This hotel is not close to much of anything in walking distance but the staff is nice and the place is very well cared for.  prices are good to average for the area.  if you call a cab they send a sedan for the same price.  nice touch.

My parents always stay at this Holiday Inn Express when they're in town. It's tucked away up the street and around the corner from the popular Holiday Inn Sea World, but still seems to host a high number of guests at any given time of the week or season.

As far as Holiday Inns go -- and, in particular, those of the Express variety -- this hotel is a hidden gem. The rooms are spacious, with a couch, coffee table, desk, refrigerator, and microwave included. The hotel also has free wifi and a comfortable lounge area downstairs, where they now serve free hot breakfast every morning. (Eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, and baked items included, as well as a variety of juices, coffee, tea, yogurt, cereal... All included in the price of your stay!) The staff, too, are incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful. They manage to foster a wonderful small hotel feel under the big hotel chain name, an accomplishment that is seldom achieved at most hotels these days, especially those in popular tourist cities like San Diego.

Highly recommended!

Loved my experience at this hotel.  The hotel rooms were clean and newly renovated.  The "free" breakfast was good too.  I was very hesitate about it before going there but was very impressed.  Would stay  here if I come down to San Diego again.  It was a little misleading if you don't pay attention to where you are going.  The staff was great and very helpful.  The only hiccup we had were the free wi-fi.  We stayed on the 3rd floor and could not connect to the wi-fi at times.  We called and were told they had a new service but still could not use the wi-fi.  Only one of our laptop was working and the connection was slow a bit.

This hotel saved us from a nightmare of a stay at a Howard Johnson nearby, and I called their corporate office to let them know just how happy I am with this hotel.  Here's the breakdown:
1. Despite the renovation of the downstairs lobby, place is clean.
2. Newly renovated hotel = pretty rooms that are spotless.  Our room is beautiful, very clean (checked all sheets, towels, floors, bathtub and toilet, microwave and fridge, as well as dust on back of furniture, which there was no problems AT ALL).
3. HUGE fridge in the room makes for great storage for our drinks and ice.
4. Microwave in the room is clean and big enough to reheat anything.
5. Despite the a/c looking old (it is old), it is SUPER cold so I have no qualms with that.
6. I'm currently writing this review using the hotel's hi speed internet service, which is f*ing fast.  I'm very pleased.
7. Parking underneath the hotel means better security and the elevator is right there when you park.  Also, they close the doors at night and you need a room key to get back in to the hotel from the parking garage.  I like that a lot.
8. Pool is a nice size and clean.

Overall, for 119/night to be literally across the freeway from Sea world (our destination) is very reasonable and worth every penny.  To top everything off, their free breakfast is a FULL breakfast -- sausage, bacon, bread, everything you want.  It's AWESOME.

PS: Don't use tripadvisor for tips.  That site gave the howard johnson i came from 4.5 stars.  Bullsh*t.

The close proximity to Sea World is ideal. The location seems shady but the inside and service more than makes up for it. The lobby is beautiful. Very nice and helpful front desk. We had the family suite w/2 queens and a sofa sleeper. Huge room!  Softest pillow cases of any hotel. Modern room and decor.  The free parking, wifi and breakfast add tons of value; most hotels around Sea World charge about $20 per day just for parking.  The free breakfast included: a pancake maker, cereal, instant oatmeal packets, bananas, warm cinnamon rolls, yogurt, eggs, bacon, english muffins, coffee, juice, blueberry muffins, etc.  The eggs seemed powdered and artificial, and the orange juice was like Sunny D, which I hate, so I wish they would change these two things but otherwise a great breakfast.  This hotel is only a few minutes from restaurants - Chili's, Red Lobster, fast food.

Highly recommend this hotel if you have a car. Best kept secret! This was my first stay in Holiday Inn Express and I was very impressed. The location is close to everything, super easy access to freeway. Less than 5 min to Sea world or beach and about a bit less than 10 min to downtown. It may not be the best looking area, but there are a lot of businesses, strip malls, abundance of restraurants. I chose this hotel because of the proximity to all the action, free parking/breakfast (this is very rare nowdays) and updated rooms. Rooms are beautiful, spacious, very modern with dark colors (the picture posted here is dated). Equipped with nice furniture, refrigerator, microwave and AC/heater. TV was a tube one but it's ok, I didn't go to San Diego to watch TV. Beds were very comfortable with clean sheets. Spacious bathroom as well, with good water pressure.  It may be a small hotel but has all the convenience such as coin-op laundry and a computer with a printer at the lobby. Staff is very nice and welcoming. They cook fresh breakfast every morning; hot food such as eggs & bacon/sausage and cold items like cereals, baked goods, fruits, yogurt, juices were available as well. The line can get long and the scene can become quite chaotic (staff was very patient though) if you get there late so I suggest you go down early for breakfast.  Oh did I mention you get free wireless internet in your room??? This hotel is perfect!!!  All of this for much much less! I am definitely staying here again.

Tip: If you miss pancakes for the breakfast, there is a restaurant called Du-par within couple blocks - they have good (& huge) pancakes and open 24/7.
Also, if you like Pho, try Pho Point Loma & Grill on Midway Dr, also a quick drive from hotel. Best pho I had!

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel this past week.  The rooms are updated, very clean and spacious.  The location of the hotel was great: it was very close to Seaworld, Old Town, Downtown, beaches etc.  The breakfast area was always well-stocked and the staff was friendly.  If we visit SD again, we'll definitely stay at this hotel.  Also, there are no parking fees here unlike most other hotels in SD.

Hotel is very clean and quiet. Bathroom seemed updated with nice big counter tops and very good water pressure in shower. The staff was SO friendly, and even let us eat breakfast even though we didn't make it down until about 30 minutes after they "stop serving". The hot food wasn't hot, but the yogurt, cereal, and breads were just fine. Good coffee too.

The neighborhood is a little sketchy, but you'd never know it when you're in the hotel. I accidentally left my keys IN my car, IN the ignition, with the doors UNLOCKED (d'oh) overnight while parked in the parking garage, and the car and all its contents were still there in the morning. (Phew!) So I guess the neighborhood could have been a lot worse.

I gave this hotel a 2 star because of the freeway noise. Ask for a room opposite the freeway, as it is LOUD. The cost of the room was not worth the noise at night when trying to sleep. The location of the hotel is central to areas in San Diego, but in a strange spot...near commercial auto body shops.

The hotel was clean. Breakfast was okay. Don't know that the cinnamon rolls are "world famous." If you eat heathly, stay away from the cinnamon rolls - they'll make you sick.

Clean, comfortable and quiet. There are a lot of people here but I rarely hear any noise.

I was originally at Ramada Inn and was not happy, so I was able to get into the Holiday Inn Express. Wow what a difference. I was so happy to arrive here at nice and clean hotel.

Staff is NICE unlike the Ramada Inn.

Breakfast is the standard continental breakfast but you have to get down there early to avoid the crowd.

Parking is a little tough but I have always been able to find a spot, so far. I am here for several days and I am very pleased with everything.

I want to know where hotels get their pillows.  Is there some evil factory that employs a horde of engineers, physicians and other experts who specifically design pillows that are not comfortable to anybody?  Maybe these evil pillows can actually sense what you define as "uncomfortable" and then diabolically change their shape and structure to provide you with maximum discomfort?
I find it hard to believe that out of the 8 pillows provided in my room, none of them are comfortable.  The Boy enjoys making forts out of them or piling them up and leaping WWE style into them, so they serve some purpose.
But I digress. . .
I love the Holiday Inn Express in San Mateo so it's a no brainer booking my room in San Diego right?
The young lady at the front desk (Alma? Alama?) is perky and pleasant and the bag of snacks for being a Priority Club member is a nice touch too but the location is horrible.  Its sandwiched between a bunch of strip clubs, taco stands and a boat builder off the back side of Sports Arena Blvd. (Note: I have nothing against strip clubs and taco stands, I've been known to frequent both but not while on vacation with The Family)
The noise factor is pretty high.  Not to mention that the comfort level was suffering because the heater/air conditioner had its parameters restricted  to the "not comfortable at all" range necessitated me opening the window, bringing me back the aforementioned "Noise Factor"  Sports Arena Blvd is pretty busy at night.  Especially on Saturday nights.  The 2 am serenade by the drunk in the alley was a nice touch too.
Other than that, the room was pretty standard Holliday Inn Express.  Nicer than Motel 6 and the iron isn't cabled to the wall.  They are usually a pretty good deal for your money. The free internet access is nice too.  We had a fridge and microwave in the room and plenty of room to move around.
Aside from the Marquis De Sade Signature pillows and the noise our experience wasn't too bad.  I'll definitely check out other hotels in the area before booking here again but I'd stay here again if the only rooms left in San Diego were in National City or Imperial Beach.

The only reason I didn't give this hotel a 5 was because of the area it is in. Homeless and adult clubs and bookstores every where. Otherwise it really is a beautiful, clean and up to date hotel to stay in. The pool is really small but the staff is courteous and the breakfast is wonderful.

The service here is very consistent, I've stayed here twice and both times the staff was friendly. The location is not the best as it is nxt to the freeway and kinda hidden in between random buildings, however its no biggie. The parking there is tricky as the spots are tight even for a compact car and parking tends to fill up pretty fast as it gets later however there is street parking and they do have a security guard making the rounds. When i called down to the lobby and asked for a microwave(which are available upon request) someone was knocking on the door within minutes, they were very prompt. Even though this hotel is kinda off the beaten path with no real views the service we've receieved has been excellent and thats why i'll be back! oh and while they don't allow pets in this hotel there is a doggy boarding place right across the street from it making it super convenient to drop off ur dog and be a few steps away!

Stayed here because I had an outrigger canoe paddling race in Mission Bay to get up early for and didn't want to make a 3 hour drive from LA at 3am. It was actually an accident that I booked this particular hotel because of a mix-up with my teammate, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Any hotel in this immediate area is pretty much guaranteed not to be a AAA 5 star establishment. The area's a bit rough around the edges, but it's nothing most people can't handle. We saw mostly families staying the night to go to Sea World and the Zoo during our stay.

First off, the staff is very, very friendly. We spent a good 15 minutes trying to figure out where my teammates were staying and they were at the regular Holiday Inn down the street (now a Mission Plaza Hotel even though the signage hasn't changed, go fig) which the staff said happens all the time because they called that hotel up and found them right away.

The room was very spacious and clean. Big jetted tub, sitting area with couch, fridge, microwave. Free wi-fi to boot and we had all the conveniences of home. Only bad thing I could say about the room was the view of the back street the hotel is on with some run-down businesses and such all around...but that's nothing that the proprietors could be faulted with.

All in all, I would definitely have to say I'd stay here again. It's kinda easy to miss because it's behind some buildings/businesses off the main road, so keep your eyes peeled even if you have GPS, cuz we missed the turn the first couple of times. heh.

P E R F E C T. Breakfast was spectacular, the hotel was nice, neat and clean, and the staff was great! DOLLIE was amazing in the night shift and the security, or the filipino man that works with her at night. the cookies were BOMBACIOUS and this place was super close to Seaworld. WILL DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN!

Everything was great. I always try to stay in Holiday Inn Express hotels because of my great experiences. I was a little disappointed this time because one of the people in my group had major flight trouble and didn't get in until 8AM and they wouldn't refund the room charge. They said it was because they held her room, but I stayed there and it wasn't full at all. I understand they are a business, but come on, really. Understanding your customers is what will keep them with your company.

Pool was really small at this location.

This hotel is about as central to tourist destinations as you can get. 5-10 minutes to just about everywhere (unless there is traffic of course). Easy freeway access. Getting to it and from it may be tricky the first time if you aren't familiar with Sports Arena Blvd and the U-turns/No U-turns involved.

Clean and comfy. Nice breakfast area. Excellent place for families with kids headed to Sea World. The computer in the lobby is online quickly and there's a decent printer attached to it.

There is a smoking area out front, and an ashtray by the back door. There SHOULD be one at the bench outside the pool area - but there isn't.

## Don't be late to the parking garage! There are support posts everywhere, and the slots are small. That's fine if you are driving a Prius or Smart Car - but a real pain if you are driving a full-sized vehicle. Backing in seems to be the ticket. ##

PARKING IS FREE  - something to think about when booking a hotel in SD...it's getting harder to find.

If you are in SD and want to sample some of the local craft beers (you definitely should), but don't want to drive - you are in luck. Barons Market is just across the street (well, caddy-cornered) and has a good selection.

CVS is also across the street, which is handy when you need a memory card for your camera or some batteries and don't want to pay the prices at Sea World or Seaport Village.

PROS: Hotel always smells clean, friendly & very attentive staff (especially Mila and Jay in the breakfast area), the pool and spa were very well maintained, the breakfast had a very wide selection and good variety from day to day. Housekeeping staff did a great job in keeping the room tidy and keeping the room stocked, & the people in the front desk were always smiling. The beds were also very comfy.

CONS: In the breakfast room, they didn't have hot chocolate for the kids & the pancake machine kept on getting stuck. Given the location, next to the freeway, you can hear  noise at night if your room is overlooking it. The wifi is on the slow side & connection isn't that great. There is only one elevator that moves slowly. We also had trouble finding the hotel; there should be a larger sign out front, since those who aren't familiar wont be able to find it.

Overall, we were very satisfied with our stay, and will definitely come back & recommend Holiday Express Inn to anyone visiting San Diego.

Don't let the location fool you... this is a GREAT HOTEL for the money. Very central to almost all there is in San Diego. We were going to Sea World - and this place is right across the river (one "exit") from Sea World.

We were out for a family trip, and opted for the "suite" room - with a 2 burner electric stove, fridge, all utensils, and dining area. There is also a small TV (living room type) area. Perfect for the family that doesn't want to go out every night. While you can not cook a full 4 course meal, after a long day being a tourist - sometimes a quick mac and cheese hits the spot.

And, if you don't want to make morning breakfast - it is included! Excellent for the family looking to fill up before a long tourist day.

TIP: Try and get a room facing AWAY from the busy street, while not overly noisy - the occasional horn honk will get on your nerves.

TIP: Parking is free, but fills up fast. There is a nighttime security guard that patrols if you do need to park on the street.

We spent the day at Sea World and didn't have any where to stay.  We've been using Holiday day Inn Express for a couple years now since the quality has been consistent across country and over the Atlantic.

I called from Sea World and the receptionist was ready to book me over the phone.  I didn't book it yet since I wanted to see it first. The hotel is surrounded by unappealing businesses but once you enter the lobby it was like a diamond in the rough.  We were assisted quickly and given whatever discounts applied to us (e.g. AAA).

When we got to the room, it was a sight for sore eyes after a long drive and walking all day at Sea World.  The room was spacious and CLEAN!! There was WiFi and a great morning breakfast buffet all for FREE!!!!

We didn't use the pool but it looked small as we past it.  We went out for dinner and came back to see there was no parking available.  Many large SUVs take 2 of their spaces since they're so small.  We had to park on the street.

We're determined to use Holiday Inn Express all the time even if it's $10 to $20 more than the competition.  The quality and comfort is worth the difference.

Luz was the person I spoke with most of the time throughout my stay and she was a pleasure! She was funny, informative and had a very positive attitude. The rest of the staff was sociable and kind. If you have to sleep during the day request a room on the opposite end of the doggy day care across the street because you hear a bit of barking when you don't have the tv on, but I didn't mind it one bit! LOVE!!! Would 100% recommend and return.
The bus stops across the street were also very convenient. (15 minutes to Ocean Beach!)

Stayed overnight on a visit to Sea World.  Hotel in a "different" location, but very convenient to Sea World...Looks as though they may have remodeled recently.  Room size is okay, they have free wi-fi, the bathroom was medium sized (and the door opens out into the room-a bonus in hotels where the bathroom space is limited), very clean, and breakfast was good considering it was complimentary (had hot and cold items).  The area to eat was tight, but you could always take it to your room.  The only negative that I have, is that the parking spaces are tight!  They all seem like they are for compact cars only, and even then, it's a squeeze.  But, parking is free....Did not use the pool, but it was tiny, and that wasn't the kind of vacation we were there for.

Overall, very happy with our stay.

Pros: clean hotel/rooms, comfy beds and pillows, provides decent hot breakfast buffet, and parking provided. Con: very sketchy surrounding neighborhood, thin walls and can hear other people in hallways or outside, near airport so lots of planes flying over. Overall, I'd stay here again if ever in San Diego. It's not too far from downtown area.

This place is the bomb! In a perfect location. All major attractions are minutes away. Great restaurants in the area, try phils bbq which is a 5 minute walk away. Yelp it. Are 5 year old enjoyed the breakfast so much that when dinner time came she insisted we eat at the hotel. We laughed and had to explain to her that they only had breakfast.

We stayed here last year for two nights.   I know parking is hard to come by but parking in their underground garage was near impossible!  Don't even bother trying during peak season. Staff was friendly but, for the prices, we could have stayed at a much better location.

PROS:  This hotel is in a very convenient location just across the water from Sea World.  There is an I-8 onramp right there, so it is easy to get around San Diego.  There is a shopping center across the street with a bank, grocery, pharmacy, coffee shop, fast food, etc.  Our room was very clean and the bathroom had a spacious countertop.  The beds were comfortable.  The A/C worked well.  The decor seemed freshly updated.
CONS:  The free parking is very tight and inadequate for the number of guests.   Beware of the many columns you're likely to scrape your car up against. Some people hog more than one space in the garage, so if you arrive late, you may have to park on the street.  The breakfast area is very busy in the morning and the food is just so-so.  This is a family-oriented hotel with lots of kids - so be prepared for some noise.  There is only one small elevator for both guests and staff.  In our room, the clothes closet was very small.  We had a few ants in our room.  Although it was clean, the room smelled slightly dank.  There was a mini-fridge in the room, but it wasn't very cold.
NEUTRAL:  Another poster mentioned that you have to make some U-turns because of the divided highway.  There is a pool, but it's small and just 4 feet deep.

not really great, we got here at 9pm they charged my credit car $220  which i though it was a lot for a tiny room
and they were knoking on the door at 9am to kick us out when the time was at 12pm.

i think the only great thing was that they had the bible god's holy word that saved my life.

Do not be fooled by the sketchy surroundings.  The contemporary interiors will make you forget the outside.  The rooms are spacious and comfortable.  Please note there is a cooler, not a refrigerator, underneath the TV.  We stayed two nights and did not have major problems.

If you drive a big car, you may have to take two spaces.  The garage has very linear and the spaces are compact.  Get back early if you want a good space.  Next to the garage is a small pool and hot tub. Bring your bathing suit!

Don't stay out too late.  Fireworks from Seaworld can be seen from the hotel room! Sweet! :)

They give you the bill the morning you check out.  My mom noticed we were over charged from the deal she paid online.  She went downstairs and they nicely removed a portion of the payment.  A man who also stayed complained about the 'refridgerator' the lady at the desk could not give him a discount because she already gave him $10 off of his first compliant.

If you are looking for a quick and affordable stay, this is the place for you.

Oh, I forgot to mention they serve breakfast downstairs.  Don't forget to eat a cookie from the lobby ;)

This place is very neat, and nicely kept.
Karen was so nice to us helping us always well.
Without Karen, this place wouldn't be as good.

I like the breakfast (hot as well), and cookies all day long.
The rooms overall are spacious, and clean. Rossario is the sweetest breakfast lady, and housekeeper.

However, be careful leaving some of your personal belongings on the floor, since the cleaners throw away a bag full of important papers and receipts.
Kind of gotten a phobia of letting the cleaners come in while I stay between the days.
I can't personally say it's that specific cleaners fault, since I can imagine you think it's trash, but keep in mind that they will NEVER throw anything away laying on the desk.

In order to fully understand the the level of service this hotel offers you must hear my story.

I booked my reservation through expedia and was told I was getting a two Queen room with a pull out couch.  When I arrived my reservation was for only a two Queen with no pull out couch.  The first employee at the holiday Inn told me I would have to pay an additional $10 per night in order to get the couch or roll away bed.  Of course I was furious.  So I decided to call Expedia to verify my reservation and there system was down... "I'm sorry I can't help you for an hour."  So we waited on the lobby of the holiday Inn.  Michael came in to work at 11pm on the 21st for his shift which was 15 minutesafter etarrived.  He saw me, my 3 kids, my pregnant wife, and my handicapped mother in law in the lobby miserable. It really is the little things that a lot of other places miss.

Michael decided to upgrade our room complimentary because he knew expedia would take a long time.  His decision literally saved our vacation.  I couldn't get a hold of expedia until 3am!  We would have been screwed!  Ever since Michael clocked on for work he has been one of the most pleasant and helpful front desk employees I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  This guy exemplifies customer service! He even offered to move his car so we could get better parking. He also made fresh coffee for us without is asking.

If you need some pointers watch this man work and take notes because he may be giving night classes on how to make sure your business thrives by treating every person like they are family. 5 stars for Michael. 5 starts for holiday inn for hiring him and negative starts for expedia...

Thanks again Michael from the naitaki family
