The location is probably the best part of this hotel- it is conveniently located in downtown Charleston and within walking distance of great restaurants and shops! We stayed here using Marriott points (30,000 points for 1 night), not sure I would be as impressed if we paid the regular rate.

The king bed was very comfortable and the room, lobby and hallways were clean. The front desk staff was very friendly, although I was unimpressed with the concierge who was very blasé about giving us a dinner recommendation. In the end we got a good recommendation out of him....  after being told it was the busy season and reservations were nearly impossible.

I have very few criticisms of this place.  It was one of the best hotel experiences I've had in a while.

Our hotel room was exactly as described and was in a quiet location as we requested.  However, you could hear noise from the hallway.  My partner even woke up at 2am because the noise from someone showering next door was too loud.  We would also hear people slamming their doors or kids running down the hallway.

There is no place to hang a hand towel by the sink.  You have to fold it up and lay it on the counter.  I would really prefer a nice, simple hook like I find at most hotels.  The only place to hang a full size towel is on a hook on the back of the door.

The beds are nice, but they turned out to be too soft for me.  By the end of my three day trip my back was a little sore from sleeping on the bed.

The best feature is the heated swimming pool.  No, you won't think you're in Hawaii, but it is warm enough to swim outside even when the weather is 60F and below.  I used that pool twice.

The staff were all consistently professional.  I never got the attitude from anyone that "I can't help you, it's not my department".  The front desk people didn't hesitate to pitch in and get me my car when the valet was busy.  The hotel operator was very helpful in giving advice about where to eat.

I would definitely consider staying here again the next time I am in Charleston.

Stayed here last week for 3 wonderful days in Charleston. This hotel is tucked away downtown. Very convenient. Not over the top fancy, but quite nice.  Starbucks on site. Valet parking. Had a large corner room. No bathrobes. The staff was excellent. Everyone was friendly and knowledgable.  I would look forward to staying here again.

After a bit of a rocky check-in from a not-so-happy employee, I don't really have any complaints. The room was very clean and comfortable. All of the other staff I dealt with was very friendly. If any issues did come up, they were quickly resolved. I don't think the pool was heated when I went as it was pretty chilly. The breakfast buffet was really good. Location was GREAT!

I always choose hotels based on the criteria of clean, comfortable, good location and price.  It doesn't take a lot to please me. this hotel always delivers.  I'm not a big fan of the "southern touches" in the room but hey, do as the locals do. Location and the price I got won me over.

I expect a Renaissance to be a cut above some other hotel chains. We did not find this to be the case. The hotel was well-kept but furnishings and carpetting were old. We had requested a king bed but received two double beds - something that might be due to a travel agent problem.  To compensate, the front desk (very nice) gave us "the nicest view" - a 6th floor room that overlooked a bunch of small buildings...go figure.
The fitness center was limited but there was a gym across the street that worked well for the $10 fee.

I never get excited by hotels.  The ones in my price range are pretty much always the same.  Same boring rooms, same hotel smell, same cheap soap, same crappy coffee maker, same tired staff.  

Renaissance shook me out of that boring old cycle.  Their desk staff were really friendly, quick, and professional.  The room was very nicely appointed  It actually looked like the photo above (we even had one of those crazy tube pillows).  The soap and other various toiletries were top-notch.  I don't even go for that stuff so much, but I thought they all smelled great (in a natural way, not like synthy-sweet mega brand soaps).

Not that we were there to watch tv, but there was a nice big HD LCD in the room.  The view from the third floor was of a jumble of nearby rooftops.  But everything in Charleston is so low I think you could hardly expect a sweeping view.

The fitness center was totally adequate.

The hotel's location was very convenient to everything.  We saw the City on foot, mostly, leaving from the hotel each day.

Parking is located in the garage right across the street.  $13/day, unlimited access.

Nice work, Renaissance.

The staff at this property is great and always willing to work with you. I'd say some of the room decors maybe a little outdated.

You'll need to walk a little bit (not far) to get to the heart of Charleston so the location is great and the service is great...not sure what else I can ask for.

They don't have a fitness center (at least I don't remember one) at this property. I think you have to go across the street to a local fitness center.

Perfect location, clean, great service. The best Valet guy I have ever seen/known/experienced in my life. Every Valet guy should take notes from him. Aveda products?!! love it! The gym is perfect with new equipment, televisions, and balls. Great lounge chairs by the pool, although the pool is atrocious. You can fit maybe 3 people swimming. Ha!
Overall, happy with out stay. All the great little details that you want out of a hotel.

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel.  This hotel was recently renovatated and it shows.  Our room was very clean and beautifully decorated.  The bedding and furnishings were awesome.  Also, the room had a 32" flat screen.  Not that we spent much time watching TV.  wink wink

The hotel is centrally located.  Their employees were very friendly.  I would definately stay here again.

The ONLY place to stay for the annual Charleston 10K Bridge run. Parked the car across the street and never touched it for 3 days & nights. Small fee for parking - fabulous. The staff is incredible: valet, bellmen, front desk, bartender ( Henry is sooo great at cocktails especially concocting a great drink with Firefly sweet tea Vodka). rooms: wonderfully appointed, great bed. The hotel is on the last 1/2 mile of the bridge run: we run by it and then after the race...walked right back to the hotel. What a super experience: Renaissance has hit a home run here. Look forward to returning for another visit.

Not what one expects for $470.00 a night...  even at a $40.00 Super 8, I get free internet!!!  small room, no fridge, no view, no mini-bar, no complementary water, no parking ($17 a day to have it driven across the street), NO comp Wireless internet, no continental breakfast, I returned @ 2pm and my room still was not serviced...00.00 of the amenities a professional traveler expects. Staff were very, very nice but in no way made up for the downfalls... I am NOT coming back to the Renaissance and do not recommend you do either.  Cheers and Safe travels to all.

If I could put 0 stars I would. We've stayed at Renaissance in several countries and states and this is by far the worst. Room size and style is a joke, very outdated and cramped for a hotel of this "quality". We tried calling down for more pillows twice and no one answered or assisted. At most hotels they assist you w your bags but they didn't seem to care (or notice) that my 6 month pregnant wife was lugging her bag around. Don't get me started on the fact that they nickle and dime you for everything. Sometimes when you pay $350+ for a room you expect free wifi and some "extras".....but not here at this Renaissance. You must pay for it all. Pool is the size of a large hot tub with the view of a brick building. Not sure what all these people are saying about location. It's decent but not great. It's still a nice walk to anything you want to see, I was expecting everything much closer based on other reviews and price. I know Charleston is a little pricey, but their are other hotels much more convenient and appreciative of your business. I will never stay here again!

We have stayed at many of the historic district hotels over the years and this place is one of the best.  Great location. Clean, well-equipped rooms.  The staff are great...helpful and courteous.  Give it a try...you wont be disappointed.

Four star. I am not much of a chain hotel diner but the food was top flight. Grits and scallops rank as my best ever. I doubt one can go wrong with anything on the menu. The place has pride in its food and the servers show it well.

This hotel was very nice. The rooms were average size, average decor and clean. The staff was very friendly and even offered a "navigator" service (we didn't use so cant vouch for how helpful it is). The hotel is walking distance from lots of shops and restaurants and there is convenient parking right across the street in a nice, clean garage. Breakfast and wifi was not included in the room rate - which was definitely on the high end. If i I could, I would probably drop the rating .5 stars for those oversights.  Overall, I would probably recommend this hotel to others.

Clean hotel.  Great staff.  Bt the Marriott corporate policy of not offering free wi-fi is a disservice to their higher end properties like this one.  

To pay $450/night and then be told at check-in that Internet is an extra $12 is a joke, and diminishes everything else from that point on.  Wake up Marriott!  It is 2012... not 2003.

Oh...but at least it is free in the lobby!  Woo hoo!  I suppose they won't mind if the wife and I hangout down there in our pajamas at night, so we can use our iPads and answer business emails??

Fruity water, quiet rooms, location,and awesome food best describes the Renaissance. It is the center of action and ambiance no matter the age group. Need I say more? If I ever come back to Charleston this is the chosen establishment I need to frequent. The service unprecedented, The food is awesome too and that includes room service. I regret to inform my desire to run on the treadmill after eating so much was thwarted by some folks not realizing the 30 minute time limit in the hotel gym, Be forewarned! My only real complaint is the 12.95 fee I had to pay to use internet access at the hotel. I believe this should be included in the price as the price per night for a room is quite high.

I was also expecting this hotel to be in line with other Renaissance hotels. The lobby is elegant and nice but the rooms are on the small side and outdated. Staff has been super helpful so far and provided us with early check-in which we greatly appreciated.

Favorite hotel in Charleston... Close to restaurants and sights.  Plus good workout options in the hotel and next door (gym, yoga studio and spinning facility all three competing for your drop in).  I always enjoy their breakfast in the morning (the smoothie shot is a nice touch) and the bar for a after dinner drink is a fun option too.

However, I've had my worst hotel experience at this property.  During my most recent trip I had to request a room change after being awoke at 1:00am by my neighbors.  It was a room connected by interior doors, and I could hear their every word. Not comforting for privacy and relaxation.  I'm in a hotel 100+ nights a year and this was far worse than the standard talking in the hall and somebody letting a door slam when they stumble in at midnight.

We were in Charleston for a bachelorette party and the Renaissance was the perfect hotel for the occasion. The location was great -- within walking distance to King St, Meeting St and E Bay St. We didn't have to get in the car once all weekend! The staff is very accommodating and the rooms were large enough and comfortable. We also had a mini-balcony, so it was great to be able to open the door and get some fresh air. Definitely recommend this hotel for a weekend away in Charleston!

If I could give ten stars, I would do it without hesitation. Once we arrived, we were courteously greeted, and the bellman took all the bags with us to our room. The entire hotel was stylish and the room itself enhanced that feeling. The rooms are very spacious with a nice view. The people were very helpful and the beds are very comfortable. The hotel offers free wifi, some people were just not connecting to the right network. I highly recommend this exceptional hotel and I would gladly stay in this lovely hotel on my next visit to Charleston.

This review is for the spa..... I scheduled a spa (basic) manicure and pedicure. First, Van who did my nails was very good and friendly, you can tell she wants her clients happy.

The spa itself is not great I was in small room to get my nails done and it was hot!! The manicure chair and even pedicure chair is uncomfortable. The spa mani/pedi is not worth $94.00 as there are no extra services with it and chairs are so uncomfortable making it hard to relax. Just not worth money based on solely on environment....

My wife and I were expecting this to be similar to the Renaissance in Providence (modern take on a historical property) given their 4 year streak of 4 Diamond awards, photos and other reviews. Instead I would characterize it to be a well renovated Marriott with great bathroom products (Aveda) and a well designed lobby area. Baffling that it's Cat7. Cat 5 is more appropriate. Wireless internet didn't really work - used Wifi card instead.

Great for a business stay but I would stay elsewhere for pleasure.

Went there for a girl's weekend and loved it. Will come back if I can get a balcony next time.

All of the staff were absolutely wonderful. I only have one complaint about that which I will get to. The bartender was amazing. Turn down service with chocolates was awesome, and the food was good for the most part. The patio area to sit in near the bar that was so cute and really nice to sit in after/while drinking. The carpet in the halls was very "loud" but overall not bad. The room was nice and clean and was good for the price. Location was awesome, especially when trying to get back to the hotel after having one too many at Wet Willie's.

The biggest reason they are not getting 5 stars was the Coffee and Internet/dealing with the staff over the internet. I got a deal that included free internet, normally 13 bucks for a day. I asked twice at the front the desk for the pass code and was told that it wouldn't show up on the bill, just click OK to accept the charge. Of course at the end it was on the bill and we had to take it off, which they did without hesitation. I just feel like there should have been more pro-activeness regarding the situation.

Also the coffee is TERRIBLE. All the coffee, the coffee in the room, the coffee at their breakfast all the coffee. They said it was Starbucks- they lied. It was also the only coffee I've ever had that got worse as you put cream and sugar in it. I drink a lot of coffee in my life, and by that I mean folders. I have had some Starbucks occasionally and even some gourmet coffee in my life so I do know what that is supposed to taste like. I'm also used to most coffee at restaurants have a "burned" taste to it. But normally if the coffee black isn't good if you add cream and sugar it becomes tolerable. This coffee got worse. To me it didn't ruin my experience or anything, but I felt like it should be mentioned especially if you survive on at least one cup of coffee a day. Fortunately there is also a Starbucks a couple of blocks down.

Really like this hotel. Clean, large rooms. Great staff from the doorman, front desk and bartender. Had margaritas in the bar served in a mason jar, a great glass of wine and finished the night with two awesome desserts. Bartender was engaging and friendly. Easy check out good location.

When I arrived it was pretty early (10am or so) and my room wasn't ready yet. I sat in the lobby and answered some emails for about half an hour and they called me to get my room. The lobby staff were very friendly and courteous. One lady even remembered me and would greet me by name every time she saw me.

The lobby area has a very grand feeling but isn't terribly comfortable. My room was very spacious, clean and comfortable.

As a Marriott rewards member, I did get vouchers for a free breakfast at the cafe in the hotel. This was also excellent and the staff there were very friendly and attentive.

This is my "go to" hotel when staying in Charleston.  

The location is terrific for the walking vacation that I always enjoy while in the historic distric.  The conceirge staff is incredibly helpful and full of brilliant suggestions.

It is worth the few extra dollars to stay in such a top-notch accomodation.

Very good located, just in walking distance of many of Charlestons's attractions. Good breakfast for the States with fresh fruits but staff could have been more attentive - we asked three times for coffee.
We arrived after one of the regular daily thunder storms/rains and found the room wet around windows - no wonder given that one can look outside just UNDER the door to the balcony, it does not close. In addition, the door to the balcony is rotting away. Ouch. Also when we got back after a day out we found our room not serviced.
The street where it is located also is currently experiencing quite some construction work.
All in all not worth the money they charge at the moment until they invest some of it.

Their breakfast is really good, especially the bacon and sausage.  The front desk is super friendly.  And the hotel is really pretty.  I enjoyed my stay here. Its centrally located.  You can walk to a lot of attractions and don't even need the car.  We walked to Poogan's Porch for dinner and it was a pleasant surprise.  If you do need a car to go to further away attractions, valet is super fast and they're really nice too.  Definitely happy we saw Boone Hall Plantation.  Thats a must.  And we enjoyed our she crab bisque, thats also something to do.  This was a super fun stay.

My husband and I stayed at the Renaissance from Thursday-Sunday of Halloween weekend. Upon arrival the staff were all very nice and they had a cute Halloween candy display for guests to enjoy.

They did not have the room that we requested (are hotels becoming more like rental car companies in that you reserve something specific only to show up and have it be unavailable?), so we had to sleep in what appeared to be a room meant for bridal parties getting ready, which only had a full-size Murphy bed that folded out of the wall. Odd. The staff were very accommodating though and moved our luggage the next day to a room with our requested King bed. They even left us a cheese plate and a bottle of wine for our troubles.

My husband paid a little bit extra for two free drink tickets (he thought it was two per day but it was two tickets in total) and breakfast each morning. If you see this package, I would skip it. The breakfast was your typical boring hotel breakfast, and your money is better spent on breakfast and drinks at a local Charleston establishment. The bar was a happening place though and convenient if you want one drink before dinner. The location was nice as well, as you were pretty much in the middle of the city and could walk to Upper King or the water in about the same time. We would definitely stay here again but would cut out the frills like the drink tickets and breakfast.

Great location and wonderful service! The staff was friendly and very helpful. The restaurant was closed during our stay, but the hotel compensated by offering a complimentary breakfast and cocktail hour! The gym was really impressive. Our room was spacious and had all of the necessary amenities. We were so central to everything downtown and walked everywhere. We will definitely stay here again.
