I love wandering the streets of historically rich cities--a reason why I return so often to Saint Augustine.  Normally, we opt for a cheap hotel, but it was our anniversary and a bed and breakfast suited the occasion.  we searched through the various offerings and happened upon Castle Garden.  I was sold at "an old carriage house to the castle warden."  Staying at Castle Garden made my historically and romantically rich anniversary sojourn complete!  Brian, the innkeeper was so welcoming and comforting.  The carriage house is nestled right in the heart of the historic district just a few blocks from the castillo and the city gates.  Our room was charming, clean and quaint.  The furnishings of the house were eclectic, colonial and artistic.  Each time we came "home", I felt as i was venturing back in time.  I loved coming home to this charming carriage house--creaky steps and all.  The only complaint I had is that the front door was a bit hard to access with our key.  I think the lock needs to be fixed.  The garden could also use some sprucing up.

I now know that I have a place to come home to when I visit Saint Augustine.

My experience with this place was terrible. They have about the worst customer service you can imagine.

I put in a request for a room on Match 28. I requested an $89/night room for april 17-19. The confirmation email I received said they confirm my request, and I would hear from the B&B with a confirmation of my reservation. April 1, I still didn't hear, so I emailed them, and didn't get a response. April 2 I called and was told the room had to be renovated, was not available, and I was on their list to call back. They also told me that even though they failed to give me the room requested and never contacted me, that they wouldn't give me the same price. However, they said they would call me back with options and they could probably give me some kind of break on the available rooms.

They never called back. April 6, I call again, now only 11 days from my trip, and the same guy tells me all he has are deluxe rooms at $199/night. He tells me that the renovations were an emergency and I was on his list to call today.

I understand stuff happens, but when the room you offer isn't available, then you offer an alternative, even if you lose money on it -that's how customer service works.  At the least, you offer a discount or the same rate on another weekend once the renovations are complete. And you don't fail to call the customer relying on that room. You call them that day-that is your priority. You don't wait 6 days for the customer to call you. And then when the customer calls you, you don't tell them you'll call them back and not do it. You don't make the customer call you 4 days later and then feed them the same line twice, "you were on my list to call today."

This business is terrible. I don't care how nice their B&B is. You do not give people like this your business.

If you're looking for a romantic getaway, consider St. Augustine and Castle Garden.  It is a very beautiful and old carriage house converted into a bed & breakfast.  There are only a few rooms and they differ in size and amenities.  Ours had a jacuzzi!

If you are expecting a Marriott experience (or points), look elsewhere.  Staying here is like jumping on a time machine and going back 100 years (except for the jacuzzi, which triggers a Christopher Reeve / Somewhere in Time flash forward type feeling).

Castle Garden is located right in the middle of the action, just a block away from Ripley's and a shuttle stop for the St. Augustine city tours.  Yet it's set back into a small road where you don't feel encroachment from civilization.

We saw a lot of very nice bed & breakfasts all over St. Augustine but I can't vouch for any of them because I've never stayed there.  Castle Garden however I've been twice to and am looking forward to going again.  It's as good as it gets!
