If you're looking for a basic cheap hotel, this place for you.  My room had a slightly funky hotel smell, but was otherwise clean.  Had no problems using their free wi-fi which is always nice.  The room came with a fridge, yay, but there's just a shower stall, no tub - then again, who'd wanna take a bath in a cheap hotel anyway?  The walls do seem very thin and you can hear a lot of stuff, but it's not unbearable unless people are right outside your door.  The neighborhood is slightly sketchy, but no worse than the rest of downtown.  It's proximity to the convention center is great!

I read the review on Tripadvisior as a good place to stay since it's in Downtown SJ.  Of course when I got there, my room wasn't ready despite booking online and sending them an email that I was arriving early.  I was kinda shocked so I was about to cancel the reservation since I had plently of time according the site and just truck it a couple blocks to a cheap motel as I was only staying for one day.

The person at the front desk gave me a room and did not charge me extra which was great but I was completely baffled.  There were at least three rooms free (talk to housekeeping) and yet he said my room wasn't ready. Can anyone shed light on this? The room that I had was the room that I requested on the site. Anyway, the area was ok for me of course just like most place you have your shady characters and such but be aware of your surroundings.  I love that there is a light rail two blocks from the hotel as I took it from the SJC airport.

The room was great and clean.
Comp. breakfast every morning in the breakfast room and free Wi-Fi.

    Great hotel!

I use to work here a couple of years back and I am so suprised that this attack happened to the Carrie C person. Wow thats crazy! Lots of people stay here for conventions and events since its one of the cheaper hotels. There must of been a big staff turn around for this to have happened and not been noticed. I hope you were offered a refund because of all the mishaps you had.

I have to admit that management has always sucked and those cameras are awful you really cant see anything but nothing like this had ever happened.

Good Luck to you Ramada Limited.....glad im out of there! LOL

Someone tried to steal my purse in the parking lot of this hotel. I recently got a message from the general manager apologizing for the unhelpful staff and letting me know that they have hired a security guard. They also offered to cover my medical bills. Here is my original review:

This hotel is located in completely trashy part of downtown San Jose. I was attacked in the parking lot by a crackhead who tried to steal my purse.

A car driving through the parking lot stopped and a man got out and grabbed my handbag. We got in a fight in the parking lot - I was yelling at him and pulling on my purse strap until he got back in the car and they drove away.

When I went into the lobby to call the police the front desk staff was completely unaware of my attack - literally right outside their doors. AND it was still light out: 8:30 PM.

My foot was gashed and bleeding so the police called the paramedics; they got there quickly and were helpful. But the Ramada Limited staff seemed dazed and disinterested; it was like a joke. Their surveillance cameras caught the car, but the quality was too grainy to make out the license plate, not to mention that I was attacked in a part of the lot where the cameras did not provide coverage. The cameras and staff were both completely useless.

When I went up to my room, my key card was malfunctioning AND the shower had not been cleaned since the previous guest...really? All I wanted was a shower and bed.

NEVER STAY HERE. You will be at risk of robbery and/or assault.

Super low budget and ghetto hotel.  Everything was functional and it was close to the convention center, but it is surrounded by a less than savory neighborhood as has been noted elsewhere.  They provide a continental breakfast that is better than most others - bagels, toast, cereal, decent coffee, fresh fruit.

This place was very unorganized when it came to the booking of the rooms. The walls didn't do any justice for us at night, we could hear anything and everything. The rooms were not prepared like they should have been. Customer service was okay. Would not recomend to anyone. Don't expect too much from this hotel.

This place is a classic hotel. It is not a 5 star St. Claire but it serves its purpose. I have used the Suite for my friends bachelorette party and we had a blast even though we only pre drank and had a small after party (ahuhm with a stripper lol).  The price for the suite is really a good one for its size. It has a large living room with a big refrigerator, sink and a huge screen TV. The couch also has a pull out bed but in the the separate room there are two huge king sized beds, a bath, a tub, and a huge wall mirror with a separate sink.

Yes, I have stayed in the regular rooms. I do not know what people are complaining about. Like I said this is not a 5 Star Hotel St. Claire. Go rent your $250 night a room then.

If you are on a low budget or want to save some money then stay here. Try and get the suite but it is usually booked.

Stayed here because everything was already pretty much booked up for a hair show we were attending this past weekend.  Needless to say, NEVER again will I stay here!!  First 10 minutes of being in the room, a fuse was blown because we had a curling iron plugged in, management didn't know where fuse box was to reset fuse, hotel was in a bad part of town, rooms smelled really bad, some other friends that also stayed here said that there was spiders and even caterpillars in their rooms and there were NOT enough parking spaces to accomodate anyone staying here!!!  Management told us that if we leave we are not guaranteed a parking space even if we have a parking pass!!!

Staying over the weekend, losing sleep as each day passes!!  this place has obvious problems, for one, there are more rooms than there is parking!!  if you park don't move your car otherwise you will be paying about $10 for the lot next door or metered parking at the street!!  my room had shoe marks on the wall , the floors were extremely dirty (don't go bare foot ), the water pressure is Nil and the walls are thin, don't get a room by the elevator, soda machine or supply room....noise!!  the only good out of this is its location near rail service and nightclubs, so if you cant sleep like for me just stay out and play some pool and enjoy the night..

Ivan is the best part of this Ramada.
I had the worst experience EVER with priceline.com (never using them ever again. seriously, and I am telling everyone I know to never use them again either.) and Ivan saved my life. He saved me from the verge of tears. I still got to curse out the rando foreign dude from priceline too.
The location is really good too. Downtown, perfect.

Poor customer service and housekeeping is a complete joke. I got in from the office at 3pm and my room was still dirty!  When I called the front desk, she claimed she didn't know their schedules. When housekeeping did finally grace me with her presence, she was rude the entire time huffing and puffing like I was in her way. I wanted to say "Well, clean the room before most people get in from work and you won't have this problem," but my southern gentility wouldn't let me.

Also, the exercise room is pathetic with just a few broken down machines. Not a hotel for someone trying to be health conscious on the road!

Overall, ghetto look, ghetto room, bad service, and even worse housekeeping. Sure it's in a great downtown location, but there are much better places to stay in the same area! Be afraid, be very afraid!

After reading the reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor, I was a little scared to stay here.
But it was close to both the convention center and Dakao, and cheaper than the other places, so I gave it a chance.

    I'm glad I did!

I was in downtown San Jose for work, and walked to Dakao then the convention center everyday.

The guy at the front was very courteous, fast, and helpful.
The room was okay. I mean, it's a motel.
Draft coming in from the front door while I was on my computer made me catch a slight cold, but it's not a big deal.

I had the "do not disturb" sign up the whole stay, so I can't comment on the housekeeping.
But when I bothered the maid to take my trash, she wasn't rude.
Not friendly either, but it's okay.

The room has an empty fridge and a microwave!
This was great because I was able to eat half a banh mi, put it in the fridge, and microwave it the next day.

The breakfast room next to the lobby had donuts, bagels, white and wheat bread, muffins, danish, fruit, milk, cereal, hot chocolate (yay), tea, coffee... A lot of stuff.
You can eat in the room or take the food back on a tray.
I took it back to my room to eat.

On Friday I got garlic naan at the Farmer's Market and toasted it in the toaster (sorry for stinking up the room, other guests!) the next morning.

Free wi-fi, but all of San Jose gives that.

There's no bath tub, but I wouldn't take a bath at a motel anyway.
    Shower is good enough.

The TV is a small, clunky one, but it's fine. I wasn't watching much TV anyway. Some ESPN.

At night, the 1st St side has some clubs that will cause some noise, but they didn't bother me.

The room would be small for two people, but it was perfect for just me.
I'm staying here again next year.

I stayed here for 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend for the Fanime Convention. Since the convention center is located in Downtown San Jose, This Ramada was conveniently located within two blocks of walking distance. With perks like free parking,  (Note: the parking is first come first serve basis.) free wi-fi, and free continental breakfast (Which I was never been able to wake up for!) I mean it's really what you pay for is what you get, don't expect a door man to wait on you. For me, I just need a place to sleep and shower. If it's all in for saving me money. The free parking is what made me happy since any garages near convention centers, they jack up the prices if there's stuff going on.

I got two queen bed smoking room. The room was a decent size with flat screen tv (but what's a flat screen tv when you only have like 20 channels?) The room included a fridge (Love it! Keeps my water cold!), microwave and coffee maker. Although the bathroom door didn't lock but it wasn't a big issue for me since it was just me and the boyfriend.

Great price for an event at HP Pavillion, we went to the Lady Gaga concert and wanted to be able to stay in San Jose that night.
Everyone was really nice at the front desk, especially Wendi, they let us check in early so we had plenty of time to get ready. She helped us locate the bus routes and gave us the number for  a cab so we could get to and from the venue easily.
The room was clean and well kept, bedding was soft! There is a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, etc. Large flat screen television. The usual toilettries, the bathroom was clean and the shower was just a nice walk-in standing shower.
I had read that parking was limited but that was not a problem for us, we had left and come back and there was always a spot.
Since it was the off-season, the pool was closed but that was fine.
The Continental Breakfast in the morning (between 6 and 10) was pretty decent: Coffee, Bagels, Toast, Cereal, Milk, Juice, Pastries, Yogurt... we were able to all have something yummy to eat and be on our merry way.
Would definitely stay here again if I needed an affordable place to stay in the downtown area.

Affordable, but you get what you pay for.

    Perks:
    - within walking distance to the convention center
    - much cheaper than the st. claire or fairmont!
    - free continental breakfast & wi-fi
    - free parking for the duration of your stay

    Cons:
    - doors/windows are paper thin! if you have trouble falling asleep or are a light sleeper like i am, this is not the place for you. you can hear EVERYTHING...
    - mattresses & pillows are hard as rocks
    - very few channels on the TV

If you don't want to break the bank on one of the ritzier (and quieter) hotels in the area, don't care about the TV channels, and can handle the uncomfortable bed and noise, I'd definitely recommend staying here. It's very convenient and is much gentler on your wallet.

Stayed here with some girlfriends and was really surprised to be asked for an additional "cash"deposit on top of the standard credit card hold. I guess this was a minority tax because the morning staff looked at me like I was crazy when I asked for someone to inspect my room prior to leaving due to refusing to provide an additional "cash" deposit. Some apologies were given when I explained my prior experience but to be honest this hotel is no Mandarin Hotel or Ritz to think that someone would trash a room that looks like a poor mans version of a Goodwill display.

The front desk clerk on the day of check in was not particularly friendly. Maybe it's because we arrived before the designated check in time, but when we inquired if our room was available she said it was. The room itself was simple. No frills, but that wasn't really expected given the price. If I wanted frills, I would have had to pay more and stay at the Fairmont. At closer look, the bathroom needed some updating. The shower head was positioned so low that I couldn't stand beneath it; which I found frustrating. While it was nice the room had a fridge and microwave, they both looked like they could use a good cleaning. Some of the wall buttons for the light switches were broken. Maybe I've watched too many 20/20 news reports on what germs lurk around a hotel room, and while the Ramada wasn't horrible it could use some work.  On the plus side, unlike other hotels in the area that charged for parking, the Ramada didn't.

This hotel is pretty lame. I stayed here this past week on a band field trip with 50 other college students from my university.

LOCATION: It's within walking distance to all of the places you'd probably end up going to downtown, such as Caesar Chavez Park (where Christmas in the Park is!), The Tech Museum, California Theater, Convention Center, all of the nicer hotels downtown like the Fairmont, Marriott, Saint Claire, Hilton, etc. However, everything directly surrounding this hotel is pretty ghetto and rundown.

    APPEARANCE:
Exterior: Rundown, all of the rooms are accessed outdoors; no hallways or anything like that.
Interior: Very dated and old. Has basically everything you need, but it's definitely an old, cheap hotel. I thought it was weird how the closet was in the bathroom. Very limited sink space. I shared the room with three other girls and we could barely fit all of our stuff on the counter.

COMFORT: Meh, not that comfortable. It's just a place to go to if you really need a place to sleep. Then again, I wasn't even able to sleep well because 1) The beds sucked and I could feel every single movement my bed partner made, 2) WALLS WERE SO THIN! I could hear my neighbors talking AND watching TV! It was so annoying to deal with!

BREAKFAST: It's located in this TEENY little area on the bottom floor near the lobby. They didn't have much...just pastries, hard boiled eggs, bagels, cereal, juice and coffee. They only had probably 2-3 tables which was annoying to deal with since I was with a large group of college students. I ended up going back to my room to eat my food because it got crowded in there really quickly.

Overall, I really don't think I'll be staying here. It had a pretty decent location that made it walkable to pretty much most of the attractions in downtown San Jose, but the hotel was pretty crappy and uncomfortable.

This is the second time I am staying here. Very convenient location. It's only 2 blocks from the San Jose Convention center. The only down fall is that on a Saturday night it can get a little noisy around the area because most of the clubs are located right behind the hotel.

Continental breakfast is served and it's not bad at all. The rooms are clean.

Pool is closed from October to May that's bizarre since San Jose tends to be pretty much warm. And that means that the pool is only open for 4 months. Boo!

Stay somewhere else - unless you are looking for a party hotel or get down with being treated like shit by a night clerk.
We booked this hotel for a Sharks game. We usually stay at the Four Points Sheraton down the street but since that hotel had no vacancy, we thought - eh why not?
I will tell you why not -

We paid $152 for a tiny ass room, BUT the real issue is the way we were treated by the night front desk clerk:
We came back from the Sharks game around 11:30pm. We were extremely tired and just wanted to sleep. Apparently there were 2 concerts going on that night in the area. 1 was a dub step concert, and another was a hispanic banda concert. We were worried about the dub steps kids coming back and being loud. But let me tell you - we didn't hear a peep out of any of those kids. We were however woken up and over run with extremely loud, unruly, disrespectful "adults" around 1 am when the banda concert was over. The amount of aye yay yayes being shouted in the parking lot and surrounding rooms were ridiculous. The whistling and screaming, and general loudness was out of control. Car stereos in the parking lot were being played with loud bass and souped up engines were being revved. It was like The Fast and The Furious 52, Mexico City was being filmed at our hotel. Our neighbors were the absolute WORST. There were 6 people in a room for 2. Shouting, laughing and carrying on with zero volume control. So as you would think - we called the front desk to complain and ask for a noise check on that room.
The front desk clerk said that he would tell them to be quiet. And he did. Then as soon as he was gone they'd start right back up. This happened 4x. He told us that he would call the police and have them kicked out. He never did. By this time it was 3:45am. And we receive a phone call in our room. It was the front desk clerk. Who told us -

"Perhaps if you don't want to be disturbed anymore, you should pack up your things and move to another room."

Read that sentence again. The front desk clerk told US at 3:45am that WE should pack up all of our stuff in the middle of the night and move rooms because our neighbors are being loud. Instead of kicking out the people causing the problem, who received complaints from multiple people, the clerk essentially wanted to kick us out into another area of the hotel - because we wanted to sleep. Which is why you usually get a hotel room is it not?! To SLEEP?! We refused to move, which why in the hell he thought that was even something to suggest is beyond me. The clerk informed us that because our neighbors weren't playing music - the cops wouldn't show up, and he knows what he's doing so he's not even going to call the cops. The noise next door carried on until 5:30am. We got zero sleep all night.
At 10am we finally checked out. I demanded to speak to someone in charge and told them what had happened and how shitty the front desk person was. I demanded a refund on the room. They said they would refund the charge, and it's still showing pending on my bank statement. So I have yet to be confident they really reversed it yet.
I have stayed in some shitty, shitty run down hotels by accident before, but i have NEVER EVER in my life been treated so poorly by hotel staff.
So like i said, If you are into staying at a party hotel and don't care to get any sleep, or if being treated like shit is your thing (no judgement), this is a perfect place to stay. Otherwise, I suggest staying at the Four Points Sheraton down the street.

Booked this hotel because I was in town for a tournament. And this place was walking distance to the convention center. Score!

    Many many pros
+ FREE parking! Marriot, Hilton and other hotels near the convention center charge around $23/ day just for parking
+ Complimentary continental breakfast and the choices are pretty good. Includes: hard boiled eggs, yogurt, milk, coffee, bagels, bread, cereal
+ Literally 0.2 miles away from Convention Center
+ Super close to a variety of restaurants and food places
+ Excellent customer service at the front desk
    + WIFI works really well!
+ Even though we checked out Sunday morning, they let us park the car in their lot till Sunday night

For the price and location, the value is superb. Two thumbs up :)

This Ramada can be described in one simple word, rundown. It needs to be remodeled, cleaned but not cleaned with the harsh chemicals that fill the air in my room. Additional needs: new carpet, new drapes, new furniture, new everything!
The only reason I am occupying this room is because I could not find anything else under our company maximum rate in San Jose.
I give this Ramada two stars because the gentleman who checked me and was nice.
