We are a seasoned visitor to the Jacksonville Marriott Springhill Suites/Deerwood having stayed at the hotel at least six times in the last two years when visiting family. Our most recent stay was a five night visit December 2011. The place has seriously gone downhill. The major things we noticed during this past stay were: (1) The rooms, hallways, stairwells and fitness center are NOT CLEAN. This was markedly noticeable especially in any public use areas. The fitness center equipment was filthy and when I went into the nearby restroom to get a paper towel with which to wipe down the equipment, the bathroom itself was terribly dirty. (2) Things just didn't work well - one day, we had no towels after the room was cleaned; another day clean sheets (we think) were left in our room after the housekeeping visit. Since the bed had been made, did they not change the sheets or did they forget them there. On three occassions during our six day stay, we had to call to ask for soap or tissues or other basic items that should have been restocked. One day, the room was askew after housekeeping had been there - the TV was turned, the furniture moved, someone's bluetooth device was left in the room, and our personal items had been rearranged. Let's just say, we don't believe it was due to thorough cleaning. (3) Breakfast has gone sunstantially downhill. It's not cool to serve brown bananas and week old bagels/pastries. The oatmeal and grits are both in little packages now not "homemade" as before. (4) The printer in the business center would not work and the PCs there were especially slow.
All in all we could not wait to leave. Everything was just "off". Please note this is a very OLD Springhill Suites design and the rooms are just weird in their design. But that never bothered us before because this facility HAD BEEN a comfortable convenient place to retreat to after a long day with relatives. We'll look for somewhere different to stay next time. Too bad.

Rooms and common areas are OK--typical older style Marriott SHS fashion. What makes me knock off a star is the super slow internet access here. I have stayed here several times over the years, and the last few times here the internet has gotten slower and slower. I wont be back just due to that fact. gotta be able to work!!

Nothing fancy, but a great hotel for a very reasonable rate. Spacious king bed suites. Large flat screen TVs. Sink area outside the toilet/shower area, but still separated from the bedroom. Very friendly and accommodating staff. Very clean, nice smelling rooms. My family stayed here for a graduation, we had 5 rooms in all and everyone agreed with these positive remarks. Again, it's nothing fancy, but it's a clean, spacious, comfortable place to stay at an affordable rate.

As hometown heroes Lynyrd Skynyrd would say..."oo-oo that smell, cancha smell that smell." That was the smell eight years ago when I first stayed here while interviewing for a job in JAX. And while I must be travelin' on now, I know that things haven't changed. In fact, the decor is identical to what I experienced eight years ago. To boot, this Freebird can't get out the door fast enough...because the elevator from the fifth floor penthouse level still takes an hour to reach the ground floor. Oh, and there's a TGI Friday's across the street!!!

Stayed there last week for a night and everything was great. Stayed there again last night with my husband and 5 children in 2 rooms and there was some sort of "event" at the hotel next door. Well we were awakened at about 1130pm to the sounds of gun shots in total at least 10 or 12 I has my children on the floor under the desk when I went down to the front desk they did not seem overly concerned and that they thought the group causing the disturbance was just firing in the air I don't think people need to be reminded of the laws of gravity needless to say did not sleep a wink and had to travel home about 9 hours away upon check out they did comp one of our rooms but didnt like feeling unsafe

Very Friendly Staff
We just checked out of Springhill Suites. We stayed for two nights and had a room on the second floor in room 214. We had three minor issues during our stay - the first night a child who was old enough to know better ran down the hall at 5am yelling (not the hotels fault, it's the parents fault) and the second problem was the plumbing in our bathroom sink was faulty and leaked. We're laid back, so we didn't complain - we just put a trashcan under the sink to collect any dripping water. Our AC sucked and wouldn't really cool down our room during the day.
The hotel staff is very friendly - always saying hello and asking if there was anything that they could do for us. Chupa chup lollypops are available at the front desk along with fresh lime water.
Breakfast is pretty standard but the meats change daily. Tuesday was bacon, Wednesday was potatoes and sausage.
Fitness center has an elliptical, treadmill and stationary bike. There is a pool and a hot tub located out back.
Very good location wise - very close to St. John's Town Center and lots of food options.

Not the nicest option that exists but for convenience sake and since the staff was friendly, I have to give it two stars. Thankfully, I only needed the room to sleep in, shower and get on the road for a meeting. So for what was paid and for the 8 hours total that was spent there, I cannot complain much more.
Breakfast in the morning was complimentary and not too bad. Basic continental buffet type thing.
Now that I know that area a little better, if I have to go back, I may look at a different place. Just seems outdated and not in the best of shape. Staff was wonderful though.

Was in town visiting family during holiday weekend. That likely explains the reason for so many kids. Room was very clean and shower was impeccably clean. Continental breakfast was regularly stocked. Sink and mirror was outside of bathroom, first time staying in a hotel like that where you lose privacy (traveling with spouse and in-law).

Stay here one night for business on January 19th. The workers Were extremely friendly and went out of there way to be friendly and nice . Their professionalism and charm was remarkable! The rooms were extraordinary and nicely sized. The lobby has a beautiful Contemporary "Art Deco-ish" feel. Beautifully landscaped. A ton of good restaurants easily with in walking distance. I will definitely stay here again!!!

The front desk staff people we saw were friendly and efficient. The rest....eh.
The rooms are a good size and the almost-kitchenette is handy.
I didn't have a ton of cleanliness issues as others have reported but I will address maintenance and upkeep below.
Not so good:
1. I went to lobby around 10:20, hoping I wasn't too late to grab some juice and yogurt. I figured I was too late but I was relieved to see all the table full and people eating and drinking like it was a celebration. Great! Tried to get some juice from the dispenser but nothing happened. Asked an employee if it was empty. Her response, "no, it's turned off." I asked if she could turn it on. "No. Breakfast ends at 10."
Then she refilled her own coffee and sat down and continued her conversation with her brunch-eating co-workers. There was still hot scrambled eggs and sausage in the pans but it was made clear to me that I missed my time slot.
If the employees are invited to enjoy breakfast on their breaks, that's great, good for them. But if the paying guests are turned away at least have enough professionalism to do so out of full view of the customers. So rude!
2. One of the two rooms we had last night had a backed up toilet. We called and reported it twice. We were told someone would probably come up. No one ever did. After an hour, my husband went downstairs, requested a plunger and fixed it himself. He put the plunger in a plastic bag and left it outside the door. It is probably still sitting there because it was when we checked out this morning. Clearly, no one cared to follow through with this. Room 414
3. Flip lock on inside of one door did not work. Tried to let front desk know as we checked out this morning at 5. No one was around. We just took our receipt from the pile left out on the counter and left. 414
4. Tubs have been resurfaced (poorly) and it feels icky under your feet. You feel like you are standing on something dirty. It doesn't look dirty, it just feels that way due to re surfacing product. Rooms 402, 414
5. Daughters wanted to sleep in Saturday and they asked housekeeping to come back after 12. They never returned. Room 414
6. Trash in ice bucket upon arrival. Room 414

I'm really surprised that this facility can call itself a Marriott. There are very few things that are nice about this hotel. They do have the impeccable service that Marriott is widely known for. It was clean and the bed was very comfortable. Now for my negative rant....The sink faucet was broken. To turn it on and leave it on you had to jam a wash cloth underneath the handle. Otherwise the handle would fall down and the water turned off. The shower faucet was impossible to turn on and once it was on, again impossible to turn off. For a quick stay, it's not horrible, but let's be honest - spend the money and stay somewhere better!

My first review for 2015. Yay! I am on a business trip in Jacksonville for a week and was looking for something that had free breakfast so I didn't have to grab something before work. None of the hotels in the area were within my company's policy and I can definitely see why now. The hotel options in Jacksonville leave a lot to be desired. However, I stayed at the Springhill Suites by the Marriott because it was only a few minutes from my office. Also, I am a Marriott Rewards member and held the Marriott brand to a slightly higher standard.
The pros are 1) the staff is extremely nice. The front desk clerks were not talkative but did their job efficiently. The ladies who took care of the breakfast were sweet, down to earth and so hospitable and friendly. I did not encounter any bell boys, housekeeping or maintenance folks. 2) The free breakfast is actually pretty good but I only got to try Monday's breakfast (please see con #1). They had the best biscuits and gravy I've ever tasted. Granted, I haven't had too many in my lifetime but their biscuits were soft, flakey and melted in your mouth. The gravy was so flavorful and had a good meat to gravy ratio. I now have this sort of expectation for all the biscuits and gravy that I plan to eat in the future. Other options available were your typical scrambled eggs, toast, oatmeal, cereal, fruit, bagels, blueberry muffins, juices, milk, coffee and teas. 3) They have in-room mini fridge, sink, microwave and an ice machine on every floor 4) they have a pull out couch, albeit, the couch was not in very good condition. 5) you can see the TV from either the bed or the couch because it swivels. 6) It is very quiet or maybe I had no one stay in any of the rooms near me. In any event, while I was there, I did not hear any door slams, children running around, no loud TVs next door, etc. All I heard was "nothing" and it was strange. 7) It is within walking distance to restaurants and had nearby shopping.
The cons are 1) I wanted to walk right back out as soon as I walked in. The smell that hit me when I walked in was foul but I thought maybe that was just the lobby. So I checked into the hotel and proceeded to the elevator. The elevator had a different smell and was a little dirty. When I got to my floor, the hallway smelled differently as well. When I opened my hotel room it was yet another different smell. None of these smells were pleasant at all. I wanted to check out but it was a Sunday evening and my travel agency was closed. So I stayed the night. I coughed the whole night, got little sleep and am allergic to mildew. So I checked out the next day and went to the Sheraton. It would not have been good for my health had I stayed the whole week as originally planned. 2) the Paul Mitchell toiletries provided were small and I did not like the conditioner. My hair was dry and frizzy. I like to travel light so I always use what is provided by the hotel. 3) the location was not easily accessible. The hotel is located on Southside Blvd but if you don't pay attention, you could miss the entrance. It is behind a strip of restaurants.
So my number one con heavily outweighed all the pros and I will not be back unless they address the mildew and smell issues.

Had a slight glitch on our night of arrival, which was handled very professionally by Sarah at the front desk. She was great throughout, and gave us a great lunch recommendation at the Metro Diner, which we thoroughly enjoyed. So a big thank you to Sarah! The room was clean, and spacious, the usual Spring hill suite quality. Breakfast was good, lots of options, was happily surprised to have the option of blueberry waffles, and Nutella for our toast. Both were a big hit with our 11, 15 and 18 year old kids. I would add however, that our bed wasn't very comfortable, and could have used a mattress replacement (room 314). It was very "springy". Otherwise great stay, clean, great service (house keeping was also very friendly) and good breakfast. Would definitely return!
