Clean, no-frills room with coffee and Costco muffins in the morning. The staff is VERY friendly and the price can't be beat for how clean the rooms are. Free wireless, too! It's in Point Loma which is not really where I hang out in San Diego, so a car is a must. I'm a fan!

Im going to get to the point.    BAD:I had room 6.  A corner room with no window's ask for another room but there was no more rooms  available not blaming them for that. The  free wi fi works like shit very low signal which means the laptop was moving very slow!!! For $66.30 a day not worth it. GOOD:The staff was nice.Close to the airport.I will never stat there again.

My wife and I stopped by the Dolphin Motel this weekend to check it out for a place to stay on our future visits to San Diego. What a pleasant surprise! First, we discovered this is a 100% AMERICA OWNED MOTEL! What a rarity! We met with Allen, who co-owns the place with his dad Holly. By the way, Holly is an ex-Marine (i know...once a Marine...) so don't laugh when you address him as Holly. Holly and Allen have owned the place over thirty years. Most of their help has been there the same amount of time, some longer. This speaks volumes about the owners taking care of their workers. The rooms are immaculate, all painted hospital white, all bed spreads are pure white. This shows their confidence in presenting a clean and comfortable place. If it's clean you're looking for at a good price, this is it. The rooms are not large but they are spotless and very reasonable. Holly and Allen actually work on site, not manage from some other country. So, our future stays in San Diego will be at the Dolphin. I encourage you to come and meet Holly and Allen and check it out before making a choice. You'll be very pleasantly surprised!

Great bang for your buck. We had an upstairs corner room with a little balcony; the view was gorgeous and the room spotless with a nice flatscreen. I would definitely recommend this place to someone looking for a simple place with a nice view. Excellent, friendly service and nice perks like Wi-Fi and free continental breakfast on the cheerful patio downstairs. Check out The Pearl bar down the street for swanky cocktails and poolside film screenings.

Wonderful place to stay!  The buildings may look old, even with their fresh coat of white paint, but don't let that deter you -- the rooms are very, very clean!  They've got the details covered here.  Family owned and operated.   Super friendly owners and staff.  Newer bathrooms.  Muffins, bananas, yogurt, OJ, coffee and tea for breakfast.   So glad my friend and I found this place.  We highly recommend it and will definitely stay there again! :)

Awesome place, I was looking for quick inexpensive place in SD and this place came up, for my sons bday weekend, first of all this place is only for the budget concious folks, if you are looking for fancy, this is not for you, the rooms are very clean, killer view of the yatchs from the top floor, and the nice patio to enjoy the complimentary muffins, coffee and juice we did not have any milk for my sons cereal,I asked the owner if they had any for sale there, he said no, next thing you know, we had milk at our front door brought over by him! (very cool!) Love the 5 star treatment and attitude, without the price!! We will be back!! Thanks!!

You will rarely have the opportunity to stay at a place like the Dolphin Motel. First off this is very much a bare bones, no frills place. Nothing fancy here folks. You will find the Dolphin in an excellent location, steps from the sea, fishing boats, dining options, and cute homes. Enough can't be said about the staff, homey, and genuinely friendly. You will likely meet the owner, I chatted with him several times. This is an older, well maintained place that is extraordinarily clean. You can practically eat off the floors inside and out. Parking is included with your room rate too. The rooms are fairly small, glossy white walls, frig, a place to hang clothes, shower with wildly high water pressure...you could power wash your boat with this thing. No tub. Be aware, the walls are thin, you will hear your neighbors on occasion, this is a quiet place though, and will not pose a problem for most. A modest breakfast is provided near some outdoor tables, with umbrellas, it can be a very laid back sociable scene if you choose to get involved, or you can realx in solitude. Bottom line, for the price, location, cleanliness, and hospitality, you will seriously have a hard time beating this place in the San Diego area. Although this is far from a 5 star hotel, for the price and everything else considered, I give it 5.

Ok, what's with all the stars people? Location & price (1 star each)- that's it
Otherwise, it was literally a nightmare- tiny, musty, noisy (elephant sounds from upstairs, cellphone yackers in the courtyard @ 6 AM, screeching walkie-talkies from housekeeping, etc). Not to mention the creepy/itchies I've been experiencing since my stay (yes, literally). No way would I be subjected to that place again, not even for free!

Like others have said,  it's WHITE, it's plain, the rooms are on the small side and there are no "extras," like shampoo, waffle makers, or things the chains use to lure "guests."

With all that said...  The service is amazing. On our first night just after check-in we were getting ready to leave when one of the owners asked how everything was, if we had plans for the evening and if we were familiar with the area. After our replies, Alan gave directions to a local clean and tidy laundromat (we'd been away from home for 5 days already), Sunset Cliffs, and multiple eateries. Again and again we were asked how everything was, given additional directions and suggestions and generally treated as an honered guest.  It was so nice have an owner acknowledge our business and appreciate it honestly! We enjoyed the simple muffins, yogurt, bananas, Orange juice, milk and coffee each morning.

Don't expect frills, because you won't find them here.  What you will find is a very clean, very simple place, that is 100% American Owned to call home while you are in San Diego.

O.k. wait.... I can not be the only person to be honest about this....  If you've lived in San Diego for the last 10+ years and never patronized "The Dolphin" for the fun factor then you definitely missed out!  NO, I don't mean taking a cheap date or "pay date" to this place (although I know that is what it was known for a long time ago).  I'm not that kind of person at all!  I used to go there with my girlfriend when we wanted to have a really FUN night together!  And no, it was never an "hourly" thing either!  Those "in the know" always knew this place was VERY clean and maybe except for the neon, VERY cool.  Of course VERY cheap.  Especially for what you got!

Wait.... no more jacuzzi's (and I don't mean the little tiny bathtub ones, I mean the fun party one's!)???  No more movies???  No more mirrors???  :( :::::::::::

For $60.00 I can go on Priceline and score something in the Gaslamp.  Why would I pay that here?

What a fun little get away no more.....  Day's gone by.....

I just wanna say AMEN to the sign they have posted outside their hotel "Why pay more? Ask to see a room". We had a group of 13 and paid only $50/night. Very minimalistic rooms but worth every penny. Very clean, perfect location, & nice continental breakfast with free wi-fi and nice large LG TVs in every room. What more could one ask for? Maybe a better view of the marina but hey, it's a lovely 2 minute walk away. Would definitely stay here again!

I was pretty excited to stay here based on the reviews, and found most to be accurate.  The place is pretty clean, the rooms are a bit smaller than I imagined.  I found myself hitting my elbows in the shower.  It came with a mini fridge which is a plus.  Parking lot seems to get pretty full at night, we got lucky getting a spot after returning from Sea World our first night.  The breakfast consisted of juice, coffee, muffins, bagles and what not.  The walls are pretty thin, which I'm sure is why there is a posted rule of keeping quiet after 9pm.  The only downside to my stay was the gentleman who checked us in, he didn't seem like he wanted to be there nor was he very welcoming.  Thought maybe he was having a bad day and brushed it off.  However the folling day seemed to be the same attitude.  I read so many positive reviews about the staff, I was a little let down with him.  There was a younger guy on our last day that was very nice, smiled and at least said "hello".

I found the location to be pretty east, right near Rosecrans, which has a bunch of places to eat.  And only a short drive to Sea World and the Zoo.

Overall, it was an ok stay.  Not sure if I would stay again, but I can see how it may fit others as a place to lay your head and take a shower.

We went to the Dolphin again this year.  Wonderful, wonderful time!  We stayed 4 nights in unit 28.  Personal balcony space, two beds, clean as a whistle.  The housekeeper was so sweet & talked to us every day.  All of the office staff & owners are incredibly nice.  They make you feel like family & really care about making sure you have a great stay.  Go here.  Now.  And every time you're in San Diego.

Small family owned business with great customer service.  Very simple and basic lodging (all rooms have one king sized bed).  The owners genuinely care about their customers and will even go out of their way to help make your stay more enjoyable.   Complimentary breakfast, cable tv, and wi-fi; great value and at an affordable price ($50 a night)

The rooms are painted all white, minimal furnishings but clean.  Small fridge in room, tv with cable and free wifi and free parking.  You can ask for a hair dryer, iron, etc but bring your own shampoo/conditioner/etc., or purchase them in the lobby.  Shower was small, and needed regrouting in a few places (so does mine, lol) but water pressure was banging!  Reminded my husband and I of several hotels we've stayed at in Europe.  Vintage feel without being hipster, walking distance to a good seafood place (Mitch's).  Rooms are non-smoking but they do allow cigarette smoking outside (no cigars).  There is a prominently posted sign advising guests that no one extra (unregistered) can be in the room after 10, and that quiet time is observed between 9pm-9am; also, no fish cleaning, which we appreciated (motel is across the street from the habor). Staff were very friendly, and the owner made a point of stopping by to talk to us at breakfast.  We stayed a Thursday and Friday night and paid less than $200 for both nights, so I'm happy with the value for my money, but if you are expecting luxury, then you need to be prepared to pay a lot more for it elsewhere.

We saw good reviews and thought that it wouldn't hurt to try this place out since we only needed a place to sleep for one night, but boy were we wrong.  When we walked into the lobby to check in, we witnessed both staff members starting at the security cameras. That immediately made us feel uncomfortable because it took them a while to even acknowledge us. We got our keys and were amazed at how tiny the rooms were.  Anyway, we dropped off our stuff and left to enjoy a beautiful and adventurous day in San Diego. We came back late at night,  around 1-2 am and went to our rooms for quick showers and sleep. As we say down and prepared to shower, we received a vicious knock on the door and it was a staff member saying that they saw us on the cameras with 3 people; and that we can only have 2 people. The part that upsets me is that the man had the guts to make an excuse by saying something about a noise complaint when we made absolutely no noise. I mean we were in the room for literally 1 minute and were to tired to even talk.. We told him that he didn't need to make an excuse, and that he could've just been honest and just say it's company policy rather than to falsely accuse us for something ridiculous.  I am totally against inconsiderate people who are loud in motels/hotels and will honestly tell you that we were never even close to being loud. He(the staff acting like a power authority) then went quiet because he knew he messed up. He then says "you can take it to my boss in the morning, I'm just doing my job because we are all on camera and the boss reviews it everyday. " i mean really, he doesn't even want to be responsible for his own actions? What a brilliant and loyal staff member they have. I have never ever stayed at a hotel or motel that is so concerned with an extra guest. Very stingy place. Not a family friendly place at all because if you came with your spouse and child, they'd probably kick you out for having your child there (an extra person ). Bottom line, this place will work if you're traveling as a couple and it is decent in terms of cleanliness; but beware, it can be an evil place. After the brief exchange, we packed or bags and drove home because this place made us all sick. Bad ending to an otherwise enjoyable adventure in a beautiful city.

I've only stayed in the downtown and Hotel Circle areas for my trips to San Diego so when I needed a place that was dirt cheap and nearby the Point Loma area, I was relieved that my friends mentioned this motel because this wasn't listed in my usual search on the travel search sites like Kayak and etc.

Rooms here are either $50 or $75 a night. The room with one queen bed is $50 and the one that's got a queen bed and a twin bed is $75. These rooms are all small but if you're looking for just a clean place to sleep that's walking distance from where you need to go to it's great. I shared the room with a queen bed and twin bed with two friends and it was comfortable enough. It had a small fridge and a surprisingly nice flat screen TV. Their complimentary breakfast consisted of free coffee and muffins- I think they were Costco muffins cut in half. The staff was impeccably kind and eager to help in getting taxis for us.

There are so many dodgy looking places in this area, but the Dolphin Motel exceeded my low expectations. I don't think I'll ever want to stay in this part of San Diego again, but if I do, I'd consider staying here again.

The Dolphin Motel is cute, cheap ($60ish/night), and in a great location. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean but tiny. You can tell the motel owners care greatly about what they do. Also, the continental breakfast was pretty decent for a motel at that price. A man who I assume was the owner even gave us tips and a map on what to see while we were visiting.

I would definitely recommend if you're visiting San Diego and on a budget.

Wasn't sure what to expect but really, their website and photos are pretty accurate. It was easy to find, had plenty or parking and the man behind the counter was very gentlemanly and friendly. The room was sparse and EVERYTHING was white (they mention that on the website...and they really aren't kidding) but it was a great find and perfect for my needs (didn't need anything special, just an inexpensive and clean place to stay) and I loved the family-owned feel that their website produced.

It's definitely a motel (as opposed to a hotel)  but it's very clean, tidy, and the warm friendly service can't be beat.

    Free wi-fi, free breakfast.

Dolphin Motel was perfect for what I was looking for. Last minute travel to San Diego brought me upon this place and it is cheap enough to bypass the critiques of other yelpers.

What do you expect for $50/night?

Dolphin Motel is spotlessly CLEAN, has free Wi-Fi, and offers a continental breakfast. The rooms are small, and the TV is smaller, but what it lacks in size and luxury, it makes up for in budget pricing. Plus, there is a bar across the street that boasts drink specials to rival afforability.

Note here, there is no shampoo (though you can buy some generic packets for $0.50) and you'll definately need a car to get around.

Overall, I had a great time here, it was excactly what I was looking for but cheaper. Quite simply this is your run-of-the-mill MOTEL. I ended up staying another night- that should speak for itself.

Stayed here on a trip to California. The price is very good for the area.
Not many amenities- didn't have shampoo. But the breakfast in the morning (muffins and juice) was welcome. The free wifi was also good.
The staff were super nice and helpful. Eating breakfast in the morning, we were directed to the Cabrillo monument nearby. It wasn't on our radar until then, but we were happy that we went.
It was a great place to stay.

In celebration of my fiance's first day off in 1.5 years, we decided to get a room at the Dolphin for our "stayvation". The rate was definitely higher than what the other yelpers paid, but with July 4th around the corner it's understandable. The room was definitely small, but extremely clean. The sheets were so clean Alex had to spray some febreeze to mask the Clorox smell. The bathroom was small, but I really appreciated how clean it was. The bed wasn't the most comfortable, but the outside noise level is very low during sleeping hours. On our way out, we were offered a complimentary bottled water (SCORE! what's free these days?!) and were told that if we were to come back we'd get a better room with a view of the harbor. We walked out of the lobby feeling appreciated and cheerful.

I will totally recommend this place to anyone popping into SD.

If you're looking for a place to stay in a great, quiet location with a nice ocean view without breaking the piggy bank, the Dolphin Motel could do the trick. It's a family owned motel with superior hospitality and winds  up being squeaky clean inside which you'd probably never guess from driving by. $55 room for 2 on a Saturday night by beautiful Shelter Island and minutes from downtown is alright by me.

They have a pool - kind of awkward right next to the street - and a small flat screen in each room that I think only goes up a quarter of the volume to keep the noise down. Coffee and muffins await you outside in the morning.

Simple, clean and much more affordable than the rest of the dumps nearby.

I stayed at the Dolphin Motel with my boyfriend for one night while we were San Diego with plans to go to the zoo the next day.

    PROS:
    Price.
    Location.
    Cleanliness.
Staff (VERY Friendly, Nice, & Knowledgeable).

...the place does what it's supposed to do. It offers a clean and quick place to stay in a decent location for a great price. It's only a plus that the staff is so great! I'm definitely staying at the Dolphin Motel again if I find myself in San Diego again.

If you're traveling on a budget, the Dolphin is for you! High season (June, July, August) may not be the bargain you're hoping for (we paid 90 a night in August), but with the location- you're still saving by avoiding the chain hotels in the area.

Booking over the internet can be scary- because it's always a gamble once you get there and find out what you're paying for. We arrived and immediately loved the place! It's a cute little motel - clean on the outside and right across the street from the harbor. When we booked the room a couple months ago- we were told no rooms with a harbor view were available but we were pleasantly surprised when we got a room with a nice big window looking out at the harbor with a nice breeze coming in!

First impressions of the room were good. It didn't really have any kind of smell to it whatsoever. They had left the windows open, so it smelled like fresh air. The room we got was small with a queen size bed. It was a perfect size for me and my fiancé. If you're traveling with a large family- double check what room size you're getting first as the one we got was just right for 2 adults.

There is a nice flat panel TV on the wall....i was expectings creepy mirrors on the wall or ceiling like someone had mentioned- but didn't see any. Lol. A mini fridge is also in the room and closet space with available hangers. The WiFi was a bit spotty but did the job.

The bathroom is small with the necessary amenities. A window can be found in there as well. It was nice to wake up every morning to a view of the tops of palm trees peeking through that window. J

Breakfast in the morning was filling. The muffins like everyone says are super good- and they offer yogurt, orange juice, coffee, and bananas as well.

Ok, I think I'm done rambling, here is my list!

    Cons

The motel IS on a corner- so the street noise kept waking me up at night. It could've been because it was Friday night, lots of traffic out and about. I thought I kept hearing a loud truck. Lol. The next night I turned on the fan (in the ac unit) and it drowned out any noise and I slept peacefully J

The mattress was a little firm. I joked with my fiancé that when you sit down, the mattress doesn't move. I had a neck ache the next day because of this. But the sheets were nice and clean with a cute quilt type blanket on top ( I wonder where they get these, I wanted it!)

The parking lot is pretty small, so I would leave your car there as much as you can- or get back early as to reserve your spot. We managed to get a spot every day but I can see how it might be an issue.

    Pros

I appreciate good water pressure! The shower water pressure was awesome and strong. It's a stand only shower. I'm about 5' 8"-9" and the shower nozzle came about 1" over my head. So if you're tall, this might be an issue. Nice quality towels and rags as well!

The perimeter of the hotel was pretty quiet. In the 3 days we stayed there, only one of the days had guests sitting out on the patio chairs. Other than that, every time we came back, it was pretty quiet around the "courtyard"

The location is great. Not far from downtown San Diego and you have the harbor right across the street if you feel like fishing! You're pretty much 20 minutes from doing anything around the area!

You can trust this hotel. Between this hotel and the other one we stayed at- I really felt like you could trust the owners. The reviews are correct in that they really seem to have respect for their business and it shows. I enjoyed staying here because I felt as if they really do work to make their customers happy and not just take their money.

Despite the cons on my list, nothing was bad enough to make me not like this place. This is going to be my go to place if I find myself in San Diego again and I will definitely recommend this cute little motel to anyone traveling in the area. I didn't feel the neighborhood was unsafe at ALL and i don't know how the other reviewer thinks he could get a room at the gaslamp for 60 bucks. i couldn't even find one for under 200 on priceline. good luck w that!

Anyways- thanks to the Dolphin staff for a great place to stay!

If you're low maintenance and need a cheap place to stay, Dolphin Motel is for you.

The bathroom, shower, and room are on the small side but it's good enough.  You get a queen size bed - which was a little firm by my standard but I slept comfortably.  There's cable TV, wifi (didn't get the best connection at times but hey it was free), and free continental breakfast (costco muffins, orange juice, milk, fruit, yogurt, coffee).

This family owned motel is on a lot of lists for best budget/value motels.  I would definitely come back again if I needed a cheap place to stay in San Diego.

I noticed the great reviews and yelp ratings for this motel and booked a stay for four nights during July.  There were some pros, and some cons, as it were.

First of all, it's refreshing to not deal with parking fees, "resort fees", wireless internet fees, and all the other myriad of fees other hotels charge for.

The cleaning staff, and front desk staff, were extremely friendly.  The breakfast wasn't great, but what motel gives any sort of breakfast, let alone fresh bananas, costco muffins, orange juice, and coffee?  That's worth a star.  The rooms are all white - I mean all white, and look clean.  The water flow is good.

The negatives -- well, our room was very, very, I mean extremely tiny.  Barely room to put a suitcase.  The room walls were small.  Even just watching youtube videos on my iphone, my son got knocks on the wall from the room next door.  And no shampoo, or conditioner?  That's strange.  And although the reviews talk about pricing in the $60s per night, ours was $95 per night.  Really not sure it was worth it for an older small no frills place.

We did visit Point Loma on day one, the zoo and a movie at fashion valley on day 2, sea world on day 3, and the safari park on day 4, and this was close to everything, no more than 20 minutes, if that.

Very clean and awesome room service!!!

Friendly staff and their nice breakfast touched me. nice location, reasonable price are their another pros. My better half didn't happy about the bathroom as hot water wasn't found sometimes.

The rooms are very small, but the bed was as good as we slept very comfortably.

Hope to back soon if we make another holiday plan!

Exactly what I'm looking for in a motel: nice, clean rooms, friendly staff, the building is laid out nicely and makes a good impression. The (complimentary!) breakfasts aren't too big, but will get you going with a snack and coffee, served on the patio outside. The price is reasonable as well.

I'll definitely stay there if I'm in the neighbourhood again.

    We loved this hotel!

I feel sorry for people who experienced nasty staff, our staff was a friendly as can be.  I actually am thankful for security cameras, it means they're looking out for my car, and me.  It's a good feeling, especially after we had visited places recently like New Orleans where windshields are busted daily.

The room wasn't huge, but wasn't tiny by any means.  We were traveling cross-country and had three huge suitcases and a cooler with us at all times.  We had room for them, and didn't run into them once, or feel cramped.  The room was clean, and on the ground floor.  The sink was leaking at the bottom, but not a huge deal.

Breakfast in the morning was continental, but we had cereal, a muffin, banana and yogurt.  It was cool to eat outside on the deck/patio area.  Two staff members talked to us while we ate, and again were pleasant.  We really enjoyed our stay.  At a low cost, you can't beat the place!

Me and the GF checked into the property for four night stay week of 4th of July (for the fireworks that weren't...but that's whole different story) based on previous reviews and booked a queen room.

The motel consists of (2) two floor bldgs located across the street from the marina in Point Loma section of San Diego. Most travel spots: downtown, zoo, old town, ballpark, etc are within 10-15 drive. Since we didn't rent a car we opted for public transportation to get everywhere which is easily accessible from the motel (busses to trolleys & trains).

At check in, first thing you notice is how genuinely friendly the staff is as you're met with a warm welcome. 24/7 front desk helped as we had a 5:30am check out.

The room itself was small, clean, white with minimal decor. So while it's not in danger of winning most charming room by any stretch, the room & bed were comfortable and adequate. Bathroom was cozy tight with decent water flow in shower...but make sure to pack your own toiletries as there's none included.

But they do offer free wifi, continental breakfast & parking!

My only issue with our stay was around the value of what we payed for what we got. Granted it was a holiday week so we probably paid higher prices than normal...otherwise if you're looking for clean, minimal, no frills accommodations, I recommend this property.

For the price, in this town, the place rocked! As other reviews point out, the rooms are quite small, but provide pretty much all one needs. Bus, walking and biking access to all over the area, including to some fun and also some really nice restaurants was a bonus we were not expecting.  We also enjoyed watching all the various sport fishing boat activities in both the evening and morning. Will come again!

My husband and I stayed here from Labor Day (9/3/12) to Wednesday the 5th. Our room with a view of the bay on the 2nd floor was $65. This $65 included a continential breakfast in the patio in the morning that was better stocked than places we stayed at up the coast for $100 or more that were actually B&Bs (with one of the B's being breakfast!) Others have claimed that their room was too small, but the size of our room for 2 individuals with 2 duffle bags and a suitcase was just right - definitely not too small at all. It was an amazing value for what we received, and this really was refreshing.
My only complaints was the humming of our A/C that came on and off sporadically (there were no other bay view rooms open so we chose to stay in our room) and more importantly, the other residents who used our A/C as a table and took chairs out of their room to smoke and have beers right outside of our room. They never did this that late but it was pretty annoying and rude of these individuals. There were ashtrays on other A/Cs upstairs so I'm assuming this is a regular thing.

Other than that, I loved this place. If I'm ever in San Diego again, I will most definitely stay here again without question. Love it!

This is why there should always be family-owned businesses. No corporate policy statement wall plaque can possibly match what people who actually own and run something can offer: a genuine good attitude. Want to get treated like your business is really appreciated? This is the place. As for the motel... Location - 1 minute walk to harbor and restaurants..Rooms - clean and well-kept...Price - best bargain going.

First and most impressive star is for customer service.  Another for affordability/cleanliness/free breakfast.  Another for location.  That being said, walls are thin.  Neighbors TV left on all night first night and second was kept up from 5 am till 7 am by a smokers cough attack outside my room.  He didn't want to wake his wife.

prices are the low, like budget motels.
5 stars is in relation to other budget motels.
Exterior looks very budgety, but then the surprises begin.
excellent, professional staff, like at a higher grade hotel.
Bed is modest but very comfortable.
Sheets, pillows are the nicer ones.
Soap has soft lather, not like the plastic budget soap.
Nice soft thicker towels, like the nice hotels.
    Shower:  hot.
wifi:  better than best western, you can downstream video.
    cons:  small rooms, budget appearance.

Was looking for an affordable way to spend my vacation at San Diego and was blown away with the customer service. Checked in and was graciously offered refreshments at no charge and the owner even spoke to us regarding if we needed any help with getting around SD or recommendations. Complimentary breakfast and WFI were offered as well. The rooms were decent for the price offered. Felt very safe there as well since they have cameras around the perimeter. The location is right by the SD airport and close by downtown SD as well. All and all a great experience and I appreciate the hospitality you rarely see at franchise motels.

Great location. Great people. Great motel. Try to find a place in San Diego that doesn't have a recent bed bug registry or bed bug report incident and you'll be left with only one reasonable option. The dolphin motel. No its no luxury resort, buy its clean. We checked the bedding, the mattress, the curtains, bathroom all clean. They offer free use of a plethora of things and a free muffin and on in the am sure is nice.

I stayed at this wonderful little motel in September. The staff was amazing they went above and beyond to help me print my tickets for Sea world including letting me use their computers and phone when Sea worlds server crashed. The staff was so nice!

As for the rooms basic and modest but very very clean nothing fancy but that was fine. The continental breakfast was wonderful muffins were great, juice, milk, coffee, yogurt, cereal and fresh fruit. The location was also ideal free parking.

The best part however is staff they make you feel like family. I definitely recommend to all who are not pretentious and require fancy accomodation's a great bang for your buck a diamond in the rough. I love this place!  A++

I have mixed about this motel after i have stayed here 2 times the last year, the last time in aug 2013.

There certainly are some strong reasons to why this place has the good reviews
Here are some of the positives:

*Super friendly & helpful staff (no complaints at all on both my stays)
    *Free parking
*Free wireless internet as well as a laptop you can borrow
    *Coffee & smaller breakfast inc
*Clean rooms with fridge (wich i cant do without)
*Not so far from gaslamp, seaport village etc.  7-8 min drive or 15 $ cab ride.

    Some of the cons then:

*Price.  I dont know if prices has gone up but on a weekend with tax i paid 115 $/ night wich i think is a little too much sven with all great things included.
*Size of the rooms.  Yes they are tiny 1 bed rooms that some have described before.
You have to unpack and tuck away bigger suitcases as they cannot be place open anywhere the room without beeing in the way.
*Beds.  A bit too hard for my sensitive back though i have slept in a lot worse so its not all bad.
*Traffic noise. At about 6:30 in the morning the loud traffic noise can be very annoying.
We had earplugs so that helped a lot but i do not recomend anyone sound sensitive staying here.

I would give it a 3,5 rating if possible mainy because of the staff that really goes out of there way to make you feel at home away from home.

We stayed at the Dolphin Motel for a weekend getaway and I would be happy to stay here again. Compared to other hotels I looked at in the downtown area, this one was much more economical and does not charge for parking (yay!). It is a family owned business and I prefer to help those out rather than a corporate owned property.

The room we had was on the first floor somewhat close to the office. It was small, but very clean. The air conditioner worked VERY well - we had it on low almost the entire time and it got cold very fast. The bed surprised me - I prefer stiffer beds and pillows, but this was borderline uncomfortable. I still slept - but it could have been better.

Breakfast in the morning included juice, coffee, bananas, muffins, and yogurt. Everything was fresh and the coffee was always full. The older gentleman whose picture is on their website (I'm assuming the owner - I believe he said his name was Horace??) greeted us our first morning and gave us suggestions on what to do after we visited the zoo. We took his advice to visit Sunset Cliffs and I am so happy we did! Great photo opportunity. He was very friendly and gave us a map on how to get there as well as point out that water bottles were free in the office!

I would recommend staying here if you are looking for a safe, clean place to sleep with friendly service & free breakfast.

Perfect cheap option in San Diego. The owners take obvious pride in their business. As the readerboard outside said "Why pay more?" VERY clean. Rooms are small, but cleverly designed so that everything fits. No closet doors, but the recessed closet space fits your luggage well. We had three suitcases there just fine. There's a small fridge, a tv mounted on the wall, a small TV tray off to the side so you can have a "Table." A/C unit (which we didn't need on our rainy weekend, but would normally be helpful). Outdoor chairs and small table outside each room.

They include a really nice "continental" breakfast of muffins, yogurt, bananas, coffee each morning. Complimentary bottles of cold water or soda are offered pretty much every time you walk past. Free parking lot!! It's tiny and tight, but works. Office is super helpful, offering to let us use their computer for web check-in and printing out boarding passes. Because we were there during the end of Feb rainstorms, owner kept offering us umbrellas to borrow. But we're from Seattle, so had already packed out raingear. But it was a very nice offer.

Bring a sleepmask because the curtains aren't of the fancier/thicker "blackout" version. Still, it was perfect, offering everything we needed for a really decent price. Our room had one queen and the tiniest twin/single bed. But it slept the 3 of us well. Bathroom is also small, but everything works. No big counters, but a nice basket attached to the wall to store your stuff, and a shelf under the window. Everything is WHITE from the walls to the bedding. But this helps emphasize the "clean" aspect.

Location isn't bad, either. Honestly, San Diego isn't that big of a city. If you have a car/rental, you can get almost any neighborhood in 5 to 10 minutes. There's a nice working waterfront/marina to look at the boats and watch pelicans fly by. Mitch's Seafood is across the street on the water and DELICIOUS (and reasonably priced, too). Their breakfast was especially great.

A little place off the beaten path..just around the corner from all of the "city lights" and a tucked away gem.  This small and family owned motel has a continental breakfast in the courtyard, immaculately made beds in small no frills rooms.  The bathrooms are small like broom closets however...how much room do you need to brush your teeth?  The young man at the front desk was amazing! He gave us a choice of rooms and even showed us the rooms before we decided, helped carry in our luggage, and offered a space heater if extra heat was needed.  He referred to me as Ms. (last name) through our entire stay.  The customer service from this young man was delightful! I would stay here time and time again! 2 thumbs up for this cute little motel off the beaten path!

Spent the weekend here. 75 bucks a night isn't bad for the location. All the harbor view rooms were booked so we stayed in the building next door to the harbor view . Everyone yelp that we read pretty much sums it up. Small rooms (no problem all you need a room is to sleep anyways) there's too much to do around the area to be nestled in your hotel room. Everything's white. Pretty old school.   Rooms were clean and cozy. Shower was pretty old and odd.. Stand up in like A 2x2 area lol. Good muffins, bananas, coffee, yogurt and trader joes OJ served in the courtyard until 11am which is nice . You can hear ALOT thru the walls and out side.  I am a light sleeper so I kept waking up but my babe slept just fine. Lots of TV channels... Comfy beds . Housekeeping every day. Workers were real nice.. Gotta back up outta Yer parking spot .. Tight squeeze.     Good area. Everything is within 15 minute drive.  would go back!

The Dolphin is great. I give it four stars for what it is. A clean, quite place to stay while doing the tourist thing in SD.
It's not a luxury resort, but it worked great for us.

Our three kids got a room with two beds, while us parents had a queen room.
Cost was the same as I spend on business at the Wyndham for a single.
We were able to use that money on seeing the town.

It is an older building. You will hear your neighbors. The rooms are not huge.
You will need to drive or cab rather than walk or train to get places. Unless you're fishing, many of the charters are right across the street. But, if this is ok with you the Dolphin is perfect.

Rooms are clean and comfortable. Exterior is clean and well kept. Continental type breakfast is complimentary. All the staff are friendly and helpful, if you don't have an agenda they can recommend some great spots.
All the guests (when we were there) were respectful of noise levels and pretty laid back.

I'd recommend them for a family on a budget, no-frills couples or singles.
I won't hesitate to stay there next time our family is in town.

This review is long overdue! I went on a fishing trip in San Diego and wanted a place close to our dock and boy was I lucky to find dolphin motel. This place is clean, affordable and is perfect location if you want some seafood and plan on going fishing!! Staff was nice and even gave us tourists some local favorite eateries to check out and where to go for touristy stuff.

This isn't a resort but they have the basics and that's what matters! Perfect price for what I needed.

I stayed at this hotel on my first visit to SD and absolutely loved it. Although it's a little small it is very cozy and relaxing. As soon as I arrived I was greeted by whom I believe is the owner, he was such a sweetheart. My sister and I had gone to SD on a girls trip, completely clueless about the city. The owner then greeted us with a map of nearby locations, gave us a brief overview on how they run the place, and told us that if we needed anything to just let him know. The staff was very good, I haven't stayed at many places where they greet you in such manner that you cannot wait to come back. This place is amazing and I highly recommend it.

This is a motel.  Don't expect it to be anything else and you will be very happy with your choice to stay here.

    PROS:
    - Super affordable ($85 for two adults and two kids on a Tuesday night in December with 24 hour advance reservation)
    - The service was friendly and helpful.
    - The rooms were super clean.
    - The beds were comfortable enough.  There were plenty of extra blankets in the closet.
    - They let us park our car for FREE for five days while we flew to Maui out of San Diego Airport ($10 cab ride from Motel to SAN)
    - Large fridge in room
    - Conveniently located to San Diego airport and Sea World

    CONS:
    - The room was bright at night because of surrounding lights
    - The room was small (but perfect to sleep in for four people and a couple suitcases)

Yelp led us to stay here and we were very happy with our stay.  Sure, the rooms are very white.  They are also very clean.  Sure the rooms are small, but they are a good place to rest your head.

LOVED staying here! Hotel staff very friendly & accommodating. The rooms were clean upon arrival, and cleaned EVERY DAY (even big hotel chains don't clean their rooms daily any more). I loved coming back from a full day of walking & sight-seeing to a freshly made bed & new towels. There is a mini-fridge in the room, which we used to keep our drinks & snacks cold.

They have daily continental breakfast that includes coffee, water, juices, fruit and muffins from Trader Joe's (I believe). They also have a mini-fridge full of yogurt, and a microwave. Water bottles are always free, and you can purchase sodas & small snacks 24 hours a day in the office. They also have toiletries for sale if you forgot something.

I felt very safe here- there are security cameras around the entire building, and our room was a corner room on the 2nd floor. There are plenty of places that were nice to walk to, as well. Several bars & restaurants within a 2 minutes walk, a liquor/convenience store, and the marina was beautiful as the sun was setting. If you're into getting tattoos & palm readings, they, too, were only a minute walk away.

The rooms themselves are small, but there was plenty of room for the 2 of us that stayed. I will say that if you're tall, you're going to have a problem in the shower. I'm only 5 feet tall and the top of my head was nearly at the top of the shower nozzle. I couldn't imagine being 6'2" & 250 pounds and trying to comfortably take a shower. I'm also not a huge fan of the shower stall (just a personal preference), but it was okay for the 4 days we were there. My only other peeve was the parking lot. The spots are diagonal, & backing out was quite a challenge. I did my best to get the spots closest to the street. This gave my tiny Nissan Versa the most room to maneuver.

All in all, a great experience for a short visit to the west coast. I would totally stay again! If you're content not having a fancy resort-style stay, then consider staying here. Also, we didn't have to drive more than 12 or so minutes to get to ANYTHING (zoo, Balboa park, downtown SD, Old Towne). Very convenient location.

Honey and I had a wedding to attend last weekend,  at the last minute we decided to go for the entire weekend.  We  checked out Yelp to find cheap suggestions, that's when we found this little gem with great reviews.

Rooms are very small, but quaint,  super clean, plus a mini fridge.  On the plus side, the bed was comfortable. Steve the Manager is super friendly, we weren't familiar with the restaurants in the area, he offered some really good suggestions.  As a matter of fact, everyone that works there is really nice, even the maid.

The location is right across the street from the harbor, and close to everything. The price is right on for what you get - no frills here, but you do get a nice little free breakfast to start the day.

    Would we go back....Hell Yah!

Management on duty 24/7 and quiet hours are faithfully enforced. Family owned and better customer service than any place I've stayed. They genuinely enjoy their business and their customers. Comfortable outdoor area composed of three four seat and many two seat tables in the breakfast area. Free use of many needed items plus FREE wifi!!! The Dolphin Motel was perfect for us. We stayed 5 nights there recently.

The rooms are not spacious, but it was just the two of us so that was fine. The rooms were however super clean, with housekeeping service every day. The small fridge in our room was very convenient - we used it for some waters, sodas, a six pack of beer, and some restaurant leftovers. The bathroom had a standup shower, so if you're looking for a bathtub to lounge in, then this probably isn't for you. We had two chairs outside our room on the "balcony" walkway, overlooking the marina. After reading other reviews I specifically asked for a room in the main building (the building overlooking the marina) on the 2nd floor. Room 28 looked like it would be ideal - its a corner room with only one neighboring room wall, plus the "balcony seating" area in front of it was bigger than the other rooms.

The location was also perfect for us. Just a 15 minute drive from the airport, and another 15 min drive over to OB. Most other SD areas and attractions are a short drive also. There were lots of restaurant options within walking distance (Mitch's Seafood, The Brigantine, Starbucks, Ralph's grocery store, etc).

We also liked the complimentary breakfast every morning. There was coffee, fruit, muffins, yogurt. It's not tons of food, bit it was perfect for us to start the day.

Overall, for a clean, friendly, budget-conscious place to stay in SD for two adults, this place was perfect.

This place is awesome they are super friendly and will do anything to make you more comfortable. There is a small free breakfast in the morning, and the normal cleaning of your room. However, there customer service is perfect they even ran after my car when they found out that my wife paid on card and then when i arrived that night i payed for it so we over paid, they gave us our refund. Their is a flat screen tv inside the room and an A/C, free wifi, Fridge ect. It is well decorated too gives a very ocean feel too it. Don't worry about noise or smell they ask people turn down there volume form 9-9. Highly recommend this place.

This is a basic although clean and very well located motel. Great service mostly by the owners. For this Point Loma location, it's a bargain. The rooms are small and very simple. The continental breakfast is a little sparse. Typically, I rate this type of motel no higher than 3 stars. But this well owner managed place in a great neighborhood along with the cleanliness, bump it up to a 4 star for me.

I want to start off by saying this place is dirt cheap. You won't find a cheaper place to stay in this area without bed bugs or rude people.

    Pros:
    Right on the harbor
    Nice part of town
Nicest staff I have ever experienced
    Free WiFi
    Free parking
    Free breakfast
    Clean
    Fridge in the room
    Super cheap

    Cons:
    Thin walls
    Small
    Some imperfect finishings

Overall this isn't the nicest looking motel you will find but it is the best bang for the buck and has outstanding customer service.  I cannot emphasize how caring the staff is and how helpful they are. We asked the front desk guy if he could recommend a good restaurant and he was nice enough to pull up some options on his computer and then offered to write down the driving directions. In the morning we were leaving on our bikes and the staff asked if we wanted waters and snacks to take with us. When we checked out we were asked about our stay and if they're was anything they could have done to make it better. Then they gave us more water for the road.

    Love the service!!!

The Dolphin was just what we needed for the last two nights of our epic San Diego/Vegas vacation.  The funds were running low, we were exhausted from walking around Vegas, and we just wanted to chill in an affordable little "mom and pop" while we enjoyed a couple of more days in sunny SD.  The Dolphin definitely fit the bill.  It sits in the Point Loma area among bigger name hotels (in fact, it's right between a Ramada and a Comfort Inn); the building was clearly built in a different era, but that's part of its charm.  The family that owns the Dolphin takes obvious pride in their property, and have managed to keep it up well without losing its kitsch or venturing into the territory of becoming a trendy/boutique hotel.

We first checked in at the front desk and were greeted by Thomas, who gave us a couple of free sodas and a set of room keys (yes, actual keys).  He was very welcoming and accommodating.  We proceeded to our room, yes it was tiny but had everything we needed - there was a queen bed, small closet, 3/4 bathroom, and lots of storage.  And best of all it was impeccably clean, with a crisp white-on-white color scheme, plenty of towels, and a flat-screen TV on the wall.  We were tired so we sat on the little porch outside of our room and enjoyed a pizza, some beer, and a game of cards before we turned in.  The next morning we enjoyed their continental breakfast, again on the patio, and chatted with their super nice housekeeper, Judy, who talked about what a great family this is to work for.  We even met the owner, who asked how our stay was - always nice to have a personal touch.

Of the six hotels we stayed in on this trip, the Dolphin was the only one with wi-fi that actually worked!  They also had free parking, and were in a safe neighborhood yet only a few minutes drive from everywhere (including Stone Brewing World at Liberty Station, and the awesome Fathom Bistro Bait & Tackle - two of our favorite stops on the trip).  For more traditional fare, there is a Denny's and a couple of fast food places up the street.

"Location Location Location". One of the nicest vacations I have taken was based out of this budget friendly motel.  The staff here are welcoming and accommodating.  The rooms although small are very neat and clean.   We frequent San Diego and love to run in every direction. This is the place to do it from.   Highly recommended if you are looking for a comfortable quality bed and clean room on a budget.

I called Dolphin to find a room for New Year's Eve just a couple days before and they were extremely helpful in getting us into the last available room. This cute little motel is located in the Point Loma area right by the harbor and with close access to downtown San Diego, the beaches, and food/coffee.

They offer coffee, muffins, and bananas for morning breakfast outside on the patio. While we were grabbing morning coffee on the first day, the owner (a sweet older man) approached us and gave us suggestions on what to do that day, giving us a map to get to Cabrillo National Monument, the tide pools and Ocean Beach. He was so attentive and very clearly invested in taking care of his hotel's guests, which is something that will keep us coming back!

The only slight downside is that the walls are very thin. The first night we were there, we were sitting on the bed against the wall, talking at a normal speaking noise level and the people next to us woke up. There are signs posted up for "Quiet Hours", so if you're looking for a place to host a louder get-together or want to make noise in general, this may not be the best place for you.

Overall, this is a fantastic bang-for-your-buck in the San Diego area and is perfect for a weekend trip. We will be going back!

I am writing this review the day after staying overnight at the Dolphin Motel. First, I want to say this is actually the second time I stayed here. I will tell you not much has changed and that is a good thing.
It's a simple motel with a great price and a million-dollar view. Everything is clean and comfy. The breakfast is nice and satisfying. The experience is exceptional from check-in-to check-out.
Overall, I recommend the Dolphin Motel highly. If your looking for a safe, comfortable stay with a cheap price and great view, this place is for you! With the money you've saved staying here, I very highly recommend checking out Miguel's Mexican Food just down the street. Excellent food and great service. Win-win all the way!!!

Pros: nice staff, clean rooms, easy to find, free continental breakfast, excellent price, across the street from the harbor (great place to walk), cheap little snack bar and toiletry selection in the lobby, TV has a lot of channels, nice little courtyard

Cons: parking lot is a little difficult to get out of, rooms pretty small, walls thin, bed not the most comfortable

    Highly recommend this place.
