Established in 2014.

The Mellow Mountain Hostel has been an idea since May of 2013. We are hostel-goers ourselves, with a good sense of adventure and excitement. The building was in our hands 6 months after the idea was thought up (Nov 2013), and now its been another 6 months (may, 2014) and we are shooting to open this june. Its been just about 1 year, and we are thrilled to open. We are building The Mellow Mountain to be your home away from home, we like to consider it a 20 bedroom house.

The Mellow Mountain Hostel is opening its doors to everyone. We love the Earth and its inhabitants, come have a good time.

What a great place to get to know the area and meet other friendly world travelers.  Fantastic view of the mountains and gondola.  Close to everything.  Comfy and clean.  Charming.  Easy peasy check in and out, crisp linens and convenient under the bed additional personal storage.

Well I hate to be this place's first non-five star review, but here goes...

The good: Wolfie and Elias are cool.  I stayed at the hostel for two nights with my sister and three month old baby during the week in shoulder season.  I called ahead and the hostel wasn't busy so Elias was kind enough to put a dorm aside for us so the baby wouldn't disturb the other guests (and vice versa).  Check-in was easy, and the guys even carried our gear upstairs for us - beyond expected service.  The room was clean, and a bathroom for every four beds is definitely above standard.   Each bed has its own nightlight and fan, although it took some scrabbling around under the bed to figure out the extension cord situation.  Rooms have heaters but no A/C.  We cooked several meals in the kitchen, and facilities were adequate for us.   There's ample parking, and the location close to downtown is very convenient.  The price is great, especially given that other SLT options are typically overpriced for what you get.

The not-so-good: I spent a year traveling across the U.S. staying in hostels all the way, and have stayed in them around Europe since then.  I have never seen drug use so openly tolerated in any hostel, ever, anywhere.  I actually didn't interact with any guest at the hostel the whole time I was there without either seeing them light up or having them talk about it.  Two guests were courteous enough to put their bongs away or take them outside when we brought the baby into the common area, but while the hostel's website says the owners "welcome all travelers" there is a large contingent of travelers who simply will not feel comfortable here.

The kitchen was very dirty when we stayed.  The two sinks were full of dirty pots, pans, and plates, and the countertops hadn't been cleaned in a while.  The kitchen contains one residential-sized fridge (actually the same model as I have at home) and one residential-sized four-burner stove.  This was fine for weekdays in the shoulder season but if they eventually fill all 20 rooms with four guests each, the kitchen facilities are going to be completely inadequate.

The beds are not comfortable at all; the mattresses are very thick and covered in industrial-grade plastic, and they're very hard.  Stealing the blanket off the beds we weren't sleeping in and using it to cover the mattress went a long way to solving this problem.

I had hoped to talk through these issues with Wolfie and Elias the morning we left but the office wasn't open yet at 9:30am when we left.  Hopefully they'll get a chance to respond to this review.

My go to lodging in Tahoe.  If you're under 30, this is bar none the best place in SLT to stay while on a budget.  Super dope crowd and a really friendly and mellow staff that lives up to its name.  There's a party area which feels like college all over again when you want to have a god time, but people keep it quite when they get back to the room and in the hallways.  Rooms are always clean, though you have to make your own bed with the clean sheets they give you (at this price, who'd complain?).  For under $40 a night, this deal is hard to beat.

Staying here was better than staying in a hotel by far! The owners, Wolfie and Elias, are amazingly nice, accommodating, and down to earth. I thought I would be sharing a room with 20+ people, but luckily, the rooms have just two bunk beds. We shared the hostel with the coolest people from all over the world, and the communal room let's you all hang out together. Everything was clean and every detail taken care of. For two young owners, they have their stuff together! I can't imagine staying anywhere else next time I'm in Lake Tahoe!!!

This place was great! The guys that run it are super sweet and accommodating. They're building the place up right now - it's looking great already. Everything was clean. Each room has it's own bathroom with a shower, which is a plus. The people we met who stayed here as well were awesome. The prices are reasonable. Definitely the place to stay around here!!

This place is a MUST, for any traveler looking for a great spot to sleep, meet people and explore an awesome area- for a low rate.
Wolfie and Elias are super!  These guys know the area and are very helpful in recommending places to check out, they are welcoming & make you feel like family =-)
The building itself is a hotel that has been renovated into a hostel- that, is the layout & the feel ...except with a hostel vibe.
The common room has an awesome, well-equipped kitchen and it's the hang-out for everyone.... I met so many nice people that were traveling through. Lots of hikers, rock climbers and mountain bikers.
The beds are cozy, all linens and towels are provided, really nice showers and bathrooms. They also have night-lights clipped by each bed, free ear plugs, free wifi and coin-op laundry.
The location is perfect for the beautiful Lake Tahoe, and is also very close to restaurants, bars, grocery stores, coffee shops..etc....
I can't wait to come back! Thanks guys!!! BEST WISHES!!!

I've stayed at hostels all up the West coast, down the Midwest , and in the south and I have to say this is one of the best ones I've been to. they have a huge community room with plenty of space in the kitchen. Laundry room set up is nice as well. There's a projector hung on the ceiling for viewing purposes, and a foos ball table. Clean place, friendly staff, and affordable beds. Definitely recommended.

true backpacker s**t

Located in the city center of south lake tahoe the hostel is a hidden secret. Inconspicuous from the outside one will never expect a real place to be for backpackers. May be its the welcome beer what convinced me to write this review. Wolfie und Elias, the two owners and managers, did a really great job to turn a abandon motel into a warm, peaceful and relaxed place. The most impressing thing about the rooms was not the cleanliness, the heavy wooden beds or the roominess, it was the bathroom! Yes, there is a bathroom for every singe dorm!

The Mellow Mountain Hostel is an awesome time for all ages and people. By far the best experience I have had in any hostel environment. The owners, Elias and Wolfy, will take care of you and ensure a fun stay. The location is perfect - close to both the main drag of South Lake Tahoe and a short walk to some of the best lake access in all of Tahoe. I was super impressed with the bunk-beds that have been made from recycled wood, and the rooms are clean and well maintained. It's a great place to be for a one night stay along PCT, or for a weekend getaway from the Bay. There was people of all ages feeling right at home during our stay, and I think the culture of inclusion that Elias and Wolfy bring will make this the true gem of South Lake Tahoe.

The community of people you will meet at Mellow Mountain will be one that you will not soon forget. These guys are as funny, as genuine and as generous as they come. I always leave smiling and laughing about the silly jokes and memories. They are true mensches in all senses of the word.

Sure, this review is glowing and perhaps effusive, but that is not my typical manner or style. The words are 100% accurate when it comes to Mellow Mountain and these guys.

Yessssss this is the place to be!

Had a wonderful time in Tahoe here, the hosts Wolfie and Elias are amazing and the whole atmosphere is laid back and just perfect.

There is a common room with a foozeball and pingpong table, kitchen with everything available (even a coffee bean grinder... YES!) beamer for movies, and lots of cool people who will most probably have become your friends when it's time to leave.

The room is great, slept like a baby every night.

I'm definitely planning on returning to Tahoe and when I do I'm staying at Mellow Mountain Hostel again for sure. Can't wait to go back!

This was an awesome hostel experience!!!! Super clean, flexible, and friendly. The guys gave us suggestions for breakfast (great mexican cafe) even when we clearly woke them up very early. my friends and I hiked the day that's we checked out and since the hostel wasn't super busy they let us come back and shower at 6pm at no extra charge!

Then, I forgot my glasses in the hostel and didn't realize for month and a half. When I called and left a message, they called back right away. They had the glasses and were willing to ship them out the same day. I have never had such great customer service, even at 5 star hotels. Therefore, I completely recommend the mellow mountain!!!!!!!

Round two:

I just made a weekend trip to South Lake Tahoe and the Mellow Mountain Hostel with approximately 20 of my friends.  As always, Wolfie and Elias were incredibly accommodating - greeting us with smiles and hugs.  The hostel looks better than ever and is probably the most exciting and friendly place to stay in the area.  We will be back again and again!

I've stayed at many hostels all over the world and Mellow Mountain Hostel is definitely one of the best I've experienced. From the moment I arrived I felt included and welcomed. The place has a special atmosphere and a lot of fun going on. The hostel has a huge common room where you can hang out, cook and meet new people! It's the perfect spot to get to know other travelers and have a good time!
The owners are always happy and available for questions and both were very helpful when I needed to reorganize my travels.
I met so many interesting and cool people here, including Elias and Wolfie. They've really made this place into something unique and I feel lucky to have stayed there.

Great owners! Friendly and very accommodating. Awesome view and location, as good as it gets! Walking distance to the beach, mountains, all major casinos, shopping, eating, etc. Only 4 (brand new) bunks a room, with private bath in each room and lockers for every bed. Big rec room with full kitchen, games, stereo, movie screen, and balcony for enjoying the view. Very secure and parking on site. Ongoing renovations promise that it will be even better very soon! For being open 6 months though, exceptional service, quality and place to stay. Even cheaper to stay at than the local camp grounds! Can't recommend highly enough!

My boyfriend and I love this place!! It's a super convenient location, the staff is really friendly, and it's really easy to make friends here. There are some amazing art touches around the place. The rooms are clean and each bed has a fan, light, and outlets. There are also large lock boxes built into the beds so you can leave your stuff safely!  We loved hanging with everyone at night. They also have free beach passes and boogie night passes as well as a rideshare board, excursions and overall awesomeness.  There's plenty to do! I definitely recommend staying here !

I have to say that I had my doubts in the beginning.  Once I got there, however, I was greeted by very friendly staff, was given extraordinary deals for the ski lifts, and even got a free drink.  The room was college dorm style, but the bathroom was inside of the room which was a plus in a hostel setting. The price is definitely right.  If you're looking for a college style type of place to stay, this is it!  This place brought back a lot of fun memories and the people there were very down to earth.  Major props to Wolfie and Elias for putting this place together!

They had a weird ad on Craigslist about possible monthly rates but to "not just show up here." I was in Massachusetts so I mailed and got ignored. Guess they did just want me to show up there. Internet didn't often work. View from the deck definite highlight. Major mall cop vibe from Wolfie I'm guessing it was.

First of all, you're coming to stay at this hostel, you will love it. The location is perfect with an easy walk to a private beach they give you access to for being a guest, to the casinos and to the main drag and grocery store. The owners are extremely chill and blend in with the guests. In my two day stay the others guests were all awesome, from PCT hikers, travelers and friends and an international traveling clown that blew balloons into swords and added fuel to a music circle that transformed the night. We weren't the only ones who's one night stay turned into multiple nights. Very communal, very awesome, keep it mellow!

Four years ago I was looking for a hostel anywhere around Tahoe, couldn't find one.  Now Wolfie and Elias have Mellow Mountain goin' on and it's basically as good as at gets. Clean sheets, clean room, hot water, beer available at the front desk, kitchen to do some cooking or lounging. Ping pong on-site. Casinos next door.

Go here and tell your moms you went because she'll be proud you found such a great place to stay for as little as you paid.

These guys are doing things right. The first thing you'll notice is how awesome and friendly the staff is. The rooms are legit-- each bed has a mini fan, outlets and a reading light. The shared rooms have lock boxes built under the beds, so you can feel secure about your stuff. The WiFi is super fast (I'm a web designer, so this is crucial for me) and the community room is a nice place to eat, relax, play foosball or post up on your laptop. Laundry is provided on-site ($1.50/$1) and earplugs are available if you happen to want them. It's obvious that these guys have considered all the details, which is awesome, especially for the price! Cool art throughout the parking garage and an all-round 'mellow mountain' atmosphere. The location is great, too. Walking distance to everything.

If you're on a budget and want a nice place to sleep, then definitely check this place out. You'll more than likely make some new friends while you're there. We did.

I will definitely be returning.

We found a sign on trail advertising a new hostel in town,  and almost immediately ran into other PCT thru-hikers who had stayed at Mellow Mountain and highly recommended it.

The newly renovated rooms are clean with sturdy bunk beds and a bathroom in each! The community room with marble counter-topped kitchen and new appliances is the place to hang and share meals (or steal bites!). Free WiFi available in all rooms.

We had an awesome jam session of singing and laughing out front of 20-some guests, the owners included. I took an extra day off trail just to be in this relaxing community. It was a night to remember!

Super close to Heavenly Ski Resort and all their shops,  including Raley's grocery.

Bathroom towel, washcloth, bedding (fitted sheet, bed sheet,  and fleece blanket) included. Laundry available: $1.50 to wash,  $1.00 to dry,  brand new equipment.

Hiker box available to thru-hikers.

I can't recommend these guys enough, they really are easy to work with and they attract a chill crowd. Rates are $25 per night.

I had a very enjoyable stay at the MMH. Elias organized a shuttle that took a group of hostelers to a local German pub a few miles away. It was a great chance to meet some fellow travelers and enjoy some beer and music.

The rooms were clean, check in was a breeze, and the proximity to the state line area restaurants and casinos is ideal. Parking is plentiful and there is a community area with a full kitchen.

Great place to stay in SLT!!

Had an awesome Christmas weekend at this place. Arrived on Christmas Day and was amazed to find out Heavenly Village & the Harrahs casino are so close by & easy walking distance. Checking in with Wolfie & Elias was a breeze. They're indeed very accommodating & super friendly! The rooms, bunk beds, bed sheets, & towels are clean. It's spacious enough for 4 people. It also has lockers underneath and they provide locks for it. I like the lamps on each bed with small fans too. The kitchen is well equipped & updated. Other vacationists are friendly also but I hope they are more considerate though with cleaning after their mess in the kitchen. It's forgivable since it's the holidays with a lot of partying going on. I got a free stamp for my postcard & free beer for me & my friends for voluntarily washing the dishes :)) My OCDC instinct kicked in first thing in the morning. But our last day after 3-day stay, the kitchen was clean in the morning. It has a very good view of Heavenly Village. For its prime location at a very cheap rate, this place is way too awesome! Their dogs, Mila & Solstice are so cute! Will definitely go back... summer or spring for hikes around the area. We did hike a bit at Van Sickle Bi-State Park just farther down Heavenly Village where we can see the gondolas above us.

For on the go travelers & vacationists who are on strict budget like me, I highly recommend this place. Keep it up Wolfie & Elias!

I had my stay at mellow mountain this holiday season! Let me say that Wolfie and Elias are some of the greatest people I have ever had the joy of meeting. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The common room has ample cooking utensils to cook any meal you could want. The amazing map with pins from everyone around the world is so interesting to see. Both Elias and Wolfie go above and beyond and will help in anyway you can and are almost always available.

All in all I highly recommend the mellow mountain hostel and think it's the only place I'll ever stay at when visiting the beautiful south Lake Tahoe!

Mellow Mountain Hostel is FUN. My first time here was during the summer when I planned a hella impromptu trip to Tahoe and didn't have time to find cheap lodging. My second time here was during the winter- I had a good enough time here the first time that I really didn't mind a return trip.

Wolfie and Elias are the owners of this hostel and are incredibly welcoming. They gave me a grand tour the first time (there's a kitchen/rec room in addition to all the hostel rooms) and offered me free beer the second time. Each room has one bathroom and two bunk beds (four beds in total) with towels and sheets provided. Being a hostel, you will meet some interesting folk. On my first stay, my one of my roommates was Australian guy who was just surf bumming around America and wanted to give Lake Tahoe a shot. He took me and my friend out to an Aerosmith concert where we stood in the parking lot for a free listen (couldn't see) and proceeded to hit up the casinos for free alcohol. That definitely made for some fond memories.

Each bed has its own fan and light so you'll be pretty comfy on your bed. Unless you get top bunk which I've found to be too close to the ceiling and the ladder up to it is a bit hard to navigate. Hungover me did not have a good time making my way down. If you get to your room and find yourself with dibs, choose the bottom bunks!

For $26/night, Mellow Mountain Hostel is a steal. It's an affordable livable abode and basically across the street from the Heavenly gondola.
