Terrific hotel for such a small city. Got an "ultimate" room and it is amazing. Highly recommend. Didn't do 5 stars because of a lack of over the top details such as bell hop, but I don't want/need that kind of attention.

I meant to write this review years ago but kept putting it off, so here goes!

I stayed here for a few days while visiting my boyfriends family. I have to admit that I really wasn't expecting much considering how small Wausau is compared to NYC, I ended up being pleasently surprised!

The hotel was conveniently located in downtown Wausau, close enough to walk to businesses and restaurants which I found quite handy! The front desk staff was extremely friendly and helpful! They recommended eating at the "Chang Garden" across the street. which ended up being my favorite dining experience of the whole trip! If you happen to stay here you MUST go across the street and eat there, you won't regret it! They do have a rather nice restaurant in the hotel but I ended up not eating there, the menu wasn't really appealing to me. The bar on the other hand looked very nice. It looked like a good place to have a couple of drinks and wind down for the night if your looking for that.

I also LOVED how clean and tidy the rooms were. They were also VERY spacious and well decorated. They seemed enormous when you consider how small the hotel rooms typically are in NYC. The hotel even had an indoor pool that was very nice and quiet, there was no one else using it at the time..

All in all, 2 big thumbs up! I would most definitely stay here again!!!

This is an excellent new hotel in Wausau. We went for a wedding---but can imagine returning when we next visit the area. The rooms are clean and quite large. Our location was close to everything in town and the price was reasonable. The hotel did a near perfect job with the wedding (the beef was less perfect than everything else)---which is expected given its high ratings on theknot.com and other wedding sites.

We stayed at Jefferson Street Inn for 3 nights on a ski weekend to Granite Peak.  I am a sales rep from Chicago so I've seen my fair share of hotels, and Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau definitely holds it's own!

My #1 positive: it is DOG FRIENDLY!  For $30/night we were able to bring our lab along for the trip.  The entire staff is extremely dog friendly (treats at the check-in desk, etc.) and they all make your furry friend feel very welcomed.

    Other positives include:
    - A fairly nice modern lobby
    - Nice clean spacious rooms, kitchenettes, granite counter tops
    - Large whirlpool tub with jets

    Some cons:
    - Super small stand-up shower
    - Linens are a little stiff and starchy
    - Cheesy fake "fireplace" that turns on with a light switch, but isn't actually fire

Overall, it was a great experience for the price and we will definitely stay there again (with our dog) next time we are in Wausau.

This is a great hotel to stay at in Wausau. It's located right in the heart of downtown Wausau. So, you have a lot of options when you stay here. You can walk to the mall, or any of the restaurants/bars downtown. They also have a nice restaurant in the hotel called City Grill. I came across this gem when I noticed that I could get a room there for the same price I was paying at a nearby Hampton Hotel. Give this place a try!

Stayed here many times, it's the best place in Wausau right downtown off the square within walking distance to great places to hang out and good dinner hot spots.. Highly recommend if your ever in the Wausau area...

Very nice location and super friendly staff!  We have stayed here several times now with our golden retriever with us, and they are always welcoming and attentive.  The rooms are spacious and clean, the shower head isn't at my chin, and the location is good for proximity to the highway and walking distance to food.  The room we had faced east the second time we were here, which was rather noisy, but still okay.  Overall, definitely recommended....

So, you're traveling on business and looking for a hotel in Wausau?

    Here's my take on it:
Option #1 - You are a rookie traveler, afraid of your boss' comments on your travel expense report, so, like a coward, you spend a little less on a place outside of the downtown area. You will be bored and lonely, isolated in typical mid-west strip mall haven. You will have to drive to anything interesting. But be honest, you're not going to drive anywhere after checking in. Nothing nearby catches your eye, so you are going to take off your shoes and your belt, and watch reruns of King Of the Hill.

Option #2 - You are older, wiser, and have traveled enough to know that an extra $10 or $20 on your expense report is well worth the well being you will get from a pleasant evening walking around, getting to know an interesting town, making casual conversation with the locals, and being close to good watering holes so you can walk back to your hotel without the concern of a DUI or taxi fares (which will make up for the difference between your hotel and the one you should have picked in the first place).

You can only have option #2 in Wausau if you stay here. It is in the heart of anything worth doing on an average evening in Wausau. You are in the heart of downtown, where you can walk everywhere. Whether you want shops, restaurants, bars, book stores, coffee and pastries; whether you want a good breakfast joint or a decent place for dinner, whether it's chinese, pizza, ice cream, or traditional fare - it is all available to you if you make the right choice and stay at Jefferson Street Inn. There are enough interesting things to do that you will actually want to leave your room after checking in. .

Above all of that - it's the nicest, cleanest, highest quality, and most tastefully appointed hotel I've experienced in Wausau.

This is definitely one of my favorites to stay in. I travel around a lot and stay in the hotels all the time and this is probably one of the best that I have seen! It is probably because of this hotel that I look forward to coming to Wausau for my work.

It's located in downtown Wausau and has a unique environment of its own. It is connected to a small shopping center so you don't even have to leave the hotel to look around. There is also a mall right across the street from it which adds another bonus. Citi grill bistro is another good thing about this hotel as it has really nice food although it is kind of pricey.

You would always find the staff to be really friendly, the rooms are extremely clean, and if you choose a room with a Jacuzzi in it.... It would make your stay worth the price.

Advice: make sure to reserve a room ahead of time as this hotel sells out very quickly!

If you are in Wausau this is the only place to stay in my opinion, and I have stayed at pretty much every decent hotel in town.  The building is tied in with Washington Square and the cool shops on Third Street.  You may see some complaints about the property being confusing but I feel that gives Jefferson Street Inn a unique urban feel.  It is true about the elevator however.  They expanded the hotel after it was originally built and didn't add a second elevator so it is slow during check out time.  Good food also.

This place is so beautiful, there's probably a wedding every weekend. Don't worry about exercise, there's a lot of hall walking. Especially to the upper floors. Security is very tight. There is a second elevator that you have to use a key for it to even move. Rooms are so comfortable. I like the bathroom set up. The sink area is solitary. And what an area. Nice Aveda products. The shower was nothing notable, it reminded me of a camp ground style. Most impressive was the size of the refrigerator. For booking on short notice the price was still reasonable. I can't wait to go back.

As a consultant, I travel pretty much the entire year and have become a hotel "snob" according to my friends.  I'm always weary of staying at a place that's not associated with the big hotel chains.  This one was no exception.  I have to say however that I was very impressed with the Jefferson St. Inn.  JSI will continue to be my hotel of choice when in the Wausau area.

    Pros
    1) Suites are very luxurious, spacious, and economical
    2) Continental breakfast has a broader selection than most.
    3) Convenient location - close to shopping mall, pubs, and several restaurants

    Cons:
    1) One elevator accessible from hotel lobby -- Thought it has another elevator on one end, its not practical since the first floor of it leads to a shopping mall outside the hotel. By far, the biggest gripe.
    2) Loud air conditioner -- the suite we stayed was had a wall unit conditioner reminiscent of motels, so these tend to be louder than average.
    3) Small pool - Probably fits one family with a couple of kids... Should you get in, you'll be treading US personal space rules

Lovely hotel downtown Wausau. We stayed here for a few days over the Christmas holiday and went skiing at Granite Mountain (20 min drive). My husband and i stayed in one of the Ultimate suites, which had a hot tub big enough for two, duel "fireplaces" (gas fireplaces with some sort of faux fire image that flickers behind) in bedroom and living room and a full kitchen. It was the perfect spot for a romantic weekend getaway!  The free hotel breakfast and hotel restaurant were decent, although not exceptional. However, there were some great restaurants and activities within walking distance of the hotel, including Red Eye Brewing Co. and an adorable DIY craft studio called Clay Corner, where we painted Christmas ornaments. There is also a small shopping mall right down the street.

We really just happend into staying here due to the property being pet friendly. This was a really nice property, seemingly newly-built or remodeled. My sole complaint was that the back of the bathroom door was quite dirty from hands opening and closing the door.
The decor was great, the room was quiet, the location was right within walking distance to restaurants, a few shops and bars, plus there was a restaurant on site.
The front desk staff was very friendly, and even though we booked through credit card reward points and did not have an option to note that we were bringing a dog, we found a gift bag in the room with a surprise treat for the dog.
We had never spent time in Wausau, but after this enjoyable stay and some great restaurants in the area, I would consider coming back for a short getaway.

This was my second stay here and it was only by chance the first time that I ended up here. It certainly wasn't by chance this time around. This is a gem of a downtown hotel in a really great little eclectic downtown.

The staff is outstanding and the rooms are great. They are tastefully appointed and surprisingly spacious. Our luxury suite was 2 rooms with 2 fireplaces, a separate sitting area, whirlpool.....  Just nice.

And let's face it, it's downtown wausau. It should be different. I'm sure the Best Western has got an extra room if you want average.

I stayed in one of the suites with fireplaces and jacuzzi tub (see pictures). My room had a very luxurious feel overall. The mini bar area was well stocked. The front desk staff were very pleasant and happy to assist me with my inquires.

There were a few areas for improvement, though. For example the air conditioner/heating unit in the bedroom raddled all night. Normally things like this do not bother me at all. I'm a very deep sleeper, but this was loud. I eventually couldn't take it any longer and turned the thing off.

Also, when I filled the jacuzzi the water was green. I thought maybe it hadn't been used in a while, so I drained it and filled it again. But the water was still green the second time too. I'm not sure if this is just the color of the city water or what.

    A few other gripes:

The light in the shower was poorly positioned. So when you close the curtain it's dark in the shower stall.

The gym and pool are not easy to get to. You even have to switch over to a separate elevator bank.

There is very little on-site parking. Otherwise you have to park in a garage across the street. The $8/night charge will be added to your bill wether you like it or not.

They get 5 stars for just the staff ! Then 5 stars for a super comfortable bed . Room is nice and comfy and I love the colors throughout the hotel .
I was surprised at how beautiful the area is around it . Nice walk to grab a bite ( avoid jalapeños at all cost !)
There is a cupcake shop across the street that you must stay away from if you have a sweet tooth ! The ladies at the front desk told me to go there and they were spot on .
As a matter of fact they were spot on with everything , very nice and helpful .
