NOT even one star worthy. This place is awful. I booked it through booking.com and once i got there the owner couldn't even understand English and claimed I had no reservation although I had the booking number in my hand. As frustrating as that was, the lady had to call her her husband who still couldn't understand me because they were both Indian and spoke NO english. The lady yelled at me saying that I had people in the parking lost and that I was a "cheater" trying to sneak them in although only me and one other friend were staying there. They yelled at me and accused me in front of other customers. It was the rudest thing I had ever experienced. This random man came up to me and told me that the lady was wicked and I did the right then by fighting for my money back. I was there for over an hour canceling my booking which was extremely difficult since I had no way of communicating with them I had to call someone who did understand English and finally she forced them to give me my money back. We stayed at the Ramada which was so much better and the lady from this motel still didn't leave me alone. She called me and started yelling at me for not showing up although I had cancelled the reservation. It ruined my entire vacation. This place deserves to be shut down.

I do not recommend staying at this place.  My girlfriend booked a room here for her birthday night while her stay at Santa Cruz and when she got there she was told her price quote over the phone at $75 a night was not the correct price.  She was told that no way would the room be that low and that no one would have told her that price.  I myself was thinking of staying the night too, and when I called 4 days prior, I was also told $75 a night plus tax (this is for a Saturday night).  I went in and spoke to the lady myself after she denied my friend and I told her that I also was told that amount and she said no sorry, no way.  Best I can do it around $120ish.  I asked who the owners were and she said she "basically" is and she could handle the matter herself.  Obviously she isn't handling it very well as we drove over an hour away to spend her birthday in Santa Cruz and to stay at a hotel that told us both it would be $75 a night....the week before that my friend was told $65.  Mind you, this is a hole in the wall motel, but it was the best price around (was) so we were opting for the price not the quality, but there was no way anyone was paying over $100 especially since we were both told $75.  Also, when she booked the room, the gentleman told her, all we need is your name and number....so FYI...that wasn't the case the day of.  End of story, we went home....over an hour drive. Not happy campers....and isn't it supposed to be, customer is always right!!!?? Not at this place.  So BE CAREFUL!!! My suggestion, don't give them the time of day!

i was looking for a place to stay for the weekend and wanted to be close by the boardwalk. i came across this place after trying the comfort inn and some other place. As soon as walk in the Indian girl gave me great customer service and offer a queen size bed room for $100 but since i had 3 ppl wif me it had to be $120 but still a decent deal. the place is run by an indian couple and their daughter helps out. i suggest u talk to the daughter since she knows english fluently. i came back for another night and she offer me the cheapest room for $55. clean but a tad bit run down. pool is maintained and parking is $10 if u dun feel like moving ur car to the boardwalk area. i had my car broke into before by the boardwalk during the day, can never be too careful.

Do not stay here! Besides it being two blocks from the boardwalk IT SUCKS. I reserved a two bed room for my family and when we drove all the way there they gave it away. I asked what happend and they said it was their mistake. It was a saturday night and everywhere was booked so I asked what they did have available...she said they only had one bed. I said I would take it because i had two small children with me but asked if she could give a discount or sumthn because my husband would have to sleep on the floor. She said $5 off HAHA WTF so rude. Couldnt believe it we paid 100 bucks for a one bed and to sleep on the floor Also there was a tv in front of the room on the floor and the one in the room had no cable. The a/c unit was disgusting and there was a huge gap under the front door. Also besides the room charge they want you to give a 20 cash deposit for the key. NEVER AGAIN and I suggest u stay away from here too

You get what you pay for, but our stay was even too much for what we received.  The only affordable place with vacancy, one week before we needed to be in the area.  $80/nite, plus tax, for a one-bed, tiny room.   Only 2 bath towels, and one face towel.  Mold on the bathroom ceiling.  Walls were dirty, and the room smelled like smoke, even though it was labelled as a "no-smoking" room.  The blankets had cigarette burns on it.   It was disgusting!!!!!! And, the manager (male) was rude!!!! !!!

where do I begin??? Ok, we just got back from a long trip from Asia and had to book a hotel the last minute (like the night before!) of our Half Marathon in Santa Cruz. Since it's the only hotel available I was kinda expecting the worst already, accommodation wise. Eventhough, I didn't agree with the $180 charge specially with the state of the hotel and room we were in, I thought fine, there's an event going on and all the hotels were sold out so we don't really have a choice. My main complain about this place is not even the room, but the management. I never come across such rudeness. My friends and I felt like we were being interrogated and were asked the same questions a few times, and they won't stop until we say yes! Questions, like how many of us or if we smoke etc. They pretty much have price for every little thing they asked us. We paid extra $20 dollars for my other 2 friends which is fine, but the lady kept asking if we smokes as she has to charge us another $100 for it. She was also hesitant to give us extra towels and had to ask for it again. The room was clean, but dusty. While we were checking out our room, we heard the owners having an argument with the next door guests. The owners wife even called the police on them. We haven't got a clue what the arguments was about, but we heard the guests trying to calm the hotel owners down and trying to explain something but the owners weren't having it. I must say they were pissed and doesn't care if their other guests hear them. It was such a bizarre experience and very uncomfortable. I did not sleep at all during my stay there, so I pretty much run the marathon jetlag & tired with a major headache. The only good thing about this place is the location. So close to Boardwalk where the event was held. I don't think I will stay at this Hotel again, unless I'm really really desperate.

I had a bad experience here  - when we arrived, we checked in.  the lady said we had to pay a cash $20 fee - I told her we did not carry cash.  She said I'd have to go get it.  I asked her where on the website it said we needed to pay a $20 cash deposit?  Why not charge it to the room like most hotels do.  She said no - We called our credit  card company to cancel this reservation and went to another hotel - Much more personable.  This lady needs to get a new job - something with out Customer service.

This is the best place to stay while you are in Santa Cruz, if you are on a budget. For $39.99 you get a clean room with a mini fridge, a microwave, a good sized tv with sturdy, albiet outdated furniture.

The family that owns the place are nice and super helpful. They know all about the best places to eat (which is very important!)  and they spend time te make sure you know where your going, have proper directions, and that all of your general needs are met.

My husband and I stay here atleast 10 times a spring/summer and we have never had any problems. All of this being said if you are planning on staying don't expect anything fancy, it is what it is, a clean room to sleep in.

I'm here right now and 5 minutes into check in I already wanted to leave and find another hotel nearby. They say first impression is the key to everything. Well this first impression made me wanna say goodbye. Staff is rude. Not the daughter but the husband and wife. The biggest turn off is when others speaks in a foreign language in front of you. SO RUDE! I will def not stay here again after this holiday weekend. I'll pay the extra bucks for a much friendlier place than here. Oh please read the fine lines too... There is a deposit for no pets, no smoking, AND no visitors! Wtf? And ice machine they use is super 8's on the other side.. Smh

Big Six Motel had the cheapest room rate I could find ($99) and was perfect for an  improptu weekend trip to Santa Cruz. (When I say impromptu I mean I actually booked the room 2 weeks in advance through priceline.)

Based on other online reviews of this motel, I was prepared to have to pay a $20 cash deposit and deal with a not-so-pleasant curator.

Neither of the above happened! Our $20 room deposit was waived because we don't smoke and didn't try to sneak in a pet or extra people.

And although the woman who runs the place got into a shouting match with some other guest because he was apparently trying to steal a microwave, I didn't have any problems with her... I even tried smiling at her and she smiled back :)

The room was clean and included a microwave, refrigerator, TV and bathroom with stall shower. I didn't have any noise complaints about the other guests. My one complaint was that the room got VERY hot and stuffy at night, and I couldn't sleep with the fan on because of how loud it was.

It wasn't a luxury hotel, but that wasn't what you should be expecting! This is a budget motel intended for sleeping and showering... I doubt you came to Santa Cruz to hang out in your room! This hotel is a 60 second walk from Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and a 5 minute walk from downtown Santa Cruz. I recommend this place if you are on a budget, and I would stay here again.

i got a room here through booking.com and was prepared for the worst, but things went pretty smoothly. i was prepared for cantankerous owners and was greeted by their daughter, a little cutie who was friendly as heck.

big six has definitely seen better days, but the owners keep the place clean, the price is decent and you're a block from the boardwalk, but also right next to downtown. this is a very centrally located hotel if you don't have a car, you can easily walk to the beach or downtown in a matter of minutes.

i like the location and the place is cute, but the room had a heavily sanitized smell that slowly faded to vaguely-vomit, doubt i will be back.

Stayed here for 4th of July Weekend, OMG...the owners are crazy, after you check in, the whole family stocks you while you unload, literally the husband sat across the parking lot watching us unload and settle in our room. The room smelled funky, was very damp/humid, wet carpet, our check in was at 2pm, but when we got there the room wasn't even ready, ended up checking in 45 minutes late, only because we hounded the staff to hurry up! Mold and hair in the bathroom! They DO NOT clean your rooms during your stay AT ALL! They don't even empty the trash or give you new towels!!!! Horrible! 1st & LAST time we will stay here! Paid $400 for 2 nights...COMPLETE WASTE of $$$!!!!!

TERRIBLE. Not only was the room disgusting but the staff was awful too.  It's run by a family who cares nothing about their customers. After finding a big, white, crusty stain on the bed we asked for a refund which we were denied. After some negotiation, we were offered a 50% refund which we were going to take until another couple came up to rent a room and overheard the conversation. I confirmed that the room was not clean and the girl then said we get $0 refund. Instead of losing our money, we opted for the "upgrade" under the condition that it was clean enough. We did a 60-second inspection (when we asked for a refund after finding bodily fluids on the bed, we were told about the 1 minute clause - if we had come back within 60 seconds we would've gotten a refund but 5 minutes was WAY too long) and found black mold and a leaky faucet, but stayed anyway so we didn't lose our money.
After leaving for the beach the next morning, we realized that we left our white embroidered towel so we drove back and asked for it and they said they didn't have it. The lady rolled her eyes at me and told me to come back 8 hours later when the laundry was done. I told her we were from out of town and headed home. She let me look through the dirty laundry where our nice towel was not. Unfortunately, we took ANOTHER loss,  WE WILL NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN and hope that nobody else does either. What a terrible experience. Also, they charge $10 extra per person, per room and strictly enforce this policy. No pets either.
The girl told us she didn't care if we blasted her on Yelp. PLEASE TAKE THIS AS A WARNING!!
On the bright side, the paint job is kinda cute - a light blue-teal.

I seldom give out 1 star reviews but Big 6 really earned it. A friend and I booked a double room for about $50 for a recent Sunday trip. Prior to getting to the hotel, we picked up a buddy, who was going to a concert with us at The Catalyst. As we pulled up, the hotel was less than impressive, and resembled some of the seedier hotels I've been to.

The check in office was closed and my buddy had to knock on their window, until a lady opened the sliding glass door. The check in was rather painless and the employee (owner?) asked how many people were staying. We said 2. As we got our stuff, we were hounded as there were three of us, but only two of us were staying. After explaining, we got into our room, which uses keys, real keys. The room was old, cheap, and as basic as it can get. A door that leads to nowhere. One towel. One toilet paper roll. Two face towels. The only perk would be the mini-fridge, especially as you're given an ice bucket, but the ice machine is across the street.

All amenities aside, checking out was just as bad. 20 minutes before our check out time, the lady from the day before came by and asked "You leaving?" As we gathered out things, my friend went to check out and came back frustrated. The lady kept the $20 security deposit because she said there were three people in the room.
I will agree that you get what you pay for, but had we booked a room across the street at Super 8, we would of been treated better and might of had a better room with more than one towel.

Rude manager, yelled at me to not cook in lot, kept doing it she did nothing. Refused to wash my sheets which smelled like there was an orgy the night before. Entire room smells like a bag of dirty clothes, air coming out the ac stinks too. Every other review sucks, this should be your last choice of hotels unless ur broke like me.ALSO, their wifi is non existant and they LIE to you about it. Theyll tell u it works sometimes and that the antees are there but there is wifi. Tried it, nothing. Have a good day

I have been traveling in and around the bay area and united states and by far this is the worst place i have ever experienced. For starters the deal on priceline was competitive. I booked two rooms one for me and 2 kids and another for an adult and their two kids. I have called the hotel 4 days in advance due to an adjustment in the number of beds i wanted. I talked to the owner JC and told her to review my reservation. I needed two queen size beds instead of one king. I had two small children with me and the other parent had two children. JC said she will honor my reservation and no problem she will get me the extra bed. keep in mind we are coming to the beach with a bunch of the kids friends and families for a family beach day. I arrive with 2 other cars that were following me to the beach. Upon arrival as we pull in a lady runs out the office and gives the utmost disgusted stare as we pull in to park and they await while i check in. I begin to check in and upon pulling up my reservation she states my cost $70 higher then what i booked. I reminded her our conversation on the phone and she almost looks confused then begins to call another person from the back. A lady comes to the front who looks as if she just woke up from sleeping in a construction site with debri in her hair reviews the reservation. She states that i dont get to keep my rate and that with the room with the queen bed is a diff rate. i explain my conversation that i had and that wasnt the agreement. she (name Manish) begins to say well i dont know what you guys discussed but the rate is different and your more then welcome to cancel your reservation. She was very rude about it and again encouraged that if i didnt like the rate i am able to cancel it. I told her i have 4 kids with me for a beach day, i drove all the way from San Jose why would you encourage me to cancel. She continued to be stern and not hear me out. She begin to state that shes actually doing me a favor by even letting two kids in with me per one adult. This policy was definitely out of left field and really says something for guests who are single parents and have two kids. Moving forward, i had kids waiting and ready for beach day so i took the room out of desperation and proceeded to the beach. As I got back in my truck and had told the company who followed me to gather and head out towards the beach in our vehicles the owner also followed me out yelling saying she needs everyones license plate numbers. I pulled over and told her like i said before, these are not the people staying. The other party is coming over the hill so if she could calm down it would help with not scaring the 5 and 6 year old children i had with me. To wrap this up when we got back after the beach there she was again waiting by our room triple checking that i didnt bring any more kids back and she literally counted the kids in front of me. This experience was beyond being un professional. I have no idea how this motel is still in business. I manage the 17th ranked Tmobile store in the nation and am a father of two children ages 6 and 7. I know what half decent service should look like and this was beyond my belief. Not to mention the other party arrived to their room with not one towel in sight. when they brought it up to the owner at the front desk she said it wasnt possible because she does all teh rooms. In other words stating she was lying. very very poor service...

All the reviews are right! Horrible. It may be next to the boardwalk but it still had me feeling like I was on Motel Drive in Fresno. They don't have an ice machine, they have a pool you can't use, the doors are old school knob and key style (not secure at all), the room smells like mildew, the bathroom door sticks so bad I thought I wasn't going to get out a few times, there were tweekers below us that watched us unload everything into our room....shall I go on? As soon as we pulled in the Indian lady already had her head poked out the door "big six or super 8?! Big six or super 8?!" Way to greet us! Walked into the office checked in and right away "who smokes you smoke he smokes who smokes who smokes? I need $20 cash deposit". Not even 4 hours later I asked for a refund which I was not givin. I went as far to say that I had a family emergency and was no longer spending the night and the owner says "nooooo no refund I have a job no nooooo refund. You have family emergency fine but no money back. You can leave the key and leave". Find else where to stay I know I won't be returning to this motel.

Horrible experience. Dirty, stinky, and small rooms. The TV did not work, and the manager or owner was very rude. We got yelled at by the angry lady  for having a visitor that was there only for a few minutes and was not planning to spend the night. No amenities and the bed is nasty, it looked like the sheets were dirty. Do not stay there you will re

Management didn't seem to speak or understand English until I reported the bed bugs. They freaked out, and I inspected the new room thoroughly. New room had long dark hairs on all of the pillows, but I forced myself to assume it was from static in their clothes dryer.  Was woken up at 7am by a loud prostitute on my doorstep taking phone calls and using the free wifi.
I'll try to post the pictures of the bed bugs.
I wouldn't stay there again if I had a choice. Go across the street and pay the extra $10.

READ THE REVIEWS FIRST THIS PLACE SUCKS. This place was horrible all the employees rude and didn't speak English. The paints peeling of the walls, the rooms are extremely compact and cheaply put together. The sheets and pillows were covered in long black hairs I'm assuming management uses the washer and dryer for personal use. The rooms stink like mold. There was a toilet plunger in between my room and the one next to me. There was no toilet paper in the bathroom, used there sheets, couldn't call them on phone for toilet paper because everything in the room was not plugged in. fridge was there but not working no lights no phone nothing. This is the worst place I have ever stayed at and will never ever think about staying here after I seen a few bed bugs I slept In car. THIS PLACE NEED TO BE SHUT DOWN! I wouldn't stay at this hotel again even if it was free. NEVER EVER AGAIN!! 1 star rating is way to high but is as low as it would let me go.

Disgusting. Management is some of the worst people I've ever met. Extremely rude. The Indian lady decided she couldn't trust me and my girlfriend to have a room because she thought I was sneaking other people into the room.... His lady is a psycho and she needs to be committed to a mental hospital.

Avoid at all costs. Staying on the beach would be better and probably cleaner

    1. Pulled back the sheets to find dry crusty stuff that appeared to be food. The other bed, same story but maybe a large booger. Both would have easily come off with a wash. Management was extremely rude when we requested clean sheets and gave us a different room.

We ended up getting a room two doors down from original room.

    2. I was sitting in my car on a phone call when the manager entered original room and stripped the bed. I was grateful he listened and was going to change the bed. Nope! He shook the sheets out, flipped them over, and put them back on the bed. That's Big 6 for ya!

    3. The male manager stared in our window as he walked slowly by, twice. We pulled the curtains.

    3. Toilet wasn't flushing correctly. The female management came in, toilet flushed right away. Simple fluke on our part, I don't know. It didn't work then it did work a minute later. Well, the lady took my friend to the bathroom and condescendingly gave her a lesson on how to properly flush a toilet.

Go across the street and pay the extra $10. And please, contact the Better Business Bureau when you come across places like this. It's not safe to sleep on dirty sheets.

On a whim we decided to roadtrip it to SC for the night, and ended up trying to find a motel to crash in. Everywhere we called was $100+ per night, and it was getting late.

Finally called Big 6 and the kind girl on the other end of the line said they had a room available. Not expecting anything amazing, we get to the hotel around 1am to find the girl had stayed up just to check us in, which was great.

The place is what you would expect from a low end motel, but it did have a sweet as hell pool and 60's vibe like the rest of the family owned Motels in SC.

The motel is for people who really just need a place to crash for the night, and if that sounds adequate for your particular needs, Big 6 rocks.
