When it comes to hair, ask for Katie! She is amazing and has true talent when it comes to cuts and color. Each time I have gone to her she has given me exactly what I wanted! I have gotten alot of compliments on my hair since I started going to her :)

Absolutely wonderful day spa here at this resort!  The customer service is second to none.  The treatments and therapists are top notch.  You can't beat the amenities here.  The only thing that was lack luster was the lunch I received that came with the spa package.  I was surprised by this because we have dined at all of the restaurants at this resort, including in room dining during our many stays here.  That was not the focus though anyway and it definitely did not ruin the experience. I believe it was probably just the particular dish that was ordered.  All else was fab!   I will most definitely be back for more  at this spa!

Beautiful grounds and very nice interior. However, I am being honest here...the service stinks. Especially the pool-side service. I am a big Four Seasons fan and there is nothing like the Four Seasons service.

I think this place is gorgeous and would love to spend more time here.  The only thing is - as someone who LOVES and spends money on spa services - I find their pricing ridiculously high.  Especially considering all the options nearby.  Just my 2 cents.

Wonderful weekend getaway.  The hotel was gorgeous inside and out.  You don't realize how big it is until you start walking to the pool, restaurant, etc.  We had the best time!

My wife and I love this place since it is only 2 miles from our house so we go here at least twice a month.  Maria and I love the old world european feel and the amazing attention to detail and craftmanship of the resort.  She actually takes friends and business associates there and give them minitours of the place!  Once I was bragging about this to friends while we were having dinner at the Amaya bistro and Doug Manchester, the builder and owner, came to our table and said "it is true that she gives tours of the place?"  I said it was true and embarrassing.  So he said "Well if that is the case, I have a private villa here and you can use it anytime you want."  It was my birthday the next day and I was going to jump on the offer but my wife anticipated from my face what I was about to do and gave me a swift kick to my shin under the table.  Too bad.  Because the villas here are 4000 square feet!  The villas are their version of timeshares if you can call them that.

We once went to Addison, their highly rated restaurant that is in its own complex and where we were driven by a towncar from the main hotel,  for my wife's birthday. The experience was surreal.  They had video screens to the kitchen that gave you the feel of a chef's table without the heat of the kitchen.  They had little padded stools for all the ladies purses!  I think it was an 8 course meal with my whole family that was incredible but you cannot do this restaurant frequently except for special events unless you have alot of money burning a hole in your pocket or had stock in Qualcomm that you bought before 1999 that split 8 times and made many millionaires.

I also sent my wife to their day spa for her birthday.  She had a chance to get a workout in their gym before her massage that was followed by a lunch and then a facial.  She said it was the best birthday gift I have given her in 15 years.   Boy, now I want to go.

Here is a little known secret.  Every evening there is live entertainment in the area immediately after you pass the check in counters.   We go there a couple of times a month and have a light dinner made of the appetizers in the adjacent area next to the piano where they have their live performances.  The area has several sofas in a U configuration and we use the low coffee tables in front of the sofas as our dining table.

Maria also uses their ballroom and even their cathedral for her business conference for the CommNexus events we co-chair.

I also found out that the Grand Del Mar is the only 5 star resort in San Diego proper.  So La Jolla and Carlsbad where they have the Four Seasons doesn't count since they are not officially in San Diego even though they are part of San Diego county.

So yes, my wife and I am are fans of the Grand Del Mar!  Hear that Doug Manchester?  I might want to take you up on your offer of using your private villa in the future!

Note that my review was not contingent on this impromptu offer that he probably forgot by now. Just to let you know:)

Well, unfortunately I cannot attest to the quality of services provided here. In all actuality they are probably awesome, which is why I made an appointment here in the first place.

So, here is my story... I call up and say hey, I want a ton of services ASAP. Great, the lady tells me and starts booking appointments for the very next day. I was totally stoked because I am in a lot of pain due to an injury and I really just needed a nice pampering, relaxing, healing day all to me (and GOD my hair needs help.) It is hard to look good when you don't feel it... so anyways... We get to the end and she asks me for a credit card to hold the appointments. DUH. I forgot about that part and just my luck my debit card had been stolen and I'm waiting for the replacement to arrive in the mail. She tells me not to worry and they'd make an exception for me this one time. YAY! Not. I get an *email* the next morning right before I was to leave telling me they weren't holding my spots because I didn't have a credit card number with them. They said they called me, but there was no record of it. No message on my voice mail.

So, really? I booked like 8 services for THE VERY NEXT DAY and the day after. You may be one of the classiest spa's around, but with customer service like this, I think I'd rather go somewhere that appreciates my business.

Really a bummer. :(

I recently visited the Grand del Mar after hearing about it from several friends. I have to say it was THE WORST EXPERIENCE of my life! We went during the Jimmie Johnson tournament and were there to have dinner with a friend after the tournament and they treated us like we were not good enough to be there. We were sitting by the pool as guests of our friend and about to order lunch when a waitress comes over and asks us what we are doing there. We told her and she proceeded to remove us from the pool area and sit in an area we were "allowed to have lunch" at. I was appalled but did not say anything. It took 30 minutes for our lunch to arrive and then the "friendly, 5 star service waitress " never came back to check on us. We had to go to the bar to get the bill. I have never been treated so rudely in my life. As we were guests, we absolutely would NEVER GO BACK EVEN IF IT WAS FREE!

Great hotel will def stay here again in the future. Its centrally located in the city and walking distance from just about everything. The rooms were extremely clean and service was great. Try the couples spa service, my wife convinced me to and I'm glad she did!

My Experience:
The bf surprises me with a last minute getaway for Memorial Day weekend.  I trust his hotel choices bc he is far more of a hotel snob than I am.  We arrive at the resort (which is quite inland for San Diego ish hotel "resort" in my opinion) and the grounds were quite nice. Think sprawling lawns and lot's of statues with waterfalls.  We arrive around 1 o'clock and they tell us our room isn't ready - which is completely OK, it is Memorial Day weekend.  But the girl says she'll take our phone number and call us when it's ready.  OK, but no offer to hold our bags, or let me get you a refreshment or head this way in the meanwhile.  I literally had to say to her "maybe you can hold onto our bags until the room is ready and point us in the direction of a nice lunch spot?"  "Sure" she says and points in a direction of one of the restaurants and outdoor pool lunch spots.  OK, so far not so good. The hotel is quite large so we kind of head in the direction she tells us, head down this staircase and come upon this pool area.  Which by the way we could not enter without a key card.  Awesome. Some kids come out and just happen to let us in.  This is where it gets almost comical.  Your instantly hit with the sound of screaming kids and worse their downright rude mothers.  Picture the neighborhood YMCA with added benefit of entitlement.  No problem, I look at my bf and say let's just get some lunch and a drink and we will make the best of this for the moment.  We go to an empty 4 table top with an umbrella and some horrible rude lady snarls, "No that table is going to be for the kids when the get out of the pool."  Ok Your Rudeness, no problem.  We walk over to another long empty table and sit down.  It takes about 15 minutes for any person resembling a server to come over to us.  And she only comes to tell us, "I am not a server but I can get you some menus if you would like."  Please and some water we reply.  "OK but you probably won't get a server for awhile, I keep telling them about tables but they yell at me."  HUH??  Now I just start smiling at the bf because I know he is hungry from the drive down, annoyed by the screaming children and rude people and now it's as if we would be lucky to get service at a hotel we are paying for and a lunch we know will be overpriced.  Wow, OK.  5 minutes goes by and the girl who clearly and repeatedly states "she is not a server" drops off 2 waters and menus.  Menus beyond average but at least we are getting somewhere.  We decide what we want to eat,  another 10 minutes goes by and someone approaches us, ahh finally we can order.  Nope, this person just needs to tell us that the table we are sitting at is reserved for a party of 7 and they forgot.  So basically MOVE AGAIN BEFORE WE even order.  My bf is starting to get so pissed off I am thinking we are getting back in the car and heading right back up to LA.  We sit next to another 2 top table in the blaring sun and I tell him don't worry at least we know what we want to eat and they have to know we are here now.  Another 10 minutes passes, some waiter guys comes towards our way, and stops and hits the table that we just had to move for!!At that moment I got up bc I knew we had both had enough and we start walking back toward the hotel, assumably to just leave all together.  I saw 2 open seats at the bar area and told my bf just to sit there with me and give it 1 last shot.  Besides, we were starving and even if we do decide to head out we needed to eat a little something.  The service at the bar area was mediocre at best but at least they were a step up from what was happening at the surrounding pool area.  NOW the actual food.  My bf burger was so small that the pickle was thicker than the meat patty.  I am not even exaggerating in the slightest.  Worse food/lunch I have ever had.  In & Out Burger is like Cut restaurant compared to the slop they call food here.  Even my drink, mint raspberry lemonade tasted like some frozen slushy that would taste better coming out of a tap at 7 11.  The bartender at least had the good sense to comp our beverages, he seemed even a little embarrassed by the state of affairs. We leave the pool area in hopes of a call from the front desk so we can decide if this place is worth staying.  The bf kept saying, this place is part of my American Express travel group and they have good reviews so I am confused. We walk a little and take in the scenery which was pleasant, especially as we moved away from the hyenas at the children's pool.

ROOM & SERVICE by the spa pool : OK  (Quieter pool area & more attentive staff.  I found the bed and pillows to be uncomfortable) SPA: GOOD Everything else: AWFUL
New management team needed, period. Such pretty grounds that could be nice for golf enthusiasts or hikers or even horse riders.  I also was hoping to try Addison restaurant but it is closed Sundays & Mondays.

i can only speak for the grounds, front entrance, staff, and the ballrooms as i did not stay here though attended a wedding that was held on their grounds. the grounds are pristine. the staff are friendly, courteous and prompt... and very easy on the eyes. the ballrooms were massive... love the high ceilings. the bathrooms were awesome, i loved the full door rather than the half door that allows people to peek from underneath. definitely a great place for a wedding... including indian weddings that allow elephants to walk the groom into the family.

My review is on the resort, and not the spa.  This place is a dream.  If you think you get pampered in Vegas, you have not seen what this hotel's staff can do for you.
The serenity pool is the most relaxing place ever...and the staff are immensely accommodating, friendly, professional, and just plain amazing.
Even the food you order by the pool is gourmet...that is how your entire experience will be.  If you stay here one night, or 30, I guarantee you that you will be miserable to have to leave this amazing resort.

This is a truly exceptional hotel. The customer service and attention to detail especially. The rooms are beautifully decorated and kept. The "explorer's club" is wonderful for children. There's so much to do, they could stay all day! Also, the food. Ah, the food is to die for! I couldn't believe how good it was. I will stay here again in a heartbeat. Wish I could live here!

First of all, this place is absolutely gorgeous...and in many ways, I booted them up to a 3 just because of the great ambiance. However, my massage was so so. This was the first time I came to this place, after a friend at work recommended it. For the price, I expected a lot more. I kept asking my masseuse to be more firm, and after a 2-3 requests, I just gave up and waited until it was over. If you like soft, relaxing massages, this is the place to go. But if you prefer a deep, firm massage, you need to go somewhere else.

As usual I was pleasantly greeted at check-in making me feel fancy, always addressing me by my last name.

I skipped the refresher tour since I knew my way around and went straight to the locker to get ready to work out in the fitness room. I was talking with the male concierge Kyle about the trails in the area and got really interested in coming back just for that, but couldn't run that day due to rain. I think you may be able to spot the swans, horses and peacocks from the trails as well.

24 hour fitness doesn't have anything on the world-class equipment within the fitness room! I was surprised to find that the treadmills have an iPod connection (with touch interface), a TV option within your own screen, USB stat download option and multiple tracking/routine options. Simply amazing! If you don't pass out from sheer shock, you can try the other equipment in the room, they have practically everything you could think of.

After my brisk workout I had lunch poolside where the staff was polite and made sure I was doing well. It wasn't the best day for the pool however due to the sun being stubborn. I ordered the Calamari and Grand Burger. Inexpensive, filling and delicious.

Moving on to my treatment I was apprehensive at first because "male" and "facial" are two words I never wanted to hear together. Jen my esthetician did an amazing job. With various creams, eucalyptus steam and a table that contured to my spine it was almost nap time. Her touch was very delicate but intentional on pressure points.

With the included arm and shoulder massage the hour flew by making my wish I scheduled an extra 30 minutes. I was told using the facilities after the facial could wash away the creams etc. but I wanted to take advantage of my time there.

I ended up back and the pool and went for a swim but found myself going from one side to the other completely underwater just to enjoy the music. The wonderful classical tones can only be heard once submerged. Standing in the pool dipping my ears underwater just didn't cut it for me.

At the end of it all, I kicked up my feet by the pool again and got some work done on my laptop. I know, that's just so fancy right?

This is a review for the spa.
Absolutely delightful.  They obviously knew what they were doing when they designed the facilities and trained the staff.  There was a lot of attention to detail and there was nothing lacking.  The staff was courteous and helpful, but very carefully not overbearing.  The pool outside was perfect, great place to have lunch.  I had one of the best massages I've ever had.  They were very careful to ask about all details - heat of room, of bed, of robe, depth of pressure.  The staff were in communication with each other, so they knew what my next treatment was, and gave me advice on how to time steam in between, etc.  Steam room had tons of steam and eucalyptus scented.
Impeccably furnished.  Beautiful lounge area with fire and outdoor patio, great place to sit and relax.  Refreshments indoors and spa lunch were both excellent (salmon with spinach salad and green juice).
Facial was good, not as awesome as the massage.  They use products designed for the spa, and I don't know if that is as good as getting a facial with a proven line of products.  I didn't break out afterward, but it didn't really make a difference in my appearance.
I can't comment on the price because it was paid ahead of time as a present.  I am usually sort of critical about the value of the places I go, and will pester my husband about how much things cost, but I didn't even ask, since it was such a great experience, I figured it was worth it.  That's a pretty high compliment in my book.

Each of these reviews says it all (except for anyone who give this place anything less than 4 stars because of some self centered minor inconvenience or another)..

You simply cannot find a more perfect hotel.  Anywhere. It's a leisurely sprawl of a place that rambles lazily over a green hill leaving the entrance and valet up on the third floor, rooms down below facing the back or a little plaza overlooking more rolling hills and outstanding landscaped gardens. Complete with gargantuan sculptures of stone men carving themselves free and sparkling fountains with excited horses spitting back into a pool. It feels like a Mediterranean estate. Gold leaf, plaster, ironwork all of which is drop dead awesome but not in a shitty Vegas way.

It's oddly organic and hides the many humans that must be somewhere in all of it's little nooks and covered patios to sip a drink or ask your person to spend the rest of their life with you.. Some have said that it's over done and too lavish - but they are poopyheads and dead wrong - it's a CASTLE and you are having the StayCation of your life. The attention to detail and warmth is completely captured and it becomes a memorable event however you wish to explore it.

And I wished to explore it by dragging my two boys, ages 4 and 10 along with me  while we battled Seaworld, The Zoo and even Legoland in 90 degree heat. It was the most perfect hotel for them as well.

There were kids running about, little dogs being walked an amazing salt water pool with underwater music. We had room service each and every breakfast and dinner in front of a fire pit outside of our ground floor room.. Glamping in the most civilized way.

The hotel has something called The Explorer's club which means you can drop the kids off in a lovely, although windowless (which kind of sucked) place full of games and happy, energetic college babysitters - the elusive  kind of which you have always wanted to find where you live. We had the mixed bag of opportunity by coming to The Grand Mar just after their busy summer season: less people, better room choice and a Pay 2 nights get the 3rd for free; alternatively, we also got crummy hours for The Explorer's Club.. 9-5. Which makes zero sense to me since most parents will run around playing at all that San Diego offers (all of which are under 1/2 an hour drive) then wish for a fancy dinner without fried kids from, say 6-8.. The kids can play with some new stuff and a happy, relaxed babysitter while mom and dad enjoy a sumptuous, uninterrupted dinner and maybe had a chance for some sexy alone time in their empty room; all meeting up for a relaxed sleeptime. But no the hotel during the week closes this Saving Grace at a hideous 5pm. But open til 10 during the weekends.  During this mid week visit it was as if we had the place to ourselves and that must be playing into this review and our experience.

Before I hang up, I have to talk a little about the service - and the croissants. The croissants, "baked upstairs" by some angel of a pastry chef are the best I've ever had and I've had them in Paris. They are BEYOND and an absolute must. I brought my own Nutella and only smeared once never wanting to blur the perfect crust and taste of their naked, flakey selves again.

The staff is absolutely beyond. KInd, efficient. The room cleaners were Cinderellas and the women who come by to turn down the beds and hand over chocolate covered oreos were divine. In Room dining was another hit with wonderful prepared and perfectly cooked food every single time.

I must tell you that the teaming of Adam and Abukar at reception is what made this trip even more outrageously perfect for us. These two are the Cirque de Soleil performing team of hotel care. One could make a hospitality video of these two swinging from the chandeliers making your stay applause and gasp worthy for any hotel to try and emulate in their corporate arsenal. They can teach much to the dozens of hotels I've been to. Humans are what ultimately make our experiences stand out one way or the other - and this was precisely the right way..

When we come back I will move our schedule around to be sure that I may see Adam and Abukar during our visit. Unless they work on weekends - which I think I'll always avoid just in case the possibility of many humans, wait times, slower in room service or employee stress ruins the taste I have in my mouth as I teary eyed drive away from this place and both boys begging me to stay one more night.

Horrible service at the Spa ! Manager at the spa is very condescending and provided no resolutions to our concerns! As a local San Diego resident I called out of the blue to check availability and was excited to find out that they could accommodate for both a facial and massage on such short notice so I booked a facial and massage for a mid day escape only to find out UPON arrival that they had committed the services to someone else !  The spa manager stated that they didn't reserve it since there was no credit card on file (a credit card that was never requested at booking and would have been provided with no hesitation ) This spa was very inconsiderate of my time and I would be cautious when scheduling ! spa manager Brooke refused to provide me with her contact information and stated she only would take down my information ! I requested to speak to a resort manager and also was unable to obtain any direct contact information and had to leave a message with the front desk . As a local born and raised San Diego resident I was appalled at the service received in my short experience at Grand Del Mar Resort & Spa ! Never again will I support  this resort if you are looking for a great place stick to L'Auberge you will receive consistent stellar customer service and a better experience

When you want to spend a chunk of your life's savings on a day of pampering, the Spa at Grand Del Mar is the place to do it.  Might as well live it up while we're here, right?  From the moment you drive through the lush and gorgeously landscaped winding road up to the entrance, and as you pass by the unbelievably beautiful villas where the super rich stay on their getaways to Grand Del Mar, you will feel like you entered a different dimension.  This stunned feeling will stay with you as you enter this rich people palace... mahogany everything, gorgeous everything, impeccably courteous and refined service everywhere you turn...

Luxury at its finest!

LOVE the assortment of delectable cookies in the ladies' lounge.  I tried one of each, and there were a lot.  Great flavors of gourmet tea, and refreshingly zippy lemon water.

LOVE how absolutely tranquil it is in here.  The sauna, steam room, and whirlpool are beautiful and clean.  The showers come with absolutely everything and more (premium shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, shaving razor, etc.), plus super duper fluffy towels.  There's a cornucopia of bathroom products on the counter too (hair sprays galore, and nice hair dryer).

I'm basically in love with this place.  Pamper yourself and make any day a special occasion.

Surround yourself with the fancier things in life... even if just for a day at this slice of heaven in Del Mar.

A favorite getaway three years running -- gorgeous grounds are meticulously maintained, rooms and hotel itself beautifully appointed, lots of amenities (including four pools, one of which is for adults only). The property is vast and sits on a golf course, tucked into the hills. The food at Amaya is consistently good and the service throughout the Grand Del Mar is gracious and attentive. (We know many love the restaurant Addison, but we found it overrated.) It's a self-contained paradise but there are a lot of great attractions nearby, including Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla and the charming town of Del Mar. Can't recommend this lovely resort highly enough. It isn't cheap but I would say a stay here is worth every penny.

My husband and I just got back from a weekend at the Grand Del Mar. We were celebrating our 10th Anniversary. It is true what everyone says, the property is very beautiful and has lots of opulent details. This hotel was built inside a canyon and has lots of gardens, manicured lawns and fountains. Again, beautiful. The service overall was good. But, to be honest I expect at least "good" when you are paying $500/night. We arrived Friday afternoon and our room was ready early. We were shown to our room and the the bellman was great (Shane). The rooms are spacious (we had a king with garden view on the first floor) and beautifully appointed. Loved the complimentary Nespresso machine. Although the shower leaked like crazy onto the bathroom floor and didn't drain well. Anyway, after getting settled we decided to grab a drink in the bar directly off the main entrance. It was good, $15 per drink. We also enjoyed a flatbread that took a really long time to get, but we weren't in a hurry, so it didn't matter. The bartenders were pleasant, the drinks were good. After that, we toured the grounds and checked out the "quiet pool" (no kids, no cell phones). It was located outside the spa/fitness center and seemed fine. Nothing too fancy about it. We also noticed a separate gym area that had spin bikes inside, but no classes were offered during our time there. Bummer. After we walked around a bit and checked out the onsite restaurant we decided to just stay in and watch a movie. We ordered room service. It came promptly and the server was nice as could be. The food the was totally average. We got the Turkey burger, Tortilla soup and Cobb salad. Nothing to brag about there. The next morning my husband went and got coffee and breakfast to bring back to the room at the coffee shop. It had your typical offerings: fruit cup, muffins, oatmeal, etc. We shared a fruit cup (good), blueberry muffin (tasty) and oatmeal (uneatable). The coffee was good. After that we called the concierge to find out about any hiking/running trails. They told us about a 41/2 mile trail that started at the entrance of the property. We ran the trail and noticed some of the signs were vague and hard to follow (but, not enough to get lost). We ended up back at the hotel a totally different way than where we started. Anyway, after that we decide to hit the family friendly pool b/c it seemed a little more lively with a bar and music. We had drinks at the pool and lunch. Fish tacos were great. Watermelon Margarita was awesome. The chips (multi colored green and red that you would find at chain mexican restaurant) and fiesta salad were average. The pool boys were busy, but very nice. It took awhile to get our check, but other than that the service was good. That night we decided to go into town for dinner as we weren't impressed with the food at the hotel even though they offer a fancy restaurant a couple blocks off property (we didn't try the food there). I called the concierge to see if the complimentary car service was available for dinner. It was not.  I then asked her if she could recommend a restaurant for dinner as it was our anniversary. She recommended Pacifica in Del Mar. We have been there before and it was nice with a great view. She also recommended Il Fornaio (a chain italian restaurant). We actually did a quick search of the area ourselves and ended up making a reservation at PrepKitchen. It is a great local restaurant and perfect for us. Anyway, we left before check out time the next day.

Overall, this is a nice, quiet getaway spot. My husband and I are pretty easy to please, but do have high expectations when paying such a premium. We have been lucky enough to stay at a number of high class 5 star resorts and unfortunately this one didn't measure up for us (but admittedly, maybe we chose poorly for our taste). We realized that we prefer to be coastal (and have options for recreation) and there are several amazing spots for the ocean views. If you are going to spend the money on 5 stars, I would stay at any of the following before The Grand Del Mar:

Terranea, Palos Verdes/LA
St. Regis, Dana Point
Ritz Carlton, Dana Point
Montage, Laguna Beach

All of the above are oceanfront. Hope this was helpful. :)

The hotel is over the top. Marble everything. Reds and gold with rich woods. Everyone was so friendly from the minute I arrived at the entry gate to the moment I checked out and valet brought my car. everything is so detailed I am not sure how they pull it off but I will definitely be back and I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who like lavish things and exquisite service

I can't believe I have never reviewed this place...just went there for the third or fourth time.  Very rarely do you find a hotel that is soooo amazing.  Beautiful grounds, lobby is unreal, service top notch, very peaceful, rooms are the best you will find anywhere....food is exceptional, great pools, kids programs (and babysitting), top notch gym and spa...golf if you're into that, private adult pool and spa....where do I stop.  Just go..prices aren't cheap but it's the best hotel in SD and one of the best I have ever been to anywhere in the world. Think of Venice, France, and SoCal all rolled up into one amazing experience.

I went to a wedding at the Grand Del Mar, and it was so MAGICAL! If you want to blow your guests away.. this is the place to book your wedding!

Everything about this place is very glamorous, it has that old world 1920s feel to it! Unlike other hotels that have plain walls, the walls in the ballroom were decorated.
The rooms are so amazing as well. It would make a perfect background for pictures too! There is a large pond and an intricate gazebo on the site too!

The couple had the chapel ceremony and their reception was in the Elizabeth Ballroom. The room was beautiful and the stage was nice but I was surprised how small the dance floor was.

The staff was so wonderful! And I would really love to come back here for a spa day.

Overall this is a fabulous place to have your wedding if you can afford it. ;p

Fabulous. I typically write long reviews but honestly it would be redundant. Basically, it's what everyone else has already described. A five star hotel that actually deserves its rating.

Went as a family for spring break vacation April 2014 with our two older children. Staff phenomenal, concierge team very helpful, grounds exquisite, resort is large enough to offer first-class amenities but not so large you can't easily get from your room to any other part of the resort in a very short walk, rooms spacious and well appointed, peaceful but not too stuffy, family pool fabulous and luxurious (even with children there), food excellent in all restaurants, spa where I got a massage was absolutely lovely. Ate a spectacular 9 course meal (actually it felt like 20 courses) at Addison - left in a food coma. Very expensive but a special treat and well worth it as a dinner "event". Hotel stay is expensive but worth it even if you're not a golfer or tennis player. We mostly lounged, relaxed and ate.

I have to admit, my wife and I do not regularly stay in Five-Star establishments.  Whatever you imagine that to be like The Grand Del Mar is that and more.  I really cannot think of anything bad to say about our stay.

You are going to pay a premium to stay here (or any resort).  For us, it was money well spent  and we had the vacation of a lifetime.

I made my reservation online.  After receiving the confirmation, I also got an email from the concierge.  This started a thread of messages that lead to every activity and request I had for my trip being noted and planned (they even ask your shoe size for the slippers in your room and the spa).

Check-in was painless.  They treated me like a valued guest from the moment the valet opened the door to my car.  He took the bag and walked us to registration.  The woman at registration was blindingly efficient with the business portion of our transaction and careful and thorough when reviewing our activities and preferences.

After asking if she could help in any other way, we were shown to our room.  Many times website photos of hotel rooms give you the impression that the rooms are larger and nicer  than they are.  This is not the case at The Grand Del Mar.  Important tip: get a Terrace Guest Room. You won't regret it.

Everything about your stay will be personal.  Each staff member we met asked about our stay, our activities, and if they could assist in anyway.  Unlike customer service at many places, when these people offer to help they mean it.  If the person you ask cannot handle your request, the person who can will appear instantly! Here are a couple of examples of the personal service and attention to detail we received.

Upon our arrival we requested a bucket of ice.  The second night we requested a bucket of ice which they brought up to us.  For the remainder of our stay a bucket of ice was placed in the room each evening, without a request.  Like everyone, we leave the charging cables for electronics laying about in our room.  Each time housekeeping came through they would wrap up each cable and tie it with a ribbon.  Seriously, a ribbon (I have pictures).

We did not eat in every restaurant but we can personally recommend Amaya and Club M.  Consult Yelp for restaurants off the property.

Our trip really was perfect and I know part of that is luck.  However, I feel compelled to address one of the negative reviews I saw. A woman wrote that the staff did not offer to hold her luggage or offer her a refreshment until her room was ready.  I am surprised by this.  Our luggage was taken by the valet and bellman immediately when we exited our vehicle.  Our entire stay, they handled everything, from nightly ice buckets to - of course- our luggage.  As soon as we walked to the registration desk, the clerk asked us if we wanted some water (plain or with lemon slices) that was on a table nearby, and when you turn 90 degrees from the registration desk, there is a lobby offering every refreshment from water to liquor.  So I am not quite sure what to make of that reviewer's situation.

I don't know much about spa activities but I enjoyed my massage and manicure (my first one). I cannot comment on pool service because we did not use it.  All the reservations through the concierge were exactly as requested.  I used this trip as an opportunity to try some things I had never done before. Second tip: they have a car service to get you around but it helps to reserve with that early.  I know it will not seem like it when they serve you, but there are other guests also requesting the car service.

Final tip: if you plan to have both a massage and a surfing lesson during your trip, schedule the massage after the surfing lesson, not the other way around.

As I said at the beginning, this was a dream trip.

My sweet husband booked a weekend staycation to celebrate my birthday here recently. From the moment we checked in to the minute we checked out, the service was incredible. I suppose you expect a certain level of service from 5-star resorts, but a lot of times there is also a little bit of pretentiousness that comes along with it, especially when you look younger than you really are. Thankfully, we didn't experience any of that during our stay. Everyone, from the front desk, to the bellhop, to the housekeeping staff was friendly, polite, and helpful. We had our dog with us and she was treated like a first class guest too! They require guests with dogs to book a room on the first floor so that you can easily access the lawn area from your room. It was so convenient for us to let our dog out to run around and do her business directly from our room. They also provided her with dog bowls (and two bottles of water!) and a doggie bed.

The resort itself is just beautiful and so elegantly appointed from the rooms to common areas. We enjoyed room service, a casual dinner at Amaya one evening and a more formal dinner at Addison another evening. We enjoyed massages at the spa as well. The spa is not as big as ones you'd find in Vegas, but it was very nice. There is a jacuzzi tub, steam room, sauna, showers, bathrooms, lockers, relaxation room, and outdoor patio area.

I never thought I would enjoy a staycation as much as we did here. It really felt like we were on a vacation miles away from home when we were only 15 minutes away. It has completely changed my thoughts on staycations and I hope we get a chance to come back here again!

The Grand Del Mar is by far one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed.

It's perfect from head to toe....You feel like you have stepped into a European dream vacation without the flight!  Opulent decor , impeccable service, delicious food and beautiful spa.   The tennis court and pro are absolutely amazing.  Equestrian center, hike paths and beautifully kept grounds.

I recommend it for a romantic get-away, my five and six year old did not have too much to do except go swimming although they have a kids club.

Beautiful grounds, immaculately decorated, European flare. Hallways featured family photos and artfully crafted public spaces.  Dined in a private, ornate, marbled floor, bricked wall, chandelier-ed ceiling, warmly lit room.

Food Reviews:

Chicken Satay with Roasted Garlic Skewers-
Dynamic flavors and an amalgamation of soft and crispy textures. Tasty. Delicious.

Duck Leg Confit Ragout Winter Apples, Baby Frisee, Cranberry Vinaigrette-
Subtle flavors. A mix of savory duck, hint of fruitful sweetness, moist, tender, non-assuming. Delicious.

Slow-Roasted Smoked Beef Tenderloin, Sauteed Rainbow Chard-
Lightly seasoned, medium rare, tender, flavorful, the right amount of fat to make this flavor-fully delicious. On some portions of the meat there was a bone-marrow, lip-smacking, finger-licking flavor.  The textures had a tender center and sometimes a slightly crispy edge. This may be one of my favorite places to get this cut of meat. delicious.

Veggies and Fruit. Since I have food allergies, I ate some iceberg lettuce without dressing. Interestingly, the lettuce was slightly sweet and nice to snack on. This was mentionable, because the fruit was really delicious as well. As a person allergic to dairy, I frequently (and sadly) get substituted fruit for dessert while everyone else enjoys creme brulee, I had to mention that this one was of the best fruit at a hotel I have ever had. Since I eat a lot of fruit in my daily life, I don't care to buy fruit when I eat out. So I had to mention that this was actually a good treat.

Husband ranked the creme brulee as the best he's had in his life.

Overall, the chef clearly pays a great deal of attention to his/her ingredients, flavors, and the preparation and art of his/her craft. Same could be said about the planners and designers of this hotel and the grounds.

Allergen Report: Very slightly allergic.
Customer Service: Excellent.
Ambiance and Overall Experience: Impeccable

Would return. Five Star Experience.

I Stayed at The Grand Del Mar in San Diego, CA

This is one of the nicest, most peaceful hotels that I have ever stayed at - especially considering that the hotel is not a destination resort away from the city...its only 10 minutes from La Jolla and not to distant to the airport and downtown San Diego.

The rooms are super nicely decorated.  They have all the typical amenities of a 5 star hotel, plus double sinks in the huge bathrooms(separate shower/bath) and very nice sitting areas with corner sofas.

Our room had a very nice balcony with a super nice view to the golf fairway and to the back portion of the hotel were the larger fountain is found.

The service and attention were all first class.

Being a three story hotel with a smaller lobby, the feeling is more of an intimate European boutique hotel, and not one of those monster resorts...

Tea time was nice, the piano player on Saturday night was a joy, and room service was pretty good - albeit expensive as to be expected!

The pool area and the Gym are first class.

I highly recommend this hotel - I do wish it was on the beach - but its hard to have it all!

This is one of the best resort I've ever stayed in, period....
1.  Hotel is immaculate, you feel like you're in Europe, but not a ruins, when it's in glory days.  Ceilings, floors, hallways, marbles everywhere....
2.  The room is just as spectacular, gold theme everywhere, marbles, first class amenities....  You will feel like you live in a castle in Italy....  Especially I got upgraded by front desk when we checked in.  Thanks Abukar....
3.  The grounds,  statues everywhere, beautiful grounds....  Swimming pool with clear blue water,  one of them heated, even when it's cold outside, you'll be swimming comfortably....  For those of you that golf....  Beautiful golf course....  Although I don't we live in Pebble Beach, I know what I'm talking about.
4.  The best of all, best service I've ever experienced.  These guys anticipate what you need, I don't even have to ask.  The cleaning lady saw us with 2 small kids, she called to ask for small robes and slippers for them.  The guys in the swimming pool, follow up to where we go and get us some towels and then later gave us some ice waters....  Very attentive....  I'll definitely will come back....

We stayed at the Grand Del Mar for a celebratory weekend. We found the hotel on Trip Advisor, which listed it as the number 1 hotel in the US. We've stayed in some pretty amazing resorts so had high expectations going into our weekend.

The good:
Well appointed rooms with excellent bedding. Our room had a private patio that opened up into a courtyard with fountain. We had breakfast in our robes on the patio every morning. The room also had a huge soaking tub with room for two, and great towels and toiletries. The adults only pool was quiet and relaxing, and the drinks were awesome. The resort is sprawling and beautiful, very tranquil.

The bad:
When we checked in, we asked about dinner reservations at their 5 star restaurant. The guy at the desk said he would check into it for us. After getting to our room and not hearing from him, we called again to find the restaurant was closed. Not a big deal but not the kind of detail you miss at the number 1 hotel in the US. We ordered room service and after eating it, moved the table to the corner of the room rather than putting it outside in the hallway. We returned to our room later that day to find it clean with fresh towels.... and the room service cart still sitting there with 8 hour old lox. Not a great smell and again, not the kind of detail you miss at a hotel like this. Finally, we decided to eat in our room the last night and after reviewing the menu, called room service. We were informed that none of the items we wanted were available because the restaurant was undergoing renovations. That's understandable but why not replace all of the menus in the rooms during this process, or give guests a modified menu at check in? For guests to spend 15 minutes deciding what they want off a menu, only to be told none of it is available, is not 5 star service. We ended up walking down to their other restaurant, which also had a modified menu because of the renovation. After seeing the menu was limited, we finally opted to just eat off site. The bell desk provided transportation to a local restaurant (very nice of them) but this was a last resort for us as we really just wanted to eat in the room.

Overall, it's a very classy and upscale setting and has beautiful grounds. The rooms are luxurious and what you would expect from a resort of this caliber. Unfortunately, they are missing on service and this is nowhere near what you get at a Four Seasons or Ritz.

Wonderful hotel. We've been here a couple of times. The service is always exemplary.

This place is quiet. The configuration of the rooms lends itself nicely to that.

What's more, the Grand Del Mar is home to Addison, one of the very few five-star restaurants in California. We had a decadent 8-course meal during our last visit. We needed a wheelbarrow to roll us out of there. The French cuisine was amazing. And the entire wait staff was spectacular. I think the four of us spent about $1200 at dinner. That's without alcohol.

If you ever get the chance to stay at the Grand Del Mar, be sure to hit up Addison as well. You will not be disappointed.

I do love this place. I love hanging at the pool when it is not too busy. The service is great. The food and drinks overpriced but that's to be expected right?? They set you up in you chair, towels and all and are very kind.
The bar is great and the views are amazing. So lush and green. I stick to the big people pool area. Too many kids and noise in the other one. They jaccuzzi is usually empty and quiet. The rooms are nice and expensive but a great place to take the family. I don't stay because I have friends that live there so I roll over there often for cocktails in the lounge, have breakfast or lunch or take a meeting there. They have great lunches and salads, and Bloody Mary's. Club M can be fun I guess if you are in the mood. It's kind of become a stranger older crowd and not really local anymore so I really stay away from it. It's ok if you really feel the need to dance. Not a lot of choices over here in Nor. Co. Great resort.

Resort grounds are amazingly beautiful.. The public rooms in the hotel main floor are as well.  The room itself I didn't flip over (a bit too over the top with gold and all for me), but the balcony is lovely!  Great bathroom and the easiest to use little coffee maker with actually GOOD coffee.
Do not miss the breakfast on the patio.  Best breakfast in the most beautiful surroundings and excellent service.
Man is this place pricey (and then CA taxes on top of it), but it was worth it to experience once.

Spa was small but wonderful.  I had the whole spa to myself on a Monday!  I am not sure I would have liked it as much otherwise.  They do have a nice outdoor deck you could lie out on.   Elaine was the spa attendant and she treated me like a princess all day...she was the most amazing spa attendant on the planet.  I would go back just for that!

I can't even think of one negative thing to say about The Grand Del Mar. It was first class treatment from the second we arrived all without an air of pretentiousness...hmm, or wait, maybe we are pretentious.....NAAA!!!

We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and Michelle greeted us at the counter and showed us the way to our room. She was wonderful and we saw her many other times throughout our stay and always enjoyed chatting with her.

Upon arrival we saw we had a voicemail. We called and they said they had an "amenity" for us and could they bring it?

We were completely surprised when Jose wheeled in a table with sparking wine and chocolate covered strawberries with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate!

They send you a personal email after you make your reservation asking if you are celebrating anything special. I emailed that we really weren't but that we never got to go away for our 10th anniversary so this was kind of like a little anniversary trip. I never expected this!

Jose was wonderful as well. Very polite and interactive. We were watching the Brazil v Spain soccer game when he came in so we talked a bit about the game with him.

The grounds are beautiful!! The husband and I went on a 7 mile run going up past Addison and running through the homes up there before we hit Shaw and the Equestrian  trails. It was a gorgeous run and when we got back they were quick to get us water.

I could go on and on, but I will just say it's wonderful. I hear they have a great kids program. I was surprised to see as many kids as we did, so we might return again with our kids in tow.

This resort is nothing short of spectacular. The customer service is wonderful and the property is breathtakingly beautiful. Each time we're in San Diego, we always try to stop by or stay here.

The rooms are so pretty at The Grand. Each room is decorated with beautiful colonial furniture and has big comfortable beds. We really enjoy sitting at our room's lovely balcony or patio. Whenever we're here, we're always ready for some serious rest and relaxation.

The property is vast with beautiful pools and fountains. Although we haven't had a chance to check out all the hiking trails, we always spend a good deal of time walking around this amazing resort, enjoying the sights.

One of highlights of our visits is the chance is to walk down to the equestrian center. My son loves seeing those beautiful horses. There is plenty of other fun things for kids to do at the resort, and the Explorers' Club has fun games and crafts to keep the kids occupied on visits here.

There are some great stores at The Grand. My son likes getting gelato and cookies at Cent' Anni, and I really like shopping at the resort's the little clothing boutique, called The Collection. The restaurants are great here as well.

The customer service is wonderful here. From valet to in-room dining, everyone is so patient and kind. The staff seems to go the extra mile in everything they do.

We never seem to have enough time when we visit here, and we always look forward to coming back soon. The property and customer service are truly wonderful, and we really appreciate how the staff always makes our visits so memorable!

Stayed there 2 nights. They literally ransacked our car. Parts inside were thrown around, and there were 2  pairs of expensive sunglasses missing. These guys are THIEVES. Watch out and use their valet at your own risk!

I have valet parked my Lamborghini's, Aston Martin, Mclaren, etc all over the top resorts like Pelican Hill, etc. Never have I had valet's literally ransack my car.

WOW! Is this place amazing. From the moment you walk in you feel like you're in a huge castle. It's so beautiful, I have never seen so much green in a long time. The hotel has a very European, nice and elegant look. I came here because I read on their website that they have tea time on Saturday's and Sunday's by appointments only. As you can tell from my reviews, I love tea time so this was music to my ears. They have amazing tea selections. I had their BOMBAY CHAI and the WHITE AMBROSIA. Along with their tea, they have amazing dessert pairings. This is a must for tea time in San Diego! It really takes you back and makes you feel like you're in Europe, which I can compare to since I have had the pleasure of enjoying tea time there.

Work Del Mar, vacation at Del mar. Wish my workplace was as luxurious as the Grand Del Mar! Wonderful 5 star service and hotel. When we checked in, the lady even escorted us all the way to the elevators. If we wanted to, she could've walked us all the way to our room too.

The room was amazing. Bathroom was all marble, where the closet was located. There was an opening above the bathtub that overlooked the bedroom. Kids had fun climbing in and out of it. We were on the first floor so we had access to the garden.

We still didnt let the cold weather keep us from the pool. Pool was heated and they had poolside service. Pool area overlooked golf course. Our server was Aaron and he went above and beyond. Besides the normal drinks and food,  he came out and gave us bathrobes. Hubby wanted to play tennis and Aaron went to check if courts were availlable and brought us the tennis rackets.

I checked out their spa and had a Swedish massage. It was nice that all their toiletries were all packaged individually and never recycled. Unlike most places where combs are disinfected in some solution after use. They had a steam room, sauna, and Jacuzzi. Fitness room well equipped. Made me want to hurry up and work out to try their equipment.

Ate at the Amaya outdoors and enjoyed the view of courtyard. Today's last day of our visit and we have yet to check out their stables.

It truly  was a  grand experience!

I was surprised at how new the hotel actually is, it has such a haunted/old feeling to it.
It has a great layout, spread in and outdoor. Perfect for the sunny San Diego area.
