Stay as far away from this place as possible.  Last year, I booked the Highland Inn through Orbitz.  I had told the Highland Inn I'd be arriving late and after a broken chain over the summit at 12AM, I didn't arrive until 2:30AM.  After using their night bell, calling the hotel from my cell, and knocking on the door, there was no answer.  I gave up around 3AM and checked in next door at the Holiday Inn.

The next day, I went back to the Highland Inn and explained what happened.  The hotel seems to only have an owner and one employee, an older gentleman with a thick accent.  I spoke with this guy who said that since the billing was done through Orbitz, I would have to talk to them to get the refund.  Now, the mistake I did make was not calling Orbitz right then, but being in Tahoe with friends and planning to ski, I didn't get to it.

After calling Orbitz and explaining the situation, they tried to contact the hotel.  They spoke to the same guy I did, who told Orbitz the owner would have to authorize it.  The owner, however, was gone for a week.  I spent the next 2 weeks talking to Orbitz, yelling at the hotel, and basically getting nowhere.  The owner refused to believe I showed up that night even though, when I spoke to his employee the next day, he admitted he wasn't there.

When all was said and done, Highland Inn refused to refund my money because I didn't cancel and I ended up paying even more for the Holiday Inn.  I reported the Highland Inn to the Better Business Bureau so my complaint was on record, but they still refused to refund my money.

On a positive note, Orbitz did get 5 stars for their help.  After the hotel refused to pay the last time, Orbitz provided me with a $70 credit to use on any purchase in the future.  I give them a lot of credit for the way they handled it.

Stayed here for the 4th of July weekend so paid more than it was worth.  The room was clean and had recently been updated.  Flat screen television and name brand lotions/soaps/etc.  Bed was ok. Fridge but no blow dryer or microwave or coffee pot.   Located next to Applybe's and Carrows so late night food cravings are covered.  The WiFi was free but spotty.  It worked fine in the coffee area of the hotel but the room did not want to connect until after putting my personal password to log into my computer after I had already unlocked my computer.  Seemed strange so did not take a chance and stayed on smartphone instead.  Manager was very friendly.  Check out is immediately at 1100 am because we heard a man complaining that all his luggage had been removed from the room.  He thought checkout was 12.  A small bear cub wandered near the apartments next door so that was pretty cool in such a urban area.  The marina/beach are only a 6 minute walk.  The location is very good.  Numerous food options nearby and short walk to casinos if you are into that kind of thing.  Very close to Heavenly Gondola ride which is awesome all year long.   They have small hot tub for 4 but did not use.  Second floor was hot but quiet.  Room has AC but it can be loud if it is a warm day.  Room phone did not have a dial tone.  Also it is pet friendly which makes up for a lot since there a few places that allow pets.   Raley's is across the street for quick grocery shopping.  Starbucks and Seattle's best coffee are within walking distance as is the movie theatre.

This is the first time that my family and I have stayed at any hotel in South Lake Tahoe so I had to do my homework on hotels for it. The reviews that I had read about this place were ok so I figured hell why not. I called a week before we wanted to go and made reservations, the manager of the hotel I spoke to was Moe he quoted me 49.99 a night. When I told him that a travel website said 39.99 he matched it. Upon the day of arrival I had checked in with the front counter and was helped by Moe. Moe is very friendly and will answer any ? you may have about the town. I asked for a 2nd room floor and said that he didnt have any available which was fine. He did reassure me that noone was above us in that room above us. I was very pleased at the room cleanliness, and size for the price. As I did my intial walk-thru to see how nice it was I noticed bamboo flooring in the room, very nice actually. Pedistool sink in the bathroom area, along with a common sized shower. I was happy to say that the tv we had was a 42" LG which my 2 year old son enjoyed watching his yo gabba gabba, and Mickeys playhouse on. The only downside to this hotel was the internet was working at times and when I asked the overnight manager about it he said that the company was coming out the next day to fix it and extend the range of it. When we came back to the hotel the 2nd night I can honestly say they fixed the internet and had added the extenders, although they were finishing them when we checked out today. I will be booking the 2 double rooms next time for sure since it looks alolt more decorated than a king size bed room did. I give this place a 3.5 stars.

The pictures look good on the web site, but looks can be deceiving.  The floor was hardwood with no rugs.  Only heather was an old wall heater.  The bed seemed to be new, but was very low to the ground.  No hair dryer.  The shower head was so high that I had to stand on the shower ledge to move it.  There was dirt behind the doors and under the tables.  Not someplace I'll go again or recommend.

I'll be honest... it's not the best of place, but it does have a great location. Real close to the casinos (walking distance) and near the lifts. Highland Inn recently had an up grade to its inside. New decor which puts a nice homey feel to it and great TVs! If your going to be shredding the Mountains for the weekend/week days and not for the elegance of Tahoe this is your place.

This is a decent place to stay if you're looking for an inexpensive, no-frills hotel in South Lake Tahoe. We visited during the winter months, and after checking in with a notably eccentric desk clerk, found our freezing cold room. We had no luck with what we thought was the heater (turned out to be the air conditioner), but my boyfriend learned from Mr. eccentric that the "fire place" (ie glass box with fake flames) is also a heating source.f

We went out to the casinos, which are about three blocks away, and by the time we returned the room was toasty. The shower is small, but decent, and the bed was comfortable. We were able to find wireless (I think it was from a nearby hotel), and we had a nice evening. The power went out, so when we woke up we had no clue what time it was. I don't know if you can blame that on the Highland Inn?

The next day we packed up our car and then trekked about two blocks to the Heavenly Gondola. Location-wise, this hotel is perfect.

For $99/night in So Lake Tahoe, the Highland Inn is a decent choice.

great place for the price. the place was clean, nice wooden floor (not the usual stained carpet), modern interior. flat screen tvs. shower stalls only.

we payed 85 online, but some here claim to have payed 60? i dunno.

its nicely located too.  i can recommend it

negatives: wifi (free) didnt work. shower stall is a bit small.

edit: some claim to have payed even less. like $50. looks like i got screwed by whatever hotel search website we used.

First of all, I'm rating this based on my knowledge of an inn. I'm not comparing it to a 5-star hotel, but I'm comparing it to other inns that I have stayed in so far. Great location, no doubt. We went to Kirkwood, and stayed here overnight before driving back to SF the next day. All furniture looks brand new. Hardwood floor which I like coz it looks cleaner than carpet. However, I wet one of the towels and mob the floor and guess what, the towel turned to as black as it can get. Good thing I brought a flip flop, so I wore my flip flop the whole night. There is no hair dryer (wish I knew). I didnt bring one, and I had to wash my hair after skiing all day. So, bring your own hair dryer. The bed is king size but doesnt have enough padding so I felt like sleeping on a piece of board. Last but not least, the heater did NOT work!!!!! OMG. If only the comforter was thick enough to keep me warm, but it's just a single sheet plus the cover. Seriously, I know it's an Inn, but at least make it worth the money at least (paid $100/night).

You get what you pay for. Not top notch, but was a great hotel room on the strip in South Lake for $60 on a Friday night. Cute decor. My husband and I booked the room with a king size bed and then a couple friends of ours decided they wanted to come along too. So, when we arrived (at around midnight) we asked if we could switch to a 2 double beds room and the guy said it would be $20 extra, my husband told him that there's no way that he's going to sell the other room at this point in the night, so they guy let us slide on the $20 charge. The beds were a nice size and comfy enough. The man running the front counter was a little off, but just grin and bear it and you'll be fine. I'd say that I'll definitely be using the Highland Inn again in the near future.

My husband and I stayed there at the beginning of this month, and we actually really liked it. Big comfy king size beds and giant pillows, big flatscreen tvs, and lots of space. The room was really nice, very simple design and ambiance, and we were really happy with it.

The reason they're not 4 stars (which the room deserved to be) was because I tried to book one of their special packages and never heard back. I had booked the room on hotels.com , and then noticed they had other packages listed on their website. I called and e-mailed, and got no response. We were a little disappointed.

If you're looking for a good, clean, comfortable room right next to downtown South Lake Tahoe, the Highland Inn is a great choice. But it seems like they're mostly good for the room, and maybe not much else.

My Fiance and I stayed here last April for a snowboarding trip, the prior trip we had stayed at the motel 8 and I insisted that I picked the room this time because the motel 8 was a little dirty. We got to there late in the evening and was greeted by a man at the front desk. He was polite but I could tell he had some health problems to the point were we felt bad asking questions, he was struggling to catch his breathe while he talked. We got into our room and began getting ready for bed, one in bed I noticed something black on the sheets. Didn't know what it was and I am not terribly high  maintenance so I went to the desk told them and let them know if they gave me new sheets I would change them. Shortly after changing the sheets we realized the floors were covered in dirt that we were tracking into our bed from walking on the floor. The bed was comfortable so we went to bead and headed for Sierra at Tahoe the next morning.

After returning to the hotel our snow gear got the floor wet and it pretty much became a muddy mess. The price is decent but at least the motel 8 floors are not mud pits. The bed was comfortable but its hard to sleep when you can see black crud all over the sheets. Decent location, room pictures online are a bit deceiving the paint job is sloppy so the modern look is nice but my son does better finger paintings than the paint job this place has.

I left a pair of gray Vans that were pretty new I called at least six times in 2 weeks and was never able to get a hold of anyone. If anyone finds my shoes please let me know I will be anywhere but the Highland Inn

Pleasantly surprised. Newly redecorated and very clean.  At the price it was, we expected decor from the 70's complete with shag carpet on the ceilings.  Thankfully, nope - it has been recently re-developed.  The rooms were clean, uncluttered and airy.

The help was nice enough, but not overly chatty which I prefer.  They knew the area well and were helpful when asked for suggestions!

We will certainly consider this location for another visit if we go back over the Summer.  I don't think it was "warm" enough to be considered by me for the Winter, but then I'm partial to fireplaces when coming off the slopes.

Just concluded a stay at the Highland Inn, and it turned out to be a great value for the money. First off, the room had recently been refurbished (and that's quite possibly true of the entire hotel at this point) and it was cozy with a hard-wood floor, a very comfortable king-size bed and a new large flat-screen TV. The hotel is located just a short walk from the Heavenly Valley gondola, which means not only can you ski with minimum hassle, but you can also stroll the shops and eat at the restaurants in the evening with no need to jump in the car. A short walk gets you to the casinos should you feel compelled to gamble. You'll find a Starbucks across the street, and just a short walk gets you to a local coffee purveyor: Alpen Sierra Coffee Roasting Company, so the morning caffeine dose is more than adequately covered.

I hate noise, and I love convenience, but I also don't like spending a lot. And that combination has put me on a quest to find the "sweet spot" in the neighborhood of the Heavenly gondola. I'm pretty sure that Highland Inn is it. For a location right on Highway 50 it was adequately quiet. I've stayed at more expensive locations nearby (just look at a map and you'll know which ones I mean) both on and off the highway and I found that I wasn't kept awake by road noise at the Highland Inn. Maybe I was just lucky this time--I don't really think so--but it means I'd be happy to come back. Highland Inn was also more reasonably priced than the nearby competitors. I got in for a total price of just over $38 per night for 3 nights during the spring ski season. Less money and better sleep? That's a winning combination in my book.

If you're looking for high-end luxury, you'd certainly be happier elsewhere, but you'll pay dearly for it in South Lake Tahoe. On the other hand, if you're looking for a good room close to the gondola you'd be hard-pressed to find a better value than the Highland Inn.

The hotel has a really nice location, but the service is extremely bad and the rooms were very uncomfortable. One of the employees was drunk when we came in at 1:30am. The sheets on the bed were also dirty, and the rooms smelt bad. When I booked online the pictures showed one thing but the hotel itself was the total opposite. In the middle of the night the electricity goes out in a few rooms and it takes a while to get it to come back on. The Wi-Fi also was really slow and was unresponsive at times. Not a place I would ever recommend.

Taking a last minute trip to Lake Tahoe in the summer left me with no option but to stay at the Highland Inn.  There was no vacancy anywhere until I stumbled upon a deal (not really a great one) online for this motel.  I decided to Yelp the Inn before booking online and considering the pictures that were posted, it didn't look too bad.  Looked clean, modern decor, great location.. what the hell, take my money!  As we check in and step into our long awaited room, i notice the 52" flat screen TV smackdown on the wall... not too shabby.  I look around the room and at first sight looked very clean and comfy, but as i looked a little closer the room started to give me the creepers.  First, the room had an old motel stench which was quickly resolved with a couple of Tree Car Freshners stashed in my SUV.  The upgraded decor was falling apart which unmasked the old motel feel behind it..  The room had a very bad ventilation system,  so if someone decides to use the potty, the stink will hover throughout the entire room.. believe me, i know.  The room had wooden flooring which i didn't really think much of until it rained one day and mud tracks became a problem.  The worse part of our room was that there were tiny webslingers everywhere.  There were spiders coming out of the AC unit, the heater, on the bed, from the ceiling.. i told front desk about the spider infestation and he came in and offered to change our sheets.  As he pulled the covers off, there were black and yellow stains on the mattress.  Our 3 day stay was not anywhere near pleasant, but they did offer a full refund which earned them a brownie point and the location was great, central to numerous venues in lake tahoe.. 2nd brownie point.  Thats my story..

Tried to book a room here for one night during our drive across the country. We are traveling with a cat so even though the website says "Pets Allowed", I decided to e-mail just to be sure that cats were ok. Good thing I did, because the person e-mailing me about my reservation told me cats were great, gave us a great rate for a room and said they would need a credit card to hold it. When we called to leave credit card information, the person who answered the phone told us that cats were NOT allowed. Make sure you triple check!

Modern, clean, fantastic location, modern, pet friendly.

    Minuses:
Rude and unhelpful front desk staff, creepy male room attendant, free wi-fi that only works in the office, cramped shower stall.

Price was fantastic for this place, rooms were clean and it had a fridge that actually worked. If I had to be picky I would only have two complaints, the room was dimly lit even with all the lights on and the wireless was shotty at best. There is a Starbucks across the street though if you really need it.

I stayed here mid-week, last week. I liked it. It isn't like staying at the fancy hotels or casinos, but it was nice, clean, and very conveniently located to the Heavenly gondola. The decor is IKEA with bamboo floors and a nice flat screen TV- which is much nicer than old carpet, and 70's hotel style you get in  a lot of cheaper hotels.

We had a room with a King sized bed. There was a mini fridge in the room which was convenient. The shower in the bathroom wasn't to small, and there was great water pressure, and lots of hot water.

I had to ask the manager for a hair dryer- I was a little worried after reading another reviewer's tale of the power going out repeatedly while trying to dry her hair. The manager did tell me to turn off all the lights except the one in the bathroom and to turn off the tv while using it. I did turn off the lights, but left the TV on. There was NO issue with the power. Maybe it was because it was mid-week in the early Spring, and there weren't many other people in the hotel, so the power wasn't being strained by other people in the hotel.

I did have some problems with the wifi, like others. My iPhone said it had a connection, yet I couldn't actually get a server connection if I didn't also have a G3 connection. The 3G(AT&T) seemed to come and go- I sometimes got I there, sometimes not. I could always get a signal on the other side of the street. That wasn't a deal killer for me.

The heater clanked a bit, but wasn't too annoying- it's definitely an older building. Our last night there, a party was in the room above us and were stumbling around dropping things on the floor until about 11PM. That was the only time I wished they had carpet on the floor, to muffle the sound. But they settled down before we got too cranky. Next time I will probably ask for an upper floor room to avoid that. I would definitely return.

We like to wing it when we go to Tahoe, in hopes that we find an affordable hotel. We drove around after a long day of boarding, and came across this place. The guy at the front desk was nice, even cracked some jokes at my boyfriend. I liked him. $60 for a night. Not too bad for Tahoe last minute. The room was a good size. Loved that it had a fridge, since we had snacks. Heater was strong. Bed was fairly comfortable. And close enough to walk around and shop. Only complaints:
    1) Small, small stand up shower. Really wanted a tub to soak in!
    2) Wooden floors. Nice wooden floors. (great for wet feet and clothes). But COLD wooden floors.

I would definitely stay here again.

Our stay was pretty hilarious. We had four adults and one lab in a double-bed room. While it was a tight squeeze, the room was clean and modern and comfortable enough.

The hilarity ensued when our electricity went out 5 TIMES in 30 minutes. The first time, it occurred while I was blow drying my hair and my friends were just sitting on the bed watching tv. I went to the front desk to report the power going out and the guy just looked at me and said "you were blow drying, weren't you." As if it was like .... stupid girl - EVERYONE knows you can't blow dry your hair here. He seemed to think that if we turned off the TV and the lights while running the blow dryer, that we should be ok.

So I ask my friends for 60 seconds of silence and dark so that I wouldn't have to go out into the 30 degree weather with wet hair. They agree. 5 seconds in- power goes out. So i give up. And then while running nothing but the TV, it proceeds to happen 3 more times.

Next time, I will splurge to someplace where both the lights and the TV can be on at the same time (novelty!) without causing a full blown power failure.

I'm a little late with this review.... we stayed here back in April.  We decided to take an impromptu trip to tahoe during off season.   We looked for a place that could accomodate  me, the bf, the 4 year old, the 80 pound dog and my friend and her  2 kids (ages 8 and 12).  We came across the Highland Inn -   hotels.com said they had a 3 bedroom suite for only $149.  I was thinking it would probably just be 3 regular motel rooms that could be joined by opening up the doors.   I was wrong!  It is a fabulous 3 bedroom, 2 bath apartment with a full kitchen, washer and dryer, dining room, living room and large patio.   It was great, so much room!  And unfortunately, my friend cancelled at the last minute so we had the whole place for just the 3 of us and the dog - we didn't know what to do with so much space!  It is great that there is no weight limit on dogs.

The man at the front desk was totally sweet, I don't know why so many people have said he is rude??  He was very kind and accomodating to us.

The only cons were that the hardwood floor was dirty, our socks ended up black on the bottoms!  And there was a smell from paint and work being done shortly before we arrived but it wasn't too bad.  Oh and the tv didn't work very well, it only got a couple channels.

We will definitely go back again and hopefully bring some more people!

The other two Yelp reviewers didn't seem too happy with their stay at Highland Inn, but perhaps their reviews helped my fiancé and I to have a better experience.

We booked our one night stay through Orbitz for $74, so we were happy to get a deal. This was our first time in South Lake Tahoe so we weren't even sure where and how close the Inn would be to everything else. We were pleasantly surprised to see how close it was to everything! It's literally walking distance to all the shops, ski lift and stateline casinos.

The owner, the older gentleman with a thick accent welcomed us and insisted that my fiancé take me out to the shops and buy me something nice. He had a funny charm to him, and quickly handed us our card key. Our room was on the ground level. We knew we weren't going to stay in an extravagant room and thought the room was rather perfect for our spontaneous weekend getaway.

It had a small studio feel to it, with a small refrigerator, small desk, and attached sink and shower. The room was nicely heated when we entered and found it very easy to control the temperature. The room even had a large LG flat screen TV with cable which came in handy when we stayed in to eat our delicious Bob Dog Pizza.

!!! - The one complaint I would have is that they should either purchase new pillow cases and sheets or get a better cleaning service to wash them. I'm a little obsessive when it comes to staying in hotels, so I always bring my own pillows, sheets, towels, scented candle, and comfy blanket. It's a good thing I did because I quickly noticed small stains on a few of the pillowcases and sheets. Oh no, I am not having that! It's pretty nasty if you think about it, so I would advise you to bring your own stuff too. It will make your stay more comfortable.

But you can't beat the price and location of Highland Inn, so I definitely recommend it along with my advice on bringing your own comfy sleepy stuff to fully enjoy your bargain stay!

After a really bad experience at another hotel, thankfully Highland Inn had a room available for us last minute.  The good things?  Great location, very nice staff, clean rooms, nice new beds, bedding, plasma tv.  The bad?  Horrible Internet, heat that worked on and off and little things like there was no blow drier in our room but there was an iron and ironing board.  And while the wood floors are a nice touch, they are frigid in on those cold nights.  But all in all, good experience, wonderful location -- worth checking out.

FIRST consider the price before you listen to any of the reviews. The cost is awesome considering the location. I've stayed here twice. The rooms are clean. The place does the job. Beds are fine. Also, if you have dogs, they allow them.

Note: Our heater didn't work becuase the pilot light was out but there is always someone on duty so we let them know and it was fixed right away. There wasn't a blowdryer in the room so we borrowed one and they did tell us that the electricity goes out so we had to turn the lights off. This may be a big deal to some people but I did my hair during the day and it was no biggie... and don't forget to consider THE COST

This place was a pleasant surprise for the price and location. It is reasonably priced (not super expensive) for the location. It's near all the hotels, food, beach, and gondola. Real ideal spot! We came here because we were looking for a dog friendly hotel. The place was clean and had a nice shower. There wasn't a hair dryer though.. So make sure to bring one. My dog kept jumping off the bed which I'm sure was annoying to the people below us. I would try to get on 2nd floor so you don't have to be bothered by people above you. I would stay again for a cheap and pretty decent stay. I probably wouldn't stay here though if I wanted a nicer more luxury hotel stay.

$100 cheaper per night than the Holiday Inn next door - an excellent value.

It was one of those days where everything went wrong, and we found ourselves hot, tired and without a place to stay. We thought maybe the Holiday Inn would have a good deal on a room; we were shocked to find they wanted $169 a night.

We went next door and they had a clean, recently updated room with a king sized bed and fridge for $65.00 a night. The bed was comfy, the towels were decent quality, and the tv was a large flat screen. The wifi connection was a bit spotty, but it's free. The guys who work there are old-school locals, and they were very helpful.

The location is excellent, just blocks from the lake, the lifts and the casinos. There's no reason to spend more than you have to on a room.

Room Tip: Try to get a room near the back, away from Lake Tahoe Blvd.

What a pleasant surprise. We didn't have very high expectations but this is a great little place. Very clean, good AC, very comfortable bed and cute decor. The linens were super soft, and there was some kind of mattress topper that made the bed feel luxurious. At $75 a night during the 4th of July weekend, this was a great deal.

We paid more for the rest of the weekend at one of the resort hotels and they had no AC, scratchy linens, and not enough pillows. Should have stayed longer at the Highland Inn.

Location is great as well. Right in the middle of town, easy to walk to everything, free parking. Great little spot. I'd stay here again.

I don't care what anyone says, I love this hotel. My boyfriend and I go to Tahoe twice a month at least for a couple of days depending if he has to work down there or just to go to Tahoe for Pizza at Base Camp. This hotel is perfect for us, the bed is soft and cozy, it has a plasma and it's decent unlike Horizon Hotel with just a old school television and nasty thin blankets, I hate horizon, we always book here at highland inn and the receptionist guy/ check in person is amazing, I love great customer service and he has it. He's nice and funny. Very sweet to us and asks us our preference where we want to stay. He's helpful plus the price is incredible, very cheap and sometimes it's ever  cheaper when you book for a week or a couple days. People look on the outside and pass it up because it's not "flashy" with big lights or lots of rooms but it's the inside that seals the deal. It makes me feel comfortable with the ikea furniture, it's walking distance from food, shops and Starbucks. We will be here soon again!

Me and the family were in town for a Wood Bat Softball Tournament at Incline Village so I needed a place to stay that permitted pets. I found this place and was very sorry I did. The best part of this hotel is that it is well located on South Lake Tahoe Blvd and centrally located, walking distance to Harvey's and Harrah's casinos if that is your deal (pardon the pun) as well as situated between Applebee's and Carrows if you like that kind of food. Across the street you will find a strip mall that has a Starbucks and Raleys Supermarket. The major minus are no wi-fi internet working as advertised, the pet cost is $20.00 per night, and the noise that I experienced from the nasty, obnoxious people staying above me was unacceptable especially at 1:00 am. The manager is kinda weird, friendly enough when he answers the phone but you would never guess the guy actually works there.  The room is ok, has a nice flat screen with cable, has a little frig, AC, and the room is clean.
Just did not work for me.

Well all I have to say is I can't even believe there is a king room this close to the gondolas/casinos under $75 a night in South Lake that is this clean! Literally a block from everything!! The rooms in this motel have been updated with some modern touches (platform beds with new comforters, low profile IKEA type furnishing and stainless steel finishes...small but clean and updated shower/toilet room, pedestal sink, flat screen tv, free wireless Internet and mini fridge), dog friendly with a nice little field for the pup to cruise and 2 blocks from lake Tahoe or Heavenly gondola. It was below 20 outside but our room stayed consistently warm, with plenty of room for all of our gear and snowboards. 70's music genre decor in the breezeway and lobby. The staff was laid back, friendly and accommodating (we checked in after midnight). Would recommend and will definitely be booking here again in the future. If you're going big; looking for spas, room service and jet tubs then look elsewhere,  but if you're looking to hit the hill and live it up outside your lodging then this place is a steal to rest your head at the end of your days adventure! Oh and the organic toiletries were a nice touch as well!

I booked this inn via Bringfido.com because I like traveling with my dog. I drove up to see an almost Dutch-like inn. cute! We were greeted by a friendly older man at the office and check-in was a breeze. My room was was cute, in fact. The place is newly remodeled. But you can tell, it was a small budget remodel. Some things were not done with quality in mind. However, my overall stay here was great. I got a decent, warm and comfortable place to sleep and that's really what I want. The inn is in a perfect location! A walking distance from Harrah's and the other casinos, across the street from Heavenly, restaurants and shops. To me this place is perfect, especially when I'm on a tight budget! I will definitely stay here on my next Tahoe trip!

The rooms were nice, small but we didn't mind them. Very clean but the bathroom didn't have shower towels which didn't end up mattering later (read on!). Originally we thought the customer service was great (even though one gentleman always smelled of alcohol). However, during our stay the power was out through the city from the time we checked in until about 10 pm. We understood this was out of control of the hotel but they never turned the hot water back on or reset the wifi. We spent most of our stay in the dark and after wandering in the rain for hours we just wanted a shower the next morning but it was cold. They told us they would have management call to discuss a refund. I called them at least 7 times and they promised to return my message but never did. My boyfriend eventually got ahold of them and basically they told him they weren't sorry for what happened and they weren't refunding, then they hung up on him. Stay away from this hotel unless you wanna be ripped off!

Awesome place to stay for a cheap quick vacation. We decided last minute to head to Tahoe for Oktoberfest (also fun) and this is the deal we scored. Very close to the casinos. It was pretty basic, so no luxuries here but with so much to see and do in Tahoe, I really don't spend a lot of time in the room. Comfy beds and and easy going atmosphere. It was one of the cleanest rooms I've stayed in in years, which was a plus. Weather was cold but the heater in the room worked well and was so quiet we didn't realize it was even on until the 2nd day.  Trippy rock posters randomly placed but they scored points for having a Dead poster up by one of the stairwells. Really great location considering some of the places right next door or across the street are super expensive. And unlike some places nearby the wifi is free! I'd stay here again for a quick getaway, it was perfect!

For the price, Highland Inn may be a deal since every other hotel is insanely expensive.  However, I have stayed at much cheaper hotels with better rooms.  Unfortunately you are paying for the location which drives the cost up.

My room was decent, but it didn't feel clean.  There was a stench and the floors were quite grimey.  I felt I needed shower shoes for sure.

The room is very small, but it does have what you need - a bed and bathroom. They offer minimal amenities, so don't expect a tooth brush!  You will get some nice smelling body soap though.

Parking is free.  There are a lot of restaurants around too.  The downside is that you have to drive a far distance to get to some of the good ski resorts, so watch the time or else you might miss out!

One more lucky pick from hotwire.com during another sporadic snowboarding trip to Tahoe! This time in south lake Tahoe, where it's a little more crowded and prices are a little higher. This place was showing good reviews.  Plus, it's right across from Heavenly and fairly close to Sierra Tahoe and Kirkwood ski resorts, and it was within walking distance from casinos and stores so we decided to just book it.  It doesn't really look like much on the outside... Driving up, you think that it might just be like the little shady cheapo inns in the area but far from it.  It tries to be pretty modernized (you could tell from the sheets, shower curtain and overall decor) and the guy working the front desk is super nice; he waits up for guests who book through third party sites (i.e. hotwire, expedia, etc etc) since they never specify their check-in times and sometimes they don't arrive until 4am! Those times must suck!

The room had almost everything a standard high quality hotel would have... the only thing missing was a hair dryer! I mean, they even had an ironing board!  There was a King bed, coffee maker, large plasma TV, refrigerator, ice bucket, little bottles of shampoo and lotion and soap and a large magnifying mirror in the bathroom...  It was comfortable enough (as was the bed), heat warmed up the room nicely and we got to keep our beer and water cool!  Yes, it is hardwood floors and yes, it would easily get wet and dirty if it's snowing/raining outside but if you leave your shoes and equipment somewhere near the door you wouldn't have a problem with muddy floors or getting your sheets dirty.... just saying...  Anyway, I don't really have anything big to complain about - satisfied customer right here.  :)

Where do I start? I am highly upset that I have to say this place disappoints me! I've heard great reviews about this place, not only from reading about it but also from individuals who has been here several times.

So this past Easter I had booked my stay at Highland Inn for Saturday night, 3 bed room suite from Expedia. Not only was I able to book but the guy who works &/or is in charge of the front desk calls & said "unfortunately the room is unavailable" bcus it was "under water damage" & said they were willing to accommodate me with only 1 room with 2 beds? So I said forget it. I would understand if he said 2 rooms, knowingly that I needed at least 3 beds. But this wasn't just it..
I ended up canceling my stay & he said he would give me a full refund, no problem.

I called back a week or 2 later, still haven't received my refund & the same guy picks up & says he wasn't able to do the refund. He had to wait for his manager to come in & also told me his manager was out of town & won't be back 'til the following day. I called back again & he said his manager still hadn't came in yet. So he took down my name & number & told me he will let the manager know as soon as he get in.
Weeks has pasted. Still no call........!

I gave them another call. Same guy picks up & tells me he remembers me & told me that he had gave his manager my name & number already & that he should've contacted me by now & told me he will remind his manager again.

    & still no call....

What pisses me off is that every time I tried calling for his manager he told me his manager wasn't in, no matter what the hours were when I called & to top it off; it just kept sounding like the front desk guy kept giving me bs excuses. I've been waiting for my refund since march & still no calls from them. I've called days after days & still nothing!

What a waste of my time & my money! Thanks for nothing Highland Inn.

Last minute trip to Heavenly right before New Year's Eve / Snowglobe, so hotels everywhere in South Lake Tahoe were charging up the butt.  Highland Inn was no exception, but it was on the cheaper end.  I had never stayed in South Lake Tahoe before, so I was just really taking a shot in the dark and hoping that I was reasonably close to Heavenly.

Heavenly shows up as 3860 Saddle Road on Google Maps, so I thought that Highland would be far from the slopes.  Wrong!  There's a gondola that takes you up to Heavenly on Park Ave right around the Marriott Plaza, so Highland = less than a 5 min block away!

Casinos are also a 10 minute walk away sooooo that's also nice (:

There's also a ski / snowboard rental place attached to Highland that sells a bunch of other stuff for a lot cheaper than the Heavenly store does at the Marriott Plaza thing.

The inn itself is fine.  It's reasonably clean, has a fridge, and the shower is pretty strong.  There are a lot of TV channels, but internet is awful.  Gas station is less than a block away, and there's a Starbucks, Subway, Applebees,.. aka anything you might need within a 1 minute walk!

This is the most unprofessional business I have ever worked with. We had our workers stay the week there while we did business and they over-charged us, charged our credit card prior to us checking out AND never gave us a receipt of our stay or credit card transaction.
The clerk always sounded drunk or high or asleep.  He never had any answers and always blamed his manager or his manager's wife (who were never around).
What kind of business hangs up on you when you call to request of receipt?  What kind of business does not return your calls or emails?
We will NEVER seek business at this hotel/Inn again and we would not recommend it to anyone else.
Good luck to all patrons of this place.

Awful. Customer. Service. Not even if it was free.

Would not stay here again. Not because of the rooms. They were nice. Not because of the location. It was convenient. Not because of the fire in the building. These things happen. Not because of the power outage. It is a mountain town. And not because of the no hot water in the building. Ok, actually because of the no hot water, that was the last straw. I'd give this place no stars if I could.

I felt really ripped off. This business took no accountability.

Prices were doubled the weekend of our stay because of a golf tournament. Took half an hour for the clerk to check us in and 3 tries before we got a working key.  We were awakened the next morning at 6am with a pounding on the door that there was a fire in the building. Spent over an hour in the parking lot, in the rain, but hey, we were in Tahoe and the building didn't burn down.

That evening the power went out in the entire town. The front desk was completely ill-equipped to handle the situation. When you run a hospitality business in a mountain town you have to be prepared for power outages especially when it rains and such. Yes, it sucks and affects your bottom line but you have to be able to provide things like candles and matches and maybe even flashlights. That would have changed this from a no star to a five star review.

It was like paying $150. a night to camp. Bring your own candles. Bring your own matches. Bring your own flashlights. Bring your own water heater...which was the last straw. We hadn't pitched a tent and we weren't camping. We were paying for such amenities that were not provided.

Our final morning we thought we'd take one final dip in the lake then a hot shower and that continental breakfast they had promised before we hit the road until we learned from our neighbor that there was not hot water in the building. So that was it.

Had similar experiences in dealing with front desk and manager or lack thereof as other reviewers. Under the influence. Emails bounce back, calls unanswered..just a gross business ethic. Disappointing.

    I highly recommend this place.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this place because of the location near a sweet rock climbing spot - the 90ft. wall. We didn't even realize that we were so close to Heavenly! We're not skiers or snowboarders :P

The guy at the front desk was so very friendly and accommodating. He gave us one of their best rooms - room 212 - away from traffic noise. I must say for the price I paid, it was WORTH IT! The bed was SO comfortable (and the pillows); everything was very clean; it looked like NEW towels because of how white it was....etc. I liked how rustic it was on the outside because it reminded me of Yosemite.

Pet friendly place, too! We had our dog stay in the room and he didn't make any sound or destroy anything :P

It was pretty quiet; I didn't hear any of my neighbors or people walking around.

Overall, great hospitality. I'd definitely come back :)

So much smell in bedrooms.  We bought the room from expedia and paid in full still they charged us $65.00 on our credit card and when we call no one returned our call back. They should hire people in front who are not drugs taker
Nothing was working in the room
Only good thing is the location
My advice before check out ask them to give u something in writing don't just leave or u r going to end up paying extra

What's with the subpar reviews?  I found the Inn cozy and affordable; and the location is top notch.  Our room was clean and the shower pressure was out of this world.

To those complaining about WiFi: There's a Starbucks across the street.  You're in Lake Tahoe...take a hike.
