The first day that we arrived for a weeks stay, we found the pool was filthy and in need of a good cleaning, two days later it was finally cleaned and usable. The hotel is OLD, but the room was clean and the bed was comfortable....we paid around $53  CHEAP when compared to places like the FIRESIDE LOUNGE which is a lot nicer but around $140 per night.
On the third night after arriving to get to sleep, within 15 minutes we heard many people talking loudly outside our bedroom and made no complaints, but after finally falling asleep we were awakened by tons of banging on the walls behind the bed and above us (this was 12:20 AM) and so I was really pissed off that the hotel staff didn't do anything about it on their own, so I called and told them to deal with this rowdy group so that I could get some shut-eye, and a half hour later it was quiet., so they did as they said they would and I really appreciated it!

The day we were to leave I confirmed that  check-out was at 11 AM and one of my friends needed to use the shower so we went back to the hotel at 10:30 and found that they had prepared the room for the next guest despite not having checked out yet (can we say rushing albiet prematurely)
My friend needed to take a shower here due to his RV having water pump problems but he was forced to use a different room which had a batheroom which he described as very used and dirty and I was imbarrised that he couldn't use the bathroom in our room when I hadn't even checked out yet! The room was ours till 11 AM and the hotel staff should have checked with us (they had my cell #) to see if we were done with it before cleaning it up for the next guest.

The Indian Lady up front was really nice to us otherwise and she upgraded us to an efficiency without ever requesting such. The Materhorn  is slightly unorganized when compared to a higher quality inn... they had a coffee maker in the kitchenete but they had  NOT PROVIDED COFFEE, SUGAR, OR ANYTHING THAT we would have needed to make a cup of coffee. My son checked out the place and went to the refrigerator where he discovered some Ben & Jerry's ice cream that he thought the motel provided...I told him that that was highly unlikely and sure enough it was 1/4 full and had remained in the room after some previous guest (not a huge deal) but it showed some lack of attention to cleaning, that's all!
We eventually checked out and after arriving back home in OC my son realized that he had left his electric tooth brush in the bathroom and it did not get packed up...so I immediately called the hotel to see if their cleaning staff had brought this to the office's lost and found, but the young man (the Indian Lady's son  said they do not keep anything and everything just gets thrown out! NO CUSTOMER SERVICE THERE...like it would kill them to have a lost and found box and keep things for a meager 48 hours before tossing it out....I 'm a parent who understands the needs of kids, so If your kid would leave a blankie or stuffed animal or toy at this hotel, they have no regard for
the EMOTIONAL VALUE to a child.

All I rmember was the end of our conversation and the young man reading THEIR POLICY ON LOST OR STOLEN PROPERTY...which was completely unecessary and quite rude I felt.

The next day the nice lady hotel manager called me to let me know that her husband had found this toothbrush and a comb and placed it in a lost & found (something the young man had denyed even having) but I was so grateful that the father had the good sense to keep our items that I have upgraded this motel to 4 stars...as is typical sometimes younger people just don't get it about how to treat people while in a "SERVICE BUSINESS' and I think that a review of the situation with Dad & Mom would help the boy to understand how to address these situation in the fututre.
I therefore can recommend this Motel for families....It's just a cheap alternative and I chose it due to ratings and not the price!

This place is so great! By far the BEST customer service I have ever received at a cheap hotel. Family owned and opperated by a great family.

We stayed here for a week, the family is wonderful and so nice.  We had a unit with an adorable little kitchen for a small extra fee.  They offer great weekly deals during the off season.  The motels towards the y are much nicer then the ones towards the casinos, stayed on the casino side before we found the Matterhorn.  It is a basic motel, but clean and quiet, probably one of the best in south lake.  5 stars for south lake standards.

I stayed here because of reviews I read that were decent. We went this past weekend for a wedding, so I give 1 star for being clean, 1 for being cheap, and 1 for pretty good customer service. The heater worked great, and our room was small so it heated up pretty quickly (2 queens, a microwave, and mini fridge). Our party had 3 other rooms so I also saw the room with the kitchen that has a stove in it! (that deserved another star) They have several configurations of rooms available that fit your family's needs. Now for the not-so-good: the parking lot was VERY crowded and hard to maneuver in, we could hear street traffic at night, and there was a loud, weird cracking noise that would go off every now and then for no reason. We think it might have been something to do with the heater, not sure. Overall, you can't beat the price, and it's about a 10-15 min drive from Sierra at Tahoe, so I'd definitely stay here again.

All i have to say the Best customer service I've ever had at a motel. I stayed here for one night and didn't get into town until late, they were more then happy to have me as a guest so late at night. She even offered me a room at a discounted price for a month until i found housing since I'm moving up here for the winter. Early in the morning i needed an iron and they were more then happy to accommodate my needs. My room was descent as well. Its your typical king size motel bed and the room came w an amazing heater that only took seconds to warm up the room. if your not to picky about your room and just need somewhere to crash and don't want to spend big bucks i suggest you stay here, you'll feel so welcomed.

My husband and I have season passes to Kirkwood and were looking for a cheap place to stay on a regular weekend basis that was not in the midst of the casinos and was a bit closer to Kirkwood.  We were so lucky to find the Matterhorn!  This motel is reasonably priced and the customer service is amazing.  The motel is family owned and all of the family members who have helped us have been great!  Make sure you call the motel directly to make reservations.  They will honor any internet deal and that way the corporate money sucking vacuum machine does not take away a huge percentage in commission from the small family owned business.  Rooms with kitchens are available and it's even dog friendly!  Highly recommended!

Needed an emergency place while a friend of mine ended up in the Hospital. It is right down the street from the Hospital and the couple that owns this place is as friendly and accomodating as can be.

The room was clean and comfortable and She even brought us a coffee pot when I asked if they had some.

What a gem!!!

This is a great family run budget motel.  The family that runs this is very nice and the rooms are very well maintained.  Very clean place.  I used this place many times when I was looking for a place to live up there and was glad I did.  They go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. If you are on a budget like I was I highly recommend this over the chain motels.

Lesson learned;  you really do get what you pay for. I found this hotel on Priceline and will never stay here again.
My Fiance and I were up looking at wedding venues and wanted to keep our trip low cost. Upon arrival, we learned our standard King room had been given away and instead were placed into a 2 Queen room. Okay whatever, I can deal with that.
Entering the room; we noticed four things right away:
1. One of the beds was broken. If you sat on the edge one corner would life up.
2. No towels in the bathroom so we had to request those later on. And then when drying off the next morning after showering; we noticed the towels smelled like curry. Lovely.
3. The ceiling light/fan had exposed wiring and the light bulb was not secure.
4. The shampoo bottle on the counter in the bathroom had been used before.
The only plus was that that heater warmed the place up pretty well and fairly quickly.

We were tempted to check out of the motel that night and grab a room (plenty of hotels closer to the casino had vacancies) at the Fantasy Inn where we've stayed before and love and would have only cost us another $20-30 to stay there instead of the Matterhorn. But we just had a few drinks and stayed out late and dealt with it.
And its true the parking lot is difficult. It's in and out one way and the spots are angled on both sides.

Stayed at this motel over the weekend because it was so cheap. It's definitely not an amazing motel, but it obviously gets the job done.. especially for the price. My only complaint was that the room was really warm at night, almost uncomfortable. We had the ceiling fan and desk fan on, but didn't want to keep the windows open while we were sleeping because it seemed like the screen would be easily popped out.

The kid at the front desk (the owner's son) was really helpful when we checked in. Gave us the big map, let us know where everything was.. directed us to our room and let us know he was there if we had any questions. No questions or complaints here, and it was nice that the wifi was free and actually pretty good. Be sure to call the motel to make your reservation.. we got the motel for $25 CHEAPER than was listed on travel/hotel websites.. good thing we called instead!

I'd say the only real con is that there isn't a breakfast available, but it's so small, I don't know where they would put anything out.

I feel like when you're going on vacation and you're in such a huge, beautiful place like Tahoe, you should only be using the hotel for sleeping! And the woman that owned the motel was very nice to us, with what little contact we had with her (only when checking out).

Howard A's comment is a little silly, his son's electric toothbrush is hardly like a stuffed animal with emotional value.. though I see his point, everyone should always do a room check before they leave.

Nice for a motel.  One of the older properties, but the family who owns it were very nice and accommodating.
Easy access to the hotel parking lot and drive to your room door.  Great access to all of the Tahoe attractions, grocery store and kmart about 3 blocks away.  Pool was nice, clean and warm for our stay at the end of July.
Wifi was a little jumpy, we were on the end room, so the signal got lost a few times.  Had a fridge and microwave in the room.

Great place, location and price!  If you're looking for something simple and clean with most amenities this is the spot. Owners are very sweet and friendly.

Why it's not 5 stars is the pool and jacuzzi are out of commission for now and street noise is pretty loud.

Will definitely stay here again!

I used to REALLY like this place. Its pretty nice for how cheap it is (2 full beds, kitchen, plenty of space for $55 a night!), and the family that runs it is great. Until you wake up in the middle of the night to a friend covered in bug bites, and a few days later find out you all got eaten alive.

Still not sure if its mosquitoes, spiders, or bed bugs. Whatever it is, not good. Worse is that in the morning when we told the woman at the front desk, she said, "no no, no bugs here." When my friend is standing there with her eye swollen shut and bumps all over her chest and arm, I'm not sure how you can say we're wrong. Then, in an attempt to be helpful, she provided an old indian remedy and held the room key in front of my friends swolen eyelid and waved it back and forth counting to seven and said, "okay, there you go." Yeah, not acceptable.

If you just want a place to sleep, maybe 3 stars (with headphones). Street traffic is so loud with the single pane windows. Found an empty beer bottle underneath the bed. That shows the level of attention to detail and cleanliness IMO. The couple who run the place were very nice when we arrived but after we had gone and left something in the room, they refused to take the time to send/mail it back to us. We had to contact a local fed ex store to pick it up, package and ship it. We had offered to pay the motel to do this but they kept putting us off.
We found this place on Priceline and seemed like a decent deal and decent 'stars'.
Will NOT be staying here again..good thing it was just for 1 night. Dumpy place.

Okay, so I am reviewing a motel & I rarely would stay at one unless absolutely necessary. In this case, the Matterhorn is walking distance to the house we are renovating. I was not sure what to expect upon arriving but the staff was more than welcoming. Its a family owned and operated business. The daughter helped me and she was so nice!! Our room was very clean which is mandatory for me. The room was pretty large with a small fridge, stove & microwave. They even had freshly ground coffee in the kitchen. Th bathroom was clean & had good water pressure & clean fresh towels. The queen-sized bed had a new looking bedspread & very clean sheets. There was even a little table with two chairs. The TV was pretty old but worked just fine. Jacuzzi & pool are drained at this time for renovations.
The location was great. We enjoyed the location very much as we normally stay at Stateline and the hubby wants to spend all his time giving our paychecks to the casinos! We will definitely be coming back as we continue working on our house.

The room was very clean, considering that it was a motel.   We went on July 4th and the prices for all the hotels were very steep.  For the Jacuzzi room, we were charged $170.  But, I'm reading that it can go as low as $40 during off season.

The place looks family owned and I loved the guy that worked there.  He was so nice and took a lot of time to answer all our questions, show us a map and tell us about the area.  The room also includes a mini fridge.  Free wifi!!  I'd say the only downside was that the star of the room, the jacuzzi of course, wasn't as clean as I'd like it to be.  But after scrubbing it down, we were happily situated for a few hours with a bottle of wine :)

Ps.  Check out steamers bar/grill, it's less than a block away and they have the BEST taco's EVER!

My staple Winter lodging for three years!  I've come to rely on the combination of friendly service and fair prices I get from the Matterhorn. They're a simple no frills place, but for a good price they're very nice and have all the basics covered!  For the price, they're a notch above the other entry level joints at the crossroads.

Excellent customer service. I've stayed here twice before and both times we arrived 12am or later. The first time we booked here, the room we booked ran out so we got upgraded to a bigger room, which was the only room left. It had so many beds, much more than we needed. It had a kitchen too which was surprising. It's not like a fancy hotel, but it's pretty good for the price and considering it is a motel. I would definitely stay here again.

The customer service here is excellent. When we arrived we were greeted by one of the very friendly owners. She let us choose our own room and even upgraded us to one with a kitchen for free. The room was clean, had fast wifi, and cable tv. The location was also great since there were plenty of good restaurants within walking distance.

The street noise was not a problem since the traffic dies down at night.

I would recommend staying here if you're looking for a cheap yet comfortable place to stay in Tahoe.

I don't think you can do much better with a place of this quality.  The service was beyond outstanding.  My girlfriend and I drove up here on a Friday morning to beat the traffic.  We arrived at the place shortly after 11am.  At the corporate hotels I've been at, they've always told me to come back after 3pm, but it turned out our room was ready for us, so they let us check in!  The woman was very sweet and treated us wonderfully.  Bed was comfortable, there was adequate space for our clothes and luggage, and the refrigerator proved very useful on a hot summer day for storing the extra drinks we carried.  No A/C, of course (again, thank goodness for the fridge!), but in South Tahoe that's an amenity only the luxury hotels have...high temperatures are rare in the area, even in summer.

The beds were comfortable, the room was clean.  Free wi-fi signal was excellent.  TV was small, but worked fine.  Unfortunately, the pools and jacuzzi were drained, but I think they are being renovated.  A pity, as a swim would have been quite nice.

There's only one reason I don't give this place five stars: the lack of a screen on the bathroom window.  Unfortunately the weather was hot enough when we went that we really had no choice but to open it.  We had a second-floor room that only looked out to a clearly abandoned storage area inaccessible from the ground (stairs had been removed), so I wasn't worried about privacy, but it did allow a few flying bugs to get in which proved a nuisance.  But other than that, it's a wonderful, reasonably priced place to stay when you just need sleep, internet, and  a place to hang out.

Great location!

While I must admit that the name of the hotel influenced our decision to stay there, we were actually very happy with the stay.

I called the lady, possibly the owner, on the phone and got a slightly cheaper rate than I would have by booking through booking.com .
She was very friendly when we arrived and check in at midnight was no issue.

Our room was pretty big even with an own kitchen and big fridge.

Everything was clean as we expected it. I found the beds comfortable and had no issues with noise or anything (I am a light sleeper).

The only thing that sucks about either South Lake Tahoe or the location is that all the bars are far away. So if you want to check out the local bar scenery after a day of hiking it's not the best location. The hotels in better locations are more expensive of course, so I would say this hotel in total is a great deal. You can still invest the money for a cab or just party without alcohol which is possible if you have the skill :-)

After reading reviews and talking to the owner (super nice lady) we booked this for 1 night before a big hike. We normally do this if we want a good night's sleep instead of camping.
Sadly, sleeping on the hard ground would have been more restful then this!

Pros: Super friendly service. Clean room. Decent amenities (fridge, flatscreen, mirco)

Cons: Old funky room that clearly needed updates. Super noisy. Traffic and partying people until midnight.

But worst of all was the BED. If you could call it that. It was seriously like sleeping on a boxspring with no padding. I can basically sleep on anything but wow this was bad! I would rather not have spent $80 and just got a campsite and slept on my thermarest which was more cozy then that bed!

But the room was clean and the people were nice so if you don't care about comfort, it would be fine!

Price is cheap and the family is supper friendly. You get what you payed for. I was kinda bummed that the pool was drained but it's ok it's summer and there is a drought. The room was clean but behind the blinds showed many dead flys. Just an over site. This seems to be a family run place and I am happy I supported a local and not a huge corporation. It's in a great location and close to everything.

A buddy of mine and I wanted to spend a couple of days hittin the fresh pow at sierra, and were on a budget. we looked online and this place seemed cheap and everyone said they couldn't find much wrong with it, so we decided to ive them a call. they said they usually charged for early check-in, but we are young and polite so they didnt mind when we showed up at 7 a.m. yes, the parking lot is small, but so is the motel, what do you expect? the room was clean and comfortable, water heater and the wall heater were bomb, and you get all your basic channels on the tv. its the perfect spot if you just need a place to crash and don't want to break your bank. there were some tweakers next to us but besides that it was cool haha

Stayed here for snowglobe. The first thing we all noticed was how cozy the rooms were. The second thing was how nice the owners were.

The rooms themselves were actually decently sized and the microwave and mini fridge in it was the perfect touch to everything one needs while traveling.

Overall a very pleasant stay
