History

Established in 1925.

Deep in the throes of creating Miami Beach, real estate investor/developer, Carl Graham Fisher, turned his attention to a wedge of land with coconut palms and mangroves cast adrift in Biscayne Bay. Fisher bought the 216 odd-acres that now bear his name from Dana A. Dorsey, South Florida's first black millionaire.

Fifteen years before his death, Fisher's path crossed that of William Kissam Vanderbilt II. Fisher coveted Vanderbilt's 250-foot yacht, the "Eagle. "My island for your boat," Fisher offered, and Vanderbilt promptly accepted.

In 1925 with initial deed in hand, America's richest sportsman set about fashioning a private retreat rivaled by few in the world. He built with a Mediterranean-style mansion facing the Atlantic Ocean where he and his wife enjoyed a long storied history entertaining the luminaries of  its time. Vanderbilt encircled his state mansion with lush landscaping, gracious guest houses, tennis courts, swimming pools and a nine-hole golf course; now all restored.

One of my favorite resorts to go to anywhere in the world.  It is a hidden treasure off   the south tip of South Beach.  You need a ferry to get there.  The island is private, 110 acres, and you get a golf cart to travel the island.  There is a resort on the island, very few people know about it.  It is kind of a hidden treasure, so maybe I shouldn't disclose it, as it is one of my favorite places.

There are condo on the island, priced from $1m to $40 Million.  Everyone on the island is super rich and high end.  If you want to mingle with the elite, this is the place to be.

    Wow.  Just, wow.

Attended a gorgeous wedding here, and everything from the service to the rooms to the food was absolutely fantabulous.

The cottage rooms are medium-sized, but well-appointed, with a large, comfortable bed, small sitting area with couch and club chair and a decent-sized bathroom separated into two portions.  The best part was the personal jacuzzi in a private patio.  The Hotel itself (the old Vanderbilt Mansion) is kind of crumbling, with water stains, chips and peeling paint, but that only adds to its charm.

The food blew me away.  It's not a Relais Gourmand property, but it honestly should be.  Holy mackerel, it was good, especially the baked goods, which were exceptional.

The spa was just all right.  If you're there and you need to get dolled up, you're kind of stuck with it, unless you want to do your own hair and makeup.

Let's move on to the personal golf carts that come with each room.  Yes, you get your own golf cart in which to cruise around the island.  They all have keys in them, and though you can't get off the island in the cart, I kept wondering how easy it would be for someone to lift one and get into all sorts of trouble, especially given the easy availability of alcohol at the Hotel.

The long and the short of it is that I do not expect to be back.  However, I would highly recommend the venue for someone who lives on or near the island.

NB:  Be prepared to pay for this fine service.  It's expensive.

Located in a very private island (Fisher island). The security agents are pretty nice. They're just doing their job so you can't blame them for that. The report itself is beautiful. Great places to eat. The view is amazing. I've been here a couple of times and the staff have been really nice. Definitely a great getaway location. There's also a small supermarket on the island in case you need anything (although it can be a bit pricey). Great place overall. Bring bathing suit and lots of sunblock or Sun tanning lotion!

I went here while on vacation and was thoroughly impressed with all aspects of the resort. The service was great - everyone was very polite and friendly! You have gorgeous beach views, private pools, golf carts, an amazing restaurant and bar and even an aviary with hilarious parrots! Super fresh ingredients and lots of good fresh fish options at the restaurants (not for me, but a few in my party enjoyed their catch of the day) and really light, fresh veggies and salads. Everything you would expect from a private island.

Great Sunday beachside with fabulous service. The gazpacho with crab is the best in town. Huge lumps of crabmeat and served cold. The swordfish was so good today with thier tropical salad with avocado was so perfectly ripe and fresh.
Now for the best part, dessert. The key lime was the best I have ever had!!! Looks small but actually when u eat it, it's so delicious and fabulous, it's the right size due to the richness.
Great day, great food, great fun. Love it!
