We loved this hotel and would stay there again if we ever go back to Key West.  I wish  every other hotel chain would take a lesson from the owners of this 3-hotel chain because I am sure they would learn that what makes a hotel memorable and stand out from others is the fantastic staff. We couldn't have been happier with the service. I loved how nice everyone was from the waiters in the restaurant (delicious by the way) to the pool wait staff, activities director, pool boy, etc.  Very well done. Our room and the amenities within were just delightful.

Great hotel. The rooms are a good size and very nice. The staff here was really as good as I have seen anywhere. They were so friendly and always willing to help with anything and everything we could possibly need. Stay on the top floor if you go because the rooms are not well insulated from sound, but it wouldn't keep me from going back. Must be one of the nicest hotels in Key West.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at this delightful and quaint hotel. Felt like we were on a resort. Good room, comfortable bed, great customer service, loved the private beach access and excellent location (on the quiet end of Duval street). We were able to walk anywhere and yet not have to deal with the noise and craziness of Duval street. Cafe/bars on site has the best happy hour in town and there are lots of activities on the property hosted by the hotel. We saw the most gorgeous sunset every night we were there. Highly recommend it.

Great hotel. Very relaxing. Kind of far from the duval action (can be good or bad...)

Terrible beach.

Would stay again anytime.

DO NOT use the scooter rental place across the street. Go elsewhere. They make up damages that don't exist after you return the scooter. Then they charge you a kings ransom on the deposit credit card without telling you. surprise!!!

Wally the front desk manager and Julie the Concierge are forged in the fires of Mount AWESOME! Clone them immediately. Also the nachos in the cafe are the best in Christendom, and the pier lets you view the sunsets from your hotel without crossing the island to Mallory Square or navigating souvenir hucksters yelling FIVE DOLLA. Will return.

I have a few complaints about Southernmost on the Beach. They are as follows...

1) The bathrobes are small and scratchy. I like a nice, comfortable bathrobe. Cheeca Lodge in Islamorada had some nice bathrobes that I was tempted to steal. But the bathrobes at Southernmost in Key West were more like hospital gowns. Wrapping oneself in newspapers and securing them with duct tape might be more comfortable.

2) I stayed here for four days and, during that time, I smashed my knee and/or toes on the leg of the awkward bed frame roughly 173 times. Seriously, who builds a bed frame with legs that jut out and, on top of that, what kind of dim-witted hotel decorator decides that these bed frames would work perfectly in their smallish hotel rooms?

3) The maid service left a bit to be desired. They didn't clean our room until we called the front desk to request that they do so, and even then, they failed to empty the ice bucket. I realize that this sounds a bit nit-pickey, but what else are they ignoring in the process?

All that said, Southernmost on the Beach offers a great location at the end of Duval Street, plenty of parking, a nice little beach and multiple pools (and poolside bars). There's a bit of room for improvement (especially considering the price), but this place is generally quite nice.

Four adults traveling together, stayed here one night following Labor Day.  September is not the best month to travel to destinations in the south as the weather is still very hot and humid making it challenging getting around on foot during the day if you are not used to walking (Key West is about two-miles wide). Despite the weather Key West was fairly crowded and the hotel had lots of guests at the pool during the day (no vacant chairs at check-in time). We booked one West Lawn Partial view king room which was in building C on the first of two floors and one West Lawn Ocean Front  King which was on the second floor of two floors. The hotel is 'motel-style' as all room doors open outward onto a sidewalk. On the plus side for us this hotel has a great location (if you don't want to be near the crazy sunset action), friendly staff, clean room, plenty of parking. On the negative side for us the rooms are small, bathroom sink/vanity is outside the bathroom in the room right next to the air conditioner unit. Both rooms had an overwhelming musty smell which never goes away. The beach and water were very dirty which nixed plans to swim in the ocean. The beach was not groomed / raked like is it in many other similar-type locations that do nightly grounds cleaning. Although there is a bar and cafe on the property neither is indoor, all seating is outdoor under a roof. It was too hot to be outside for any length of time [during the day] so we avoided these locations. During times of the year when it is cooler these would have been ideal. Lastly, all the taxes, etc... add up making it a very expensive stay that we did not enjoy as much as we hoped.

My wife and I took our first trip to Key West and stayed at Southernmost on the Beach, via a recommendation from a family member. I guess technically I'd give it 4 3/4 stars. The only "complaint" I would have was the bed. I noticed several other reviews mentioning comfortable beds, but my wife and I woke up with achy body's each morning. But we quickly got over them in the warm relaxing sun. Other than that, we have no complaints whatsoever.
The hotel grounds were kept meticulous, and all the staff were friendly. We were there for 10 days, (8/12 - 8/22) so we got to know a lot of the staff. Stand outs were Michael (director of activities) and bartenders Carrie & Megan. Along with James and Doug as well, although we didn't get as much time with them behind the bar. Taking orders for drinks and food poolside, was the always smiling, fun and outgoing Heather. We never felt like we were "waiting" for our drink. Within minutes of her taking our drink order, it was in our hand.
There are 3 pools and the hotel has a private beach. (We've been to Bermuda, so the beach just wasn't our thing. It was dirty compared to Bermuda beaches). I've heard there are prettier/cleaner beaches in Key West, but we didn't search them out. We had enough fun by the pools, one of which over looks the beach, and nights out in town.
Southernmost is located on Duval, but its on the opposite end of the "craziness." It's exactly what my wife and I were looking for. Its own quiet, secluded spot, but still within walking distance of everything. We're NYers, so walking for us isn't a problem. Mallory Sq. is a $5 cab ride away if you're not into walking that far. Plenty of shopping/restaurants/bike,scooter rentals, all within a block of the hotel. Some nights we spent experiencing the Key West nightlife. Other nights we stayed poolside at the hotel. Best of both worlds. It's definitely pricier than other hotels you can find in Key West, but I doubt we would ever stay anywhere else if we decide to visit again.  Something as simple as including a continental breakfast and I'd probably justify the cost of our stay.
That being said, our room was perfect. On the small side for the cost, but clean, well kept, updated decor. Large shower. Fits 2 ;) Housekeeping daily. We had a balcony with a distant view of the ocean. It wasn't so distant. Great view to wake up to every morning.
The Southern Most Cafe on the property was great. We ate most of our breakfast meals here, venturing out to a couple restaurants for breakfast only a few times. If you like bacon, get yourself a side order at the cafe. Ha! It's great bacon though, for real. Lunch is pretty decent and we had dinner here about 4 times during our 10 days. Each time very enjoyable. Some better than others, but overall, very good.
There's no doubt, we'd recommend Southernmost on the Beach or the other southernmost rooms across the street. The hotel alone would bring us back to Key West. It's almost like a resort. Always something to do, or absolutely nothing, if you choose. We loved it.

Quiet end of Key West but very easy access to shopping, restaurants and bars. If you don't want to go out one day there are a ton of fun activities to do right on the property. Our room was great and the staff was super nice. Can't really think of something to complain about.

Just got back from staying a week at Southernmost on the Beach. And I was so impressed! Everything was excellent! The rooms were immaculate and had a ceiling fan which I thought was a nice touch! There is also a huge flat screen TV in HD with DirecTV in the room. The pics I saw on this site definitely do not lie!! The views are spectacular! Our room was listed as a "distant ocean view" but let me tell you, we had a great view of the ocean!! The staff was courteous, friendly and also very down to earth, the seemed all very happy and eager to help! And if I can just give a shout out to our 2 favorite bartenders Mark and Megan, they rocked the pool bar! And the location was also perfect. You are at the opposite end of Duval Street so it's a little quieter, but only a few short blocks away from all the action. I definitely recommend renting an E-car (electric car) to see the island, It's fairly reasonable and gives you a great idea of what the island has to offer. You can rent bikes and scooters too, but who wants to do that much work on vacation! One thing I was really impressed by was that on Friday the day we were leaving, our flight didn't leave until 7pm so we had to check out and then hang around all day. The hotel staff held our luggage for us for the day and even let us have access to all the hotel amenities for the day. Then when it was time to go, they allowed us to shower and freshen up in the fitness center before our flight! The hotel was amazing! We loved our vacation and cannot wait to go back!!

We stayed at this hotel for only 3 days this past August/2012 and we are nothing short of impressed. Wile a bit pricey, it was still way better priced then the bigger hotel chains, yet the service was way beyond that. The room felt brand new and we loved the modern furniture yet very classy atmosphere. The people are wonderful, all so kind and eager to help.
Having stayed at hotels like the Ritz and the Waldorf, this hotel would easily earn my vote as even better in some ways.

Price is ok, but not cheap.

staff very friendly

My friend and I are staying here for a girls vacation and are on day 3.  We love the hotel.  It's well-appointed, the rooms are clean, modern, with attractive decor.  The view from our balcony room over the water is gorgeous, and it's extremely quiet. You also have access to the other sister properties on the street and their amenities.      This property itself has a pool, sunning dock and small beach, spa, bike rental, and large restaurant that serves pretty good fare.  There are also jet ski rentals next door.  It's a half block off Duval (main restaurant/bar/shopping street, but it's on the quiet lower end of Duval.  A great hotel!!

The website is not user friendly when it comes to understanding the options across all the sister properties though.  The Southernmost on The Beach, La Mer Hotel, and Dewey House are all side-by-side on South Street and are on the beach itself.  Southernmost Hotel USA is across the street -- one block off the beach.  Again, stay at one and you have access to amenities at the others.

This place is great.  Have stayed several times.   Was just there last week.  The place has been expanded and improved since our last visit.   So great.  The staff could not be nicer and went out of their way on several occasions to go WAY the extra mile.  Live music by the pool everyday.   Beach right next door.   Restaurant and bar next door.   Excellent location by Duval.   We are picky and this was a great experience.   It is obvious that they are trying hard.   Stay here.  Great for families.   Only wish it were a little less $, but hey, it's Key West, so probably normal.

A beautiful and clean hotel! Stayed two nights over the weekend. Perfect warm weather. Friendly and timely staff. Great drinks. The rooms were beautifully decorated and freshly clean as well as spacious. Paying extra for the lawn rooms with partial ocean view was way worth it. It was amazing to wake up to palm trees and the blue ocean. Just a few steps to hammocks next to the water (relaxing and romantic). The pool by the Sand Bar was conveniently located were live music and the party was happening at all times. Loved this property and will definitely return.

This place was unbelievable.. I was amazed how beautiful and comfortable the rooms are.. I am very skeptical when it comes to hotels that I haven't visited before and very, very extremely picky.. I rather pay a little extra so I won't ever have to deal with a musky, moldy room.. This place was super clean and very well kept.  I had twin Queen beds for me, my daughter and two god children for a long weekend and it was very comfortable.. I have a major back issue and they accommodated  me with extra down feather pillows for support.. I had six huge down feather pillows.. It was awesome.. The food at the resort was a lil pricey for my budget but that was to be expected.. The pool area and the drinks were amazing.. The beach eeehhhh was a lil murky it wasn't that pristine crystal blue water but that's what's expected in the Keys unless you go out in a boat and visit one of the private beaches.. They had wonderful hammocks that my kids loved and just the ambiance was very soothing and welcoming.. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with all my questions and concerns.. Want to return soon with the hunny.. I can't wait!

Absolutely fantastic, must stay hotel in KW.
Advantages:
*Informative concierge - I know it seems redundant but they really were on the money.
*Comfortable beds/rooms - Extremely comfortable bed and the room was the size of a small apartment.
*Beach - One of the few locations in KW that has a private beach.
*Location - Right off Duval St. I recommend renting bikes for dirt cheap and biking around KW. You will save money on gas and get exercise too.
*Tanning Pier - Seriously do I need to say more.
*Activities - From hula hooping to newlywed trivia (not married yet so didn't partake).
*Staff - Everyone was helpful and friendly.
*Pool - A decent size but nobody was really using it. Most people were tanning on the outskirts.
*Restaurant - Right on the beach.
I would not stay anywhere else the next time I go. Couldn't be happier with my stay. ENJOY!

First let me explain my rationale and breakdown on the 1 star rating:

HOTEL 5 stars,                   *****
PRICE 3 stars,                     ***
PRICE INCREASE 1 star.  *

When I explore a new hotel with which  I am unfamiliar, I first investigate what guests have concerns about and try to find a common thread or repeating theme.  I believe a 1 star rating gets read more than a 5 star rating, and for that reason alone I placed it into the one star category for the sole purpose of reaching an expanded audience.  Now having said that, on to my review;

Foremost, thank you LaSalle/Highgate for pricing a loyal 10 year devoted customer as myself out.  I have been a faithful LaMer guest for about ten consecutive years now.  When I first started staying at the Ocean View rooms at LaMer they were about 350 a night.  Last year they were 650 and next year they will be almost 1000.  Seriously?  I know that my business (and that of other repeat customers) is not large proportion of your overall clientele, considering the vast amount of first timers staying at your venue every year.  But seriously?  I know you are in business to make money and as a supporter of capitalism I agree with this tenet.  But seriously?  I used to correspond with Matt and Rozsa every year to arrange reservations, and knew your staff by first names.  And incredibly they knew mine.  Omar my friendly groundskeeper, was ALWAYS so genuinely happy to personally greet me and actually we both CRIED every time we had to leave for the year. Mike at the bar, (took over for Rich) ALWAYS made THE best Pina Coladas. Rich remembered us personally EVERY YEAR and always gave us the first on the house as a welcome home.  You can not buy this kind of relationship or find it everywhere.   Heather at the pool always had a smile for us every year we did the shores bar.  Samantha was ALWAYS THE consummate professional hostess at LaMer and just a warm bubbly person, and her character was positively infectious and just made your day.  She was THE reason we went back the second time and returned ever since.  I will miss her the most.   I knew the layout and the always helpful and professional concierge and the staff intimately.  In the hotel business these events are called "goodwill" and are priceless.  Earned at a high cost and easily lost.  Summing up, my stays at LaMer were always memorable, relaxing and excellent.  Knowing that,  it is painful for me to now establish a new set of similar relationships with another venue.  But establish I must, not just for fiscal reasons, but for the principle of it.  In my opinion, there is absolutely NO justification to increase prices this dramatically and quickly.  A 6% average increase can be expected, but this?  Seriously?  Please don't get me wrong, I CAN afford to pay 1000 a night for room 410 at LaMer, but I would rather spend the differential on activities or meals.  Now if others want to spend this kind of money on a nice room be my guest, or in this case, yours.  But not for me.  There are other choices.  The good memories I have shared with your staff will last me my lifetime, and I am thankful for all of them.  I am not emotional or bitter, just sad.  And I know my single voice in the wilderness means nothing in the world of multiconglomerates like LaSalle Group or Highgate.  And please Colleen, no boilerplate reply.  I understand all too well, the logistics of corporate takeovers and buyouts better than most, having lived through too many in my own career.  It is, in the end, only business.

Megan,

If I have reminded you why you love working for Southernmost than why do you condone the doubling of rates over the last two years?    IF you truly do love your guests than why do you cast aside ten year loyal guests with rates that have doubled?  IF you look forward to their return how can you treat people like this?  I know your staff is superior.  Too bad the new management does not feel the same toward loyal repeat customers.  I know you can not apologize for the new owners.  They have made their decision.  They are in it for the money.  Unfortunately it will not be any of mine.  I have moved on.

We stayed for a night for a mini baby moon since I'm pregnant. I loved the different pools, and the room was roomy but cozy and comfy. We went to the tranquility pool which was so nice, we were the only ones there, it was super relaxing. Loved how close it was to the Hemingway house and the lighthouse, we walked everywhere. Def recommend you stay here if you got the moolah, it is indeed pretty pricey.

This place is basically heaven. I have nothing bad to say about southernmost on the beach. Every day my husband and I enjoyed our stay!

Dexter helped us check in and he was kind and awesome. We mentioned it was our honeymoon and he made sure we had a bottle of champagne, flutes and rose petals in our room. Very romantic for us!

A lot of our time, we spent at the pool by the shore bar. My husband would watch espn from the pool and I would relax in the sun reading. The bartenders kept our drinks full and were super friendly.

The Southernmost Cafe is on the property and we loved starting our day there with breakfast. The whole Southernmost area is gorgeous.

We participated in some of the hotel activities. We loved beer school with Mark! In fact, we participated in beer school twice (but didn't volunteer any answers the second time). Ryan, a super cool guy, ran the games. He was enthusiastic and reminded us about things, keeping us involved. We also enjoyed a corn hole tournament, wine school, bingo and a newly-wed game. Excitedly enough, we won the newly-wed game and went on a free sunset cruise with food and drinks included! It was an awesome way to end our honeymoon.

My husband and I plan on returning to Key West and we wouldn't stay anywhere else.

This place was relatively great compared to other places here.

Pros: Beachfront, nice cafe, clean facilities, Ease of access to nearby attractions; Duval st., beaches

Cons: Price, The hotel beach isn't really a beach

Overall, we stayed here & would definitely look for other options if visiting again.

I was treated deplorably by the staff of the hotel.  Do not waste your time.  The pictures of the "beach" are a joke; there is no beach. It's a man-made pile of sand absolutely covered with a huge amount of kelp and other sea plants so that it's unusable.

The hotel itself is very nice.  For the premium rate I would have expected a little better service from the hotel staff.  At check-in they were very short and seemed flustered. Do not go for the ocean view  room. It is not worth the $800 and "ocean view" is a bit misleading. The only view we had was on the balcony and saying it qualified as an ocean view is a stretch.

The pool and bar staff are great. The multiple pools, bars, hammocks, dock with swimming access and other amenities make this a one of a kind property.

I would stay here again, but I would not pay for the ocean views.  Just get those at the pools and private beach.

First of all the resort is amazing, the pools, grounds and staff were great.  We were in town for the power boat races and booked a room for $500+.  What a joke the coffee maker and fridge were in the closet, there was barely enough room to lay out our suitcase.  We asked if they had a better room they claimed they were booked.  The next morning when we checked out we commented on the room to the guy at the front desk he laughed and said yeah that is the joke around here with the size of the room.  Way to make your guests feel as we got ripped off for a room that is a joke at the southern most!

We sat under a lit tree outside on the deck overlooking the Atlantic. Myrna our waitress, was FABULOUS and took exceptional care of us. She spoke absolute truth about the menu and we had an amazing meal.

The Signature Lobster appetizer was to die for- it comes as more of a chowder looking dish, you can dip some bread or eat it with your spoon and you will die!!!

The fresh catch was Yellowtail Snapper and it was insane!!!! Amazing wines paired with the meal and Myrna made it all happen. If you have the chance to come here- REQUEST HER!!!!!

To top it off- Key Lime pie. Amazing meal. Amazing.

Everything from the front desk staff ,to the room, to the resort is amazing here. Our room was upgraded to pool/ocean view. The room was beautiful and clean. The pool area and tanning deck are relaxing and have a spectacular view.
The location is excellent as you are less than a mile away (20 minute walk) from the other side of Duval and Mallory Square.
The only minor complaint I had is that the house keeping crew was very loud. They were calling each other screaming down the hall as we were in the room still sleeping at 11:30AM. This shouldn't happen in  a hotel of this caliber.
Conclusion:
I highly recommend it and we will be staying here again on our next visit to Key West.

Love this Hotel! Days, weeks, and months of research I'll say I have found a great spot. If I were to go back to Key West again this is where I'd stay. It was our home for 14 days before a week of stay in Miami. $200+ per night for the room I got for my son & I for his High School Graduation present. It is very pricey when I think about it now of how much I paid, but I don't regret one bit. Having to have a quality time with my son is always priceless! This hotel is close to Duval Street, a starting point to get to Mallory Square and such at the very end. I enjoyed the stoll along Duval Street coz there's stores to go shopping, restaurants, and bars to go hopping at. And this hotel btw also have a nice restaurant right next to it on the beach that serves good food too! It is a Sunshine State, went in July 2009, so it was really hot out during that month. Bring your cold bottled water (besides your cameras) if you're gonna be out all day. I also rented a car the second week so we could drive around and explore more on the other keys.

When we stayed here around Christmas of 2013 (yeah, I know I'm wayyyyyy behind on this review) I picked it because I wanted a hotel on the beach with a beach view and away from the maddening crowds of Duval.

Beach? Not really.  It is next to a public beach which is sorely lacking IMO and the only way you get a true beach view is if you are on the very end of one of the units or in one of the ones that face the railing which is next to the beach.  You live you learn.

But our room was towards the end of one of the blocks and when we sat on our very nice balcony we were able to see the ocean and the play pit area where they teach yoga and play games.

The room itself was perfect! Roomy, a sitting area inside as well as on the balcony.  Nice large bathroom with a big shower and a comfy bed.  It is really at the end of Duval so you never hear any of the noise that is further up the street.  Plus it is in a great location (ok so you walk next door to the pier) to see the sunrise and sunset.

Check in at the front desk bothered me some as the guy checking us in was seriously on "island time" and didn't bother to tell us about certain amenities of the hotel like another person was telling those he was checking in.  We got in early so had to check our bags and change clothing in the gym (December and ice to December and sun and 70's) and wander off.

Housekeeping was always prompt and very good but here is something that didn't make me happy one bit!  I left my phone charger in the room when we left and had to jump through hoops with their phone system to get someone to pick up and talk to me about it.  Got transferred to housekeeping who found the charger and said they could send it to me for $5.  WTH???

A. I'm not giving my CC number to someone who said they were from housekeeping and B. After all that money we dropped staying there you couldn't send me my charger as a courtesy?

We do want to return to Key West and staying here again would be an option.

Beautiful hotel! Our room had an ocean view, and it was right by the sand and the awesome pier where people can hang out and relax on the actual pier. I didn't realized the pier had steps that go down into the water till later. Very very cool!

I love the hammocks hanging from the trees! It's perfect for laying on during sunset or even after dinner to enjoy the night sky or the ocean. The room itself was very plantation chic, and I like walking out into the balcony every morning and after dinner to relax.

The staff were very accommodating and prompt, the hotel itself is very nice and if you're willing to spurge alittle, this place is a nice treat. The Mr. and I really enjoyed our stay and have talked about coming down here when we visit his parents up in West Palm Beach for years to come.

There's two hotels, this one is on the beach and the other one is around the corner from this location.

Cheers!

This is an awesome hotel with the friendliest staff. The rooms are a great size updated and furnished nicely. They have everything you can ask for!! Great pool- little beach- lounging outdoor spaces that took your breathe away. Our view was heavenly!!! The food was great as well! Can't wait to return!!

The room is rather small but clean and modern. The location, views, and accommodations are what make this place worthwhile. Three pools, live music almost all day and late into the evening. Plenty of lounge chairs, hammocks, and watering holes to keep anyone looking for that concrete jungle getaway satisfied.

Although the service was nice, they didn't bill me correctly and so i had about $50 more in charges than I should have. When I explained it to the guy at the front counter, he quickly skirted around why the charges were there, but I know it wasn't correct.  They get so busy at the counter that the shortcutting cost me.  Not worth the back and forth...but it is why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5.

Pretty decent hotel but the Hyatt is still my favorite on Key West.

The biggest thing to note here is the location.  It is down at the south end of the island.  This side is a little quieter (but not quiet) and there are more of the gay bars on this side.  So if you mind drag queens giving you the once over, stay on the other side.  Me, I thought it was kinda funny.  Still, the north side was more fun.

So the property is part of a group of southernmost hotels, all are older hotel style or b&b setups.  This one was an older hotel style, with all the hallways and things being outside.  Quaint but not luxurious.  The rooms were pretty small but nicely fitted out, marble and a big stand up shower (though we were in the handicap room randomly, not sure if all the showers were this big).

The pool was pretty nice, with a bar right there.  The beach was tiny but right there and available as well.

Overall, this was nothing wrong with this place but it lacked the it factor.  I probably wouldn't stay again, especially for the $500/night or so they ask for in the Winter.  That said, you could do much worse.

My boyfriend and I had a spectacular time. The hotel was very beautiful and everything was delightful. This was all a surprise for me since I had no idea where we were headed and boy oh boy was I surprised. The guy at the front desk wasn't the greatest help and he made no attempts at helping us but the concierge desk was absolutely the nicest man. He helped us book an excursion and he was instrumental in making sure we got every place we wanted to go without any confusion.

As far as food goes, there is a great place to eat right across the street which we wish we would have ventured into earlier since it was closed on Sunday. All in all this was a great experience. If you get a chance make sure to go to the butterfly sanctuary down the street, it's breath taking and super neat. Thank Southernmost for making it a great weekend :)
