This place is awesome.  It is a perfect and comfortable place to stay close to everything in South Lake.  The owners are great too - very welcoming and fun.  The room was immaculate and cozy.  We will definitely stay here again!

Absolutely adorable rooms (I wish my own home was half as cute!), friendly and helpful owners, great location and, at least in the off-season, an unbeatable price. It was the perfect place to begin a week-long vacation. Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

My husband and I were up for a couple days of skiing at Heavenly Valley. We found Alder Inn on Expedia. The pictures of the rooms are what prompted me to stay there. When we arrived we were greeted by the owners Chad and Layni. They were very sweet and friendly. They even told us that booking through Expedia is more expensive and next time we should call them directly to get a better rate. I was happy that they shared that with us. The rooms exceeded my expectations. The interior decorating was wonderful. So classy ! The attention to detail amazed me. I felt I was actually staying in someones guest bedroom at there home. The location was great. Just down the street from Heavenly. We were able to sleep in and take our time getting up to the slopes. I would without a doubt stay there again. Chad and Layni seem like people I would be friends with.  My husband and I are also business owners and know how much time and effort goes into  creating a great experience for the customer and Chad and Layni defiantly did that!

Incredible find. The owners were very kind and helpful, and the rooms were much nicer than I thought we could get for the price. The pool on site is a great place to relax after a trip to the beach, and the location is convenient to everything! Can't wait to come back!

The biggest plus for this place, as well as the biggest drawback is that it's pet friendly. For those who travel with their animals it's great, but for those that prefer a quiet stay, look somewhere else. The rooms are uniquely furnished, no two look alike. The beds are really comfortable, especially after a day on the lake, hiking the mountain or skiing the slopes. In my opinon it was a bit over-priced for what it was.

Great pet friendly place that has been remodeled.  Cozy, comfortable and owners are friendly too.  Nice touch that our doggie received his own bed and towel, and a treat!  He loved it!   It is a nice touch to leave a treat, cost minimal but impression huge!

The inn is nice and clean. The owners completely run it, reservations, cleaning rooms, pool care everything! They have taken the time to make every room unique with its own theme, very creative and nice. Very close to all activities, food, shopping, marina, casinos! The owners are very nice and accommodating. The only thing I would dare critique is that the rooms are not huge, but not crampy either, and  some of the rooms don't have space drawers available to unpack your clothing. I understand most people live out of their suitcases now a days, but I'm old fashioned and like to get settled in if I'm staying more than two nights anywhere(we stayed three), and the amenities they have in the rooms are awesome, plenty, and thoughtful! Yes, we would stay again!!  I WISH TO ADD TO THIS REVIEW!!!!    I had originally rated it as a 3 star based upon what I thought was the rating system that the franchises give (5=resort style 4= Grand Marriott 3= excellent smaller Facility 2= cheap motel six 1=bad don't go!) I have discovered that is not how this rating works! This rating is based on the experience of you stay at This Facility!! In that case, it is definitely a 555555!! The owners were great and very helpful and pleasant, and the facility clean and efficient, and every effort is made to add special touches! A great place to stay, thanks guys!!

Great little spot in South Shore. The rooms were clean and modern. Comfy beds. The only pesky thing was the shower that drained very slowly, causing water to pool at our feet. Easy to overlook with all the extras like free snacks, free WiFi and lovely grounds. Would definitely stay again.

Chad and Layni were the greatest hosts during our stay at Alder Inn.  They were always around to answer any questions we had and made our visit to Lake Tahoe wonderful.

The location of the Alder Inn is perfect.  You can walk or bike to many of the "things-to-do" in South Lake Tahoe.

The rooms are updated and they add extra amenities that some bigger hotels don't provide.

Great place and we will stay there again on our next trip.

Very nice, friendly & hard working couple(the owners). The room feels cozy & at home. Clean & comfy. Close to the marina & Heavenly Ski Resort (california side). The only 2 things that I don't like are the old heater & the noise insulation. Other than that I don't have anything to complain about.

With good reviews and a good price to boot, we stayed at the Alder Inn. Seemingly owned and remodeled by a nice couple transplanted from Texas, it struck the perfect value balance between price and features.

Sure, the walls are kind of thin and the bathroom walls/floor are kind of cracked, but with fresh paint and new fixtures it masks the fact that this used to probably be a pretty sub-par motel. Tiny flat-screen, free wifi, microwave, mini-fridge and coffee maker in-room for a very reasonable rate.

Having stayed at similarly priced places in South and North Lake Tahoe, we felt that this had the most comfortable bed by far - and that's a big plus when you're out on the slopes all day.

The owners, while very nice, do give you the feeling like they are trying to micro-manage you with the plethora of signs of what you cannot do. That felt a touch odd.

Will definitely be staying there again though

The owners took great pains to explain what a bad idea it had been for us to book through hotels.com . As a result, we did not get the privilege to us the complimentary bicycles. Whatever you do, do not accept room 7, which has no daylight, and  is much too close to the pool for any kind of privacy. The "Inn" isn't a real inn, but rather a cheap motel that looks like it has been redone quickly by a real estate fluffier to make it look good enough for a picture, but without making any real changes. Lots of pillows for example, but the place had idiotic lighting, a window that wouldn't close and other signs that made it clear no real effort was made to create something real. No breakfast, except a few snacks in the lobby on weekends  only. The focus of the owners was, I suppose on their Porsche and the Hummer, parked prominently in front of our room, perhaps in an effort to attract other faux riche folks. I won't be back.

Very nice gentleman I spoke with on the phone explained that due to a very bad experience with "guests" whose dog destroyed a brand new mattress, they no longer accept pets. It is so unfortunate that a few  irresponsible pet owners  make it more and more diffecult to find a nice comfortable place to stay with our well trained, beautiful Lab.

I recommend this lodging to everyone else and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay here . Very pleasant friendly owners. New mattresses, new furniture, etc

Stayed here during our first visit to Lake Tahoe. The owners were great, very helpful and very warm. We felt very welcome here. They even helped us when we were looking for parking on our way to Heavenly. The room was a simple but well decorated room, more than what you should expect in a 2 star (according to hotels.com ) hotel. The place had more amenities than larger hotels we have stayed at. I mean they even had a men's razor there if you needed it. You didn't have to ask for one. The location was great, within walking distance to most things though we did just end up driving around to different places. Didn't hit up the hot tub but perhaps next time. Nice breakfast was served on Saturday morning. Would recommend the Alder Inn to anyone visiting Lake Tahoe. Check out their reviews on Trip Advisor!

Great location, clean and comfortable rooms, and unbeatable amenities (free snacks, diverse bath products, nice linens and robes, and a nice pool/hot tub area).

We had a wonderful time here last weekend.  The owners, Chad and Layni, are really friendly people who go out of their way to make your experience comfortable and relaxing.  The rooms are great, the hot tub was much-needed after a long day skiing, and the free breakfast was a nice bonus.  The Inn is a short walk from a lot of different dining options, and a short drive to Stateline and the casinos.  It's also very close to Heavenly resort.

Overall, you can't really beat this place.  It's like a bed-and-breakfast in a motel setting, and a really great value for the area.  We will be back!

My husband and I are presently staying at this hotel, celebrating our 10-year anniversary.  I agree with previous reviewers that the owners are great. Their knowledge of Lake Tahoe is extensive, and the rooms are well decorated and individualized.  We love the location and the closeness to the lake, restaurants, and things to do.  The pool and spa are also refreshing and surrounded by beautiful flowers I only wish I could grow as well in my own garden.

One warning, however, to others looking to book a room at the Alder Inn-- Contact the inn directly. DO NOT use Yelp's service to check dates, which connects you to Hotels.com and other on-line services. We booked this way, spending more than $150 over three nights than we would have if we had called the hotel to arrange for our stay.  In addition, the hotel has bikes available for patrons, but ONLY if they book directly. Instead of using one of the many bikes on-site, my husband and I have to rent them from a place down the street.  Needless to say, we were shocked and disappointed to learn the difference in rates between hotels.com and calling directly.

Alex P and I stayed at this hotel for Labor Day because it was affordable, walking distance to the lake and near a lot of great restaurants and stores.

It turned out that the hotel was completely redone. They just opened the hot tub that week! We even spent some time in the hot tub with the owners and they said that each room (which is uniquely decorated with a slightly silly, but not cheesy theme) has a piece of their old house in it to help decorate each room. Our room was jungle themed and we had a 6' tall elegant wooden giraffe and three small monkey statues in our room from their house.

They even have complimentary bike for their guests to borrow to ride around town. They had free tea, coffee, and granola in the rooms as well as microwaves, refrigerators, and a really good selection of toiletries. It was great! The location was great, we could walk to the Lake and if it were winter it was right at the base of heavenly. It was also a complimentary bike ride away from the Nevada casinos.

They run the business completely by themselves (no extra help for housekeeping) and I appreciate all the work they've put into making this hotel special and affordable for their guests. I will definitely stay there again.

We thought it was great. The location is perfect- it's off the main road so it's not noisy at all, it's a block from the Marina in one direction and ski hill the other - good restaurants close by.. It's also an easy 15 or 20 minute walk to casinos.  The Inn is your basic no frills, old school two level motel style. Fun and fresh recent updates to fixtures, curtains, and decor- really comfy bed, lots of attention to little details for your comfort.  I could have used a bit darker curtains at night- but they do have rooms available with double layered curtains. Really nice owners - they put lots of care into this place, and we would stay here again.

I wasn't expecting much for the price, but was pleasantly surprised.
Pros- pet friendly, convenient location, friendly staff, good price
Cons- thin walls, older facility, old mattress
I would return to this place, the price was right, and the owners are exceptionally friendly. I received many good travel tips. The place is older, but its obvious they have made good efforts to spruce the place up.

This is a cozy and welcoming place to stay.

The two bed room came with full sized beds, not queens, and for 4 guys, its a bit too cozy.   The layout is no different than a typical motel.  But the walls are painted a warm brown and I think it made a positive difference.  Lots of pillows on the beds and unique decorations too.

Great location for South Lake Tahoe and close to Stateline for casino action.  I wish I took advantage of the close proximity to Heavenly on New Years Day when my room buddies decided to stay in and nurse their hangover and aching bodies all day.  I think I could have just walked there myself!  Sierra at Tahoe is not too far of a drive either, but just a warning, the 50 hwy gets backed up and parking can take longer than you think on busy weekends.

The owners are a friendly couple from Texas I assume.  They bought it in February 2010 and remodeled the whole place and looks like they do all the work.  They put a lot of effort into and it shows in a great way.

I'd recommend this place for couples especially.

    More like 2.5 star.

Biggest Con: This place is way too expensive for what it is.  You can stay at a 4 star hotel for $40+ less if you book on priceline or hotwire.

Small, quaint place run by a couple -- they are super nice and accommodating but also seem very particular about their rooms and keeping a close eye on everything that goes on on-site.  Kinda feels like your anal aunt and uncle are watching over your shoulder the entire time you are there.  The walls and doors are a bit thin, so you can hear through them.

Nice that they allow pets for a small fee ($20); however, beware the owners lurking to make sure you don't leave your dog alone in the room -- or they will charge you something like $20something PER HOUR to watch your pet.

Rooms are clean, and I like how each room was decorated differently (although some of the decor is kinda tacky).  Overall okay, but would not stay again (mainly because of the price).  Would recommend for quiet families.

**As you can see from the psychotic overzealous response to this review, the owner is pretty type-A overbearing -- definitely staying away and I recommend everyone else do the same.  And FYI, I checked priceline/hotwire for the EXACT same day and saw a 4star hotel for $40 less.

We got stuck in a snowstorm, and needed a last minute place to stay the night. Alder Inn had a room that we thought was cheap for Tahoe during the winter and we were really pleasantly surprised how nice it was.

Sure, it's still a motel and the walls and doors are a little thin, but they've clearly painted recently, upgraded fabrics (drapes, bathroom curtain, blankets), added small touches like big fun coffee mugs, throw pillows, and a whole assortment of great toiletries that it felt much more like a nicer hotel than a motel.  The bed seemed new (was firm, but comfy), the room was clean, and they were super friendly.  (They even went up and turned on the heat for us while we were getting stuff out of the car, and in the morning had put out some snow brushes so we could get the snow off our car.)

    We'd definitely recommend this place!

We chose the Alder Inn based on it's Yelp reviews. We thank the Yelpers that sent us there. When we first saw this motel that looks on the outside like something out of the 70's we wondered how we chose it but decided to try it out anyway. The check in experience was also out of the 70's. It is owned by a young family who care about their hotel and their guest's experience and they walked us to the room to show us all the features. When we saw the room it was suddenly more like an upscale hotel in a major city but in the space of an older hotel. The rooms are decorated by someone who has a real talent for color and style. The king size bed was as comfortable as our Stearns & Foster and had what my wife calls a "whole bunch" of pillows that are so cute she'd stay there just for them. The guest supplies in the bath included things I've never before seen except upon request from places that charge five times the rate at the Alder Inn. We walked to lunch, breakfast and dinner in three different nearby restaurants with positive Yelp reviews and enjoyed them all. This place is special.  We've added it to our places we want to visit again.

I was going to give it four stars but my wife says she can't think of anything she'd ask them to do differently so we agree on five.

The Alder Inn was by no means perfect, but almost. If you're like me and you avoid the big name establishments and prefer to stay in smaller, one-of-kind, places, then the Alder Inn is the place. After having been recently remodeled, each room has a very unique look to it. The bedding was fluffy and comfortable with lots of throw pillows. The rooms are very inviting and extremely clean. The coffee mugs, wine glasses, wine bottle opener, and nick nacks all about the room simply added to the charm. The continental breakfast provided in the morning was delightful. We ate outside in front of the motel at one of the cute Bistor sets. The manager, Andrea, was remarkably accommodating in making my reservation and in her overall helpfulness. She was very attentive and personable. Thank you so much. We'll be back.

We absolutely LOVE this place!!! Not only are the rooms custom designed down to every little detail, but the atmosphere of this hotel is unlike any other hotel we've stayed at.

The owners are two of the most friendly people you will ever meet, and will ensure your stay here is the best. Everyone we met at the pool, and around the hotel were really friendly and outgoing. The rooms are very clean, and beautifully decorated. You can really tell just from looking around, that the owners put a lot of time and care into making this place the absolute best. Very close and conveniently located to downtown. We look forward to our future trips to Tahoe to stay at the Alder Inn!

Discovered Alder Inn by doing a Google search and it popped up on Trip Advisor's website as one of the top rated places to stay. Decided to check it out for a Tahoe boarding weekend trip and I wasn't disappointed at all. It was quite quaint and the owners of this place were SUPER friendly and nice! I liked how each room was decorated differently and Layni let me pick out the room I wanted to stay in after checking out the photos.

When you get into the room, it is small but uber cozy. I had the "hippie" room as I call it - the one with the peace, and love paintings. I especially loved the toiletries...they had a new razor, men Axe products, and other stuff I can't remember at the moment. It was more than what most places will giveaway for their toiletries and I thought it was a nice personal touch.

The room also had a tray on the bed with little goodies which as chocolate and it was much appreciated. I will definitely come back here in the future and highly recommend this place to others!

Stayed 3 nights. Warm, friendly owners. Very reasonable prices.

After our first night, a top floor room became available - which we wanted - and they moved all our stuff for us while we were out for day. Both rooms had comfortable beds and were clean. Each room is uniquely appointed. Both our rooms suited us. The hotel is nicely located near to most of what you want access to in South Lake Tahoe but far enough away from the main road to be peaceful. There are restaurants to walk to. The hotel has a pool, a hot tub, and a ping pong table. The guests are an eclectic group.

The owners are currently renovating and refurbishing the hotel. The workers don't get in the way and any noise from the updating is minimal and at acceptable times.

Wifi in the rooms was very strong.

My guess is that the Alder Inn will only get better. We intend to give it another visit.

We stayed there for 2 nights and reserved 3 rooms. 1 premium king and 2 king. Do call them for reservation other than go to other websites as you can only book rooms upstairs from them.

All three rooms are differently decorated and all are very nice. They also have a very nice tiny pool area, good for a nice breakfast or a afternoon tea break. And the hotel locates very close to the lake, 5mins walk.

However, there are a few drawbacks, so minus one star:
    1) The bed is too soft!!!
    2) Sound isolation is too bad!!! if your room is downstairs, you can easily hear people walking above your head. And you can also easily hear the fan/flush from the bathroom of your neighbors.
    3) Room reservation. When I called them, they told me they still had 2 king rooms upstairs, but when I arrived, they said there was only one upstairs. Though they charged the same for both rooms and also stated in the confirmation letter. I clearly remembered that I repeatedly confirmed both rooms were upstairs. A bit disappointed, and they didn't have any room left.

They provide 4-start room so they also charge 4-start price ;-)

My kids and I  stayed in room 15. Nicely decorated , the beds are great . Everything you could need. Little fridge , microwave, kurig coffee maker, glasses and cups.  They think of everything. My kids loved the cuddly bathrobes.  We will stay here again.  The only downside is if people are above you, you can hear them walking around upstairs.  we didn't notice until we went to bed and turned the tv off . but it wasn't bad . Sure did not stop us from getting a good nights sleep. It even snowed on us a little. so we are very happy with our stay.Thank you

We stayed in two rooms on the second floor (with king size beds) which were both great. Modern decor, clean and comfy beds, good water pressure in the shower and we enjoyed the mini refrigerator that help save on food costs. It was relaxing to soak in the hot tub after spending the day in the snow. Staff was very accommodating to any request that we had so overall it was the perfect place for us. Great surprise for an older hotel.  Taylor, the on-site property manager, was friendly, engaging and accommodating.  She showed me three rooms and let me have the pick.  Each one was decorated in a pleasant manner.  A bit like home.  I didn't get the wi-fi access code so I called the number and left a message.  Taylor called back in less than 5 minutes and had me surfing the internet in no time.  Bed is comfortable, amenities are great - coffee, REAL wine glasses and coffee mugs - not plastic.  There is a lot with in walking distance and like another reviewer said "far enough from the main road to be peaceful".  We will definitely stay here again.

Great place to stay! Rooms feel more like small studios. Everything was really clean and organized when we arrived. Lady at front desk was really nice and welcoming. Our room was great! Decorated very nicely. Alot of detail. Bed was super comfortable and television was in HD! Our room had a small Keurig coffee machine, wich we thought was pretty cool. Hotel leaves a small welcome tray with a few candies and hotel info on bed. Near main casinos and tourists attractions. Will definitely recommend to anyone visiting Tahoe. Cant wait to come back!! Great place to stay.  Love supporting small businesses.  Rooms are clean and decorated with such character.  Staff is very friendly and accommodating.  No air conditioning in the summer, but the nights are very cool.  Every room has a large fan to use if needed.  Lots of cute toiletries from Bath and Body Works along with a Keurig coffee machine in the room.  Close walking distance to a few restaurants and coffee shop.

I was a little nervous when I booked my room just because I had never stayed here before but I loved it! I went up to Tahoe with my fiancé and we didn't arrive until late. The key was waiting for us and we had no problems finding or getting into our room. It was clean and cozy and didn't have any weird smells like places sometimes do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that their bath products were from bath & body works and they had other little baskets with items you may need like tooth paste, which I had forgotten. Overall we had a wonderful stay and I would highly recommend staying here.

Was not Happy , we read all the reviews and were very excited to stay for two nights...After the first night we had a hard time relaxing with the molding smokey smell in are room..The noise from upstairs all night made it hard to sleep..The nice owners must of been out of town , the young man who sat around in a chair was far from friendly..There recommendations of restaurants to eat out at were not good at all..The whole stay was not good...

Just checked inn early and because our room wasn't ready they upgraded us to a King size bed/room. We felt at home as soon as we walked in. Front desk lady was so nice and the grounds and room are really nice. We will definitely stay here again! Added bonus... They give you free bikes to use! Rooms are very clean and updated with everything you need... Great spot! Great price!

Do not let the outside disappoint you! It looks a bit rough on the outside but the service, staff and area is perfect. There is an area within 5 minutes of walking which jet ski rentals and much more are available. Restaurants are in walking distance as well.

Quiet, small, cozy, cheap, great location, and modern interiors. Free essentials, small refridge. The front desk is nice, and it basically is as the name sugest.an inn. Not some grandeur hotel resort. liked it a lot

This hotel is truly a hidden gem of South Lake Tahoe. Every 3 star hotel is way overpriced, and Alder Inn has very reasonable prices for their unique accommodations. Every room has different themes, the one we stayed in was decorated very nicely with modern decorations and even had a little flat screen to the wall. The hotel room was extremely clean. Included a microwave and refrigerator, all extremely clean. Front desk made reserving the hotel very easy!

We actually got to Lake Tahoe on a Friday with no bookings made in advance to any hotel. We dropped by this one due to the yelp reviews and decided to trust it and give it a shot. And we are absolutely happy with our decision.

CLEAN HOTEL, & you can definitely tell they have been making renovations.
They provide you with complimentary wifi which runs great and provides cable with more than a hundred channels. Also... the worlds softest and most comfortable bed with great blankets and pillows.

Thank you Alder Inn for making our Lake Tahoe experience a great one! We will be returning here for sure!

Very nice, clean, cutely decorated room. Kuerig coffee makers in the room. Office staff was very friendly upon check-in. They have bikes available on a first come basis. We rode a short distance down to the lake.  Quite at night. No resort fee, no parking fee like the big hotels. Very reasonably priced...I'll be coming back!

Came here last weekend to celebrate two in our family turning 21. Great boutique like hotel with rooms individually decorated and different. Friendly inn keepers asked about our stay upon our arrival and we were pleasantly surprised to find brightly colored happy birthday banners with a tray holding a bottle of champaign, two glasses and chocolates & confetti.  Close to shops, restaurants and 1.2 mile from the casino which you can ride bikes for free. Great place with warm hospitality.  We'll be back!  :  )

My boyfriend and I stayed here this past weekend and loved it! The location is great and the rooms are very clean and cozy. I am a huge coffee addict and loved that our room had a keurig in it. Housekeeping restocked our k-cups daily and if we ran out we were able to swing by the front office and get some more. Breakfast is served on weekends and there are a few pastries and bagels to choose from. Ali at the front desk is SO sweet! She suggested restaurants and things for us to do while we were there. She was always smiling and conversing with us when we stopped by the front office for breakfast and definitely made our experience even better.

    4.5 stars for this place!

Very clean cozy rooms with no funky smells or stains found anywhere. Lovely decorations that were modern and cozy! Super bargain price too!

Pros:-Super close to the shops and ferries and boat docks and boat rentals in the lake.
    -Super close to the beach
-Super close to the casinos and eateries
-Decent price ($130/night) during summer peak season while a race was happening that same day too. A local Motel 6 charged a bit more! It beat Best Western by $40 in July per night too! And none of that resort fee, clean up fee BS!
    -Super clean
    -Personal bathrobes
    -Comfy luxurious bedsheets
    -Lovely flatscreen TV
-Quiet cool fan for summer months
-Personal Keurig coffee maker in room with cream and sugar
    -Very friendly management
    -Free spa and pool outside
    -Free wifi and parking
-Free bicycles to rent too! I never had that in any motel/hotel Ive stayed in
-blackout curtains that let you sleep in
-Bath n Body Works soap! Also they gave us nostril strips for easy breathing at night!
-free basic breakfast with yogurt, coffee, OJ, bagels and pastry

Cons:-The wifi didnt seem to work while we stayed but we only stayed for one night so no biggie. I could have called management but I had no need for it.
-The instructions to the Keurig machine was absent so I had to tinker with it since i never used one before, no stirs for the coffee too but I had some extra utensils
-Mostly very quiet but there were one or two blaring ambulances in the main street
-breakfast pastries were gone fast due to some selfish kid sweeping it all in one turn. Ugh!!

No real Cons to deter me from staying here. If I was to stay in Tahoe again, screw other hotels n motels! Im a loyal customer from here on out!!! Thank You Alder Inn for a fabulous stay and making my anniversary memorable!!

Found this place last minute for a friend's wedding down the street from here.I have to say this place look very small from the outside and the picture I found online; however, I was happily mistaken. They were quite spacious and even offered different themes for the rooms. The beds were very comfy and even had both soft and firm pillows to keep every type of sleeper happy. The rooms even have a coffee maker, wine glasses, and cups available. Which, speaking of cafe, the breakfast in the front office that is included with your stay is very tasty!. They offer pastries, fruit, juice, granola, etc. just across the parking lot. Don't expect bagels and pancakes but if you are simple like me then you are covered. IF not there are plenty of breakfast options around within walking distance.
The lake is just down the street, so no need to worry about driving closer to it and fighting over parking spots.

This place was great and affordable. Stayed in a first floor Queen room for two nights. The room seemed recently renovated and was very clean and was even stocked with a few granola bars which I thought was sweet. The staff there were super friendly and very helpful when asking them where we should hike. In comparison with some of the crappier hotels you can stay at for the same price, this place is really a hidden gem in my opinion. I will definitely be staying here next time I come to South Lake!

Looks can be deceiving they say...And this place is definitely a spot that will fit that description. It looks more like a motel when you pull in, and the office is tiny and small, and the pool definitely isn't as big in person as it looks online, but once you get into your room, you realize how much space you have in such a great South Lake Tahoe location for way less than most of the other inns and hotels near there, and then all of sudden you do the happy dance.

The rooms are pretty big, they come with robes, the bathroom is decently sized too (although the shower door is a mirror, so that is a little weird when you are standing in the bathroom I thought), and the beds are comfy, and there is a free breakfast that includes more than just muffins which is always a bonus. The free wifi was a little spotty, but free parking is another plus, and the rooms come ready for a party with wine glasses, wine openers, free coffee, etc. There is a grill outside people can use if they want, a semi broken but still usable ping pong table, and that small pool and hot tub. So really for the price, you can't really beat this place. Glad we discovered it on our mini trip to Tahoe!

Not really sure why I waited so long to try this place out. I was looking for a last-minute place to say for a weekend trip to Tahoe. I like to be close to dining and the casinos, but every place on Lake Tahoe Blvd. is usually really expensive. I decided to give the Alder Inn a shot. I would not be disappointed.

Don't be fooled by the understated exterior. The rooms were recently renovated (about 5 years ago according to the morning desk manager), and they look brand new. Every room is done up in a different theme (we had room 13...not quite sure what the theme was, but is was really classy). The room had a very comfortable king bed, refrigerator (that actually got drinks cold!), a microwave, and flat screen TV. There was also a personal Keurig coffee maker in the room, so you could actually make a decent cup of coffee in the morning (none of that freeze-dried stuff). The towels were so soft, too (I HATE getting crappy towels at a hotel)! The housekeeper left mini Twix bars for us when we checked in, and the room was very clean. The office closes early, so they leave your key in a "late check-in" box outside the office (you can take care of paying your balance the next day).

In my opinion, the Alder Inn has one of the best locations in Tahoe. The hotel is within walking distance to the Blue Angel Cafe and Cafe Fiore (two of my favorite restaurants in South Lake), and are a short drive to the casinos. Heavenly's California Lodge is a two minute drive up Ski Run Blvd.

There is a complimentary breakfast (a small spread of bagels, pastries, fruit, and coffee) left out every morning until 11:00 AM (way longer than any hotel I've been to, which is great if you wake up late), and they even offer free hand warmers if you're going to do some skiing. I only had the opportunity to meet the morning manager, but she was a sweetheart and treated my wife and I like family.

For the money, there isn't a better place to stay in South Lake Tahoe...and I don't know if I'll ever stay anywhere else again!

We picked this place based on the great reviews and the great price which was $100 a night in March.
The lady working the front desk was very friendly and talkative. She gave us many suggestions on what to see and do and where to eat.
The exterior of the place is very nice and well maintained.
Our room was small which you would expect from an older motel type place.
The décor in the room was whimsical and fun!
There was a 'welcome' basket on the bed when we arrived with some granola bars and other useful information.... which was a nice treat!
The room had a small fridge, a Keurig coffee maker and a ceiling fan..... which was a nice bonus!

Unfortunately, the place didn't live up to the high rating for us.
First off, this place has the worst pillows ever. They are completely flat...... I've never seen a pillow this thin!! It is so strange. I cannot believe we would be the first people to ever complain about the pancake-like pillows!? We asked for additional pillows and ended up with 6 on the bed which still wasn't enough!

The Wi-Fi never worked. We were given the warning when we checked in that "the Wi-Fi might be weaker over in this area" which was code for "the Wi-Fi doesn't work at all in this room"!

The workmanship of the makeover seems to be pretty low budget. We happened to notice the hinges of the front door to the room were missing most of the screws. Some were only held in with 1 screw!? And the tile work was pretty funny over the bathroom sink. It just seemed very low budget which made us question the rest of the place. Attention to detail is NOT their strong point!

    The room was clean.
Not sure about all the extra throw pillows and blankets on the bed. Those pillows get thrown on the floor by each guest and then put right back on the bed..........  kinda old school.

All in all, it is probably a good value for the money..... A-OK.
There are so many places to stay in the area......... next time I would spend a little more money and get something just a bit nicer.

I stayed at the Alder in with my Husband the weekend of May 1, 2015.
As soon as we walked into our room I was IN LOVE!
    It definitely felt like home.
    Everything was clean and tidy.
The style of our room was very modern, and to my understanding each room has its own theme which I think is pretty cool.
Our room had a Keurig coffee machine in it, which was so convenient for me. (All rooms have one in them)
The beds were very comfy and the maids came to make our bed daily.
My parents also stayed at this hotel the same weekend as we had a family weddings to attend.
They also thoroughly enjoyed their stay.
This will be the ONLY hotel I stay at in Lake Tahoe.
It's also walking distance to stores and restaurants....and best of all walking distance to the lake.
Overall I was completely satisfied beyond my expectations.
I will recommend this hotel to all my family and friends.
