The Impulsive Group's flagship property, Sanctuary Hotel New York, has been a labor of love for its proprietors since they began developing the property in early 2010. Originally built in 1908 and previously known as Hotel Rio, Sanctuary Hotel New York consists of 9 stories and offer a total of 111 luxury guest rooms.

The transformation and renovations from old hotel began in early 2010 inspired by father and son duo, Hank and Brandon Freid.  After perfecting the art of chic budget hotels, Hank and Brandon's passion to create a luxury destination hotel is being realized.

if you enjoy the staff walking in on your room not once but twice during your one night stay and a very slow freight elevator, no bar, restaurant, concierge and one front desk agent, this is the hotel for you. it is a great location and the rooms are very small but nice (10 per floor, 6 very small and 4 small) and the white curtains separating the romo from the bathroom and closets will surely be disgusting in a couple months. wait til they get it together and then give it a try.

Arrived on a Monday morning for a one night stay. My room was ready at 11:00am  which was a pleasant surprise and great beginning to my day. Before I went up to my room, the Concierge, Brandon, spent about 30 minutes with me giving me taxi tips, subway directions, making dinner reservations, and mapping out the locations of the clothing stores I wanted to visit. Brandon was helpful, patient, kind and thoughtful. I felt like he would help me out during my visit, day or night, if I needed it. This was important to me since I was traveling alone and I think he understood that. Many, many thanks to you Brandon for providing exceptional customer service! Then there is Michael to thank. Michael helped me navigate back to the hotel late afternoon when I called to get directions. He stayed on the phone with me until I found the hotel and he was so happy to meet me. Michael and I talked for nearly 45 minutes. He told me about his experience growing up in Rhode Island and what brought him to NYC. Michael is another grand example of providing outstanding customer service to his guests. Thank you, Michael, for helping to make my stay at The Sanctuary an outstanding experience. By the way, the bed and pillows were ultra comfortable and the room was extremely clean. I couldn't have been happier or slept better. When I asked Michael for an iced tea, one of the hotel staff ran across the street to get me a cup. Who does that these days? Bravo to the hotelier who hired Brandon and Michael. Both gentlemen should be recognized in a meaningful way for the special way they treat their guests. They are just the kind of representatives of your hotel that you want them to be. I will definately stay here again.

some of the nicest, most accommodating people ever.
as we all know, hurricane irene was supposed to hit this past weekend and as the general manager of a retail location in times square i refused to let my store shut down because of lack of mta service or a little rain, so i reserved a room at the sanctuary hotel because they have a pets allowed policy and because i could house myself, my dog, and my five brave staff members for the weekend.
my dog is not small, but they made an exception because of the impending storm and allowed me to let my 60pound dog stay in the room with me. i was expecting attitude throughout my stay because of the dog situation but the staff was as nice as they could possibly be.
the hotel was so clean and so pretty and really, the name SANCTUARY is so perfect for it.
the location is great. its on a side street in times square so you can choose to go into the madness by turning left or to walk away from the times square madness by turning right.
i really think everyone should take a shot and stay here.
if i wasnt with my employees it would have been the perfect place for a romantic and sensual stay.

Although I didn't stay here, I have dealt with this management team-from the manager, to the owner, to the front desk manager, and the events coordinator-these were some of the most un-hospitable people I have ever worked with...Like Suz-C (below) dealing with each person was a whirlwind of broken promises and "no's", that got no where..

We went here for my boyfriend's birthday and stayed for four nights.  Wells let's start off first with the reservation.  I made it online and then I called to add on another night.  The guy told me he would add it on.  I called back about two weeks prior to our trip just to make sure because I am really paranoid about things like reservations because I've had some bad experiences with lost reservations.  Good thing I checked because the guy didn't update it.  Luckily it was easy enough to add on another night.  We arrived there before check in time at 3, and they said they would call us if they could check us in earlier.  We came back a little after 3 from having lunch around Madison Park, and no they didn't call us at all.

The room is small, but it's New York City, so you can't really expect spacious rooms.  Even with the air conditioner running, it gets pretty humid in the room.  And its annoying that you have to put in your room card for the electricity and AC to work, and you can't keep it in there because when the maid service comes, they take it out.  But they have pretty decent maid service.  The hotel is small, less than 10 floors, with only a couple of rooms on each floor.  It's white on the outside, and a little tacky with the purple/red lights that shines on it.  But we didn't stay in NYC to stay in the hotel all day.  So we didn't really care much.  Everything was smooth until our check out.

When we left, we asked for them to get us a cab.  They didn't get us a cab; instead they got us in this black SUV, which I later learn is a car service on its own.  They should've given us that option.  To get a normal cab or their car service.  But they didn't.  The guy just puts our stuff in the car.  When we get in the car, the guy starts to drive and tells us about how there's two different ways to go, the usual way and the way with toll.  The way with toll is more expensive.  It felt extremely shady.  So my boyfriend asks how much is it going to be.  The guy was like $70 without the tolls.  My boyfriend goes, but a taxi is only $45 from the airport to Manhattan, flat rate.  So this is where it goes all WRONG.  The driver LIES and says that its the rate from the airport to Manhattan, not the other way around.  That they charge differently from Manhattan to the airport.  It was raining, so we decided whatever, we'll just go because by that time we aren't really in the city anymore and trying to find another cab wouldn't be as easy.  

When we get there, I had to go to an atm to get cash because I did not want this man to have my credit card number.  He only had one of those non electronic swipe machines that encodes all of your numbers and information.  The whole process was too shady for me to even want to do that.  What a horrible ending.  We tried calling the hotel to tell them they shouldn't do that to their customers.  When we asked for a manager, we were only told there wasn't one at the time.  

We did not appreciate that the hotel didn't just get us a cab as we requested.  Instead we were put into a car service we didn't ask for.  They (the hotel) shouldn't do business with shady businesses, and they shouldn't try to think they can get away with that either.  Don't stay here.  It simply was a lack of respect for their customers who stay there.

Stayed here for 9 days and loved our experience!  Great customer service.  We were within walking distance to everything.  We were on the 6th floor and did not have any problems with noise.  The room was small but met all expectations and then some.  The staff went above and beyond with all our requests.  We knew the place was still under renovation, but with all located nearby, we did not miss the restaurant or bar.  Highly recommend this hotel. Their is a diner right across the street that had great breakfast.

This brand new hotel is the perfect place for business travelers. It is in times square and walking distance to the fashion district. The rooms are done in impeccable taste  and have the most comfortable beds with the softest Frette Bedding. For a boutique hotel, they have amazing service and one of the best concierge teams i have experienced in NYC... they were able to secure dinner reservations at Asselina and Nobu 57 when even American Express Centurion could not.  The owner, as he gave me one of the chauffeured Bentley's to take me to the airport,  told me that an amazing restaurant is on the way that will deliver to the rooms and really make the lobby a cool scene. This is the hotel for me and all the people i Fly into NY.

Aside from being dear friends of the Owner. The Sanctuary hotel had a very sweet and relaxing aura to it. The staff were very friendly and attentive to your needs, the decor breathtaking and modern, and location prime, just one block from Times Square!

Staying at this hotel as I write this, and I can best sum it up like this:

The good:
Friendly, responsive staff
Nice decor
Close to Times Square and Rockefeller Center

The bad:
Very small rooms, even by NY standards, and I was in a King bedroom
No outside light in rooms that don't face front
Not setup as a business travel hotel

It's essentially an old NY hotel/building that's been renovated with new decor and furniture.  They've done a good job, and the staff is great.  But just be aware that they are very small rooms.  I could literally take 3 steps from the bed and be in the bathroom.

Also, WiFi (which at least was free) did not work for over half a day.  That's maybe not an everyday experience, but it was inconvenient since I was in NY for business.

While searching for 4 star hotels on Expedia for my trip to NYC. I came across The Sanctuary as an option for my stay.

The website showed some pictures of a really upscale hotel, and when i arrived, thats the type of impression i got right off the bat.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. The room that we were staying in at first was very nice but a bit small. We upgraded to a King Suite and couldnt have been happier.

The hotel is centrally located and walking distance to everything. The construction that is going on was a bit loud but after we changed rooms to the King suite we didn't hear it anymore.

I can say that when I make another trip to NYC i will consider staying here again. I cant wait to see what it will look like when its complete. Its already impressive as is.

We didnt have the option to order room service or grab a drink at their bar because it wasn't completed yet. But its ok, there were plenty of places right outside the hotel.

You should check this place out.

This hotel is fairly new but it is a great boutique hotel.
Upon my arrival, they still have some work done. Despite of that, my stayed was good. I was put on the 6th floor and consider it is pretty high. My room is facing the other building, so no view..
Bathroom has a lot of space. It designed for handicap use as well. They use luxury towel but use unknown bath products. Only down side is their shower and sink area doesn't have any room to put your travel bath case regardless how much space they have. They need some shelving or some kind. Their bed? is very comfortable (Nice and soft).
Floor hallway is quiet narrow, ( just like the NY apartments) so whenever the other room guest shut their door (especially the typical slam door traveller) you hear it. Even housekeeping... door by door.. you can hear it.
Front entrance, exceptional well done. The use of columns and large wood doors with red carpet, just make very dramaic entrance.  Lobby wise, quiet dark.

This is the way to go! Sanctuary Hotel will be always be my first choice each time I return to NYC. I am certain my girlfriends, Franchesca and Leslie, whom I traveled with would agree 100%.

The staff performed above and beyond our expectations. We participated in Shecky's Girls Night Out to showcase "Le'Frank's" online boutique, KocoSky. This entailed making arrangements - particularly with Jennifer Lopes - to have parcels shipped to the hotel and securely stored till our arrival. We were in and out all hours of the day and night, yet the staff never failed to make us feel welcome upon every return. One evening, I rang Angie and asked whether I could heat up my leftovers - there was no microwave in the room. Next thing I knew, Thomas was at my door, brought my food down to their kitchen, heat it up, and returned it perfectly ready to eat.

The hospitality at Sanctuary is like no other I have experienced. The upscale ambiance of the hotel is a mere bonus.

I cannot wait to see the new lounge and restaurant as well as the staff - Angie, George, Jennifer, Thomas, and everyone else - later this year.

This is located in the prefect place. Walk down the street and you are in front of the TKTS ticket booth in Times Square.

Big Thank You to Jennifer and the staff for going above and beyond basic service. We arrived at 6 am from a red eye and  they turned around a room for us quickly so we could get some sleep before our business meeting. Our room was clean and due to the location in the building extremely quiet. Only the air conditioning was noisy but you couldn't hear the street traffic or our neighbors.

The hotel is swanky and stylish. It only has a privacy curtain around the shower and sink area which didn't bother us. I would absolutely stay here again.

The staff made my entire family feel very welcome and at home. I was very impressed with the style of both of our rooms...the double double is a nice size, and is very well appointed, the queen single was very compact and stylish. Superior location and high style make it a fun NYC experience. Breakfast buffet could really have been better.

The hotel itself is beautiful, from the lobby to the rooms to the rooftop bar. But what made it memorable was the service. The doormen were welcoming and the front desk was amazing. Besides the fact that they got my fiance and I a last minute reservation in the theater district so we could catch our show, they never stopped smiling and were eager to help in any way. Best New York hotel experience I've ever had. Would definitely go back.

I went to an event at the Rooftop Bar at the Sanctuary Hotel last night and used the bathroom downstairs in the lobby on my way home. I was in a hurry and ended up leaving my iphone on the counter! I realized it when I was about five blocks away and ran back and someone had actually turned it into the front desk. This hotel is very nice, the staff were very helpful and the guests are pretty honest/classy people!

The Sanctuary Hotel was a great place to stay. Wonderful Location too - one block from Times Square, the other direction places you on 5th Avenue.

It was unique and didn't have the atmosphere of  "just another hotel" chain. Awesome lighting effects at night, lobby and entrance. Easy to point out to a taxi driver.

The people were wonderful too.  We actually stayed here for our honeymoon and they made sure were taken care of, and even sent us a gift from the front-desk staff (everyone signed it too).  Lenny is at your service with a smile! They had great suggestions for how to spend our time (first time in New York)

For breakfast: we stayed over Labor Day weekend, so the hotel didn't serve any free breakfast (apparently not over any weekend.)  I would say the little fresh co-op right across from the hotel. quick and easy.  However, avoid the diner one block away.

I would certainly stay here again.

I can't say enough good things about this fabulous little hotel. Just returned from the city and had a relaxing stay steps away from Times Square. The staff is friendy and attentive from the moment you enter until the moment you leave. The room was immaculate and appointed beautifully. The public spaces were lovely. Having a breakfast provided was a bonus. I can't wait to return to what is truley a "sanctuary" in the city.

I am literally on the phone waiting for them as I write this.  Let's note this down that i've been waiting a total of 12 minutes when I called and asked to cancel some reservations.  

Needing to cancel some reservations for work, I expected this to be one of the easiest tasks during my work day.  Not so.  Not to mention, I called YESTERDAY as well to try to do the same exact thing.  The representative told me he could not cancel them, we would have to accept the entire charge of the rooms even though it's three weeks in advance, and proceeded to tell me he would send a message to the boss about 'maybe' being able to cancel.  I thought this type of policy from a so-called fancy hotel was unfounded.  I never was NOT able to cancel anything prior to 48 hours at a hotel.  I also never trust anybody when they say they'll forward a message to so-and-so because I know it never gets done.  Thus my call to them today.

14 minutes and counting!!!

I've also had prior experience with this hotel, about a month ago when I needed to get information on reserving their meeting rooms.  Well, guess what?  Same result.  I was put on hold for several minutes before I was transferred to someone who answered few quick questions for me.  And few reps even gave me the wrong information by saying they had this and this meeting room, and then transferred me around, and finally took down my info to hand me over to someone else who would call me back.  Safe to safe nobody called me back.  After a call the next following day, the catering manager finally told me they don't even have a complete "closed" off meeting room such as what the other reps claimed.  Totally pulling shit out they ass!?  If you don't know, you don't know. What are we playing a guessing game here?

Yesterday was quite frustrating due to my numerous failed attempts to call the hotel after the line ringing once, then hanging up.  I'm not sure what that was about.  Broken line? For a hotel in Times Square??  Unbelievable.

Finally just had someone pickup and surely enough - apologize for the unruly wait.  It was 19 minutes total.  This gentlemen by the name of Hughes was able to help me cancel all my reservations, despite prior notification yesterday that we would be charged the full amount since the reservations were non-refundable, which obviously was not true.  What a bunch of crock.  And what a bunch of unpredictable competency from staff.

I'm glad I reached this kind of conclusion and resolution...Hughes to the rescue!  But after all the total experiences and unhelpful situations, and prior convictions, it certainly does not make up for all the mistakes and just downright bad customer service I get from the general staff.

I consider myself a NYC veteran, having traveled there for business and pleasure many times. However, my companion had never been to "The Big Apple" and  I wanted to get the typical tourist stuff off of his bucket list and quickly.

Finding an affordable (but comfortable) hotel in NYC  and also located close to Times Square is always a challenge. But when you take someone to NYC for the first time it's the best place to stay. On this trip I was in luck. I stumbled across a special "opening" rate for The Sanctuary.  This small boutique hotel is just off of Broadway, but far enough to avoid much of the noise.  

The staff is amazing and very attentive. From the moment we arrived they provided for everything we needed. When you first walk in you notice that the lobby is dark in a way that screams sexy and luxurious. It has a modern meets the orient feel.  Furnishings and decorations go beyond the normal hotel staples and you feel you have walked into one of the city's private galleries.

The rooms are tiny even by NYC standards, but they are comfortable and the bedding is some of the best.  If you pack a lot of bags or have large packages it might get crowded, but with a little maneuvering you can make room.  Let's face it; you don't go to New York City to stay in the room.  

The glass and tile shower has an amazing rain head and the provided toiletries are top of the line. The towels are over-sized and plush.  Because the toilet is in a small closet with a sliding door and the shower is only separated from the bed by a curtain, I would suggest any roommates be on the intimate level.  

There was an art reception that we were able to attend on our last night there and the bar area was welcoming and cozy.  It's definitely a grownup's hotel and not especially kid friendly.  I would suggest this hotel if you are looking for a cozy and romantic escape in the city.

We stayed here for one night for a getaway. The first glacé outside is a red carpeted stoop, with a doorman. We were in and out a lot and had varying doorman, some which were on the ball, others that were not. One was on his cell phone and propped the door open for us the way you might hold it for a stranger at the bank.

Checking in, the staff were wonderfully nice and helpful. The concierge asked what we were in town for and hearing it was our first wedding anniversary he arranged for complimentary sparkling wine which we requested to have setup in our room for when we returned that night and it was.

I have to remove a star because the internal soundproofing is bad. We couldn't hear any street noise or even the very loud music from the rooftop lounge but the people across the hall had a screaming child and were in and out until 2am, slamming the door loudly every single time. That greatly annoyed me.

The room itself is just big enough to hold what it must, very tastefully decorated, very clean. The bedding is awesome. So comfortable.

They offer a free continental breakfast but its nothing special, but they will happily plan a brunch out for you if you ask.

I would recommend this hotel but suggest that at check in you request a room away from others guests. If we were here for more than one night I'd have had to complain and request a room change due to the noise.

My husband and I stayed here in early May, and it was the best NYC hotel experience I've had, by far. It really did feel like a sanctuary, as it was just around the corner from Times Square, but it kept an elegant and intimate environment that seemed worlds away.
As others have pointed out, the guest experience and concierge (they refer to them as the STAR team) are what make the hotel stand out. They provided great service before we even arrived, recommending great restaurants to our taste and hooking us up with reservations, including some tough ones to obtain. Everyone on staff was extremely helpful and gracious.
The rooms were nicely furnished with a modern sensibility and included new facilities. Although the room was "New York small", by keeping the sleeping area and bath section open together in a studio (with an optional curtain if privacy is needed), the room felt bigger than it was.
Some minor nits: the garment hanging area in the room was unusually small, and the breakfast was sparse even for a continental service. But don't let that keep you away from a top-notch hotel.

I've stayed in probably over twenty NYC hotels and this is one of the most nicest boutique hotels I've stayed in. The staff is uber friendly and personable. Upon check-in you are welcomed with spa water, ambient music, and fires roaring in the fireplaces. The vibe is laid-back and luxe. Rooms are small (read: shoebox) but nicely appointed. Seriously I stepped in the room and thought Candid Camera was going to show up to document how crazy my face must have looked. The Queen Superior (we used booking.com ) had a comfortable bed, modern bath, and no-view--though brownie points for the frosted window on the bottom and the view of the alley with the graffiti art? The roof top lounge is great--enjoyed a spiker (hot apple "drank") and some apps--great service and anywhere a DJ is spinning tunes at 6pm while I get my drink/eat on is stellar in my opinion. It's convenient Midtown location makes it a great choice for those wanting to be near Times Square without the noise.

My now husband and I stayed at Sanctuary on our wedding night. After the most perfect wedding imaginable we arrived at the hotel and was greeted by very friendly bell boy who took our bags and wedding gifts to our room. The lobby was STUNNING! The lighting and decor was fabulous and everyone was extremely nice! Check in was simple and fast!  We got to our room and when I opened the door I was surprised with a GIANT bouquet of red roses that my husband called steroid roses! They were massive and smelled like a dream! There were rose pedals scattered on the floor leading up to the bed and a basket of leftover pedals that we ended up  throwing at each other later on. lol. There was also a lovely plate of little treats with a personalized card congratulating us on our marriage.  

The room screamed sex so plenty of that was had. The red leather headboard and vintage looking chandelier were to die for and the shower was hot and steamy... We stayed up all night opening wedding gifts and drinking champagne! It was perfect. The next morning a lovely complimentary breakfast was provided that consisted of coffee, tea, juice, muffins, bagels, cereal, hard boiled eggs and fruit. Upon checkout we were greeted by the hotel manager, Jeremy Poon, as my husband and Jeremy had been corresponding prior about setting up our room with the lovely roses. We had such an amazing time at Sanctuary and can't thank the AMAZING staff enough for being apart of a flawless day! We both live and work in Manhattan so we will see you on our next staycation!

Sanctuary IS a sanctuary from the other chain type hotels around the Times Square area. Gorgeous boutique hotel, with very friendly, attentive front of house staff. The room I was saw was small, even by NYC standards, but had a gorgeous glass-enclosed shower with plenty of room for 2 if you want to go that route . . . proceeded by opening the shower door and rolling right in the bed, since it's like a foot away ;)

Other than the tight quarters, it's very modern, clean and everything is new, so check it out if you aren't hoping your room is a loft-style spot in Soho. Rooftop bar is nice, but at $24 a glass, my Veuve Cliquot Rose should have been in glass, not plastic. I certainly wouldn't waste my beverage by tossing it over the rooftop wall at that cost. I might, however, have wanted to toss it at one of the 21 yr old kids dancing around to a mix of Britney Spears and N'Sync that the dj was playing. Not sure I'd return to the rooftop bar at night after that experience, but I bet it's pretty for a sunset cocktail before it turns into a mess.

staying a week at the sanctuary hotel was a blissful experience that i will not soon forget. the hotel had it all: perfect location one block away from times square, free breakfast, free wifi, awesomely friendly and accomodating staff (from doormen to front desk to managers to concierge to housekeeping), great boutique decor, luxurious and rich rooms and bathrooms, swanky bar in the lobby, and rooftop restaurant to come!

we were very happy and satisfied with our stay and the staff made us feel very welcome. so much so that i would definitely return when in NY again. highly recommended!

My bf and I stayed here during our first trip to NY. We were there celebrating our belated anniversary and his good health (previous year was pretty bad for us so we needed this vacation badly).. We booked this hotel because of the good reviews and during our booking, we mentioned the reason for our visit. We arrived to NY during the COLDEST time and I know this sounds corny, but our experience with Sanctuary warmed our heart and soul :) It was the BEST EXPERIENCE we've ever had. We were welcomed by a free room upgrade, there were balloons, a NY souvenir, chocolate, drinks coupons, and a signed card from the employees -- the staff here really went above and beyond our expectations. All the little things mattered. They knew our names, they made sure we had plans for the day, gave us so many tips on where to go and what to try, they just really CARED about our trip and they wanted to make sure we had the best possible visit.. and we did. Besides from their customer service being top notch, the hotel is clean, very nice rooms, private, and like everyone else said SEXY! It really is the PERFECT spot for couples. Not the mention, location location, location! This hotel is in the heart of Manhattan and we were a few steps from the subway and close to everything we wanted to do and see.

I LOVE this hotel and we're planning to come back here the next time we visit NY. THANK YOU SANCTUARY FOR MAKING OUR FIRST NY EXPERIENCE SO MEMORABLE :)

My partner and I stayed here this week for our wedding based upon the service reviews, location & photo gallery. I travel frequently for work and at least once annually internationally for leisure. The Sanctuary has the best service I have ever experienced. It is a perfect hotel for couples & special occasions. They continually greeted us referring to our nuptials, offered assistance with cabs, handled gifts/flowers sent to our room, etc. The rooftop bar has great drinks and a fun, cozy atmosphere with a DJ spinning in the evenings we were there and Shot Skis! The rooms are small - yes (though not necessarily for Manhattan)  - but the space is beautifully utilized and nicely designed. The fireplace in the lobby was a much appreciated added touch - especially with freezing temps outside. Super close to broadway shows, Time Square. Awesome experience & happy to recommend.

Awesome after work spot in midtown for drinks on a rooftop.  The space isn't really big so not the best for large crowds but it turns into a dance party around 8.  There's also a DJ who plays an awesome variety of beats to dance to - top 40, throwbacks, edm etc.   There's surprisingly not a lot of tourists that come here - it's mostly corporate types in their mid to late 20s+.  Best to call ahead sometimes as they do hold a lot of private events up there.

The Sanctuary New York, one of the 4 stars sexy hotel located in heart of Times Square

Today I stopped here for site inspection due to my work, dinner and drink at the Haven restaurant rooftop bar/lounge

I saw some of the reviews on here, wrote this is a chain hotel, which is not true, this is a privately own hotel

The hotel is small, only total of 111 rooms, and is good for singles and couples, because most of their rooms only have either King or Queen

For single good for travelers, because their room really have plenty of space, if you are in the business, you will understand the standard room space in Manhattan usually between 175 sq ft to 300 sq ft, is not very big at all, however the Sanctuary Hotel Superior Queen which is the smallest room in this hotel, I estimate is good 225 sq ft, all stand up shower only, no tub, all the shower is a peek a boo, meaning they are all glass, that's why I wrote is good for single and couples and is one sexy hotel. lol

The hotel do have 1 Suite, but they call it "Sweet", nice huh? lol
Is very nice, it is good approx 500 sq ft, pull out sofa bed in the living room.

Best of the hotel probably is the "Haven" the rooftop bar/restaurant, is really nice up there.
I been in many rooftop bar/restaurant, but this here is really different, the way they decorated

Oh, you know what else? Probably the best of the best. lol
Their food, is great food, and is cheap!! All under $20.
I cannot wait to go back

If you are a traveler from out of the state or country, you should check it out, and if you are a New Yorker, take your special someone and spend the weekend here, is worth it.

This hotel owns the guest experience. To them it doesn't matter how long you will be with them they will work to make your stay the best you have ever experienced. From the moment that you arrive till you depart they will cater to your every whim.

The rooms are posh and swanky. Everything is spotless and the showers have the best pressure in the city. This place is worth every dollar and will be the only place I stay at when I'm in town.

Really loved our stay!  We got a deal on kayak and came here to celebrate our anniversary and see a show and it was lovely.  The service on the roof bar was friendly even though we were shorts and tanks tops (and there was a storm while we were up there!  Wild!), the drinks were tasty, the front desk staff and concierge were helpful, and the room was sweetly decorated in the "sanctuary" theme.  And oh my God--the shower.  Perfect place for a romantic staycation (and the international travelers enjoyed themselves as well, which we learned over the tasty and adequate HOT morning breakfast included in the stay).  Highly recommended!

For the 3rd year in a row my wife took me here for my birthday and every year a card signed by the staff accompanied by some small chocolate snack is waiting on my pillow.  An incredibly thoughtful and nice touch.  The service from the front door to the people cleaning the rooms is top notch and can't be beat anywhere.  Friendly and helpful aren't words that normally come to mind when dealing with people in the city but The Sanctuary has nailed both of those.  Last year I lost my wallet and after I had accepted that it was gone they called and said the would Fed Ex it to me. The rooms are very clean and modern but are a bit on the smaller side which I'm totally ok with.  It's the city, if you're spending that much time in your room worrying about its size most likely you won't be happy with anything.  I'm definitely not a rooftop bar kind of guy but if you're a guest you should definitely check out Haven.  I've only been in the winter and haven't experienced the open air but the times I've been they've had a cool theme going (ski lodge and Moroccan).  The continental breakfast is pretty standard as far as what's being served but the food is way more fresh than your normal continental breakfast you'd find at a chain.  Overall this place gives you serious bang for your buck.  Thank you Sanctuary for another awesome birthday!

I'm going to echo Ed's review on the service exemplified by this hotel's staff. I am so lucky to have experienced this world-class service delivered by every single type of employee here --- the management deserves so much credit for training them so well!

The hotel is located half a block from Time Square and about 2-3 blocks from Halal Guys (great food). It felt safe at all times at night, close to subway lines. The hotel itself is cute and small but looks upscale and nice from the moment you walk in.

This might seem small, but one of my interactions here really impressed me. I did not have a toothbrush on me and when I asked for one at the front desk while checking in, they tried to find one for me in their drawer but I was told, they were out. However "they would take care of it" and they sent their employee to a local store to buy me one and brought it to my room!! How crazy is that!!! Most hotels would say, I apologize but we're out.

Second blissful interaction with concierge staff: Great recommendations, very cool person to talk to, he gave a great and knowledgeable run down on places to go and remembered my name later that evening when I returned asking me how things went. It felt very special and nice.

Also the hotel rooms seemed really quiet and well isolated from the city noise. The rooms are typical small like Manhattan.

Two things I think this hotel could really improve on to make it a perfect 5, is to have clean Bathroom curtains.. Both my rooms, the curtains were very visibly stained and I think it detracted from what would otherwise be a beautiful room. Second, the air conditioner kind of drones (especially easier to hear during the dead of the night when there's no other noise). Additionally it blows a strong current right on top of your body and face and the last few nights here we just threw our hands up in the air and had to turn off the AC system at night due to those reasons. Luckily it was in the high 60s at night when we were there so that was not too much of an issue.
I would try to book on Sanctuary's website if you choose to book here. We went through Orbitz and at the time of booking this hotel (4 weeks prior to our visit) the rate for this place was around $300-400 a night. When we rechecked the rates the day before arrival, the rates had dropped about $75 - 130 per night. We would have gotten refunded credit if booked through and mentioned to Sanctuary.

Bottom line: I think I would stay here again. Best service received at a hotel ever.

My favorite boutique hotel in NY! All things considered and provided that all rooms in NY are small, this is the one hotel that suits my taste (modern/contemporary, clean, cozy yet chic and very charming) as well as my corporate budget! The staff is always terrific and friendly, and the rooftop bar is a great place to relax and grab a bite (the food is very good)...I'm excited to try Tender, the new restaurant they just opened! The Tender lounge is gorgeous - a must see!! I've tried staying at other hotels such as The Dream Midtown and Downtown, and nothing really compares. Love this place :)

We love this hotel for several reasons, not the least of which is the location near Times Square but also the exceptional staff (with a special nod to the concierges) and the modern decor.

The lounge/bar on the roof is nice and serves good food and drinks, albeit at high prices.  The quality of the ingredients is uncompromising though and that staff is very friendly, so we don't really have much complaint about the pricing.

A tip on the room: spend the extra money to upgrade to the king bed, as the room is quite a bit larger and the cost isn't much higher.  Also, try to get a room at the back of the hotel as the front can get noisy from traffic, especially on weekend evenings.

We've been back twice now and I doubt we'll ever stay at another Times Square hotel as long as Sanctuary is here.

I've paid twice as much for room in other hotels in NYC and felt like just a nameless nobody. Everyone at this hotel was amazing. The staff at Sanctuary knew my name, recognized me every time I came and went, and were genuinely friendly people. I never once felt like they were just doing this for a paycheck- everyone from the awesome doormen to the staff at the front desk were wonderful people. I can't explain what it is like to come back to a swank hotel where you actually feel welcomed. They took what was already a nice experience and made it the best stay ever.

The extras you get are worth staying here alone. The free breakfasts and wifi are definitely something to consider when trying to get most out of your trip without breaking the bank. I also loved how they'd decorated with real pumpkins everywhere for Halloween.

Another thing I appreciated was the security of the place. The doormen are not just there to open the door for you- they screened every guest and pizza deliveryman who came in to the hotel and would call me to make sure they were allowed up. As I was a woman travelling by myself for part of the trip, it was something I really liked.

The inside of the lobby is small, but dark and serene. It really is as advertised- you walk in just off of times square and you can't hear the street noise at all.

The room- to which I was upgraded to a king- wasn't the largest room I've ever stayed in in NYC, but it was appointed well. I loved the chandelier over the bed and the shower was the best shower I've ever used in a hotel. The bed was wonderful and comfy. Everything was clean. There was no view in my room, but there were two windows that opened, and I heard no street noise- or any other noise at all except for the air conditioning switching on and off.

This is now my go-to hotel anytime I go back to NYC. I can't imagine staying anywhere else.

Free wifi & breakfast life is good,  Fedex center across the street and an ok deli, walking distance to Time Square and Theater District.  I thought the roof top bar was fun, Great happy hour specials.  The shower was fab....Love me some dual shower heads.   Elevators are cramped (you get to know the other guests really well) and so are the rooms "Welcome to NYC"   I don't the parking situation.  OMG last time I was in NYC I brought my big limo extended escalade with my TEXAS plates.  yeeeeeeeee- haw proud to be a TEXAN and roll up with my big fuel-inefficient features.  The NYC parking garages did not likey

As an employee of a major television station located nearby, I had the pleasure of staying at the Sanctuary after working until 2:00am for Election Night coverage. I found that even at 2:00am, the staff were very professional and friendly during my check in. My room was very comfortable and beautifully decorated. I would recommend this hotel to any traveler on vacation in NYC.

Hotel couldn't be more centrally located yet rooms were quiet and clean (very comfortable beds) with great service at front. First night we came back around 2 am after night out and room smelled of marijuana (someone smoking and coming through the vent). We called front desk and they promptly moved us and, without asking, knocked $60 off our bill when we checked out.

Case example for a hotel that wants people to come back. A+. Definitely coming back.

I'm blown away with this hotel. Quite simply, the hotel staff is the best-trained hotel staff I've ever encountered in my travels around the world. Mind you, I don't normally stay in what the hospitality trade calls luxury accommodations, so that might indicate my parameters for this review.

From the moment the doorman opened the door of our Uber car, to the receptionist, the concierge, the guy who brought up our luggage to the waitresses in the rooftop garden, they made us feel like celebrities. After settling in and then venturing out into the wilds of Times Square, the staff already knew us by sight and bid us a good day and then greeted us like very important guests when we returned.

The accommodations are a bit smaller than what most Americans are used to but the rooms pretty much matches what you usually get in Europe. But the beds were comfortable and it was clean and quiet, buffering the bustling crowds and traffic noise outside the hotel. The honor bar was one of the best i've seen.

The restaurants -- Tenders downstairs and Haven on the rooftop -- were top notch. The food is what you'd expect in a 4-5 star restaurant. The free breakfast was a bonus. One note: both restaurants are apparently popular with the locals and happy hour brings in droves of stylish clientele. For a quiet drink, go in the off-hours.

The location is about as good as it gets if you want to be near the theater district. The discount tickets for Broadway shows is a half a block down the street and dozens of theater venues are in walking distance. All kinds of eateries abound in the neighborhood -- from hot dog carts to high-end choices. (I also think the area has more Irish pubs per block than Dublin.)

Any problem with the room size is more than made up with the tremendous service. With only 111 rooms, the hotel must compete with the big-name hotel  chains, and it more than compensates for its size with high-quality and personalized service. Sanctuary's staff has raised the bar high for my expectations of hotel staff and service. Kudos to management who hire and train them.

The hotel certainly lives up to its name. It'll be my sanctuary whenever I'm in the Big Apple.

I haven't stayed in the hotel, but I have been to the roof top. All I want to say is that, if you are going to charge extra, say something. I was expecting to get a drink for $14 (plus of course a tip), but a tip of $2 was included plus an extra charge for paying with a card! Total=$16.52! Disaster!

As I said, say something when you plan to over charge!

So i saw a package for this hotel on groupon for $149 a night for a supreme or superior king room. Okay so after looking at the reviews and pictures i automatically feel in love with this hotel! So i booked a stay for me and my guy for the weekend. We got there at 1am. The hotel is lite up with purple lights and the entrance is so gorgeous!  The bell hop greets us and takes our bags in for us. We go to the front desk. The front desk staff were wonderful. Our check in was quick and there weren't any problems or additional fees with using the groupon. We got our keys and was personally shown to the elevator and we went up stairs. When we got their our bags were already waiting. As a suprise i had contacted the STAR desk and ask them to set the room up so t ht it could be romantic for me and my babii. It was a suprise and they were helpful in so many ways. They contacted me right away and asked wht wine or champagne i wanted waiting for us in the room. They have so many different packages u can choose from. I picked the standard heart shaped flowers with rose petals leading from the door to the bed and the champagne was on ice and the glasses had rose petals around them. So i made my guy open the door first he was so suprised and happy . They offer free complementary breakfast down stairs. But if they dnt have anything u like your surrounded by every restaurant in 42nd street so u can take ur pick! 42nd street is five blocks away from the hotel. We had lunch at the roof top Haven  which was great.  The views could be better but its still very nice if u get a good table.  They also have a restaurant rite dwn stairs called Tender which we didnt get a chance to dine there because we were still so full off of our lunch at Haven lol but we plan on making a reservation to try it out! The rooms are gorgeous.  Yes they are small but they are clean and nice. Its big enough for u to move around and enjoy yourself. It has such a romantic feel in the rooms and the hotel. loved the glass shower and the way the curtain was set up! The hotels decor was wonderful.  We had a great experience from start to finish! Well definitely be returning to this hotel for another wkend get away with my honey. I love this hotel i would suggest it to anyway looking for a nice place to stay while in newyork or jus for a quick stay away from home!!

*ROOFTOP BAR REVIEW*

Took a little elevator upstairs to the rooftop bar, doors opened, and the view, was breathtaking. Amazingly gorgeous, an array of brightly lit buildings at night in NYC, is something that just makes your heart skip a beat.

The drink prices however could make your heart skip a beat in another regard.

I ordered 6 shots of fireball, and ended up paying 100 dollars, and 18% gratuity was included with it. I have never seen gratuity included when ordering straight from a bar. In my opinion fireball shouldn't be more than 5 bucks a shot, but then again it is new york.

The bar is not a full bar, so don't ask for any girly shooters.

The view/ the atmosphere was to die for, loved it, don't think I could spend a whole night here though, but a good place to start the night.

Had a great time at our Corp sponsored event.  A little disappointed that I missed quite a bit but I was told that it was pretty standard.  Beer, wine and Margaritas which is fine with me.  I have to mention that two Margaritas was enough to get me buzzed.  The view wasn't really much to write about but the staff was great and super friendly, almost to the point of flirty.  

Definitely would go back.

Amazing boutique hotel that is in the heart of the theater district. The check in process was seamless and the employees were very professional and friendly . They partner with the icon parking garage which is right across the street!!! Which is perfect. The fee was $40 for 24 hours which is a great deal in this area. The hotel is very trendy and the room has a lot of nice detail. The rooftop bar/lounge/restaurant... Haven ..... Is a huge bonus. I will definitely stay here and recommend this hotel to others

A great hotel. We weren't expecting much but were completely blown away by the Sanctuary.

Jet-lagged after a long flight, the doorman and receptionist went in EMT-mode as soon as we arrived. Our baggage was vanished, coffee and cake found. R.E.L.A.X.

This was the pattern for the rest of our stay. As wonderfully manic as New York was, the Sanctuary was peaceful. The room was small but wonderfully laid out. I was a bit sceptical of having a shower with two feet of the bed but was quickly converted! A really romantic place to stay. The bottle of sparkling wine sent up by the concierge was the capper.

After looking around for a hotel I kept coming back to the sanctuary. So I decided this is it!!! This is where I will be staying. I am so glad I did. We don't come to NY very often so I wanted to stay some where near the attractions. Walking distance from time square, Rockefeller, moma... Etc.....

I am very particular about customer service and this place exceeded my expectations. The staff was amazing, they had a bday card signed by the staff and chocolate waiting for me in the room!... Very thoughtful gesture!... Everyone was very sweet especially Joe he went above and beyond,any questions we had was more than happy to help!...

Not your typical continental breakfast, it was better. The rooms were comfortable my girlfriends and I had no complaints. It's a boutique hotel so you can't expect a huge room. Wonderful rooftop where you can go and have dinner or a drink before you head out on the town.

Lovely atmosphere. Lovely hotel. Lovely people.

Sanctuary Hotel is the epitome of my ideal hotel.  

Where to begin- Upon arriving for check-in we were warmly greeted by the door man as well as two more employees in the hotel.  The check in process took a matter of five minutes before I was shown how to get to the elevators.  The decor inside of this boutique hotel is terrific and it embodies a very romantic and zen like atmosphere.  Once arriving to the room (212) I was very pleased to see that it looked exactly like the pictures online. (not always the case with many hotels) The room had a very nice view of the city and gave off a warm vibe.  The egyptian cotton bed sheets, blanket, and pillows were to die for and made me want to lie in the bed all day.  A lot of the negative reviewers seem to have an issue with the shower being so open and not being behind a door like most hotels, however there is a large curtain that can be pulled shut, separating the shower from the bedroom if this is something that you wanted to do.  Otherwise, there is a fully stocked mini bar with tons of options, a double sink and a fairly spacious bathroom.  What set this hotel apart from any other, however, besides the very unique decor was the extraordinary hospitality of everyone who worked there.  Granted, my stay was only one night, however, i was kindly greeted and asked if I needed assistance with anything by any employee whose path I crossed which is something you really do not see in hotels these days.   Often times, in nicer hotels such as this one, the attitude of many employees is snobbish and condescending.  That was not the case at Sanctuary.  Everyone seemed as if they genuinely wanted to ensure that your stay there exceeded all expectations.  Upon checking out, I was asked if I needed a taxi anywhere or was interested in anything to do in the city.  I went to grab a bite to eat and the hotel held my bags for me while I was gone. Once I came back, I asked for a cab to Penn Station which one of the employees promptly went outside and found one, bringing my bags and placing them inside the cab for me. In addition to everything, breakfast the Sanctuary is included as well as guest passes to the equinox nearby. All in all, I was very pleased with my experience at Sanctuary Hotel and definitely plan on returning.  

--Side note:  At night I went to the rooftop restaurant (Haven) STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.  Unless you are going for drinks, and drinks ONLY, I would not go to Haven.  My girlfriend and I checked out the restaurant after checking in and found it to be a very cozy and enjoyable atmosphere with a limited but decent looking menu.  To say we were disappointed with the food is an understatement.  I will leave a separate review of the food on their Yelp page but if you value what you eat, I do not recommend dining here.

The only reason I did not give the room 5 stars was because the rooms are on the small side. Other than that everything was terrific. The room was clean, towels were fresh, the staff was lovely.

The only thing i do suggest is do not order room service from the hotel. The food isn't that great and a bit over priced. I got better off of seamless for less. Other than that it was great can't wait to come back

One of the best staffs I have ever come across in a hotel.  Customer service is a huge focal point for them, and it was definitely noticed.

As for the hotel itself, it's beautifully decorated.  Great mixture of comfortable chic and modern.  Our first room was a stand room I suppose.  It was great, but after a few days we wanted some sort of window with natural light.  We switched to a bigger room with king bed And 2 windows that faced the street.  I highly recommend making sure you have a room with a window.  

The rooftop was beautiful.  We did not have the free breakfast and/or eat at the hotel restaurant Tender.  Tender looks great though!
