Noisy air conditioner

Good location. Free cookies at the front desk. Friendly staff. Seems like everything other than the bedrooms are updated. It felt very clean, and I would come again if I was heading to Duke Hospital.

This is based on a weekend stay earlier this month.

Location: Very close to both Duke University's west campus and the hospital there.  The neighborhood seemed safe enough, though a bit out of the way of restaurants and the like (though the hotel runs a shuttle and there's a free bus service to downtown Durham on all days except Sunday).

Service: Very friendly, even when I padded down in the middle of the night in need of a toothbrush.

Room quality: Decent enough.  The one problem I had was that there was a good amount of noise.  This came both from the street (which may have been just because I was there over Homecoming weekend) and from a very noisy air conditioner/fan in the room.

The hotel had a rather dodgy policy of automatically charging you $1 a night for the safe in your room, with the option of deducting it if you asked at checkout.

We were delightfully surprised with the Brookwood Inn at Duke and would highly recommend it! We came for the Duke graduation (a really busy time) , arriving a couple of days early to help our daughter pack. It was quiet and clean, nicely furnished, with a cafe. We stayed in the main building in a refurbished room. The view isn't the greatest, but we were not there for that. There isn't a pool.

The staff were friendly, helpful and professional. We had a car, so did not use the shuttle. Lots of parking and easy to get to. And, you can catch the Duke Campus shuttle at the Duke Hospital, which is very close by.

We travel stateside and internationally,
for business and pleasure. This hotel is a gem!

Majority of the staff is friendly especially Mrs. Lisa.  Two of the shuttle drivers made us feel welcomed and helped us enter/depart from the shuttle.  Local restaurants were suggested and we were welcome to have the shuttle take us where we please.   Very short walking distance from the Duke University Medical Center and VA hospital.
I study fashion and to be the hotel was pretty updated to be an older hotel.  I remember staying here at least 12 years whole visiting my grandma at Duke.  The diner has delicious breakfast.  Get the two eggs special with sausage, grits, and a pancake! Great deal under $7 (with water).
The rooms are comfortable, good amount of channels, roomy bathroom. Our first room didn't have a fan in the bathroom and lacked a light in the center of the room.
I seemed to be the only person with wifi issues in both rooms.  I was able to have a steady connection in the computer lab downstairs.  Check out the fitness center next door.

If you need a bed, this place is ok for it.  It's old and clean enough but the place is worth about 30-50 a night.  Unfortunately, it costs close to 80-90 a night because it's a block away from Duke Hospital.

Rough looking people the night I was there.  If you can afford to drive a mile or so to Hilton or another hotel, you'll probably be more comfortable for similar money.

This hotel is very basic, and ok.  I wouldn't stay here again unless I was in town for something related the Duke University, which was right next to the hotel.

The staff was also really nice and the hotel does pass out free chocolate chips to its guests.  The only thing I would fix is the rooms, which are a bit dated.

We can down here for a duke men's game.  I really liked it here.

Pros:
We left PA around 11:00 p.m. because of bad weather coming, they let us check in at 6:30 a.m. with no extra charge.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Our room was clean and nicely set up
We went to a game on Sunday night,  it said the shuttle didn't run on sundays, but when we went down to ask about calling a taxi, the women at the first desk said the shuttle will be right back and it will take and pick you up.
The shuttle driver was so nice. He told us history about Duke and Durham on our way to the game. When he came and got us he asked us about the game, if we had fun, etc.
Walking distance to places to eat and also to Duke University.

My only con is that when we checked in on sunday morning at 6:30 a.m. we drove all night and we were so tired. So when we went in and passed out you could hear the house keeping staff talking very loud. My husband slept through, but me I'm a light sleeper so I could hear them knocking, yelling house keeping,  talking to each other. But you hear that in every hotel, just thought some of the talks could have happened somewhere else.

I would come back here and stay every time I come back down. I enjoyed it. I've paid a lot more to stay at other hotels that are no where near this nice!

Smoking section is located next to front door, so you have to walk through a curtain of smoke before entering the building and the smell is also in the lobby.  Clerk was rude and told me that my reservation did not include breakfast.  When I tried to show her my confirmation, she said, "that's not our site".  She said I probably clicked the wrong button.  Later that night she told me that my reservation did include breakfast but I had mumbled when I told her my name, so she didn't have the right info.  I guess the drivers license and credit card that I gave her were also wrong.  Would not stay there again.

A notch below Holiday Inn in terms of quality, but considering the price differential, Brookwood Inn is a much, much better deal. Clean and comfortable rooms with free Wi-Fi and friendly van drivers who will take you or pick you up from anywhere within a 3 mi radius for free (but be sure to bring cash for tips). I stayed here very briefly while recovering from a foot procedure that I had done at Duke, and the van drivers were very proactive about helping me in and out of the van and lifting heavy bags and luggage for me. They're also very helpful to guests on wheelchairs or walkers, which makes it entirely feasible to stay around Duke Hospital for outpatient treatment without having a car. The maids and maintenance staff were also very friendly and accommodating. Bottom line is that while the rooms were okay, I'd give the hotel 5 stars for the quality of their service.

In response to the user who commented that most of the guests at the hotel looked "rough," that's because almost all their patrons are people receiving outpatient care or surgery at Duke Hospital. Which brings me to my next point. If you're staying for medical reasons, ask for the medical rate.
