I didn't mind this hotel. My boyfriend and i were there from Saturday to Saturday and we had a pretty good time. The concierge was very helpful giving directions and everyone at the front desk was very friendly. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that the decor needs some changes and the breakfast wasn't that great, but the place was really clean and comfortable. They have a DVD player in the room which was nice in case you wanted to stay in one night and just chill out. I loved the turn down service every night with the little chocolate mints on the pillows, it was a nice touch. Also a reviewer wrote that there was alot of street noise, which i agree with, but you are staying in the middle of the city. The location was great, just one block from union square and a cab was only 10-15 bucks to get down to fishermans wharf, but the cable car is also one block away. There are a few good restaurants that were on the same street, I especially liked Max's diner which is right across the street. The only problem we really had with the place was that the Internet was a little sketchy, sometimes you could get online and sometimes you couldn't and We are timeshare owners so we never got pressured into going to a time share sales pitch. All and all i liked this place and i would go back!

Excellent stay for a business -- extraordinary customer service, small hotel ambiance, good sized room, clean and in good repair. Great location, city hotel so some street noise, of course (to be expected).   Took advantage of the happy-hour prices in the bar and got  great caesar salad and a couple of drinks for less than $20 with tip.   Room in good repair, desk is small and used with an upholstered bench.  Microwave, coffeemaker and utensils a terrific convenience for families or business traveler.   My heavenly moment?  Chocolates on the pillow were great, I'll admit...but the shower head that converted to hand held was The Best!

We love staying at the Donatello Hotel.  Every year we spend at least one weekend at the Donatello to shop, eat, and attend plays/musicals.  The hotel has a private feel and excellent service.  It's ideally located at the corner of Post and Mason so you have quick access to lots of shopping at Union Square and the surrounding area.  The rooms are a good size too.

Had a great 7-night stay here in March 08. Room was large, king size bed was nice, and location is great. It's easy to walk to restaurants, and Union Square is right there too. The free wi fi was appreciated as well as the coffee and tea available all the time. Nice place. We will return.

I stayed here once on a business trip before I moved back to the city.  It was nicely elegant, but not pretentious.  The rooms were very comfortable, the staff was attentive, and the location was great.  The wireless internet access was free (a rarity in most hotels, especially chains).  Best part was probably its unique character - definitely not a chain hotel, but not so "unique" as to make you feel weird.

My husband and I stay at this hotel every year. You will be greeted by the friendliest, most helpful staff. The hotel is close to union square. It's clean and the rooms are kept up nicely. In the clubhouse on the top floor you will find a jacuzzi, lounge area and fitness room. There is coffee and tea available. In your room you will find a fridge, microwave, and free wireless. There are also toiletries which housekeeping restocks, robes, umbrella, and a safe. There was some mention of street noise....Really? It is SF after all, and it is a bit noisy no matter where you are. Just close your curtains to help drown out any noise. I personally sleep like a baby when I am there. Another GREAT thing is knowing this hotel is NOT on the bed bug registry. Even some of the more expensive well known hotels have had reports of bed bugs. Some people complained about the cost of parking but it is rather inexpensive when you compare with other hotels. If u like breakfast u can order room service or there is an awesome little place called Cafe La Taza on Post which only takes a minute to walk to and is delish. Bottom line is I've always enjoyed my stay and I hope you enjoy too!

This place is clean and spacious and staff is very friendly.  I like that it's in a  convenient location and we get free in-room wifi.  Good continental breakfast as well.

Some cons is that the sounds of the street could still be heard through the night adn the temperature control in the room doesn't work very well.

I would definitely stay here again if I ever go back to SF.

Granted this is one of my first encounters with a downtown San Francisco hotel, this really kicks ass. The rooms are huge and very very well furnished. You can't beat the loaction. And any one who knows me will know I love the name of it (i'm sure they've heard plenty of ninja turtle jokes in their time). It's not a 5star hotel, but add on a reasonable price with all the surroundings, I'm gonna bump it up to a five.

Might go down to a 4 the more i get aquainted with hotels in the downtown area, but for now i'm lovin it. ba da da da da.

Very nice hotel with convenient location. The rooms are spacious and clean. In addition to the king size bed, our room had a sofa bed which was surprisingly comfortable.  The staff is very friendly and helpful.

The only downside is that their room service comes from Zingari restaurant (ick, yuck, read my review on Zingari!). However, it is so close to Union Square that you can find food easily.

We were fortunate to stay at this gem for 4 nights the last week of September!  We had to reschedule our Spring trip and Chris Magsakay, the Assistant Guest Services Manager, made sure we had comparable rates and a great room when we arrived.  I love a hotel where they treat you like family- greeting you by name, remembering your requests, providing top notch service, ensuring that your wish is their command!  Our room was immaculate- with a comfy, cozy bed- and spacious to boot!  My only recommendation would be to update the bathrooms- which would put this destination over the top!  Carlos, the Bellman, was always equipped with a smile and could answer ANY question you posed.  I loved that parking was included in our rate!  We were a block away from Union Square- and walked EVERYWHERE- discovering fabulous, affordable restaurants nearby.  The free WIFI worked like a charm- and any glitches were quickly solved by Bobby at the front desk.  We took advantage of the complimentary coffee in the Club Room on the top floor every morning and evening!  We will definitely be back and have spread the word of this treasure to all of our friends!

Great location. One and a half blocks from Union Square. Comfortable, nicely appointed room with all requisite amenities - robe, full compliment of bath products, flat screen t.v., couch, even a small jar of assorted candies. Also a little fridge and a few utensils, perfect for making that first cup of coffee in the a.m.
The service was excellent - my 4 p.m. flight on Friday ended up not going until 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, so I needed to unexpectedly cancel my Friday night reservation, way after the cut off time for cancellations. After explaining the situation, I was thankfully told, not to worry I wouldn't be charged for the Friday night. This going out of the way service continued upon my arrival.
And no one tried to sell me a timeshare...

I stayed here with my then-boyfriend, who works for the company that owns this hotel - so I don't know the rates, but it's a pretty decent hotel with nice, spacious, well-furnished rooms and a little balcony area off of some of the rooms that overlooks the city.  They staff  was pretty cool about our noisy party that spanned three rooms - then again, I was with the boyfriend and his bosses, so they probably just put up with us.

One of the advantages of this hotel is definitely location - it's smack dab in the middle of the Union Square area - close to clubs, dining, shopping, even the rental car place is right next door.  I'd recommend this to out of towners coming into SF for a visit who don't want to stay at somewhere too expensive in that area.

Named after my favorite Renaissance artist and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, the Donatello Hotel proved more than sufficient for a recent one night stay in SF.

Good location.  Above average size room that also contained a couch, comfortable bed, and a little wet bar/kitchenette.  Check out nearby Akiko Sushi Bar for a bite to eat ( yelp.com/biz/iIY6k6NnEeU… )

I wouldn't necessarily seek it out again (booked there through kayak.com ) but would visit again under the right circumstances (i.e., not too much $$$).

Nice location, just right for visiting sister and 8-year-old niece.  Wouldn't have been my first choice, but we checked in pretty late in the evening and the service was still great.  They have a weird parking and valet situation, but it was no huge deal.  Appreciate that the windows open and you can look out over Union Square at true city (read: tourists).  Color scheme is cute, but the room amenities were pretty standard.
The hotel cafe happy hour was kind of sucky - tight quarters and my family was pretty tired, so we wanted to just grab a bite and rest before maybe getting real food.  The service was awful and eventually I got a message that we were sorely out of place (since this place was clearly a place for the after-5 business-tourists with the upturned nose that was only slightly convincing given the fact that i know a san francisco snob when i see one, and these were imported for sure.

Overall, my niece was impressed and my sister was comfortable, and that's about all one could ask.  I really, REALLY like hotels, guest houses and B&Bs (no, not for that reason... it's just my favorite part of travel), so I'm pretty picky about what I give a good commendation - a hotel has to really stand out for that extra star.  Donatello didn't quite earn it, but it's a very solid hotel.

Imagine my joy when I found out I was going to the Don in San Fran for a week!  This place is not ultra modern but does the job nicely as it received some recent renovations.  The rooms are spacious enough and comfortable with all the usual amenties inside like LCD TV, a partial furniture living room set and a fridge.  The location, like the other reviews have indicated, is awesome and is within walking distance of the Union Square shopping, Chinatown and eateries!  Here is a tip for those of you looking to score on that super duper expensive parking at about $20+ a day.  See the front desk about previewing their timeshare offerings.  Attend the 2 hour session and resist the urge to buy the timeshare and be rewarded with about $200 or so you can credit towards your parking!  Believe me, it is worth the time as it comes out to $100/hour, where else can you get paid that hourly wage???  Hopefully you can take advantage of this if they still are doing that.  Also, when you talk to the concierge, be sure to ask them about the 2 or 3 block area of town you want to avoid walking to as there is some heavy drug, gang wars, prostitution and other questionable activity (unless you are looking to get into that sort of thing!).  Great place and priced appropriately.

This is a pretty darn good place.  I attend meetings there regularly for the past year and the service has been pretty good.  The restaurant has been especially good.  They also have a great Club Room up on the top floor with free Internet access.  The view from up there is quite spectacular.

I wish concierge was better.  I've asked concierge for things only to find better and closer services on my own.  I'm also a little disappointed with the organization behind the front desk.  I consider this hotel higher up on the ladder than say a Ramada..  But organization is not quite there yet.

I'd stay here if I wanted to disappear from life for a while.  Great location, good restaurant and the guest seem very happy.

This is a good value for the location. I don't spend much time in the hotel when in SF, but it's an OK place for the $.  Two things: when checking in at 11:30 AM, I practically had to twist the guy's arm to get him to check and see if any rooms were available; I know what the check in time was, but any decent hotel will automatically try to get a customer with a reservation into a room if it's ready. Second, the wifi ranges from non-functional to erratic to slow. If you need continuous wifi in your room, you are not going to be happy here.

    Absolutely love this place!

I've stayed here on more than one occasion (not in the lasy year though...it always booked!) and have always enjoyed my stay.

The rooms are phenomenally large for SF.  The time I've stayed I paid around $129-149 a night, which for the quality, size and location is crazy good.

The rooms I've stayed in featured huge bright windows overlooking the city, a wet-bar, lots of closet space and good sized bathroom.

I totally recommend this spot, if you're lucky enough to request a night when there's availability.

Donatello, forgive me for taking so long to review you!

Boyfriend & I stayed there the 1st weekend (Fri-Sun) in November and it was an AMAZING stay. The location is absolutely PERFECT... about a 5 minute or less walk to Union Square. We thought we were going to have to rent a car, but didn't need to!

Right away, Ed at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. He checked us in and took us to a room on the 10th floor. It was a corner unit with tall ceilings with open-able windows... views were amazing! I was actually surprised the windows opened because there were no screens, but we loved the fresh air! We relaxed in the room before heading down to explore the city. We came back to the hotel & asked Ed at the front desk about a particular City Tour on a double decker bus. He said he'd check it out while we headed up to the room to grab our jackets. A couple of minutes later, he called up to our room to tell us he wanted to upgrade us to a different room! He escorted us to the new room, which was a suite on the 5th floor, but was larger, with floor to ceiling windows and a large sliding glass door on 1 side, and a GARDEN/PATIO outside!!! To be honest, BOTH rooms were AWESOME (they advertise as the largest rooms in San Francisco & I believe it... both were huge, had king beds, lots of clothing storage, mini refrigerators, full size pull-out couches, flat screen TVs, closets, vanity areas, etc). Ed informed us that the corner room could be a little noisy at night because of all the windows facing the street, which is totally understandable, so we switched to the garden room & enjoyed peace & quiet for the duration of the stay.

Another thing we loved about the Donatello was the top floor club level. They have hot coffee, hot cocoa, and tea at all hours along with an electric fire place and movies on a flat screen, comfy couches, multiple chairs & tables, a gym, spa, and wonderful city views from outside. Many mornings, we'd just grab some hot beverages and be on our way. Super convenient. Ed also gave us a map and a packet of city coupons for local restaurants and shopping (b/c SF has amazing restaurants and shopping!) and some coupons that were also valid in ALL store locations! Ed hooked us up with late check out (2 p.m.!!!) since our flight on Sunday didn't leave till 8 p.m. We went out to explore the city again, then came back to the roof club level to enjoy some hot beverages and relax on the couch before we left. The hotel then arranged a private town car for us at short notice, but it turned out to be one of those luxury SUVs at no extra cost... definitely better than walking to the BART in the rain with our suitcases!

They participate in the travelocity incentives program so we got an amazing deal... we would go again in a heartbeat!

They attended to everything that we needed day and night... Thanks to everyone at the Donatello for making my stay excellent!! Check this place out, you will be glad you did!!

The hotel was nice but kind of strange. We were there from Fri-Sun. On Friday when we checked in their tried to get us to go to this time share presentation, then on the next day we got back from seeing the area around 8 and around 8:30 the maid came to turn down the room, weird time to be doing that doesn't that sort of thing get done during the day. Also that day they tried to charge our credit card a day early. If it wasn't for the fact that we were planning on using another credit card they would have done it early. I had to go downstairs and tell them that we were using a different card and I offered them the card at that time. They said that it was ok and to give it to them tomorrow, when we check out. The next day they tell us again that our card doesn't go through and I have to go through it all again! What a pain...especially since I was there for my honeymoon.

I don't think that with all we had to deal with it was worth the price we paid. But there were some good qualities about the place, when I called to confirm my reservations I asked for a upgraded room for free b/c its my honeymoon and they did give it to me. I think the other reason that the place is been able to get away with charging so much for the rooms is because its so close to everything. If I was apart of their time share program this place would probably be worth it but as a honeymoon spot, I think its ok.

Stayed here as we are Shell Vacation owners and this is one of the Shell properties.  LOVED IT!  We were allowed to check in much earlier than the normal check-in time, thanks to Jesus....who, by the way, is friendly and funny but professional.  Our room was impeccable!  Loved the TV in the mirror in the bathroom....just the novelty of it.  Didn't really use it much except to show friends who live in the area when they came to hang out with us.  That brings me to the next really positive thing about the hotel.....our room was quite large with a king bed and a queen sofa bed with not one, not two, but THREE ottomans....this provided ample seating for everyone.  There was also a nice sized table with a couple of chairs that we put to good use.  The room also had a fridge and microwave, GLASS glasses (wine, champagne, beverage) instead of plastic like you get in many hotels, bowls, plates and silver.  Added bonus was a complimentary wine/cheese reception.  When I walked in, I thought it was going to be a time share presentation and I was NOT happy.  Instead, it was a speaker telling us about a musical close by and offering discounted tix.  I was asked once by the concierge if I would be interested in a "member update" which really means they want to try to sell me more weeks and I politely declined and that was the end of it.  The location was another positive experience.  It was walking distance to plenty of restaurants, bars, shopping, and liquor stores!!  It was also very close to cable car stops and also the BART.  That came in VERY handy for our friends to get back out of SFO and to their homes.  Would definitely stay here even if it wasn't a Shell property!

I stayed at the Donatello for five nights recently and would recommend it to anyone looking for four star quality at a three star price. I've stayed at other hotels in SF, and nothing in this price range compares. The hotel is centrally located near Union Square and the Powell BART station. Upon arrival, the lobby is nothing spectacular, but how often do you hang out in a lobby anyway? (If that's your thing, I highly recommend the lobby at the Clift Hotel down the street. It will blow your mind) Check-in was fast and we were in our room in minutes. Unlike most Union Square hotels, the room at the Donatello is enormous, with a real king size bed, pull out sofa, flat screen TV, and a kitchenette/wet bar stocked with cutlery, assorted glasses and plates, microwave and mini fridge. The windows can even open and close when you want some fresh air. Bonus freebies: nightly turndown service with chocolates, decent wifi throughout the hotel, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate all day at the club level (great first thing in the morning), business center in the lobby with a printer (ideal for printing out boarding passes).

Some downsides: the shower is the Euro style hand held deal. Several times the shower handle fell off the wall and ended up spraying everywhere. Also, the temperature control is difficult. For some reason, the shower water is 1000X hotter than the water that comes out of the tap into the tub. One hint-DO NOT judge the water temp by running it in the tub first and then pulling the knob to turn on the shower. Instead, turn the shower on first and slowly increase the heat. Thank me later.

Also, despite being November, our room was very hot. Even with the AC on, it never cooled down until we closed the black out curtains and opened the windows.

Overall, the Donatello is convenient, spacious, and a great value in downtown San Francisco.

This hotel is amazing.  I stayed in The Donatello during the Nike Women's Half Marathon in October.  My friends and I had a great experience here.  The hotel is beautiful, employees are friendly, and everything is easily accessible here, especially during the NWM.  The hotel has great amenities:
    Massage Rooms
    Restaurant in the hotel
Concierge (he was very useful for us, you can ask him for restaurants, activities, transportation, etc)
    An upper level common room

    ..and much more!

Lovely breakfast spread. Check to see if your condo ownership is in the same network as Club Donatello's! Roomy space, comfy bed and updated room technology.

Fast, in-room wifi. Fitness center. Sauna. Jacuzzi. Computer center with printer for guest use. Valet and hotel parking (gets full easily). Zingari Italian Restaurant and Bar on premise -- fun staff!

I'll keep this short too. The room, service and proximity to Union Square were all great. No complaints except for the nerve wrecking noise from the street that made sleep nearly impossible. We were on the 10th floor and our room looked South towards a parking garage (quiet) but also to a very busy Mason St. Seems that street has a couple of night clubs that attract a lot of loud drunks. Our white noise generator (that we brought from home) combined with static from an AM radio wasn't enough to cutout the noise. The other rooms look out towards Post St, which I can't imagine would be any quieter.

If it wasn't for the noise I'd have given this hotel four - five stars.

The room was huge! We had a King size bed and a Queen pull-out sofa. For 3 petite girls, that is plenty of room!
Room was equipped with a kitchenette, including fridge and microwave, plates & utensils, so if you go out for a delicious meal and order too much, you can bring it back to the room.

The breakfast in the club room was how do I say... .a little awkward? But it's free coffee/tea bagels so you can't really complain. The wifi was a little shaky, but we weren't bothered by any noise (at least, I wasn't).

    - free WIFI
    - nice continental breakfast
    - friendly staff
    - huge room
    - great prices (I got in on the Recession Special - $99/night for 5 nights)

Very comfortable hotel, and as other posters have mentioned - you really can't beat the location. It's quiet and the staff members were all very friendly and helpful. There are some real dumps in SF, and you can also easily blow $300 a night for a hotel room, but the Donatello's a nice happy medium between cheap and luxurious.

Rooms can be a little small, but that's SF for ya.

Our 3 night stay at the Donatello Hotel was wonderful, until the final morning.

We were staying on the 12th floor, as part of the timeshare program, Club Donatello.  We were staying as guests of long term clients, people who have given the Donatello steady business for over 10 years.  There was construction on floor directly above us and for most of the stay it was absolutely no problem.  Then, at 9am, the last morning of our stay, we were all awakened out of a deep sleep by the sound of a drill that was so loud that we couldn't even hear each other speak, and that isn't an exaggeration.  The drilling continued for about 10 minutes, and when it was clear that it wasn't going to stop, my friend called the front desk and asked what they could do about it.  This is when we got really upset.

The front desk told us they would try to call the Club Donatello manager but that there was really nothing they could do if they couldn't get a hold of them, which they were unable to do.  After 10 more minutes of no results, my friend called again and they said they still couldn't get the manager on the phone.  At this point, because the drill sounded like it was in our room and literally made our teeth chatter, my friend actually went upstairs to speak to the construction crew in person.  They said they had the go ahead at 9am so it really wasn't up to us to tell them when to stop.  Another 20 minutes later, they finally did stop so we assumed that someone finally got in touch with them.  They started up a little while later but it was much more quiet.

Things could have been smoothed over at this point, if the management had been apologetic or cooperative at all.

We asked them to comp our parking, which was $30 a night, for a total of a whopping $90.  They told us they would, and we were someone appeased.  Then, the gentleman at the front desk informed us that they would only be comping the last 2 nights of our stay, because we were in a different room the first night.  I have worked in the hotel industry before, and when you have an unhappy guest, especially guests of a loyal client, you generally do everything you can to make them happy.  Not allow a difference of $30 to get in the way.  We left with a sour taste in our mouth after a lovely weekend.  Clearly, the management needs to learn what good business is.  Very unimpressed.

Other than that, the housekeeping, front desk, and bar employees were fantastic.

Ok, I can't for the life of me figure out why people are not rating this place lower. I read some of the reviews before coming here (for my honeymoon of all times) and was pretty excited!! Are ya kidding me right now! Where do I begin hmmm....orange and blue..gag me! I still have nightmares about the pukey orange wall.
Me and my husband go to check out the spa which is close to whatever it is they want to call where they serve breakfast and the guy at the desk tells us there is a "dress code"...sorry sir but we are going to the 3 foot by 3 foot spa (that's a another joke) anyway, so one day we actually get up in time to go to breakfast still hung over and put real clothes on just to find nothing more than a donut or muffin is on the menu. Good thing there is a dress code to eat a muffin!!! It's sad to say that I have experienced better service and amenities in Yuma, AZ...Yuma!!!!!

Stayed here w/ the BF for one night and it was pretty nice!

    -Great location
    -Great Service
-Room was very spacious and cutely decorated (surprisingly I liked the blue/orange combo)
-Valet service as well as check in/out was fast and friendly

-They had no complimentary continental breakfast (they used too so I was disappointed that I had to make due w/ a banana and the coffee maker in the room)
-Our room was located next to the elevator so our bathroom was literally around the elevator corner (not that big of a deal but a little inconvenient when its dark and you're trying to make your way to the br but have to keep turning corners to find it)
-They don't have 24 hour room service/kitchen open but that's just me being lazy since there are plenty of other places open late or 24 hours down the street

I would definitely stay here again! Although maybe not in the room next the elevator : )

Everything was perfect at the Donatello! We received great attention from the moment we arrived. (Post Street is confusing to first time drivers in the Union Square area and it took three trips around the block with Christmas shoppers jumping in the street to navigate our way.)

Our room was huge, a gigantic king size bed, a large window looking down at the street, and a small kitchen. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. (After reading other Yelpers post-stay I wish we received a later check out time or upgrade to a room that some reviewers have gushed about...).

Best part of the hotel is the penthouse hang out area and roof deck. Get up there, get a cup of complimentary coffee and start your day right!

This place was very nice.  It is in a good location, within walking distance to shopping, restaurants, and the cable cars which will take you to other SF destinations.  The room was very clean and nice, they even have a lounge area near the roof where you can relax with a drink and look at the city.  They have valet parking, they park the cars in a garage that is connected to the hotel.  If I ever go back to San Francisco I will most likely be staying here again!

I'm an experience person and so some may hate my review. If you're looking for excitement don't stay here. It's tired. People working here are tired, the building is tired, and it's dated, very dated. It felt safe, people were nice, and you know you're gonna be standing in the elevator with some little ol' couple from Arkansas or something. BORING. It was very nice and clean with a view on the top floor kind of, with free coffee and a nice Concierge to chat with but you won't meet many new people.

Stayed here for 3 nights since I have extra timeshare points left with Shell Vacations.  Everyone at the front desk was friendly.  Thank You Mark at the front desk.  Liked the club lounge and went up every night to get my free hot chocolate :)  The only downsize is definitely the $28 valet parking.  As an elite owner, I thought it was pretty ridiculous for any owner to have pay $28 night for parking.  Other than that, nice size room considering it's in Union Square, clean, convenient location, and very nice staff.

Best hotel stay in SF so far.

Staffers are nice and quick to respond (extra pillow, tooth brush, etc..).

I was in the King suite.  Very clean and huge!  I love the open roof top.  Breakfast on the roof top was the best part of the stay.  Gym is small but no one is really there but staffers.

Close to China town & Union square attractions.  Very loud in the morning so beware.  (this cannot be avoided at any hotel in downtown SF, I learn this from staying at 4 different hotels in SF).

Let's see my family has a timeshare and I have been coming here for I think more than 12 years, so I definitely like this place.  The location is very ideal right near Union Square and though I don't like Ruby Skye it's cool that it is in eyes view from it.  The rooms are always nice, clean and comfortable and I always look forward to the chocolate on my pillow.  They have a nice members club upstairs to relax in, have a coffee and read a newspaper.  Also, the service is always pleasant, friendly and very helpful when you have questions.

When this was a true hotel, European friends stayed and marveled at the rooms, service, and location.  Now that the Donatello has joined the SVC family of resorts, even better.  Yeah, parking is a drag -- but so is everywhere else in San Francisco and many other cities around the world.  Clean, quiet, well-appointed, . . . .  Great place to stay in San Francisco.

The location of the Donatello Hotel is outstanding.  It is in Union Square, so everything is around you.  As a member of Shell Vacations Club, it was well worth my points to stay there.
I was able to walk from my hotel to the Orpheum theatre and all around Union Square.  The room was spacious and had all the amenities one would need while on a weekend trip.  The Donatello also provides free WiFi.  The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The only set back is the expensive parking, but it is San Francisco, so the price is comparable with the other garages in the area.
The Donatello overall was provided a great place to stay in the city and is definitely a place I would return to.

This is great value for the money. Central location and spacious rooms. We are a family of four and we had a large room with a queen size bed and pull out bed and a sofa for $240 a day! There is also a kitchenette so you can make  breakfast. So, on the plus side count the location, the great price and the spacious rooms. The hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. There is also free coffee all the time on the top floor. On the minus side, there is no breakfast in the hotel and the jacuzzi and gym is nothing to write about. A small room with very few pieces of gym equipment and many of them don't work. But these are minor compared to the advantages. Overall, a very positive experience.

This hotel is between 3.5-4.0. The location is amazing - Union Square is great and close to everything. I got a room away from the street and could barely hear the street even with the window open. The hotel was very quiet too - I couldn't hear the neighbors at all, the occasional hallway noise was tolerable. The rooms are spacious, the bed is so comfortable. The fold out was so convienant and my friend said it was comfortable. The rooms had microwave, refridge and sink and dishes, etc. That was the best part. The hotel is nice, a bit dated and needs updating as well as a painting in all the rooms.
Be aware - the hotel is a timeshare so they will try to get you into a sales pitch. Just be prepared that this is not a Westin or JW Marriott - the staff is friendly but not...polished. Often they didn't have the directions or tips I was looking for, but Yelp was sufficient for my purposes. The parking is $30/night.
The restaurant is nice. The burger was so delicious, but the crab cakes were dry. The 15th floor has a club level with gym, sauna, free coffee, and outside deck with smoking area.

This is a timeshare, you need to know that upfront.  They will try to sell you a timeshare, but that's ok.  It's a very educational experience.

This is a very nice place to stay.  We had a large studio for one week that was absolutely perfect for our stay in SF.  The room is well appointed--kitchenette with fridge, microwave, toaster, glassware, dishes, utensils--large bathroom with a super deep soaking tub--flatscreen tv with VCR, bose stereo--sofa and chair, small desk.  The  staff is the the most accomodating you will find anywhere.

My only complaint would be the breakfast served on the top floor.  It's pretty miniscule and it doesn't start until 7 so we either went to the corner diner (Pinecrest) or had cereal and bagels in our room.  The view from the 15th floor is spectacular and they always have coffee and tea available.

Here's the good:  Really nice rooms with frdige and safe, friendly staff, good location.

But there is no excuse in this day and age to have wireless that is slower than old
dialup. I've stayed here 3 times (bought 6 nights on a Groupon-type deal) and each time the internet was impossible. Worse, management acts like they never heard this before. OR that it's location-specific. One even sent us up to the Club, saying it was faster--where it was equally slow.

Many of us count on internet to make reservations, look up things to do etc, or to keep up with work and email, and it is virtually impossible at this hotel. As much as I like the accommodations, I'll stay elsewhere, pay more and get real internet.

Sorry Donatello, you've seen the last of us.

Hotel itself didn't seem all that updated. Some nice amenities staff was very friendly but gym was not properly taken care of pieces of equipment on floor and treadmill needed adjustment you could hear the belt rubbing on machine. The gap underneath front doors were very big so the light from hallway would shine through. Doors would slam when someone would enter room. So noise level was pretty high. Windows weren't soundproof or double pane so entire night could hear siren, people talking, car horn and everything else. I did not have a good night sleep at all during stay. Great location though to everything. I would not stay again in this hotel.

First time at this Hotel and if you want a good nights sleep I wouldn't recommend it because it is quite noisy from the hallways to the rooms adjacent to yours and you can hear the person next door snoring all night. Amongst all that noise you have to put up with the street noise also. People talking or yelling down below, garbage trucks and trash can noises from bottles being thrown away from restaurants, sirens, car noise , etc. As for the location it's great since it's walking distance to anywhere in downtown San Francisco. They say this hotel was remodeled about a year ago but I expected a lot better than what I saw. I felt bad for the young couple from New York City who were checking out at the same time I did and they had the same experience. Maybe the CEO or manager should spend a night in one of the rooms on the 6th or 7th floors and see if he can sleep restfully.

Had a lovely stay at the Donatello.  Front desk people were very friendly. Room condition was decent and the bed was COMFY!  We did not even notice any noise from the streets until we went onto the terrace.  Valet was super fast but my only complaint was that there was I guess no communication between the front desk and maid service?  I was asked what time we wanted our room cleaned but sure enough the maid showed up WAY early...but she was still very nice.  The tv in the bathroom mirror was sAweet.  However everytime one of us needed to use the bathroom we all spent WAY too much time in there. We found this place on Hotels.com and liked the reviews.  So we decided to book it since it was in a good location and pretty affordable.

This place was very easy to get to from the airport.  Just a ride from the Bart to Union Square and a short walk.  We couldn't have asked for a much better location.  It was just off the main Union Square area so we didn't get the traffic, but it was an easy walk to all the shops and restaurants.  Also, there is a ton of public transportation within short walking distance.  Everything just seemed to be easy getting to places, finding things, etc.

The hotel room was pretty decent in size.  The rooms had a king size bed, a small bar area with refrigerator and sink, a couch and a decent view.  The AC was working well but didn't really need it.  The beds were soft and the bathroom was clean.  It was great.

The hotel was nice.  The staff was friendly and very helpful.  They stowed our baggage on our last day in town since our flight out was so late.  They arranged a shuttle for us to take to the airplane.

This was a fantastic place to stay and I strongly recommend to anyone.

solid place.  I came to SF for an interview and found this place via priceline (name your own price).  Compared to Parc 55 (where I was recommended to stay), I paid $110, people were friendly, internet was free.

One thing, it says "union square/tenderloin" for the location (Tenderloin is a bad area of SF) but I didn't feel that way.  Maybe it was technically in tenderloin, but I felt very safe.

I would definitely come here again.

Even if I go to San Fran for something else, I would probably stay here. The rooms are a good size and have lots of amenities (i.e. microwave, silverware, fridge, coffee maker, DVD player, cd player). There was also a little sitting area. The staff was also super nice.

The only complaint I have is the noise level from the street! I woke up multiple times due to noise. However, I think this may just be a San Fran thing.

A very comfortable hotel with very generous sized rooms. The decor is a bit dated and the shower isn't the best but the beds are very comfortable, the pillows are nice and actually have some support to them, and the service is friendly. There is a mini fridge and microwave in the room as well along with plates and silverware. I always love this little touch as when you're staying at a hotel and have to go out to eat for every meal it's nice to be able to take your leftovers with you for a midnight snack instead of ordering more room service.

We stopped downstairs to have a drink in the lounge and they had some nice jazz music too which was very nice.

Very close to Union Square and many good restaurants.

Location, Location, Location. The Donatello is located behind the St Francis on Taylor & Post street and it is close proximity to Union Square's shopping and dining.  I had a chance to stay on the 8th floor facing  the Marriott and facing Post street.

Stayed on the 8th floor and our room had updated decor, a wet bar, nice flat screen TV plus a sofa and big sitting chair. The bed was a big and a comfy California King. Naturally moved the furniture around to catch HBO's Entourage and some of the March Madness NCAA tournament.  The room had windows that could open up for fresh air and view ( I don't think that is a very common feature in the hotels surrounding the area). Great for people watching, so many tourists.

One thing I did notice in the morning you could hear voices that would echo up to the 8th floor. Ladies doing the 4am walk from Ruby Skye talking about the Grey Goose cosmos or the the drunk man shouting obscentities in the early morning...shut up out there so I can sleep. So deduct the star for not having double pane windows.

I did not visit the restaurant, 2nd floor lounge but I did check out the weight room and stainless steel jacuzzi (very nice since no one else was around). Very clean and well lit, give it an A for cleaniless.

Very friendly staff with a concierge service on the 12th floor for booking shows and attractions. Where was the free continental breakfast everyone talked about.? Parking was available at approx $40.00 a night. Definitely enjoyable for a Fri-Sat nite weekend in the city.

Staff is a happy staff. They actually seem to enjoy their jobs and the customers they serve. Could not have been any more accommodating from front desk to parking attendant.

Room is extraordinarily spacious for the money and was a welcome change. Loved the large sofa and lounge. I enjoy laying on a couch after a long day and reading or watching TV. I loved having this feature. ONLY complaint was that the bedding was too soft for my liking.

The small kitchenette again was welcomed and was well equipped so that I got to have some above average in room snacks.

Location is great. One block from Union Square and all it has. to offer. Hard to beat. Street noise was a little more than some locations but that's what happens when you are in a part of the city that is full of life.

I just returned from a four day vacation in San Francisco. I spent two nights at the Donatello and two nights at another hotel in Union Square. I would go back to the Donatello in a heartbeat. Based on other Yelp reviews, I requested a Deluxe King. The room was HUGE with plenty of room for suitcases, hanging clothes and toiletries.  The room had a separate bar area with a sink, microwave and empty refrigerator. I didn't have to worry about moving a $5 bottle of water and being charged. I liked being a few blocks north of the crowds surrounding the Powell/Market Street area. Yes, I heard some of the city noises, but not enough to disturb my sleep. The other two nights I spent in the middle of the Powell/Market Street area. I won't make that mistake again.

If staff quality and helpfulness were the only criteria for a review, they would get six out of five stars! The staff at every one of the Shell Vacations Club hotels we have stayed at have been the very best! At the Donatello, this was not any different. As soon as we walked in, PJ helped us out, the check-in and followup service by Patricia was awesome, seriously awesome. Deo (spelling?) was also helpful to the extreme. Carhops and garage personnel, cleaning staff... everyone in every hotel we've been to with SVC have been expert at what they do.

The room was clean and comfortable, except the new couch was not to my liking, being somewhat 50's style and stiff. TV could have been bigger, but it helped that we didn't spend much time watching it.

Location is great, being one short block from the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf, and we took full advantage of that, having one of the best SF experiences you can have with a ride there and back. Interacting with tourists on the cable cars was fun.

We love Tommy's Joynt at Geary and Van Ness, and were able to walk there for dinner one night of our stay in about 20 minutes. The Tenderloin of SF, known for its slummy feel, is close by, so you need to keep your walking toward the other direction. Staff tells you where not to go.

We have always stayed at the Inn At The Opera before on our annual birthday/anniversary trip to The City, and enjoy it as well, but we're glad to have an option for future visits.

Biggest plus of this stay, though, was definitely the staff!!!

2.5 stars. Great price to value, friendly staff, helpful concierge, relatively quick valet, comfortable bed.  Excellent location. Rooms clean, hotel clean. For the downsides: Rooms dated/dark, lots of street & hallway noise, bathroom small and outdated (our shower made a whining noise), restaurant and bar small. Stayed 2 nights with 3 kids (13-19) in 2 rooms, adequate for our crew.

Great location and prices. Recently upgraded rooms, to include climate control, make this fantastically located boutique hotel at very reasonable prices a reliable bet in the Union Square area.

The service at this hotel is particularly superb as each member of the staff visibly enjoys working there; this translates into consistent and top notch service during one's stay.

What a great location!!!  Definitely so close to everything! Don't need to drive at all to great places to eat, drink, shop, and people watch.  *They do charge for valet/day (~ $31.00/day)*   We stayed in a room that had a kind bed and a pull out sofa couch.  Our room was pretty spacious and updated, decor was nice. Free wi-fi, microwave, mini fridge, and coffee maker in room as well! Super cool that there is a little sitting area to put on shoes.  And double super cool for the bathroom mirror having a built in TV in it!!

The Top floor roof consisted of the lobby, sitting area (inside and outside), gym, sauna, and co-ed jacuzzi.  Nice view up there!  ALSO so cool they have coffee, different types of tea and hot cocoa you can fill yourself up with 24 hours a day!

So happy I stayed here.  This will be a place I'd recommend for anyone who wants a good, clean & updated hotel near the union square.

We loved our spacious  and comfortable room, the " kitchenette" and all  all the premium channels TV . Location is hardly beatable. Most of the other hotels within the area offered for the same value much smaller rooms. We were with the small kid ( 2.5 year old) and I highly recommend stay  to the  people with the small kids who want/need to be in the central SF area.
Before I booked a room ,I read all the reviews, learned about the club and the noise and requested a room on the quieter side. Management was kind enough to grant my wish without any resistance.  We got a really great room that overlooked  Mason/Post St side.  We were very happy.
Note that this is the downtown San Francisco so if you are looking for a totally soundless environment- than staying downtown overall may not be a good idea for you. City life carries its noise. We were never bother by any noise at Donatello , our toddler slept like a little lamb throughput the night.
Staff is very friendly. "Bell -boys" were very nice with my son they gave him a ride on the suitcase rack.
My husband was participating at the conference in SF and we were offered a list of the downtown hotels that had a deal with the conference. Donatello wasn't on the list - I found it on my own research and I am nor regretting for choosing it. I would defiantly stay here again.

Very nice, smaller hotel in the heart of Union Square. The rooms are nicely sized, especially for SF, they have microwaves, mini fridges, a DVD player, and super comfy beds. Also live jazz music on some nights..

The one thing that I didn't like is that there are no vending machines in the entire hotel.. woke up parched and nothing to drink!! ugh.. had to walk down the street to the market. I was not a happy camper.

    Other than that, great hotel.

After a hard day hoofing, toiling, hiking walking around San Francisco's 45 degree incline hills and streets, it's time to chill out relaxing at Donatello's spa retreat!

Dry sauna, hot tub, shower makes me feel refreshed, invigorated!

This hotel is excellent and definitely worth 5 stars on Yelp.  It has a great location and the room we stayed in was great! It had a king size bed, mini living room, spacious bathroom (with a tv in the mirror!!), and a sink and a microwave.

The location is right in Union Sq - ten minute walk to the Bart, only minutes to muni buses, and 10 minute walk away from the start of the trolley car on Powell!

They have a club room where you can enjoy complimentary coffee on the rooftop deck and a community hot tub (indoors unfortunately).

I loved my stay at the Donatello and it made me love San Fran even more!

Service isn't great - wifi unbearably slow and no one addressed it despite requests
    Timeshare sales pitch at check-in
    No flexibility on checkout time
    Location is good
Condition is a bit ragged but OK overall
Would say this hotel is advertised as being bit nicer than it is, but if you're on a budget, it does the trick.
My room was in the back so I didn't have the street noise others complained of.

I have been staying at this hotel since I was very young and I continue to love the facilities!

Hard working staff, trustworthy valet drivers, and comfortable rooms.

This hotel is also in an ideal location for catching the subway or for going out at night. Great location and affordable prices are really what sells me on this hotel.

Just returned from a 5 night stay. We completely enjoyed this hotel. The staff was wonderful, especially Jesus, who helped us get a super cheap rental car, and it was very clean. The club on the top floor is awesome. Great to grab take out and bring drinks up for a night in or before going out. Did not use the gym facilities. The bed was so comfortable. Quick note - our rook dod not get turned down unless we called to request, but they came in and did the dishes everyday - so not sure how that works, might want to double check if that is something you want on a daily basis. Overall had a great stay and would definitely recommend this hotel.

A bit torn with how to rate this one; I'd give it 3.5 stars actually. The facility was nice enough, and ALL the staff were wonderful -- especially Mark at the front desk -- but despite the great central location, even being on the 6th floor was extremely noisy. Street noise all day and night that was barley muffled and the walls are a bit thin too. I still recommend it if you bring earplugs or headphones, but not a place if you want quiet. The roof club is nice, but quite small.

Not what they where. We have stayed here for 4 years and it was the best in the city. BUT things have changed. Just got back from are last trip. Was there in Oct. Nov. and Dec. of this year 2014. Here is what we had over the last 3 trips. You may to may not get a bath mat or towels replaced. Yes some days they did not replace what they took out of the room. You may or may not get the coffee replaced each day. Some days they did not clean the coffee pot. I know they have a new owner and it seems the cleaning staff does not care about cleaning the room or stocking towels. The best part is they are not the only place to stay in the city. If you want a place to stay that is close to a Motel 6 in the city they are working hard to be that place.
It's sad to me. They use to be one of the best but now they act as if they don't care. And the room staff seems to careless if your room is clean or they replace towels or mats.

Came here on a bad weekend where everyone seemed to come into SF and the road was crowded.  I thought the garage was full so I circled around the area looking for another garage and even called in hotel to realize that they reserve parking spots for guests here.  The real reason we didn't see the entrance was cause it was right next to another parking area.

Once we got in, Edwin, who helped out at the front desk was very kind and helpful.  Since we were celebrating my birthday he arranged a nice gift for the occasion.
I didn't get to enjoy the hotel perks besides the actual room was nice.  It was spacious and we were given a room away from the night club side.  There was a TV in the bathroom! and a couch right besides the bed so these little things were quite nice.  The remotes to the TV need updating since you would have to hold it and aim a specific way in order for it to actually change the channel.

Since it was rainy, a different front desk helper recommended us to take a taxi to get to our dinner reservations and hailed a cab for us for when we were ready to leave.

Overall, this was a nice place for all who are looking to get a hotel by Union Square in Sf.  The service was great, they definitely made me feel welcomed.  I will definitely recommend this place to others who may come in from out of town.

First night in and the check-in was the smoothest of all timeshare locations. Every question we had they had an answer for and of they didn't they would find it.
Location is incredible. 2 blocks from cable car. 2 blocks from union square. Right in the center of it all.
Room is awesome. Refrigerator, kitchen sink, a little microwave, and dishes. Bathroom is clean and big enough. All the windows face the action. You can hear the street car horns, but so what, it is a vacation in a major city.

Only yuck moment is paint peeling off of bathroom door. But, I didn't spend a lot of time staring at the bathroom door.

If you are time Sharing and looking for apartment style you are looking at wrong place. If you want luxury hotel in killer location you found the spot.

What a great hotel. It's right downtown, the service is exceptional, the rooms are spacious and clean... Definitely exceeded expectations.

We took the train from Ann Arbor to San Francisco as a vacation so that we could see the country and also experience American train travel (vs European train travel) and then stayed in the city here at the Donatello for a week before continuing up the coast.

Using booking.com we got a fantastic deal and were impressed from the start. I called the hotel to confirm everything and when we arrived we were greeted at the curb by attentive, friendly staff who helped us with our baggage (we were bumming up the coast for over two weeks and had bigger bags). The check in process was quick and painless, the bell staff were always wonderful (offering to make reservations, offering to hail cabs, holding doors, etc.). Our room was huge with a king bed, very comfortable pullout couch (that my mom never once pulled out it was so comfortable) and enough semi-costed off space near the door/bathroom with closets and drawers that we didn't feel like we were in a hotel. Kris would not shut up about the television in the bathroom mirror.

Staying in a hotel for a week can be a challenge. This was not.

One night we took the night off from exploring and stayed in for room service and a movie. The room service (Italian) was very, very tasty.

All in all a great deal. When we bring our exchange student to San Francisco in a few months we're staying here again.

Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Donatello.

I stayed here for my birthday and booked the room via Hotwire Hot Rates. The location is very close to Union Square and has valet parking for a fair price ($28/night) Our room was very comfortable. Very spacious, pullout couch, and a tv in the mirror in the bathroom (very cool). It was a very nice surprise to see that we had a balcony that we shared with 4-5 other guest rooms (5th floor) I have only seen this at the Civic Center Holiday Inn. We enjoyed the balcony while people watching those who were in line for Ruby Skye & Slide.

My only complaint is that 2 bottles of champagne cost me $175 with gratuity already included. I understand there is a mark up for hotels but I asked them for a lower end bottle (since we were conserving money for later in the night).

All-in-all, I had an amazing stay at the Donatello and will surely be back again. This hotel is definitely a bargain and worth every dollar.

Best overall hotel I've stayed in San Francisco for the following reasons:

It's centrally-located; a block from union square. Spacious, modern rooms, comfy bed, microwave and mini fridge. The staff and service is friendly and responsive to a man. Free internet in the room (and not just in lobby) and free access to fitness room, sauna, and whirlpool. There's also a comfortable rooftop lounge to relax and work.

My husband and I spent a night here for a mini vacation away from the kids. My first impression was, the valet guys were very kind but didn't offer to have our bags brought up to our rooms. The room was pretty out dated. Forest green carpeting, gold curtains and old wood shutters, gross. Our room unfortunately was facing Mason st, and the noise was unbelievable. You could hear every car pass and people on the streets all night and we were on the 11th floor.  There was no movie rental for the TV, no booze for the mini fridge and the restaurant that provides the room service gets terrible reviews.
I'd like to give this place a higher rating but I don't feel it really deserves one. My recommendation would be to update the interior and put in double pain windows.
    5 stars for location
    3 stars for overall service
1 star for my restful nights sleep

If you and your family like being pressured, repeatedly, on your vacation, in the "fancy" expensive hotel you paid for, to spend a morning in a meeting room learning about how awesome time shares are then have I got the hotel for you!  If timeshares are so awesome, why are they so hard to sell?  I recommend staying elsewhere and downloading the South Park episode about time shares instead.

The hotel was nice enough, but my main problem was the noise from the drunken people out in front of Ruby Skye until well past 3am. Even with the windows all closed the noise was very intrusive. There's really nothing like listening to some dude do a Borat impression out on the street all night long. If I were to go back I'd definitely ask for a room that wasn't facing Mason St.

This was my first visit to this establishment and I was rather happy with my overnight stay. I wish I had gotten the name of the desk clerk last night because he was super friendly and had me in stitches. I had asked if it was Karaoke night and his response cracked me up. I will leave it at that!!
The room was very nice and modernly decorated. I have never stayed in a hotel that has a tv built into the bathroom mirror!! I didn't personally use it but was impressed with something that cool.
Here is my only complaint; we were given a late check out so we were in no hurry to set an early alarm. We stayed in room 515 and the noise level was annoying. By 7:30 am I could here carts with dishes going up and down the hallway, doors slamming closed, several spanish speaking persons chatting it up. I opened my eyes several times to see if there was someone in my room thats how close the noise sounded. I think this room must be near the service area because it never quieted down.
I am returning on Sunday for another overnight visit. This next time around and I am going to mention that we would prefer a room opposite end of the service area. I can't fault them for doing their jobs.

The Donatello is in a great downtown SF location, really close to Union Square and walking distance to lots of outstanding restaurants.  The hotel has a small gym on the top floor along with a hot tub and lounge area.  The rooms are quite large.  The king size bed doesn't even take up a fourth of the total room space and there's a large L-shaped sofa in the room as well.  The room has a microwave and refrigerator, just in case you have left overs or something like that, though you really are staying here to enjoy the nearby restaurants and shopping.

The staff of Club Donatello was amazing. I rented out the terrace room for a birthday party and I was blown away by the service and the overall experience. The valet helped me unload everything (and it was a lot) from my car to bring directly to the 5th floor terrace room. The room was perfect for a surprise party. Double doors that lead to the room, a kitchen with a fridge and sink, personal restrooms, etc.

Every person I dealt with from the managers to the valet to the front desk was beyond helpful and accommodating. Not to mention the location is perfect. It's just a block from the center of Union Square so there are garages all over the place.

Great service from start to finish. Highly recommended.

This hotel was a lot nicer than I expected.  I stayed here for a business trip and was initially bummed that I couldn't get a room at a Hilton or Hyatt.  When I first arrived I was kind of put off by the location(on the border of Union Square and the Tenderloin, right across from Ruby Skye) and the building itself looked rather old.  Even the lobby and the hallways have an old look to them but the rooms themselves were HUGE!  You can tell that each of the rooms was remodeled somewhat recently since the furniture and TV are very modern.  As someone who travels a lot and tries to eat relatively healthy/cheaply, I liked that the room had a mini fridge, microwave, and wet bar with extra plates/wine glasses/ etc(not all hotels even have a mini fridge).  Something mildly interesting was that there was a TV built into the mirror in the bathroom.

Although it is super close to Union Square and about a 5 minute walk from Powell St Bart station, my biggest complaint about this hotel would probably just be the location.  I went out to dinner a few times in the city and felt a bit uncomfortable walking around here at night, but I think as long as you're back before 9 there's still a lot of people walking around and it's not super sketchy yet.

Bottom line, I wouldn't mind staying here again.  Although a tad rough, the location is very convenient and the price is very reasonable for SF and how close you actually are to Union Square.

This review is for their Theatre Parking service!

Thank goodness in all the rip-off garages around Theatre Row, The Donatello offers $10-cash only, Theatre parking

Only like 1 block away, Donatello provides friendly & quick valet service - we try to use them every time we come down for a Play

Only once has their lot been full & we were scrambling for another garage - but can safely say this is a reliable & safe place to leave your car while you enjoy dinner & a show

I booked a room for two nights for my wife's birthday, the Yelp reviews looked good, and my wife wanted to stay near Union Square to shop.
We drove into the covered garage and went into the hotel to check in without a hitch.  Then the check-in person ushered us over to a slick concierge man.  We thought that this was a little different, and boy were we right.  The slick (almost sleazy) concierge fast talked us into sitting down for a time-share meeting the next morning in the hotel meeting room, and he said that we would get 2 nights free vacation stay at one of their properties (and they insisted "no black out periods").
We arrived at the meeting an they had a disgusting breakfast, and a more disgusting salesman who wasted our time.  WE sucked it up and finished the hard pressing sales pitch and then asked for our 2 night stay coupon.
After we left, we looked at the document for the 2 night stay and found out that it was almost impossible to book the room due to all the blackouts and rules.
The hotel management shoud be embarrassed by this sales berhavior, but I am sure they are all related, getiing a cut of the action!
Don't stay here unless you want to be hit on by these sales people, and if you stay here accept the offer to go to the sales meeting and DO NOT SHOW UP!

If I have to summarize this hotel in one word it would be: UNORGANIZED! Maybe I'm a little jaded because I had such high expectations (and had read some great reviews) and was disappointed from the very beginning. This hotel has some good qualities, but a few minor improvements here and there could make it a lot better.

Proximity to Union Square/within walking distance to many shops/ restaurants/ Bart/ Cable Cars.
The lounge upstairs has some pretty nice views.

They have wi-fi but it was tough getting it to work and stay working.

The maid just walked in without announcing herself loud enough for us to hear! It was relatively early in the morning and I thought we had put out a do not disturb sign to keep this exact thing from happening!

Outdated and ugly rooms, bad color scheme, maintenance issues in rooms

They make you sign in each time you come up to the lounge. Kind of weird if you ask me. Why not just require key card access like every other hotel?

The spa/jacuzzi was undergoing repair while we were there and it didn't look like they were exactly hurrying to finish.

Overall I liked the hotel and it was very clean and the staff were nice and helpful. They get three stars because I had two rooms after staying 4 days and both rooms would only go down to 72 degrees and I disagree with charging guest for parking even if they are not driving or leaving their car at the hotel. I also thought they should have provided a snack bar as well.

This is the perfect place to stay when visiting San Francisco.  I'm a "local" (about an hour outside the city) but had two relatives come for a visit.  My sister booked this hotel, and it was an amazing location - right off of Union Square.  The staff is terrific(especially Joe) and took great care of us, recommending places to go, etc.

The room was immaculate and my sister and aunt enjoyed the hot tub upstairs.  As three women traveling together, it was great to feel so safe right in the heart of the city.

I would definitely recommend this as the perfect place to stay in San Francisco.  You can catch the Cable Car just up the street, and they will help you get anywhere else you want to go.  I agree there is street noise, but when you stay in the center of the city, what do you expect?   Lots of great restaurants right around the hotel, and we easily walked to Chinatown one night for dinner as well.

Yet another excellent timeshare stay from start to finish!  Easily found it on Post and Mason St.  Pulled up to the valet.  Checked in and was greeted immediately by the front desk.  I forgot the guy's name, but he was very helpful. Picked up the keys, was given more information about our stay, and I was on my way!

We had a room on the 7th floor, and the only complaint was the street noise and thin walls.  But we were warned of it, and not to mention that the only other available room was facing Ruby Skye nightclub.  Also, its downtown SF, so high noise level expected.

Okay, so back to the room description.  I was very impressed.  A fairly high ceiling, larger than your average room, and more space than anticipated.  Upon entering, you're provided with a closet (and clean white robes), dresser drawers, and a shoe bench.  The bathroom was clean and had a remote.  Remote for what you ask?  Well, the built in LCD monitor in the mirror of course.  See pic!  Only basic television though, so kinda useless.  At least the shower head was detachable and flexible.

We also had a microwave, a modern mini-sink, and fridge.  Almost a kitchenette, only without a stove.  So I guess it's considered a wet-bar if anything.  There was a 50' LCD flat-screen with cable.  An office workstation, and free wi-fi.  A comfortable king-sized bed with clean sheets and soft pillows.  A cool leather sofa-sleeper with extra bedding in the closet.  Man, I tell ya, this place was so worth it!

Outside our room, we're provided access to the Club Lounge on the top floor.  Up here they brew Peet's coffee for free.  More couches and tables for you to just lounge and relax, read, or watch TV.  Patio chairs out on the balcony to enjoy your coffee, and enjoy the weather.  As far as the balcony view, it was OK.  Nothing scenic or spectacular, just a lot of buildings.  The concierge desk was helpful; The guy there was informative about restaurants and touristy spots.

The Fitness Center was kinda small, but good enough.  It provided:  Two treadmills, two exercise bikes, a few dumbbells, and weight machines.  The locker room seemed pretty clean as well.  The sink area even had items for shaving, now that's a plus!  And with plenty of clean towels provided, I spent my last morning relaxing in the spa and then in the sauna.  Score!

On a side note, I also had issues with my key card.  Again, I was given excellent service from the front desk, as they re-keyed my card with no issue.  What a perfect staycation in the city!  Loved it, and won't hesitate booking here again!

I was absolutely shocked by how nice
Our room was. We stayed on the 8th floor with a city view. The view was nothing special really but the room was spacious well laid out and very clean. Queen size bed with a full couch television, fridge and microwave.

I booked the room thru AAA and got a great deal 150 a night. I was blown away. If I had to pay 300 a night i might feel differently.

The location is great, 5 minute walk to union square, parking is reasonable at 27 a night and the staff is friendly.

The bathroom had a TV in the mirror but no fan.
Street noise is a little much
Club lounge not very appealing but free coffee.

    Would definitely stay here again.

The location is perfect but beware, if you are not a timeshare owner you will get their least desirable rooms.  If you've book and prepaid like I did, insist on the room you booked.  Also, if you're not a timeshare owner - get ready to do your own housekeeping.  I had to fight with the front desk to get clean towels.

It was my first time in San Francisco (had a blast) and not my last.  It is however the LAST time I stay at The Donatello.  The Hilton, the Marriott, the Nikko and even Parc 55 were all recommended to me and I'm sorry I didn't book with them.. I sure will next time.

Note to management - it would be wise for you to WARN your guests at check in that we have to recycle towels.  It's disgusting but at least it won't be a surprise.

Nice place to stay if you are in San Francisco
The room was clean and spacious
    Bed was real comfortable
The shower was slightly broken but the best part is there is a tv in the bathroom really cool in the mirror
The hotel staff was nice friendly and polite
The only down was our room was not ready when we arrive and they try to charge us $50 hold few per night
