Friendly staff, very clean and modern rooms and loved the fact that the fitness center was open 24 hours!  Also loved the large swimming pool, hot tub, complimentary breakfast and the fact that there was free and plentiful parking...especially on a weekend!  The only reason I knocked off a star was because the tv was a bit static-y and we got the room near one of the exits, so we could hear people going in and out as they closed the door.  Oh, and location was great as well!  Would definitely stay here again.

I highly recommend this hotel.  I called the hotel on the way down to San Diego from L.A. asking for rates.  The person I spoke with said the first night was $159 and the second night was $99.  He told me that if I reserved over the phone he would drop the first night rate to $99 as well.  What a nice gesture!!!  The rooms are clean, the neighborhood is nice.  Very close to shops and restaurants.

I stay at this hotel every time I visit Mira Mesa for more than a few hours. And let me tell you, it does not disappoint.

Clean rooms, cheap price, breakfast is quite alright. Hotel has very friendly staff, and the whole place is quite safe. Sorrento Valley is a business park, and you can feel safe parking here for a night.

This, and that Country Inn nearby, are great hotels. Time to go review that one!

So let us rewind to about a month ago. I was sitting at my desk when my boss dropped by to tell me that I should definitely attend this seminar down in San Diego. I was totally excited at the time, and had many plans brewing in my head for how I would spend my free time. Fast forward to Tuesday, the day of my trip down to SD. I woke up hoping I was stuck in a bad dream because I felt like I had caught the death. My throat was swollen, my head was congested, and all the muscles in my body were aching. Suddenly, my SD trip seemed like the worst idea ever.

In order to spend as much time as possible with my bed, I pushed back my leave time and didn't take off until a little after 8PM- meaning I didn't pull into the Holiday Inn parking lot until just after 9:30. Tired, sick, and in my pjs, I dragged my miserable self to check in and was greeted by Jeff, one of the most friendly, quick, and helpful guys I have ever met. I was in my room and settled for the night quicker than I would have ever expected.

With a comfy king size bed, a huge flat screen, and free internet, I was as happy as I could have been for being a sick mess and far away from the comforts of home. With pillows labeled soft and firm, I was able to concoct a most desirable fort of pillows to rest my sickly self on. Surprisingly, when I woke up the next morning, I actually felt, well, not better, but not worse either. Not that that saved me from doing ridiculous things like losing my brush overnight, but with a simple call to the front desk, I was able to get a new one. It was also then that I found out there was a free breakfast served downstairs. The seminar I was going to would be providing coffee and a bunch of sweet pastries, but something about sweet pastries in my condition didn't sound appetizing, so instead, I settled with a bagel, banana, and yogurt. There were other options, pastries, cinnamon rolls, powdered-looking eggs, paper thin bacon, and cereal, but I stuck with the ones that were hard to mess up.

From here I will summarize, since I can ramble on about details for days. The internet had been a little difficult, but when I called to the front desk to find out what the story was, they not only provided me with an ethernet cable, but then followed up with the tech guy and like magic my internet was happy and working. There were also little things like the bowl of fruit and plate of cookies that was always out in the front hall. I liked that. The only things that could have been better, but weren't deal breakers were the quality of the cooked breakfast items, the lack of a fridge, and the AC fan was a little bit on the crazy loud side.

It was a shame I got sick during my SD trip, but I really did luck out on having a safe haven to recover in.

Ah, what we could've had for $50/nt...had we known earlier...

The perks:
King sized bed with quality linens.  Comfortable.  Clean.  Quiet.  Spacious.  Friendly staff.  Clean, fluffy towels.  Free Wi-Fi. Pool with hot tub. Cup-of-noodles available.  Chili's across parking lot.  Free hot/cold breakfast daily.  Workout room. Laundry area.  Late check-out, if you inquire.

The minus side:
No fridge.  No blackout curtains.  Tourist season, so booked solid.  Questionable powdered Egg Beaters.

All in all, the Holiday Inn Express is a great place to stay for personal or business trips.  They have most of the amenities that you'd need, and are not too far off (15-20 min) from many San Diego attractions.  However, unless you have contacts with the chain, expect the price to be at least triple the above wish price...at least during peak season.

We stayed there for a national swim meet being held at the college.  It was about a 15 minute drive for us but we got a great rate on hotwire for the four nights we would be in town.  We enjoyed the lap pool, warm hot tub, large room and clean bathroom.  The only thing they could have done better was to have a microwave in the room for us to enjoy our bag of popcorn and a better internet connection.  We had to call down 3 times for them to fix the signal and then we had to log on again and again as it timed out during the day.  All in all we had a great time in San Diego and enjoyed this hotel.

My husband and I reserved a room block of fifty room-nights at this hotel for most of the out-of-town guests attending our wedding in La Jolla in August 2008.  We chose this hotel because of the location and price:  not terribly far from La Jolla and a price that our friends and family could afford.

If you are familiar with the Holiday Inn Express brand, this hotel delivers: my husband and I always choose this brand all over the country and it has never failed us to deliver clean and quiet odor-free rooms, comfortable bedding, functional and free internet, and a reasonable price.  Note we do NOT choose this brand for the food - just go find a Denny's or McDonald's if you're on a budget but you need to eat in the morning.

I want to call out the fantastic service the manager, Ken, provided us (in making the arrangements) and our family (in serving their needs during their stay.)  Ken is service-oriented, friendly, and produced excellent results.  All the feedback from my family about this hotel, especially Ken and his staff, was quite positive.

Be aware that the hotel is near enough to MCAS Miramar that you will very much hear the jets if they are flying.  The jets do observe a curfew, but if this is a concern for you I'd discuss it with the manager to get the details before you book.  None of our guests complained to us that the noise was a problem.

If you are in the market for an informal hotel in this part of San Diego, I would highly recommend this Holiday Inn Express.

I totally dig this hotel!

It's in a great area (around La Jolla), at a great price (which is hard to find for the area), the rooms are newly renovated and beautiful, the front desk is friendly and helpful, and... wait for it... YOU GET HOOKED UP WITH A FREE HOT BREAKFAST!!! They don't mess around with just plain old pastries and coffee, they practically lay a feast before you with pancakes, bacon, biscuits and gravy, cereals, all different types of juices, fruit and coffee. Yum!

Oh! And they give you free HBO on a new flat screen TV.

I took away one star, only because on their website they said they had pack and plays to use, but they didn't. So if you need a pack and play during your stay, bring your own.

This is a great hotel.  Rooms are clean.  It had gym, nice pool and heated lap pool. Breakfast was really good for a complementary one. Service was awesome.  Rooms were clean.   We enjoyed our 2 nights here.  We will be back for more soon.

Loved our stay here! We received a complementary room upgrade & the front desk personnel went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay! Marion (spelling?) at the front desk was such a sweetheart!! Our room was spacious and more importantly extremely CLEAN! Their breakfast had a good variety of hot and cold foods too! Will def be back!

This is a great hotel-- rooms are comfy, and the breakfast is great.  I just wish the parking situation was better.  Sharing with Chiles and another hotel  is sort of weird.

Finally, a hotel that's actually decent !

Pros:
-Rooms were spacious (bathroom was very clean) with new furniture
The room I stayed in had two queen beds, a microwave, mini fridge, flat screen tv.
Everything inside the room was clean.
-The breakfast was delicious w/ variety:
hot options (omelette, cinnamon rolls, hot coffee/tea, oatmeal packs) as well as cold (yogurt, boiled egg, fruits)
- a gym
-pool / Jacuzzi
- normal hotel amenities (coffee maker, coffee cups, coffee, shampoo, conditioner, a bunch of towels)
-around 4 miles to La Jolla/UCSD

There's a Chili's in the same lot across from the hotel that is open somewhat late; if you're craving for late-night food, there are restaurants/decent fast-food that is open into the early AM's/24hours along Mira Mesa Blvd (intersecting Lusk Blvd).

Cons: I can't think of any.

My experience here should be a case study at hotel school!  A week before my stay here, I started to look for places north of downtown San Diego that were location friendly for work. I do stay with locations from the Intercontinental Hotel Group, but not nearly as much as I did 5-10 years ago. I had never stayed at this property and it fit all of my requirements. I found a slightly better rate on one of the major third party web sites than on Holiday Inn's, so I looked up their "Best Rate Guarantee". It states if the traveler finds a better rate within 24 hours of booking, IHG will extend a complimentary first night to the guest and notify the guest of the decision within 24 hours of notification. Well 24 hours came and went and so did 48 hours. I called the reservations 800 number and asked for guest services. They didn't have a clue about the rate guarantee or what to do about it. I decided to call the Holiday Inn Express in SD and speak to a manager. There wasn't a manager available when I called, but the general manager called me back within the hour and did what I would have never expected her to do: personally guarantee the promise and extend the offer from the IHG website! When I arrived at the hotel, Cece did a nice job of getting me to my room before 1 pm, and upon check out the GM made sure to meet me and introduce herself to me! I can't remember the last time I stayed at a hotel when a manager who worked there put 'their money where their mouth is' and actually gave a s***! They have won a new customer with me, regardless about the idiots at IHG corporate. I hope someone from their offices reads this as a reminder how THIS IS HOW YOU WIN RETURN GUESTS! Thank you Elisa Santos!

So much nicer than any other Holiday Inn Express I have stayed in.

I don't know if every room is a suite, but every time I get a room here, there is a bedroom area with flat screen tv, a sitting area with a couch and ottoman, a coffee/fridge area and a nicely appointed bathroom with granite.

Having a Chili's right there in the parking lot is convenient, but it closes unusually early, so don't count on it for a night cap. But, the Karl Strauss brewery is just a few blocks away, easy walking distance.

If you love carbs, the breakfast here will be perfect for you. They have hot cinnamon rolls and a nice selection of bagels/danish. They also have some fresh fruit and a few hot options. I was not loving the processed egg omelet with cheese whiz, but the sausage patties and biscuits & gravy are decent. The coffee is hotel coffee, so I tend to opt for the Starbucks down the street.

Make sure and give yourself plenty of time to print your boarding pass. The business center here is popular and the computer is slow and it isn't well maintained (often runs out of paper). Just give yourself the extra time to request assistance if you need it.

Minus a few little picky flaws, this place is fantastic.

A solid hotel if you are just looking for a place to stay that is clean, safe, modern and has customer service-oriented staff (front desk and at breakfast dining area).

Our bathroom in our double queen room was clean with plenty of crisp new towels...crisp bed linen, too.  The ends of both double toilet paper rolls were neatly folded to a triangular shape that gave it a neat finishing touch which showed the hotel is concerned about the little details.  Safe neighborhood as it is primarily a business park type area, but which also means that if you want something to eat late at night (after the Chili's across the parking lot closes) you'll have to take a car to find someplace that's open.  There is a soda & water vending machine at the common ice room near the elevator of our 3rd floor.  Able to use free WiFi in our room.  Staff was very helpful, accommodating and friendly.

The only gripe I have is that there should be at least a couple of towel hooks within reaching distance from the tub as there were no towel bars.

Great hotel!!! Very clean, nice pool, apples in the lobby, very friendly, attentive guest services.
I really appreciate a clean hotel in which I can relax and truly enjoy my vacation without having to worry about my kids touching things. The cleanliness and conveniences really made my vacation enjoyable.
My kids had more fun in the hotel pool than they did sightseeing in San Diego!
Breakfast was great! A notch above other holiday inn express breakfasts I've had, with cinnamon rolls and other pastries in addition to the usual fare (which is also great).
Would love to stay here again.

Fantastic hotel!!

First, the rooms are beautiful and comfy. One of the nicest rooms I've ever had at a hotel and it was a lot more than I expected for the cost. It included a large bathroom with granite countertops, a flat screen tv, and a large desk and dresser. Very clean and spacious. Big pool and huge hot tub.

Second, their breakfast is great. Tons of options, including fresh warm cinnamon rolls! YUMMY!! perfect start to my day.

Third, their staff is wonderful and extremely helpful. I hate seeing people that work in customer service that don't enjoy their job or give off bad vibes. Every single employee we came into contact with was so nice and sincere and all around happy. Can't ask for more than that.

Very highly recommend this hotel.

After loading up a truck and a trailer and embarking on a move to San Diego, my mother and I faced one of the most horrible days. The apartment I was scheduled to move into was infested with cockroaches; completely inhabitable. After realizing we could not move any of our stuff in, we repacked the trailer and spent the next two hours trying to get out of the extremely tight parking structure. After the help of some good Samaritans, we made it out and were (finally) on our way to find a place to sleep.

I'm so so so grateful we came across this hotel, but more importantly Eli, who was in charge of the front desk. I came in very stressed out and asked if there was a safe place to store the our truck and trailer (which was not enclosed, leaving my furniture and valuables visible) for the night and he happily told us that he could make it happen. He grabbed the keys of the hotel car and pulled it out of a hidden spot along the side of the hotel and spent the next twenty minutes directing me into the spot, being very patient as neither my mom or I have trailer lugging experience, especially backing in.

After assuring it would be safe, Eli went even further and gave us a room that was close to a window in which we could check up on our truck.

And if he hadn't already exceeded our expectations, because both our phones had died throughout the day, we asked if there was a iPhone 5 charger in the lost and found that we could return in the morning, and he let us borrow his!

All in all, Eli was a guardian angel and made our nightmare of a day a little bit better. Thank you Eli!

The room, the price, the parking, and the people that work here are great. Comfortable beds. Updated rooms. There's a chili's restaurant across the street. I would definitely stay here again.  It's not the prime location of San Diego, but the hotel itself is great. Your about 20 minutes (in good traffic) from Pacific Beach. 25 minutes from the gaslamp district.

Pros:
1. The hotel was located in a very quiet area, so there were really no noises from the street.
2. The room was nice and very clean.
3. There was ample parking even though the lot is shared with Chili's.
4. Staff was courteous and very friendly.
5. Check-in process was quick and painless.

Con:
1. There were very loud noises coming from the pipes when one of the rooms above mine was running their water.

Bottom line: I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again in the future.

I find it very surprising that I'm about to rate this hotel 5 stars, but I was honestly shocked at how much I enjoyed my two night stay here. I've stayed at far more expensive hotels and I haven't had near the enjoyable experience than the one I had here.

1. The room was HUGE. I split the room with three other people, so it was $102 for two nights. Well, there were two queen beds and a sofa bed. I mean, the math adds up perfectly.
2. I've never ever seen a hotel with more HD channels than this one. Seriously, 75 HD channels with HBO! I've been at luxury hotels where you're lucky to even have more than 10 HD channels. Yeah I'm not gonna be at the hotel all day obviously, but it's nice to know that the option is there.
3. Free WiFi. I'm utterly shocked at how many big name hotels actually charge for this...disgraceful.
4. Free breakfast!!! All you can eat scrambled eggs, bacon, and cinnamon rolls! I would seriously stay here again just for the food.

Staff was very courteous too, as check-in and check-out was a breeze. Plenty of parking outside too, which was a major factor in me staying here rather than La Jolla (no sir, I am NOT going to pay $20+ a night just to park my car). All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and would definitely love to stay here again.

P.S. My only real complaint is why the hot water on the faucet is on the RIGHT side, not the left side. Seriously, who the hell screwed up the piping on this?
