OK. So this place is a block off the beaten path...and from the outside looks old and...hmmmm. But the inside has just been completely renovated and is fantastic!! Being off the beaten path makes it quiet, which is good. The staff was wonderful, I got an internet special for a better rate than I should have and they honored it happily without a fight. You can't beat it for the money. Clean! The pool is something of an afterthought, so don't come here if that's what you're after. Very happy!

The main reason this place is getting three stars is because of Dan.  Dan was the front desk staff who greeted us with a big smile, was wonderfully friendly with our two small kids and answered our every question with kindness and efficiency.  If I were the owners, I would give Dan a huge bonus for making this place so welcoming.  I cannot say the same for the female staff member that took on the later shift.  The rooms in this place are standard--relatively comfortable beds, fairly clean, flat panel TVs and even a fireplace.  For the price, though, it doesn't quite live up!  The "heated" pool was freezing cold, the jacuzzi was dirty and the breakfast was, well, hot oatmeal.  Our biggest complaint was the thin-ness of the walls and ceiling.  We could practically hear every little move of our neighbors upstairs which resulted in a sleepless night for the kids and us, further resulting in a dissatisfying experience.  So, definitely not a good place for kids.

Pros: Dan our man!, proximity to the lake and private beach (walking distance), fairly spacious rooms

Cons: You don't get enough for the price, very thin walls (aka, noisy!), first floor rooms are dark, not good for kids (we spent the second night at Marriott Timber Lodge which was perfect for kids and well worth the extra 30 bucks!!!)

Loved our stay! The room was nicely redone and very clean. The front desk was friendly, helpful and always available for advise. We will most likely only be saying here when we visit SLT!

Stayed there with a pup in mid April and I gotta tell you -- Big Fan of this place.  Dan and Jenna are pretty amazing and gave some inside information.  Always tried to meet whatever requests.  They have a small but adequate breakfast and the coffee is always on.  Stayed in a lower room which was nice, but not great to hear people above.  The bed was really comfortable and plush.  The bathroom was remodeled and shower is big and great.  The beach is nearby as well as Heavenly Village....near casinos and the rate was good too.  What made it for me was the people.  Oh, and try the burritos at the tacqueria!  Amazing and the cheapest food in Heavenly.  Wise people would also pre-book any doggy day care while they are on the lake or on the slopes....seems to book up.  The hotel has some good recommendations.  Hope to go back soon and enjoy the lake during summer!

There's absolutely nothing wrong here.  The comfort level from the staff right down to the mattresses was a 10+.  We found and booked on Booking.Com and the experience overall was fantastic. Walking distance to our fancy friends who stayed at Harrah's and The Marriott and who, I might mention, WISHED they'd booked The Avalon Lodge! Open the windows and let that awesome mountain air flow through!

This was a charming little hotel.  The location was great, 2 blocks from the Gondola and a short walk to the beach.  They serve a nice little homemade breakfast - we had oatmeal, granola, strawberries/yogurt and awesome banana bread.  It's an older building so the floors are squeeky so you could hear the people above you, but the bathroom was nice and there was a fireplace and a nice TV.  They also let you have pets.  We didn't go in the hot tub or the pool, so no comment there, but I thought it was cool that they provide recreational stuff for you to use (such as bikes).
All in all, it was a cozy stay and I'd recommend it.

Pros - Fireplace in rooms, friendly staff, continental breakfast and they also normally have some type of drink - sangira, beer, etc to drink in the main lodge area.  The bathroom is also nicely remodeled.  It is very close to everything.

Cons - Bathroom counter space is limited and if you are staying at the hotel request a room on the 2nd level otherwise you can hear people walking around.

Stayed for four nights. Check in was at 3pm, but we arrived in town at 12:30 and they let us in our room early. Super nice staff. They are dog friendly which was a must for us (sadly some people didn't pick up their dogs poop along the parking lot, they give dog owners a bad name, clean up after your pets people!). Loved the look of the rooms. Comfy beds. Big shower. Delicious continental breakfast items in the morning. Most hotels put out cheap muffins and cereal, but at Avalon they had oatmeal, fresh blue berries and strawberries, some kind of yummy cranberry bread. YUM! There was only two negatives. One was that the heat system (which was a gas fire place, super cute!) made a lot of noise. We had it set on a low setting at night just to make sure we didn't freeze, and every time it clicked on and off there was this horribly loud ticking noise that would go on for like ten minutes. It kept waking me up. The second negative is that there is NO counter space in the bathroom. There was a tiny ledge that we set our toothbrushes on, but trying to do hair or make-up was impossible. I really liked the lodge though, all the positives highly out-weighed the negatives.

Pros: friendly and helpful staff; location to casinos; nice rooms; pet-friendly; free wifi; private beach
Cons: parking; thin walls; barking dogs; no counter space in the bathrooms

My rating is really about 3 1/2 stars...So we booked this based on online site reviews. The staff was very friendly and helpful; they offer different 'adult beverages' daily in the lobby from 4 on which was nice. The breakfast has breads made from a local bakery-loved that! It didn't look like anything fancy from the outside, but the place is being renovated; in fact, the rooms are just about done. I liked the new touches, from the modern decor, to the gas fireplaces, flat screen tvs, and an ipod docking station / alarm (though my iphone 4 wouldn't fit).  In the room, the bathroom was beautiful, with a slate floor and shower, pedestal sink, and bronzed fixtures. The only drawback to the bathroom is that the only counter space is one 3"x12" glass shelf above the sink, which made it difficult when getting ready; had to use the toilet lid to put the blow dryer on. Hopefully they will put in a small table or something. The shower ran out of warm water; however I know that I was showering at peak times, so since we were at a small place, I was not overly bothered.  The faucet water, on the other hand: the hot comes out SCALDING and someone will end up getting burned if not fixed.  (I meant to mention it when we checked out, but ended up just plain forgetting). We arrived on quite a warm day; this place has no AC. The room was warm, so we got a fan from the office and had to open the windows. Of course, so did everyone else. Listening to crying babies and barking dogs (since this is a pet-friendly place) in the evening and in the wee hours of the morning was not fun. We could hear snoring through the walls, but it wasn't too bad. The beds are comfortable and the linens are brand-new. The walkways and stairs were redone in slate, which looks nice. However, the slate is already breaking and crumbling off the stairs. This is going to have to be redone again as it seems like an accident waiting to happen if it gets any worse. Parking was BAD; the spots are so narrow, if you have anything bigger than a small sedan you can pull in, but you and the cars next to you will not be able to open the doors.  Many in between spots were left open as no one wanted to get stuck in their cars or get them dinged up by other vehicles.  We never went to the private beach, but we drove by and it looked clean and welcoming. Would I stay here again? Maybe. The staff and the nice upgrades make me want to say yes, but the parking and noise level, along with wondering if there will be pet 'odors' in rooms when the renovation isn't quite so new makes me hesitate. (And we didn't think it was worth the price originally quoted; the internet deal did make it reasonable).

Well the bad news is there was a cockroach in the bathroom...and it would not die. The other bad news which has been mentioned in previous reviews is the walls are paper thin. I stayed on the second floor so there was no noise from above but I could hear  our neighbors quite well. Also the shower water is  lukewarm. On a good note the beds were comfortable with cozy linen and the room was large, the bathroom despite the cockroach is nice to look at but neither my spouse or I would go back.

Bottom Line - We heard EVERYTHING going on next door (and our neighbors were not being particularly loud) and the room had an unpleasant odor.  Even so, this place has potential if management invests in some much needed sound-proofing and ensures that the rooms are cleaned properly.

We stayed at the Avalon Lodge twice.  After our first visit, which was very nice (the place was empty, which, it turns out, was key to our enjoyment of it), we decided this would be our "go to" place in South Lake.  We have season passes at Heavenly and visit South Lake frequently during the winter.  After our second visit (described in the "cons" section below), I'm confident we will not return.

- Location is great; easy walk to Heavenly Gondola, village and casinos
- The rooms have been remodeled tastefully and the beds are comfortable.  The gas fireplace/heater is a nice touch, though it does not really heat the bathroom, which can be cold.  The TVs are very small, but we weren't there to watch TV so this was not an issue for us.
- Most of the staff is friendly and generally helpful
- Rates are reasonable.  We paid approx. $130/night for our last visit.  If they can get their act together, this would be a great value.

- As mentioned above, we heard our neighbors' conversations, snoring and television as if they were in our room with us.  I got very little sleep because of the snoring.  I would have complained to either the Avalon staff or our neighbors, but they weren't behaving unreasonably.  They were not partying late into the evening or even raising their voices.  In other words, it was clear that the problem is with Avalon's walls, and not with the people next door.  The Lodge was full, so we could not switch rooms.
- The room smelled like somebody barfed and then didn't do a thorough job cleaning it up.  Again, the Lodge was full, so we did not have the option to get another room.
- The breakfast barely qualifies as "continental" and there's very limited seating in the lobby.

We left a day early for multiple reasons, including the problems with our room.  Though I informed the sympathetic front desk person about the loudness and bad smell, we still paid for the second day and were not offered a discount of any kind.

I stayed here on a last-minute trip to Heavenly and it was fantastic.  The motel is a 5-10 minute walk from the Heavenly gondola and also within walking distance of the Stateline casinos and plenty of eateries.

Not only is the location ideal, but my friends and I got to stay in one of the newly renovated rooms.  Ours had a gas fireplace that kept the room very toasty (almost too toasty at times), a beautiful bathroom with modern stone tiles, and comfy beds that were on the firmer side.

The continental breakfast was simple but satisfying.  In addition to fresh coffee and OJ, they served hot oatmeal with plenty of options for stir-ins including fresh raspberries, raisins, brown sugar, along with granola and yogurt.  They also had this tasty sweet, but not overly sweet, raisin cinnamon bread.

My only complaint was that the people in the room above us were noisy and the ceiling/walls were pretty thin.  If I had the chance to stay here again I would request a room on the top floor so I will be able to rest after a long day on the slopes.

As most of the other reviews mention, this hotel is very good but has its flaws.  I liked the stone shower and the redesigned bathroom.  Yet there is no place for anything in the bathroom (except the top of the toilet tank) and our bathroom had a 50-year old window with no screen.  There is no AC, so hope for coolness.  The parking is tight, to put it mildly, and the continental breakfast (for a very small continent, apparently) isn't good because there's no place to eat it, in the lobby or your room.  But given all that -- I enjoyed the place.  It's got a great location, the room was about 90% refurbished, had a flat screen TV and the staff was super.  Would go there again.

I was very disappointed with my stay at the Avalon Lodge for the cost of the room, I felt like I paid for top quality and stayed at a motel. The website was really misleading on the service they provided. When we asked about the specials and packages mentioned online, the staff did not seem knowledgable on anything. The also mentioned having a marketplace cafe which upon arrival included about as much information as a mini bar. I was completely disappointed with the facilities- the outward appearance of the overall "lodge," the office/waiting area, the small bathroom with luke warm water. However, I will say the bed was very comfortable which is why I gave it 2 stars.

Stayed here because of a LivingSocial online deal. Had a corner room on the 2nd floor

Pros: good healthy breakfast - oatmeal, granola and fresh berries, spacious room with nice slate tile shower, comfy bed, nice sitting area and fireplace doubled as the heater.

Cons: limited storage space in the bathroom and thin walls between the rooms. We heard everything going on in the room next to us.

I didn't stay here, so it's unfair for me to put a star but Yelp won't let me post this review without a rating.  Just beware of the more than 72 hour cancellation if you really must cancel.  They charge $35 and refund the remainder of the deposit.

Spent 3 days/ 2 nights using a Living Social special.  We just wanted a nice place to relax with our bulldog.  The champagne in the room was really nice.  The bed was one of the best we have found in a hotel.  The staff was personable and very helpful.  The large walk in shower was awesome.  Conveniently located between the lake and a major shopping area, both in walking distance.

The rooms are obviously completely reworked in the last few years.  We look forward to visiting again.

Pros: Great location (walking distance to beach and the village), friendly staff, clean facilities, easy parking, very comfortable bed, great mid-week special deal.

Cons: Very thin walls (for both people noise and water pipe noise), less than decent breakfast, mid-week special food/wine package hardly enjoyable.

We stayed at the Avalon Lodge for our wedding weekend. I had called a few months before and they were able to get us a block of rooms at a discounted rate for our guests.

The staff is very helpful and friendly. They offered to do whatever we needed in order to make our wedding weekend a great time for everyone. They have 24 hour concierge service, and a little market downstairs in case you need a snack.

The rooms were very nice, we were pleased with the size of them, and the size of the showers.

There was a huge deck for visiting close to our room, which was fun for catching up with our friends and family. We were out there all the time. They have a continental type breakfast set up every morning. It was usually oatmeal, berries, coffee and a loaf of banana type bread.

There were a few drawbacks that kind of threw me for a loop, only because we weren't told about them prior to our arrival. There is no air conditioning in the hotel. I thought that was a little weird. If the weather is normal Lake Tahoe weather, you are ok with leaving the windows open. We checked in during a heat wave, and at 103 degrees, I was desperate for air conditioning. Also, the pool was being drained due to a maintenance issue. Not a huge deal, but again, we weren't notified about it prior to arrival so I was a little disappointed.

As a whole, I was pleased with the hotel and our guests had a great time. Two of our guests stayed at 3 Peaks Beach & Resort hotel, which is a little more pricey than the Avalon, and they said our rooms were much nicer.

I feel mixed writing this review.  I appreciate that the avalon was able to accommodate us quickly due to another hotel being overbooked.  We arrived later at night and gave them a call to alert them of our arrival.  We arrived to the room and it was a beautiful room.  However, it was FREEZING! We read on a sign on the wall that said that the gas fireplace is the only source of heat for the room.  It was on when we arrived but it was not warm.  We noticed a little while later that a small window in the bathroom was wide open.  Meanwhile, it was like 20 degrees outside.  I went to bed shortly later and slept in a winter hat completely under  the blankets.  I awoke at about 5 a.m. and the room was hot.  The fireplace was sufficient as a heating device for the rest of the weekend.  But that first night was rough.  The room was very nice and clean.  The bathroom was beautiful.  The shower pressure was pitiful and the shower did not get as hot as i like.  The bed was wonderful though.  Seriously, one of the most comfortable beds i've ever slept in.  The hotel was located close to town which was nice.  If you stay here in the winter, I would recommend calling on your trip up there to ask them to turn the heat on.

We recently came to Tahoe to celebrate our Anniversary and were not sure where to stay. We didn't want to spend a ton of money so we stayed at the Avalon Lodge and were very impressed... We weren't expecting too much as we had booked the hotel for a fairly low price but we were pleasantly surprised.  We were greeted and offered fresh sangria, complimentary bikes and a healthy breakfast the next morning. We got to our room to find a very comfortable bed with premium bedding and a cute little fireplace.  There are a few places to sit outside and relax and the best part is that it's very close to the casinos and the lake. We definitely plan on staying here again soon!!

This is an update to my prior review and is in response to the owner's comment (original review pasted at bottom since I'm not sure how Yelp logs these:

The owner's response is also not quite accurate which seems to be the trend with the Avalon Lodge- if you carefully read through the comments, you'll see a common theme of issues.   In any event, I did fail to correct that unknown to me and after my initial call to the manager, the Avalon did reverse the rip-off fee.   The front desk refused to remove the charge and there was no manager on duty.  My only recourse was to call the owner and leave a message which I did.  In response to that, apparently there was a manager who called back.  The manager refused to issue a refund: I stated that I was not informed of  the extra person charge when I made the reservation and at check-in.  Basically, I was told tough luck.  So, I told the manager, I would be sure to get the word out.   A half-hour later the manager called back and offered a refund if I would not post negative reviews.  I said sorry, my reviews can't be bought and they should have done the right thing in the first place.  The manager did not state that he would reverse the charge anyway.  I found out a month later on my credit card statement.

The owner called up a while later and stated that since I had received the refund, would I add that to my review and I said that I would and during the course of the holidays, I forgot (and the owner did follow up with the same request and again I forgot).  The only thing I was going to add was that they refunded the money later and again it appears mostly to have been about getting the online review changed.

If they had refunded the money in the first place, this would not have happened.  In terms of the Living Social deal, they are correct it was in the very small print - however, Avalon Lodge still did not mention it at time of reservation or check-in.  As an aside, I did contact Living Social, they immediately apologized and issued a partial refund.

And of course, I was upset when I wrote the review - people write negative reviews when they're unhappy.  The Avalon lodge did send a certificate that WAS NOT for a Free Stay - it was a stay one night - get one night free- not really an enticing offer.

So, make your own decision - caveat emptor.

We stayed at the Avalon lodge this last weekend and encountered 2 major issues: 1) our room #12 was extremely noisy (at the base of the stairs- bottom floor) and 2) this was a part of a living social deal - we brought our son and Avalon lodge charged us an additional $12 a night for him.  When we made the reservation - they did not mention this fee and when I checked out - the person at the desk said that it was the owners policy and nothing she could do about it.

Beware of the add-on fees.  The continental breakfast is sparse.  The rooms are clean though and the location is nice.  I called to speak to the owner.  The owner did not call back - instead a manager called back and refused to refund the add-on fee - he claimed that it was a living social issue.  I informed him that LivingSocial did not add on the fee- the hotel did.

My boyfriend bought us the deal for Avalon Lodge on LivingSocial a few months back...

After checking in and heading upstairs to the room, we settled in for a bit to nap after a long drive.  When we pulled back the sheets, I noticed there were quite a few small, dark hairs (gross) on the bottom sheet and everything was wrinkled.  I called downstairs (on my cell because the landline didn't work) and asked as nicely as possible if someone could please change the sheets while we were out to dinner.  So, rather than nap, we left the room for about two hours to eat and when we returned, the deadbolt was no longer locked - someone had obviously gone in our room and while we were pissed the door wasn't locked, we were glad at least the sheets would be clean.

When we got inside, the sheets had in fact not been changed (there was a big hole in the bottom sheet that was still there and the dark hairs were still present).  So...I called the front desk again and asked if someone could please bring a set of sheets upstairs so we could change them ourselves.  The woman responded by saying, "We already sent someone up there a while ago.  They changed your sheets."  Not sure what is going on with the management but in my experience, the customer is always right.

We finally ended up getting the set of sheets, put them on ourselves, and were able to get some sleep.  Very disappointing experience and not at all the romantic lodge I had hoped for.

I stayed here for two nights courtesy of a LivingSocial deal and couldn't have been more pleased. The bottle of chilled champagne and chocolates awaiting me and my bf were just the right touch after a longish drive up from the Bay Area. The room was quite large with a wonderful king sized bed complete with a nice down comforter. There was a nice flat screen TV with plenty of good channels, an awesome fireplace and a HUGE stone tiled shower. I'm not a breakfast person but my bf is and he loved what they offered, especially the oatmeal with fresh berries and granola. He brought me back fresh brewed coffee and it was really good, too.
If I had to complain about anything, it would be very minor - rough toilet paper (lol), pillows that were too firm and carpet that needed to be replaced. The room could have used a larger table/desk for a laptop set up. There was a small round table but it wasn't really big enough . I'm a student and needed to do a bit of work. Normally, on a mini vacation, this wouldn't be an issue.  At the time of my stay (Halloween wknd) they were still finishing up some renovations so maybe carpeting was the last part. Not that big of a deal. The pool was closed but not the hot tub. We went in it for a while after a hike up above Emerald Bay - which the hotel staff recommended and the hot tub was HOT and very relaxing! The location of the Lodge is perfect, just a few blocks off the main road but walking distance to Heavenly Village and shopping. Next time I go to Tahoe, I will make a point to stay at the Avalon Lodge again and I definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a cozy, romantic place to stay.

I wanted to really like this place as it is very dog friendly and in a great location.  However, there are several big issues I have with place.  My first room had bugs crawling in the bed.  They did remedy this by moving me to another room immediately.  The new room was missing the vanity mirror, had a loose shower handle that made it difficult to control temperature or to get the water all the way off, and had a wine fridge with shelves removed as the mini fridge.  All of this could have been overlooked but then there are the charges.  I paid up front when I booked the hotel.  When I arrived they told me they hadn't charged the tax and they charged a small amount on my card for that.  They also told me they would put a hold on my card for incidentals, which was fine when I assumed it would be $100 but I was shocked to see the hold was for $200!  Then after I returned home, a few days later I see another random charge for a small amount from the hotel and when I called they said this was just the rest of the charges that should've been charged previously.  Overall there were four charges on my card for one stay because they failed to charge the full amount each time (granted the incidentals was released from the card within a few days)!  For the last charge I didn't even give authorization, it just appeared and if I didn't check my statement, I wouldn't have known.

VERY nice lodge to stay at in Lake Tahoe! Staff was nice and friendly. Supplied us with everything we need. VERY dog friendly lodge. I was able to bring my dog on the trip. They supplied doggy treats and poop bags for him, lol! Lodge was just 3 blocks away from the HUGE lake. Went to the firework show that night on the lake, VERY NICE! Will get back here soon and will DEFINITELY stay here again. Especially after the discount coupons they gave us for staying ; )

*Note* My review is based on booking my reservation thus far but I will update once I complete my stay this weekend.

Booked my reservation on the telephone.  Friendly and accommodating on the telephone.  I asked if they priced matched from online sites such as expedia and other online booking sites and they did so without any hesitation.  I also mentioned to them that expedia had coupon codes and if they would match that as well and they did so as well.  Definitely a plus in my books.

After booking my reservation, I thought I also look at reviews on yelp just to be sure that I was making the right decision.  No reviews thus far, but I saw the special and called the hotel back and asked if I can change it to the cheaper rate.  Operator changed the reservation thereafter.  Definite plus in my books.

Hotel states they offer free wifi for all rooms.  Love it! Not a fan of getting charge 20 dollars a day for internet

They offer free parking as well.  Bonus points! Other hotels I looked at seem to either offer free wifi or parking, but avalon lodge provides both with no extra costs. - LOVE IT!

All rooms are newly renovated with flat screen tvs, ipod docking stations, cable and movies on demand.  Bathrooms are suppose to be beautiful (thus far based on a review I read on trip advisor, but updates will come next week)

And they provide free continental breakfast for your stay, but after reading the confirmation letter breakfast is served between the times of 630am-930am.  For purely selfish reason I wish they extend it to 1030.  I like to sleep in a little sometimes.

Therefore so far I'm a fan of avalon lodge. Based on my phone interactions and the amenities that they provide I will give it four stars.   Though by next weekend I will definitely be able to give a full review of the rooms, continental breakfast, parking and the accessibility of the free wifi.

..........to be continued after my stay :)

We stayed here in early April and were very satisfied with the accommodations.  For our first visit to Lake Tahoe, we could not have picked a better place to stay.  We did not rent a car, so being able to walk to restaurants and shops downtown was ideal.  The lodge is in a perfect location- steps away from Heavenly village and the beach.

The breakfast was simple- oatmeal, fruit, breakfast bread, and yogurt.  The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful.  The rooms were very clean and the bathroom (especially the shower) was also very nice.

Overall, I do think the rate was a little pricey.  Nevertheless, I would still choose to stay at Avalon Lodge next time we visit.

Booked this hotel the night before on Orbitz for a Sat night prime ski season weekend.  Prices are often higher due to the Sat stay, but compared to other hotels/casinos/ and lodges I took a chance on a slightly higher price compared to the budget hotels and a lower price than the Casinos or the Marriott.  Im glad a did! Great location, about a 5-10 mintue walk to the Gondola. Rooms were updated in a nice fashion. Beds were comfy. I took the previous reviews to heart and brought earplugs just in case of noise, so I had no problem getting a good nights rest. A simple but tasty continental breakfast.... and we came in kind of late, around 9:30 am and there was still plenty of oatmeal, yogurt, fruit, and breakfast blueberry pound cake left. Definitly would stay here again.

Super cute inn. Modern and pet friendly. The floors are thin. We were on the 2nd floor and anytime the dogs jumped or ran it sounded super loud. I can understand why they try to put guests with pets on the 1st floor.

The fireplace was a nice touch. They have you in a pre-assigned room so they have it on before you get there. Thats your only heating system so if you want it hotter it takes a while, but once you get it to the desired temp it'll take a long time to cool the room down.

The cont breakfast was good and healthy.

Overall a good find on Expedia

I stayed at Avalon Lodge for three nights at the end of July 2011 and really enjoyed my stay. Their rooms are comfortable and many have been newly remodeled. Weird to have an extra large standing shower when there clearly is enough room for a tub (for those who like to to bathe). During the summer months (road construction months) they have beach cruisers and kayaks free to check out (first come, first serve).

One very interesting thing is that they advertise access to a private beach. Unfortunately the "private" beach really is just exclusive so the general public can't go in, but it really isn't that great. Their beach is shared with the other lodges in the area and it was super crowded when I stayed there. The nearby public beaches were more open and private than their "private" beach.

-the sweet iced tea and sangria (self serve) awaiting us in the lobby upon check-in.
-the comfy, clean, cozy beds.  As someone else stated, the room was much larger than I expected based on the photos.
-the large stone tile shower!! so nice!
-bathroom products are all CRUELTY FREE (yes!!!), GE (genetically engineered) free, and biodegradable.
-they serve HEALTHY breakfast!! Granola, fresh fruit, plain oatmeal.  None of that nasty processed crap.

My one dislike ~ the hot water in the shower runs out pretty fast :\

Not bad at all with the LivingSocial discount we purchased.  We stayed there in mid-September and brought the pup.  We had a first floor room right next to the parking lot - conveniently close to the car, but also a place where you would want to have the blinds closed whenever you're in the room.

The room was fine - a little bit loud being right next to the parking lot, but it wasn't a big deal.  A decent deal for the price.

While we were there, the main drag through South Lake Tahoe was under construction, so traffic was backed up most of the day.  I guess they have to do the work sometime, but it made the couple days we were there start off kind of slowly.

All in all, not a bad deal - we would definitely consider staying here again when we make it back to Tahoe.

Loved this place!
Most importantly, this place is pet friendly. They even give you a basket with a few supplies for your pet, such as clean towel, sheet and dog biscuit. cute!
Second, it is a great value for your money - excellent location, modern rooms and very clean.
As a bonus, you also get a light breakfast, which includes granola, yogurt, berries and banana bread, coffee, tea and orange juice. This is a plus when traveling with kids.

My one and only complaint is the heating system. It is actually a thermostat activated fireplace, which is very effective and very fast. The problem is, that once your room is warm, it stays that way for hours and hours and no fresh air can get in the room unless you open the front door. That makes the air inside the room very dry and hot, and it feels as if there is no oxygen left inside. That actually kept us all awake at night, even though the rest was excellent!

Impressed by the lodging I stayed in through Avalon Lodge. The small house we stayed in had a bedroom, a loft upstairs that had two queen beds. Also, it had a nicely supplied kitchen, nice dining area, and living area with cable television. I would hope to stay in a nice space like this in South Lake Tahoe all the time. The check-in lodge offered wine mixed with cider and I had never had that before.

My family stayed here Fri & Sat with our Australian Shepard and we loved it!  First of all, the staff is AWESOME! I can't remember the two that worked the reception desk Friday night but they were so friendly, helpful with tips about South Lake Tahoe to us tourists, and made us feel at home. They even welcomed our dog inside the lobby to hang out. There was free coffee, tea, and a warm alcohol drink for guests. Not only that, they provide a Pet Welcoming Basket in your room that included a towel, bedding sheet, a tennis ball to play & keep, and a little treat for them!

Our room was nice & clean, too. It was snowing during our visit, but the fireplace in the room was great. There is also a small fridge & microwave  in the room. There were extra blankets and fancy toiletries too.  We were in a pet friendly room but it was very clean, no pet smells whatsoever.  We were also walking distance to Heavenly, the shopping centers, & casinos.

We will definitely be back! Thank you, Avalon Lodge :)

This place was very average - its definitely older, and  not nearly as nice as I was expecting it to be based on the photos on the website and the reviews.

The hotel is supposedly remodeled, however I was disapointed to check into a room that was clearly not.  The bathroom had white tile that was cracked (and dirty), a shower door that kept getting stuck and wouldn't slide open or close, and a toilet that made a loud noise the entire time.  The pictures advertised make the bathroom look really nice and modern with dark tile - that was not what we got.

The carpet was dirty looking in places, and when you walked on the floor it was very loud, as if it was hollow beneath some wood under the carpet.

The walls were very thin.  You can hear people in the rooms above/beside yours and can hear people outside all night as well - that was a bit annoying.

There was a very strong mint smell in the room all the time - it seemed as though they were trying to cover up the smell of a pet that may have stayed in that room previously since they are pet friendly.

The staff was very freindly.  They accomodated my early check in request.

The bed was comfortable.

The breakfast in the mornings was average.

I had a nice time on my weekend here - but will definitely stay else where next time.

My experience wasn't great.  When I checked in I was told they had to put an extra $100 on my credit card for incidentals.  When I objected, I was told that was their policy and it would be refunded later.  Upon checkout when I questioned the refund I was told that I was lucky I had AmEx because they refunded quicker than other cards.  The room was uncomfortably hot with no AC and the frig hadn't been cleaned in a while.  I would not recommend this motel!

The Avalon Lodge was perfect for our 3 day stay in S. Lake Tahoe!  We had looked at several different hotel/lodge options and this was the best option for us!

The best part about this place was definitely the beds!  Their Queen pillow top mattresses and cozy comforters made for a good night's sleep!   Our updated room was on the second floor of the lodge and included modern furnishings and 2 Queen beds, clean linens, a small fridge, fireplace heater (with a thermostat) and a nice bathroom with a beautiful stone shower (no tub).

A complimentary continental breakfast is also served until about 10am.

The only drawback about this place is the noise level.  The walls are pretty thin and those folks checking out early were lugging their suitcases across the walkway and down the stairs and it was pretty loud.  Also, the children running across the walkway woke me up at an early hour.

Staff was friendly and helpful.  I would definitely book here again.. if only to sleep in those comfy beds again!

Winter stay. The thermostat-controlled fireplace came in handy to counter the ice cold weather outside. The accommodations were nice and updated. Great option to non casino hotel and only 5 min drive to main casinos.

Continental breakfast was oatmeal, coffee, OJ, pound cakes, yogurt with some fresh fruit.

Yes the walls are thin but I have come to find it is very common.

When we first arrived I was pleased to see that the room was clean and there was extra accommodations (flat screen, fire place, mini fridge and tile shower). After one night my girl friend and I woke up with bug bites. I thought since we were out in the country that is to be expected, maybe we go bit while we were outside. The entire next day I watch out out for mascittos. After the next night stayed I was convinced we got bit while in our sleep.

Found a 2 night romance package on Living Social and booked it for my Boyfriends 27th birthday. When we checked in, we were handed real keys and offered spiced cider. So cute already.

We got into our room and our bed was King size super comfy, with lots of pillows (+1)

We had Champagne and chocolates with souvenir wine glasses to keep PLUS wine tasting vouchers to this adorable wine tasting room in town (+3)

The shower was amazing! I'm 5'9 and my boyfriend is 6'1 so it's really nice to finally have a shower that fits us :) We had plush oversize towels and everything in room we needed.

We also had plush robes and pool towels so we took advantage of the jacuzzi a few times as well! (+2)

The downside is the place is pretty old, so although the renovations are extraordinary, the walls are still bone thin... so we heard EVERY little noise of the people next to us. Thankfully I travel with ear plugs so I was able to sleep, but the birthday boy refused to use mine and had a lot of broken sleep. We tried using the fans and as much white noise as possible, but it was a little saddening. (-2)

Adding this review again - as this was taken down by Yelp - however it is important that this is public information you should have before staying at this motel - this is America right? By no means am I saying never stay here but you all have the right to information:

I bought us the deal for Avalon Lodge on LivingSocial a few months back...

The manager is the biggest b I have ever met and screamed at us at the top of her lungs after we paid over $200 for the night. We went to check in and she said we were not allowed to because it was for 4 people and said we had to get 2 rooms. She tried calling the cops, called us names and yelled. What kind Of hotel manager yells at her guests? That's rude and inappropriate especially since I am in the industry of hospitality. I forewarned her that she would be receiving a one star and she said just wait till I reply to your one star. Please lady respond back to this you are rude and inconsiderate and didn't even offer an alternate solution besides yelling at us and telling us to sleep on the streets.

Spent 3 days/2 nights here in the beautiful mountains of S Lake Tahoe. Where, I enjoyed much pre-birthday celebrating!

Complimentary champagne and chocolates greeted us upon our arrival. As did 2 free wine tasting certificates.

The staff was friendly and accommodating. Service was great.

The room was clean and  modern. Much larger than expected (from looking at the pictures online). King size bed, flat screen TV (with a surprisingly decent selection of channels) and 2 chairs for lounging.

My ONLY complaint, the shower. Although, beautifully redone in slate and quite large enough to accommodate 2... the water was f-r-e-e-z-i-n-g!!! Luckily, the room comes with an in room fire place and in the closet, we found 2 comfy robes. We took advantage of both!

Prime location. Close to local attractions (restaurants, outdoor activities, shopping).

This particular hotel was chosen as it was part of a LivingSocial deal that the bf booked, but we would be happy to stay here again.

The Lodge itself was all you can expect from a property it's size; clean, accommodating staff, updated. The negative, well we requested a room on the upper floors due to tripadvisor reviews but we ended up with the bottom floor. The reason why you want an upper floor-it's noisy on the lower floors. There is no A/C so the front windows have to remain open for air. People that like to get up 6am/7am in the morning or like to know everyone's business or stay in the wintertime may not have an issue with this. The way the rooms are laid out people talk right outside your window (and I mean the bed is right up against the window and the people are right there) after breakfast, often loudly and their dogs join in. So, nice place to stay, there are free bikes, they offer free Sangria in the afternoon, the pool/hot tub is clean, the breakfast is nothing fancy, the check in and out is easy...just stay on an upper floor away from the main office.

More like 3.5 stars.

I snagged a coupon off Living Social for a romantic getaway for two which included a two-night stay here at Avalon Lodge, a bottle of champagne, two souvenir champagne glasses a box of chocolate and two gift cards to go wine tasting at Apres Wine Company. Not too shabby of a deal!

Well, the romantic getaway turned into a group getaway with some awesome friends (I wasn't able to get a refund so I had to go and I wasn't going to go alone!) I ended up spending my romantic getaway with my sister, her boyfriend, his best friend and my other girlfriend. We had fun!

We arrived at Avalon Lodge late in the evening. It was snowing and it was cold! It was pretty easy to find and we were close to the Casino. It's super cozy and smelled wonderful upon entering. They had complimentary winter cider brewing and it smelled just like winter!

I walked up the reception area to check it. I originally booked a room with a king sized bed. That - obviously needed to be change since we had a party of five. The lady told me that they the rooms with two queen sized bed were all booked, but she would double check. Thank goodness one room immediately became available!

The room was very cute and completely updated. My champagne was in the fridge and my chocolates were on the table, along with the wine tasting gift cards. The room was totally cozy and warm on that cold winter day. There was even a fireplace in the room! The beds were super comfortable! Everything was nice and clean. They have complimentary breakfast but none of us got to try it.

The downside: The bathroom was cute but there was not enough counter space! Not very well thought of when they remodeled. Everything was falling all over the place, it was pretty annoying. The other downside, the walls are way thin. You can literally hear what's being said word for word on the other side. Not to mention they could hear us since we were way loud after a few shots and called the front desk on us. Sorry!

The staff here is super friendly. When the guy told us to keep it down, he apologized for doing so and was very friendly. He knew we were there to have a good time and didn't want to ruin it by telling us to quiet down.

Would I stay here again? Probably. I'd much rather stay in a cabin or at the casinos because it's more convenient. But Avalon Lodge is a cute spot. It's more of a couple spot rather than a group spot. Very charming lodge!

Good things to know about this place.
*Shopping center right by.
*Casinos nearby
*Next to Nevada state line.
*Good amount of restaurants close to hotel.
*Can walk to everywhere since everything is close by.
*hotel offers rentals for free of bicycles and canoes.

Definitely, recommend this place to stay at.

Found this on Hotel Tonight app. It's pretty basic but clean overall. It would have been better if there weren't looney anti-social signs posted everywhere in your field of vision.

Felt like I was back in school - don't wipe your makeup on the light face cloths. Don't sit on their balcony past 8PM. Don't use the ice machine unless you're only filling their ice cooler in the room. Any other rules?! The opposite of hospitality. Relax.

Big downside for summer - no AC. We were boiling. This hotel is worth about $80 per night not $120. Might as well stay in a cheaper one next time.

Talk about bang for your buck! The staff is super friendly. We were welcomed with mulled wine in the lobby and an attentive and personable receptionist. Where to start?   I love this place, they are wonderful for people with dogs.   We had our wedding in Tahoe and the Avalon gave us a great group rate which was wonderful because much of our family and many of our friends were able to stay in the same place we were staying.

However, we did have some issues.  I don't feel that these issues warrant a less than 5 star rating quite frankly because the positive outweighed the negative by so much.  Regardless here are my gripes.

(1) The fire place in our room was wired incorrectly which prevented it from turning on after it had shut off.   We woke up twice with the room smelling like gas because the igniter wasn't working and gas was being dumped into the fire place.   Guys, you need to fix this, it appears we are not the first ones with this complaint.

(2) We picked the Avalon because we had stayed there in the past, however getting a hold of management to set the group rate was very difficult and took a couple weeks.  They need to streamline this process.

(3) Breakfast....wasn't very good.   I think a little more thought could go into the free breakfast, like maybe put out an assortment of fruit in additional to milk for the coffee.

(4) The water temperature in the shower was schizophrenic.  IT was either really hot (like burn you hot) or really cold.   I didn't once get a shower that was "ideal".

Otherwise was had a positive experience and I would suggest this place to other dog owners.

I have one word - Awesome!!!

We were on vacation with our puppy and had the best time ever. The Lodge staff was very friendly, courteous. & accomodating. Very close to the beach and the village.

They provided bedding, toys and treats for the puppy. He was very comfortable.

The room was very clean and comfortable. The bathroom was nice.

So, if you are looking for comfort and cleanliness for both you and your pet, this is the place to be. Avalon lodge is our favorite place from now on.

It was truly a pleasure staying here.

Stayed here the weekend of Dec 6 2014.  My boyfriend and I took his parents here for their birthday along with our 11 month old lab.  This is a nice place to stay and pet friendly too.  They charge $20 per night per pet.  They also gave my puppy a pet package which consist of treats, blanket, towels and a tennis ball.  The location is great too, just a few minutes away from Harvey's and other casinos.  The staff was really friendly.  The rooms are nice and clean.  I would stay here again.  I only gave 4 stars because during our stay there was a sewer like odor around the property.  Almost like bad plumbing or something.

I'm updating my review from 4 to 5 stars. We stayed here after our wedding and now we are back for our first anniversary. We didn't even consider another place to stay. The Avalon is so welcoming and it's one of the few places that says dog friendly and truly means it. We were greeted with champagne to celebrate our anniversary and our pups had a welcome basket of bones and tennis balls.

The rooms are nice, include a mini fridge, microwave and now a french press (!) and the bathrooms are beautifully done.

I have great memories of Avalon and I can't wait to return in the future.

I'm really torn between 3 and 4 stars...

We booked this hotel mainly because of the amenities listed (free kayaks available, bikes, pool, breakfast, fire pit, fireplace, etc). Yes, these amenities were technically there, the ones we actually cared about were pretty disappointing....

Let me explain:

- "Kayaks" were a joke. They were far too small for adults (children maybe) and were unusable in the water. We are not big people - I barely weigh 130 lbs and the 'kayak' would have sunk within 5 minutes on the lake. We ended up having to pay to rent kayaks somewhere else. This was a HUGE disappointment.

- If you want to use the fireplace, the pilot light needs to be lit by hotel staff. I brought this up and the front desk attendant said "oh yeah, we should really have signs that say that". Ummm yes, you should. We really would  have liked to use it the first night. After that it warmed up and we didn't need it.

- Breakfast is extremely limited. They put out a crockpot of oatmeal with a tiny bowl of yogurt and a tiny bowl of cut up strawberries. You are literally restricted to taking maybe a tablespoon of yogurt and strawberries (if you don't want to be a jerk and take all of it). There is also granola, but no milk or anything to put on it. They also have a platter of a few pastries, but again, very very limited. We were satisfied, but I still thought this was dumb.

- Free sangria in the lobby gave me a raging headache. I think it was pre-made...Why not just serve inexpensive wine?

- Pool was not heated (unusable), but hot tub was great and we used it nightly.

Fortunately our room was clean (minus a few stray hairs), comfortable, and updated. My favorite part was the huge shower with the rain shower head.

Conveniently located to a private beach 2 blocks away and the casinos just up the street. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but were really disappointed with the mediocre amenities.

Rooms were clean and overall it was a good value.  No AC, but even in August we didn't really miss it much.  Be advised that this place is quiet and they will expect you to be quiet as well.

We suspect that we left an item there accidently, but when we called about it the staff wasn't able to find it.  Make sure to keep track of your belongings.

Came here for NYE weekend and stayed 4 nights. The lodge is not that nice...very basic inside but relatively clean. Price is expensive for what is being offered. Important thing was cleanliness of the room. Overall not bad.

1. Fairly clean room.
2. In room sherry
3. I was surprised bath robs were provided but the one I received was full of holes.
4. Decent quality toiletries
5. Breakfast was not expected so the fact that they provided cranberry juice, coffee, tea, oatmeal w some toppings, and bread was appreciated. It wasn't good but decent if you're on your way to the slopes.
6. Appears to have 24 hr front desk from what we could tell.
7. Bed seemed comfortable.
8. Great location. 2 blocks from heavenly village and right across the street from taqueria Jimenez and their $1 street tacos.

1. Gas fireplace heater was temperature controlled but when it gets close to the set temperature it constantly switches on/off. Kinda creepy and makes it difficult to sleep. Also it does too good of a job heating...seemed hot all the time despite the setting.
2. No sound proofing so you hear people outside and your neighbors next door all the time.
3. Getting hot water at peak hours can be challenging when it's at full occupancy.
4. $50 charge to extend check-out by 1 hr and the max extension was 1 hr even though we were willing to pay extra for additional hours.
5. Only 1 housekeeper and she will not clean your room if there is a dog in it. I can understand if the dog was loose but our dog is an 18 lb shih tzu and he was locked in his cage at the time. We spent 4 nights there and did not receive housekeeping service once.
6. Hot tub facing the street and was non operational
7. Wifi only works when your in the main lobby and even then it's very slow.

Just came back from a weekend in South Lake Tahoe with friends. This is the second time I've stayed at the Avalon Lodge and it is the best place to stay outside of the Harvey's and Harrah's. I would highly recommend this place to any of my friends and family.

The rooms are very cozy, clean and up-to-date.

Each room has a fridge, microwave and an electric fireplace, which comes in handy when it's snowing outside.

The lodge is located a short walk to Harvey's and Heavenly ski resort- think about a 3 minute drive to either place because who wants to walk?!?! Ahaha.

Also, if you are a dog owner like myself, they accommodate dogs at this lodge and the additional fee is inexpensive.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The price is great for what you're getting.

The parking is very small and can be a bit difficult to get out of when it's snowing.

When I stayed this time around, the towels in the room were a bit dusty, implying that they were not changed out for a while. I requested a fresh set of towels and the staff was accommodating.

The breakfast offered was very not that great. It was hot oatmeal, yogurt, some kind of pastry cranberry juice and tea- your choices are limited. If this isn't your idea of breakfast, there are plenty of options around.

Bottom Line: Stay here and have a great time. The other local lodges and Inns are not as nice and clean as this place. BOOK HERE
