The Trailhead - A Lake Tahoe Lodge in South Lake Tahoe, CA

History

Established in 2014.

As Tahoe has phenomenal winter recreation and is the pro-am hub for skiers and snowboarders, the area attracts many visitors from around the world. In the winter of 2014 two such young entrepenuers decided that South Shore needed an affordable, smokefree alternative the the casinos and timeshares that was centrally located and honored the area. Thus The Trailhead was borne!
Close to the ski lifts and downtown Stateline nightlife, this hotel is full of advice and decor on all things outdoors: Skiing, Hiking, Biking, Boating.
We love providing accommodations and being the starting point (or trailhead) for anyone's adventure through the Jewel of the Sierra.

We stayed at their luxury room for the  first time and liked it. Jacuzzi was awesome and the room was clean and pretty descent.

Got a last minute deal as well when we called in. The location is good as well- walking distance to casinos and Gondola.

Will stay in the same room again..:)

2 words: STAY AWAY!
I hope the owners of this place reads this. First off, we booked our room on Orbitz.com where they had all the rooms listed for 76.00 All of them, king size bed, queen size bed...whatever it was- 76.00 In the amenities, it listed hot tub, fireplace, etc. We get there, and of course our room has no hot tub. It was one of the things I was looking forward to enjoying during my trip to Tahoe, but I was told that we had to pay extra for a room with a hot tub. So Fuck them. What a way to start off my trip. So our room, it was ok. The bathroom is uber small...so basically if youre not looking to spend a lot, it's an alright place to stay...the office does smell like shit, and the guy who was there, the same guy who told us we had to pay more...I didnt like him much. OH and the internet, my boyfriend couldnt sign onto the wireless even after calling the front desk and getting the password. So not sure if you should look forward to using your laptop there either. I asked my boyfriend what he thought of the place and if he would stay there again. His response? "No."

The rooms here are overpriced, but you can haggle with the owner (who is usually the gentleman at the front desk) over the price.

They actually have a few rooms here with in-room jacuzzi tubs. The jacuzzis are nice, but the rooms feel just a little off kilter. It definitely feels like someone was trying to fill out the decor for the sake of filling space.

I took my girlfriend-at-the-time to this place the first time she had been to Tahoe. We only stayed here because most other places were already booked.

We enjoyed the jacuzzi, but definitely overpaid. If you're spending this much money on a room, consider the hotels at the casinos instead. It's about the same price, and feels alot more luxurious.

We normally stay at Mont Bleu but they've recently changed their dog policy so we went with something nearby that we'd be able to bring the dog. Being a less expensive hotel, it was exactly what we were expecting. The room had a decently comfortable bed, soap and shampoo in the bathroom, they even had a fridge and microwave.

There were some annoyance with our stay. First of all, when we checked in, we were told of and paid the dog fee. We were expecting it and that wasn't the issue. The day after our check-in, I took the dog out in the morning. As soon as we returned to the room, the front desk called my husband and brusquely informed him of the dog fee. Upon being told we were aware of and had paid the fee, he grunted and disconnected. The following day we had a similar conversation. Not a huge deal, just made us question the communication skills amongst the staff.

Secondly, the plumbing was off. The toilet clogged easily (the only non-liquid that was being flushed was toilet paper). The shower was also not hot enough for me although the other half said it was fine. The water pressure in the shower was decent.

So...5 stars because it was exactly what we expected.
-1 star for the lack of communication/annoying dog converstaion
-1 star for the plumbing

We had no problem with the cleanliness except that the sink was clogged! The management and employees are all indian, and they seem a little too greedy when it comes to investing in their business. The breakfast was a water-down coffee with hostess donuts(99 cents)! The one whos cleaning the rooms looked like she was the managers mother. They want to charge big and spend little on their customers.

It is walking distance to casinos and stuff. But would recommend other hotels that are towards the lake and away from the main street because of the noise.

Pricey for what they offer.

I went to Tahoe during the summer 09 and I stayed here. For the price, I thought this place was pretty decent.

Pros:
The service was very helpful during my stay. Upon entering y room, it smelled of cigarette smoke. I told the front desk and was promptly given a new room and an apology (finally a place that apologizes for their mistakes).

My room was clean. No mysterious stains etc.

The hotel is pet friendly. I took my 70 pound German Shepard and they didn't have a problem with it. There is also a grassy area where they can do their business.

The pool is clean and heated.

Cons:
There were none considering the price that I paid (around $50 a night If I remember correctly).

Conclusion:
For the price, it was a decent hotel.

The room was clean and spacious, as well as AFFORDABLE and PET FRIENDLY. The location is key. The hotel is located only 1 block from shopping, restaurants, Ice Skating Rink, Movie Theatre and The Heavenly Resort and 2 blocks from Stateline and Casinos.

I gave this Hotel 5 stars for Customer Service. I booked my reservation for the Vagabond Inn using an online booking service.
In my past experiences booking reservations online, if I was unable to make my reservation I still got charged for the room or at the very least lost my deposit. When I was unable to make my reservation I called the Vagabond Inn and spoke with a very nice woman working at the front desk. She was understanding of my hold up and didn't charge me for the night I didn't make it. I was only charged for the nights I actually occupied the room. I really appreciated the sincerity of her friendliness.

I would definitely stay here again and recommend it. Next time, I will probably spring for the room with the hot tub and fireplace.

Best thing about this place was the price- cheap and you can haggle with the owners for a better price. The location was also prime, its probably the closest motel to the gondola and shopping area. Loved the in room jacuzzi, fridge, microwave, bed was super comfy and clean- no bed bugs. Good brand shampoos/soaps, although they didn't give us extras after we used the first set, and we were there for 3 days. Also the shower was tiny, dark, and had a horrible nozzle, so we didn't use it at all, and just bathed in the jacuzzi. One complaint was the joke of a continental breakfast- all they had were tiny cups of weak watery coffee with powdered creamer, and the tiniest muffins i had ever seen. I guess I would stay here again, if the next time i go to Tahoe I'm still unemployed and broke. But I hope I will be able to afford a more luxurious hotel.

This is a budget hotel, and it feels like a budget hotel.  My room was reasonably clean, and all the furniture and other items inside the room were in good condition.

Someone with luxurious taste or high expectations of their hotel should not stay here.  But if you're looking for a clean bed and a shower, this place should get you by.

I never have high expectations for motels in South Lake Tahoe for New Year's Eve. It was really just a place to sleep for the night. Having family that have owned/managed motels and inns in Lake Tahoe, I knew that I was going to pay a lot to stay for the night ($240). However, I have stayed in cheaper motels with better service. Check-in time was supposed to be 1:00PM. We got there a little after 1 and they said that our room wouldn't be ready until at least 2 (with attitude given, as well). When we were finally checked in, the entire room still looked dirty and there was dust everywhere. Everything was unplugged including the cable to the TV. We were able to pull the cable to the TV in order to watch it for a few minutes until the cord dropped again. The shower had hair in it when I stepped in. We finally left for the night and got back a little after 1AM. We turned on the heater only to find out that it was blowing cold air. Because it was so late and we were leaving in the morning, we didn't want to deal with a maintenance person or call the front desk. We spoke with the front desk in the morning to see if there was anything they could do for us since there were some issues; they didn't offer anything. Needless to say--even if it means spending $100 or more a night--we won't be staying at the Vagabond for New Years (or any other day) again.

BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS! BED BUGS!

There are budget motels and then there are places like this. Stains EVERYWHERE, on the ceiling even! The TV was tiny, the bathroom was tiny, the shower head was one of those "spray you everywhere with little high-pressure daggers while not really doing anything" models.

Did I mention the bed bugs? Yes? We'll it's worth repeating: THERE WERE VERY VERY HUNGRY BED BUGS! When we told the brain donor at the front desk about the bed bugs, she basically shrugged. I guess it's not the first time she's heard that complaint. Don't walk away from this place, RUN!!!

You get what you pay for.  Fortunately, my friend and I paid $57.45 for two beds, which is exactly what this dump is worth.  The decor is gross and the room is simply dirty.  We discovered a bag of jalapenos behind the bathroom door.  I'm not sure how the janitorial crew missed that.  Moreover, we found a used water bottle under the bed.  In the shower stall, there was mold throughout the ceiling and walls.  Meanwhile, we did not have a remote control for the dated television with only 24 channels.  My friend asked the front desk for a new remote control but to no avail.  To make matters worse, their credit card reader did not work at the time of check-out, so we had to run to an ATM to pay with cash.  Despite the low cost, this place is not worth it.  Just spend the money elsewhere for an upgraded Tahoe experience.

overpriced &  nASSty.  These folks would rather be lazy as hell and add a keycard feature to their doors (probably so they don't have to physically walk to any of the doors to lock/unlock them) than clean/burn the absolutely disgusting carpets they have. The walls are so thin they are almost transparent.  Let me not even get into the pools that look like they came from a slum in Baltimore. Go somewhere else! No no no.. RUN somewhere else!!!

We stayed there during the Memorial Day weekend. Got a bargain for $100 (tax included) for the 2 nights.

Pros
The room was quite clean; so were the towels and bed linen. Television, microwave & Fridge in the room was all in working condition. Room cleaning service was also provided for.I believe it is a family run business; staff was quite helpful & courteous. So overall I was very happy with the kind of money we paid for.

Cons
Breakfast was included; but they have only muffins & juice & coffee was there which hardly makes up of a breakfast. However, they were transparent & had told me that breakfast would be so much when I had talked to me on phone before reaching there.

Verdict
At the same price, I would definitely be going back there if ever I revisit Lake Tahoe

Shame on the Health Department for not shutting this place down - Seriously!

We stayed at this dump over MLK weekend.  When we checked in it was late at night, and we were exhausted.    The room didn't just "smell" like smoke.  The room felt like we were living in an ash tray.  It was the most disgusting place I have every stayed.  I woke up several time in the night, because I couldn't breath, and my eyes were burning and bright red.
The next morning we called the front desk and asked to be moved.  They said there was no room.  When I pointed out that the vacancy sign was lit up, they said that it was for a "more smellier room" then the one we were in.  The woman at the front desk told me that if I wanted, she would give me some bleach and I could clean the room myself.  When I continued to complain, they told me the owner would call me.  When she called me she said that they would move us to a new room.  When we got there it seemed better even though the floor was wet.  We thought the floor/carpet was wet because they had cleaned it (in retrospect that was a pretty foolish assumption, based on the overall cleanliness of the place)  At least we could breath, so we decided to switch.  For the next two nights, the floor remained wet, the toilet got clogged (took them a long time to find a plunger) and I woke up with massive bug bites all over my arms.  I wouldn't stay at this place again even if somebody paid me.  It really was that bad.  I think my three nights there actually took a year off my life. Next time if we can't find a place, I would rather sleep in the car.

p.s. Normally I'm all about "Pet Friendly."  However, the fact that this place is Pet Friendly really scares me.  They simply don't have the hygiene habits to run a Pet Friendly Hotel.

Worst hotel I think I've ever stayed in. Holes in the sheets, mattress sits on ply board, cigarette butts on the ground in our non-smoking room, no fitted sheet on the mattress, dark and dingy. Ironing board was broken and there is NO FREE SHUTTLE as advertised. Very disappointed. Spend an extra 10 bucks and go next door.

The only thing I was happy with was the bed, very comfortable. I have to say the sheets and pillow cases looked very clean. The bed cover and blanket seem dirty, old and had holes. The towels looked very old. The table and night stand were dirty, you could see hand prints and glass rings on them. The carpet seemed in average condition, however it had burned wholes on it. The continental breakfast was good. Not sure I will ever stay here.

I am reading some of the other reviews and I'm just baffled. If I wasn't traveling with people that had already stayed at The Vagabond I probably wouldn't have based on the reviews and that would have been a shame.

First off if you do not like bargain motels don't stay here. There are better, and more expensive, places just up the street.

Someone mentioned bed bugs in one of these other reviews, we took three different rooms and none of had any issues with any kind of insects. I examined my mattress on arrival, it was clean and very comfortable.

In fact, this place is way above average for the location and price. The rooms are reasonably clean and well appointed, the staff is friendly and accommodating, it's a short walk from everything; I hope to stay here again.

Disclaimer: The review below was for the Vagabond. I have not stayed here since it changed to the Trailhead, however I do think their current prices are a little to high. $160/ night? No thank you. I can stay at a nicer looking place for that price.

Have stayed here on multiple occasions and never been disappointed. This is a bargain hotel people, not a luxury resort, you will get what you pay for and the price is right here! Seems like they are slowly making improvements also, the pool looks much nicer than before. Will stay here again.

What a mistake booking this motel.  Dirty dirty dirty. When checking in, I was told they still had to make the bed cause the lady who stayed there last night "really made a mess of things".  I should have run screaming right then.  Dirty walls, run down everything.  Sad sad place.

It was my husband who made the decision to stay here. By the looks of the outside I was disappointed in his selection. Remember the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" we'll that definitely applies here. Entering the room I was quickly surprised with the room. It was nice in size, with a working fridge & microwave!
The room was very clean, with a pleasant smell. (Carpet & blankets were clean! No complaints) Surprisingly the bed was comfortable! However my only complaint would be the bathroom experience. The bathroom is in serious need of a face lift. The toilet seat needs to be replaced asap, the shower head needs to be remounted to the wall, and they need to call their local Rescue Rooter because the shower took forever to drain. Hopefully it's just that one specific bathroom with the issue. Overall, we would stay here again if in the area.

Stayed two nights at the new Trailhead. Wow, it might as well be a completely different hotel than the Vagabond Inn.

The rooms are cozy and super clean. Very creative light fixtures, headboards, towel holders, etc. A/C was super cold and brand new. Mini-fridge. Free coffee.

Best value in town. Close to everything.
Will definitely stay there again.

ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE OF A HOTEL! !

I made my way into South Lake Tahoe looking for a little motel that would do a weekly rate under $200 + had good internet + had a refrigerator + had a spa + a tv ... I visited multiple motels along Tahoe BLVD and this one along with a few others had all of it. This one offered the best price so I decided to purchase my week of stay here.

NOW .. as a new age business man I conduct most of my work through the use of the internet. So the first thing I check as soon as I get into the room is the internet connection since that is the most important thing to me. Within a minute of being online I notice that the internet connection is FAR away from "HIGH SPEED INTERNET" as advertised on the green sign outside. Try taking 5 minutes just to load a god damn page ...yes ...it is one of those kind of connections. I say ...okay ..maybe it's just a busy time of the night where everyone is soaking up all of the bandwith....than after about an hour of being in the room the internet connection starts to constantly disconnect me and reconnect me to the point where I can't even get past loading a SINGLE PAGE ONLINE. After 2 days of the internet being like this I ask to be moved to a different room hoping to get a better connection.

We get moved to a different room where we have to pay an extra $30 a week to stay in there because it's "nicer." Let me tell you how nice this room was. Our fucking TV gets about 4 fucking channels and when you walk by it for whatever reason it goes all fuzzy. Whatever ..it's just a TV RIGHT? Okay ... so how about our refrigerator .... OHHH GUESS WHAT ...THAT SHIT DOESN'T WORK either! Alright ..fuck the refrigerator ..who needs one anyways, right? Let's go in the HOT TUB outside since we just had a long day of driving around and running errands. GUESS WHAT ... the hot tub doesn't even turn on!...Guess that idea is a flop.

So guess what I have to do the entire time while I am staying at this fucking rats asshole of a hotel ... I have to walk (sometimes drive) over to the Hacienda hotel about 2 minutes away with my laptop in my hands in the blistering cold blizzard just to get a god damn internet connection so I can handle my business. I had to do this for the entire time I stayed at this hotel.

I called the front desk many times and the girl up front said she would fix the internet after the second day I was there and it never got fixed. In fact, it seemed that the internet got progressively worse as the days went on. The sad truth of the matter is this hotel would have been nice to stay at if they would have actually lifted a finger to make sure everything fucking worked as advertised on the sign.

Let me tell you how god damn easy it is to fix all of these problems. Internet = Get a brand new router with a higher output frequency. Refrigerator = check each fucking room to make sure the most basic of necessities like a refrigerator works ..if it doesn't ...buy a new one!!!! TV = get a new cable box + connectors so all of the channels come and doesn't turn off mysteriously as you walk by it. Hot tub = pay someone to come fix that shit or don't advertise you have one in the first place.

My problem with this place is the fact that all of the problems could easily be fixed with a minuscule amount of effort. Anyone who runs a business like this is sure to lose they're customers in the long run and eventually they're business.  If you are cool with not having any of the basic necessities other than a shower and a roof over your head than come right in to the Vagabond Inn.

OHHHH I FORGOT TO MENTION .... the HEATER IN THE ROOM DIDN'T WORK EITHER. Look at the date of the yelp review ... it's WINTER TIME .. it just snowed 2 feet and it's been about 5 degrees outside every night. Talk about freezing your nuts off ... thank god I was smart enough to bring a portable heater before coming up here...that shit was literally my savior.

If you are looking to stay in a good hotel for a good price I would recommend going to the Hacienda a few buildings down from the Trashabond Inn. Hacienda has a crispy hot tub ..  a lightning fast internet connection .. working tv ...working heater .... and everything else that this trashcan of a hotel doesn't have.

I don't usually come onto yelp and flame businesses like this unless they TRULY DESERVE IT. I can understand having a few mess ups here and there, but the amount of shit that doesn't work at this hotel is unacceptable and this hotel doesn't deserve to be in business if they are advertising that they have all of these nice things that are necessary for a comfortable stay when they really don't.

Fix your shit up and make sure to tend to your costumers needs when they request something that you are advertising you have. Don't leave them hanging the entire time. This has been by far the most UNCOMFORTABLE stay in any hotel I have ever been too. Take my advice and go somewhere else. I wouldn't make my worst enemy stay here.

One of only places available that weekend. Receptionist and staff were very friendly. Great location. But once I walked in my room it all changed. The room was freezing. It took 1 hour for the heater to make the room comfortable. Shower stayed hot at least. Carpet looked and roomed smelled a little dirty.

Clean and comfortable. I ended up at the Trailhead when the cabin my friends rented became way too crowded; they had a ski closet for my gear and everything. "Continental Breakfast" was a little wimpy but the coffee was fresh. Hot tub was under repair.... :(
Awesome front desk staff cut us a deal even though we didn't have a reservation.

Loved it!
Furniture and atmosphere were classic Tahoe. Staff was accommodating, familiar with the day and night happenings and recommended a cool local concert.  Shower was a little dingy but water was hot so that's all that matters.
Whole place faces a parking lot so no lake view but the lake is walking distance. Casinos and downtown are a five minute walk away, so you're removed from them, but they're also accessible.

So yes it was a last min Valentine's weekend trip to Lake Tahoe that brought us to Trailhead Lodge. This was the last vacancy in Tahoe according to my hotel app.
Upon making the reservation on hotel tonight we knew the room would be basic. That was fine since we were there more for activity and it was last minute.
Then we got there....  The front desk woman possibly hotel manager mentioned another guest complaining about the sheets and her having to get another set. A little concerning but OK.
We go to our upstairs room and first thing we notice is the dingy carpet and stale scent. Good thing my babe brought a candle. Then the bathroom, dirty floor, shower floor, and later, come to find, a leaky sink. And the possible calcium buildup that had the sink water shooting out at an angle. But the most irritating thing  was the very loud creaking of the floors with EVERY step we took. Not just us but we heard our neighbors steps as well.
It was late night when we checked in and since we were only staying a night we didn't bother calling the manager. I don't know if this was an isolated incident but my dear and I agreed we wouldn't be back to find out.

My bf and I booked through expedia for our Tahoe trip for a weekend in Aug'14 for a friends wedding. We stayed 2 nights in a cozy Queen on the 2nd flr. Service was a 4* our entire time there and our room would be a 3* (not bad because this was a standard hotel). Everything seemed clean and we had the standard amount of towels, soap and toilet paper. AC/Heater worked fine. We had no life or death issues in the room we stayed in, despite having a flat sheet as the fitted (So we had 2 flat sheets on the bed). We laughed and just didn't care. We were there to have fun and it wasn't the end of the world. We didn't complain as it wasn't a big deal to us. We used the wifi and it worked pretty well. Sad to see the pool/hot tub were not working BUT we prefer to swim and hang out in fresh water. So we did a day at the Lake. We refused housekeeping services so we can not comment on that service. We couldn't tell if we had neighbors as it was quite quiet. Since we were from SJ we asked the front desk about the touristy stuff as well as what was the local faves.

All staff were very helpful during our stay. We had a decent view of the lake. A lot of things were within walking distance. Check in and out were smooth. Our deposit was refunded within the time allotted. The only thing we didn't like was the small shower stall (with no tub) and sink area but we weren't expecting "The Marriott," especially since we were paying less than their rates. Our friends that came booked at Motel 6, as it was across the way from the wedding venue and I would still pick this plc over that. Personally, if there was availability, I would have booked a cabin. I'm an outdoorsy woman, so these fancy hotels seem out of whack in a forest setting like Lake Tahoe.

None the less, if we were to return, we would come back to The Trailhead. You get what you pay for. So if you're looking for something NOT crappy, like Motel 6 down the way and you can't budget "The Marriott" or "Tahoe Beach Retreat," then I would suggest this plc.

Cheers.
