This place looked great online. It was actually kind of cute. Our room was nice and private even though it was surrounded by other houses and rooms. The main problem here was that the bed was absolutely the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in. It was like sleeping on a wooden table. By night 3 I was so tired and grumpy. The air conditioning was also extremely loud. I had to sleep with ear plugs. The bathroom also left a lot to be desired and the lighting was very poor. Key West is pretty expensive though and this place was a bargain and in a great location. If you like hard beds and are a heavey sleeper you'll love it.

This place was way nicer than I expected for the price & I would highly recommend it to anyone.  I've stayed in much more expensive hotels in Key West where the decor wasn't as nice, location wasn't convenient & smelled like mold.  I din't have any of these complaints at Douglas House at all.  It was stylish, clean, quiet, convenient (especially the free parking!!!) & the front desk people were amazingly friendly and helpful.  My only complaint was that the WiFi didn't work so well, as we were in one of the back rooms. But I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

I love this place. The room was very clean; the bed bed was comfortable; and the staffs were excellent. Free parking. Just 2 mins from Duval street. Very very convenient!
We stayed there for 3 nites and regret moving to the other B&B (Author's B&B) Author's house was a mess.. we had to come back to douglas house. It is worth the money!

Room was great. Close to everything. Bike rentals next door let us travel the island (they also rent electric cards and scooters). Rooms were big, the wife and i stayed in the upstairs loft and my father in law in the bedroom downstairs. balcony view onto duval is fantastic - however it could get noisy, especially during event weeks/weekends. free wireless internet.

room cleanliness was average. house is a little old and the cleaning lady did not change the sheets our second night. however for the price i would definitely come again.

We stayed the last week of April, in Christmas Palm #3. I slept on the sofa bed and could feel every wire which was pretty uncomfortable but not a reason for only one star. The second night, at about midnight, I felt something hit my arm, then another something hit my arm. Turned on the lights and saw a termite infestation or swarm. I'm not squirmy and thought if I could just kill them it would be okay, but realized they seemed to be coming from under the sofa bed. So I slept maybe 2 hours the second and last night. I told the manager, Joe, what happened and he apologized and said, "that's just what happens in the tropics." I'm a bit sympathetic to that but the whole point of spending $200 on a hotel is to be able to sleep, so I asked Joe to refund my $200 for the second night but got the same excuse, "that's just what happens in the tropics." I was pretty surprised by this response, and asked why he couldn't refund my money just for the night of their bug infestation and he couldn't offer me any other excuse than "that's just what happens in the tropics."

I will not return to The Douglas House and I do not recommend it.

I would recommend the Douglas House. The staff are very nice and accommodating. I loved the whole tropical feel of the courtyard where the pool is at. I stayed in the princess palm room. It was nice, but everything in the room was old. It is located at a good spot if you don't mind a little walking.

Four stars for the room we got, it was a nice large suite with two flat screen TV's we didn't use, nice tropical furniture and treatments, and a big comfy king size bed. There were two unwanted guests staying with us though, one Mr. Hornet, and later on one Ms. Palmetto bug. The jacuzzi came in very handy after a long night of partying, and we did enjoy the complimentary breakfast. If you rent bikes, do it on your own and not through the hotel, You have to wait for them to deliver it and you get what they drop you off. I would have gone for a tandem if I knew places carried them.

I can't believe there were so many positive reviews then realized that there must be rooms that have been renovated and those that have not.  Unfortunately we were the unlucky ones.  The concept of the Douglas House is really nice with the all cottages connecting to the beautiful gardens and sitting areas.  Our room was on the second floor, street side.  Upon entering our room we were surprised by every thing being very outdated.  The bedding, curtains and furniture have all seen better days.  Since we were travelling with friends and they liked their room we decided to suck it up and make the best of it.
First night I woke feeling like sand was in the bed.  Whatever it was did not move so I was relieved they were not bed bugs.  In the morning we were covered with these black things.  I went to the office and the Mgr. acted surprised and said he would look into it.  He later said the ceiling has termites but they caulked the problem.  He said the black things were pieces of wood.  Big fat lie!
To make a very long story short, these black things are termite frass!!! In other words
termite excrement, showering all over us and they knew it!   They know they have a problem and continue to rent rooms that are infested with termites.  The other issue is, how damaged is the infested area and is there a possibility of a collapse.

This place was great.  We stayed in L3 room and it was large and very clean.   Far enough from Duval but close enough so you dont have to walk to far. Rum bar, Circle K,  and Southernmost point very close.  Employees were very nice and helpful.

We have been coming to the Keys for 20 years now at least 3 times a year and have stayed in many places. Douglas House is now our place to stay! Love the atmosphere and location.
We stay in the back cottages by the pool and they are great!
YES you will have bugs and our "other" guests in your room as it is Florida. I live in Florida and occasionally have them in my house but that comes with the territory!
The price for Douglas house is reasonable and well worth it.
We will continue to stay here every year!!

I'm surprised to the negative reviews for Douglas House, as I thoroughly enjoyed my stay there a couple years ago. Can't remember which room we had, but the décor was tropical and warm and very nice. Rain head shower was the highlight of the room fixtures. You absolutely can't beat the price for the location, right off Duval St and very close to bars/clubs. I've been back to Key West a few times since I stayed there, and each time I was disappointed to see Douglas House was booked up. Would DEFINITELY stay there again!!!

STAY HERE if you want the best, easiest, friendliest service + stay.

Everything will be done for you with utter politeness and from-the-heart help.

Front desk staff: GURU MAGICIANS. Real, down to earth, laid back people that will literally take care of ANYTHING you can think up. We wanted bikes -- bam, rental place picked us up 5 min after call. Parasailing and snorkeling? Front desk magician hooked us up with a local biz that does semi-private SAIL eco-friendly tours at amazing rates ($89/person for morning trip lasting til 4pm). Like ghosts and creepy crawlies? There's a late night tour for that.

Location: PERFECT. You're 2 or 3 blocks away from loud partying and cutest boutiques, which gives you quietest rest @ shortest walking distance.

Safety: It's fenced in and no crazy people were around, like some hotels with porches on Duval St.

Room: Cute cabin meets full kitchen and together, they partay. A full size stove and tons of counter space?? So nice. Had we stayed longer, we totally would've taken advantage. Bed is upstairs in a loft, totally cozy and romantic. I adored the crazy staircase going up to loft. Place has personality!

Parking: they'll hook you up! You won't be left stranded. They got a lil lot out back and they'll watch for street spots for you.

Oh, and did I mention free unlimited available-at-all times hot tea and coffee?? I love my hot tea and finally here I didn't have to microwave it. All kinds of maps are around the coffee bar, awesome pool and hang out lounge spots, everything is made FOR YOU and it's impossible not to have an awesome memorable raving time!!

I'm not sure what other places got going, but SERVICE to me is what fosters an unforgettable, easy, chillax experience and I'm only staying here from now on.
Book ahead, this hidden gem is a popular, respected place! ;)

had a really nice time here.  nice, clean and a cool setting.  we had a little A-frame type deal on the second floor with an outdoor seating area.  we met a few other couples there so it was fun hanging out by the pool.   best of all, a kitchen.  we went down to the marina every morning to get fresh shrimp which we would steam and stash in the fridge along with all our other goodies.  they provide a little breakfast - muffins and cereal and juice.  perfect.  i'd go back in a heartbeat bc i loved cooking fresh seafood.

It was the perfect place to stay for the right amount of money. I was looking online for a few weeks trying to find a cheaper B&B but one that still had a decent amount of stars. We narrowed it down to 3 and the Douglas house had the most spacious room for the area around duval that we wanted. The room was huge! We had a full size kitchen, living room and bathroom. I have zero complaints about the room, we were really surprised how nice it was for the amount of money we paid, which was not much considering the area it was located. They did not have breakfast and I couldn't get the wifi to work even though she gave me two different passwords. They have off street parking that is included, another plus! I will definitely stay here again when I go to key west

The room itself was a great size & beautiful, however it was pretty dirty.  Even after housekeeping came the floors turned your feet black - pretty gross.  The pool was pretty disappointing, it is very small and not very inviting.  For the nightly charge I wouldn't stay here again.

Our room was filthy.  The photos of the property look much better online than in person. I received an email from the management for the Douglas House asking for feedback. I gave them my honest feedback written professionally with the intent for them to address various issues that would cause me to not return. After more than week I have yet to have received a reply. If I had received a reply, I would not have given this feedback on Yelp. A simple acknowledgment would have boosted my perception of the Douglas House.

Awesome place! Right by Duval. Close to everything. Rooms were nice and clean. If you need something tell them.

Kris was like a concierge for us. Hey we were thinking about getting a scooter. He asked when. Now I guess I replied. And BAM! They will be here in 10 min.  Same with a Kayak tour. He even got them to pick us up!
