i have not stayed the night in any of the rooms, but i have gambled here. i am giving this place 5 stars because they have late night food available. also i really enjoyed gambling here... i did not win but the pit boss joe was awesome... he is 70 somthin and full of great stories.. he is friendly with everyone and he has been in like 14 mafia casion movies... if you have seen some of them you might reconize him, we did. thats a great pit boss even when you are loosing money you are having fun at his tables. he deserves a raise for having a great personality unlike most stuck up seriouse guys.

Luis M. stole my thunder. The hot dog and draft deal in the Sportsbook is off the charts! There's a guy that is serving up this deal that seems to be there every year I go...He looks pissed off at the world but that's alright by me..just keep the dogs and brew coming. Sam Adams and Heini are your choices. The dogs are pretty good too..like a cosco dog. Deal of the century!!!!

I have to tell you, for a Hotel, she is Old, and Tired.  She could use a little "Touch up and a Little paint".  But for fun and a Casino, the Old Girl knows what she is doing!!!  We got to the Hotel, after an all nighter from Montana, and they let us check in early.  When they gave us the rates, (They like visitors from Alaska), I almost passed out, and Jenn had been up so long, she goofed it.  I gave the desk clerk my Card, and she said 9.95 a night, Friday 50.00, Saturday 50.00.  We checked in on a Monday.  Jenn thought they had said 99.95 a night and wanted to leave. After getting it straight we went to the room.  It was clean, Old, not a bad view.  The housekeeping staff was great, and all you really need is a place to crash, when in Reno, and we had it!  The Casino here at Cal-Neva has always been good to us.  You gamble, (use your points card), turn in your card, get a voucher free foods at the coffee shop, or other two places, then go out for more fun!  The Steakhouse is good, and the Pasta Place is very filling.  Do you want some fun?  Down on the Main floor of the Main building is a Snack Stand.  Try one of the Hot Dogs at 2 in the morning...nothing like it!!!  Don't expect the Hilton, and you will be fine!!!

this place has terrible ventilation, even standing in there for 5 min and leaving will make you reek of cigs.  but who the hell cares! it's funnnnn!!!

but i can't hate on this place.  this is home of the $2 craps. and this is the place where i learned how to play when i turned 21, how to bet, how to yell, how to make $$$$! the crap tables are always full and i always have to squeeze myself in. it is waaaay worth it. so if you feel like just throwing some dice with some regular ass people. if you're looking for a good cheap time, come play here!  maybe i'll see ya at the craps table ; )

the tacos are goood here too!

OK i have to admit the prices on the food are unbeatable  and good quality but everything else was bad, first time i ever experienced a bar in NV with rules on buying drinks . Then the attitudes that we came across from the casino employees made me never want to go back again.

About the least expensive place to stay in Reno. Frayed around the edges, but the bedding and bathroom linen were clean and well maintained. If you want upscale - pay for it. If you want just a clean place to sleep, try this place. As others have noted, the parking is a problem. The hotel [where the rooms are] is in a separate building across the street from the casino. There are two parking garages, one is two blocks away. The parking garages are free.

I hope they never change this place - the narrow, slow escalators; the tiny bus station type snack bar; the cramped crowded slot rows - but especially not the second floor: end-to-end the most fantastic remaining casino area on the West coast. The huge bar area next to the sportsbook is the best place on the planet for people watching and cheap drinks. The sporsbook itself is unassuming, straightforward fun. Their poker room is always active and welcoming, full of old rocks - or it was a couple of years ago anyway. The dealers always laugh their heads off when tourists win a hand, and they can offer great recommendation for places to eat in town.

So tacky, yet so fun.  They have different levels and another casino across the alley.  The food was cheap, they have something like a hot dog and beer for like $2 or 2 tacos and beer for like $2.50 or something in their Sports Book.  I can tell it's a trashy, local hang out.  But I had so much fun!  My boyfriend and I couldn't get off the crap tables.  They're always full, and they have like a $3 minimum most of the time.

3/17/08 UPDATE
So my boyfriend and I actually stayed at the hotel this time.  The hotel is not attached to the casino, it's actually across the street.  No, not attached by a skyway.  But you have to physically cross the street to get to the casino.

I had a terrible time with the person taking the reservation.  Her name is Norma, and she is a supervisor there.  She was a total bitch from the moment she answered the phone.  I asked her for a refrigerator in the room, and offered to pay extra.  She asked why do I need a fridge...wtf?  What the eff else do I need one for?  Don't ask me why I need a fridge!  I told her for my water, she said flat out no.  Then I said, what, do you not offer your guests refrigerators?  She said they do, but in the upgraded rooms in the highest floors of the Nevadan tower.  I asked for an upgrade.  She said no again, stating that there is only one room left and she wasn't giving it to me.

I was LIVID.  But I kept reservation, and told her that I will be there on Friday by 6PM.  Well, we got caught in a snowstorm in the Sierras by Donner Pass and ended up stuck on the highway for 3 and half hours.  By 8PM, I was nervous that they might give away my room, so I called to let Cal-Neva know that I probably won't be there until after 11PM.  Guess who answered the phone?  Norma, in all her bitchiness.  I told her I was coming in late, she was rude.  I told her I wanted to change the credit card that I made the reservation with, she accused me of giving her a "no good" credit card.  Effin bitch.  Then she reminded me that she will defintley NOT put a fridge in my room.  That was it.  I didn't want to stay at Cal-Neva any more, but my boyfriend talked me into staying.

When I got there, I bitched to the lady who checked me in.  She was like, you have to wait until the manager gets here in the morning.  She was nice about it, but... I was very dissapointed.

I noticed the next morning there was a message on my room phone, but we didn't check it until Saturday night.  We found out the manager heard about my complaint, and wanted to upgrade us, however we didn't get the message in time.

The room was alright.  The beds were a bit hard, but the room was clean and comfortable.  AND those bitches put a fridge in my room.  Ha.

When we checked out, the front desk person wouldn't let us leave until the manager talked to us.  The manager came out, and apologized for the bitchiness that is Norma and that she will be dealt with.  He comped us for our next stay, in their best rooms.  I was satisfied, so I will be going back.  Now onto the casino...

The Casino Grille is the bomb!  The chefs are hilarious, and the food is dirt cheap.  I felt my arteries clog more and more with every bite of the greasy, high calorie food.  The slots were constipated, so I didn't win a damn thing.  The $3 min crap table was fun as always, but be aware after midnight the min bet changes to $5.  The bathrooms were clean, as everytime I was in them (I sprung a leak with all the vodka I was drinking), there was someone straightening it up.

Seriously, come to the Cal-Neva for cheap, tacky fun.  If you're looking for a Vegas-style hotel/casino, then don't come here.  If you don't mind old drunk men, an unattractive crowd, and want to save money, then Cal-Neva is definitley for you.

I was telling my friend Forrest about my idea for a new casino I want to open up.  My casino would focus on the comfort of my patrons, rather than the glitz and glam and gaudiness where most casinos seem to concentrate their efforts.  My casino would cool it on all the loud bells and sirens, dealers would trade in their shiny sequined tuxedoes for tshirts, and we'd cut out the gimmickry of special deals or bonuses.  My casino would avoid a grand opening--our doors would open quietly without a big rigamarole.  Our motto, "A comfortable casino you can actually trust," would cast groundless doubt upon the trustworthiness of other casinos, while inviting guests to make themselves comfortable in our casual atmosphere.  Cal Neva stole my idea about the tshirts, but I'm not mad--it makes me feel more comfortable seeing my dealer looking more comfortable.
Most of the dealers here speak with strong accents.  My man Malik, who was dealing to me at the $3 blackjack table ($3 dollar blackjack! Most places in this town have minimum $5 or even $10 blackjack tables), my man Malik had an accent unlike any I've ever heard in my life.  I could barely understand a word he said--but every word he spoke was delivered with a sly grin and twinkle in his eye that made it a joy to lose my money to him.
Upstairs they have a pasta restaurant with very affortable prices.  Downstairs, an affordable grill with a hardworking cook with great sports betting tips.
I forgot to mention my other idea for my casino.  We have this policy where if you print out your bank statement from the atm machine and it say you have a zero balance and you bring it to the cashier and hand over the shirt off your back, we will give you a $25 chip and a free tshirt that says "I lost my shirt at (whatever I decide to name my casino) Casino."

Props to Anne Marie... how right you are. $3 blackjact , dog + draft, the most old-scool style, no frills casino i've been in since Binons.  This place is most excellent for a great (and not too expensive) night out in ReNO with your friends.

Recently, my BF who is from ReNO and I, from FresNO, were having a debate on the realitive merrits of both cities. I asserted that they were, in essence, the same town.. but then he said "FresNO doesn't have the Cal Neva." And I knew at that point, I had lost.

The Club Cal Neva is now Reno's WORST BET
Why? Let me inform you

Parking--- $10 to park in their garage on Aces baseball game days--They should be welcoming customers instead of fleecing them

Blackjack--Beware of all those ripoff 6-5 blackjack tables in which they are fleecing the public (normal blackjacks should pay 3-2)

Casino--Very smokey with minimal air filtration
The Best Advice--Stay away from this dump!!!!!!

If you are looking for a classic dive, then this is the perfect place for you. It's the last of the old fashioned casinos: cheap breakfast, quick drinks and low table minimums. Now that the Fitz is closed, there is nowhere else worth going to on the strip.

Aw, Cal-Neva.  Robbed me of hours and hours of my life LOL.  I like this hotel because we never have to pay for a room.  You come and gamble, become a member and they let you stay here for free.  The hotel is nothing luxurious, but for free, who is complaining?  Cheap drinks and great bloody marys.  Many good times here.  Way too much money lost to slots LOL.

Hotel used to be the Riverboat and prior to that was the Onslow. The last casino that I really enjoy going to. The rooms next to nothing or free and they are simple but relatively clean. When you walk into the casino it actually smells like a casino dirty carpet, smoke and alchol. The last thing on Virginia street worth going to . You can have all those Faux casinos.

Its not the prettiest by any stretch of the imagination but at one time this was place to be when Reno was still a legitimate desination albeit for quick divorces. A time when Frank Sinatra actually owned this place.

This place will always have a place in my heart where I first learned to play table games as a 16 old.

I love coming here to play black jack, sports room, craps and poker. Where you can spend a whole day playing the great games, and enjoy you 99 cent breakfast just to continue on playing.

This place is for playing and enjoying the dying spirit of bygone era.

If you love gambling only in the Bellagio dont bother.

This review is just for the deli by the sports book:

hot dog and a draft = $1.50
2 tacos and and a draft = $2
hot dog and heineken = $2.50
2 tacos and heineken = $3

Tell me this isn't the most useful review in Reno!

To add to the usefulness of this review, they have $3 single deck bonus blackjack.  What the F is the bonus you ask?  As if $3 single deck isn't great enough they throw in a bonus opportunity to win cashola on every re-shuffle of the cards.  You can place a bet on the dealer, yourself, of both.  If the person you bet on gets a blackjack you win and it pays $17 to $1!!!!!!!!!!!  People, you have to be a dimwit not to take that bet.  The dealer and/or yourself are sure to hit a blackjack on the reshuffle more than once every 17 re-shuffles.  You might even get the chance to have Red Dawg sit at your table to entertain you while you play!

Now how much more useful is this review???

So upset with this Hotel and Casino! I can't believe this casino would do this to dedicated patrons!  My friend has been going to this Casino for over 30 years along with members of his family, like any other casino they received comps and passes because you are a card member and pouring money into their casino.  Anyways, this year it just happens they finally had a string of luck and have been winning, but when the Casino head did a check on their past winnings they decided to just KICK THEM OUT!  My friend is in his 60's and loves to go here every weekend, he was devastated!!  They were about to begin a slot tourney and the manager said, "after reviewing your winnings, WE NO LONGER WANT YOU BUSINESS" and continued to escort him and his entire family out! WTF!!!! Even took them up to their room and had them check out in that instance!!!!! He has been going here for years and has lost thousands of dollars playing and the year he finally gets some luck they KICK THEM OUT! I dunno but I think that is a rotten deal! I think this hotel has no class and could have dealt with this differently. They lost a dedicated player who loves to go to Reno to relax and play and now this had tainted his whole outlook.  So sad.  NOT STARS!!!!

Hotel? Is there a hotel here? If they do, do they have Internet Access?

The restaurant is really cheap for the money. $5.99 for steak-eggs. They hot-dogs and Heineken or Sam Adams for $2.00.

Did not expect much from the $8.99 prime rib promo, but got even less than expected.  Just throw the single guy in the corner, ignore him,  then take forever to get coffee and order.  The meal was OK, but I ran out of coffee about halfway through and waitress was nowhere to be found.

Mentioned it to cashier on the way out and was lectured that one could not expect perfect service in just a busy place.  I was not seeking perfection, just a freaking cup of coffee so I didn't choke on the mediocre prime rib.

I used to always get free room offers from this place. Judging by the reviews, I'm glad I never gave in to the offers!

I did sign for a players card here a couple of years ago when mom and I visited. It is kind of fun to gamble in hole in the wall casinos such as this one, and the food prices are pretty decent. However the place was super smokey....Yuck! Never again.

The room was unbelieably cheap,,beds not so comfy...and the toliet ran all night long. At one point it even started spraying water all over the bathroom. haha. The best part about this place was the Egg McNeva. There is a small cafe in the casino part that serves this AMAZING breakfast sandwich. so tasty. The cook "Richard" was so nice. The only down side to this little cafe is listenting to the drunken jerks at 3:30 am.

A terrific breakfast for $4.99? That's right. My family and I were hungry (including 5 kids) and the sign made us circle back to give it a try. Boy are we glad that we did! The $4.99 steak and eggs breakfast was a real value. The steak was quite tasty and cooked as ordered, accompanied by two eggs, hashbrowns and toast. There were at least half a dozen other breakfast and lunch specials for $4.99 and dinner specials starting at $5.99. We would definitely go back again.

I'm into the tacky fun. Cal-Neva has plenty of that to offer. They've been on the main strip forever and have outlasted many other casinos that are now long gone.

The place is not as pretty inside as some of the newer places. But, it's old style Reno at it's best! They have 3 floors to gamble on here so don't just stop in at the ground level.

Second floor has a sports bar and here you can also bet on all things sports. Large clean restrooms are also located here.

The third floor boasts the only single zero Roulette tables in town. Sweet! You used to be able to play for 10 cents. Buy a stack of chips for $10 and you feel rich! I think it's 25 cent minimum now. Times do change. But, it's still cheap fun, nevertheless. I see some of the same regulars here with their notebooks charting the numbers every time I go.

What most people don't know is that they also have a smaller casino that is across the alley. Here you can find good Blackjack tables that will have that $2 or $3 minimum long after the big guys put the $5 signs out on all of theirs.

The Top Deck Restaurant is located here now and still offers food deals for Californians that you won't find advertised. Ask them about it. They used to be easier to get than they are now. It's not the Ritz-Carlton, ok. But, it's inexpensive Steak and Eggs, Prime Rib, diner style.

Good fun, cheap eats - I always make it a point to stop by here whenever I am in town. I love the Cal-Neva!

Great Value for the dollar. With the economy down and Indian casinos everywhere Reno is suffering. Club Cal Neva still working hard to provide a good deal in the old town of Reno.  A nice size well furnished room for under $30 and everything worked well in the room.  Then they have signs everywhere (except the place where you can order it) of the $4.99 steak and egg breakfast meal. Best steak I have had in awhile (except the Kobi steak had a Harrahs' for $60).  They are running the place with a skeleton size staff and the elevators are slower then Molasses in winter.  If you go know they have valet parking connected to the hotel, off Virgina St.

There is  a little 24 hr counter just next to the escalators with old school chef Don weiding the spatula and on my visit, an unusual old drunken guy telling me all about the shredded cheese in his shirt that would never in a million years cover up his giant belly. Anyway, this was the worst Phat Philly (its called) I have ever experienced. I have eaten cheesesteaks in Philly and everywhere, but when I unearthered my sandwich from its plastic box to my horror, it seemed that all the meat was just one piece that was held together with all the fat. Trust me, if you order a Philly and you don't hear the chef chopping the meat on the grill, you are in for a bad ride. Luckily I didn't get the nacho cheese sauce on top, but it didn't matter, there was more fat than meat and I'm not quite sure what kind of staek it was either. Only Ribeye should be used. Fries were partially cooked. This is the most expensive item on their menu. I did have a great spanish omlette at the Top Deck, so I suggest you just head upstairs and away from this little counter of Horrors.

My favorite casino in Reno.  I have always gone to the Cal-Neva when I am in Reno because it has a great place to dine for a little money and the gaming atmosphere is the way Reno used to be.

The atmosphere has not change in all the years I have gone there - hopefully, it will not.  This place has been a familiar sight each time I go to Reno.

The location in downtown is great because it is close to everything and the rooms are OK.  We don't stay in the rooms too often; therefore, it doesn't really matter.

The people who work there have been great to me and my family.  I can never think of a time I had a bad experience.

Silver Legacy, El Dorado, Circus Circus, and Harrah's stand out within the downtown Reno hotel/casinos, but Club Cal Neva, in my mind, is the better economic bet.

A group of friends and I decided to spend the weekend in Nevada to enjoy the fresh powdery snow. Trying to be cost effective, we decided to reserve two rooms at Club Cal Neva for about $80 or so a night per room. The other notable hotels were probably $20 more a night. Once we checked-in they automatically cut down our rate to about $60 or so a night per room. Sweet!

Its a decent place for the price, but I was kinda annoyed about going through 2 additional buildings from the parking garage structure just to get to hotel room towers.

Hells yeah!  This is no Vegas and I'm glad about that!!  I've actually won money here and came home with some of it!!!  That alone is worth 5 stars!!

While I admit it's been years since I've stepped into this Reno landmark, I'm just glad it's still here after all these years!

Plenty of slot machines, if that gets your groove on, and the cocktail waitresses are some of the fastest around and more than happy to help you get your drink on!!  WOOT!!

So for the thrifty gambler Cal-Neva is the place to go. Anywhere that does 25-50 cent roullette is a fun place in my book. I love to play roullette but I hate to lose. I gamble for fun not for sport. So whenever we are in Reno we end up at the Cal-Neva for at least a few hours, sometimes a lot of hours, and I have never lost more than $40. They have a ton of slot machines and lots of table games. The cocktail waitresses are always quick and for the most part the dealers are pretty friendly. The worst part is the fact that you leave smelling like you fell in to the deep fryer. That's part of the reason I have never tried to stay at the Cal-neva hotel. That way I can leave and go wash the stench off.

I just wanted to give a 5 star for their blackjack tables.

$3 minimum and they offer a bonus bet where you get 17 to 1 when you get a black jack on the first hand.

So you bet $1 that you will get a black jack and if you do, you get $17.

Place seems small, but clean.  I'd come here when I'm feeling like I just want to play for a long time.

Too bad I still lost all my money =(

Yuck. Seedy area. The only reason we came here was because my friend wanted to play cheap blackjack. It's there, with terrible odds. Casino is crowded and difficult to get around. It's really crappy too.

I'm a sports bettor and I rarely bet Cal Neva odds in Vegas, as they're fairly sharp. I came here because I wanted to bet English Soccer at 3am, and they're the only book open 24 hours in Reno. The sports book was like Palace Station, they did not have an electronic board, odds weren't updated, and the place was cheap and uncomfortable.

We walked outside and there was a homeless guy with a shopping cart. He pulled a weapon out of his shopping cart and walked towards our group, unprovoked. Never looked at the guy or said a word to him. Downtown is not a safe area at night.

I come here just for the phat philly with fries. the #7. its $7.25 and for two dollars more you can upgrade to a 24 oz. bud light. not a bad deal but what's even better is how amazing it is. it's the kind that takes ten mins to order and five more to make. plain bun, cheese wiz, provolone, freshly cooked steak, green and red peppers and onions topped again with cheese wiz. it falls apart the minute you pick it up. my whole hand is covered in cheese and it takes ten napkins to clean me up. amazingly good Philly. :)

I went there to stay here and the prices were not bad at all.  I got two free comentary breakfasts and I only needed one really. But the breakfasts were only I got hash browns, bacon, two eggs and toast.  They get three stars because the people at the Black Jack table and the dealers were somewhat rude to me. There were some nice ones, but the Asian ones were sort of mean because I did not know the inns and outs of their blackjack.  I am use to the regular sings in Blackjack.  One thing they got annoyed was that I did not put the chips under the cards properly and threatened to spank me if I did it again. I mean I guess they are paranoid that I would be cheating.   So I ended up taking my $9 win and getting out instead of just staying there.

As for staying there, it was okay, I guess what you pay is what you get. I paid $39 dollars with taxes. The maid service came knocking on my door at 8:30am and yelled at me for not putting up the sign argh argh argh.

When I walked out the door, I did not understand her accent and she was quite rude because I thought she said how are you doing?  As for me I did fine and she said no no no, and I told her I was out of the room and she can clean it. Anyways she was being a b*tch.  But you can not win them all.  But I go back because you can not beat the $3 blackjack.

So you're visiting "The Biggest Little City In The World", but which hotel could you consider staying @ in Reno, Nevada? Well BF & I made our selection just as other fellow Yelpers...primarily based on price, then location...try out Club Cal Neva (short for Nevada) Hotel & Casino! clubcalneva.com

LOCATION: Club Cal Neva Hotel & Casino are NOT in the same bldg, rather across the street from each other yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ… Hotel entrance is on Virgina St btw First & Second St. Garage Parking Lot (free) is on other side of casino, on Center St; or u could also opt for their free Valet Parking & just tip driver. If you opt to parking garage like us, round up your luggage & walk through the TWO casino bldgs (yes, U should go through 4 doors)...once outside of casino & on Virginia St, cross the street into hotel; tatt parlor next door. Overall location is just walking distance to other major hotels on Reno's Virginia Street Strip like El Dorado, Circus Circus, & Harrahs (Starbucks 2nd level *tee-hee*).

CUST SVC: Polite, efficient, & good. Helpful & informative via-phone w/ room reservations few mths in advance, & still same mannerism received from fellow employees upon check-in, check-out, questions/requests from front desk & housekeeping during our stay.

HOTEL: We booked our Standard King Non-Smoking Room yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ… in July '09 for Sept '09 stay; yes it's always better to book early if u can to get better rates especially if traveling during holidays like us for Labor Day Weekend in Sparks, NV for Nugget Rib Cook-off. Wi-Fi not free, but available for $8.95/24hr access; payment via-credit card upon online setup...else enjoy the TV yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ… Decent 1-sink bthrm size yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ… & shower/toilet room yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ… Shower/Toilet Room has a door to close it off from sink area; quaint size all around, handicap accessible, & roomy for 2 people to move around each other in...although shower is 1-person deal...there's no room for any coupling in here folks. Our stay was on the 10th floor w/ a decent view as well yelp.com/biz_photos/bbQZ…

CHECK-OUT: Final tab for 3days/2nights (Fri-Sun) was about $160 ($143+tax). BF & I checked out @ front desk, then I waited in lobby area w/ our luggage while he went to parking garage to get our vehicle. There's room in front of hotel for loading/unloading. Would we come back? We'd consider it...our stay wasn't bad really. Glad we know our way around now tho =)

MJ's SUGGESTIONS: Mini-fridge only comes in deluxe rooms; my suggestion is to buy a $4 styrofoam cooler from Safeway (freezer section on top), bring on ur trip, get ice from hotel vending machine, then pack any beverages u like in cooler. Yes, the hotel provides plastic container for u to collect ice, but the ice melts eventually...styrofoam cooler keeps the ice as cubes muuuuch longer ;-) Or, when u make ur RSVP for Standard Room & inquire for a fridge, when the employee ask "What do you need the fridge for? Is it for medical reason?" (I WAS in awe the question was even asked upon my request & thought afterwards would we have gotten it if I answered "Yes")....go ahead & just say yes...I'll look fwd to ur review on how it turned out *tee-hee*

Well, let me caveat this by stating our total bill for one night's lodging, including breakfast for two: $27.24.

This place is a total dive, even given the standards of the downtown environment. You have to cross the street to get to the rooms from the two-part casino and parking garage, so I can see how people could get lost really quick. The smoke is fairly intense in the common areas.

But the room is blissfully free of the vapors. The two queen beds have plenty of oomph, and the floor is fairly quiet. You can see out at the surrounding mountains and river. I like the location, where you can walk to Silver Legacy, the riverwalk, and nearby restaurant gems like Sup and Silver Dollar Inn.

The free breakfast is fairly standard - plentiful, nothing gourmet, but also freshly cooked to order. I think I even won a few dollars at the tables, which have the lowest minimum in the downtown area.

Room is spacious and tidy.  The hotel portion is separate from the casino (just across the street).  I like the room because it is decent and clean.  For the price we paid to stay there ($112 including tax), the overall value isn't too bad.  However, noise insulation is poor.  If somebody turned on the faucet or took a shower in the middle of the night, then one is basically screwed because I found it almost impossible to fall asleep when the neighboring room's faucet is turned on.  And with that said, I didn't have a great night sleep.

We ate at the Steak & Pasta House which had a steak and lobster special for only $14 per person. The price pretty much tells you what it was like. It wasn't bad, but certainly wasn't very good either. The atmosphere verges on seedy, but the servers in their very casual attire were very friendly and helpful. We are glad that we gave it a try, but we won't be going back again.

I can't say enough good stuff about the Cal Neva. If you can get in on a room deal, then go for it. It's not upscale, it's downright shabby. But it's clean, the staff are outstanding, and if you find a deal, the stay is reasonable. The little greasy spoon downstairs has the best breakfast sandwich, the "Egg McNeva". I'd rock those all day long if I could eat that many. The slots are nothing to write home about, I've been staying at the Cal Neva at least once a year for the last 10 years and have lost my a$$ every time.
The staff and the greasy food make this place. I love it. Oh, and put in some freekin' wifi!

This is where to go for "Old Reno" atmosphere and pricing, downtown where things are happening. If you want shiny and new, go drop $90 across the street.

$24 weeknights for a nice, clean, comfortable room.  Some rooms have a nice view of the valley and/or Truckee River.

The $3.99 steak and eggs special is available 24 hours a day, and I've had it twice.  Once it was great, the other time there was a lot of fat and gristle, so you take your chance -- but it's served with toast (get the sourdough!) and hashbrowns, and was worth the price both times.

If you want a nice midweek vacation from California, ride Amtrak from Sacramento to Reno -- one of the two most scenic stretches of rail in the country (along with Colorado), walk 2 blocks to Cal-Neva, then take the train back down.

7 for value

I love Reno and when I come I wont stay anywhere else. It is located in the middle of the strip which is very convenient. They have an attentive staff and the room prices cannot be beat. We have Cal Neva club cards and get ever better deals on top of the ones they already have! The rooms are just typical, nothing special. The rooms are clean and a decent size. But who spends the whole time in your room when you are in Reno? It is a place to poor into bed at dawn. LOL. My last visit I got three nights free and that was no gimmick. 100% free. No taxes, no hidden fees nothing. Their valet promptly parked our car and they had a bell boy who helped us with our bags which I thought I was very nice and unexpected because it is not a fancy place. The casino is great too. Roulette is my game and they offer 25 and 50 cent chips! Cheapest tables in Reno. Some of the dealers are really nice and friendly but there is a couple of them that need to find another job because they are not cut out for any job that involves people. If you're gonna take my money be nice. The casino is also very dark and the smoke can be overwhelming if you are not used to it. But hey, I expect that from a casino. My husband and I went to the other casinos but they are not the same. I love this place but it is not as high class as the other hotels and casinos on the strip but I like the fact that is just average. They sent another club offer for three more free nights in May. Any night. Tempting. Karaoke in the casino is deafening! Drunk people who think they sing is quite entertaining. I recommend this place if you are looking for cheap decent place to stay then I would say stay here. Oh and get a club card! You can get free food, free rooms, etc.

I've stayed at the Grand Sierra Resort, Peppermill, and Silver Legacy while in Reno over the years.  I thought I'd stay at Club Cal Neva to see what all the great Yelp reviews were about.

This is a no frills place to stay.  There is a coffee pot in the bathroom and free cable (that had great access compared to Grand Sierra's limited cable).  You have to pay for internet, but I brought my own tethered internet.

The parking garage is a pain to walk from to get to the hotel, it is across the street from the hotel through the casino.  So bring luggage on wheels or get dropped off at the front of the casino with your stuff and have someone else park for you.

If you're on a budget and just need a place to stay in Reno, I'd suggest this place, but don't expect an updated hotel.  It is just the basics to get you by. You'll probably want to spend your time outside the hotel during your stay.  I blew my $40 limit on the slots and was stuck in the room for the rest of my trip overnight so the cable tv was much appreciated.

i absolutely love this restaurant! so much history here...i used to go to reno every weekend from sf to ski, and this would always be THE restaurant to hit up. they're always very friendly and the low lighting has a home feeling to it. they have the constant keno games like most places in reno, and their food is sooooo good!

i think late march or early april, they do a retro thing because it's their opening anniversary. they serve you food prices from back in the 50s-60s! i remember gettin a fat slab of rare prime rib for 3.50! it was amazing..i hope they still do that.

it's a definite hit and go-to in my book and anyone roamin across the biggest little city needs to go Club Cal Neva!

I love this place!!!!

My boyfriend and I come up here every couple months.

We love the low bet $3 blackjack tables.  I have had good luck on the slots & craps too!

on the first deal after a shuffle, you can place a dollar bet on two things that pay 17 to 1.  First, if you get a blackjack, and second if the dealer gets one!  It is SO WORTH IT! even if you win 1/17 times, you break even.

they also have royal match bet.

You have to jam upstairs to use the restroom, which is the only part that sucks.  I like to drink.

I love the tacky old vibe.  Most of the dealers are great.

The room is AWESOME for the price.  I think i spent around $30 for the room. The room was great!  I had recently stayed at the el dorado (20 steps up the street & $70 room a night), and they were around the same quality.

CAL NEVA I LOVE YOU!

I've been coming here since I was 5 years old. Not to gamble, obviously.

Being Chinese, my parents love love love to gamble, ergo, gambling is in my blood.

Since I was five, every year, we have always gone to Reno once, twice, even four times a year. For me, Circus Circus was fun at first but by the time i was six, I grew bored of CC - those stuffed animals just didn't faze me.

I've always like the casino. The flashing lights, the crisp cards, the poker sunglasses (ok that's just me), the free drinks-- but I found myself, often sad, often alone, and often on the "red line." What's the red line you ask?  The red line is where the minors have to stand, away from the action - away from the tables - away from the slot machines. I had to stand on the red line - not a second over 5 minutes - while standing on my tip toes trying to see if my mom was winning at the blackjack table. I hated the red line. I used to imagine that I was in my glittery flapper dress, smoking a cigarette, drinking a scotch while playing at the table.

Well, I eventually did that (minus the dress, cigarette and the scotch). That five year old girl grew up. This past month, I went to Cal Neva and played pai gow poker - possibly my favorite card game. It was amazing being at the table, winning - getting a four of a kind within 5 minutes of sitting down, and drinking with my folks.

I love Cal Neva - they have great dealers, the facilities are clean, and their karaoke nights are off the chain. I love Cal Neva even more now that I will never ever have to stand on the red line.

If you are a Chinese reader - please please please don't take your kids to Reno casinos. Would you sit a fat kid in front of a big chocolate cake and tell him he can't eat it?

Alright let's go for a really helpful review, shall we? :-)

For one thing, it seems that Cal Neva has the oldest slot machines in all of Reno.  I don't think you come here to play the machines though.

Cal Neva is more geared towards sports fans and table games.  They generally have lower limit games with $3 blackjack tables that pay even money if you bet very little and you hit a blackjack.  The sports book is huge!  I especially like the sports book specials which range from cheap hot dogs, beers and tacos!  This sports book is also the most fair when it comes to sports betting.  For example, in football betting, 3 teams correct in the Parlay Cards wins you $6.75 to 1, as opposed to the other Casino's $6 to 1.

I must also mention the cheap eats in this casino!  When I was little, this place used to have the famous $0.99 Ham and Egg breakfast!  These days I believe it's $2.99, but the Top Deck Coffee shop (3rd floor) still has great lunch and dinner specials!

The hotel rooms are what you expect from any other Reno Hotel.  Some basic and not so comfortable mattress and an older room thousands of other people have used.

Three-doller tables are where it's at.  A really cool, laid back vibe at Cal Neva as compared to the hustle and bustle of Circus Circus, The Nugget, or Grand Sierra.  A ton of penny and nickel slots upstairs for long-haul boozing on the cheap, good restaurants, polite waitstaff... they even have an arcade area above the casino floor.  I have a feeling that Cal Neva will be high in the rotation from here on out.

Between the Virginian and Cal-Neva you can stay inside on a cold/hot day and gamble for quiet a while on a little bit AND have cheap food. They are older casinos so they are a little outdated but that actually adds to their charm. I have not stayed in the hotel so I can't comment on those but I have never had any problems with the staff, service, or games erroring out. I will give them a 3 star rating until I win the next big jackpot from them then I'll chance it to 5 stars...lol.

Not sure if I would ever stay in the hotel, but I totally love the casino.  How can you beat $3 blackjack tables?  I walked in on a Sunday afternoon and ambiance was really chill - upon first glance, it definitely gives off that cheese vibe, but the dealers, cocktail waitresses, and other casino staff are super friendly and make you feel really comfortable.  No pressure like in Vegas, which is great when you're slightly inebriated by the free booze (can you say Bud Light Platnum?) and can't add properly.

No frills, cheap casino. That said, it's pretty awesome.

The Good :)
-$3 blackjack tables - on weekends!
-beer pong tournaments in the sports bar in which the winning team takes home $500 (and maybe some alka seltzer on the way home)
-25-cent electronic darts (you just have to give a refundable deposit to the bartender for the darts)
-Free ping pong
-Good, cheap food...not saying it's good FOR you
-People watching like you wouldn't believe. We're not talking people watching like at some chic LA nightclub, either.

The Bad :/
-A guy at the cashier booth who was about 500, pressed one button on the keyboard at a time, then had to look at the screen to see what he pressed. C'mon! I just want to cash out my $5 jackpot!
-the smell of an old casino, but then again, you probably know what you're getting yourself into.

This review is about the hotel.  AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! Even the $29.00 special!

I can't believe that this HOLE has an overall three and a half stars.  People must have very low expectations of their hotel stay in Reno.  Either that or they like (or they are!!) having toothless tweekers and junkies in the room next door.  Fuck this place.  The staff was rude and unhelpful.  Filthy place.  And finally, they have big signs saying FREE WIFI.  Liars!!!  No WIFI.  When I asked about it they didn't know what to do at the front desk.  They kept telling me that I was doing it wrong, again very rudely.  Finally the IT guy got in touch with me (He at least seemed a decent guy; courteous and really wanted to help.  He wasn't even working and called me from his home.) But to no avail.  An no option to even pay for it.  I have previously stayed at either the Sands, Fitzgeralds, or Harrah's, where rooms are cheap ($27.00-$40.00 on weekday), clean and the staff, if not super courteous, at least tolerable.  But they charge at least $10.00 for room internet.  I should have stuck with that.  Harrah's is clean, modern (in comparison) and the WIFI signal is good.

At Cal Neva, the room was really dingy andther was hair in the bathroom!!  Also, it was supposedly a Non-Smoking room, but because they were apparently out of Smoking rooms, smokers were smoking in the Non-Smoking ones.  I was choking to death!!  It says something about the place when there are more smokers in the hotel than non-smokers, I think.  And I'm not saying that as a snob, but as a former smoker, it is a fact that, like alchol and other addictive substances, tobacco addicts tend to be indicative of social or emotional problems.  Believe me, I've worked through some shit to give up this deadly habit.  And of course it is also indicative of the socio-economic conditions of the people; ie: tweekers, et al.  Anyway, I finally complained enough to the management and they, quite reluctantly gave me an "up grade" to a higher floor.  Here the room was cleaner, yes.  But smaller and older, if that can be believed!  But is was quieter, too and the view was better.  But again the WIFI did not work.  I finally gave up on bugging them about it.

Now, I chose to go the Cal Neva soley based on the free in ternet.  And I figured that the place can't be that bad (hell, yelp people said it was old-school but clean and a nice place to hang).  But it WAS THAT BAD.  Do yourself a favor and go to Harrah's instead.  It is clean, centrally located, friendly, and even though you have to pay for WIFI, AT LEAST IT WORKS!!!!!!  Even better, go to Circus Circus where it is a little more expensive, but excellent service, cleanliness and it is one of the only unionized hotels in Reno.

This sportsbook is freeeeegin awesome. It does have that old look to it though. Like the owner decided not to update it. Sportsbook here though beats any other sportsbook casinos on this strip. Great for watching football, eating wings, beer pong. Don't know how slots and card tables go here, as I never tried it, but I'd probably feel more comfortable playing slots or card at another casino. This hotel casino is strickly known for it's sportsbook and sports stuff!

Come here if you love sports, beer, and some wings! I sure will be back for more sports action!

Oh Club Cal Neva, what can I say about you...

From the upfront, you should know this place is a dump, and its that way on purpose. If I want somewhere upscale or uppity, I don't go here. I go to the Cal Neva when I want dirty, gritty, strange times with very interesting people carrying plenty of interesting aromas.

Cal Neva has everything. And I do mean everything.
- Singing paranoid schizophrenic patients railing on and on about how "Larry Bird has nipples the size of dinner plates!"
- Octogenarians down at the karaoke pit stomp dancing with their canes, then falling down, ripping open an arm on one of the ever safe seats around the pit, and then jumping up to dance more and bleed all over.
- Recent stroke victims busting out heart felt renditions of "You give love a bad name" up on the karaoke stage.
- Interesting aromas and salt of the earth weirdos.

If you're not from Reno, you'll never understand the draw of this place. Its cheap, its greasy, its full of a never ending circus. If you're not in the mood for that, go to the Peppermill or the Atlantis.

Oh yea, and where else can you get the people around you in the sports book to "Tebow" with you? Only at the Cal Neva...

The casino floor and the overall atmosphere is the real life embodiment of the casino in National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation. There is no ventilation so the smoke really gets to you, and I'm a casino smoker. The walla are painted black and the lights are permanently set  to the lowest possible light source before being shut off. The VIP service table basically told me off when I asked them a question and I fairly sure the average age of everyone in there is 102, but it does have some good points.

If you're a sports nut and always wake up early for proper European football matches, they have them all (only place in Reno that does). If you like cheap beer, sign up for their slot card  program and 16oz bud or bud light are only $1 all the time. If you like seeing people that are so utterly depressing, you feel better about yourself, just count the roll along oxygen tanks.

Come on: $3 BJ minimums that pay 3 to 2 blackjacks and 2 to 1 insurance?? On the Reno "strip"? As one yelper below me said: "it's easier to win here". As a corollary, I'd like to say that even if you don't win, your money goes farther.

These dealers have the best job: their clients aren't losing an insane amount of money, and the low minimums and price for drinks keep people there longer. They're bubbly and great, with great personality, even the ones that seem stiff and like there may be trouble at home.

A nice down-home place to lose money at a slower rate, eat and drink for ultra cheap, and it's only 2 blocks away from the pizazz, if I may, of Circus Circus and Silver Legacy. You want your best chances of winning? CAL NEVA it.

What a dump! The parking garage is the first part of this colossal wasteland that you encounter. Its dirty, trash floating around, and desperately in need of a fresh coat of paint. But then waiting for what seemed like forever with 2 different groups of people hitting the button for the elevator you notice all the graffiti etched in to the metal doors and signage. Once inside things don't improve much. Its dark and doesn't exactly give you a good feeling.

We met up with a friend there, it was their first time there as well. They wanted to sing karaoke. Cal Neva happened to have Friday night karaoke. The people singing were really pretty good. But the worn out elbow padding at the bar just creeped me out. I couldn't stop thinking of all the nasties that were living inside its worn out pleather and exposed drink soaked padding.

The place just screams beat down 80's hairband fall out.

The bartender was nice, but not exactly attentive unless you had boobs and flirted with him. The drinks were TINY and tasted like CRAP. We left pretty quickly.

Nice low limits for all of their tables and their tables are open 24/7 unlike the larger casinos. If there's a game you want to play, they'll open one up for you if you ask. The dealers are all fairly nice and the pit bosses are pretty cool. Ended up playing craps for like 6-7 hours and they gave my entire group comps even though we took alot of money from them.

The interior is a little run down and ventilation isn't so great but then again most of Reno is like this.

They have cheap all breakfast spots that are opened 24/7 unless you catch them during cleaning time.

All in all I'd go back if I had the chance. If you're a craps player this is the best spot to play on the Reno strip, it has the lowest minimums and if you bet $3 minimum on pass line and the point is 4/10, they'll let you round up to $10 to max out odds instead of $9. Not a huge deal but it's a nice convenience and advantageous to the player.

It's $3-5 minimum and 3X/4X/5X max odds all day, the minimums are lower here than the other casinos but the max odds are about the same. At other places you can sometimes find $5 but it's only during dead times at least peak times $10+ is standard at the other casinos.

Haven't stayed here yet, but I give 5 stars to the casino itself and the eateries inside Cal Neva. This is the only casino in the area where $1 will last for several hours in a penny slot and where I can turn that $1 into $5. The minimum bets at $3 for craps (and occasionally $1) make it easy for the beginner gambler who wants to learn the game and have fun without losing a ton of money. Be sure to take advantage of the 24 oz $1 Budweiser cans and tip the servers well. Very nice people working here and also nice locals as well.

I didn't stay at the hotel so I can't speak for that but the experience I had at the casino was great! All the dealers I played with were really fun and down to earth.  I felt like I was just hanging out with them while I played. Specifically katana, Ryan, and Jill made my experience here a great one and made me wanna stay and play even longer. I will definitely go back next time I find myself in Reno!

No doubt this place is seedy and definitely does attract all the colorful characters you read about in the reviews.  This is not a classy joint, but it also isn't trying to be.  Some of the reviews I read below are just ridiculous.  It's like they're complaining that they don't serve filet mignon and McDonalds!  Ok, now that I've got my rant out of the way, I'll tell you why I DO like about The Neva:.

FRIENDLY staff.  If you sit at the bar and put a little money in, you're getting comped drinks.  Period.  No attitude, no glancing at how much you're wagering.  Nothing.  Just your drink and a smile.  This place puts itself out there as a "regular Joe's" casino and they definitely walk the walk on that front.

Good low end poker.  You wanna play $10 texas holdem tourneys three times a day?  You got it.  They also try to spread a $1/2 no limit game, but that doesn't always get going.  Fun place to learn for newer players or to blow of some steam after a bad run in the bigger games for you more experienced hands.

If you're not into gambling, drinks are super super cheap here anyway (a big group next to use ordered 10 beers, a double cocktail and a glass of wine and their bill was $18!  They've also got beer pong upstairs.

Hotel is definitely not so nice, but if you live outside town and have a few too many, it's a decent option.  The rooms are clean but definitely run down, and dated.  Comfy bed at least.  Furthermore, our room was comped basically just cuz we asked a manager.  So.... that was pretty sweet.

Lots of different cheap activities and a serious slice of life for downtown Reno... as long as you know what you're in for, you'll have a great time.  If you want classy atmosphere and big attitude go somewhere else...or better yet, go to Vegas.  Who are we kidding?  This IS Reno after all.

By far the WORST hotel experience I've ever had in my life! I had booked a room there at a cheap rate over the weekend for the Santa Crawl.  Upon checking in, the Asian women working the front was the rudest, most obnoxious, and unhelpful person I've ever had to deal with.  Simple questions I had asked the women were deferred and rude responses were distributed. This women was either too lazy or lacked the intelligence to help me. I believe it was a good combination of both.  Next, Upon my arrival of my "non smoking room," I encountered that it had smelled as if a cigar humidor had lite on fire.  The room was also dirty and had garbage lying around from the previous customer.  I would recommend visitors of Reno to run from this establishment! Comedy Central's hit T.V. show, Reno 911, comes to a reality in this dive.

I booked for the crawl also. The asian lady was SO RUDE!! And I had to have a major credit card to check-in. No Debt card allowed. WTF. Never had that problem in any other hotel in Reno or Sparks.  I left my MCC at home in East Sparks. Hade to have someone come all the way from East Spark with a card. Asked for a manager. They never came. Toilet had the worst gross ring around the bowl. I hope no bed bugs  came home. Yea paid $29 for the night. I didn't expect a 5 star but damn!!!! The major credit card thing was the deal breaker for me. NEVER STAYING HERE AGAIN.

First walked into this place and thought "what a crappy hotel/casino!"  Then we found out there is actually another section of the casino.  Thank goodness!  They have cheap drinks here and low limit tables for Black Jack.  I don't care for either.  Not a big drinker, nor do I play Black Jack.  I'm all about slot machines.

Boy, am I happy I came here!  One of our friends recommended coming here and I'm glad we did cause I LOVE their slot machines here.  I guess the crappy hotels do end up paying out.  Woo hoo!  Won me some $$$, baby!

The food seems really cheap too, I'd have to try it sometime.  Too bad we had dinner before coming here, otherwise, we would have eaten here.  The smell of burgers and good greasy food was wafting my way when I was at the slot machines and I kept thinking "oohh yummy!"  See you next time Cal Neva!

*This review is for the casino only.*

Let's just get a few facts out of the way here  Cal Neva Casino has both midget wrestling and karaoke. There is nothing like playing blackjack while someone warbles out Sweet Caroline and everyone at the table screams "bah bah bah!" It's enough to drive you out the door through the small walkway and into the other side of the casino.

Cal Neva also has $3 blackjack tables. If you go to these tables very late at night the other gamblers are as entertaining as the wrestlers and singers on the other side. Sir Nicholas and I played for about an hour with a guy who was smashed and had some real gems for quotes throughout the night like the following:

(To the waitress) "Hey! Bring me two shots of jager and a relationship."
(Later to the waitress) "Can I get your address?" (Nick and I weren't sure about the thought behind this one - why not start with a phone number, man?)
(After being admonished by the pit boss for being to loud and kind of under his breath.) "I really gotta learn how to wrestle." (Because the night always ends well when you wrestle a pit boss.)

He also insisted that Nick and I were in a band - Nick played a guitar and I was the singer. He went so far as to tell us he had brought his guitar and was going to his room to get it because he demanded Nick and I play him one of our songs. He then said that we probably lived in the city (true), drove a Prius (not true), only watched Indie movies (definitely not true as I enjoy Lifetime originals on Sunday afternoons just as much as the next girl), and listened only to Indie bands no one has heard of. He followed this up by yelling, "Don't judge me!" at us. It may sound obnoxious, but to Nick and I it was highly hilarious and entertaining.

And at the end of the night I left with more money than I came with so you gotta love that!

This is for the casino as I've stayed in the hotel and rate that 2.7 as its dated but good enough.

Not sure if it's the smoke, tacky 70s feel or the rough clientele but this place definitely has that je nais seis quoi.  It can get down right dirty in here...and i like it!  I always have so much fun at this place, it truly is a no frills casino but offers up old school fun.

The cocktail waitress' are on top of it, free drinks if your playin of course but $1 tall boys and beer pong tourneys to attract the unr kids, cheap tables w/enhanced gimmicks and the best sportsbook (seat, space and structure wise) as all the sb's seem to have given way to the canadian outfit of william hill.

I'm somewhat bias here as i enjoyed one of the best craps runs ive been a part of into the wee hours when i could hardly see.  Eat like a king in the greasy spoon diner  (4.99 steak eggs) or decent / cheap italian restaurant, mini arcade along w/comps that are fairly generous and seem to have loose enough slots to come back for more.

Entertainment in all angles as Reno 911 shows up w/a valid batting average

Best Blackjack in town....single deck with 3 to 2 blackjack and limits as lo as $3... played there this weekend for 4 hours on $100 and averaging probably $6 a hand and tipping the cocktail waitress a buck every time i got a drink and people I was never without a drink the waitresses are friendly and prompt.  If you like some good old junk food you've hit the jackpot here. Not to mention some big portioned meals at the most reasonable prices. Yeah you might find some slightly better food but for twice the cost..your best value is at Cal-Neva. Also the best sports book in town with the most favorable odds. just check the 3 team parlay pays 6.5 to 1 vs 6 to 1 at every other casino. and better pay outs on all the other parlays then any other casino... yeah its old..rough around the edges...seedy people but the place is safe and fun..

p.s. never stayed at their hotel so no opinion on that

Since I'm not staying here and they have 3 $ min bets at the black jack and craps tables, I have to admit I'm a huge fan, and for me it's as good as it gets! My 60$ lasted all night playing craps and black jack (stay away from slots, especially on the strip and even more especially if you've had more than a fair number of drinks.)

This is the best service on the strip. The drinks are fast and the dealers rarely make mistakes and they especially do not make mistakes that favor of the house. You can tell this is by design. Cal Neva in Reno (aka not the Cal Neva in North Tahoe) hires great dealers, the best I've seen in one place. If you think good dealers don't make a difference check Cal Neva out. I'll make a believer out of you. Your money will last longer here than in any other casino on the Reno strip, save le Circus Circus. But who wants to look at all that pink makes me think of pepto bismol and vomit, in that order.

If I'm in Reno and not playing poker (and I'm lucky enough to have a good babysitter,) this is where you'll find me at 1am. And if I'm with my man and I'm having a good time we'll be there until the graveyard shift clocks out.

They have your classic slot machines and tables. They also have some new high tech slots too! I once won $140 from the penny slots! So I like good old cal neva. Cal neva has always gave me a good time!

I really like playing here. For one, the table limits are lower than the other casinos. So if you are on a unlucky streak, you can decrease your bet. They actually shuffle by hand for three card poker - which is hard to find these days. The dealers and pit bosses are really nice for the most part.

YES it's a bit ghetto. The hotel is old, it is dimly lit, it ain't pretty to say the least. But I always liked playing here despite the grunginess. A con is that the "soda" is generic - something that changed in the last couple of year (recession?)...If you are a gambler, it's worth checking out for a bit.

Like other reviewers before me have said, this is the dive bar of casinos.   definitely my sort of place.   Lots of interesting characters to sit at the bar and 'people-watch'.
Gambling: low limits and friendly dealers (for the most part) and bar staff.  I go maybe 3 times a year and one of the bartenders always remembers me (maybe not a good thing!).
Hotel: I signed up for their VIP customer service thing, and constantly get offers of either comp'd or very cheap rooms.  Even the 'full price' is very decent. Having said that, the rooms are super basic and pretty run down/old, but they serve their purpose.  Oh, and the elevator in the hotel is possible the slowest in the world.
Still giving the place 4 stars though.

I want to start by saying I love divey anything so this casino was a perfect fit for me.  I also love not spending a ton of money on a hotel that I will probably not actually get any sleep in (because who goes on vacation to sleep?...not this girl).  This review is not going to be lengthy because honestly, most of what I experienced was fine and I typically don't write reviews unless I am really impressed or REALLY pissed off.   BUT a few things are worth mentioning.

My biggest beef?  Apparently at midnight, the cleaning staff go home and lock up the supplies.  ALL of the supplies--meaning when you have four people in one room and only one roll of toilet paper, you better remember to ask for more before midnight or you and your shit are out of luck.  Unless you find a nice person on your floor who donates a roll (which thankfully I did).  I mean seriously, the hotel staff don't have a key to room that stores ALL of their supplies?  Either I was being lied to or this hotel needs to get smarter.

The elevators seemed like they were on their last few rides and I feel lucky that I didn't get stuck in one but I am sure that people have or will very soon.

I also didn't experience any great customer service like I saw some others mention but that isn't hurting this review because I had zero expectations of that in a hotel/casino that's this cheap.

Overall, I would stay here again (and ask for extra toilet paper/kleenex/towels upon arrival) because it is cheap, in a good location and I felt safe-ish there and for what you pay, your expectations shouldn't be any higher than that.

We had the BEST time at Cal-Neva. Like, stupid-good time. This is just what we expected a casino to be -- a bit grungy, a bit smoky, a bit disreputable. We played the penny slots, and we spent probably two hours incapable of losing.  The penny slots were comically loose, though we ultimately lost about twenty dollars all told (probably gambled 200 dollars over the course of the evening.)

For the  twenty dollars we lost, we got a lot of amusement and six drinks. The cocktail waitress noticed we were tipping and holy cow, we could barely drink fast enough. Like I said, stupid good time. If the drive wasn't such a nightmare from where I live, I'd probably be back this weekend. This was the best experience we could have asked for, and we'd recommend this Casino to anyone.

Yeah, this place still knows how to handle a guys weekend, cheap rooms and even cheaper beer.  One thing, if you are not familiar, that stench on the 8th floor when the elevator stops and opens, that is just bong water smell, nothing to be worried about. Fortunately we were on the 11th floor, partied all weekend, nobody bothered us, good times.  Perfect for a cheap weekend in Reno with the fellas, DO NOT bring a female significant other here though, unless you want her to ditch you.  Love the Neva, "can't wait" to do it again!

One thing to keep in mind if you never been to Club Cal Neva...is that their hotel is NOT attached to their main casinos. With that being said, even their parking is in a different building from the hotel. Other than those two inconveniences, everything else was good. (very good, I should say). I booked two nights via GetARoom.com and I was very pleased with the price and the room I got. Did I mention free WiFi and free in-room coffee? Minor complaints include:

- not cold enough in the room despite the A/C blowing 24/7
- bed was way too soft on one side and stiffer on the other (old mattress)
- refrigerator was not functioning properly but the smaller freezer was working well
- dust in the coffee maker that holds the water (so obvious)

Even with those flaws, the pros outweigh the cons. Overall, I was still satisfied, especially with the front desk service. If I get that kind of deal again, I will definitely go back to Club Cal Neva.

Hmm. I just realized the Cal-Neva kinda falls into the same situation the Western Village does with me - I like the casino even though it's small and divey, love the cheap eateries and the sports book ... but the hotel has serious noise problems and I can't recommend it. I'll shake the whole thing out to a 4 because I'm fond of the place but the hotel really is 3 at best strongly leaning 2.

Hotel: In the case of the Western Village it was just super paper thin walls ... with the Cal-Neva, most of the rooms seem to have adjoining doors, which means a crack underneath that Neighbor Noise can freely travel through (what's even better is most are right next to the bathrooms, so when trashbags pee without closing the bathroom door you get to hear all about it.) If you get lucky with a considerate neighbor (or if they have rooms w/o adjoining doors) the rooms are alright, if totally bare of bonuses and amenities. They look nice (had some really nice cottage paintings), the bed might have been the most comfy I've slept in in Reno, and generally clean and OK. But the TVs are dying elephants that need to be taken out back and shot, the free WiFi was either completely down or too slow to be usable over the 2 days I was there, and you get total nada for freebies - no coffee in-room, no free food, no discount coupons or match play, no nothin'. No fitness center, pool, jacuzzi, etc. You might be saying, "Whaddaya want for $30 a night!" .. but the Sands offers all that stuff for $20.

This all was from booking directly through their website for a queen non-smoking at $30 a night. Maybe they have baller rooms that you can pay more for that are better ...  I see some dude down in the reviews below talking about free coffee. Or maybe you could just pay $60 and rent two attached rooms for some financially wasteful peace and quiet. Or you could go to one of the many other options in Reno from $20-40 on a weeknight that do a lot better. Sorry Cal-Neva, I like all your other stuff, but in this market you can't really get away with a substandard hotel room even at $30 a night.

One positive about the hotel - the staff is excellent across the board. The desk staff was kind and responsive, housekeepers are sweet and polite, even the engineer guy was real cool. This extends over to the casino floor and into the restaurants - people who work for the Cal Neva generally seem like they actually enjoy their jobs and want you to have a good time, even if you aren't spending a whole lot of money.

Casino: Smokey, but not as bad as other lower-end places. Weird characters at night, but not as standoffish as other low-end places. Decent mix of tables, slots and video poker. Video poker pay tables tend to be Meh but I've found decent ones here and there ... but they rotate them around and change them at random times, so you have to pick around the place if you haven't been there in a few weeks. Table games probably a better choice and more fun, you get some real characters playing here. Sports book is great, not as swanky as the Peppermill or Atlantis but better deals if you want to make small wagers, and a comfy and pleasant enough place to watch games.

Player's Club is a bit mysterious. They issue you a "Gold Member" card initially, but there's no like tier list or tier points that I'm aware of. I think maybe you can only get comps through play, no other little bonuses. Supposedly they send out mailers but I haven't received anything as of yet. I'll reserve judgement for now but it seems a lot less robust than the other lower-end player's clubs in Reno.

Restaurants: Top Deck is a great place to spend 10 bucks max (after 20% tip) and still get a very decent meal in a comfy, unpretentious environment with good servers. Separate review up of that. The steak house looks very reasonably priced, but it's only open Thu-Sun nights and somehow I'm never rolling through here on those days. I'll catch it eventually. Grill downstairs makes a pretty good footlong hot dog with fries among other quick junk food stuff for an OK price. Some dog-and-draft specials up at the sports bar that are OK. Bud 16 oz. $1 at all times available pretty much anywhere in the joint except the Grill, I think.

Le Conclusion: I'll definitely be back to eat and likely back to play a bit, but I'm leery on the hotel even at $30 a night after that creepy adjoining door business. If anyone has intel on their other types of rooms I'd love to hear it, PM me.

Well while at the bar we noticed a cocktail waitress with huge nasty fake tits get off her shift plop right down at the bar n start getting drunk...OK that's fine. Its not fine when u get sloppy drunk and start hitting on my bf asking if he wants to feel ur tits!! I should've broke my beer bottle across the whores head but jail didn't seem like a fun place to spend my Saturday night. Then I proceeded to watch this chick go in the bathroom where I followed to confront her and all you here is deep sniffing coming out of her stall.  Hmmm a whore and a coke head?!? You know that saying you don't know what you have until it's gone, well I never missed breathing so much. This place smells so much like smoke that it was as if someone used ashtrays as air fresheners. The smell really engulfs you and will stick to your clothes. Came here because I was in the area and saw the cheap meal deals, guess I shoulda read the fine print about how the dishes came with emphysema. Unfortunately I was not able to stay long enough to play the slots or the tables. I would not recommend this place for nonsmokers or anyone with young children.

"The Neva" has become a family tradition since my grandfather introduced me to this casino at the tender age if 21.

Make no doubt about it this is an old, outdated, dingy no-nonsense casino. If you want to gamble to make money and have a good time, this is the place. If you like losing your money surrounded by pretty lights, cool music and hipster douche bags then this may not be the place for you.

Cal-Neva offers the lowest table minimums, $1 beer specials, $1 add-on shot specials, multiple food deals under $10 and better odds than most other casinos. I frequent Reno every 2-3 months and Cal-Neva is always a good time. More times than not I stumble out of there with winnings in pocket. I'll visit other casinos while in town for one of their clubs or restaurants but I gamble almost exclusively at Cal-Neva. It just doesn't make sense to gamble anywhere else if you're into making money.

I give 5 stars for the casino based on gambling. Not ambience, decor, etc. Basing it strictly on minimums, availability of tables and slots, odds and the amount of money in my pocket when I leave.

Their hotel should really be a separate listing to review. I would give it 3 stars and that's probably being generous since I'm a guy that doesn't need all the comforts a woman or metro guy would want. There is nothing "nice" about their hotel which you have to cross a street to get to. It's a room with a bed, bathroom and TV and that's about it. I crash there no problem but would not stay there with my wife.

Moral of the story is don't stay there but definitely visit for the drinking and gambling.

The Cal Neva definitely has the feel of the smaller, older casinos on Fremont Street in Vegas.  They have the lowest table minimums I saw in town, and the cage offers the low-priced, greasy food that goes so well with late night gambling and drinking.

The casino is split into two separate buildings.  This turned out to be a blessing, because the karaoke can be painful.  I've been to karaoke where it's bad and everyone has a fun time, but this was ear piercing enough to run us to the other side.  When we came back the next night, the same guy was there assaulting everyone's ear drums.

All of the dealers and servers were great, so playing there was a blast.  What keeps me from going five stars is the smoke.  Since the casino is split into two small spaces, the smoke is so thick that it just lingers the entire time.  All of the casinos have amsoke issue; it's just more concentrated at the Cal Neva.

Played craps and ate here while visiting Reno for a couple nights. It's a ok place to gamble at for craps since they got $3.00 minimums for craps but it's a old casino so there's no glamour here at all and while I was playing, a dealer got annoyed just because I asked him for some change with my chips and he acted like he couldn't do it because he acted like they we're busy when they weren't even busy at all but he still gave me the change but what a jerk!. Take a chill pill dude!!. But I still had fun playing craps here. The food here is cheap and good. Four of us ate for less than $40.00 and that was with the tip and we all liked it.

Pretty good experience here noting the fact that a room was less than 30$ tax included. It was not as "up to date", but at this price it's a steal and a good place to say if you need a place to crash. Also, the Casino is great. Again, not as flashy as other casinos on the strip but I must say I've had better luck here than any other Casino in Reno! And the drink is dirt-cheap!

We stayed at the Nevadan , part of CalNeva. Huge mistake!!!!!!!  The elevator was broke but still operatable. It took 20 mins to run its course on the floors. The stairs were a lot of fun. It's just an old school facility that needs the wrecking ball. It has fallen far behind the modern casino resorts. Classic is cool but not when it's missing the auora, mystique of a place with rich history & tradition. The casino was fine & the restraunt was not bad but avoid the hotel at all costs!!!!!   I didn't even mention the parking setup. Just avoid. Trust me!!!!!

I had a pocket full of change from using the cash out machines. I tried to use 5 pennies to pay for part of a keno ticket. I'm talking 5 pennies here, not the end of the world. However I guess they decided that a United states minted coin is not considered legal tender in the United states.  At least the top deck restaurant is a good value.

The rooms were basic yet the double bed rooms were pretty spacious. The staff were friendly and pretty accommodating. The beds were surprisingly very comfortable. The view from the 17th floor was pretty nice. The down side of the hotel and would have earned them the 4th star was the parking was off the casino across the streets, and not located near the actual hotel. However it was conveniently located near the casino which are kept very clean and inviting. The casino and hotel were located in the heart of the strip in downtown Reno. We will definitely stay again because it was affordable and accommodating to our family. Thank You so much Ken Barlor, VP of the Cal Neva, without his invitation we would never have experienced what the Cal Neva had to offer. We will return next year for our family vacation.

A famous landmark in Reno, Cal Neva to me is really more of a 2-star place, but the friendly and fun dealers are good for another star. I've never stayed here, but it's a good place to find low table limits... The place is sort of run down, dingy, and dirty, but you get what you pay for here

And the clientele is always, and I do mean *always*, an "interesting" blend, anything from cracked out homeless guys throwing their gov't assistance check away, to pimps and drunken college kids.

I prefer to visit other places in Reno, but it's almost never dull here

Not only has it not been cleaned in 30+ yrs the dealers are really rude.  You'd expect a place that has really nothing going for it to have some people working there with manners, especially when they work for tips?  :(   The lady dealing blackjack had an attitude like she was in some kind of prison camp.  I just immediately left and went to a better casino (not difficult to do better).

Even their blackjack games are the standard double on only 10/11 for single deck.  Why would anyone ever go here with the poor attitude and the filth in this place?!

We wanted a hotel with 0% chance of bugs and affordable. I found Club Cal Neva on Yelp and it was very cheap, 34.95 with tax for my husband and I. The bed was comfy but it was a bit hard to sleep with so many sirens in the background. I can't say for sure whether it was bug free but I didn't see any signs of bugs. Our sink was gross, though. The water that came out had little flecks of black stuff that stuck to the plastic hotel cups and floated on the water. So I went to the vending machine for water but it wouldn't take dollar bills....just bring your own water. The restaurant was a kick, classic casino with old smoker ladies and lots of steak options on the menu.

What says welcome to a dump more then having dried jizz on a headboard in your room. It was disgusting.  The room looked as though it hadn't been cleaned since the last time it was updated, which was probably the days of Sinatra. We should have known that was to  be the case when first trying to get to our room. One elevator was out of service, and the other ran slow and what I consider to be a deathtrap. Turns out as we checked out, the elevators to the parking area broke down. The place is a dump and I don't recommend it. I would give one star due to the fact some of the employees were nice/understanding/helpful... except of course the cleaning staff. Ok place to gamble, but don't stay at the hotel itself.

I kind of rediscovered the Cal Neva recently after getting bored with other casinos on the downtown corridor.  It's typical of the old-skool, dimly lit places I've grown so fond of.  Here, you'll encounter super friendly staff members everywhere - from the cashiers to the slot attendants to the security staff.

Excellent dollar slots - give the Nevadan house machines a try!  They are basically the same machines as the Bally Blazing Sevens, only with bobcat and ram graphics instead of sevens, and tons looser.  Some of the other house machines, like the Wild Turkey, Hog Wild, and the Straight Arrow, also pay very well.  I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not playing here on a more consistent basis throughout the decade I've spent in Reno both as a visitor, and now a local, but better late than never - your money will truly last longer here, for the most part.

The comp system seems to be very good, with an excellent setup that gives you the option of receiving free play or cold hard cash back (the cash back option being something I haven't seen in most mainstream casinos in many years,) in addition to the mailers you will receive after a bit of gaming activity, which usually also include weekly free play on select machines.

The Casino Grill is not to be missed - go for the Phat Philly, the Egg McNeva, or quarter pound hot dog special.  Be aware that the Casino Grill is the only place inside the property that requires getting a comp slip from the Slot Club, in the event you are using comps to pay for your food.  All other restaurants simply let you slide your players card.  There's a kiosk outside of the Top Deck that allows you to check your comp balances.

The Top Deck restaurant is also great - be sure to try the menu specials.  I found the Steak and Pasta House to be very good as well.

I didn't realize it until just recently, but the casino has three floors, so be sure to check everything out.  I can't comment on the hotel as I haven't stayed yet, although I did find out that no pets are allowed there.

Consider the Cal Neva before some of the other bigger resorts on the gaming corridor.  It's not fancy by any means, but It seems like it's the last little bit of "Old Reno" left downtown.

IMPORTANT TIP:  I've been in casinos all over the world, and here's one thing that I encountered here regarding slot machine play, particularly with the Nevadans, that I've never seen or heard of anywhere else in my life.  If you encounter any type of win, be courteous and do a single-credit spin to clear the winning combination off the board.  I know, it sounds crazy, and you as a gambler usually have the option to do it or not do it (naturally, if someone sees a winning combination on the board, chances are they won't play it - although miracles happen, chances are it's going to be a while before it hits again, and I've lost my ass on many occasions due to people doing what I call these "single trick spin-outs!")  I was notified by several slot technicians here that unfortunately, the owners have a rule that if the machines don't get played enough, the slot technicians are required to do these single credit spin-outs using money out of their own pockets, which is very unfair in my eye, as most casinos have a separate fund for this.  These folks work hard, and I'm sure this requirement really adds up to a lot of their lost wages over time.

I came here after hearing that the slot machines were loose and it was easier to win here. I am not much of a gambler, but I would spend time time on the penny machines while my other friends played poker. This place was dead when I came here around 1 a.m. on a Saturday! I was fooled! I stayed for a short time and went back to Harrah's. I saw a sign for $4.00 steak and eggs and that would be the only reason why I would come back here.

Come to play Blackjack.

- Small casino on the Virginia strip.
- $3 minimum.
- 17 to 1 black jack side bet either dealer or yourself.
- Double on 10 and 11 only. Split Aces okay
- With 3-4 players, 4 hands of single deck black jack for reshuffle.
- 3:2 blackjack.
- Great place to enjoy game of blackjack. Best odds for $3 min on strip and penetration is fair.

What's not to love about this downtown hotspot? How about that cool alleyway that takes you to the $1 Buds and $1 shots? VIP tables? Check. Poppin' nightclub? Check. Oh, man, I love Cal Nevada and all it brings. I don't remember how I found this place last year, but I make it a point to come back every time I'm in town. If you splurge on a $1 tall can of Bud, you're offered a shot for one more buck. America at its finest. I really can't comment on anything else because I don't dare try their food nor would I risk booking a penthouse suite in their tower. However, after reading all these Yelps, I might cut back on my 10 beer and 10 shots and see what else Cal Nevada has to offer. Or maybe not.

Pros:
+ $1 Vodka
+ $1 Beer
+ Elegant
+ Fine dining
+ Late hours

Cons:
- Nothing. Perfection.

Sat at the counter next to tired looking, desert-worn gamblers. The place is packed with Walmart people. Would be a weird place to hang out in the middle of the night after you've lost $100 at video blackjack.

I first went to Cal Neva on July 6th of this year and it was on a Sunday, so it was slow throughout the day.

I got to play my first ever live poker tournament and finished in 4th place. Had a fun time despite a bad beat on my part.

I also played Pai Gow Poker at $5 minimums as well as Double Deck games of Blackjack at $3 and $5 minimums (Both of which pay 3 to 2 on a Blackjack and the latter of which had slightly liberal rules).

Also played Craps at a $3 minimum with 3x-4x-5x odds and pays triple on a 12 on the field bet. And played Three Card Poker at a $3 minimum as well.

I had a lot of fun with those games and I only lost a few bucks after the day was done.

The best part of the Cal Neva besides the games and the Poker Tournaments is the Top Deck restaurant and food was amazing and the price was more than right. I had the breakfast sandwich and it was sooooo good and later had the steak and fries also really good. Both meals each cost $5.99. :D

All in all, the place isn't as bad as a dump as some people have called it. The dealers were friendly to me and I had a great time.

Next time, I will bring my mom on my next visit.

Booking a same night room here on a holiday weekend cost me over $100. "You get what you pay for" is sometimes a gamble.

The room was just what I expected from a hotel on the strip: old and dirty.  The room did not have a refrigerator, coffee maker, or microwave. No laundry service.

The carpet was stained, the bed sheets had cigarette burns, the tub had food (almonds) stuck in the drain, and maintenance had to repair the toilet.

My room was on the 12th floor, so the view was great even if the window didn't open. (There isn't a 13th floor.)

I can't promise I will book in advance (to pay a more appropriate rate) but I would stay here again.

I've never stayed at the Cal-Neva, nor have I ever eaten there. When I think of Cal-Neva, I think cheap alcohol. 5 for $5 Kamikaze shots is what their most well known for, amongst my friends. They always have drink specials. I went there, to get the night started, on my birthday and the bartender was wonderful. He kept the drinks coming. To be honest, I probably won't ever eat or stay here, but I'll be back to drink and throw some money in a machine.

Not a bad Casino to go in, they have pretty girls asking if you want drinks, so cant complain about free drinks while your playing slots!(or table games)

This place doesn't look like it's had a face-lift since the early 80s/late 70s. The gaming machines were all new, but the rest of the joint reeked of sleaze and cheap exploitation. I never gambled there, but I did stop in for a quick bite to eat a few times and I honestly felt like I had stepped back in time. I guess people looking to get drunk and lose money don't care what the place looks like, but this place is old and tired and probably the sorriest-looking casino in Reno.

I've been to Reno many times for business as well as pleasure, but have never stayed here.  And I will never again if I can help it.  Compared to the many other hotel choices nearby, you'd be foolish to choose Cal Neva.  The hotel portion is very outdated, dirty, and badly needing renovations.  The carpets throughout are torn, dirty looking and dated.  The elevators are slow, old, and sound like they're on last legs.  The room looked like it was used to film "MadMen, but dirtier.  No coffeemaker (?), 19" TV that doesn't get CBS, no microwave or fridge.  There wasn't even the usual in room propaganda...no hotel directory, guide to the city, pen & paper or phone book.  The clock radio continuously read "12:00", and not blinking as if it needed to be reset.  I wasn't here to gamble, but I had to go through the casino in order to get to the restaurants.  There was a visible layer of smoke.  The saddest thing was seeing several older COPD'ers walking around with their O2 tanks in the smokiness.  Also, thought they advertise free in room wireless, my iPad couldn't find either network.  A call to the operator for help merely got me the "not my job" response, with an offer to tell the IT person in the AM.  Gee, thanks.

To be fair, there are a few positives.  The Top Deck restaurant had fast service and good food. Most of the staff were friendly.  The room was "livable", but without the usual amenities.  The point of all this is, if you don't care about in room amenities and just need a room in which to rest your weary slot pulling arm, this place will suffice.  But there are MUCH better choices.
