Good South Florida hotel that has been recently renovated.  It's in an industrial part of town - right next to the railroad tracks...but the parking is free, I-95 is a short drive away, the pool is nice and the nightly rate is a good value.  I splurged on the 2 room executive pool view suite and am very happy with the accommodations

this place is terrible & the pictures are a lie. every surface of this hotel is filthy including the buttons for the elevator. i kept looking behind me bc it didn't even feel safe. its located in an undesirable part of town & the noise from the freight train made this whole experience almost comical. wifi is free but couldn't access it bc i didn't want to keep calling the front desk.

While the lobby, pool, room, and check-in are decent the outside noise is bothersome. To the north is very busy Commercial Blvd, to the east are railroad tracks with very loud train horns 4-5 times an hour and Interstate 95 just past the tracks. To the northwest is Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport. All this noise and walls not thick or insulated enough to tone it out. If it was not for all the noise, I would have given this hotel 3 stars.

Went here for an event that had nothing to do with the hotel, so I was only in the lobby and the banquet hall. The banquet hall decor was standard. Wasn't horrible, but not impressive either. The "best" part was the lobby, which was HOT AS HELL! I know there was a group of people standing waiting for the event to start, but can a sista get some A/C??? I mean... REALLY! Really, there was nothing to the place (from what I could see).  Not sure exactly why it's got 3 "$" signs on Yelp, but if I were them, I'd lower my prices.Just sayin!

How do you give negative stars? This is a terrible hotel trying to pass as a good hotel. It may have been nice once, but no longer. It's dirty everywhere you look; I killed a roach  in the lobby while waiting to check in. No, seriously. They gave away our two rooms that we had prepaid, and fought with us when we insisted; we should have taken the hint, asked for a refund, and gone elsewhere. It suffers from serious neglect. The walls are dirty, the metalwork is rusted, the carpets are frayed, the rooms smell. I'm writing this review on a patio, and ashes have been on the ground near the ripped chairs since this morning. It has a confusing tiki hut/Venetian decor scheme. I could go on and on, but hopefully you get my point. Just stay away.

It is clean and the employees weren't awful. The bathroom sink and the bed's pillows are nice. There is a big, modern TV if that is important.

Check-in took a fairly long time, even though I was the only person at the desk and had a pre-paid reservation. I was first put on the very hookery side facing Commercial Blvd. After a stunned and grouchy "HELLLLL NAWWW" after entering, I immediately called to switch to an interior-facing room as the street and train whistle noise were downright obnoxious, frequent and overwhelming. I was accommodated without any trouble and just popped downstairs to swap keys. I read that some other people paid an extra charge for this, but I did not. The second room is an improvement, but the train track is visible from outside my door at the end of the corridor and can I still hear the noise every few minutes. If I was in and out and doing the tourist thing, this would probably not bother me.

From an inner area room, one is subjected to a blaring radio feed of vintage hits and DJ banter. The pool music delivered such hits as "Wild Thing," "Maneater" and "American Pie." Glegh. At least "Kodachrome" sounded good as I walked back to the car.

You get a voucher for a free cocktail at check-in. I didn't redeem it.

Having experienced several decent hotels and motels in the area each year (many delightfully close to the beach), I would have felt just fine about the property if the rate was $79 instead of $99 (including taxes/fees). It is newly renovated but still an exterior-corridor motel, straight up.

I've been working at Winter Music Conference all week and just stayed here before I fly out of FLL. I have gotten about six hours of sleep total in seven days and really wanted a relaxing place where I could sleep as if dead. Quietly. Initially, this was not that sort of place. At least not before 10 p.m. or so when the trains come by less frequently and the pool music has been stopped.

I originally gave this place two stars, but it's a nice property with kind people and low-key guests. I barely heard any noises from other guests. It may feel like it's in a slightly gritty part of town, but it is a decent bargain and worth a try on the last-minute tip. I booked the room easily on my phone through hotels.com .

Got a last minute deal on Priceline to stay at Universal Palms. Price was fantastic, but I wish I would have spent 20-30 more bucks to get a hotel that wasn't so noisy! I fall asleep very easily and normally I sleep through anything. You would have to take 3 Xanax and wash those down with a six pack of beer to not wake up several times throughout the night at this hotel.  It's next to train tracks, not sure how far they were away but it sounded like freight trains were blasting their horn a foot from my room. There must be a police station near by because the cops would be speeding by several times an hour with their sirens blaring. I could here the guy in the room next to me hacking/coughing all night like he was sleeping in bed with me. The air conditioning unit was super loud every time it kicked on. You might think this is also a problem, but it ended up being a blessing. I finally just kicked that thing to run all night. The noise blocked out most of the stuff that was keeping me awake.

If it weren't all those issues I would have liked the place for the money. Pool was nice and clean, beds and pillows were comfortable, nice big flat screen tv(although no premium movie channels) and very clean rooms.

If you can stand all the racket, this is a clean and economical hotel.

SOOOOOOOOO Where do I begin!!! (Yep, I'm here NOW)
First off to start, the check in process was AWFUL... The night shift girl was absolutely the rudess person I've EVER met before. She charged our card the incorrect price. The website is offering 20% off 2 days or more. We are staying 4 days here. The total she charged was $200 more than my confirmation. I showed this to her and she instantly got an attitude with me. Took the card back and re-ran it!!

Now to the room! I get to the door with 4 bags of luggage and the card DOES NOT WORK... I call down to the front desk to tell her and she asks "What color are the lights that you see" I tell her "ma'am GREEN means GO and the lights I see are NOT green" she then tells me to come down and get another key.... Guess what, I cant leave my bags so I have to lug them back down stairs!!!!! I get to the front desk then back up AGAIN and the key STILL DO NOT WORK!!!! "Lord help me" was all I could say!!!! This time going back dowstairs I wasnt polite. She was too busy entertaining her boyfriend that she could not do her job.

Now the room: Not 5 star...but its ok. Modern flat screen TV, nice table, ok fridge and microwave in the suite as wel. Pillows are soft, vessel sink... BUT THAT BED!!!!!! squeeky and CHEAP. Oh my GOD!!!!! THE worse I've ever slept on! Scuff marks on the walls and rust in the tub... Rif Raft outside the hotel hanging out drinking... I could go on and on but I'm sure you get the point.

I'll give an F for eFfort!!!!
NO I WOULD NOT RECCOMMEND THIS HOTEL... AT ALL

If you are basing your stay off the looks of the photos on this hotels website, RUN! They had a GREAT photographer. Talk about trying to put lipstick on a PIG! Dirty, outdated EVERYTHING, HORRIBLE beds,  a dumpster full of dirty mattresses outside our room. You know what else was right out side our room?? A FREIGHT TRAIN!!! That runs every 30 minutes and is literally 25 feet away from the hotel.. So loud it shakes the walls and the horn sounds about 3 times every time it passed. We left at 1:00am because we couldn't sleep!   Your in the middle of an industrial area/ghetto.. Your better off sleeping on the beach! Obitz has also been no help in getting us a refund!

I would like to let everyone know of the incredibly comfortable and great service we are receiving on a daily basis at the Universal Palms Hotel here in Fort Lauderdale. Joel and his very capable staff including Maritxa and Jeff continue to treat us like kings as we transition to our new home. The delay in our new home purchase closing has caused us to have a very comfortable and inviting extended stay here at the Universal Palms Hotel. I must here also make note of the great food and service which is way beyond my expectations here at the hotel restaurant and bar. Some of the best burgers and sandwiches you can find in the city of Fort Lauderdale are right here. We can have a few drinks and comfortably as well as safely walk back to our room which is without a doubt freshened up by housekeeping with fresh linens and sumptuous towels. Do yourself a favor and get more than you expect for your money with great comfort and satisfaction for the whole family. Make sure to enjoy the pool area with live tropical birds during your stay. I wish to extend a hearty thank you for the great service and safety my family is receiving.

Stayed here and boy what a mistake! Yes, the lobby looks very nice, but you do not stay nor sleep in the lobby! The appearance of the room was ok but everything else was horrible! The beds are hard, squeaky, and uncomfortable! The water pressure was awful, literally had to use the ice bucket to fill it up and pour it over myself, and then there is the train tracks that run right behind the hotel and ALL night long you hear the train horn. So if you want a good nights rest this is deff not the place to stay. But if you dont want to shower sleep on hard beds and don't mind the noise then this is the place for you!

oh wow! Would have been so nice if it looked, or was as nice as it is on the website.
    Because its NOT!!
The tables and some furniture has burns on it, everything is old and chairs, furniture/ bed etc  in the promotional pictures are totally not the same.
    Alot of ghetto tenants.
Im sure the price and fake pictures attract many.
Some tacky group was there for a family reunion and they got into a fight with the transvestite prostitutes that made noise all night by the pool side.
    It was a total mess!!!
    Plus they had roaches!
They really tried to go for something with the dirty old grecian structure and little parakeets in the gazebo/pool area.. but it was mostly sleazy and cheap.

It was a tropical roach hotel.

If you expect luxury .. or niceness- you will gasp in horror & then scheme on leaving..
I only got tricked into staying there because it was supposed to be next to where a friend was having plastic surgery.
    But it was awful.

    Tropical roach motel

I liked the atmosphere, all employees were very friendly and polite and helpful. There was a train that passed infrequently bu it didn't affect any of our sleep.  The rooms and hotel itself were very clean and nice.  I would have given a 4 star but there was no microwave or fridge in the rooms.

I don't know where to start...... The train sounds like it's coming straight into my room honking for me to move!!!! I wouldn't call this a hotel more like a ghetto quickie spot..... This isn't the best neighborhood to go for a late night walk..... There's tiny flies flying around my bathroom and strangers hair on my bed..... I can keep going but I'm sure you get the point..... Spend the extra 20 and don't come here

As far as hotels go I was looking for something that was not expensive but I don't want some small chain hotel. I found this place and it had that big hotel feel with the small hotel price. This place really fit the bill. It was nice lookin the girl at the front desk maritsa had that high end customer service you expect from a Hilton. The pool is nice . Just what I needed . Rooms are good and comfy. The little bar by the lobby had good descent food .

Here's the story of my room:

The train tracks are less than 50 yards from the hotel and they go by at all hours of the night blasting their horn.

There's a decent sized TV, but it displayed so much static it's completely unwatchable. When I looked at the connection in the back I found a jenky, detached cable. I was eventually able to move it around and make it semi-clear.

The safe doesn't open. (Why not just remove it from the room?)

No shampoo in the shampoo DISPENSER. Yep, dispenser.

There was no Privacy door tag to hang on the door handle. I made one out of the hotel notepad kindly asking housekeeping to NOT knock, but they still did (thereby waking me from a much needed nap).

Wifi is awful. It comes in and out and is crazy slow.

The bar in the hotel blasts the radio (including commercials) at full volume, so you have to yell at anyone you're trying to talk to. The waitstaff moves slowly. Burger was acceptable.

The bed and pillows are comfortable though. Check-in for me was uneventful and they were able to accommodate placing me near my sister's room.

I wish I had spent the extra $30/night to go to a decent hotel.

I was very satisfied with my stay here. The facility was very nice and clean. The room was as well. We stayed here for 3 nights and the staff was very friendly. The manager Pete helped us with all of our wants and needs. It is also in a great area you are pretty much in the middle of everything. We will definitely stay here again in the future

We stayed here one night prior to our cruise. The overall hotel is ok. Looks newly renovated.  We stayed on the 4th floor. The Hotel is very loud. Walls are paper thin. I know the noise was mainly guests etc. but it was super loud. (Rude guests) There are trains. We counted one every 30mins from 10pm to 11pm prior to falling asleep.  Loud guests were the major problem we did not sleep well.  There is no Venetian restaurant as the website mentions.  There was an Aviator bar. We were excited upon check in that we got two free drinks there.  We went for dinner and the food was ok. The drinks however were not.  The complimentary drink choices were rail liquor rum/coke, vodka/cranberry etc.  I got straight cranberry juice with no alcohol. My wife got a coke with no rum. LOL.  The service was ok, a bit slow for a slow evening I think. At any rate it was an ok to below average stay for one night. Fortunately we paid with points so it was free.  If you are a solid sleeper, I would say stay here. Otherwise pass.  Any staff we encountered were pleasant.

Currently under construction = workers making a lot of noise 7-8am.

Beds are uncomfortable (you can feel the springs) and pillows are lumpy.

    No microwave or refrigerator.

The first room we were given the keys did not work to open the door so we were moved to a different room.

Room smells horrible and of mold. Walls are paper thin.

Train goes by all hours of the night and morning.

Room makes odd noises that we couldn't isolate or explain.

There are no "do not disturb" signs, so the maids come in and disturb you.

The carpets look as though they have never been cleaned.

Definitely in need of some upgrades, but I can't complain! For the price this hotel is great. We arrived a bit early and we were instructed that we could wait a little for some nicer rooms to become available since they were being cleaned, however, the very kind worker at the front counter decided to upgrade our room to pool view at no extra charge! How kind! The staff has been very friendly, they rooms are clean and have what you would need for a few nights. Wifi works just fine as well. I know a big complaint has been the train, but it's really not THAT bad, As I stated I am pool view on the left side of the lobby and I feel no shaking of the hotel nor do I really find the train all that loud, in fact, my boyfriend just slept through a series of a few train horn blows, and he startles pretty easily. This place is definitely a good choice if you are just looking for a place to stay, not a fancy 5 star hotel, but definitely gets the job done!! I am very satisfied with my stay thus far, I will update if anything else happens over my next 4 nights!

Holy cow, do not stay here unless you hate to sleep and love REALLY LOUD TRAIN HORNS (and dirty sheets, and nonexistent service).

This place is just a joke. There are very busy train tracks within about fifty feet of the hotel, with trains going by sometimes more than once an hour, at any hour of the morning, afternoon, and night, blaring their horns. You will hear it through earplugs. There is no escape!

And why should they maintain the place or offer competent service? None of that will make the trains go away. So they don't even bother.

    No sleep for you. Goodbye!

If you like trains, this is the place for you!!  Not only do you hear the whistles and horns, but it feels like the train is coming thru your room!  The safe was broken, the TV didn't work and shower sprinkles out just enough water to tease you into thinking you took a shower. The bar, well, that's a whole other story.  They were busy, but we sat at the bar for 20 mins before we were helped!!  Then we got charged for a bottle of beer left over from the last customer sitting at our seats.
I gave it 1 star only because you can't write a review without a rating!!  On the way to this place our shuttle stopped at Motel 6. I'm thinking we should have gotten off there!!

Its clean and its cheap.  Staff is friendly:  but has no authority to do a nothing but follow the checklist.

I had trouble choking in from my Hotels.com reservation.  They made me wait about 30 minutes.  I finally got grumpy and they magically sorted it out.

The freed drink is really cheap liquor.  From a list prettied not he recipe.   You can't even have a beer.

The wifi: Its very slow.  Almost unusable.   Clearly the owner has a nephew he thinks is brilliant with computers:  and his lack of ability shows.  (Yo Sparky:The main router was really easy to hack.....)

Train load as hell.  It even sounds its horn as it goes by.

    TV was grainy.

Iron board cover did not fit:  Kindard to iron on a shirt an a board that is not level.

Mattress was covered in nice clean sheet was past its self life.

Curtains dont give you privacy:  As it is a Motel with people walking outside your window.  This is a problem.

If you just need to sleep.  It just OK.

I won't stay here again and I can't recommend it

We live in CA and we're getting ready for our honeymoon cruise to Jamaica. Our ship was sailing from Ft Lauderdale and we decided to be safe and fly in the night before. We flew into Ft Lauderdale, FL and stayed one night at this hotel. Upon arriving there was a long line to check in and it seemed they may have been under staffed or having technical issues. The woman who helped us, Maritza, was very nice and professional. She apologized for the delay and offered us free drinks in the bar and to hold our luggage in her office while we waited for our room to be cleaned. We took her up on her offer and made our way to the bar. We had a drink and nachos and within 10 minutes Maritza was in the bar with our paperwork. We signed and she came back to the bar with our receipt. She let us know our room would be ready in about 10 minutes and we could drop by the front desk for our keys when we were done with our drinks. We decided to take a walk through the pool area before we headed to the front desk. The pool area was nice and clean with lots of patrons. We didn't get a chance to use the pool, but it looked very inviting. We stopped at the front desk and Maritza had our room keys and luggage waiting. We went to our room and were quite surprised to see our room had been upgraded. We had a lovely suite with separate bedroom and kitchenette. The room was spacious and clean and the bed was very comfortable. Especially after a day of traveling! The next day we packed up and checked out of our room, but we still had a few hours before we needed to head to the port. We wanted to get some snacks for our cruise and Maritza gave us her membership card to the warehouse store down the street and held our luggage in her office. We walked there and purchased lots of healthy snacks and returned her card. When we returned we asked her for the nearest walgreens, as we needed a prescription before we got on our ship. She called us a cab and upon returning, we were starving. There was a local Waffle House next door and we decided to stop in and get some food. We were finally ready to head to the port and Maritza got us our luggage and called the shuttle for us. We got to our port on time and had everything we needed! While the hotel had some problems initially, Maritza made our stay very comfortable and she was very sweet and accommodating. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for great customer service. Just ask for Maritza.

My issues I called to ask if wifi works before booking they're like this. I get there and it doesn't work after I booked!

Specials free drinks on booking.com but the bar closed for today! Like its so stupid them don't advertise it!

I complained to the manager he gave me my full refund! And then next morning they're like you should only get 20% off so we need to charge you again!

The customer service at the counter is so poor makes you feel like you're working for them and treats you like shyt

Stayed here during a trip to Sunrise for a concert at the BB&T Center. The room served its purpose as a place to get ready before the concert and crash after the concert so I didn't have to drive back to Orlando that evening. The drive to the arena wasn't too bad either, despite being about 20 mins away.
This isn't a 5 star hotel and rates are pretty cheap, so you should have certain expectations about this kind of place. They met my expectations as a clean place to stay not to far from the arena. The front desk people were nice, the lobby was welcoming, my room was clean, and I genuinely felt safe staying here. So many other hotels in the area have reviews stating there were sketchy things outside the hotel- this did not happen here.
There were some cons, as people have mentioned before. Yes, there is a train that goes by. I was given a 2nd floor room by the pool (further from the tracks), and yes I could hear it all night long. However, this is not the fault of the hotel and I feel that I still got a good night's sleep. Also, by the pool they had music playing which didn't seem to turn off until about 2am and was already back on at 8am. It was pretty loud all the way in my room even- which I found to be worse than the train, though not bad enough to complain to the hotel about.

We stayed at this hotel because all the reviews on most sites were pretty good. They did mention the trains but I thought it may be an exaggeration. NOPE. The train runs almost every 15 to 30 mins and they don't stop. our first night we thought maybe they don't run through the night. WRONG. All night long. If you don't mind trains waking you up or you're a sound sleeper then this is a great hotel for the price.
Not sure why they built a hotel next to train tracks.
3 stars because everything else about the hotel was fine. Room was clean, staff very friendly, fair price and location is great.
