I booked Discovery Lodge on a last minute trip to Estes based on the price and images on the web site.

The site is split into 4 or 5 buildings depending on the type of room.  We were in an 'oversized' room that slept 4 on beds and could have held another 6 on the floor and an 11th on the couch. I don't think Discovery Lodge would like that, but it was a big space.

Our room did not have A/C (and the web site prepared us for this), but did have baseboard heaters which looked like they were in pretty bad shape. However, the evening temps were set to be in the mid 40s, so an open window would keep things comfortable in the evenings. Our room only had one vent to the outside - some louvered slats in the door. This led to our first problem with Discovery Lodge. After we had gotten our family into bed, someone down the way began to smoke outside their room. While Disc. Lodge prohibits smoking IN the rooms, the ashtrays outside the rooms actually make it worse for those in OTHER rooms. This smoker's smoke wafted quickly into our room which made life uncomfortable.

We did not have a way to seal off our door other than to hang a towel over the slats which mitigated the problem a bit, but of course, made our room stuffy. I got up after 1:00a to remove the towel and cool the room. This problem could be zero for some guests if they just happen to run into a non-smoking population during their stay, or it could have been 100x worse if we'd had more than one smoker nearby.

The bathroom was dingy; the fan grate was about 70% clogged with dust and dirt and much of the shower grout was either yellow or black.

The outlets in the room were mostly two-prong older-style which could be a problem for those bringing laptops on site for work.

For a short stay, Discovery lodge is really a great value; however, I wouldn't want to stay more than a couple of days. This place seems to be on a serious downhill slide. The pool (which wasn't advertised, so no deception here) was empty and cracked. Discovery lodge was probably fantastic back in the day, but hasn't had any real TLC since then. If they do even minor renovation, Discovery Lodge could be great. As it was during our stay, it's a short stop for a low price and nothing more.

I am sad to have to write this review but I feel anyone going this direction should know about my experience. STORY: Our extended family choose to have the 2012 family reunion in Estes Park, Colorado. We rented the "Otis" house through the discovery lodge which was over all very nice house about 1/2 mile from the discovery lodge it's self. The Discovery Lodge is a older multi building hotel. 6 small groups of our party had to book rooms in the Discovery Lodge Hotel. First their website is very deceiving and the rooms are not nearly as nice as what you see on the website. NOISE: Building 100 is right under the main lodge and you will know it is time to get up when people start walking around and you can hear the thumping. SMELL: My room smelled the minute I entered it of mildew. I work in construction and upon investigation I found that the shower tub is leaking water under the door jam resulting in this smell. I stepped on wet carpet from the water leak that's what helped me figure that one out AIR: Next problem was my window and my cousin's window that stayed next door was broken. When she called to have them fix it they said "just go outside and pull it from the outside to open". Not me. BUGS: First nap on the bed I woke up with three bites on my face from an unknown bug. Then while laying in bed at night with my lap top being the only light on I killed the bugs one by one as they landed on the screen. BED: Beautiful wood frame. Problem paper thin pillows and if you are not careful you will hit your head into the wood head board. I can't say I slept good. FRIG: They supply nice small frigs in your room. Mine froze all my stuff night one. Then I lowered it and it still froze it. SUMMARY: There is NO A/C, they provide fans which is fine I was warned. Parking was great parked right in front of my room. Nice pond. Right across from beautiful golf course and Safeway is walk-able distance. I highly recommend the Ottis house, but it isn't close. Office is only open from 8am to 11pm, so no after hours support. RESULTS: One family member scheduled to stay there took a look at room and left immediately. Two other family members cancelled reservations after hearing what the rest of group had to say. One family member stayed in building 600 and said. One family member left early because they just could get adapted in room with baby. I did go to management when I left with a letter about my concerns. The desk attendant basically yelled at me for 5 minutes about how I should have brought all this to their attention on day one. How they could have solved all these problems. There shouldn't have been problems in the beginning. I wasn't trying to get a free ride by expressing my concerns at all, but the manager only charged me for 2 nights instead of 3 he even called me personally which raised the stars from 1 to 2 in my book. Even tho I was scheduled to leave after night 5 I choose to leave early. I discovered a lot I didn't like about the discovery lodge.

Great value in Estes Park. Helpful and courteous staff. Convenient to shopping.  Wife sent me out twice, but with Safeway a couple blocks down, I could hardly complain. We stayed in the suite and found it more than accomodating. The second sink was especially appreciated when it came to getting ready the next morning. Nice fireplace, too. The only thing keeping me from giving Discovery lodge a five star rating is that the beds could be a bit softer.

Nice view of pond and two playgrounds to entertain the kid. This is a gem hidden in plain sight amongst the ho hum chain hotels. Best value in Estes for a generously sized two bedroom, three bed suite. We will definately stay with Discovery Lodge again.

Good place to stay at a very reasonable price for Estes Park. It's not a new place and shows its age but our room was large and very clean. We were on the lower floor of the western wing and the room felt a little dark. You might want to pay the extra $10 and get a balcony room if one is available.

The location is great. You really can easily walk to downtown Estes via a pretty riverwalk. It's also a quick jump over the main road to get to the grocery store and several restaurants and shops.

Everyone we dealt with at the hotel was very friendly and we would definitely stay again.

We have an active family with 2 girls that stay outside most of the time doing something.  Therefore, I was looking for a place that is clean and reasonable.  Discovery Lodge definitely met this requirement.  We stayed in mid August 2011 and got a room downstairs with some view of their pond.

Upon arrival, we were impressed by how clean the place was.  There was a small refrigerator to store food and drinks.  Water pressure was good and hot water was abundant.  Wireless internet connection was strong and I never ran into any difficulty.

We found the front desk and cleaning staff to be helpful and friendly.

Their location is quite centralized.  It is right next to the golf course by the Estes Park lake.  Estes Park visitor center is just two doors away and is within walking distance.  You can get all your detailed information and take the free shuttle to go to places from here.  If you are hungry, you simply walk across the street to Safeway to get picnic lunch material or dine in one of the restaurants.

We enjoyed our stay here and look forward to come back.

Went up for Easter weekend to get away.
The girl at check in was very friendly and thorough with all of the details.  I booked a room with a king, and found it to be very charming.  The views were wonderful, and I especially loved the little deck from the room to hang out.  Even better views from the hot tub. Overall, clean rooms and a fantastic bang for your buck! The only drawback was that the beds were a tad on the firm side, and the pillows were really thin--not the most comfortable for a side-sleeper.

Really pleased w Discovery Lodge!! Very affordable and great location -close to everything but not right on touristy strip. Has all the 50s charm with BBQ grill and picnic areas, playground, horseshoes, fishing pond, but rooms are updated where it counts while still looking vintage. This is my spot anytime I am in Estes park!!

Awesome place for a great price.  We booked it for mothers day night.  50 bucks on Priceline.  55 paid after taxes.  We had a ground floor room and were able to park directly in front of our private entrance.  The room has new beds and furniture just this year.  Very clean.  Hopefully will be coming back soon!

The Discovery Lodge is a safe bet for staying near Rocky Mountain National Park in Estes Park, CO. The grounds are nice, and rooms are spacious and clean. The staff are also friendly and seem pretty knowledgeable of the area. Rooms also come with a refrigerator, which is a big plus if you plan on packing drinks and snacks with you while hiking and exploring. Finally, it's within walking distance of a large shopping center with hardware, grocery, and other stores, plus a cinema and restaurants like Subway and KFC.

There are some drawbacks to staying here, however. The hotel is right off a main highway, so it can be a bit noisy if you plan to have the windows open and rest. Also, they have free WiFi but it was really hard to pick up a signal. Finally, the rooms could use a bit of updating.

This said, however, the Discovery Lodge is still a great value in town. I called around a lot for the long weekend and most hotels had a two or three night minimum stay; Discovery Lodge did not. You can get a two-queen upstairs room for about $86, including tax. Not bad! If I were in town, I would most likely stay here again, but there are definitely other options around.

I gave this place five stars based upon the $59/night I paid for a king room with a balcony, picture window and awesome view. Love Discovery Lodge! They have an awesome fishing pond that my son spent hours at. Many benches all the way around the pond to sit and relax, also have a gazebo right there and a couple charcoal grills. Sat on a bench and watched elk graze and even come over for a drink in the pond!
Next to the pond is a little playground and a horseshoe pit. Up near my room was a hot tub, which I enjoyed twice. Great wifi signal. Within walking distance to Safeway and downtown, but far enough away to feel vacation-y.

Next time I'm in Estes, I will probably be booking my stay here. The variety of rooms to choose from is awesome too, some have fireplaces, etc. Super happy with my stay here and can't wait to come back.

Full disclosure: This review is two years old. I am transferring my google reviews to yelp.

This was a great "not sure where we're going to sleep tonight" find. Beautiful views of the mountains, pet friendly, outdoor hot tub (we didn't use). Showers were excellent; clean tub, powerful water pressure, quality shower head. Room was clean and charming, although it was not tidied (ie, beds not made, etc) the second day we were there (maybe the cleaning crew accidentally skipped us? It was tidied every other day.) Mini fridge in our room, but no microwave; we had to use the main lobby microwave downstairs for our morning hot chocolate.

What made this place a winner though, was the exceptional customer service we received. The woman working the desk was so friendly and accomodating; it was a great way to launch our vacation! Also, the price was beyond reasonable! We were there in the off-season, so I'm not sure how much of a difference that makes.

I would highly recommend the Discovery Lodge to anyone looking for a great stay in Estes Park.

Based on the reviews of this place I thought my wife and I were in for an enjoyable stay. Boy was I wrong. This place is poorly maintained to a T. The screen door is mounted crooked and caught on the floor on our way in. In the main room the ice bucket was dirty (a greasy finger print smudge gross ) which matched the filthy remote ( there was a sheen of filth on it) . After wiping off the remote my wife found that the batteries were dead and had to go get new ones. I took this time to go the washroom. On my way there two portable heaters and a window fan caught my attention. All three of these looked like they had not been cleaned since being bought and were caked with dust and dirt. When I got to the washroom I could not close the door. I had to push incredibly hard to get it closed and when I did get it closed I could see that it was hung noticeably crooked as well. The inside of the bathroom was not any better than the door. Chipped linoleum on the bathroom tub, poorly laid sealant and most of the pipes going to the sink were missing the covers so there were just dry wall gouges with no sealing around the pipes. Oh and the toilet was one of those terrible low flush ones... enough said about that. When the wife got back we sat down to watch a movie (Estes Park kind of shuts down after 6ish and I had specifically rented a room with a DVD player) and here came the icing on the cake

The DVD player did not work. Cables were plugged in and everything was factory settings. All I got was a terrible black and white picture no sound. I went to the desk and informed the kid behind the counter. He said he would make a note of it. I asked for a replacement. Of course they had no extras. I asked if I could have one from another room. He told me they did not have any available rooms. This was funny to me because the neon sign said vacancy and their online booking said they did indeed have rooms available that had a DVD player in them (I know because I looked online after). I had to prompt him to try and make it right in some way and we got 10 bucks back. Great.  We did not stay the night there.

You can call it a lodge and throw some paint on it but that does not cover up what it truly is: A cheap roadside motel. Avoid this place.

Nice staff, clean room, walking distance to downtown and the trolley.  They allowed our large dog. Elk walking outside our room.  We were there at the end of August, before the flood. God bless them.

Short walk to downtown. One block from grocery store and fast food, as well as the shuttle stop to get around town or the national park. Average rooms, very clean. Nice land with a pond for strolling around. We will be staying there again in a few months, the playground and picnic tables right outside our door made this a winner for our small children.

Discovery lodge is a good place to stay. It seems safe, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the location is nice by the lake. I wasn't a fan of the bed I slept in at all; hard and painful. I am usually a side sleeper, but my shoulder was not having it in this bed. That's about the only bad thing I can say about the place, but it is a pretty important issue when it comes to a hotel...

We recently stayed here on a little getaway to Estes Park, and so glad we glad! The $49 price tag per night makes you look twice at it- I don't think we've ever found a room that cheap that is minutes away from a National Park which includes an outdoor hot tub....not to mention a huge balcony that overlooks Longs Peak.

Our room was an updated version of what I had seen in pictures, which was a pleasant surprise- I wasn't expecting much for such a cheap room.  The bed was pretty comfy, and the room had cable.

The service was amazingly awesome though.  The woman at the front desk searched all around and hooked me up with some toothpaste, as I had forgotten mine.  They go out of their way to make recommendations of restaurants, etc.  But the real kicker, was around 10:30 am checkout day, we walk out to our car and find we have a flat tire...I knew we wouldn't make the 11am checkout time, but the checkout desk said no worries, take our time, etc.  Around 11:30am, before AAA had arrived, we got a knock on our door.  It was the manager, who said he just saw our tire was flat, and did we need anything?  Could he do anything for us, like call someone?  So very cool of someone to check up on you like that and see if they can be of assistance- that's real customer service right there.  We will most definitely be back!

*Hot tub does get fully locked (in chains) at 9pm...but a great amenity after a long day at Rocky Mountain NP, so make sure to hit it up before it's closed.

Disclaimer: I do rate based on what you're paying for.

Our stay here was great. Estes Park is touristy, you should know that, but this was a super reasonable priced stay within walking distance of the town center and only 10 minutes from RMNP. On the weekend, $59/night. Free wi-fi, cable TV, balcony- it was a nice stay.

Stayed here mid oct 2013. Room was dirty.  Checked in right at 9pm as office was closing.  Got into room,  realized heater didn't work,  called office at 9:07pm, no answer. It got down to 35 that night. Pretty cold inside room.  At check out next morning,  told lady at office, heater didn't work. Her only reply, "it wasn't that cold last night.  The nerve of people. Love estes park,  will never stay there again.

This is a fantastic little budget motel in Estes Park.  It's right in the middle of town, right where all the action is, and you can walk to lots of stuff.  There's a cute little pond on the property, and although the rooms are basic, they are neat, clean, have refrigerators and comfy beds.  What I liked the most was how incredibly helpful and friendly all of the staff were in the office.  I popped up there several times during my 3 day stay and everyone was delightfully helpful.  Best deal in town, in terms of quality for your money.  And I did my research!

We enjoyed our stay here. It is very reasonably priced for such a touristy area. I felt lucky that I called when I did several months before our trip and managed to book the room we wanted. We chose to stay in the buildings furthest away from the main lodge. These were advertised as being quieter and were single story so we only had one neighbor. Our stay was fairly quiet despite the crowds and it being a weekend. Room was a bit small, but very nice and comfortable. Unfortunately, we were located quite a distance from the hot tub and were too lazy to haul our kids there (plus it was only a hot tub not a pool). We told the kids it was closed to avoid any disappointment.  Basically, all they wanted to do our whole trip was get into their bathing suits and into some sort of water.

They also had their own playground and were conveniently located next to the Estes Park visitor center, which runs free shuttles into the park and into town.

Free wi-fi and cable. Would definitely stay again.

For the price, it is perfect.

Room service is amazing. Only complaint is that on the first day there was a used bar of soap in the shower. No big deal. Called the front desk and they apologized. What can ya do?

Location is perfect for EVERYTHING. National park, downtown, convenience stores etc.

One recommendation that I did make to the manager, David, was to please scrape the ice from the walking areas in the lodge. My wife fell outside and broke the room keys and spilled her food everywhere. He apologized and compensated us appropriately.

There were also barking dogs next to our room which they took care of immediately and he informed me that he fined them HARD (which is explicitly stated in the contract).

All in all, good.

Used dogfriendly.com to find this place...they sent me to a booking site that quoted $79/nt + $10/nt for pooch for one person, $89/nt for 2 ppl. Arrived for checkin and said it didn't show a dog in the booking.. Thankfully keep AMAZING records and had all the info on me and they nicely honored the booking...
Following day, a oops (read my tips) and all was taken care of impeccably...
My only ugh of the establishment, as it sits on beautiful grounds overlooking a part of the golf course, a small lake/pond where we can fish, lots of benches and chairs and trees thruout to sit and enjoy the scenery, is the hearing of my neighbors: TV, toilet, chatter, shower, and banging around, and SNORING?? (really, I should be hearing this??)...at 11:46 at night, when I'm writing this, not easy to sleep...
The staff are super friendly, all take pride and ownership in what they do, bringing this place to a wonderful experience...
As I stayed here Wednesday and Thursday night before Labor Day weekend, the quiet was enjoyable Wednesday, but Thursday as ones came in for the weekend, a bit less pleasant, I might HIGHLY recommend this place for midweek visits, and DEFINITELY for those w 4-legged kids as the grounds are enjoyable for us AND them.

A decent place to stay in Estes Park.  Came in November for some hiking at Rocky Mountain National Park.  Good location- even managed to walk into town during the below 0 temperatures.

Wasn't too impressed with the views that I read about in the reviews.

Room was clean, good amenities but could definitely improve some small things- especially those staying in the colder months.  No coffee makers or hair dryers in the rooms, and a DVD player would have been nice as we were snowed in for a day.

Also there weren't extra blankets-  I don't doubt we would have been given them if asked the front desk, but feel as if we shouldn't have to.

My main issue was that we were not able to control the heat in our own room.  It was very warm, to the point where it was difficult to sleep. Thought maybe we just couldn't find the thermostat.  But when I called the front desk and asked how to control the room temperature, they asked whether it was too hot or cold.  I responded it was too hot, then they proceeded to tell me they had to call the people in a room 2 doors down from ours, as they had the heat control. Unfortunately those people were quite comfortable and so we spent a night in hell.

They must have left the next night because the room then cooled down considerably.

It seems they have temperature problems quite often- and that's a deal breaker for me.
Would stay somewhere else next time.

According to the photos I thought this place was going to be a little more ghetto but I actually loved staying here.

Selling Points:
The selling point for me was the Hot Tub - awesome.

The location was walking distance from downtown - awesome.

The host was super friendly welcoming and made me actually want to come back - awesome.

The bathroom was redone and looks very modern - awesome.

Hands down when I come to Estes Park this is where I'm going to be staying.

Great place to stay with a dog.  We just stayed her this weekend.  We had my baby Newfoundland with us...It was one of the few places we could have her with us.  The rooms are older...with older furnishings...so if you thought is to have a luxurious suite...this place is not for you.  But the rooms were big the bathrooms were clean the room at a whole was very clean.  Patio door as your main door was a little odd...but we always felt very safe.  We even had our bikes tied up outside our door and never worried.  Has a great little pond and the golf course is behind the building.  In the AM...i got up with my coffee and the pup and I sat out and watched the Elk feed from the golf course!  VERY CLOSE!

Staff was wonderful...but I warn you don't loose your key!  They charge $50 if you do.  My BF lost his...either in the room, or possibly when we were hiking.  And they charged him.  (I think $50 is quite excessive for a key...and that is why they didn't get 5 stars.  Cuz we all know you can get a large key cut for less then $10)  Even $25 would be more realistic!

Anyway...loved our stay here.

Place had a nice little pond, and some rooms have a fireplace. There is also a place to cook out, and a shares hot tub.

Rooms have refrigerators too!

Great little lodge! Stayed in November!
Cheap!! 2 minute drive to center of town by river.
So you pay for what you get, remember that when booking, and staying. A king bed with balcony on a Saturday night set us back only $75 all together!!! Steal of a deal for the area.
It has a hot tub-Closes at 9 not 10 like adv in  winter ( I think it's because the office closes at 9 in winter)
Rooms are great, comes with fridge, small flat screen. But I stayed in 309 and the view was greaaaat!
Bathrooms are recently updated, new flooring, sinks, tub, show fixture! The shower was GREAT!!! Plenty of hot water, and water pressure!
Pick up space heater from office when checking in, rooms heater is ehhhhh lacking to say the least but that's why they have the space heaters- works perfectly. Even dragged it out to balcony to sit and enjoy the night.
Owner was really nice! Always makes a difference, then again it seems like everyone around here is so nice!

Gas station across the street for snacks, coffee, drinks etc.
all in all, you get way more than what you pay for here.
Recently negative reviews are just bothersome about here.

This place is amazing for the price. Front desk lady was kind and respectful to my group (three guys age 21,21,19) which is a rare experience for us. We stayed somewhere nearby last night that was bad and we ended up staying an extra night tonight and decided to go here. This place has an HD TV and decent wi-fi. This place was around $60 and worth every penny. Very clean and cozy. Nice bathrooms and spacious living room / bedding area. We will definitely be back.

A pretty new, clean, quiet and inexpensive lodge set in the beautiful Estes Park area. Located on the way out of town on Rt 34, the road that goes down the Big Thompson Canyon towards Longmont, this place provided us with a very comfortable king sized room adorned with a great bay window looking out at the incredible mountains of the Rocky Mountain National Park, for a measly $69 a night.

As I was turning in to their parking lot I had to slow down for a large herd of elk that was nonchalantly crossing the road, stopping to munch contentedly on the roadside flora.

Neat and a half!

I was recently in Estes Park for a convention and feel very fortunate to have found the Discovery Lodge. All of my interactions leading up to the stay were very positive. I made my reservation over the phone and promptly received an email verification along with instructions on how to get to Estes Park via an alternate route (due to the flood clean up).

Upon check-in Brenda at the front desk was very pleasant and helpful.

The lobby offers complimentary coffee and hot cocoa daily and sells a variety of snack items (candy, nuts, etc.) at very reasonable prices.

My room was very clean (aside from some hair in the sink) and comfortable. I really appreciated having cable television (I don't have TV at home) as well as a mini fridge for my yogurt and leftovers.

The location was very close to downtown Estes Park and I greatly enjoyed walking to/from both the Stanley Hotel (where my convention was held) as well as to the downtown.

I will definitely be staying at the Discovery Lodge again.

Very good price hotel!! Close to all the activities. Nice deck and view in our room and they are dog friendly which is always a plus. I highly recommend this place if you are just looking for a quaint cheap hotel in estes park.

Beautiful room, it was clean and well appointed.  The lodge is not just dog friendly, it's an amazing place to share with your four legged family.  Dog treats at check-in, beautiful long and huge grass play area with plentiful bags to pick up after your pooper.  Friendly staff and early morning breakfast made our stay pleasant. Reasonable prices, too.  Highly recommend to anyone, whether you have pets, kids or not!

Stayed here last night for Valentines day in room 301. I chose it for the fireplace which was shown in the picture on their website but no wood is provided and it looked like it is never used? To pay extra for a room with a fireplace and not have any wood to use it is bizarre to say the least. The room itself was very nice and updated only downfall is you look directly at the motel office and don't have much of a view.

The walls/floors are thin as you can hear your neighbors easily which made it difficult at times especially when they choose to get up at 6:00am and you want to sleep in. The hot tub temperature was 96 degrees when we got in and when jets were turned on water shot out of the tub as it appeared to be low on the water level.

Overall, not bad but not spectacular. It was also bizarre the check in lady told us our parking spot was being used by a maintenance guy and the guy was there overnight which seemed odd. To pay $89 a night and have so many quirks not sure if I would return again here. Very close to the main highway as you can see traffic when you are in the hot tub.

Extremely friendly, helpful, courteous front desk staff.
Comfortable, nicely decorated large rooms with amazing views complete with refrigerator, perfect beds and the cleanest bathrooms I've seen.
Amazingly low prices, beautiful grounds to explore and a few minutes walking distance from the center of town.
I highly recommend staying here and hope  people choose this option over some of the more extravagant options available.
Also nice recommendations for breakfast were given. Love this place!
