History

Established in 2005.

This Stately mansion was built by August and Mary (Schott) Westphal in 1913, on a triangular lot overlooking historic downtown Hartford.  The English Tudor style home made of a Frank Lloyd Wright style brick and stucco.  The interior is finished with red oak and birch woodwork, plaster-carved moldings, and a grand staircase in the foyer.

In September 2005, Pam & Garret Terpstra purchased the building and began renovations. Garret acted as the general contractor and Pam as the project designer and organized a team of highly qualified craftsmen to complete the project in a timely manner opening their doors late 2006.

Pam and Garrets passion to preserve the original character, architecture and rich history can be felt through out the mansion.  An old world ambiance and grandeur were preserved as well.  Special attention to detail, comfort and luxurious amenities are what their guests can experience while staying at the inn.

We went here on a Groupon last fall and I can't believe I've waited this long to write a review for them. They are fantastic! My boyfriend was concerned it would be the giant-teddy-bear-and-doll-collection stereotype that B & B's have and was pleasantly surprised to find it cheesiness-free. The owners are very knowledgeable about the history of the building and the town. We found a great Mexican restaurant for breakfast in walking distance of the inn. In the evening we went to the Mineshaft in search of live music and stumbled upon an awesome arcade. We played about 50 games of skeeball and then made our way to this great 1950's style ice cream shop. Then we went back to the inn and watched a movie in our room from their collection. The next morning they made us a great home-made breakfast.

I love living in Chicago, but Hartford was a really great small town escape from the city. It was really a fun stay and something we won't soon forget. We're' planning on coming back soon and maybe bringing some friends for a couples weekend.

One of the things in life that makes me happy is when you see someone doing what they love and doing it really, really well, and that is what you find at the Westphal.  Pam and Garret are friendly, warm and inviting.  The facility is newly renovated with super comfy beds and great antique decor -  i.e. NOT creepy dolls and teddy bears everywhere.  They know so much about the history of their property and the surrounding area and conversing with was a breeze.

And the breakfast is FANTASTIC.  Not only do they serve you a three course breakfast, but they put out wine and cheese for "Happy Hour" and always have fresh baked cookies waiting for us when we came in from our night out.  If you are visiting the Kettle Morraine area, you'd be missing out if you didn't stay there.

Stayed here recently for business.  It was a nice change of pace from the hotel chains I am used to.  Clean, comfortable and charming.  All rooms have their own bathroom and give you a more homey feel.

This room was booked for me by a business associate so I was skeptical, having never stayed at a B and B.   The owners were very nice!  They know when to hang out and chat, and when to give you your space.  Great place

Stayed here very recently for a weekend getaway.  Couldn't possibly give this place less than 5 stars, as the owners went well out of their way to ensure that every aspect of our stay was perfect.

Pam and Garrett (owners/managers/makers of delicious breakfast) were very accommodating, warm, and friendly people.  They were approachable and always willing to help guests identify restaurants and attractions in the area. They even had little freshly baked macaroons sitting out for the guests at night.

The best part about staying at Westphal Mansion was the fact that they didn't charge an additional fee for breakfast. Not only do they include breakfast with your stay, but they make the absolute best breakfast humanly possible.  Our breakfast consisted of a blueberry scone, fresh melon, quiche, asparagus, chocolate habanero cake (this was particularly awesome), and coffee.

Each suite is cleverly named and themed after a famous author. The antique furniture is all very stunning, and the place is impeccably well-maintained.

Really can't make enough positive statements about this place.  Highly recommend!

The mansion is very beautiful and the decorations were well done. Most of the rooms were really wonderful. We stayed over Valentines weekend, so there was a full house. This meant unfortunately, that we could not get the room we wanted. We ended up staying in the Louisa May Alcott Suite, which compared to the other rooms, was very bland and small. There was no whirlpool and the room was consistently about 20 degrees too hot. The bed was also pretty hard and uncomfortable, which for a B&B is really a disappointment. The TVs in all of the rooms were very small and hard to see from the beds, they could be updated to a bigger size for a small price in this day and age. The innkeepers were talkative and welcoming. The breakfast was absolutely amazing! So delicious and very filling! My favorite was the lavender scone with lemon curd custard! Yum. The wine and cheese at 4pm was a really nice touch as well. We highly recommend this B&B and will be going back!
