The Orchard Hotel in San Francisco, CA

A green hotel near Union Square in downtown San Francisco, California, the Orchard Hotel is a luxury boutique hotel with outstanding service and an incomparable location.

Established in 2000.

Born Chu Ya-Tzen in Shanghai, China, in 1923, she's led quite a fascinating life with significant highs and lows.  Mrs. Huang purchased a San Francisco hotel and a vacant piece of land near Union Square. They wished for their Stanford and Chicago-educated daughter, Lydia, to develop the site into a hotel and manage both properties. Lydia would never have the chance. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1990 and fell into a coma in 1993. While keeping a watchful eye over their daughter in Singapore, Mr. Huang himself became very ill. Mrs. Huang sent her husband home to rest in Perth while she cared for Lydia in the United States. Mr. Huang died of cancer in 1993, just three years before Lydia lost her battle with brain cancer in 1996 at the age of 38. After two years of mourning, the devastated Mrs. Huang set out to make her husband and daughter's dreams come to fruition. She develop the brand new Eco-Friendly LEED Orchard Hotels on Bush Street in memory of her family.

This hotel is amazing!  It's a boutique hotel so you get top notch service and attention to detail.  The rooms are fairly new and very clean!  All of the products by Aveda are great and the complimentary breakfast is perfect.  They offer free DVD's to borrow at the front desk with huge tv's and surround sound in each room!  I will definitely stay here anytime I need a hotel in San francisco!

four stars only after twenty year rule .. but this is a beautiful hidden gem, slightly less than union square big hotels and three times the hotel accomodations, and amenties... lovers, out of town best friends, gift stays, out of your house this weekend thang ...  a place your mother-in-law does not deserve to stay in and kept in the dark about!

My favorite place to stay in SF!  We've been going here for years.  This boutique hotel is centrally located to Union Square and Chinatown, making it a great base for tourists.  They have nice, good sized rooms with DVD players and a cool CD with relaxing music for your enjoyment.  You can also rent DVDs at the reception desk during your stay.  The staff are helpful and accomodating. They have a nice restaurant and bar downstairs.  Breakfast is included with your stay. We always enjoy going back and tell everyone who comes to SF about this place.

I used to stay here for three weeks stints.  Always enjoyed my stays, as I was in Union Square and had plenty to walk to.  The rooms were all freshly re-modeled and the staff was very pleasant.  The bar had no nightlife at all however, which was a bummer and the restaurant is very expensive, but I would make up for it by really doing a number on their breakfast bar in the morning!  :)  For the price, this is a great place to recommend.

A good decent hotel with a great location right next to Union Square and Grant Street - Chinatown. Also, its a block away from the Sutter Street Garage, which has the best prices for overnight parking (the bill came to $16). Complimentary buffet breakfast in the morning - with the usual continental breakfast items - but no hot food. The rooms are non-smoking, comfortable, with DSL and cable. No late night muchies here - room services is provided with limited hours - ends at 10 pm.

Excellent hotel. Hosted a group of colleagues here for a 3-day meeting and they continue to rave about it. Beautifully appointed rooms, great location, and a very sweet and sexy sales staff. We are returning in April and will try out the new sister property, the Orchard Garden. Tres bien!

We are four adults traveling together and I really like this hotel.  Since there are four of us, we got the king suite.  Very big, very nicely decorated and room for all of us!  The woman who checked us in was not that friendly, which was too bad, since she was the first impression we got.  However, everyone else has been great.  There was some confusion over our reservation - I told them we were four people, but they said our reservation was only for two, so we needed to pay more.  I said whatever they needed to do, but I was completely honest with them when I made the reservation.  And, like I told them, we all came in together, we all stood and checked in together, so we were not hiding it.  The man I spoke to at the front desk was incredibly nice and very helpful.  Then, he said he would just waive the fee because of the mix-up.  Excellent service by him!  Doormen were very nice, great getting cabs, etc.  The location is great!!  Near Chinatown, near Union Square, walking distance of a lot.  This place really exceeded my expectations.  Oh, here are my only complaints - the windows looking out are filthy!  It's crazy!  Strange.  And, yes, the hot water doesn't get too hot.  Probably a safety thing so people don't scald themselves.

This hotel is great.  Reasonable price, very clean, and certified green.  The staff was friendly and helpful. Great location, walking distance to many areas.  The hotel restaurant was also pretty good. They also have 100 plus dvd to check out for a night in.

I have recommended this hotel for years - a boutique experience right above Union Square.  Steps from the cable car, but quiet, spacious rooms that are well-appointed.  The staff is courteous and accommodating - I've sent honeymooners and business colleagues here and everyone has enjoyed the location and service.

Very cute boutique hotel. Great service. Stayed there several times pre-yelp. It is a small hotel and there is one bellman who pretty much does everything. He is great and will really take care of you. If you like intimate hotels with personal service this is the place for you. The beds are luxurious and comfortable. Very nice down comforters. Very clean. Clean bathrooms. A pleasant surprise very near Union Square.

I got a great internet rate here, so it definitely added to my satisfaction. Park at the Sutter/Stockton garage and walk up. From there, you can get to anywhere in the city by foot, taxi, muni. The location is two blocks off Union Square. The rooms are very nice. I plan on booking again in the near future. I will say no more, as I want this to stay a somewhat undiscovered gem! (Uh-oh, well then, don't read this!)

I booked this hotel after researching extensively for an affordable hotel in a great area of San Francisco.  This hotel is a great bargain!  All the other hotels in this area (Union Square) are much more and i can't image that they are any nicer.  This hotel is in a great area, close to the BART, cable car, restaurants, and bars.  The rooms were VERY clean and the bed was super comfy.  The rooms were really good sized and so were the bathrooms.  The only problem we had with the bathroom was that the drain in the shower wouldn't stay up by itself so we had to prop it open, however, when we informed staff on the way out they were right on top of it.  Speaking of the staff, all staff we had an encounter with were incredibly friendly and helpful!!  Some advice on the parking...the hotel charged $45 to park overnight and a block down you can park your car in a garage for $22, so do that!  I was very  happy with this hotel and would stay there again in an instant!!

I was pleasantly surprised by this small boutique hotel  off union square. Fully renovated rooms which were clean, modern. Free movies. The hotel served a free continental Breakfast daily. Free internet access. Although we did not eat in Vignette restaraunt on the premieses we did order room service:
2 chocolate mint organic teas
1 Icecream sundae with pistachios and whip cream.
2 robes and slippers
eating on the bed
equals decadence.

Wonderful staff and service in a modern, convenient hotel. Nice size and  you never have to wait for the elevators, or feel it's crowded.   It's on the cable car line, and close to Union Square and Chinatown.  Free reliable wifi and newspaper every day.  I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to San Francisco.

I stayed here for a night with a friend and we took advantage of their April Fool's Deal where our room was only $1.16. For a hotel that's smack in the middle of an awesome shopping area, I really don't have much to complain about except for the fact they didn't give us the two beds in our room that we asked for. Other than that, we had a great looking room, comfortable bed, and free Wi-Fi. The staff was friendly and apologetic about the room mixup. I wish I could stay here again, but I'll probably only go here if I can get a cheap price.

Everything we could want for the price!

My husband and I were vacationing in San Francisco and thought the Orchard Hotel is perfectly located for travelers, right on the cable car line and near Union Square.  We got a good deal for booking three nights, and we couldn't have been happier with our stay here.  Everything was clean and fresh. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was super cozy.  The staff was friendly and welcoming. Parking is available nearby and priced appropriately for the area.

We would definitely stay here again!

This is a very average looking spot from out of view, but if you want a great garden roof spot to have a drink in downtown SF, its a great spot in the city. Order your drink in the bar, take the left side elevator to the roof, and you are on. Enjoy.

I loved this hotel! I normally research all my stays and visits like crazy and I had heard great reviews about this place. Let me just start by saying that this place did not disappoint us. And... at $105/night on a spring break weekend, we couldn't beat that!
This hotel is clean, beautiful, and convenient.
My husband and I stayed here for our 3 year anniversary. It was awesome! Having never stayed in the city, I wanted to make the best of our 4 day stay by seeing as much as I could.
The location could  not have been better. We were about a 5 minute walk from Union Square and Chinatown. If we wanted to go anywhere further, we just hopped on the cable car located right on the corner.
The staff here was helpful, nice and professional. They engaged in conversation with us as if they knew us. So sweet! They were able to help us find phenomenal restaurants and steered us away from where not to go! I high recommend this wonderful hotel!
I really do not have one bad thing to say about the Orchard.

The Orchard was great:  a wonderful location right on the cable car line, surprisingly large and well-kept rooms, and an enthusiastic and friendly staff - I was greeted every morning by name.

The restaurant downstairs has good food, but not great, and the bar closes disappointingly early.  Skip the continental breakfast - it's good for a cup of coffee in the morning, but that's about it.

Love, love, loved the bathrooms and the big comfy beds!  Not really sure why I loved the bathroom so much.  I guess because it was huge.  Also, I loved the faucet on the sink and I loved the big shower with the clear glass door.

The bed was super comfy and soft and so were the plush pillows.

The service was great.  Very courteous.  I highly recommend the Orchard!

I am going to whine.

The full moon was at it's brightest last night and though it sounds cliche- that thing effects me strongly, every single month, and it was the absolute worst yesterday. I'd been having a pretty awful time with feelings akin to those of the worst PMS one can imagine. Being a hotel addict- what better way to remedy my foul mood and unpleasant experience at home (recently moldy, rain-soaked carpet/leaky windows neglected by landlord in hallway, endlessly practicing musicians shaking the walls at all hours, etc) than to book a nice room with a huge cozy bed and pretend to be on vacation with my boyfriend? My broke ass got a great deal at the Orchard and since it had really good Yelp reviews I went for it.
Fast forward to one hour later, standing in the lobby, soaked from yet another heavy rain deluge, and we are told that although we chose "King" bed from the pulldown menu- we could only get 2 *twin* beds. Of course we couldn't be refunded because we booked through hotels.com . No mention of working something else out for us.
So we trudged upstairs to our sad, dark room with windows facing a bright light and a wall and tried to make due with what we had, my romantic notions crumbling. Tried to take a bath. There were tons of little black flakes filling the tub that resembled charcoal. The water wouldn't stop draining slowly. Tried to settle in and watch TV. The reception was awful. Tried to watch a DVD- the DVD player wouldn't sync to the TV.
All I wanted was a big fluffy bed, a hot bath, and some TV and I got nothing. We went out to get drunk and forget the money we just wasted and seriously considered offering a homeless dude our room key and just going back to our own apartment.

Pros: Very clean, and the beds were comfortable. Even though my boyfriend was several feet away in another bed.

Cons: Sigh.

I do a fair amount of business travel, and I really loved this hotel. There was none of that desolate, lonely feeling that you get from a lot of the chains.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, the beds had digital thermostats and big, squishy comforters and pillows. There is a DVD player in your room and the front desk has DVDs you can borrow for free.

Not to be missed: the crazily soft bathrobes in the closet. Man, I loved lounging around in that thing.

As a business traveler, I felt the desk area could have had more electrical outlets; I had things charging all over the room. I hope I didn't forget any of them. Also, I had some minor trouble with the free wi-fi, though my company-issued laptop may have been at fault, and I always got connected in the end.

Oh, and the mini-bar was so crowded with hideously expensive ($2.50 for a can of soda!) stuff that I could barely fit in my leftovers from dinner.

Still, this is the hotel I'll be staying when in SF on someone else's dime.

This is one of the businesses I wish I could give an extra half a star to... I can't justify giving it 5 stars, but definitely much better than just a plain 4 stars.

I spent two nights at the Whitcomb hotel, and this was a DEFINITE upgrade.  The Orchard Hotel is beautiful.  It is very unassuming from the outside, but as soon as you step inside, you know this place is going to be nice.

It is a small hotel, but that's part of the charm.  My room wasn't huge, but it was the perfect size, and it was so cozy.  The bed was amazing - I slept so well, not to mention I didn't hear ANY street noise the entire night - a first for me when staying in San Francisco.  All of the staff is EXTREMELY FRIENDLY, even the housekeeping staff.

Another big plus is that this hotel is just steps from all the action in Union Square - walking distance from the street shops and the wonderful Westfield Mall!

The next time I find myself back in San Francisco, I'm booking a room at the Orchard without a second thought!

A very comfortable hotel.
- very quiet (our room was on the 6th floor on the alley side). The ventilation and plumbing, while noticeable, is quieter than other hotels I've stayed in. I never heard the neighbors.
- the lobby, elevator, and room is lovely. The bed is so fluffy and white, I was reluctant to place anything on it. The room does indeed look "serene".
- free DVD rentals, thick cotton bathrobes, a DVD in the room called "Deep Sleep 101", wine glasses,...these are nice touches.
- I appreciate the retractable clothesline in the bathroom.
- staff is friendly and helpful
- free wireless!

My only critique is that they could work a little harder at being "green". The faucets work only in Flood Mode. In the age of water restriction, they need to convert to low-flow.  We tried to re-use our towels but were stymied by the maintenance staff who whisked them away even when we did hang them on the rack. A bin in the room for recyclables would be nice. But these are fairly easy fixes for a hotel that definitely has figured out how to please the customer.

Clean, not over the top, excellent location. (2 easy blocks to Union Square).   Park at Sutter/Stockton garbage and don't valet.  ($18 rather $40).  4/5 stars because we need to change rooms because the first one was right next elevator after was asked not to be by the elevator.

I was in San Francisco on business and chose to stay at the Orchard because from looking at their web site and reading reviews it looked like a very nice hotel in the right part of town. Right in the sense that it was close to where I needed to be for work-related activities. I was right on both counts.

The room was very clean and there was very little noise. I didn't spend much time in the hotel (other than to sleep) and didn't take advantage of what amenities they offer, so I can't really speak to them. They do have WiFi and if you want to access the internet I recommend you bring a WiFi enabled laptop since they only have one computer on the premises available for use by guests: a laptop at the front desk. WTF?!

It is very accesible by public transportation. There are MUNI bus lines that are just a block away going to and from the financial district. There is also a trolley that runs right past the hotel on Powell street. It is a five block walk from the closest BART station (Powell Street).

I stayed here last night with the bf after the worst "hotel" experience I've ever had in my life at the Grant's Plaza (see my review to understand my terror).  The bed was huge and comfy, the sheets were soft and crisp, the bathroom was clean, and I slept nicely.  Valet was $40 bucks which is a bit steep, but you can leave your car there all night and day til 6pm.  For $160 (with tax & fees) on a Memorial Day weekend with no reservations the place was great.  Would def stay again.

Excellent stay here and not a single problem. I'd say this ranks as one of the best values in the city for a hotel (At least when I stayed).

Quick summary:

-Top quality for a low price.
-Large comfortable beds with a huge amount of pillows and cushions.
-Nice quality wooden desks and furniture.
-Nice large bathrooms.
-Excellent attention to detail. My desk was filled with books on San Francisco, and even included things such as a book on sleeping better as well as a CD to listen to.
-Excellent and friendly staff at front desk. I walked up Powell Street on a warm day with luggage in tow and as soon as I entered the manager came running over to me with a glass of ice water that I never even asked for. They had me checked-in and ready to head up in about 40 seconds. Check out was instantaneous.
-Helpful doormen.
-Good location to get to everything. Keep in mind though it's at the top of Powell St. which is steep and long, so if you have a lot of luggage you might just take a taxi or try and get on the Cable car.

I'll be using this place the next time in San Fran. I really don't see how it's going to get much better for the money to be honest. I've stayed in hotels in all major cities in the U.S. and this is up there. Not a 5 star place but a solid 3.5.

One bad thing: The hotel restaurant while pleasant looking and serving reasonably good food has awful service that is on par with a fast food restaurant. Someone needs to make changes because the staff is killing this place. Additionally prices either need to come down a bit or food portions need to go up a bit.

What a jem of a hotel.  Close to shopping, Chinatown, coffee shops and some decent restaurants.  The staff was kind and helpful...no concierge to speak of, but a desk staff willing to go the extra mile to get the information you seek.  Our room was clean and well appointed.  The bathroom was spacious and had all those things i find important...lots of hot water, good water pressure, a bathtub that drains, thick towels and one of those little mirrors attached to the wall so you can see the back of your head.

Love this hotel. The room is suprisingly big (for San Francisco). The room was very clean and the furnishings had a welcoming feel to it. I was traveling for business and found this hotel to be moderately price (for SF) and in a great location. I have returned to this hotel and will continue to do so. They have free WiFi and they are green. The valet parking is a bit pricey ($40), but you are in the big city.......so you expect to pay an arm and a leg for parking.

It isn't the greatest hotel, but it is perfect in location, amenities and price.  Service is top notch, rooms are above average with nice finishings and very comfortable.  No flat screen TVs, but free wireless throughout the hotel.  Bar is nice, not super big.  Restaurant for hot breakfast is great, but a little pricey.  Will definitely return.  Steps from the cable car.  Not as opulent as the "Mark" but much better than any Hyatt or Hilton.

A friend of mine stayed here while she was in town visiting. As I helped her up to her room, I got a good glimpse of this boutique hotel and it is so cute, clean, green conscious and the front staff were friendly. The rooms were big, the bathrooms spacious and the hotel even had an in house restaurant that stays open late--- everything you could ask for from a good hotel. PLUS, the location is fantastic-- close to Union Square and in a relatively safe neighborhood of the city!

I think my friend paid around $100 for the night, which sounds like a steal to me given the place was so nice.

Orchard Hotel is definitely a place I'll be recommending to out of town visitors!

I have stayed at The Orchard many times over the past 5 years (many = probably close to 100).  I must say that with the new ownership it's gone a little downhill. But that's not to say that it isn't still a fabulous boutique hotel. In fact, I think the beds are the most comfortable that I've ever stayed in.

I used to get personalized welcome notes at check-in (and, years ago, get wine and fruit plates in my room). No longer.

The shampoos that they give you now are not quite to par, there now is only 1 soap given (hello, needs for hands and body!). The plush bathrobes are still in the closet - yay!

No longer is a complimentary continental breakfast served (or maybe it only is during the week and not on weekends). Also, the wireless Internet connection in any part of the hotel (including the lobby) is either Low or Very Low. This has been consistent over the past few years. Ask for the cable to plug into the wall at your desk if you're going to be using your laptop.

Also ask for a high level room or one in the back of the hotel. The hotel is located at Bush and Powell which means you are hearing the cable cars until midnight and stating early in the morning.

Overnight parking is $40 - not to be surprised at since this is San Francisco.

Union Square is within walking distance - do not underestimate the big hill on the way back (going uphill when returning from Union Square).

Free DVD rentals from their collection at the front desk (maybe about 100 to choose from).

Overall I will continue to stay at The Orchard. I just wish some more of the personalization that made it a great boutique hotel would return. At least the comfy beds are still there......

Really enjoyed our stay. I almost don't want to give it a good review, because I don't want it to get too popular and raise its rates! But it was just a great place to stay and I want to give them their due. Our room was large and attractive. The staff were fabulous- friendly and informative. Great value at this hotel. It was $140 for a single room but I could've easily gotten it at around a $100 through hotels.com or similar site but didn't, ohpoo. But I liked the cleanliness, quiet environment (except for this couple gettin' it on next door when I was staying in with my gf), and the quality of the room for the price I paid for (especially the 5 star like bathrooms... what's with my fascination w/ bathrooms?)  Anyways, the only problem may be parking but downtown is down the hill and there's a a few fun bars down the block like Tunnel Top.

Forget the fact that I got a room here for 3 days free.

This place was just magnificent (HAHAH! I always wanted to use that word)!!!

The room, though a bit small, was stil very elegant and nicely decorated. The bed was like a sea of softness, swallowing my body and making sweet music with my joints and muscles. No seriously, I was like butter on mash potatoes the way the bed was playing with my emotions.

The staff was GREAT! Any questions or requests I had, they answered it promptly and with no trace of attitude. And even thru the bustle of downtown SF, it was very quiet and comfortable.

Didn't get a chance to try the resaurant, but a lot of places to eat nearby, plus the group I was with were out of towners and wanted to go club'n instead and hitting a all night Jack's later. hahaha.

One of the best 3 nightsof my life. All it needed was for Scarlett Johannson (or Jessica Beal..or even that one Yelp Elite girl ahha.) to walk through my door with a plate stacked with waffles and yes. I woulda been in HEAVEN!

Truly a great bang for the buck!

This hotel was soooo clean. The room was huge (by SF standards) and the staff was super nice. The bathroom was large, with great lighting. The bed provided excellent comfy-ness. If there was a drawback, it would be the lack of lobby. However, I don't generally go to hotels to hang out with everyone in a lobby. Its location easily makes up for that. In our case it was only two blocks to stumble back from our gastro-fabulous, highly wine-indulgent meal. We would easily stay here again!

Could the location be more perfect? Google maps seemed to indicate not...so I booked. My previous homework turned up that this was the sister hotel to younger Orchard Garden...both über green!

Since my guest was incredibly sensitive to (obsessively concerned with) chemicals in materials and cleaning stuff, the green commendations seemed to indicate this was a good fit. Being the skeptic as I am from time to time, I never let her on to the green certifications. Her toxicity radar never so much
as blipped! She praised every amenity from sheets to shampoo.

My stay was lovely. The staff was helpful and friendly, caring to those little details that one only seem to find at a boutique hotel.

Update: I recently tried to book a second time at the Orchard, but was told they were full up during my visit. They did however, have an opening up the street at "The Orchard Garden" which turned out to be cool!

The Orchard Garden didn't have the groovy roof-top patio of the The Orchard, but the rooms at the Orchard Garden seemed a bit more...what's the word...neatly adorned? My room had this beautiful giant vase atop the mini bar. I was told the Garden is newer, though both hotels are very bright and modern I wouldn't have known.

Also worth noting that although the Garden is "new" construction wise, I was really surprised at the lack of any nasty off-gassing from rugs and stairwells and the like whatsoever. You know that sort of off-ish smell in stair-wells in buildings? The only way I can think to describe the smell is rubbery -- anyway it didn't smell like that! I mentioned it to the reception guy who explained they used different concrete and other "green" bits, hence the lack of chemically smelling funk. Right on, Orchard.

I will certainly stay here again if they promise to put better lighting in the exercise room! This is a great location 2 blocks off union square. It is also 1 block from the Stockton Sutter garage if you want to save on valet parking. The parking is $40 which is lower than most SF hotels in the area. We paid $127 a night through the hotel website. It is an older hotel that has been remodeled using Green materials and methods. They did a great job! Comfy rooms and free internet. The bell staff was very helpful and anticipated all our needs. Breakfast was good, but pricey, at the Daffodil restaurant attached to the lobby. The lighting in the workout room was the only thing needing improvement. This will be my first choice in the future.

I got lucky and found this hotel on Expedia for $85.  I live in the Bay Area but wanted to spend the evening in the city after making the rounds at holiday parties.

For a hotel of this quality you can't beat the $85 rate for a Thursday night.  Very nice lobby, professional staff, beautiful clean room, comfortable bed, good location right between Union Square and Nob Hill.  Only negative was an infernally loud garbage truck at 4:00 AM.

This hotel is very, very good.  I'll stay here again if I can get a similar rate.

The hotel is clean. Good location if you're planning on shopping only. Hotel has NO PARKING!!!! $45 valet parking over night $$$$. The hotel staff, specifically the ones we were check in with were rude and werent as helpful, as soon as we mentioned we had a gift certificate they refused to serve us the same as every other guest. I rather pay more and stay somewhere else than get treated this way.

Originally had reservations for the Orchard Garden Hotel, but I got a call from them the day we were to check in saying that a party had extended their stay and that they were full, but would we mind staying at the Orchard Hotel instead?

Heck no! The rooms here seem to be even nicer. "Deluxe" rather than "Standard," at least by the clerk's terminology. Also, I got a great price for the room 'cause of the mixup. Can't be beat.

Lovely bed, decent not-small-not-huge room, with a VERY nicely spacious bathroom and a huge glassed-in shower! The bathroom was beautiful.

Our room had a decent view of Nob Hill - nothing special but a lovely characteristic view of that part of the city. It's in a heck of a neighborhood and close to just about everything in that part of the city.

I actually parked at the Sutter-Stockton municipal garage; oh-so-slightly cheaper and I am familiar with that part of town so I liked the flexibility.

Nice little boutique hotel at a surprisingly good rate.  Stayed for 3 days in September and because this hotel was significantly less (though still not cheap) than the usual places I stay (Westins, Marriotts, Kimptons, etc) my expectations were low.  But it was clean, quiet (for San Francisco) and even had robes and turn-down service.  It was walking distance to almost everything we wanted to see and so centrally located we didn't need to rent a car or even hire a taxi  because public transportation was so easy to access (that's more SF than the hotel).  I saw on yelp that the associated restaurant was no good, but there were restaurants everywhere nearby, so it wasn't an issue -- but there was no one ever there. There was not much of a view from our room, but we weren't in SF to hang out in the room.  And there was free wifi and it was eco-friendly.  I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to my friends.

I was up here for work a few weeks ago and stayed at the Orchard Hotel and was very pleased.  I am writing this mostly because I tend to only write reviews when I am unsatisfied but wanted to give credit to the Orchard for getting it right.  The bed was soft and comfy, room was spacious enough and clean, the internet was free, location was ideal, and the people were just plain nice and accommodating.  Even though my room was paid for by work, I thought they were a good value and would come back on my own.  I bought some cheese at the Ferry Building and even though I'd already checked out they offered to help me refrigerate it until I had to leave for the airport.

Overall, I was very happy with my stay and would definitely stay again (or maybe I'll check out their sister property ther Orchard Garden Hotel?)

Very refreshing.  Nice, comfortable smaller hotel.  Would definitely stay there again.  I did not find my room to be small as others have commented.  Enjoyed the free Wifi, often an additional charge at other hotels.  TV was old  analog; my only complaint.  Very friendly and accommodating staff.

This place is as good as it gets in the moderately-priced-hotels bracket.

Room: huge
Bathroom: large and well equipped
Beds: good
WiFi: free
Staff: pleasant
Location: SO handy for tourists
Fitness Center: you couldn't call it a Center, it's  a room with one treadmill, one elliptical and a tv!

Be warned that this location is up a hill in case you have bad knees, but you can get the Powell St cable car to the corner of the block :)

The valet parking is a bit annoying because it takes aaaaaaaages to get your car, but that was really my only gripe.

There are some cool little restaurants, pubs and bars around the hotel as well which are a little bit off the typical tourist track. Try the Hidden Vine wine bar, Bacchus Kirk bar, The Irish Bank, and the Belden Place area for restaurants.

Outstanding location, comfortable beds and nice rooms near Union Station. My wife and I loved being able to step off the cable car after a long day and walk 1/4 block to the hotel entrance.

Staff was courteous and attentive. Their water heater broke one morning while we were there and they comp'd us breakfast while the mechanic fixed it up.

Recently spent 5 delightful nights here. Totally agree with all others that this location is great, staff is friendly and helpful. Rooms and beds are comfortable, quiet hotel, would stay here again. My only quibble is with mini bar ( how 1990s). All of the items can be purchased 4 doors down Bush St at the deli/minimart or 1 block up Powell at least  for 1/3 the cost. We had a wonderful King size bed, my wife would have recommended a fitted sheet for the bottom., so the sheets would stay in place.

Excellent hotel. The room, while a bit on the small side, was expected in a city of this size. The location was perfect, walking distance to Chinatown, Union square and the Financial District. The staff was extremely friendly. The doorman (David) was very personable, giving us directions and recommendations. The front desk lady very helpful and friendly (forgive me, I cannot remember her name.)

The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom bigger than expected, and they even have movies at the front desk that you can borrow to watch in your room!

I am counting the days to our next trip to San Francisco and our stay at the Orchard Hotel!

We absolutely loved this hotel!  Very good reasonable rates and the location was perfect.  Union Square was 2 blocks behind us down the hill as well as Sear's Fine Food and Lori's Diner.  There were some really cool bars that we stopped in.  The cable car stopped right on the corner.  Uncle Vito's Pizza was across the street and on the corner.  We had a blast walking at night and taking pictures and videos of the sights and sounds of SF.  We got to know the clerk at a liquor store down the street because we would stop in every night for Calistoga Water which I couldn't get enough of.

The staff at the Orchard Hotel were so nice and accommodating.  From the first day every time we stepped off the elevator we were greeted by our names and they were always asking us if we had any questions, needed help or directions.

Our room was very clean, nicely decorated and the bed was so soft and comfortable.  Large fluffy pillows covered the bed.  The bathroom was large, clean and had good quality soap, etc.  Housekeeping were very good at cleaning our room.  The also have free WIFI.

I would definitely recommend the Orchard Hotel to anyone going to SF.    The Orchard Hotel is not as good as it gets, but it is pretty close.

We will be staying at the Orchard Hotel on our next visit!

I had to go to San Francisco for work, and wanted to find a place that was near the office (in the financial district), clean, and affordable.  From its reviews, Orchard Hotel seemed to fit this criteria.

It's located in Nob Hill, which means that you'll be walking up a hill pretty much regardless of your direction.  For me this meant walking up Bush Street from Montgomery to (practically) Powell, but it wasn't awful.  If you have a wheelie suitcase, you'll want to stay on the north side of Bush (even numbered size) since the side of Bush that the hotel is on has some stairs at points.

The concierge at all times was really nice, as were the bellhops (though I never needed to use them).  Check-in was a breeze, as was check-out.

The room itself was fine.  The carpeting looked kind of worn, which may have just been the color (a faded blue), and some of the furniture was chipped.  But the bathroom and linens seemed really clean, which is really what matters.  There was basic cable on the TV, so I was able to watch my Monday sitcoms.  There's free wifi, but the signal was really spotty - I would regularly lose connection and eventually just gave up.  Also, the water took a little while to heat up, though it may have been because I was an early riser and was on the 9th floor (out of 10).

Perks - comfy robes, good smelling toiletries (they have glycerin soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion), iron/ironing board which worked well.  They have a mini-fridge/mini-bar where you can put your own stuff in, but it was really packed so I avoided doing that.

Overall, this is a good place to stay.  Not super-luxe or anything, but comfortable and clean.

The Orchard Hotel is a great choice in the Union Square area.  We stayed there in May 2011.  The room was large for SF.  The bed was comfortable and the room was quite clean.  The staff at the hotel was very helpful.

Unfortunately, the hot water was out one morning.  The hotel got it fixed within a couple of hours and they comped our breakfast that morning. So they recovered very well.

The parking garage is expensive, but that seems to be the norm in SF.  It took the valets 15 minutes or so to retrieve your car, so that is a little inconvenient.  But they did tell us that when we first arrived.

All in all, we had a very good stay.  I would definitely stay there again.

The Orchard Hotel gets five stars from us for convenience, cleanliness, and friendliness. The price was very reasonable compared to other properties in the neighborhood--lots of bang for the buck. As others have said, the rooms are large, the bathrooms are spacious, the beds are extremely comfortable, great water pressure and almost immediate hot water at the tap.  The rooms were so well insulated that we were unaware of there being other guests on our floor.  It gave us a feeling of having the whole floor to ourselves.

But what made the experience complete for us was the desk personnel. Everyone was so nice and helpful. A  shout out to Blue, who had the most marvelous restaurant recommendations for us. She never steered us wrong. She was always cheery and shared in our excitement as we related our day's adventures with her. Thanks, darlin'.

If you don't need 40 foot marble columns in the lobby, but appreciate a solid, well-run hotel, check out The Orchard.

good location-  DOUBLE CHECK
conditioner- CHECK
comfy bed- CHECK
cleanliness- CHECK
ample amt of pillows- CHECK
quality blow dryer- CHECK (none of that built into the wall vacuum cleaner looking type crap)
free strong wifi- CHECK (yes, it has to be free)
large non-claustrophobic room- CHECK

the location of the hotel cannot get any better.  it's just right up powell, super close to the BART station and there is a cable car stop right outside of the hotel on bush and powell.

a "lobby" at the orchard is pretty much nonexistent, only a couple of benches and the front desk lined up near the elevator.  i really don't mind because the lobby space is definitely sacrificed for the large roomy guest room and bathroom.

the restroom located behind the lobby is very well kept and clean.

while passing by the lobby to the restrooms i noticed a table filled with a plethora of awards, and one of them being the orchard hotel recognized as a woman owned business.  goooooo girl power :)

i will definitely stay here again.  i highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting sf :)

I traveled to the city for business, and unfortunately I waited until 2 days prior to book a room.  I had a hard time finding affordable places that had rooms available (probably because Outside Lands was happening the next day).   I ended up finding this place through Priceline and paid $322 for one night.  To me that is a shocking price to pay, but I guess that's not unheard of for SF hotels.  Maybe it would have been less pricey if I had booked earlier.

The place was OK.  Strangely, the room had 2 twin beds, but it wasn't that big of a deal since I was traveling alone.  The room had this strange feeling of dampness or mustiness to it, although it didn't smell musty.  Everyone who worked there seemed polite.  I honestly didn't spend much time at the hotel because I checked in at 8:30, then left for dinner with friends and only came back to sleep.  Checked out the next morning at 9am.  Three stars because there was nothing at all that stood out to me about this place, but at least I wasn't afraid that I'd get murdered in the halls.

I was really blown away by this hotel.  It's environmentally friendly, the mattresses were wonderful, the rooms were a good size, the service was impeccable, you can't beat the location, AND it was noticeably cheaper than many of the other local hotels that didn't offer half the amenities.  Little things like providing nice comfy robes and wireless service free of charge really made it very enjoyable.

I was crazy about the location: two short blocks south, and BOOM, there's Union Square Park.  Tons of shopping and restaurants less than a five minute walk away.  Any time I go back to San Fran I am absolutely staying here again.

The Orchard is in a great location between Nob Hill and Union Square. The front desk staff was very friendly and professional. I found this hotel on Trip Advisor and they happened to have a discounted rate ($127) since I booked just a few days before Our Saturday arrival. Valet parking was $46 including tax but had fast service with in-and-out privileges.

When we arrived at 2pm the room smelled pretty heavily of air freshener which always makes me leery of some kind of cover-up... And also it seemed to go against the "green" designation , but it was definitely clean.

Super comfy bed. Old TV with no channel guide. The expected crazy expensive mini fridge items. Very roomy bathroom, although ours was an ADA accessible room, so not sure if they are all that big. The room was pretty small as is the norm for city properties.

I would definitely recommend this hotel and will stay here again when the opportunity comes up.

Fantastic. Stayed here last weekend and was not let down. A bit pricey, but that's to be expected in its location. Most other hotels on or around Union Square were around the same price. Room was extremely clean, quiet, bed was very comfortable. They even let us check in 2 1/2 hours early at no extra cost. Be aware that there's no complimentary parking - you have to pay an extra $45 for a 24-hour valet. Down the street is the Sutton garage which is $38 for 24 hours, so if you don't mind the walk it's a slightly better deal, but they don't have in and out privelages like the valet, so you'll have to walk or cab. Will definitely stay here again.

Like many others, I too was looking for an affordable hotel for a Valentine's Day getaway from Boston.  It is one of the only green hotels in San Fran, I believe.  The room was very clean and spacious. The gentleman managing the front desk was very nice and friendly when we checked in around midnight.  The front desk also has a good collection of DVDs to borrow in case you want to have a quiet night in.

On a side note, the hotel sits along one of the trolleys, but during busy hours the trolley can get packed quickly.   Plenty of restaurants in walking distance though.

I'll definitely be staying here again when I am visiting San Fran.

This hotel is best for tourists. Rooms are very clean, spacious and well-appointed.  Tourists will like the location, right near union square, shopping and the trolly.   Big downside for business traveler is that gym is only a room with one treadmill.  If you are a runner, get outside and enjoy an awesome hilly run (check the weather for appropriate running gear it's colder than you think).

The Bed was a lot like the 'heavenly bed' that the Westin uses, so comfy I didn't want to get out of bed ever again.  Rooms facing the street are noisy, and the walls between rooms are a bit thin.

Overall, great hotel.

Definitely a solid choice at a lower cost than other places in town.

-Courteous, helpful staff

-10-15 min walk from the Powell muni/bart station, so it's easy to pop down to go anywhere in the city

-10 min walk from the main shopping zone, Westfield mall, etc.

-Close to a lot of restaurants (then again a huge amount of them are terrible/aimed at tourists)

-Comfortable rooms (small, but comfortable)

-Spacious, well-designed bathrooms

-If you're on a high floor, nice views

-Mini-fridge that you can store leftovers in easily (no microwave though)

-Big TV (and dvd player) with lots of cable/tv channels

-Most comfortable bed I've slept in, in a hotel, in a long time

-Quick to acclimate AC/heat

-In-hotel dining is kind of a joke. There's a "restaurant" (with no site/info online) that's only open for breakfast, is closed for dinner on certain days (what?) and regardless, the dinner menu has an entire THREE ITEMS on it (a sandwich, a caesar salad, and a third thing I can't remember). This part was the most frustrating as most restaurants around that area are flat out closed on Sundays (for dinner), so you have to go hunt something down elsewhere.

-The room service follows suit - it's only available at certain times, and it's those same 3 items on the dinner menu and nothing else. Breakfast has a few more choices

-It's a considerable hill climb to get to the hotel from the Powell muni/bart station. I didn't mind this as it meant i got a bit of daily exercise, but it's definitely a STEEP (for a block) and constant (for the 10-15 min walk from the station) trip.

-Definitely in the tourist zone so the walk to the station or the area is laden with slow-moving herds of people that are difficult to get around

-Yeah, it's a few blocks from Tenderloin, but as long as you stay around Powell it's fine.

-This is minor, but check ahead if you have a down allergy like I do, as they don't have any blankets that aren't down (kind of surprising)

-Even if you're on the 10th floor, you'll definitely hear garbage trucks a few times a week

-Outside noise isn't a problem as much as inside noise - paper thin walls, hope that you have kind/quiet neighbors, try to get a top floor room, and try to avoid being near the elevators.

We booked a room through Kayak/Expedia, and were expecting a king sized room.  When we arrived, much to our disappointment, Expedia had changed our reservation option to two twin sized beds...not the romantic Memorial Day weekend my bf and I were anticipating. While Expedia would do nothing but be jerks, the staff at the Orchard checked their sister hotel and non-related hotels in the area to try to find us a room with a king or queen room. They could find us nothing because it was a holiday weekend, but made other offerings to help soothe the fact that we had a twin room (it was a lovely room if booking a room with a relative or friend).  Fortunately, the gods shined upon us, and someone with a king room changed their plans, and we were immediately offered the room.

The staff was kind and helpful, and the accommodations are beautiful. There is a trolley stop on the corner, and lots of top notch entertainment, restaurants and bars within walking distance.

Room was clean, bed looked comfy- two important things. However, for $350+ a night, it's somewhat of a joke. This hotel is no better than the Best Western Plus - Silicon Valley, which charge $109 a night.

The standard breakfast they offer here (eggs, bacon, etc.) is $21 + $5 delivery fee + 20% service fee. $30 for what I am guessing is an average breakfast. What a joke. It makes you wonder if they run out to the local greasy spoon and pick up your order!

The smaller nuances (or lack thereof). There wasn't any complimentary water. My mini-fridge was a little dirty inside and had a soda can with a huge dent on the top.

It's definitely way over priced, even for SF. You can have a much nicer time staying at the W or JW Marriott.

I found this hotel through Trip Advisor and YELP hotel search results and both sites had consistently strong reviews from a large sample of people. I have to say that I was not disappointed from the moment I walked through the hotel doors to the minute I checked out.

The Orchard Hotel is located in the heart of San Francisco city. A perfect location for tourists, especially newbies to the city, as it is surrounded by great cafes and restaurants and within walking distance to Union Square and China Town. This cute and charming hotel is also conveniently located next to a trolley stop and a short walk to Montgomery BART station.

The prices of this hotel are comparable to other boutique hotels in the city. The quality of rooms and the service that you get, especially considering SF is a pretty expensive city, also justifies the amount of money you spend a night to stay here. Book early to get a good rate, otherwise if you wait until the last minute you will be fated with the misfortunate of having to spend a colossal amount on your room or even not get a room at all. I overheard that they were sold out the week that we stayed which was the end of the spring season/beginning of summer and no major events going on in the city (other than a couple of baseball games).

Checking in was hassle free and they even allowed us to have an early check in, free of charge. The room service was always done every day, including turn down service. The hotel was consistently clean in the lobbies, elevators, hallways, and the rooms were thoroughly clean as well. The wifi internet service was the only negative thing I experienced as it was kind of finicky and sometimes slow. There were times I had difficulty connecting to the internet but it did not dampen my overall experience. The hotel prides itself on being very eco-friendly and makes great efforts to live up to their claims being an energy efficient building and using bio-amenities bathroom products (safe, non-toxic, biodegradable, organic based products).

The Orchard Hotel also offers a storage service for your luggage, free of charge. This came in handy for us since our flight did not leave until the evening and we had a few hours to kill before heading out to the airport.

Overall, great service, friendly staff, clean hotel, and decent prices. I would definitely return here again and recommend this hotel to others in search of clean, eco-friendly, and conveniently located accommodations.

I'm a Marriott and Hilton loyalist but didn't book far enough in advance and frankly wasn't willing to pay $400 plus a night.  I read the reviews here and still was a little hesitant but I took the leap and will never look back.  Its not inexpensive by any stretch -- $996 for three nights after taxes and one breakfast charged to the room.  Clean, nicely appointed but not luxury and brand new.  King bed rivaled the comfort of the Marriott that I'm used to!!!  The restaurant was a wonderful surprise... the breakfasts were very nice and had healthy choices and the coffee was exceptionally bold, smooth and aromatic-- I could almost drink it without creamer.

Service was extremely friendly although I used Uber for all my rides, they were quick to hale a cab and give you directions.

Absolutely would use this hotel on return visits as a first choice now.  Close to Union Square, the wharf, the financial district and my now favorite foot/body massage place... Fung Soong on Kearny Street.  Stopped in daily for massages!!!  See my review for that...

Loved this place. My wife and I started our honeymoon here. Perfect location to get out and see the city. Moderately priced for the level of high-end comfort. We still listen to the complimentary CD they had laying on the bed - Deep Sleep 101. If you're honeymooning, make sure to tell the staff.

I'm a medical marijuana patient and I stayed at this hotel. I was transferring my medicine from one container to another before I checked out of the room. The smell was very powerful and the maid came in to the room right after I checked out. Well, I got stuck with a 250 smoking charge because they were certain I was smoking in the room ( or they just wanted an excuse to make more money ). I pleaded my case to them, even faxed my med card to them but they simply did not believe that I was not smoking in the room.

It's a shame, I really wasn't smoking in the room so beware of that patients or even just cig smokers. I'd be concerned that they would try to stick a charge on you for your bags or something simply smelling like smoke.  Even though the law states that they need visual evidence for the charge, eh whatever I'm done arguing with them. Just thought I'd spread the warning to smokers out there.

I was here for a visit in October 2012.
The first room they put me in had a distinct smell of mold and mildew. I found the source of the water leak, walked out of the room, and asked them to place me in a different room. Which they did. And it still smelled, but a little less. When I was escorted to my second room, the front desk employee held the elevator door open and shouted to another employee, inquiring about happy hour and the amount of drinks to be had later. Yeah, not professional.

The bathroom tile was still moldy, but not as moldy as the first room. I was outraged at the price of this hotel based on the (lack of) amenities and cleanliness. When checking out, I asked for something that could prove my stay as I was there for a conference. Apparently that was too big of a favor to ask. I ended up getting what I needed, but the employee was rude, and didn't even ask how my stay was or thanked me.

I will never be back; Travelocity should be outraged at calling this hotel more than 2 stars.

This place was very comfortable.  The beds are very comfy and the rooms are spacious, clean and quiet.  I really appreciated the closet and full length mirror.  The employees are all super nice, friendly and helpful.  I felt very at home for the four days I was here.

It felt a little old but for the price and location it's really great.  The valet is expensive and I don't love how many times they come in the room each day - once for cleaning, once to check the minibar and once to turn down the bed.  But whatever.

You can walk to tons of places and there is a gym.

It's hard to beat this place for the money. You could do a lot worse at comparably-priced hotels in the area. It's not the Westin... but it typically costs less than half of that.

We found the place to be clean, with spacious rooms and a few noteworthy extras: superbly helpful staff, wineglasses in the room, free newspapers, free wifi, and a minifridge. On the same block, there are two good restaurants that are both open late, a good little bar, and an awesome more-than-convenience-but-not-quite-a-grocery store open until midnight.

As others have noted, the garage at Sutter and Stockton is a convenient, and less expensive place to park.

Always super happy with this place when I stay here. Great service and rooms are what I would expect for what Although I'm sure it saves them money, appreciate their focus to be green. That being said, they didn't get 5 stars purely because of location.

A very nice stay and a very nice helpful staff.  Very clean, and more than anything else, very quiet.  I cannot remember staying in a hotel that was a quiet as this one.  Rooms were cozy and in keeping with the size of a room expected in a big crowded city.  Front desk and doorman were helpful and pleasant.  On the downside for some would be a lack of room service and substantial in-house dining/bar options.  It is too small for this and there is too much competition.  Who  wants to eat in a hotel in SF anyway?  That is the quandary they and other small hoteliers face.  For a quiet, clean, safe place to stay this is top notch for your dollar and very convenient for mid-city SF--Union Square is just around the corner.  If you require the kind of in-room service that one of the four or five star hotels offer, go there and be prepared to fork over 4-500 a night.  I will be back and DO recommend!

The room we stayed in was a bit small and dated but, come on, this place is a landmark! If you explore the ballrooms, etc. downstairs, you will find pictures of Shirley Temple, Walt Disney and many others spending time in the hotel. All of the hotel facilities are very elegant and nicely decorated we went during Christmas time and the tree and lights were beautiful. The Orchard Hotel is amazing.

I booked this hotel for executives for a week-long business conference the week of Jan 13-17, 2014.  Their feedback:

Positives - great location, friendly staff, good for breakfast meetings (even though it was understaffed and the service was slow)

Negatives - too loud (because of trash pick-up and in general), slow wifi, no fitness center, the bar/restaurant isn't open after hours, limited internal resources

No feedback on the sleeping rooms.

We won't be using the hotel again due to the noise.  That was the biggest complaint.  From my perspective, the staff was very helpful through many exchanges to arrange the board meeting and the sleeping rooms.  Too bad we won't be back.  It was a great location.

One star for the excellent location, one for friendly lobby staff, and one for comfortable beds. It was nice of them to let my drunk friend in when she lost her hotel key - but why was the hotel lobby closed at 2 am anyways? I thought it would be staffed 24 hours. Unfortunately, I would not pay the full $275 for a room here (pricelined it, and it still didn't feel worth the $175 I paid).

I've never heard of a hotel having twin beds instead of fulls! How the hell are four people supposed to stay here? There are barely any amenities to make up for the pricing otherwise. The floor was a bit dirty too, as my feet were blackened when I walked around barefoot.

We LOVED this place. Honestly the staff was amazing, helpful beyond expectation and so kind. We booked this hotel about 30 minutes before arrival and had no idea what we were walking into. We were so pleasantly surprised. The room was perfect for our family of 4 (2 kids). The location was great. The room was quiet and we all slept very well. My family agreed that we will stay here again in the future.

I booked Orchard through Expedia's Hotwire-like section where you only know location and stars, cross your fingers, and book a non-refundable reservation without knowing the hotel's name. I ordinarily wouldn't do this, but I was booking a couple of weeks before Dreamforce (135k attendee conference) and nice hotel prices in the area were about $800/night. The Expedia deal was about half that so I pulled the trigger. I'm so glad I did because I'm guessing my hotel experience was nicer than a lot of the $800/night ones. I have nothing bad to say about my experience -- the staff are helpful and so nice, the location was great for getting to anywhere you wanted to go in the city, rooms and beds were very comfortable, and the hotel itself was charming with a lot more character than the big chains. I would definitely stay here again, and book it on purpose next time!

My husband and I booked this hotel last minute to spend some time with old friends in the city for the weekend and run Bay to Breakers (we're living down in the South Bay). Since booked it last minute (around noon day-of) through a 3rd party service, which meant (although not obvious) that the ROOM was reserved although the type of room was not. Thus, we thought we were booking a king room but we actually got dealt a room with two single beds in it. We went back downstairs and they were able to - thankfully - get us into the king we wanted and reserved.

Reservation fiasco aside, the hotel was pretty good and standard. I'd say the 4 stars is more for service and location over amenities. The doormen are probably the kindest people you'll ever meet (I actually used to say hi to them every morning walking to work when I lived there!). We were on the 9th floor and it was surprisingly quiet. Almost too quiet for us because we really like city noise, but probably amazing for out-of-towners. Room was clean but a little dated, came with turn-down service, good bathroom products, lots of towels and a nice desk and mini bar.

I was very pleased with my stay.  The manager Bruce is a gem and took good care of my needs.  The only difficulty I had was with the wifi during my stay.  From the doorman to the bartender to the front desk staff... They were all very helpful!
I look forward to my next visit!

Update: It turned out that the wifi issues previously reported were actually a computer related issue... And not related to the hotel at all.

Great place to stay.

I agree with all previous compliments on this hotel. Great location near Union Square and China Town. Very friendly, helpful staff. Large room that's clean and beautiful. Our room was made up by the time we finished breakfast. We travel a lot. We appreciate comfort and value. This hotel has both. I think I overhear the one-star reviewers occasionally--rude, demanding people who unfortunately can't be satisfied. We've stayed at the Fairmont, the Trident, and the Vintage Plaza. The Orchard has the biggest, nicest rooms. We'll stay here from now on.

Left room at 10:00 in the morning. Not made up when we returned at 3:00. ATTITUDE stinks as if it was our fault.  Housekeeper said she was too busy for us.

Avoid this place as if it were poison.

Only black stares from front desk as if they did not understand English. .

Room great.
Front desk- terrible/ rude, argue, major language barriers.
Valet- 59 minutes to bring my vehicle from when I first called it in, need I say more! And when I questioned the wait,  the valet and receptionist became upset and explained they were busy and I needed to be patient...  Try to explain this as 3 colleagues needed to attend a meeting across town!

I've stayed in a fair number of hotels, and this place is by far my favorite. My room was spotless, very spacious, and the bed was comfortable.

Location cannot be beat. It is 2 blocks away from Chinatown's gate and the Hyde-Powell cablecar stops right on the corner (Bush & Powell). You're also walking distance to Union Square and Grace Cathedral.

The staff at this hotel was absolutely amazing. They were friendly and helpful. I lost my phone in the Lyft ride and the doorman was right there to help me. Everyone was just so nice!

If you want a moderately priced hotel that is well located I highly recommend The Orchard (not The Orchard Green btw). The area was also pretty safe for The City. I am woman traveling solo and I walked around fine at like 10pm in a 3 block radius. Anything farther that 2-3 blocks I would walk with someone or take a cab (or Lyft Line).
