Beautiful resort. I have not had the pleasure of staying the night (hopefully my thoughtful husband will reserve a room for our anniversary), but I was there for a company sponsored dinner and was blown away by it.  The service was amazing, the resort was beautiful, it felt like we were in another world.

I had tea at the Grand Del Mar over Christmas (2009).  The service was impeccable, the food was well presented and excellent, the surroundings were elegant.  The hotel is simply beautiful.  I have also been to the restaurant several times and the food is always excellent and the service matches.  This is a little oasis in San Diego.  And there is a spa!

This place is amazing!  The grounds are spectacular and the rooms are quiet and pretty.  Everything about it is comfortable and luxurious.  The food in both Addison and Amaya is delicious.  Thank you on behalf of the Rancho Santa Fe Unit of Rady Children's Hospital Auxiliary.

Just got back from a honeymoon in January at the Grand Del Mar.  Absolutely perfect.  Although I guess it was off season, so the hotel was not very crowded, we had the absolute run of the place.  Although off season in Del Mar certainly beats everything else around right now short of Hawaii in terms of warm.  The Grand Room overlooking the adult pool is their base line room but there was nothing base line about it.  (The pool is also large and quite nice).  The hotel is about ten minute drive from the beach and located in a very nice and quiet part of San Diego.  Room was over the top nice, the staff from valets to check in to maid service to coffee refreshing service were almost obsessed with trying to make sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed.  All the modern luxury items you expect in a five star place.  Spectacular views all over the grounds.  Brunch at the club house grill sitting on the warm patio was the absolute perfect way to unwind.    Although the rates are not cheap, (about mid 300's) for the type of over the top luxury we got you would probably spend two to three times as much flying to Maui to get the same type of luxury and weather.

The hotel also has a fantastic looking golf course if you are into golf and is also has a five star restaurant called the Addison on the property (which they shuttle you to in a Benz).  If you go, you have to try the Addison, although be careful..  I spent more at the Addison for dinner than on a night staying at the Grand Del Mar..  Well worth the price though..  The place is filled with experienced, talented, and eager to please chefs, waiters, and staff..  It's the closest thing you can get to being a judge on Iron Chef..  They keep bringing out perfect dish after perfect dish..  If you are a veggie or keep kosher, let them know before you start ordering though, as that does impact the options but my new wife who is a veggie loved it just as much as I did..

We had our wedding at the Grand Del Mar and we couldn't be happier. No detail is overlooked at this hotel. The food was amazing. Our guests were blown away by the beauty of the place. Paige was incredibly patient and informative as we moved through the planning process. And the service they provided us with was outstanding, both during the wedding and our stay afterward. I really can't say enough good things about this resort. We are already planning on returning very soon.

Hands down my favorite hotel in San Diego and perhaps one of the most relaxing and aesthetically pleasing resorts ive seen in California.  It blows me away that such a great hotel has been open for a year yet seems to have such low occupancy compared to other hotels of similar caliber such as the Montage or the St. Regis.  My guess is that this is largely due to the Grand's location in sparsely populated Northern San Diego County, because the hotel loses no points when it comes to luxury and service.  Food at the Amaya cafe is great, particularly breakfast.  Only down side of the hotel is that the beautiful pool is pretty much void of any young or attractive people to mingle with as you might find at a comparable hotel in LA, so it's definitely a bring-your-own-hottie type of scene.

I got married at the Grand Del Mar a year and a half ago, and we also stayed at the Grand Del Mar on our wedding night, and for three additional nights for our honeymoon, originally because I was unable to travel, but in the end, it was the perfect honeymoon, a dream honeymoon for me.  As a wedding venue, I could not imagine a more perfect experience, or more professional people to plan/coordinate all of the wedding details on site.  As far as our honeymoon, we felt like royalty.  It literally was the best week of my life, as far as how happy I was, but that would not have been possible if the staff in every department had not gone above and beyond to make sure we had everything we could want.  We were relaxed, pampered and made to feel like V.I.P.s the whole week.  I wish it were not so far out of our price range such that we could stay there more often. I hope to stay there for a wedding anniversary one day in the future.  We did go to their holiday open house last year (2011) at Christmas, and it was superb!  There is a reason that they are five star-five diamond rated, and on Conde Nast Traveler's list of finest hotels in the U.S.  Thank you!

The Grand Hotel is beautiful and very peaceful. I don't even feel like I'm in Southern Cali when I go here. Grand is very posh, tasteful and the staff are very professional, unlike other boutique hotels in the area. This  is a great place for a night away from the noise of downtown, or just for late afternoon drinks and a light dinner.

I definitely give the hotel five stars! It's beautiful and its employees are super friendly, which made my stay there very nice. The only reason I took off a star is because I think the food was not very good (I had lunch at Amaya and grabbed a quick breakfast at the hotel cafe), which was a great disappointment to me because great food is part of having a spectacular vacation experience.  Regardless, I'd definitely stay at Grand Del Mar again. However, next time I may pack a picnic. =)

Upscale old world style spa and resort in Del Mar? More like Carmel Valley, but either way, this resort is top notch and the spa is unbeatable - I had an excellent massage experience.

Personally the Grand Del Mar may be a bit stuffy for me, but the rooms are amazing, TV and phones in the bathroom...and every other amenity under the sun.

Recommend if you are looking for rest and relaxation - golf and spa. Great overall service will make your stay memorable.

This place feels like Heaven; it's paradise on earth.  Granted it cost me close to a Grand (like their name) for a one night stay in the Prado Suite, it was the most beautiful and comfortable stay in all of my hotel stays so far.  Aside from the 2 bathrooms which are ridiculously huge and elegant, the King size bed that you melt right into, and the upscale and charming decor, the service is impeccable.  From the moment you walk right in to the moment you leave, they treat you like a queen.  They are not pretentious at all and I do not look like their average customer who seems to be upper wealthy class.  My guests were amazed at the place from the moment we drove onto property.  Room service was great - the food was superb.  Also pricey for breakfast ($25 for the Grand Breakfast), but everyone loved an devoured it.  Every inch and every corner of this place is beautiful.  I fall in love with this place the more and more I visit.  And there are great cafes and restaurants that you must try if you stay here.  It is a perfect place to stay, even if you live in San Diego.

This review is for the afternoon tea service which we recently enjoyed on a Saturday afternoon.  The hotel as others have stated is absolutely stunning and makes the cost of the tea worth the price.  However the service itself was disappointing, as I'm somewhat of a tea connossieur others may not care about what we found as shortcomings.  We arrived at our appointed reservation time and were seated at a lobby couch with a table that had been placed in front of it.  This made reaching over for the tea a bit awkward - at other high-end tea services they are offered at a regular table which is much more comfortable.  The 3-course service includes sandwiches, scones and pastries.  The sandwiches were not edible, they obviously had been prepared that morning and were very stale and flavorless.  The scones were also stale.  The pastries were quite delicious, especially the mini eclairs - however when we asked for an extra (we even offered to pay) we were refused, despite the fact that only 1 other table was full that day.  Would I go again?  Yes, it's a great way to entertain out of town guests on a rainy day and the grounds are so beautiful it makes the mediocre tea service worth it.

What can I say...it's my home away from home! This resort is stunningly gorgeous in every detail. Always fresh huge arrangements of flowers throughout, marble fixtures everywhere and polished yet old world authentic touches. Service is outstanding and very accommodating. It is so pretty that I chose to get married there. The Chapel could not have been a more perfect location which then funneled all our guests into the foyer then into the Elizabeth ballroom. The set up was absolutely perfect for which turned out to be a rainy day. None of the guests ever had to step outside. I live in the area and am actually a member of the club as well. We go here frequently for dinner, golf and sometimes even make a night out at club M. We always take out of town guests here because we couldn't recommend a better choice! I highly recommend going here for dinner and then walking around the gorgeous grounds. The rooms are superb so if you are looking for a place overnight, then you are in for a treat!!

Most beautiful photos ever and they allowed us to go to the presidential suite for pix and upgraded our room to an amazing suite. Brought us beautiful decorated chocolate strawberries.

Fantastic Resort experience!  Worth every dime.  The rooms are spacious and well laid out.  We had a view of the gardens and golf course on the wing over from the reflection pool.  I would imagine there is not a bad view from a room any where in this hotel.  The architect, Addisson, laid it out with infinite attention to detail.  I love the pass thru from the living area to the bathroom that you can close off if you are wanting too - but can leave open as you desire.  The tub is extra deep and with the tv in the bathroom, one might not want to venture out to one of the pools on the property.  But do!  The relaxation pool is salt water and has soothing music underwater.  The poolside service is great, everything about the resort is service oriented and opulent.  Only, and I truly mean only, draw back was they forgot to turn on the heat in the room.  Which sounds simple enough to do right?  Well, as you would expect each room is climate controlled to the degree so you don't just flip a switch.  It took a couple  minutes and I am pretty techno savvy - and I got it.  But I thought, my mom or grandparents would have NEVER figured it out.  I am sure they would have been up there fast to fix with a call to the front desk but I was surprised with all the other little minutae details they cover that this was not one.

As far as the previous reviewer and the gold frames - I agree they are not my taste but having a warm toned gold accented room with a big black tv mounted in the room would not fit at tall this allows your eye to notice everything in the room not just the black box on the wall.

I will say our scale altered 1 to 2 pounds within seconds of getting on it - but that just gave me the excuse not to weigh myself the rest of our trip.  So, it was a good thing in the end.

The Spa - Indulge Yourself!!  I had a facial from Jen and she has magic fingers.  I loved every minute and for the first time ever of getting facials, I did not get the hard sell to buy "their products".  That made it even more amazing.  It was 60 full minutes of treatment.  Not 5 minutes of product sell, 30 minutes of treatment, 5 more minutes of product plug and 20 minutes of "relaxation" in the room alone with spa music.  It was a true 60 minute facial that left me wanting another.  Thank you Jen - you are fantastic!

Come here and experience a true 5 star hotel - you will not regret it.

I've stayed at or visited comparable resorts in other vacation locations. The extreme detail in how the room and hotel is appointed, the beauty of the grounds and service all contribute to an amazing and serene adult vacation experience. Comparable to more expensive resorts such as the Montage in Orange County, but still lesser in price because it's still relatively unknown as you can tell by its quietness around. This place is still a gem. We loved that it felt remote and serene, yet only a 5 minute drive from Del Mar beach town and restaurants and shops.

We did the day spa package and the spa facilities are top rate. Never been to a nicer spa. It isn't cheap, but when you see the facility and service, you see what you're paying for. Breakfast buffet was fabulous, as well as the view from the terrace.

This is for their High Tea Service only.

However, BEAUTIFUL RESORT. I would love to stay here. Its amazing.

Tea Service - it is held in the library.
The portions were extremely small for the price. Very small sandwiches, tiny, I mean TINY, scones and miniature desserts.

I think we paid around $50/pp.

    The service was excellent, however.

I would not go there for high tea.

But I want someone to send me there for the night.

We were lucky enough to spend a full week at this resort recently. If you ever dreamed of what it would be like in an Italian villa, with luxurious rooms and marble baths, then this place will give you an idea. Situated about 20 miles outside of San Diego, this resort will transport you to the foothills of Tuscany (not as nice of a view admittedly as Tuscany). You literally get immersed in your surroundings. The grounds are gorgeous and there are hiking trails (hiking map available through concierge desk) that will take you around the resort grounds. An adjoining golf course looked quite impressive.

The staff and service are tops, and it is evident that guests came first in this place. The children's center, which we used a few times, is a fantastic addition to the services offered. Our room had a tiny private balcony, overlooking the spa pool (adults only) and was extremely comfortable. Housekeeping did a magnificent job in keeping our room spotless every day. On a few nights, turndown service placed freshly plucked rose petals on the bathtub rim and valet trays. Of course, what would a resort of this caliber be without a "feels like heaven" spa, whose service and rooms were right in-line with the resort. We ate at both Amaya and Addison while we were there and enjoyed both very much, but they were very different experiences. (I will post separate reviews under the restaurants.) Much time was spent at the main pool by my husband and daughter. It was heated so there was absolutely no chill factor when you stuck your feet in. There was even speakers underwater so you could have music while you swam.

A fabulous time all around, and I would go back to visit again. Go check it out for yourselves -- it is a great way to getaway without having to renew your passport.

Where do I start? UNBELIEVABLE! My daughters treated me to a very special day/evening stay at the most beautiful hotel we have ever stayed at. The room was beyond beautiful... they did not miss a trick on anything.
The staff was so gracious and eager to make our stay an enjoyable one. Atitudes, smiles and so helpful with information.
Andrew, the wine somalie was so knowledgeable about the wine and we all learned something. Because we couldn't get a reservation for dinner because they were so booked, he comped us 3 glasses of wine and would not take a tip! Where does that ever happen?
We went to Club M for tappas and cocktails and danced and had a ball. BTW, the food was incredible! Our sweet coctail waitress was on top of everything. We then took the shuttle back to the hotel and sat in the lobby bar and had some wine. The staff again... so eager to please. Charles was making sure that everyone was being taken care of and directs you if you look lost.
Then there was Kele that works in the pool area, such a great sense of humor and just so pleasant to talk to. Answered every ? we we shot his way.
The property is so beautiful and so many photo opps. The flowers in the main lobby are so beautiful, you don't want to leave them!
I have stayed in a lot of nice hotels but I believe this is the most beautiful hotel in the world. You have set the bar... please keep it that way. Can't wait to stay again. Next time it will be more then 1 night for sure!
Also, the young man, that checked us out this a.m. was gracious to takie the valet parking fee off the girls bill. We left there wrapped in warm fuzzies. Run! Do not pass go... and take someone you love there and they will know how much they matter to you.
Even the valet staff was unbelievable.
The love is in the detail... and The Grand has nailed it!
Thanks for making us feel so special... I will NEVER forget our "GRAND" experience!

Like the rest of the hotel, the conference rooms are pretty spiffy.  Their hosted bar had a nice range of product (wine,  beer, liquor) for such a compact set up.  The prices they were charging were, as the kids are saying nowadays, cray cray.  I recall paying around fifteen bucks for a modest pour of Talbott Kali-Hart Pinot noir.  The Pinot was delicious.  For a little more, you can get a whole bottle at a wine shop.  The Stone IPA bottles were eight, I believe.  The prices weren't unexpected, but they still elicited a 'daaaaamn' from me underneath my breath.  I was pleasantly surprised by their food.  I was expecting delicate and tiny portions but after each course I was satisfied with the flavors and a full stomach.  The salad was my favorite yelp.com/biz_photos/k91N… .  The dessert yelp.com/biz_photos/k91N… had a custard on a shortbread cookie, espresso chocolate thing and a cream soda float.  Of all the courses, the dessert was just nice.

This is a stunningly beautiful hotel and resort, and it is a shame that it doesn't seem to be at capacity all the time.  I have been here for multiple different occasions--dinner at Amaya, beauty appointments at the spa, high tea in the library, a breakfast seminar at the conference center, private dinner meeting in the wine room, and a rehearsal dinner on the lawn.  The food has always been good, and the settings have been flawless--particularly the lobby at holiday season.  The service is generally very good as well.  If you live in San Diego, this is a great mini-getaway.

I stayed here awhile back and was impress with the everything about the resort.  From the moment I drove up to the guard gate till checking out everything exceeded my expectation.  The rooms are spacious with nice sitting area outside which overlooks the courtyard.  The restaurant on the property is a must.  If you are a foodie and looking for a great meal you must give this a try.  The bar has a really cool and relaxing feeling with stiff drinks.  Room service isn't shabby either. The really cool thing that gives the resort a 5 star is everyone calls you by name.  I cant every remember the name of people I work with!!

Also, I mumbled under my breath that I needed a car wash and the valet graciously agreed to have my ride washed and ready to go (for a fee of course).   So, if you are looking for a place to be pampered and just lounge this is a must.

Me and my husband recently stayed 5 nights at this beautiful resort for our honeymoon. We could not have been happier, the entire staff is super friendly, nice and very helpful. Every single person went out of their way for us (except 1 waiter at Amaya who offered us a free dessert for our honeymoon and then forgot about us for 30 mins!) But that was a fluke because everyone else was incredible. Resort and rooms were beautiful, we had a room right outside the adult pool and could not have been happier to step out on our patio every morning and walk to the pool. A few people to mention: John Pierre at the pool, Betty at the concierge desk who booked us kayak tours and car service, Sean at the golf course and our two drivers who had good suggestions and were always on time. One day we asked for a cab to go to San Diego (which was too far for the complimentary vehicle to take us) after the cab was not even 5 minutes late the car service offered to take us there, in a 2011 BMW!

We took advantage of the spa services (try the Refined therapy!) the golf course, the pool and the restaurants. We could not have been happier. Bets hotel I've ever stayed at, hope to be back soon!

The grandest of all afternoon tea experiences I have ever had.  I celebrated my birthday there this past weekend and I was in for a complete surprise!  Driving in to the resort already felt like I was on vacation and then walking around the resort felt even more majestic and royal.  The service for afternoon tea was superb, with so much attention to detail and constant flow of tea. I like how they serve the 3 courses separately so you can anticipate the next dish.  I loved the egg salad sandwich the best even though all of the 5 sandwiches were so delicious.  I didn't even have room for the desserts at the very end.  My favorite tea was the white ambrosia, tasted very similar to the white coconut creme from Tea Gallerie.  This was the best way to celebrate my 30th birthday!

We really loved staying here.  We were here for a private conference but I could easily envision having a wedding here.

The photos on this Yelp page do not do the place justice.  Did the owner/ manager of the Grand Del Mar not upload photos?

This is as good as it gets, and breakfast or lunch can be done very reasonably!
Tell the front gate you are going in for lunch -parking is free, just tip the valet.  Eat in the Amaya restaurant & Lounge and live like a king at a very reasonable price!  I had a hamburger for lunch today and it was gourmet.  The girls had a grilled shrimp salad that they loved.  Played a little croquet after and enjoyed the view from some rocking chairs.  Finished the experience with some $2 gelato from the gift shop!

The hotel was nice, the ambiance was serene, the bed was comfortable, the linens were good quality, the service was top notch & on top of those, it really were the little things that make it a 5-star hotel. For example, the elevator door was open waiting for you instead of you waiting for it, the concierge sending items up to the room instead of you schlepping down to the lobby, etc.

Their breakfast buffet was also good & the cost was as expected at a hotel like this ($35/person). If you're looking for a quiet relaxing stay at a very nice hotel in the San Diego area, this one is highly recommended.

We have stayed at the Grand several times and have always loved it!  I lost a diamond earring in the room last weekend.  They sent a team of people to scour the room and they found it wedged under the bed in a place no one could have found it without serious help.  I was so taken by their dedication and caring for my loss.  It's so great to stay somewhere that the staff is professional and courteous and caring!!!  Disaster averted!

The rooms are spacious, the bed is comfy, the view of the pool is nice and the bathrooms are large-great shower, more than enough room for two people to get ready at the same time, small tv you can see from the shower, big tub...Problem was when you're paying this much for a room, everything should work and it didn't. Our mini bar key didn't open the locked cabinet with glasses, one of the sinks didn't drain and the scale didn't work. I know, who goes to a nice hotel to step on a scale-regardless it should work.

Everyone we encountered was very nice, including the valet who turned up the heat when I was standing near a heat lamp outside-he didn't even ask if I was cold. That was a nice touch.

I would like to see this place work out all kinks, i.e., have fully functioning rooms and lose the gold picture frame mounted around the tv's and then I'll consider staying here again.

I've had the opportunity to stay in several top-notch hotels both in the States and abroad: the Plaza in New York, The Met in London, a Days Inn in Paducah (okay, scratch that last one).  The Grand Del Mar takes the best elements of all the hotels I've ever had the pleasure of temporarily calling home and rolls them into one excellent resort.

I stayed at the Grand Del Mar for a few days over New Year's 2008.  The rooms are large and luxurious, but not at all grandiose or "stuffy"; they're modern and comfortable.  And oh, the amenities!  Flat screen TVs in both the bedroom and the bathroom?  Wonderful.  (And really, who doesn't want to watch Spider-man while showering?)  On both the large scale (a truly magnificent bathroom) and the small scale (iPod compatible alarm clocks), the rooms are fantastic.

The hotel itself is equally wonderful: the lobby bar is dark and inviting and the view from our balcony was stunning.  In short, I give the Grand Del Mar my highest recommendation.  If I could live there, I would.  And I would start each day with the Amaya restaurant's waffles with roasted pear.  Yum.

Yea, it was a VERY nice stay.  Property was B E A U T I F U L!  The staff was more than accommodating, and the price was right about where I expected it to be.  The restaurants on the property were very good, which is quite rare for many 5 star resorts.  I would DEFINITELY return.

Best resort ever.    I'm sitting in a very nice Hyatt in Scottsdale, but our stay at the Grand del Mar last year spoils this    Nothing compares - service was impeccable, they don't charge you for extras, my daughter forgot her toothbrush and they bought us an entire dental kit in a fancy gift bag, amazing gym, etc.     I could go on and on.    Only option is that both restaurants are very expensive.   We had a nice breakfast of bagels and fruit every morning from the little cafe.   We'd get that and the free breakfast and dine on our little patio.     My husband and I went out for a run and as we were approaching the hotel they came out to meet us with cold bottles of water.   Can't wait to go back.

We stayed at the resort for two nights and found the property to be tastefully done and beautifully executed overall.  The setting was comfortable and elegant and quite beautiful.  Room was spacious with a soaking tub and large bath area.  Ritz-like level of attention to detail in the rooms and all the property for that matter.

And then the things that stood out - first and foremost, the staff.  They had a complete can-do attitude from the driver to the bellmen to the concierge to room service.  Then the golf course, even the starter (!) was totally cool - actually gave me thumbs up and smiled looking out the window when i made the turn (we should have him bronzed).  The cart guys were helpful and the starter let me out early because they could see I was itchin to go play the fazio layout so i was solo and first off.  Go from the tips, its a beast but it is quite well designed and definitely has some visually intimidating (and just plain intimidating) par fours and a hellacious 240 yard par three into the wind with water left from start to finish when you get around to 17 tee.

The only area that would keep me from returning was our treatment in the bar.  the bartenders regarded themselves pretty highly if you know what i mean - and gave us the feeling that they would rather we weren't there.  They spoke spanish to each other stealthily and then were openly ridiculing the male guests and joking about the ladies in the place - thinking they couldn't be understood - my wife doesn't understand spanish, but i do and the stuff they were saying wasn't cool.  I managed a few bars and restaurants in my early years and this felt very much like one does as a tourist in a mexican bar sometimes - your money is welcome but really they don't dig you and they subtly let you know it.  We dropped over a c note in drinks and appetizers that night and felt like we were troubling them the whole time - would've left after one beer if the playoff game would've been on in our room.

But, that aside, this place is a gem.  Kudos to the man behind building it and the style with which he executed his vision.  thanks for a great stay.

We visited San Diego for the first time and looked for the "best" hotel in the city.  We get there and there's no reservation for us even though we had made this about 6 weeks prior.  The manager said, it had been cancelled a week previously?!  He did make room for us with a roll away bed for our son and I must say, the hotel was one of the best I've stayed in and we all had a smashing time in the city with the hostel adding to the enjoyment.  The food, the pools, the customer service were all great and if you were ever in the city of San Diego, the hotel to be in is The Grand Del Mar!

Just got back from my bachelorette party and my girls were nice enough to book this place for me for the wknd! The place was soooooooo gorgeous!! Beautiful grounds, golf course, lobby, library, etc. The room itself was spacious and the bathroom was huge.

My favorite thing though was the service. The staff here from the front desk, concierge, valet, bellmen, etc were all soooooo nice and so accomodating. They all remember your name and treat you like rock stars. I would definitely come here again and think it is well worth the money.

Another cool thing was that they let you use the spa facilities (jacuzzi, spa, sauna, etc) if you are patrons of the hotel. I thought that was a nice touch since some other hotels charge you a stupid day pass just to use their facilities. It was great because it was too cold for the pool so us girls got to relax and veg out in the hot tub at the spa. We had treatments there the first day too and it was the best massage I have ever had!

Make sure to check out Addison during your stay too. Great good and dining experience!

My husband and I had our wedding at the Grand Del Mar.  What an experience!  The customer service is AMAZING!  From the coordinator, to the front desk to the valets everyone was wonderful.  Paige was on maternity leave so Corina was assigned to fill in and I can't say enough nice things about her.  We had a few mishaps and Corina handled them like a pro.  John (it's a common name but he started out as a valet in Twentynine Palms) remembered every detail we told him.  We went to Club M and ate at Amaya  during our stay...what can I say? Just one wonderful experience after the next.  All of our guests who stayed at the hotel only had positive things to say as well. We can't wait to go back for our one year anniversary!

A stunning property to say the least.  I stayed there this last weekend and enjoyed a spa treatment.  This hotel is by far, the finest in so cal....above anything in San Diego and the OC (even Montage in Laguna)!

My experience at the spa pool was paradise.  The pool is heated, service is great (thanks again, Jean-Pier !)...but the best part ---  underwater music...my bald head breaking the surface of the water, and upon first breath, smelling the beautiful star jasmine in bloom :)   It surrounds the spa pool and blooms only a short time (so go this time of year)!!!!!

Juvay, the spa attendant, really made the visit personal.  We talked about the industry and other topics.....basically, he stepped out of the classic 5-star "automaton" role, and made a connection with this guest.  After an amazing massage, I had strawberries & chocolate waiting for me....thanks again, Juvay!

Had breakfast a few times here...good service, but the food was pretty average...nothing to write home about.

I REALLY REALLY wanted to give 5-stars (Forbes did ! ) but our TV had problems (a tech came to fix it though), and the next morning the IPod dock would not work....my lady friend didn't dig those 2 problems...oh well.

Overall, this place is visually stunning, a hidden gem, and a MUST , even if it's for a short get away !   Thanks.....and I'll be back !

Grand is an apropos adjective for this secluded jewel north of La Jolla, but still a short drive from downtown San Diego.

Usually I'm put off by new hotels that try to recreate old-world charm through architecture as the effort comes off contrived. Not so with the Grand. Although the grounds mix design elements from all over Europe (most notably Italy and Spain) the result is a better mashup than anything you'll hear at a club.

The rooms are large and stately with integrated modern technology. The adult pool (to which our room had direct access) has speakers pumping music under the water and servers providing delicious drinks and tasty treats above it. The rest of the sprawling grounds are equally gorgeous and extremely well taken care of. The only blemish on the hotel's record in this regard are the hiking trails - there are almost no signs and it's very easy to get lost with no quick and clear way back to civilization. If you'd rather hit the beach than the trails the hotel will be happy to take you there with chairs, umbrellas and towels in tow. Keep in mind, though, that you're just going to a local beach and not some secluded private oasis.

Unfortunately, food was more of a mixed bag. The Amaya restaurant that's part of the hotel's main building serves excellent and unpretentious Italian fusion food in a beautiful setting both day and night. The fine dining "experience" at Addison was disappointing, however. The "carte blanche" menu where the chef serves what he wants felt over-thought yet was unremarkable in taste and texture. The waiters were entirely too stuffy and pompous, especially when compared with staff at true five star establishments who play off the vibe put off by their patrons. Fortunately it is all too easy to avoid Addison and as the food at Amaya is more than sufficient to keep any gourmand happy when you don't feel like leaving the Grand grounds.

The service is excellent, and the rooms are very nice. Perhaps a slight smell of mold in my room, but not bothersome. This hotel has the best service that we have encountered.

The negatives are personal. We would love to be able to swim or at least use the outdoor hot tub after 9pm. Mostly, we just do not like Del Mar as a city. I found it boring, and I would not be interested in returning. It is a pretty town, but very small, and not much to do. The restaurants are all pretty lame. I tried the "popular" sushi, asian fusion, and sea food, and all were disappointing compared to LA or SF.

But the hotel, yes, it is excellent, but not near the action, at least for adventures we're interested.

This place was gorgeous beyond belief. You know how even at the nicest hotels there is always something cheesy to ruin the lifestyles of the rich and famous fantasy? (like how the Bellagio still has crt televisions...ugh) Well at the Grand, everything looks beautiful and luxurious, down to the very last detail.

The bathroom was stunning with marble counter tops and accents, a deep tub that is big enough for two people, a huge steam shower and their signature shampoos and conditioners that smelled like sugar and citrus. The bed was like sleeping on a cloud and the view from our window was spectacular.

The service at the hotel is awesome.  Everyone was friendly and accommodating.  We ate dinner at Amaya in a private dining room which overlooked the terrace.  The food and atmosphere were impeccable. I saw another private dining room set up in the wine cellar; that would have been amazing to see up close.

If a thousand dollars magically falls from the sky one day, I will definitely return to the Grand Del Mar for a weekend of opulence and luxury...

I just got back from this hotel last week.  I went there with my husband to celebrate our 12 year anniversary and for some much needed R&R.  When we got there we were greeted by everyone from the valet to the lobby desk.  Everyone was so gracious and welcoming from the moment our vacation started. The rooms were spacious and their turn down service was something we looked forward to - the chocolate covered oreo cookies!!!!!
Their food was pretty good, especially Addison.  We went with our American Express Platinum card and they were able to upgrade our room to right by the adult relaxation pool.  We would be able to walk out to our small private terreace surrounded by greens with small private gate, and we would be able to walk right to the pool - WOW!!!!  The service was even great by the pool - which most of the time isn't at other hotels I have been to.
I used to love going to Bacara in Santa Barbara for our weekend vacations; however, after staying here, I can't imagine wanting to go anywhere else - beautiful grounds, good food, amazing service,

Has to be one of the best hotels I have stayed at in California.  Being a travel writer I have high expectations and they surpassed all of them.

Day 1: The Grand Del Mar

A mandatory first start after checking in, is to head straight to the spa.  With an array of services, 11 treatment rooms and 21,000 square feet how could I decide?  Mental Note: This is the only acceptable form of stress on a vacation.  I went with the spa's signature Renaissance treatment, a 90-minute body ritual that will blow your mind.   My treatment began with mineral-rich mud and aromatic oils and ended in a relaxing warm body wrap on a free-floating bed. Throw in a rosemary-infused Swiss shower followed by a soothing stretching massage and I was in heaven.

Yes this is how vacation should start, followed by a drink at the Old Hollywood-style swimming pool, some horseplay, golfing and then off to an incredible dinner at the resorts restaurant Addison.  Life is rough.

Sitting in the cart while slinging back margaritas counts as playing golf right? Ok maybe not to some.  The golf course at the Grand is so amazingly beautiful I had to check it out.  Hoping for a quick lesson from Phil Mickelson a frequent visitor and some decent pictures of myself looking like a pro, I set up our tee time.  "All I need are some lessons," I told myself.  Cute outfit, check, pink golf balls, check and a round of drinks from the beverage cart check, check!

The Grand Golf Course is a challenging Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole par-72 course fit for all levels of play. Opened in 1999, the Grand Golf Club also provides avid golfers with a 2,000-sq.-ft. putting green and a 5,000-sq.-ft. practice tee.  I should've started there!

It looked so easy. The ball just sits there. Any moron could figure it out. But every instinct I had was wrong. You're supposed to hit the ball down to make it go up. What? I want to hit it up to make it go up. When I try to hit down, it's like I'm splitting a log with an axe.  The whole thing didn't make a lot of sense; luckily there was no one else but our caddy to witness my horrible attempt.  I pledged then and there I would get better. At the next few holes I did gain some distance but it wasn't much to write home about.  I guess I will just have to try my luck in Palm Springs.

Next stop the resorts onsite Equestrian Center, of course I finagled my way into the center and convinced one of the workers to let me feed the horses.  The 20,000-square-foot facility offers kids' programs, lessons and trail rides for all ages. We fed the horses now it was our turn to be fed.  We headed off to Addison.

Where old money mixes with new money and the Old World gives way, albeit reluctantly, to a bit of modernity the Addison is a must. The only 5 Star/5 Diamond Restaurant in Southern California.  One of those things you should add to the bucket list, yes it's that good.  Prepare yourself mentally for an extreme dining experience.  This restaurant is no joke with multiple courses and white glove service.  Wine aficionados will face a challenge here with 3800 wines to choose from, selecting a wine could take hours, I suggest adding the wine tasting option and leaving the decision making up to someone else. I kicked off the four-course tasting menu with Black Mission Figs enhanced with whipped Chevre and caramelized endive, then round 2 the Superfino Risotto with preserved lemon and San Daniele prosciutto and finally the Kobe Beef Short Ribs.  Feel free to Google these words, I did while the server wasn't looking.  For dessert, caramelized banana bread was to die for, if you can still find room.

One more stop before we leave, and what better way to start the day then a leisurely 4 1/2-mile hike through one of San Diego's most desired trails.  Even if you're not into crystal balls and vision quests, it's hard to deny the rejuvenating aura of the majestic Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.  A 4,100-acre spread located 12 miles north of downtown, guests of the resort, as well as the public, can enjoy the parks 37 miles of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails.

Without a doubt. 5 solid stars.

The drive to the resort began with rolling hills on a lovely spring day. It was like a getaway to wine country. What a treat! Once you get to the front, you'll find a long road and a couple of areas to park, including valet.

The parking spots for regular folks are just behind the valet, it was quite easy to get to the front door with my bags.

The door is immediately opened upon arrival--even before making eye contact with the doorman.

The Grand Del Mar has an inviting lobby to the right with extremely friendly service. The receptionist who initially greeted us was beyond anything I'd expect. Excellent. Check in was quick and painless. She offered us hot apple cider and cookies which we gladly accepted. We were even led to our room, had our things carried, and given a short tour of the resort. We tried to give her a tip, but she would not take it.

Once you get to the door, you'll notice a doorbell to each room. Your own private oasis awaits.

Electronic buttons (located by the door) are used in place of a "Do Not Disturb" door hanger.

A long walkway meets a beautiful bathroom.

The first sight are a hers/his sink and mirror. Above there is a television in between the two areas. A perfect sized tub, a large see-thru shower, gorgeous marbled counters, a separate toilet area, which by the way, is equipped with its own phone. Luckily, this wasn't needed. Even the toilet paper is sealed with a golden sticker. Detail is everything at The Grand Del Mar and I appreciated every ounce of it.

A nice-sized mirror that's tilt to the most flattering angle greets you when you find the closet area. The closet has an iron, safe, and plenty of hangers. You'll even find a long, comfortable robe and fluffy slippers. I wanted to bring the robe home, but I was satisfied with the free slippers.

There is a large window above the tub that looks out to the grand room, balcony with a killer view of one of the many gardens and hiking trails that surround the resort. The aesthetics of The Grand Del Mar are truly remarkable. Inside the room, lobby, perfectly manicured gardens, and beautiful fountains.

This particular room had an overly comfortable (I did not want to get up) king-sized bed and a long foot stool at the end. A TV with a gold like frame is in front of the bed. A seating area shaped like an L looks outside. We spent a great amount of time outside on the balcony. Again, comfortable chairs and a large table are there for you to relax. The view was peaceful and enjoyable. One of the courtyards is in front, groomed perfectly, and to the left, a large hillside awaits any curious resort only hikers.

As soon as we relaxed, we decided to pop a bottle of bubbles. Called in for glasses and ice; both were brought to the room promptly. Superb service.

After a few drinks, we somehow managed to roam around the resort. The concierge was very friendly and able to give us information on the 2 (I believe) restaurants (French and American), lounge, pool hours, pool hours, tennis court rackets, and trail maps.

There are several pools and jacuzzi(s) to choose from here. The first time I got into the jacuzzi it was scalding. I later told the concierge and she had somebody take care of it.

We opted for one of the bigger pools and made a few laps, laughed, looked at the stars...

Next: Dinner at the Amaya restaurant, located at the resort. Outstanding. Pasta dishes were prepared to look and taste authentic, mixed drinks were made with a generous amount of alcohol, and service was once again a perfect 10.

My boyfriend and I had a fabulous time throughout our stay.

We went to bed. Slept beyond comfortably, courtesy of the plush pillows and cozy, over-sized comforter.

We woke up bright-eyed and refreshed. Ordered some coffee and slipped outside to get the newspaper that was at the door.

I managed to take a lovely hike around the resort, played tennis, took a dip in the jacuzzi, went for a swim, and lied out under the sun before leaving.

I was completely content with the amount of amenities I took advantage of while I was here. Not to mention a delicious dinner the previous night. The Grand Del Mar deserves endless stars. It was a spectacular, remarkable, and exceptional experience.

Maybe next time I'll manage to step outside the resort.

If you are in need of a place to celebrate or just want to experience hospitality and pampering at its finest - head to The Grand Del Mar.

We spent 3 nights and it felt like we had been on vacation for a week we left so tickled and relaxed.

It was our 10 year anniversary last weekend and I'd heard about Addison on various food blogs I follow.  Splurging for dinner became splurging for a "stay-cation" as this hotel as it is only 20 miles from our home in Vista.  We were treated so well we may come back much sooner than our 20 year anniversary!

From the moment you enter the secured driveway to the moment you arrive and are whisked in to the front desk you will be amazed.  Everything is so well done it is a delight.  No snooty five star attitude like you are lucky they let you in - exactly the opposite - like long lost friends who have found you again and want to celebrate along with you!

We ate at every restaurant, enjoyed golf, the spa, live music in the lobby each night with gelato from the coffee shop, a nature hike, the beautiful pools and more.

Addison is the best I've ever enjoyed - they made it very special for for our anniversary (go for the 10 course tasting menu!).

Golf was amazing - Shawn the director there runs a great organization.  Cole, our caddy, was delightful and very kind to me as a beginner golfer!  My husband enjoyed a lesson with Derek Uyeda, their pro golf instructor, that he says is the best he's ever had.

Mona, our concierge, went out of her way to help us make reservations and appointments in advance so that when we arrived it was all done and we relaxed and enjoyed every moment.

And, since we get to enjoy San Diego every day - there was no reason to leave to go "conquer the city" - we were able to completely stay on site and really let go and be warmly taken care of.

To sum it all up - for the price you get much more than a great value.   This is a resort experience like nothing else we've enjoyed in Southern California.  We look forward to visiting again many times in the years to come - whether for a great meal or hopefully to stay again in that amazing room!

Easy drive on the 56 to this secluded resort wedged in a gorgeous valley stamped with an unbelieveable golf course.

There isn't much near, but who needs to leave if you are looking for relaxation?  You can book a towncar (mercedes, escalade, etc.) for a ride anywhere within 14 miles...  This helps when you plan to drink ;)

Our room was next to the "adult pool", which was serene and free of cell phone chatter and screaming kids.  Frozen berries, tasty smoothie samples are delivered to your lounge chair for refreshment.  you can order  food as well and eat on a breakfast tray...the pool is kept at a nice temperature with a heated jacuzzi surrounded by comfy seating close by!!!

Venture to the other pool with a full bar and grille with a little more variety of people and watch people tee off from the third hole.  there is also a fire pit nearby that is hardly used...  Play some tennis or croquet if you want...

I didn't get a chance to play golf, but I don't think I am at the skill level appropriate to hit these links...

Front desk, bell service, room service, pool side service and concierge service is all unbeatable.  Been to a lot of places residing at a lot of hotels and the employee selection is the finest around...

I stayed at the Grand Del Mar over the Thanksgiving weekend. It was my first time here. I have friends who stay here on a regular basis so I've heard all about the resort from them. It is their favorite place to go in Southern California.

I was definitely impressed with "almost" everything...As many others have already stated, the resort is impeccable inside/out. Hard to believe a place like this exists where it does. I originally planned on upgrading to a suite when I arrived, but after seeing the regular room, there really wasn't a need. The rooms are quite large with amazing bathrooms. The room I had was on the ground floor with a patio facing the outside grounds. I loved sitting outside in the morning drinking my coffee. It was very peaceful.

    Pools-very nice
Fitness center-well equipped with modern equipment
    Spa-top notch
Tennis Courts-ok, they definitely need more courts
Basketball Courts-they don't have any and really should. The butler said they get asked this all the time.
Hiking-good, not great, but it works
Horse Back Riding-looks they might be building stables to have horses on site. That would be awesome.
Lobby Bar/Lounge-we ate here one night for dinner. We loved the atmosphere. Cozy, intimate, live music, great drinks and wonderful appetizer menu.

Amaya Restaurant-We reserved a table for Thanksgiving Dinner. Based on the cost I expected this to be the best Thanksgiving meal I've ever had. Unfortunately, it was the worst. I was very disappointed with the meal and service. I have since filled out a survey, which was emailed to me by the hotel after my stay, and I let them know my complaints/issues. I hope they will properly address them..

Room-one of the phones in the room didn't work and the drain in the tub made a very loud obnoxious noise when draining. These were not big enough issues for me to complain about while staying there, but I do feel the amount of money which is spent to stay here, these types of things shouldn't be a problem. I can get over this easily, unlike the meal at Amaya!

Wow, this place is comparable to The Ritz in Paris: everything is first class all the way. Anything you want, the staff is there to please. The rooms are gorgeous and the facility is impeccable. It's expensive though, but this is truly a top-of-the-line experience. If you can manage it, book a Palazzo Suite, with its own dining room (for 8) and a huge double balcony.

I was here yesterday for a wedding.  The grounds are gorgeous and so is the hotel itself.  The staff was very nice and friendly, the service was great and the food...OMG.  Best wedding food I've had in a long time.  The beef was so tender and beautifully cooked.

    A really nice/romantic place for a wedding.

Unbelievably excellent in every way!!  This hotel is as good as your going to find.  This year was our third time staying and we will go back every year.  Go for just a few nights and you'll walk away feeling very relaxed.  They treat you like royalty from room service with a special treat upon check in, chocolates at turn down service, little comped treats by the pool like frozen grapes, cool towels, sunglass cleaning.  GO NOW!!

From check in, room service, turn down, equestrian staff, pool with cabana service-- the staff here achieved total satisfaction. The room service isn't a resignation to late night eating in the room, it was brilliantly executed. Also, the in room espresso is fabulous. Little things like making your menu reasonable and well executed made it irresistible and so easy to plan meals. Your beds were great, too. It made being on the road comfortable and pleasant! Not just for business but for family! We travel for business with our family. We felt welcome, not tolerated and loved all the options for our facets of life.  I won't consider anywhere else in SD for a long while.
Great location for San Diego. Great destination otherwise. Utilize the stables, they are top notch as are the trainers.
The MR would like to add one note: turn down the music in the library. We often use library space or comfortable lounge space like that for early work on projects in other time zones.

We've stayed a few times here to play golf and always look forward to coming back. It is a very elegant resort with wonderful service. The staff is always ready to help and usually does so with a smile. We've stayed in both the Prado and Palazzo suites and loved the decor in both! Very elegantly appointed and classically designed. As for golf, I'm not a serious golfer and enjoy it most at a casual pace with no bets on the line so I pay attention to the grounds more than the holes. Del Mar offers a beautiful course. We are always impressed with our stays so we try to return as often as we can.

This is by far the finest hotel in San Diego, if not So Cal all together.

Starting with its entrance into the majestic meadows of del mar, opens this oasis of a resort.

Staff is very kind and courteous and will go well out of their way to accommodate you.

The accoutrements throughout the facilities are top notch and only the best quality.

Love the pool area especially when they have someone bbq'ing!

    Rooms are spectacular.

Clients of mine love meeting here for a cocktail in the lobby or the library area..

This list could go on and on but if you have the opportunity to visit this hotel or just come for a staycation, you will be amazed.

This review reflects me and my fiance's stay before Valentines day, particularly 2/11 - 2/13.

I had been researching various locations in San Diego for a wedding proposal that I had planned. This was a daunting task given the wonderful locations everywhere, but I finally settled upon The Grand Del Mar Hotel.

Upon entering the property of the Grand Del Mar, my fiance and I could not stop gasping at the beauty surrounding this hidden gem of a resort. The drive leading to the actual hotel was beautiful and lush being on a golf course. The greenery was well kept and maintained.

Arriving at the hotel entrance we almost hyperventilated at the magnificence of the hotel. The lobby was gorgeously decorated with a huge centerpiece of flowers (which we were informed was changed weekly) and hand painted (allegedly) wall decorations. The receptionist greeted us warmly and offered cool/cold hand towels infused with cucumber to "revitalize" our senses upon check-in. The receptionist then gave us a well informed and friendly tour of the lobby which had was ordained with leather couches galore, and just the smell of glamour.

The bellhop was more than gracious in introducing us to our room on the first floor which opened to a small private patio that looked out into a well groomed garden with many orange trees. The room was spacious and incredibly amazing. It came with a beautiful and quite comfortable couch, two wooden desks, and a 42" LCD sitting atop a well-polished drawer. The bed was a glorious queen sized gift from the heavens. Being used to back-pain from our own bed, it was a very welcomed experience to wake up without pain. Our favorite was a tub that was about three/four feet high that was able to fit the both of us comfortably.

More about the outside, our room lead into a garden, which opens to a trail around the hotel. On one side you have the amazing architecture of the hotel, on the other lush greens of the golf course or the hotel's well kept garden view. Our stay there never, ever, ever disappointed. The staff were incredible, the place was incredible, the attention to detail and service impeccable, and the overall ambience was sheer phenomenal.

Definitely will stay here again. And again.

We got married here in 2010 and it was PERFECT! The setting is magical, the staff is exceptional, the food was delicious, and the rooms were exquisite ! I cannot say a single negative thing- the place has ruined all other hotels for me!!

In top of all that, we went back for our first anniversary and were treated to Champagne, treats, and a handwritten card in our room, and a free desert with dinner- they are so lovely!

I should also say that I was intimidated when I first saw the website (it looked so much nicer than anything else I've seen), but once you set foot inside, they immediately make you feel welcome and comfortable.  They really do take customer service to a whole other level!  I can't wait to go back :)

Lucky me...I discovered this amazing experience by attending a luxury conference.   Direct from the Pacific Northwest Coast to sunny San Diego is already a shock to the system...loved the race up the coast highway to this hotel...time to start decompressing en route.   Everything was perfect in my stay...service, quality, room, you name it, it was great.   I hated to leave, and if I could, would return in a tick.  Thank you to all who made my stay a true premier one.   Highly recommend.

Hotel was well worth the considerable expense. Rooms were spacious and nicely appointed, grounds are immaculate and the staff is wonderful! I spent so much time is the pools and massive tub in my room, I was beginning to look like a prune! Solution? Step out of the pool and have the wonderful staff bring me a cocktail to sip while I worked on my tan.

Everything is as it should be and it's a great place to spend a weekend!

give it up to 2 el-lay show producers to pick the grand del mar as their ga-ga-gorgeous setting for a wedding reception.

details only a girl would notice:
    1. vintage movie poster of the couple with friends in the background
    2. employee who would re-arrange the place cards like she was one of the guests.

details anyone who wasn't cray-cray would notice:  party appies pre-dinner
    1. the omg tender, tender, tender and juicy lamb - best i ever tasted.  worth every stain on my gown it was that good.
    2. yummy coconut shrimp

meh: tartare and meh on the mini sliders from crab cake to burger.  overcooked and dry.

    otherwise - FAB-O!!!

the dinner was so good - my mother wished i had or would have a wedding reception like this one.  ah well, my next life.  the drive thru elvis is more realistic for me.

the pasta was al dente and the filet was perfectly cooked.

service was top notch as was the romantic setting.  maybe part of the hat tip goes to the wedding planner who did 3 center pieces with crystals for the "regular" tables.  i "bedazzled" the table with the loosely tossed crystals.  there was so much bling that you'd think it was going out of style.

with a great open patio for mingling and a big reception area with stage, the grand in del mar is for weddings little girls dream of.  sigh.  i wonder how many fights this romantic wedding started between lovebirds?  a toast to the couple - well deserved my friends, well deserved.

the bar area for the afterparty was cigar worthy.  i never made it to the after-afterparty into the honeymoon suites.  even the preggo lady outdanced me.  but i'm sure if it was anything like the ceremony or the reception...it was fan-tabulous.

Wow! Our family of 4 had an AMAZING time at the hotel. Everywhere we looked there was beauty!  From the moment we stepped out of the car we were treated like royalty. The babysitters in the kids club are two fun girls that my daughters loved! The horse back riding was great the trainers at the stables were awesome. The hiking was so peaceful and everything I needed for a leisure hike. The rooms were big with a huge patio and super cozy and nice! Overall it is our favorite place to stay over the del, surf and sand, or la costa or any Southern California resort. We are big staycationers and we are going to make this place our tradition! Loved it!

There are not many places in San Diego that can claim to be as nice as the Gand Del Mar.  The views and grounds are pristine.  The staff is amazing and wow the food!  Yum.  The price is up there but if you are looking for a pampering this is the place to go. And if you are looking to stay the night the resort is amazing. They will definitively make you feel like royalty.

My husband and I recently spent 10 days at this hotel with our 7 year old daughter. Up to now vacation trips with our daughter have all been beach trips staying in vacation homes but we decided this was the year to opt for a little luxury. The Grand Del Mar exceeded all my expectations. When we arrived, our room was not ready but the reception staff quickly reassigned us and we were able to take advantage of a leisurely afternoon at the pool. The rooms are spacious and very well appointed. Bathrooms are somewhat dated but nevertheless luxurious and everything was spotlessly clean. The beds are wonderful, I wish I could take one home with me, so comfortable are they, and the bed linens are fabulous. The room rate includes water, which might seem like a small thing but saved us quite a lot of money during our stay as we were able to take plenty of supplies with us wherever we went. The Nespresso machine was very nice to have, I enjoyed a few cups each morning while reading my complimentary newspaper out on the patio with a wonderful view of the gardens. The family pool area consists of two pools, one 3'6" and the larger pool ranging in depth from 3'6" to 8' in depth. The pool area is very picturesque with views of the surrounding hills and golf course. Loungers are luxurious and pool staff appear instantaneously with towels and water and remain continuously attentive to your needs. The pool area does get crowded at times and late comers may find it hard to get loungers with a good view of the pool - which is essential when watching young children play. The pool menu offers a variety of salads, sandwiches and more as well as the resort kids menu which was clearly designed by someone who knows exactly what kids will and will not eat - our especially picky eater of a daughter loved the mac & cheese, cheese pizza, spaghetti with tomato sauce and the chicken tenders with fries. The adult menu food is pretty good and not unreasonably priced given the exceptional service and setting. The hotel is not on the coast but they do provide a shuttle service to Del Mar or if you drive there, which we did, they will load up your vehicle with beach towels, beach toys and water and even chairs if you want them. It is just a few easy miles of driving to the beach and Del Mar is a great beach. The hotel is also conveniently placed for trips to the San Diego Zoo (not worth the expensive entrance fees in my opinion) LEGOLAND and SeaWorld (which is definitely worth the cost). On our last two mornings we put our daughter in the Explorers Club and she loved it - the staff are great and the club facilities are excellent, lots of games, activities and more in a large high tech dedicated space. This is a luxury hotel but is also very kid friendly with nice little touches like the welcome cookie in our room, a travel buddy for our daughter and the treasure chest on arrival. Breakfast in the Amaya restaurant is very good, if somewhat expensive. On Friday and Saturday nights you can put your kids in the explorers club for popcorn and a movie - something we did not avail of but if we visit again will definitely do so we can try the 2 Michelin star restaurant Addison. But what makes this hotel truly memorable is the amazing service - at the pool service is very attentive, housekeeping staff are so friendly and professional and the concierge staff are excellent. Trip to SeaWorld? No problem, they will book your tickets, print them out, provide you with detailed driving instructions, a map and a detailed guide plus information on shows and times. My only problem now is figuring out how to top this experience with our next vacation - I think it might prove tricky if not impossible to do. The verdict from our very picky 7 year old? "This was the best vacation ever."

AMAZING! The standard to which we now compare ALL other resorts.  I cannot say enough good things about this place.  I have stayed many other "luxury" resorts in California that come with a similar price tag, but do not even come CLOSE to the level of precision and attention to detail provided by The Grand Del Mar.  The staff simply could not be any more perfect, and I struggle to find anything that could be improved apron.  Actually, it would be nice if the spa had a common lounge area that was unisex in addition to the separate male and female sides, so couples enjoying spa treatments could relax and converse with each other in a common area.  That's it though, everything else was perfect!

This hotel is beautiful! Everything about it is so luxurious and high class.  I love coming to the bar and lounge area on Thursday nights to watch the Benedetti Trio perform.  It is very relaxing and they are truly outstanding performers.  The cocktail servers bring by some really good green olives and candied nuts when you order drinks, too.  Definately a great place to take out-of-towners because it is a great hotel.

My wife and I recently attended the Mother's Day Brunch in the Capella at the Grand Del Mar.  This was our first experience at this resort and it left us with very mixed feelings. The resort itself and the surrounding grounds are beautiful.  Unfortunately, we found the brunch to be very disappointing.  Admittedly, we had lofty expectations--but shouldn't we when paying TOP dollar at a five star resort?

To begin, we were seated on the patio in a high traffic area near the buffet.  Not a big deal, but a little inconvenient with an 18 month old.  Our reservation was made well in advance with a requested high chair, yet I had to stand by the table holding my son for 5-10 minutes while we waited for one.  In the meantime, my wife was served a cold cup of coffee.  Not the start I had hoped for, but I thought,  "as long as the food is good...."

My first stop at the buffet was the waffle station for my kid.  Yes, he liked the waffles, but there was not much separating them from 'Eggos'.  The berries were of the frozen (not fresh) variety, and the mixed fruit looked like it had been sitting for some time.

I tried the omelette station and it was ok--essentially identical to the ones I frequent at the Embassy Suites while on business travel.  So far nothing too bad, but nothing 'Five Star' either.  BTW, no champagne was included with this high end brunch--another surprise based on our experiences at far less expensive holiday brunches.

Next, I gave the eggs benedict a try and it was awful. Really.  It was a semi-hard boiled egg with a flimsy piece of ham on top of a muffin that seemed like it came right out of a bag from Costco (not even toasted).  I'm quite certain that the hollandaise sauce was from a package rather than the real deal.

The food got worse from there, including some 'prime rib' that I couldn't eat and a warm, fishy raw oyster. The idea of fresh oysters was certainly a nice touch, but at this price I would suggest doing it right (shucked to order) or not at all rather than piling up a bunch of them to get warm and distasteful.

At that point I started to feel pretty badly about what was turning out to be a big disappointment on a very special day.   I could not help but share my thoughts with the manager on duty (Charles, I think).  Charles handled the situation perfectly. He wanted to know exactly what we didn't like so he could look into it, and he offered to pick up the tab for our entire brunch.  I explained that we had eaten some of the food and we were willing to pay for it, yet he insisted that if we were not happy we should not pay a dime.  He even suggested that we continue eating if we wished (which we did not).  Charles stood by their commitment to quality and asked that we give The Grand another chance in the future, which I believe we will (though not for brunch!).

In the end, we left our table and made other arrangements to celebrate Mother's Day.  Despite a culinary disappointment, we still talk about how genuinely concerned Charles was about our experience at The Grand Del Mar, and because of that, we have no reservations about trying out some of the other things the resort has to offer.

**If I could separate my rating, I would give two stars for the food and five stars for the management's professionalism and commitment to customer satisfaction.**

The management and staff at this resort are amazing  when it comes to satisfying their guests. They do their best to accommodate and please each and every guest. We went back to Amya, they heard my complaint about not having many "Green choices" and they tried to fix it, which I appreciate a lot.
Their new manager "Giorgio" is incredibly courteous, he checks on each table frequently and makes sure the guests are happy with their experiences. The Servers where friendly and knowledgeable. Over all a great experience.

    Now the food:

    Salad :
I ordered a salad (don't remember the name) that had both fruits and vegetables, it was a great mix, fresh and well decorated, except for the dressing which was a little too acid for my taste.

    Main Course:

The veal strip steak : The veal was cooked to perfection! the ragout was over spiced with black pepper but lacking taste. It came with a great cauliflower purée on the bottom and an ok red sauce. In my opinion the mix of both meats was too heavy on one dish, maybe some sautéed mini vegetables  would have been a much better balance to the veal. I honestly would expect an explosion of taste if I pay $39 for a dish, unfortunately it didn't happen.
My husband had the Roasted Duck, he thought it was well cooked, but also lacking taste.
Also, in the main courses I would have preferred to see more 100% vegetarian choices.

    Desert :
Our deserts and teas were awesome, we enjoyed them a lot, sitting in the patio with such an amazing view and relaxing atmosphere.
Over all we had an outstanding experience.

My husband and I are foodies, we LIVE for great food. The grand has absolutely gorgeous Mediterranean architecture that reminds us of where we grow up. We just wish their food will follow the same level of refinement, amazing taste and verity that the Mediterranean cuisine is universally known and recognized for.

If I was the chef, I would bring the taste of southern france, Italy and spain with an exotic  twist of north africa to complement the spirit of this place.

Again, THANK YOU to all the team of the resort and Amaya for the amazing effort to make each of us feel special.

Honestly one of the best hotels we have stayed in, atleast in the US.  Right when we arrived for check-in, you can feel the difference in 5 star hospitality.  We were offered refreshments and kids have a treasure chest to pick from.

We got a room on the 1st floor.  The wallpaper, hardwood finish furniture, crown moldings, marble countertops, flat screen tv enclosed in a frame, tv in the bathroom, and sliding french door leading out to the fresh landscaped grounds, all of it is just breathtaking.

Even the pool facility staff is very accommodating.  They set up the chairs for us with chair cover and towels.  Later they brought water and you have the option for other service.

The property has a Mediterranean designed landscape and feel.  Even the background music playing and the Amaya restaurant in the hotel is Mediterranean.

    Hospitality - 5
    Room - 5
    Pool - 5
    Landscape - 5

Pros: rooms are very comfortable, beautiful property, convenient location, impeccable service

Cons: Very expensive (what can you expect)

Resort Amenities: tennis courts, golf course, live music at night in the lounge, free wi-fi, iPod dock

This resort is very relaxing.  Definitely a great place to unwind and treat yourself after working hard at work.  I would consider staying here again, but hopefully there are specials.

No seriously, it's more of OMFG WOW.

So the wife and I wanted to get away for the weekend, since we had missed an opportunity the prior weekend. I was researching stylish places from Santa Barbara to San Diego. She had told me she preferred to go to SD instead and to, "surprise her."

And that I did. Along with myself.

I initially found this location through Trip Advisor and read their reviews. After reviewing the main website and other Yelp reviews, I decided to give them a call. When booking, I asked for the spa treatment special. Every person I spoke with at GDM was extremely helpful and cordial. They asked me for the reason of my stay to which I simply remarked, "just because. =)" No, I did not say the words, "happy face," over the phone. Needless to say, they helped planned our short weekend with many, many events.

Upon arriving, the front gate greeted us very warmly and by name. The valet offered to take our "travel trash" out and parked our cars, and helped us with our things. We were handed warm, moist towels at the front desk. Then we were escorted to our rooms, greeted kindly by other hotel patrons and staff alike.

The room was spectacular and inviting. Our favorite teas and newspapers were ready, along with an iTouch dock to place our ipod in. They are very attentive to even the smallest of needs! We loved the room and the location.

They assisted us in getting to the nearby theater and we had spectacular evening. The morning after, I surprised her with the spa treatment which she happily obliged while I headed to the gym. While the gym is not 'grand' by any means, it's very good enough for me to have done my workout.

Through and through the grounds, the people, and the environment is certainly magical and surreal enough to return. Which we did, and that I will save as a followup.

If you can do it, stay here, it's worth it.

When someone says that they are having an event at the Grand Del Mar, you're in for a treat... unless they're not inviting you.  Then you just lose.

We were fortunate to have our company holiday party here.  Open bar for 1 hr, dinner banquet, followed by dancing and casino night!  So let's do this in 3 stages.

Cocktail Hour.  Two stations to serve drinks in a small area but it wasn't too too crowded.  The drinks were made well at one station and not so well on the other.  I had 3 pineapple vodka's.  I heard from a coworker that the top shelf drinks were $14 per.  Very steep if you ask me but I guess if your'e in a nice area, that's all it is.

Dinner:  Great food.  What else can I say?  They had a wonderful shrimp cocktail salad followed by great seabass/lobster ravioli.  Lastly, they had a 3 piece tasting of chocolate cake, rasberry cheesecake, and lemon tart.  The chocolate cake was The fish was cooked near perfectly and the desserts were not too sweet and not too tart.  During the dinner the servers were very attentive minus forgetting to give me my coffee.  It would have been a perfect dinner had my other coworker not pranked me with salt in the water and my lady being a little under the weather.

Party time: The venue was great.  The ballroom was very snazzy with a beautiful chandelier.  The room was big enough to house the dining tables, a band (with great acoustics) and the half casino.  Honestly, if I were able to, I'd have my wedding here.

TL:DR. This place is snazzy.  Wish I could afford it.

What a gorgeous hotel! This place is opulent on a sprawling property with gorgeous views. Staff was friendly and efficient. Our room was absolutely gorgeous. They set us up with complimentary wine and nuts and fruits which we nibbled on before settling in. That tub and the shower were divine. There were rose petals all over our room, too, which was a nice touch. Our room opened out into a beautiful courtyard and the sun came streaming in through the windows. Every wing of this hotel was beautiful. And every staff member we met was very helpful. They certainly do know how to treat a guest here. Awesome!

First of all, I have to thank Hubby's company for flying us out here for their National Leadership Conference and Awards Gala (you know who you are).

We stayed at The Villas. An ultralux, 4500 square foot (I think) Mediterranean style villa. I'm not sure how many different versions they have but ours had 3 bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths with an elevator, a 2 car garage and golf cart garage with plush golf cart. There was a full kitchen, media room with a 60" TV and Bose Theater surround sound system, entertaining area with wet bar/TV, game table, baby grand piano, living space area with fireplace and another TV; The indoor living area opened to the outdoor living area which had a grill island, a fire pit, and a Jacuzzi. It was separated by a great big glass sliding door that you could open or close just by pushing a button. Whew!

We shared the house with two of his peers and lucky for us we picked the room that had a balcony, which happened to be the master bedroom.

The master bedroom has a king size bed, a fireplace and a big screen TV with a Bose surround sound system. His annnd hers full bathrooms with flat screen TV's, an office with 20" HP and WiFi Internet access, exercise room, and a balcony with fireplace overlooking the swimming pool and golf course. I didn't get to look around his friend's bedrooms that good (just a quick glance), but they were just as nice.

No wonder Tiger Woods likes to stay here...Ahem...

Like I said, Hubby came here for a company party and fortunately they invited their significant others to come celebrate their success too. So, I got to enjoy the great food at the party and a very nice view of The Grand Golf course. Not to mention, getting to stay at The Grand Del Mar and steering clear of the cedar pollen in Austin for a couple of days.

Any who, I asked how much it was to stay at The Villas, just in case I won the lottery. The Villas, however, are not available to the public because it's actually like a "timeshare". According to the front desk, if you want to buy one it works out to about $4500 a week, I think. How did we get such lux accommodations you ask? It's a long story...

So, if you love playing golf, have a chunk of change to spare, and want to stay in a house but get hotel treatment then get a spot at The Villas, you won't be disappointed.

I work for a Fortune 500 company here in San Diego who holds a lot of events / meetings / dinners / outings at the Grand del Mar.

In mid-December 2011, I went w/ a group from work for a holiday luncheon at Club M.  While the waitress was serving the 1st round of drinks, she spilled a whole glass of white wine on my new Marni handbag (I had rec'd it as a Xmas gift from my boyfriend the previous evening). The management was apologetic and offered to send it to the cleaners but since I had another holiday event that evening I told them I would take it to the cleaners myself. They were fine w/ that and agreed to cover any cleaning costs.

I took the bag to Margaret's (the premier cleaner in SD) and spoke to their leather expert.  They cleaned the bag but the damage was irreparable.  I was told that if they dyed the bag (super soft,  dark green lambskin) they would have to re-color the entire bag and it may not cover the stains and definitely would change the texture (not acceptable to me).

GdM refused to compensate me for the bag saying that they couldn't be sure that it was authentic.  The GdM offered me $350 for the bag and $106 for the cleaning costs that I had incurred.  I reluctantly agreed and then the GdM immediately said that they would "have to do more research".  I ended up sending the bag to the Marni headquarters in New York and received a letter of authenticity from the national sales director.  The bag's replacement value was just under $1K.

I filed a small claims case against GdM for $650 for the purse (which I thought was equitable) + $106 for the cleaning costs + shipping to/from NYC.  Our court date was a couple of weeks ago and while the case was being heard, the GdM's representative LIED under oath.  I was awarded only $100 (which didn't even cover the cleaning costs!).

Later that day, my supervisor called Tom Voss (Pres of GdM) because of the way I had been treated by GdM.  Mr. Voss agreed to pay me an extra $106 but was, to paraphrase my boss, not a very nice guy to deal with.

Bottom line, my employer gives ALOT of business to GdM but they don't seem to value that relationship or to operate at a level that you would expect such a high tier property to conduct business at.

Recently stayed here for a work conference that we were hosting at the resort and enjoyed everything that the hotel had to offer.

The food (at various corporate functions, in the dining rooms and from room service) was all very excellent.  Even something as simple as steel cut oatmeal was extremely delicious.

The grounds are very well kept and the staff is very friendly and attentive - everything you would expect from a resort of this caliber.

I wasn't a huge fan of some of the decor in the rooms - some of it was a bit too over-the-top for my needs (like the gold art frame around the big screen TV) but the rooms are a great size, beds are comfy etc.

The spa here is easily the best I've ever been to. Yes, the treatments are expensive, but well worth it. I had the Vichy shower and it was amazing. Just the lounge/waiting area in the spa is probably the nicest I've been in - a very tranquil environment with delicious cookies/muffins/teas and chocolates and these great lounge chairs that they encourage you to just nap in.

If it's in your price range, I'd suggest checking this place out - I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Virtually everyone has had the experience of having exceptionally high expectations dashed. Interestingly, it often happens when we are chasing something that was simply incredible the first time.  Ever heard of not pushing your luck? And, to complicate things, it is the rare person who does not at least a tiny bit inflate (ok, ok, "romanticize") the initial experience, thus often making chasing the dragon a fool's errand.

Thus, I admit to a certain amount of trepidation a couple of weeks ago when heading to The Grand Del Mar.  We were there two years ago and it was a truly unique and amazing experience. It was--by far--the finest hotel/resort we had ever had the pleasure of visiting.  So, imagine our surprise when this experience not only lived up to our expectations but exceeded them. Exactly as you would expect from San Diego's only Forbes Five Star Hotel.

From the various restaurants (including the incredible and rightly award-winning Addison), to the grounds, to the pools, to the impeccably trained staff, this place has figured it out.   I'm pretty sure when I die I'm going to "The Grand," as they call it there.

Would like to offer a B I G thank you to sports radio icon, Jim Rome.  A few years ago he talked about the resort and was obviously very, very impressed. I checked it out and told my wife, "We're going." We went. We went again. We'll go again.  If you know Romey, please give him our thanks.

I can not express how much I am in love with The Grand Del Mar. I work here on occasion with Marion's Childcare Inc. The service and staff are amazing and so accommodating. Yes its very prices but you get your moneys worth. They really go out of their way to make your stay that much more special. Its such a beautiful place and the atmosphere is up beat and lively. My favorite part is definitely the flowers. They're everywhere and so beautiful esp the main piece when you first walk in.
I always have a good time while I'm there even though I'm working. They have a 5 star spa. The Explorers Club for kids ages 5 and up. An Equestrian Center. Multiple pools. Ect. The grounds are amazing. If you're looking for a nice get away or a place to stay while in San Diego my number one recommendation would be the Grand Del Mar.

Spent a 3-night Father's Day weekend at the Grand Hotel Del Mar. It was our first time at the resort, but not the last. From the minute we passed the guard gate, we knew we were in for a first class experience. Four people greeted us with smiles at the hotel entrance. The person who checked us in not only took us to our room but showed us other available rooms in case we liked those better. We chose the first one: large room on second floor with a small patio. The room was superb(as was everything in the hotel). This is really a GRAND hotel. The staff couldn't have been nicer and everyone seemed willing to go out of their way to please us. Loved the large lobby bar with entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. Only disappointment was that there was no entertainment on Sunday night. Pool side service was the best we have had anywhere in the U.S.  The golf course was excellent too, except for the speed of play. Father's Day was pretty busy.

A Five star rating is not enough for the Grand Del Mar. This was the best resort experience we have ever had. Can't wait to return in August

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I went to The Grand Del Mar, but this place is amazing. The hotel itself is the most ornate thing I've seen in California...maybe in the U.S. This place is the fanciest of fancy.

Now, I will say this place isn't the best hotel for the young and single. This meant I spent most of my time using my in room espresso maker or drinking in the library...yeah i said library.

What did this hotel do for me? The food. SWEET JESUS was the food amazing. Even the poolside food was amazing, which I don't think I've ever experienced at a hotel.

Lastly, the have a pool with music UNDER THE WATER. Let me explain in more detail. You're sitting by the pool, its quiet...dead quiet...relaxing, yes? You go for a swim in the olympic size, salt water, heated pool. As soon as your ears go below water...BAM...music. I mean crystal clear...loud music. They were playing 80s. I don't think I've wanted to keep my head under water for so long (not for drowning).

    This place...awesome

My husband and I with our 7-year old son stayed at The Grand Del Mar this weekend. We had a grand time! We loved the place, the staff provided phenomenal service - everyone was professional, polite and happy to be working there. Valet crew, housekeeping, Amaya dining, cafe place and concierge service were excellent - always happy to help. We unfortunately were unable to dine at their world class restaurant, Addison, but next time we will make sure we'll make reservation way in advance.  I'm glad they're only 2 hours away.
Although my son didn't find time to try their kids' club, it is great to know the hotel provides one for future fun and convenience. We had our bikes and his scooter and enjoyed hiking on the Shaw trail overlooking the golf course.
We had an excellent time we can't wait to go back!
    Loved it!

First of all, Thank you David S. Nick, Mihan, Ali, Sam, Adan, and last but not least Mackenzie. What a great team, you folks are number one in my book. But with that being said, I feel bad for one of the valet staff because he was a bit rude, I hope he will feel better soon, and be back in top form. The valet staff is not just folks who park your car, they are the first one who set the mood of the place and a very important part of the team. If one of the link in the chain is weak, the whole thing will fall apart. I'm glad the rest of the team is at 110%, thank you guys! :D

There's a reason for the hefty price tag with the rooms here.  I was fortunate enough to have won a free night stay at The Grand Del Mar by donating to my friend's community service project in the Phillipines.

This hotel is amazing.  It's not really a hotel, but more of a resort.  If you come here for the weekend, you can actually probably never leave the premises since it is so vast and there are a lot of activities here to do.

Right from when you pull up into the valet, the service is impeccable.  We had a nice young man open the door of the lobby for us and guide us to the front desk.  There I noticed they offered wet towels (warm I'm assuming) to freshen up.  We arrived earlier than check in, so our room was not ready.  But the staff happily offered without us asking a key to the pool and provided a map of the resort (and yes you will need the map).

We headed to M Club (I think during the day it's the golf clubhouse and at night it becomes a lounge) and watched some football and had some drinks.  The drinks add up on the price tag and the fish tacos are tasty and of course the service was great.  It's like if the staff has nothing to do, they will find something to do by asking guests if they need anything else.  It's really quite amazing.

The room itself was very nice and quite large.  I love how there was a little window that opens up from the bathroom to the living/bed area.  Plus, there was this little curved couch that I lounged on which I loved.  There was also a small balcony with a small table and two chairs for one to enjoy a cup of coffee while enjoying the view and fresh air (in this case it was a view of the golf course and the equestrian center).

The room comes with a Neospresso machine which I was delighted to try.  Also, sometime while we were out, someone came in and gave us the itinerary of the next day's activity (such as yoga, etc.), as well as additional water bottles and a box of chocolates and sprinkling some rose petals in the bathroom and on the bed.

The one fault I did find with my too short stay at The Grand Del Mar was the fact that the television was not HD!  Such a minor thing and most people would probably want to play golf, go to the pool, or the other endless amount of activities on the resort instead of watching television.  But I just found it sort of odd to not have HD at such an expensive resort.

Bottomline it's luxurious and comes with the luxurious price tag.  Most of the guests here are older and seem sophisticated.  If you're looking for a rager, this place is not it.  Make sure to bring the cash and the class if you're staying here.

If you appreciate the details this place is for you.  From my first call to the reservations operator to the valet when checking out I was always impressed.

    A few things I noted:
reservations operator google searched a restaurant I mentioned during our call and provided distance and directions from the hotel

check in offered warm towels upon arrival

spa staff asked slipper size for my wife during phone scheduling

staff pauses in hall greeting you while you pass

complementary in room espresso machine is really nice and good quality

finish details in standard room are excellent, all marble, kohler finishes

the layout of the property is great as the kids pool could not be further from the adult pool

valet cleaned road trash from car and always offered water upon leaving

we requested a late check out on our last day to do afternoon tea and our check out time was moved 3 hours later without any problem, the tea was outstanding

there is NO RESORT CHARGE and Internet is included, so I did not feel nicked and dimed

there is a nightly complementary shoe shine service, just leave outside your door

There is probable more features this property provided, but can recall now.  The property was really a step up from the average Hyatts and Marriotts and even some Ritz Carltons and Four Seasons I have been to.  We will definitely return.

When you deserve a remarkable weekend away head to The Grand Del Mar and it will definitely not disappoint you in anyway.  I have stayed both in their Brisa Villa when I had friends and family come enjoy the weekend with me as well as enjoyed staying in one of their suites and have never been disappointed in anyway.  Well maybe in one way...Tom Fazio does the course really need that many hazards LOL - my golf games belongs on a miniature golf course not this spectacular course.

I have stayed more than a few weekends here typically either in the Mizner or the Manchester Suite, which are located on the top floor of the resort with spacious terraces overlooking the golf course and the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve.  Both suites have fireplaces and butler pantries so those late night urges to sit in front of a fireplace enjoying a fine glass of cognac or Cristal are made easy, no plastic ice buckets needed.

The spa is magnificent, if you are in need of some pampering then you are not going to be disappointed with any of their treatments, I prefer their 'Touch Therapies' to clean my senses from a stressful work week.

You can be dropped off on Friday after work and be picked up on Sunday evening and never need a car to do anything as everything that you could ever want is located within the resort and if is it not, the staff are more than willing to find it and get it for you with a smile.  That is why The Grand Del Mar was named one of the "World's Best Places to Stay" by Condé Nast Traveler.

We celebrated my 60th Birthday over the 4th of July weekend at the Grand Del Mar and everything was fantastic.  The Hotel and grounds are beautiful and the room accommodations were absolutely perfect.  The golf course was excellent and all of the staff was very friendly, accommodating and greeted us each day as if we were members.  The caddies each day were great, excellent personalities and extremely helpful.  If you are looking for a fantastic place to stay and play golf in the San Diego area I would highly recommend the Grand Del Mar.

Pretty amazing hotel.  When you pay what you pay for a hotel like this, you expect great service but the service here goes above and beyond anything I have experienced at similar hotels.  Every single staff member is nice and friendly and will say hi to you, ask you what you need and take care of whatever you want.  Pretty awesome.  I left a pair of shoes in my car, valet went out to get them, brought them to my room for me, sweet.  You get your shoes shined every night.  The spa was so-so but the men's relaxation room had some great chairs to relax in.  Beautiful area around the hotel and the rooms were very spacious and set up in a matter that made the rooms seem huge.  A great hotel shower too and I think the tub was a solid 4 feet deep.

Great dining options too.  Would love to come here regularly but the price would prohibit that.

This business is the reason I may never give 5 stars to any other reviews ever again.  Anyone who wants to spoil their friends or family on an expensive experience will be wasting their time going anywhere else.

Hangin out poolside drinking Cris Barcas signature cocktails is all I want to do all summer. And with 32,000 bottles of wine in their cellar to choose from. One could never get bored.

What makes the Grand Del Mar so special isn't the hotel by itself, but the entire package that is a 5-star hotel, 5-star spa and 5-star restaurant. When you want to live in the lap of luxury, this place will have any guest feeling like they have the world at their fingertips.

    - Few minutes from beach.
    - 37 miles of hiking, biking or horseback riding.
    - Championship golf course designed by Tom Fazio.
    - Four swimming pools (one with an adjacent sand beach).
    - Two tennis courts.
    - Villas available for longer stays (with helicopter pad).
    - Many stars and athletes can be seen on the property.
    - Award winning restaurants.
    - Award winning spa.
    - Award winning salon.

I can hear you now, $395 for a room? Yea right! This place may not be for those with a slim wallet but you don't have to have money stacked like encyclopedias either. If you play your cards right come for a special occasion, even the cheapest penny pincher can rationalize visiting this mystical getaway. As soon as you drive through the gate and past the golf course towards the resort you can feel your worries lifting away. I wasn't sure why my Civic wasn't valet parked next to the Rolls Royce and Ferrari's but I was able to still enjoy my visit.

The architecture blows you away, the staff take care of you right away (especially if guest issues arise) and I felt like a million bucks just being at the resort even though I am lacking a few zeros in my bank account. It may have been at the far edge of my budget range but I have never regretted spending any money during my visit. There are shops with gifts, desert, snacks and everything else you can think of. Just fantastic! I can keep going on and on but you have to experience it for yourself.

The Grand Del Mar is first and only hotel in San Diego to be awarded Five Stars. not only that but it's the only property in California to earn three 2012 Five-Star awards for Lodging, Spa and Dining (only 57 high-end hotels/resorts in the world). As if that wasn't enough, it's had AAA five diamond award for the third straight year. If that doesn't melt your heart I don't know what will. The $395 doesn't sound so bad when you know you're getting a high-end one of the best in the world (literally) experiences.

I was hired as a home-service nurse for a few premature babies and they were staying here at one of the villas, where it's $5,000 a night. Yes, a night, but the villa is about 4,000 sq. ft, with a gorgeous kitchen, view of the pool, gorgeous Venetian design in the house, and beautiful dining, living room, family room, and 4 bedrooms. Not to mention, the 4 bathrooms all have deep soak in tubs and generous walk in closets.

Though I didn't stay at the villa, I worked there for 12 hours at a time and really loved the place. Everything was so elegant looking.

The woman who hired me decided to put me and my husband up in a hotel room here at the Grand Del Mar for a few weeks so that I didn't have to drive all the way down to Del Mar to come to work. We stayed for 2 weeks and I have to tell you, the room was phenomenal! It worked out for my husband too since his job is in UTC so the drive to work wasn't bad for him.

The room service is awesome, a little pricey, but they're fast and you can order duck confit or creme brulee and feel like you're eating a 5 star fine dining meal in the comfort of your own room. Fortunately, all my meals were also covered by the family that hired me so I ate and stayed here for free.

The hotel rooms start at about $3-400 a night. We got to see a few weddings here and LeBron James was staying in a villa next door to us. Carrie PreJean also got married here so it was interesting to be able to stay at a place where Ferraris and Aston Martin were the norm.

Not gonna lie, I had VERY high expectations for this resort but they managed to exceed them!  The Grand Del Mar was rated as the num 1 hotel in SD on Travelosity, that coupled with their 15 stars from Forbes really hyped it up for me.  However, from the minute we pulled up to the beautiful grounds to check out, the service was impeccable!

We got to the resort a whole 2 hours before check in but they got us checked in and into our beautiful room in no time.  We used their beach shuttle service and a very nice driver named Brent took us to the quaint town of Del Mar, and pointed out some local eateries and directions to get to the beach.  The fact that this hotel provides a chauffeur service (within 15 miles of the resort) was SUCH a nice touch! Especially when they drive you around in an S class!

Rooms: 5 stars, very luxurious, a lot of gold gilded frames everywhere..even around our TV! lol Nice bathrooms, comfy beds, and complimentary coffee and bottled water in the room.

Service: 5 stars, they knew us by name and everyone had a smile on their face and were all very friendly

Grounds: 5 stars, they have a beautiful golf course, hiking trails, an equestrian center, a 5 star spa AND a 5 star restaurant, what more can you want?

Breathtaking Grounds.  Just stepping foot onto the property, Ups your own personal value!

I've been to a private party in one of the Ballrooms here, the cocktail hour was out on the terrace and dinner & dancing was moved inside the ballroom.  The staff was very attentive throughout the event.  The dinner was a buffet service that included a children's station, and everything tasted really good.

I've spent a little time in the cafe.  There is a decent selection of Gelato and various sweet treats.

I didn't stay the night in one of the rooms, but I did use my friends shower in his suite to get ready for a private event and the room was spectacular!

My husband and I love this place.  It is a perfect little getaway because the service is outstanding, the food is wonderful, and the rooms are beautiful.  The TVs are a bit outdated but according to the staff, they are going to be purchasing new ones for all the rooms.  Oh, and great gym and the spa is fantastic!

I have nothing bad to say about the Grand Del Mar & honestly how could I? It's only about 7 years old but it feels as if it's been there forever (in a good way!) & the service & amenities are top notch. I've stayed at many 5 star resorts & the service here is far superior, they treat you like the kings & queens that you are & no detail is overlooked from the hotel itself to the rooms to the housekeeping to the food to the concierge to the valet. All the restaurants were fabulous but the breakfast was out of this world & the lobster & corn tacos at the lobby bar were more than memorable. The extensive wine list & creative mixed drinks are also a fun & delish treat. Would definitely recommend it!

What a beautiful space. As an architect, I recognize the design details and this place is immaculately designed.

The drinks we got were delicious and the service very un-pretentious. For $13-15 a cocktail, it's well worth the atmosphere and tasty drink.

This place is the definition of customer service.  We were blown away time and time again by each experience with a staff member during our stay.  Very personable and kind while providing the most professional service in the business today.  Words can't express how great the Grand Del Mar is.  A true 5 star establishment.

Fabulous resort with incredible staff and impeccable facilities and surroundings. Even the croissants at the take out cafe are out of this world. Only thing I would improve is the atmosphere of the Amaya restaurant. Since it is the main eating venue it could use a little more light and cheer at night given that is frequented by most of the families that visit. Do not let this keep you from visiting this special place.

If possible I'd give this place 10 Stars. My husband, son (5yrs old) and I visited June 2014. Upon checking in my son was allowed to pick a toy from lobby toy chest. About 10mins later the bellman escorted us to our room, when we entered we were speechless. There was a cookie with gummy bears on a plate with chocolate writing that read, "Welcome, Dylan (our son)"! Since all rooms come with adult sized robes/slippers there was a toddler sized laying on my sons bed when we arrived. We all enjoyed the heated pools, kids club, spa, golf course and very comfortable beds. The food and drinks throughout the whole resort was delicious. My husband enjoyed a round of golf and said it was one of the nicest courses he's ever played. I enjoyed a massage at the spa which was pure bliss. During my spa appointment my son had a blast in the supervised kids club. There was a night my husband and I enjoyed a nice dinner together and checked out the resorts on site lounge. Our son stayed in the supervised kids club where they fed him dinner. We knew we probably wouldn't make it before closing hours (10pm) to get him, so the hotel arranged the onsite nanny to care for him after closing. The moment she took over and got him to our room she sent us text updates every half hour, putting us at ease and allowing for a great night out. The GDM made our trip to SD truly memorable. We're planning another family vacation May 2015 and The Grand Del Mar is where we'll be! :)

For the past three unbelievable nights my son and I again were transported to the 350 million dollar villa in "Tuscany" called The Grand Del Mar where all our five senses were in for a real treat. We especially enjoyed our time at the spa/adult pool where we found serenity. The afternoon breeze often delivered the scent of jasmine flowers ; the under water music in the pool dissipated all tension and stress; the gorgeous and magnificent grounds are a smorgasbord for our eyes; the taste of casual to fine dining always satisfied our appetites; and the over 30 types of marble and wood at this exceptional resort are a delight to any touch!

This is our fifth visit to The Grand Del Mar and each time we return "home", staff never seem to forget our names or our familiar faces. They always manage to make us feel so special and valued at The Grand Del Mar.

The resort grounds and rooms are immaculately spic and span; there isn't any wear and tear to be seen anywhere. Everything at the resort exudes opulence and extravagance. Each time we come to San Diego is to come "home to our family" at the Grand Del Mar.

A big thank you to all the staff at The Grand Del Mar for elevating this magnificent property to be the Best of the Best!

We will see you again in August! A big thank you once again for helping us experience Xanadu right here in San Diego's own "Tuscany!"

Absolutely beautiful resort in a gorgeous setting.  Exceptional staff.  There is a daily activity list put in the room when serviced.  So much to do from golfing, spa, horseback riding, hiking, pools, personal driver to beach with towels, umbrella, chair and blankets and more.  The month I was there Porsche gave complimentary 2hr access to car of your choice.  Definitely a 5+ star resort.

The Grand Del Mar is an exceptional resort--beautiful, luxurious and relaxing.
I love the rooms, the Spa, the grounds and the pools; in addition it has an
incredible array of children's activities:  Explorers' Club (lots of arts and crafts).
I love the sculptures, the nature preserve, golf, the pools, and more!

However, what sets it apart is the outstanding staff and employees who
make you feel so welcome.  They are the most professional, detailed and
caring group of people I have ever met:  housekeeping, the valets,
Adam, Martin, Zarko Lucic, Nahida, Francisco and Enrique --everyone I have met
    on the property!.

Adam, the Front Desk Manager, and Zarko Lucic, the Assistant Front Manager
are truly the best managers I have ever met in any hotel around the globe.
They are so helpful, kind and informative.  The Grand Del Mar employs
outstanding young men and women from Brazil, Serbia, Germany, and
other countries who really give the place a wonderful international sense
of culture and hospitality.  It is clear Mr. Manchester has created a cohesive
team to run his world class resort.

Today and yesterday I had the good fortune to experience the wonderful
detailed service from Jaime or James, Martin, David, Balia, Nicholas,
and Brendan.  Balia helped me with a thread on my daughter's tank top.
Nahida wrote me a lovely birthday note with beautiful red roses displayed
so beautifully on a tray.  Zarko provided me a pretty orchid plant for our
room and Adam found the perfect room of light, color and views for
our vacation.  Then I returned to my room to find out I would receive
some champagne and torte for my belated birthday of last Sunday!!!
While I was getting that special treat here comes Francisco and Enrique
to assist me with the fridge for our family goodies--funny, helpful and
right on top of my needs with my daughter.

What a vacation~  What really makes this place is the staff.  I think
Ms. Capshaw who is in charge of the Spa and Fitness Center as
well as the Explorer's Club which has a myriad of arts and crafts
for children of all ages is great!!! She just spontaneously showed me around
her area; she was so enthusiastic about her work and job.

It is clear that there is real teamwork at the Grand Del Mar and
employees are treated well and are real professionals!

I have traveled extensively around the world and I consider it a world-class
resort--the best in the United States and internationally as well.

It is the penultimate--the best of the best!  It is the crème de crème.

Note the double pineapples above the arched walkway between
the children's and family pool; it is a symbol of hospitality that
shines through at the Grand Del Mar.

I would highly recommend it for an extended stay with family and friends!

It is a $350 million Tuscany villa on 400 acres with American pizazz, class,
panache with real warmth and sincerity from everyone who works there!!
They are great team and Doug Manchester, the owner, has my kudos
for creating a world-class internationally sophisticated yet Tuscan
    (American style) resort!!!!

The Villas are beautiful too for timeshares/stays, too.

The Grand Del Mar is a wonderful place!  Come and see for yourself!
    Love, love love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our room was beautiful! See the attached pics! And it was stocked wtih complimentary chocolates on our pillows and complimentary coffee and espresso machine!! Tres chic!

I wanted direct access to the pool and was soo thankful to learn we were placed near the 'adult' pool... far far away from the family pool.. just for some special quite time to lay out in the sun! we had the ultimate relaxation weekend!!

Just went here over the 4th of July and had a spectacular time with the family!! Hahaha ;) I'm so cleaver LOL This is my favorite place to stay at when I am in San Diego. The property is so beautiful, elegant and peaceful. The service is superior and the staff is remarkable!

The golf course here is a 7,160 yard par 72 course. After I checked in I went right to the course to play a round. If you don't know me I am a GOLF fanatic. I absolutely LOVE to play golf. Anyway, the course is in immaculate shape and the greens are in top condition.

Since we were here for the Fourth of July they had a Grand Fourth of July Celebration! There was live music by The John Stanley Band, food buffet, face painting, photo booth, and Fireworks on the Aria Lawn. Some of the sides they had at the buffet were a few different green salads, fresh grilled veggies, roasted corn, baked beans and potato salad. My favorite meat was the roasted pig!!! They also had hamburgers, turkey burgers and hot dogs. Now for the best part!! There was a sundae ice cream bar with all the fixings, peach pie, apple pie, cheesecake, cupcakes, funnel cake, and mini sugar doughnuts that melted in your mouth!!!!

If you are looking for an awesome getaway and want to be pampered this is the place to go!!!

I've been a fan of The Grand Del Mar since I first stepped foot on their property. This resort is very classy, but not stuffy. The customer service is nothing but short, and they will accommodated to your each and every needs with no questions asked! No wonder Lebron James got married at this exclusive resort. I am lucky enough to frequent the spa, and every time I leave there I feel like a new person. The spa staff is always welcoming, and a pleasure. The massage therapist that I always choose to see is, Amalia. She is the absolute BEST!!!

The Grand Del Mar does not disappoint!!!

I stayed at The Grand Del Mar for four days in June and it made for the most memorable of experiences.  The people and property are as good as it gets.  Karina and her concierge colleagues started off my great service experience by accommodating a few requests before arrival.  Zarko at the front desk was most gracious including improving which room I stayed in when the original room I was supposed to be in wasn't serviced yet.  When he hand selected my alternative room and I asked him about its characteristics he offered that "This is the room I would want to stay in."  He couldn't have been more right.  There are too many people to list, however other areas of solid service include Bell Services, Business Center (Doreen is super helpful), Car Service (Mark rocks!), Room Service, and Turn-Down Service.

Now for the food - eat at Amaya at least once for lunch and another for dinner.  Both times request a table overlooking the lawn and fire pit.  For lunch variety is the spice of life so just order a few to several appetizers.  Please see photo for the tasty and visual delights.  Budget permitting, Addison is a must.  Arrive really hungry and order the seven-course carte blanche experience then let the chefs work their culinary magic.  They'll most certainly give you a bonus course or three.  Be sure to witness the kitchen, it's impeccable!

For activities the golf course will not disappoint, I highly suggest splurging for a caddy.  They're worth every penny.  Walk around the grounds and take in the beautiful architecture, perfectly groomed landscape, and striking sculptures.  If you insist on temporarily leaving this Shangri-La then use the complimentary car service for a trip to La Jolla.  Ask for an outside table at Cody's so the ocean view will compliment the good food.

The Grand's facilities, staff, spa and restaurants were all amazing. So what's the problem right? Well...I'm glad you asked. The absolutely astonishing number of unfettered bratty children running roughshod all over the place. I'm talking outside at Amaya during dinner, sprinting up and down the hotel hallways. Look, I understand that kids will be kids and the behavior of the kids is really an indictment of the parents as opposed to the actual kids but damn. This review should definitely be a five star review but the abundance of kids carrying on prevents it from being that. Too bad because we really enjoyed everything else.

I couldn't believe how beautiful this place is, at $600 a night it better be, but it was even beyond my expectations.  Everything was marble and stone and immaculate.  The service was incredible.  Everybody greeted us by name, even though we were only there one night we were treated like we were regulars.  People knew us and genuinely seemed to want to help with everything.  I can't believe how genuinely friendly everyone was.

I'm a typically cynical person so when I go to a hotel or whatever and people are nice I'm always thinking yah yah bs bs I know you want money but here I felt like they were just nice and if they got tipped, great. Not once did I feel any of the staff were being disingenuous.

In particular, a specific shout out to Chris the bellhop, that guy is awesome.

The pool was amazing, the towel service and drinks and what not. sigggghhhh I could go on for days but I felt disconnected from the world when I was there. If not for my stupid phone notifying me of emails I felt like I was in a different country.  We went for our fifth wedding anniversary and it was the best thing we could've done.

My wife and I had just finished the Ragnar Relay race and all our teammates wanted to go back to North County San Diego instead of staying downtown. We searched for a hotel but were shocked ,even as locals, at how expensive the hotels were. Halfway home I found a deal on Expedia for The Grand. The price was right and we got dropped off. We all laughed upon arrival because we just were part of a 30+ hour, 194 mile race... And despite our shoddy appearance they welcomed us happily and professionally. From that moment on every single aspect of this venue was pure elegance, top notch service, and supreme comfort. My wife and I have only been married a week and both being in the military we'll have to wait for a honeymoon. Yet, coming here and enjoying the ambiance, the food, the impeccable room was enough to feel like we took a tiny vacation. We have never been, never, that exceeded every single expectation of a hotel/resort. Nothing downtown, and no resorts nearby (I.e . La Costa) can hold a candle to The Grand.  Annual stay there is now a must for the future.

We visited The Grand Del Mar resort June 20th - 22nd for our 8th year wedding anniversary - as my wife states, this was the grown-up part of our So. California vacation, a welcome break between the hustle and bustle of our stops in San Diego and finally in Anaheim!

All I can say is this hotel was one of the most beautiful locations we've been to in a VERY long while - the luxurious grounds provide a beautiful setting to walk, golf, swim, visit a spa, eat, and just overall relax!

Our room had a small balcony that provided an excellent view of one of the many beautiful garden areas of the Grand Del Mar, perfect for sitting in the morning or evening.

The in-room amenities were beyond amazing for this family and well appreciated. The bathtub was deep enough our daughter could not sit in when full - large enough for a couple to sit and relax together.

But the atmosphere is not just the physical presence of this luxurious hotel but the people who run it - EVERYONE was awesome; friendly, attentive, conscientious, personable, etc. From the valet, the front desk, to the restaurant, and pool - EVERYONE made sure we were well taken care of.

Even though this was the adult portion of our trip, our daughter played a huge role in identifying how marvelous this hotel is - everyone we met made sure she felt the importance of her being here, asking questions and getting to know her and treating her as a young important person. And what was tough was when we went to our next destination, she understandably misunderstood that the attentiveness of it's clients at The Del Mar wasn't the same standard at all hotels.

Finally, to note, during our visit there were many other families visiting the Grand Del Mar but also a number of "conventions" or special occasions - even though these significant gatherings were occurring our family never once felt like we were secondary to these other clients, many obvious well established people in society - and in witnessing the staff interactions with these other people, they were treated just as well as we were - as the most important person in the room!

Overall our visit here was especially memorable and if we can afford the time during our next Southern California visit we will most definitely make an effort to stay once again at the Grand Del Mar!

To the staff and management team of The Grand Del Mar, thank you very, very much for a most memorable and relaxing atmosphere during our visit!!!

I can't even think of one negative thing to say about The Grand Del Mar. It was first class treatment from the second we arrived all without an air of pretentiousness...hmm, or wait, maybe we are pretentious.....NAAA!!!

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and Michelle greeted us at the counter and showed us the way to our room. She was wonderful and we saw her many other times throughout our stay and always enjoyed chatting with her.

Upon arrival we saw we had a voicemail. We called and they said they had an "amenity" for us and could they bring it?

We were completely surprised when Jose wheeled in a table with sparking wine and chocolate covered strawberries with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate!

They send you a personal email after you make your reservation asking if you are celebrating anything special. I emailed that we really weren't but that we never got to go away for our 10th anniversary so this was kind of like a little anniversary trip. I never expected this!

Jose was wonderful as well. Very polite and interactive. We were watching the Brazil v Spain soccer game when he came in so we talked a bit about the game with him.

The grounds are beautiful!! The husband and I went on a 7 mile run going up past Addison and running through the homes up there before we hit Shaw and the Equestrian  trails. It was a gorgeous run and when we got back they were quick to get us water.

I could go on and on, but I will just say it's wonderful. I hear they have a great kids program. I was surprised to see as many kids as we did, so we might return again with our kids in tow.

AMAZING! I live in Del Mar and had never visited this hotel but I have heard great things. Although I did not stay overnight as a guest, I went for drinks one mellow weekend night. It was cold outside but I wanted to sit by the firepit so they brought us shawls to put over our legs and shoulders. I ordered a Hot Toddy and it came in a cute glass mug with a mini jar of honey and a lemon slice. The scenery was perfect as we overlooked a large area where I was told weddings are held. I could definitely see why anyone would want their wedding here. It was beautiful, spacious, and the service was great, as I would expect with a high-end hotel.

I would definitely come here for a stay-cation or another time for dinner and drinks!

My sweet husband booked a weekend staycation to celebrate my birthday here in August 2013. From the moment we checked in to the minute we checked out, the service was incredible. I suppose you expect a certain level of service from 5-star resorts, but a lot of times there is also a little bit of pretentiousness that comes along with it, especially when you look younger than you really are. Thankfully, we didn't experience any of that during our stay. Everyone, from the front desk, to the bellhop, to the housekeeping staff was friendly, polite, and helpful. We had our dog with us and she was treated like a first class guest too! They require guests with dogs to book a room on the first floor so that you can easily access the lawn area from your room. It was so convenient for us to let our dog out to run around and do her business directly from our room. They also provided her with dog bowls (and two bottles of water!) and a doggie bed.

The resort itself is just beautiful and so elegantly appointed from the rooms to common areas. We enjoyed room service, a casual dinner at Amaya one evening and a more formal dinner at Addison another evening. We enjoyed massages at the spa as well. The spa is not as big as ones you'd find in Vegas, but it was very nice. There is a jacuzzi tub, steam room, sauna, showers, bathrooms, lockers, relaxation room, and outdoor patio area.

I never thought I would enjoy a staycation as much as we did here. It really felt like we were on a vacation miles away from home when we were only 15 minutes away. It has completely changed my thoughts on staycations and I hope we get a chance to come back here again!

From their pool service to their bars and restarunts, they do it right. This visit was with a mere 20 people in the lounge bar and piano area. The service was pretty good considering. The decor is gorgeous especially now during the Holiday. The trees in all their glitter with fires roaring make it warm and special. I had the jalapeño margarita or should I say a couple. Perfectly spicy and with the agave on the side, just perfect. Did I mention it was served in a large stemless goblet? Nothing worse than a skimpy drink, and they do not disappoint. We had the lobster tacos. Generous portions, two on a plate off of their app menu. (Not a whole lot to choose from in the bar but good options). The lobster was chopped into small pieces mixed with some veggies. Served with lemon and aioli on the side which was nice. It was good, not the best but pricey at $24. We also had the ahi tuna roll which was tempura (fried) crunchy, and generous with the ahi served with soy and wasabi. I usually stay away from fried but a couple of these was worth a try. Enjoyable. I also like they serve a tray of fried snap peas, and spicy mixed nuts. Just salty enough to keep wetting your whistle

This and the ritz Berlin are too two with hotel du chocolat in st Lucia an interesting alternative. If you stay here Addison is a great restaurant but so is the hotel restaurant. Best breakfast scramble and oatmeal pancakes I've had in over three years here. And I travel a lot. And I live in New York. I'll definitely be back. Definitely. You should stay here.

This place is so luxurious, service was nice.
I know i am only awarding 4 starts but i felt a bit rushed, Champagne during the Royal afternoon tea came out after the tea was served and i thought it should be prior to.
The selection of champagne is phenomenal.
You have a choice of the Veuve Clicquot brut NV or the Charles Heidsieck Rose Reserve, take my advise and go with the Charles heidsieck!
Both are wonderful and a great deal as an add on to tea, i love bubbles and i highly recommend you try the Rose which isn't available by the glass in many places. this is a great chance to experience it and taste by the glass (normally a glass can run you around $20 dollars).
The three courses were plated beautifully but i was a bit disappointed to be served the second and third at the same time.
Really, my favorite part of the experience was the champagne.
Good tea service, i think the timing can be corrected next time and i will ask to be served each course separately if possible.

My husband and I took advantage of the three day weekend, and spent three lovely nights at The Grand Del Mar.  We enjoyed this trip even more than our first stay over a year ago.  It is such a relaxing place, and the service is outstanding.  My trip to the spa was perfect.  Our dinner at Addison was phenomenal too.  Although we planned on leaving the resort, we actually stayed on property the entire time.

My only complaint is the pool food.  There are very few vegetarian options, and the veggie burger actually made my husband sick one afternoon.  The veggie burger was not on the menu, but our server offered it to us, so I wonder if it was just really old.  I wish that they would create a pool menu that reflects the high quality seen throughout the rest of the hotel.

The chocolate covered Oreos given at turndown service are always a treat!  Our Nespresso machine was not working properly this trip, so the coffee was not great.

Overall, we had a fabulous trip.

The Grand Del Mar is a beautiful property.  I can't  give it the full 5 stars as I did not actually stay here but was on property for drinks.  The lobby, decor, bars and lounges are very pretty.  The grounds are spectacular.  The waitstaff is very friendly and very polished and professional.  I would like to stay here one day but the rates are pretty high so I need to make it for a special occasion.  Very nice property!

From the start we were really impressed. They arranged a car to pick us up from the airport, and when we arrived at the hotel a nice lady helped us out of the car and guided us to our room where she showed us around and some of the functions of the room. All of this hours before check in time. We dined at the Lobby for breakfast one day and then again for Valentines Prix fixer. We also indulged ourselves at Shanghai Terrace. We really enjoyed drinks at The Bar. Every meal was delicious.

One star... not because the of the rooms or the actual resort.

I recently got married at the grand del mar and although we had a wonderful experience while we were there, we realized at home that my jewelry had been stolen. This must have happened while they were transferring my items from the preparation room to the wedding room... basically while I was walking down the isle. Obviously I had no control over my items at all.

The Grand Del Mar refused to fully compensate us for my stolen jewelry. They gave me a fraction of the money (500) and basically told me to take it or leave it. I'm very disappointed especially after we spend so much money for our wedding at that hotel.

Yes, we loved how beautiful the hotel was but taking advantage of a bride while she is walking down the isle is just so so sad.

I loooooove this hotel and really enjoy working here.
The guests always have positive things to say about the stay too.
The views are amazing and the valet crew are top notch.

Great property, i thought it would be by the water but it wasn't.
We went there for afternoon tea. The resort is beautiful and the inside of the property is full of details, elegant.
Self parking is difficult to find, ask before entering the property.
afternoon tea is served in the library, small and quiet library with soft lighting.
The choice of bubbles is the best I've seen in san diego.
for just a little extra, you can upgrade to the royal tea and have a glass of good champagne.
service was thoughtful, i enjoyed our visit. My wife wants to go back asap.

Hands down, most creative and equally delicious sea restaurant I have been to.  I have eaten my way through Chicago and NYC (both nice) but Shakti kills it when it comes to flavor, value and creativity.  So. Freaking. Good.

Cute area to walk around in.

    Enjoy!! Pri$e

The location, room and service are "Grand". The rooms spacious, but I found the mattress and pillow uncomfortable. Club "M" is a fun resort club with an "older" crowd. Good for people watching, or maybe not. The Club security is wack, hotel guests do not get priority.

This is a great hotel, I've stayed twice and both have been such a pleasure for all of us  and they spoil you so well!
Their suites are somewhat the best in town, and the good course is comparable to few!!
Overall great hotel and checkout the spa too

Treat yourself! Amaya, which has a terrace is a great place to have quality food that's presented as artwork but unlike other high end hotels the prices and portions are spectacular. Trout and beet salad was light but full of flavor. Also try the chocolate desert with mango sorbet. I'm a chocolate lover but for once i skipped it... the mango sorbe is delice'

Truly a five star establishment. Quiet and relaxing place. When you drive into the premises, it's reminiscent of that view of Kellerman's from Dirty Dancing. This place is grand indeed. It's a traditional place, crown molding, a lot of European artwork, gold trim. Garden outside has French feel.  Fitness center is awesome. Fruit infused water, apples, headphones if you need. Nespresso machine in our bedroom. Chocolate covered Oreos and rose petals (just a few but it's a nice touch) placed on bed every evening (turn down service). Dined at Amaya- our waiter was a sommelier. (Lobster and crab pappardelle dish was best). Addison (wow) five star restaurant.
Needed just a short stop for some quiet, pampering, and relaxation. This place was it. Every single hotel member was amazing.

Another fabulous stay on every level. Management's attention to detail and customer satisfaction shows on every level. You don't come here for a bargain, but if you're looking for an exquisite experience then this is the place. The food was superb from the Filet perfectly cooked at dinner to the Grand Burger and Garlic Shrimp Greek Salad by the pool. Both the adult relaxation pool and the kid pool area have their place and perfectly suited for the experience . The golf course is tough, but the fairways and greens are perfectly manicured. The 2 queen bed room was spacious and opulent. Walking the grounds in the morning and at sunset simply puts you at ease. Can't wait to come back!

I've only visited this hotel for a conference, so I can't comment hotel rooms or service. But the grounds are immaculate. Driving onto the property gives you a very exclusive feel. It feels very large and remote yet quaint an cozy once you step outside your vehicle. Inside the hotel you get an exclusive resort feel. But this is San Diego, so friendly service abounds. Our group was catered very well and from start to finish, everything was top notch.

Was here two weeks ago for this first time and all I can say is WOW! Beautiful hotel, beautiful location, and the best part? Amazing service
You would think that would be a given since its a high end hotel but after staying at the St. Regis in monarch beach I realize it's not. I will be definitely going back either with just my husband or with my kids in tow! Loved it!

The Grand Del Mar is an amazing hotel. No doubt in my mind why it is rated the #1 hotel in San Diego on Tripadvisor. The hotel is beautiful! The rooms are so elegant and very spacious. The hotel offers many free activities. We went on the morning hike to the waterfall and it was worth waking up early for. The tennis courts are the fanciest and nicest I have seen. It has many nice restaurants including Addison, which in my opinion is one of the best restaurants and dining experiences in San Diego.

My mom chose this place for Mother's Day celebration, she wanted to try a different place. We usually like to celebrate at the Del, but why not switch it up. It was definitely a different dining experience than what we are accustomed to. There was no direct staff assigned to the table, no explanation of the brunch and quality of the food was mediocre. It was 108 per person and when we received the bill for 3 of us, there was already an 18% tip included for their poor service. And as of today it looks as if they are attempting to charge an additional 47 dlls. Definitely disappointed, will not return.

I was lucky enough to have a friend staying at The Grand Del Mar. She invited me there and we spent the day lounging poolside.  We enjoyed some lunch and cocktails while enjoying the gorgeous weather. The poolside service was pretty slow, but that was the only negative. It's probably the nicest and most luxurious hotel I have seen in San Diego, hope I can go back and indulge more soon!

Short review: If you are considering this resort, don't think twice and book it.

Long review: I am not sure that I can fully do this place justice. This hotel offers outstanding personalized services beyond anything we've ever experienced. We've experience wonderful service at a number of properties, but I think their treatment of our family - especially our children - was bar none the best.

I was a bit worried this hotel would be too fancy for our kids, but I was proved wrong immediately upon check-in. Upon walking in, our kids were offered a toy of their choice from a treasure chest. They then found cute little travel pillows in the room for each of them.  Within 15 minutes of us getting situated in our room, in comes room service with a plate with two giant cookies and our kid's names written out in chocolate along with some chocolate covered strawberries in honor of our anniversary.  Along with the delivery came a hand written note welcoming us and wishing us well on this special occasion.

We arrived close to dinner time, so we called the Concierge to make a dinner reservation at Amaya, the resort's most casual restaurant.  We mentioned that we wanted to get a drink in the lobby before dinner because we'd had a long day at Legoland and wanted to relax a bit. When we arrived at the restaurant we were greeted with another handwritten note.  This one offered us a complementary round of drinks and came with a couple of lego toys for our daughters.  We were blown away by the royal treatment!  Not to mention how wonderful the food was and grateful that the children's menu had a long list of choices- including healthy ones!

The rest of our stay, the service continued to be outstanding. We spent a day at the pool and had amazing food service.  The family pool area has three pools and is quite generous in size. The pool is heated to a wonderful temperature, so if your kids want you to swim with them all day, you won't freeze. The adult pool area is equally nice as well and I wouldn't hesitate to go back with just my husband or some girlfriends - which I hope to do in the future. They also offer a free beach service where they drive you to the beach with chairs, umbrella and beach toys.  It was awesome!  Honestly, I can't wait to go back. Both of my kids cried on our way to the airport.  We had to explain to them that we can't live at this hotel forever.

Everyone is extremely helpful and service oriented here. It is no wonder this is a highly ranked and rated hotel. Definitely worth the splurge.  Thank you Grand Del Mar for an amazing weekend in San Diego.

Gorgeous grounds, pleasant staff, delisious food and awesome view and room! We stayed here this past mothers day in the grand villa suite, 3rd floor. Lovely room, fireplace, kitchenette,  separate toilet & shower area (I only wish there was a bath!) We saw their horses, went to the pond, played at the pool, indulged at the wonderful relaxing spa and relaxed on our veranda. I can't wait to come back for father's day!

So I'm just some shmuck that actually saved up enough money to treat my boyfriend and I to something wonderful and holy shit this place is the bomb-diggity. It's truly a five star establishment. I inquired if there was a microwave in the room, normally there wasn't but room service brought us a freakin' microwave!!!  If you're rating this hotel 3 or 4 stars, ya'll need a slice of humble pie because the Grand Del Mar is the most ritzyest place with the best service. I intend to return here in the future maybe get to do some of the activities they offer.  Seriously though  this hotel is nothing less than exquisite. Well done Grand Del Mar, well done.

Ok had to give them 3 star not 4 because
    1. Its wasn't a separate area for high tea. You could see other people who were staying in the resort just waiting around. One person across from us actually had their feet on the table!!!
    2. Low tables kinda awkward
    3. Added cost if you want to try a different tea.
    4. You serve yourself, adding this comment because at the Dorchester in London you never poured your own tea.
    5. Sandwiches were cute but flavor was lacking.
    6. Scones were the best i had!!! Beat London scones!
    7. Lemon cream for the scones was amazing!!!
    8. I got the ambrosia tea which was awesome :)
    9. Sweet pastries were disappointing but very pretty.

    $40 per person

For high tea in san diego i would say this is not the top location but still fun n with great company you will have a great time :)

This review is for afternoon tea only. This place is ridiculously schmancy, so props to them for letting people self park for free. The tea is apparently usually served in the library, which is charming, but since we had a larger group we were seated out more towards the lobby in a more open area. The setting was matched and elegant and complete with roses and rose petals. We did the $40 option because tea was the main attraction (why distract with wine or champagne?). The tea itself was delicious and I only regret that you couldn't try more than one flavor. First course consists of the finger sandwiches. The presentation of these was excellent and my only complaints with these would be that the bread seemed a bit stale in a couple bites, and they were a little bland. While the sandwiches are dainty, you get 4 or so, so they are reasonably filling. The second and third courses are served together, which to me made it feel like only 2 courses total rather than 3, but ok. I'm usually not a fan of scones, but these were AMAZING. Warm and crumbling like they were fresh out of the oven, they were buttery with just enough sweetness. The lemon curd, preserves, and Devonshire cream they were served with were heaven. I expected the scones to be the least exciting course, but they were actually the tastiest part for me. The desserts were cute and had a good variety, but I would have been thrilled to trade all of them for another scone.

All in all, it was a great experience. They do a good job with the ambiance and the variety of dainties offered, and they kept the teapots full. It was something I would definitely like to do again.

This is a review regarding the afternoon tea experience we had -

So first, I have to say, the food quality is beyond average. Every piece that we had was full with lots of different tastes and layers. The first course to me was very impressive, we got 4 different types of sandwishes - smoke salmon, cucumber, egg and turkey. Each was individually well-prepared. (See photos) the second and third layers were presented in a 2-tier rack. Lots and lots of deliciousness! The pistachio muffin, hmm, that was nutty with good texture. The fruit tart, definately a must-try - It was almost like the jamy kind of texture but with lots of freshness. The scones were probably the best ones I had (giving that I had tried multiple places and have traveled around the world).

Overall, we are pretty satisfied with the food quality. Not just that, we would definately come back because of their excellent service. The servers constantly checked on us and even brought the kid some toys. Did I mention about the price? At a 5-star restaurant like this, getting food from here only costs 40 dollars a person! If you ever consider where to spend a good afternoon at, make a reservation 24 hours ahead of time, I guarantee that you will be happy to come here.
