasantly suprised when I walked into the lobby. Everything was so nice! Very clean and the decor was superb! They have a bar area with a Starbucks (perfect for me!), and a nice little buffet restaurant area. However, that was short lived..... I dont know what was going on this weekend but this place was packed! The line for check in was out the door! It was painfully slow, so I waited about 20-30 minutes, and it was freezing outside! As I was waiting in line I noticed tons of little kids and teenagers running around. To my suprise, it turns out there was a softball and soccer tournament nearby, so guess where they decided to stay? Here!!!! I actually overheard one of the guests talking about a bunch of kids running through the halls upstairs and how she had to yell at them to get them to quiet down. I thought to myself "I hope these parents have enough courtesy and respect for other guests to make their kids behave" boy oh boy was I wrong!

When it was my turn to check in the lady was very short and abrupt. At this point I just wanted to get upstairs and shower! I agree with other reviewers about the elevator. Its atrocious! One tiny SLOW elevator.

Our room was immaculate! Very clean, and nicely decorated. The bed was super comfy! And 5 fluffy pillows? Yes please! I was super pleased with the room, and I am very picky. The room was not disappointing at all, very comfortable. Kudos to Marriott!

The people above us were ridiculous! NEVER, have I been next to the most obnoxious people in any place ive ever stayed. At one point I thought they were doing construction above me, turns out it was fantastic soccer/softball guests. It was extremely difficult to do anything with all the banging and screaming. Im not one to complain, but this was ridiculous! C'mmon people, have some respect for other guests and watch your kids! Im not a complainer, but I had to call front desk after listening to this for 2 hours. It was 11:00 when I called. The people from the front desk apologized for the inconvenience, and sent security up while I was on the line. I kid you not, 10 minutes later the noise was GONE!!! I must add, the same thing happened the next night, I called once again, and 10 minutes later, they stopped!
I was so pleased with the way things were handled. Please note this noise was extreme, and its not the fault of the hotel. The hotel was great. The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars was because of the incidents. Other than that, they would have gotten 5. I just happened to book at the wrong time!

I would actually stay here again. Its a very nice place, rooms are cozy and staff is helpful.

This is a great place to stay! I checked in a little early from getting off my flight and wanted something to eat, without me  asking, they gave me a menu and sat me down in a comfortable seat and opened their bistro 2 hours early just for me. I was shocked. I used to work for Hyatt and that was hospitality 101.

I can't recommend this hotel if you're staying with more than 1 other person. The rooms are just way too small. We travel to Southern California a lot for soccer tournaments and I've just be come accustomed to a room with a separate living area with pull out sofa. That way I can stay up late watching Lock-Up on MSNBC without having to say "go to sleep" a thousand times to my kids.

These "suites" have to be smaller than a dorm room in Stockholm. You literally trip on everything just to get to another part of the room.

The lobby bar and breakfast buffet made up slightly for the coffins they call rooms but overall... you might want to look elsewhere.

When my bf booked this hotel for our stay in San Diego, I was a little hesitant. I lived in SD when I was going to college and never really a remembered a hotel in this area. Once we drove up to the location, I was in for a nice surprise.

The hotel is centrally located (hence the name) in SD in an area known as Kearny Mesa. It's minutes from good food and about 15 minutes from Downtown. It's a great place to stay if you're looking for something reasonably priced and great amenities. My bf loves that they offer cucumber and orange water in the lobby. The room had a king sized bed, sofa with pull-out bed, a fridge, and swiveling flat panel tv. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Even at 12am when I needed a razor, they had one quickly sent up. We booked this room through priceline and for $80 butcks, it's a really affordable place to stay in SD. Free wi-fi and no cost parking on top of everything will guarantee us coming back!

This is the greatest place!  The staff is what makes this place so special. Everyone, from the front desk people to the bar tender to the maid to the restaurant workers were friendly, helpful, courteous, professional, honest, nice, and on and on.  Can't say enough positive thngsntomsay about the staff!  I will always stay here!

I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott for a work conference.  I really want to give the hotel 4 stars but the bed was so uncomfortable my back wont allow me to.  The hotel itself is very clean and the employees are great.  They were very welcoming and friendly.
I didnt get a chance to eat at the restaurant there but I did order from room service.  The menu for room service is not diverse but the food was average.  They do have a gym and pool which was great.  I was able to utilize both.

+Very friendly staff;
+Rooms are CLEAN.
+Mini-fridge to store snacks
+Blow dryer is a real blow dryer, not the wimpy-no-power ones plugged into the wall.
+A nice desk set-up.  I usually run across a small desk shoved in the corner of the room.  These rooms have a roomy desk, nice office chair, and is set-up to make you feel relaxed, but able to get work done.
+Beautiful pool area with outdoor fireplace at night.
+Free parking
+My room was caddy-corner to the one room in the entire hotel who decided to buy a case of beer and party on their balcony.  When I talked to the front desk, they quickly responded to my request for another room, and immediately sent in security to shut the party down.

-Elevator will shortly break down; not super reliable...
-Free wireless is on the slower side.

Very clean, some oddness.

Very new and clean hotel. Good location. Close to major highways and a lot of local restaurants. The room we got does not have balcony. It was really big. The pool is nice and clean. The shower water pressure was good. The appliances are new and working.

Now some complaints:
1. It was hard to find trash cans in the hotel. I donot know if it is city regulation or what. The trash cans in the hotels are few and far between.
2. The parking situation is not the worst. However it was definitely not ideal. The parking spots are mostly compact size without marking. And they are usually far from the entrance. There were a couple of times I have to carry my sleeping kid to the room from the parking lot. That was a bit challenging.
3. Slow elevator. It was almost funny how slow the elevator was. The elevator serves four floors, and feels like it was serving forty floors.

The restaurant offers nice food and reasonably priced. That was definitely a plus. Overall  I enjoyed my stay and would recommend this hotel to my friends.

We have been to San Diego twice in the past year. Both times we have stayed at Courtyard by Marriott but in two different locations. This review is based on my comparison with the other Courtyard by Marriott at Hotel Circle.

Location:

The Hotel Circle location was far superior to this location. This location is ok, but there are not many good restaurants nearby and it is a bit of a drive to any of the main attractions in San Diego.

Rooms:

We had the one bedroom suite each time. I actually preferred the layout of this hotel better. Both hotels were nicely renovated and the rooms were very clean. This suite also appeared to be bigger. In our suite, we had a bar with microwave, fridge and sink. There was a desk and a pullout couch in the living room area and two chairs and a coffee table. In the bedroom there was a king bed and another pull out couch. The couches were not very comfortable but not a big deal, they served their purpose. The maids were excellent in both hotels.

Food:

Both had pretty good room service. This hotel also had a nice continental breakfast that was four dollars or a buffet breakfast with eggs, bacon, etc. that was 12 dollars. That was a nice option. They also both have a little convenience store at the front which is nice.

Gym:

The hotel circle location had a far superior gym. This gym was small and did not have free weights. That was annoying as that is part of my daily workout routine.

Pool:

This pool was very nice. They also had a fire pit with chairs around if you want to sit outside.

Elevators:

Yes, this is a category after staying here. This hotel only had one elevator which was shared with the staff. On the bottom floor it had a door on the other side that lead to the linen closet. I did not like this at all. My son always wanted to lean against the back of the elevator that was also a door. I found this very annoying and I didn't like how slow it was. But I also don't want to carry a two year old up the stairs all the time.

Staff:

The staff was very friendly as they usually are in Marriotts.

Movies:

This hotel did not have pay-per-view movies. This is a deal breaker for me as the kids could not find anything to watch on tv at nights when we were unwinding in a room. If it was two adults, it may not be a problem because you wouldn't be staying in the room at night much anyway but a toddler and a 5 year-old need entertainment.

So.. I'm pretty much a Marriott Girl and travel down to SD quite a bit so I've stayed at a lot of the SD Marriott's. This time, we were heading down to SD to go to a concert near SDSU but we were also planning on doing some meals over in Hillcrest and eventually heading out to Julian so we opted for something in the middle.. hence, we picked this hotel which was centrally located and very freeway convenient.

As someone else mentioned, this is really not the ideal hotel if 1) you don't have a car and 2) you want to stay where there's lots of activity/nightlife/shopping, etc.

The hotel is actually really nice..almost as nice as most of the regular Marriotts w/the exception of a few things like the room amenities but hey, I can live with that considering it's also about half the price. The bed, rooms, lobby -- everything else was super nice and seemed top notch to me. I do agree with the comment about the elevator -- it is really slow and stodgy feeling -- reminds me of something you'd find in a lower level motel. If there's one thing I'd suggest they upgrade it'd be the elevator but otherwise, great job Courtyard! :-)

I'm writing this review a mere 6.5 hours after leaving this hotel. This is my 2nd Courtyard hotel that I've stayed at and I must say it was a pleasure. The staff were extremely helpful. Upon leaving, we wanted to print our boarding passes at their kiosk but were only able to print 1 out of 3. The front desk attendant not only tried to help us solve the issue but actually went back to her computer to print the rest for us! Talk about great customer service!

Customer service aside, the rooms were nice. My group each had a single King w/ pull-out sofa bed. I really enjoyed the modern decor of the room and bathroom. For some odd reason, the pretty shower curtain made my shower more upbeat and I felt like I was in my own home showering. It seems like universally, Courtyard doesn't have the softest towels in the world -- again, I felt like I was drying myself with sand paper lol. Since I flew in, I actually used the shampoo, conditioner and lotion provided next to the sink. Not bad! My skin feels soft and is slightly scented w/ a semi-tropical pineapple aroma and my thick, long hair feels and looks clean.  The blowdryer was a tad intense; luckily, I didn't have to do any styling because it might have been a struggle since I didn't see any options of lowering the intensity.

Aside from the towels, my only other con is the elevator.  Good golly, could it be ANY slower? And I seriously don't understand why there are even "open door" and "close door" buttons -- they don't seem to affect anything. The elevator is SO slow that I saw from 10 ft that it was open and was still able to round the corner, step into the elevator and not see the door close for 2-3 seconds after!

Okay, I lied... there's another con: not a whole lot is close to the hotel itself, although the freeways are really close to it. We went to the Gaslamp district for dinner and it only took 10 minutes. Luckily, we had a rental car but for those without that luxury, not sure if that's a deal breaker.

I booked our rooms through Priceline and was able to pay $109 for the night, which I think is a super decent price for an above average hotel in San Diego. My group unanimously agreed that we like this Courtyard and will definitely being coming back the next time we're in town.

The hotel is nice, but there is a problem with sewer gases permeating into the rooms.  It is usually at night.  I brought it to the attention of the woman working at the front desk.  She said several guests have complained about the problem in different parts of the building.  She stated they have not figured out the source.  She sent a maintenance crew up and they poured some chemicals down the sink drain and sprayed the carpets with air freshener.  However, it was only a temporary fix as the smell came back later that night after the air freshener wore off.  I had reservations at this hotel for three consecutive weeks.  Rather than risk checking into another room with similar issues the next two weeks, I decided to cancel my remaining reservations.  The woman at the front desk was very sympathetic and she provided coupons for complimentary breakfast in the hotel's restaurant.

The hotel has a restaurant that serves a buffet breakfast for around $13 consisting of eggs, link sausages, bacon, bagels, fruits, and features a chef for omelets and waffles.  The food was good.

Rare for me to provide a below good review, as to date I just reserve my reviews for good experiences.  I like Courtyards and stay in them all over the US. This one is the largest Courtyard Marriott I've seen.   My room was quiet, which is a major plus, but the food mediocre at best as well as the service during my stay.  Still, price and location were good.

Wow I can't believe this is a Courtyard! It's got the full service vibe all the way. Front lobby is huge yet cozy. Tons of seating with comfy couches. Little "market" area behind front "stand alone" check ins (no large front desk here) with snack, drinks, wine and a microwave to heat up yummies. Good size bar in the lobby as well as a Cafe and Starbucks. There is also (prob a 50inch) a Go board right by the front desk that displays the weather and other local info. Soo cool. Am I sure we are in a Courtyard? YES we are!!! Way to go Marriott.

Guest rooms are immaculate and super stylish! Loved the bonsai earthy inspired vibe. So far bed is comfy and that is huge as I usually do not sleep well in Marriott beds. Also Loving the flat screen TV and the ihome iPod docking station (no old fashion clock radio alarm clocks here).

Room service at a Courtyard?! Almost unheard of. Well this one has it and its avay 5pm to 10pm daily. Starters such as buffalo wings, house made potato chips and dip, crab cake with mango glaze and samplers. Large size salads like a Wedge, Cobb or gorgonzola spinach salad to name a few. Pasta and Sandwich and full meal entrees.

The standard CY perks are offered, free parking and free "standard" wireless (yes wireless) Internet in guest rooms.

So far this is my favorite Marriott brand hotel I have stayed at yet. I'll write an update upon check out to give the final verdict. (:

******UPDATE**********
Slept like a gem! Beds were super comfy. These had to be the second most comfortable Marriott beds I have slept in. Loved the free wireless internet in the guestrooms and how there was more than one plug by the bed.
Only Two minor complaints...
1. the bathroom vanity/sink area needed to be larger. No room at all for one person let alone the max of 4 people for a double bed guest room.
2. there was no wall mirror in the sleeping area.
Other than that this location is probably in my top 5 of Marriott brand hotels I have stayed at.

Second time here. It's only about a 15 minute drive from the zoo or anything else in San Diego, and a 17 min drive from La Jolla.

Room was clean, and they put us away from the big group that was also in the hotel, so it was nice and quiet.

It's inexpensive enough so you can spend your money on other things in the area.

Their starbucks isn't really a starbucks, and you're better off going to one a few miles away.

The pool was super crowded at 7pm on Saturday night with about 20 screaming kids. And that's not an exaggeration. That was a bummer. I guess the good price, brings in families this time of year. Not one of the parents felt the need to tell the kids to share the pool. Instead they let them take over the whole thing.

So if you want a romantic time at the hotel, this is not the place to go. If you want just a place to sleep where you feel safe and your wallet isn't taking a hit, then this place is a good choice.

Stayed 4 nights in February, Room 321

Pros: Good Location, with easy access to all freeways; Professional service in all departments; useful amenities and modern & updated decor

Cons: You need a car, because restaurants and stores are about a 20-30 minute walk.

With the Courtyard brand geared to the business traveler, my wife and I rarely stay at a Courtyard, but stayed at this hotel because of close proximity to our daughter. We were thoroughly impressed by the professional staff and modern decor.

We really like the Lobby Lounge area, where you can sit down and enjoy a drink (adult beverage or Starbucks) or other quiet areas where you can conduct business. The rooms were comfortable with sitting areas and a large flat screen television. The Breakfast Buffet in the Gazebo Grill restaurant was filling and tasty.

On our next trip to this area, we will definitely be staying at this Courtyard again, as well as recommend it to others.

Comfortable spaces and responsive staff. The room was clean and the restaurant was well received. My only con was the dim lighting in the room, specifically the bathroom. I understand the need to reduce energy usage but it can still be achieved with maybe on more 12w bulb.

Hotel is nice and conveniently located to freeway. It's more upgraded then other courtyards which is great. Starbucks on site offered free iced coffee refills reiterates they're strive for high customer service.

The only reason I'm docking a star is that when we opened the bathroom door it reaked of pot; it was so bad I'm pretty sure we got a contact high. I happen to carry travel size Lysol, sprayed the room and we left for the evening; by the time we got back it was unnoticeable. I'm not a big complainer (plus I got an awesome deal on priceline) so I never mentioned it during our stay, but I just wanted to make a note to the staff for future reference.

Good: easy access to freeway, plenty of restaurants nearby to choose from, pool was heated (kids wanted to go night-swimming in April), cardio room has modern equipment in very good condition, staff was friendly, room was quiet.

Bad: we arrived at 11pm with two very tired kids to find that we had one queen bed with two pillows on it, and one queen bed with zero pillows on it.  When I inquired at the front desk about getting two more pillows, the night manager hesitated, then said he'd send some up.  We got a call a few minutes later: he said there were NO pillows available.  What?  This is a Marriott, right?  We asked him, what do you suggest we do?  and he said he could send up a comforter that we could fold for a pillow.  His explanation was that there were parties with lots of kids and they took extra pillows (??), but a few minutes later, someone appeared with two pillows that smelled of smoke.  Ugh.

Bad: the hallway smelled bad, and our room smelled *strongly* of something else (overpowering cleaning agent?).  We couldn't identify it, but were able to crack the window 3 inches to air it out.

Overall, not the quality experience we expected of the Marriott name.  Our family usually stays in places with "budget" in the name, and we were hoping this would be an upgrade for us.

This place is ok. Stayed for a few days and probably should of stayed somewhere else. Staff was somewhat helpful but they are understaffed at night. Hit the lobby bar a couple of times and they were helpful but the one guy who was working looked so tired since he had to serve drinks and get food from the restaurant since the restaurant only had one server. Rooms were clean but hallways had a funky smell to them. In general this place is really worn out and needs a face lift.

I had never stayed at a Courtyard hotel and was only there really to spend the night so I didn't have to do a 2 1/2 hour drive to a wedding I was going to on Sunday then drive another 2 1/2 hours home on the same day. If I am driving 5 hours, I am staying a while.

I came into town at about 7pm and was promptly checked in. I was asked if I had a floor preference and I said no so I was put on the first floor ... fine by me, easier to get to the restaurant etc and I was only going to sleep.

First; Internet access isn't as bad as other reviewers have said. I had no problem connecting and staying connected on my laptop and my iPad.

Secondly; The hotel staff is exemplary. Courteous doesn't even begin to cover it and they genuinely like one another so that's a bonus.

The fire pit outside is awesome and a great way to relax after driving in traffic for 2 1/2 hours I took advantage of that before bed. Slept like a rock. My alarm went off at 8am and I was astounded that I slept through the night. I woke up rested and headed to the breakfast buffet.

That was okay, nothing special as it was normal buffet fair. I didn't ask if they had a menu because I was only going to have a light meal. the ONE THING I would say to the Marriott staff is make sure your waiters refill coffee. After my bill was dropped I was avoided. I ended up buying coffee at the "Starbucks" Kiosk ... overall I would stay there again!

Very comfortable two day stay in the SD area with very fair rates.  The location is very convenient; about 10 fwy mins from downtown and about 5 fwy mins from Hillcrest.  The immediate area had lots of Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants, with some izakayas open past midnight.  You also get free parking and free wifi.  The wifi is very slow however, spotty at best.  On Sun night when we checked in, the wifi was ridiculously slow. I guess too many people on at once.

The reason for not having five stars is the front desk staff did not make it clear the breakfast was not complimentary.  Honestly, I looked at so many hotels before I decided on this one that I couldn't remember if the breakfast was free or not. When we checked in the front desk guy told us breakfast was served until 10:30 am but did not say there was a surcharge (also did not say it was free but I assumed, since he didn't say a price, I guess my fault for assuming.)  I was wondering why the breakfast items seemed so high quality for free.  It's bc it's not free!  It's $14.95 per person.  For full price, I don't think it's worth it. How often do you pay $15 for one person for breakfast? If it were $9.95 or $7.95 I think it would be very fair.  Breakfast items included scrambled eggs, sausage, thick cut bacon, omelette station, pastries, breads, cereals, oatmeal, fresh squeezed juice (OJ was very sweet), etc.  I guess I looked like one of those cheap Asian ladies that always try to get things for cheaper or free, so I was pretty embarrassed, but the restaurant staff was very polite about my mistake.

As for the room, it was pretty spacious and very clean; the mattress was just ok, but the pillows were very soft and fluffy.  Vanity could have been a bit larger and better lit for makeup application, but it was still ok.  AC was ice cold with we appreciated very much.  Room also came with a mini fridge, and I think I saw a microwave in the "market" area at the front desk.

I did hear the front desk guy say that you can request late check out at 1pm for no extra charge, at 3pm it's a half days charge, and after 6pm it's another full night charge.

Typical design. Every Courtyard has the same setup in the lobby/ bar/ restaurant.
The staff here is wonderful. Everyone is super nice.
The evening bartender remembered my wine choice upon second visit. Bonus!
The bartender (late) night may need a few more lessons, but she was still very nice
great lounge area to chill, do work and have some quiet time during the day. The fireplace is a nice touch.

The rooms are comfortable but the walls are paper thin, I knew when I could hear the guy next door open his curtains that perhaps I needed to be a little bit more quiet myself.
There is free wifi throughout the building, which is always a bonus for me.

This was a nice place to stay, we didn't hit the pool or do anything, but the beds were clean and it had really nice people working here. I almost feel bad for not taking advantage of any of their other amenities, but we were there for one night and we were out and about the whole time. However, for the price - this was an excellent place to stay. It was close to a few breweries, accessible to the highway, you can get to everything in San Diego easily from here. I don't think there was any complaints I had about it here.

I've stayed at this Courtyard on two week long business trips now and I can say it is pretty good across the board for Marriott standards and about average compared to other hotels.

Both trips I did not have the opportunity to use any of the amenities but it looks really nice.  I did use the coffee bar and lounge bar daily and those are as expected except for the bar area at night is slow.  There was a temp lady filling in for the bar the first two nights I stayed and she was great, the regular guy seems like he's not quite keeping up with the flow.

I had a similar experience with the breakfast buffet in that someone always has to go get the omelet guy which makes it hard to plan a quick breakfast and dash to the client meeting at 6:30/7am.  Servers for breakfast are also hit and miss. They did do a good job of keeping up with the constant flux of people which was really nice.

I especially like the pantry and the fact that they carry these protein cookies and Pinot Noir is always stocked for me to take back to my room at the end of a long day.  They also have a great selection of flavored popcorn - in short, I like a nice wind down snack and drink and they have great availability.

I also had a whirlpool tub this time that was amazing!  I watched my shows from the tub with my Pinot and popcorn and couldn't have been happier...except maybe at my own house :)

Thanks guys for making my trip enjoyable!

The hotel was very clean, and the towels were enough. It was a lovely experience. We went to the pool, there were towels there. The whole scene is very nice.

After some time, we got hungry. We asked her about this place called the butcher shop, and she actually gave us some coupons for it. She's lovely! She definitely represents the company well!

I am a pretty big fan of the buffet in here! I work at a nearby company and I had heard they give discounts to employees around the area so a few coworkers and I decided to walk on over and give it a try on our lunch and it did not disappoint!
The first time we went it was American food themed. Veggies, macaroni and cheese, potatoes, roast beef and turkey. It was delicious. The second visit was Italian and I was a happy camper! There was lasagna, cheese ravioli, salad, garlic bread and a few other pastas.
We paid around $10 including tip which is hard to beat since it is all you can eat. Definitely a dangerous find for my weight!

After reading all the not-so-good yelp reviews about this Marriot, I was expecting it to be ghetto and gross. Thankfully, it was not. I was actually surprised at how nice it looked. The business center and lobby were nicely decorated and there were a lot of sofas and chairs for relaxing. They also had a fireplace inside by the sofas and outside near the pool. The person who checked us in at 9:30pm was also very friendly and the whole process took no more than 5 minutes. Our room was on the 4th floor and was very nice and clean. The hotel is also conveniently located near the freeway and close to a lot of restaurants. The only cons to this hotel were that the hallways had a weird smell (and was kinda stuffy...) and the AC in the room was very loud.

My fiance and I stayed here from Thursday to Saturday this past weekend for his brother's wedding nearby.  Everything was excellent, and Alex, their onsite manager, went above and beyond multiple times during our stay.

When we first arrived, the initial plan was to check into the hotel and have the rehearsal and a casual dinner in the park, but it was raining.  The groom's parents were able to check in efficiently and arrange everything with Alex, the onsite manager, so that they had a conference room for the rehearsal and the rehearsal dinner onsite immediately afterward.  During the rehearsal, Alex asked the bridal party if we needed water or anything else, and was very attentive.

During dinner, I was able to ask the waitress for a specially prepared dish that accommodated my food allergies, which she was very happy to do and the food was delicious and reasonably priced (I had sautéed salmon and green beans, which were crisp, and delicious, and I cook pretty well so I was impressed).

The next morning (the morning of the wedding), my fiance's parents told me that the wedding was going to have a caterer do a hot - drop (drop off chafing dishes rather than prepare food onsite), so I would not be able to ask the caterers to accommodate my needs and would need to pick up some food to bring ahead of time.  Alex was working the bistro that morning, and I asked if they could prepare something off of the breakfast menu and make a lunch for me that I could have for breakfast and perhaps eat separately later.  He kindly and patiently took the time to discuss a list of foods that I could and could not have to give to his onsite chef, who would be in the kitchen until 10am and would return at 5pm, and said that he would make sure it was ready before we needed to leave an hour before we needed to leave for the venue that afternoon, sl it was ready at 2pm and we were able to leave at 3pm.

Sure enough, my breakfast was delicious and perfectly prepared, and because our family was all staying there and eating breakfast, they COMPED both of my meals!  I almost had a happy cry!  The food was ready for me to take with us that evening and again was perfect.

If you are going to ask them to prepare something, allow time to pick it up, as the front desk person was relying on the computer to find the location of the dish since Alex was not available at that time and the comluter was running a bit slow, but another service person was able to locate our dish in the kitchen.

I felt so incredibly taken care of.  The service from Alex especially was top-notch, and the hotel was clean and updated.  I would highly recommend it and would stay here again.  Nice plus: our room had a nice view of the pool (212).

The Courtyard was cool. My husband was here on a three month-long business trip & I decided to tag along. I was happy and impressed with their customer service, cleanliness of rooms, breakfast buffet & overall amenities.

The breakfast here is stellar in my opinion. I was there a little less than a month & never got tired of it! The dining experience here is very pleasant. Quick service, lots of space, friendly wait staff, amazing selection of foods. It's all great. Either that or I'm easily impressed :)

Room service is quick & super friendly. I've never had any issues with cleanliness with any of the three rooms we've stayed in. They offer complimentary laundry supplies. Microwaves are avail upon request for certain rooms. Flat screen LG TVs & iPod docks in the rooms. LOTS of outlet plugs. Free wifi which is actually GOOD; not the free stuff that runs slower than your actual cell phone service!

The beds were uncomfortable for us. It felt like they were sunken in in the middle and we woke up with sore backs some days. No Bueno.

We also had issues with the hot water coming and going. It was like a box of chocolates; when we turned on the shower, we never knew what we were gonna get!

Unfortunately we were here during a ton of renovations they were doing to the dining area as well as the fourth floor, so we dealt with lots of dust and various unpleasant smells. BUT! The progress of the 4th floor looks amazing! Completely redecorated carpets, walls, room decor etc not to mention snazzy 55" Samsung TVs.

It's not bad for an extended stay. I look forward to when renovations are completely done, and I do appreciate that they regularly update and improve the overall hotel experience here.

The front desk staff was very warm, friendly, and accommodating, and the facility was clean and quiet.
The location is nice, right across the street from Ashford University.
We loved the design of our suite, and the cleaning staff did an exceptional job.
We especially liked the fireside seating area, near the pool and hot tub, and
having a Starbucks on site was nice.

I've stayed here three times.  The hotel and the rooms are nicely decorated.   The rooms were always clean.  The staff are friendly.  The lounge/bar area looks nice and cozy.

The breakfast buffet isn't anything special.  It's typical scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and pastries.  But you can also order food to be prepared or purchase cold items like yogurt and fruit.

During our last stay we could hear the people in the room next to us.  These ladies were talking and laughing for hours and I needed sleep for a class the next day.  I've never had that issue before. Luckily they were gone the next night and I got a better night's sleep.

The parking spaces are pretty narrow.  Management needs to consider having the lines repainted to widen them.  If you have an SUV, it will be tight unless you take up two spaces.

Overall, it's a decent hotel for short stays.  I'd stay there again for the price and location.
